Abstract:Clinicopathological features of 25 nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) patients in Japan were analysed. To investigate the clinicopathological significance of tissue associated macrophages (TAM) in NLPHL, CD68 and CD163 expression were investigated. The median age at onset was 56 years (range: 6–82 years) with male predominance (64%). All patients presented with lymph node enlargement with predilection for cervical LNs. Seven cases (28%) had mediastinal lesion and four (16%) had extranodal involvement. Most cases (76%) presented with early clinical stages. After median follow up of 44 months, both of overall and progression free survival rates were 95%. The presence of >5% CD68+ TAM in NLPHL was significantly associated with older age at diagnosis (median, 71 vs 52.5 years; P = 0.048), lower hemoglobin level (33.3% vs 0%; P = 0.037) and lower CR rate after initial treatment (42.9% vs 91.7%; P = 0.038). The presence of >5% CD163+ TAM was significantly correlated with presence of B symptoms (40% vs 0%; P = 0.036). In conclusion, NLPHL is rare among Japanese and appears to present at an older age than among Western patients. In our series, the presence of >5% CD68+ TAM in NLPHL was associated with lower CR rate, but with no impact on patients' survival.
Assessment of metal(loid) and natural radionuclide pollution in surface sediments of an estuary affected by mining and phosphogypsum releases

Abstract:The prolonged impact over the Tinto River estuary by both the significant pollution by acid mine drainage (AMD) affecting this river and the polluted releases from phosphogypsum (PG) piles has led to the severe environmental degradation of this ecosystem. The aim of this work was to assess the current environmental quality of the Tinto River estuary through the study of the spatial distribution of metal(loid)s and natural radionuclides in the surface sediments from the channel edge. The sediments contain mean concentrations 5-20 times higher than the background values for pollutants such as Zn, As, Cu, Pb, or U, and up to two orders of magnitude higher for P. The studied sediments are heavily polluted by toxic heavy metals and metalloids (Pb, Zn, Cu, and As) according to the US EPA guidelines. Most of the analyzed sediment samples are also strongly polluted by long-lived natural radionuclides, mainly U-isotopes and 210Pb with concentrations up to one order of magnitude higher than unpolluted sediments, mostly due to the contribution by the PG leachates. The enrichment factors (EF) were extremely high (EF > 50) for As and very severe enrichment (25 ≤ EF < 50) for P, Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb.

Abstract:Since 1952, liquid radