Abstract:The received history of the disabled body is deeply problematized by a genealogy – inspired initially by Foucault – that disrupts the notion of a continuous development of ideas and images, and shifts the focus to competing, fractured and discontinuous discourses culturally embedded in particular historical periods. Following Foucault's explication of the emergence of modernist normativities and the operation of power/knowledge, disability scholarship has charted a break between early religiously-inspired models concerned with a god-given nature, a medical model that pathologizes the disabled body and, more recently, the social model of disability that effects a politicization of the problematic. Yet consistent with a Foucauldian analytic, even the latter resistant discourse gives rise to its own normativities and generates new resistances. Alongside the return of the disabled body to challenge the hegemony of socio-cultural determinations, I offer, then, a further complication. Where previous approaches speak to external discursive power – albeit embedded in the individual consciousness – as the motor of change, I seek to supplement and reconfigure the problematic by engaging with the operation of psychic elements. Within the historically contextualized transformations in the meaning of disability, there is, I argue, another current of interior and less accessible responses, which not only challenge the privileging of periodization in historical thought, but also disorder the alternative Foucauldian approach. Where his analysis is concerned with the multifarious mobilizations of the binary of self and other, a more specifically deconstructive approach seeks to uncover the other as an interior attribute of the embodied self. This essay plays over some historical moments and brings them together with postmodernist and psychoanalytic theory to show how binary differences are constantly undone by the irreducible différance of the disabled body.

Abstract:In this commentary, I discuss the contribution of the target article (Sulaeman et al. 2020) and suggest further study in terms of research on psychosocial issues of people with physical disabilities. The authors of the target article qualitatively analyzed the disability-related experiences of people with oligodactyly in a rural village in Indonesia, employing the theories of stigma (Goffman 1963) and illness narrative (Kleinmann 1988). First, the authors effectively found the meanings of the participants' minor daily experiences by focusing on their physical organ abnormalities. Oligodactyly is visible and mild, rather than other disabilities such as spinal cord injury. A detailed analysis is required to clarify the effect of disability. The authors found that their bodily differences and disorders had multifaceted meanings rather than negative ones only. Another finding was that "God" was referred to as a mediator connecting diverse meanings and places revealing uncertain experiences. Additionally, I discuss that the visibility of oligodactyly depends on the context, and that visible or invisible dichotomy is not suitable for studying psychosocial issues. I argue that people with mild disabilities face the dilemma of disclosing their condition to others. My suggestion for further study is to examine the development of disability meaning from a long-term perspective to elucidate the meaning's evolution through the participant's interaction with family, community, and area outside that village. The concept of narratives in cultural psychology, such as Bruner (2002)'s narrative mode of thinking, was useful; narrative was interfering with the future, past, and present (Valsiner 2007).

Abstract:PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: The acquisition of a disability impacts one's corporeality and has been found to destabilize one's sense of personal and social identity. The article explores the psychological and behavioral adaptation strategies that are employed in response to resisting, incorporating, and/or integrating disability into one's identity. We refer to a study that considered factors that facilitate and/or impede disability identification, aiming to investigate the trajectory that the process of identity (re)construction takes.RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN: Seven individual, in person, semistructured interviews were conducted with adults with acquired physical and sensory disabilities. Data underwent thematic analysis. To encapsulate the intrapersonal as well as interpersonal dynamics inherent in identity (re)construction, the analysis was guided by an interpretative phenomenological lens and social identity theory (SIT).RESULTS: Disability identification is a complex and contradictory phenomenon, with strategies of resistance, incorporation, and/or integration fluctuating by setting and circumstance. These findings represent a significant departure from SIT literature-participants rather made use of more collectivist as opposed to individualistic adaptation strategies. Arguably, progress is being made with regard to disability pride, opening up a space for more positive and affirming disabled identities. Furthermore, disability identification is largely facilitated by greater opportunities for political advocacy and social support-online and in the disabled community. However, stigma-internalized and external-is still a major inhibitory factor to disability identification.CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS: Recommendations for rehabilitation programs and psychological professionals working with acquired physical and sensory disability are proposed. Abstract:The World Health Organization reports that patients with disabilities are more likely to experience worse general health conditions than other patients—on the one hand, because of the possible comorbidities associated with disability, and on the other, for the numerous barriers to accessing primary and specialist care. Patients with disabilities are more than twice as likely to report finding health care providers' skills inadequate to meet their needs, four times more likely to report being treated badly, and nearly three times more likely to report being denied care ( Hughes, 2000 ). When considering patients with disabilities, the implementation of patient-centered care (PCC) is particularly crucial, especially when examining its relational components; the emotional and physical comfort it implies; and the focus on patients' needs, values, and preferences ( Kuipers et al., 2021 ; Lotan & Ells, 2010 ).

Abstract:The popularity of the Paralympics co-exists with persistent exclusion of disabled youth and adults in community sport and recreation programmes around the world. This study explored the experiences of disabled people in sport, fitness and dance, drawing upon a range of participants’ perspectives from Paralympic athletes and professional dancers, to those who’d never engaged in physical activities. We asked participants about the range of psycho-social factors that intervene between a disabled person and a workable, enjoyable fitness regimen. Insights emerged into factors that encourage enjoyable physical movement for some, and factors that discourage or prohibit this for others. Analytic tools of Critical Disability Theory were applied to penetrate stereotyped conceptualizations of disabled people, taking a long view into the history of disability discrimination and exclusion. An example is the concept and (English) word, ‘fitness’ used during the Eugenics Movement to dismiss the worth of disabled people. Along with other marginalized populations, the ‘unfit’ were systematically targeted with elimination. We addressed these archaic attitudes, in concert with the present era’s intrusions of architectural, programmatic and attitudinal barriers, which may become internalized as resistance to physical activities. Participants offered strategies to support others in the world of movement, along with encouragement to Disability Studies scholars to expand research in this arena.

Abstract:Background. One in 5 people in the United States live with disability; however, the public health needs of this community have been largely overlooked. Although U.S. law mandates the availability of accessible medical exam equipment, people with mobility disabilities (PWMD) frequently encounter barriers that require self-advocacy to receive basic primary care. Objective. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively explore the impact of healthcare access barriers—specifically, the experiences of the need to self-advocate and factors that inform decisions to make accommodation requests—for PWMD. Methods. Qualitative semistructured interviews were performed across two phases of data collection with each of the 6 participants. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to highlight the essence of participants’ experiences in making decisions to request healthcare accommodation. Results. Participants included a purposive sample of self-advocates with physical disabilities (3 men and 3 women). While individual approaches to self-advocacy varied, participants identified a process of “recognizing the normalization of disability discrimination and disability stigma” which necessitates the development of “agency in self-advocacy.” This process has a lasting impact on people that includes a shared embodied experience of disability, as well as a sense of empowerment based on their collective and individual identities. Conclusions. Findings have implications for supporting individual disability consumer advocacy efforts as well as the need to address the normalization of disability discrimination within healthcare systems levels.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Research has shown that attitudes toward different disabilities form a hierarchy, with observers exhibiting more positive attitudes toward persons with physical disabilities than toward persons with psychiatric disabilities. In addition, investigations of attitudes toward persons with a disability indicate that they are often perceived as asexual. The current study examined whether involvement of persons with either a physical or psychiatric disability in a sexual relationship moderates the relation between their type of disability and attitudes toward them.METHOD: After reading one of six randomly assigned vignettes, university students (N = 195) filled out a semantic differential-based attitude scale (Katz & Shurka, 1977; Kravetz, Katz, & Albez, 1994). The six vignettes consisted of a male with a physical disability/with a psychiatric disability/without a disability, who was either involved/not involved in a sexual relationship.RESULTS: An interaction between type of disability and involvement in a sexual relationship was found for two subscales of the attitudes scale, occupation and intelligence. Involvement in a sexual relationship was found to generate more positive attitudes when the target person had a physical disability but more negative attitudes when he had a psychiatric disability.CONCLUSIONS: Involvement in a sexual relationship seems to work in favor of persons with a physical disability because of the association of such a relationship with normality and adaptation. However, attributing such a relationship to persons with a psychiatric disability seems to be stigmatic.

Abstract:The article describes models of disability that reflect society's attitude to people with disabilities in different periods of historical development, in particular moral (according to it, disability is a way to atone for sins caused by negative behavior), medical (disability leads to a vital need for treatment and support to compensate for it negative consequences), charitable as a type of medical (consists in the need to compensate people for the problems caused by disability), social (disability causes problems for a person due to the barrier environment in which he lives) and human rights (disability according to this model is not a sentence, people , who have health disorders at the same level as society are subjects who ensure their comfort). Against this background, historical parallels are given and approaches to the perception of people with disabilities in certain periods of the historical development of society are described. The legislative definitions of the concept of «person with disabilities» since 1991 have been analyzed and a positive trend towards humanizing the perception of such people as equal members of society and bringing the relevant terminology into line with international approaches, in particular reflected in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, has been revealed. In Ukraine, the medical model of disability prevails, after the ratification of the Convention, the model used in our country can rather be called mixed, because the state policy regarding social and legal protection of people with disabilities is characterized by both the aspect of material support and the creation of conditions for self-realization, participation in society and a number of other aspects. The development of the disability institute has gone through stages from rejection to comprehensive support. At the same time, it is not fundamentally interdependent with historical periods, since certain characteristics of the disability models listed above can still be traced in state policies. Accordingly, the concept of "person with a disability" developed on the territory of our country. It was noted that in 2011 the cited definition was humanized with an emphasis on the state's duty to create conditions for the equality of people with disabilities and provide them with social protection. In particular, according to the Law of that time and until now, a person with a disability is considered a person with a persistent disorder of body functions, which, when interacting with the external environment, can lead to the limitation of his life activities, as a result of which the state is obliged to create conditions for the exercise of his rights on an equal basis with other citizens and ensure its social protection. It is noted that as a result of a certain life situation, every person can get an injury, disease, etc., which will cause the emergence of experiences related to health disorders and, accordingly, disability. As a result, problems may arise that people with disabilities have to face, including: barrier of the external environment, lack of income to purchase medicines, unavailability of certain types of services (medical, rehabilitation, etc.). Therefore, "disability" can affect every person. Therefore, the state policy regarding the legal and social protection of people with disabilities, the practice of its implementation and the attitude of society towards such people should be democratic and humane, meet the interests of people with disabilities, taking into account the best international experience.

Abstract:Oppressive stereotypes of invalidity and tragedy have positioned loss and grieving as contested issues in the field of disability studies. Ascriptions of 'denial' are rejected by many disabled people, as a reductive medicalisation of their lived reality. For these and other reasons, this paper asserts that disabled people are afforded limited or awkward social spaces for grief, be it to do with social positioning, embodiment, or any other aspect of human experience. This is significant because grieving may have an important relationship with political mobilisation, both personal and collective. The paper presents autoethnographic material from the life of the second author, who has lived with quadriplegia for more than three decades. Using ideas from critical psychoanalysis it traces how political, relational and intrapsychic mechanisms constrain and sanction his expression of feelings of loss, contributing to a relational predicament of melancholic suspension, analogous to that attributed to subordinated racial groups. Here, one is forced to strive for assimilation into an unattainable, ideal social role, while simultaneously being alienated from one's inner experience, with implications for both creativity and personal power. The paper concludes that, paradoxically, stereotypes are countered not by dissociation from grief, but rather the claiming of it.

Abstract:Neuropalliative care developed to address the needs of patients living with life‐limiting neurologic disease. One critical consideration is that disease‐related changes to cognition, communication, and function challenge illness experiences and care practices. We conducted an ethnography to understand neuropalliative care as a phenomenon; how it was experienced, provided, conceptualized. Personhood served as our conceptual framework; with its long philosophical history and important place in nursing theory, we examined the extent to which it captured neuropalliative experiences and concerns. Personhood contextualized complex losses, aligning the impact of functional and relational changes. Cognition, communication, and functional alterations stretched conceptions of personhood, insinuating it can be relational, fluid, adaptive. Although normative conceptions of personhood guided research and decision‐making, ethical considerations suggested personhood could be transformed, remade. We consider the implications of our findings through three themes. First, we examine how literature on illness experience fails to integrate the realities of people living with and dying from neurologic disease; we counter this by interrogating the concept of experience. Second, we turn to Ricoeur's work on recognition to illuminate relational conceptions of personhood to inform care practices. Finally, we reflect on how personhood can bridge the gap left by functional changes, enhance relational engagement, and promote dignity at the end of life.

Abstract:ABSTRACTDisability in anglophone media, film and culture is often depicted in ways that rarely recognise people with disabilities as whole human beings. This creates deficit perceptions on what it means to live with a disability. Through the use of photo-voice, fifteen working-class coloured men living with paraplegia in the townships of Cape Town - South Africa, created photo-stories depicting the ways in which they think main-stream society sees them and the ways in which they see themselves. The analysis of their photo-stories was used to contribute to a discourse on photo-voice as activism. The photo-stories raise social awareness on the ways in which disability is socially (mis)understood and (mis)represented in their communities. This work contributes to the development of the affirmative model (Swain & French. 2000 Towards an affirmation model of disability. Abstract:Throughout history, disability has been understood in different ways: as a curse, a biomedical condition, a societal/political problem, a minority identity, and a social and cultural construction. Disability understandings reflect society's legislation and the character of social support for people with disability and vice versa. In this article, qualitative interviews with adults with cerebral palsy were analyzed with a focus on how care, as a fundamental need between people, might be mediated by implicit and explicit understandings of disability. The central focus lies in how historical paradigms of disability and caregiving are reflected in the lived experiences of adults with cerebral palsy. The findings were overall twofold. First, contemporary disability understandings do not substitute former understandings but coexist as superimposed practices of care. Second, new perspectives of disability and care emerged emphasizing equitable relationships, empowerment, and solidarity. It is discussed how premodern, modern, late modern, and postmodern understandings of disability shape the nature of care directed at people with disability in a Western welfare context and how practices of care can contribute to the advancement of social justice.

Abstract:In a double-blind study, time production tasks and clinical tests of memory function were performed by 15 normal subjects given placebo and "social" doses of alcohol (ethyl alcohol) and marihuana, calibrated to (-)-δ 1 -tetrahydrocannabinol. Using subjects as their own controls, it was found that, compared to alcohol and placebo, marihuana induced a significant under production of time intervals suggesting an acceleration of the internal clock. At these dose levels, there were no significant changes in memory function, but during marihuana intoxication some consistent trends toward greater impairment of tracking information over time were noted.

Abstract:Americans with disabilities represent the largest historically underserved and marginalized health disparity population in the United States. This perspective piece will raise the awareness of physical therapist faculty and clinicians on gaps in health care provider knowledge about disability and provide actionable strategies, frameworks, and resources available to improve disability competence to make changes in clinical education and practice. In this perspective piece, 3 contributions are made. First, health disparities experienced by Americans with disabilities as a result of health care providers' biased assumptions about disability and lack of disability competence are described through an in-depth illustration of lived experiences of people with disabilities. Second, a discussion of disability competence in physical therapist education is provided. Finally, critical and evidence-based insights and actionable frameworks and resources to address disability competence training gaps and to promote anti-ableist practice are provided.

Abstract:Lee HJ, Kim IO, Kim TK, et al. Dynamic enhancement features of gadophrin-2 on magnetic resonance imaging: An experimental model of vx2 carcinoma and bacterial abscess in rabbit thigh. Invest Radiol 2002;37:663–671. Rationale and Objectives. To determine the dynamic enhancement features of malignant tumor and bacterial abscess in rabbits on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after injection of gadolinium mesoporphyrin (gadophrin-2) and to correlate them with histopathologic findings. Methods.Six VX2 carcinomas and six bacterial abscesses were experimentally induced in either thigh of six rabbits. Dynamic T1-weighted MRI was performed before and 1, 3, 5, 10, 30 minutes and 16, 21, 72 hours after intravenous injection of gadophrin-2 (0.05 mmol/kg). The enhancement ratios of lesions were calculated for each time point. All tumors and abscesses were sectioned along the same plane of MR images for a detailed MRI-histopathologic correlation. Results.In tumors and abscesses, peripheral-rim enhancement appeared on MRI at 1, 3, 5, 10, 30 minutes after injection of gadophrin-2. The lesions showed peripheral enhancement with irregular central enhancement or diffuse enhancement after 16 and 21 hours, and there was diffuse enhancement of the entire lesion after 72 hours. Enhancement ratios in tumor-necrosis mixed area and the pure necrotic area in VX2 carcinoma and the central cavity in bacterial abscess were significantly lower than that in the compact cellular portion in VX2 carcinoma and the wall of abscess at early phase (P < 0.01). On delayed phase MRI, there was no statistical significance in enhancement ratio of three histologic parts of VX2 carcinoma (P > 0.05) and two histologic parts of abscess (P > 0.05). Rapid enhancement at early phase with diminishing signal intensity at delayed phase is indicative of viable compact tumor and delayed strong enhancement is indicative of necrosis. Conclusion.It is difficult to distinguish an abscess from a tumor on gadophrin-2 enhanced MRI especially when intratumoral necrosis is prominent. However, the trend and degree of enhancement by gadophrin-2 could be helpful in discrimination between viable tumor and tumor necrosis.

Abstract:Deinstitutionalization is a core policy for the development of services for people with intellectual disabilities (ID) in western countries. Nonetheless, although a western country, deinstitutionalization is not well advanced in Israel. In order to shed light on this phenomenon, we explore the hegemony of ID as reflected in Israeli legislation. The analysis shows a biomedical hegemony; ID is depicted as a form of medical and social deviance. Israel’s legislation reflects paternalistic views of persons with ID, who are largely seen as vulnerable objects of pity, to be cared for and protected.

The main idea of involving people with disabilities in physical culture and sports is not a struggle for victory and results, but uniting people with disabilities, expanding the boundaries of their capabilities and socializing in society - this is a very important aspect of the modern society development. This article examines currently important problem of socializing the disabled people in the field of physical culture and sports in competitive activities. Based on theoretical research methods, we studied and systematized the factors influencing the socialization of people with disabilities in physical activity. The article provides recommendations on how to organize work with people with disabilities, taking into account their physical and psychological conditions. Until today, the problems of this very significant group of people have been under insufficient attention. But, with the gradual development of the society towards greater humanization, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the World Program of Action for People with Disabilities and the UN Standard Rules on the implementation of equal opportunities for people with disabilities were developed and adopted. Most countries have also adopted laws that draws attention to the problems faced by people with disabilities.

Abstract:A report of 53 cases of formic acid ingestion with suicidal intention is presented. The patients were seen in one hospital in Kerala State over a 3 year period. Fifteen patients died and 38 patients survived. The pattern of clinical features seen is presented.
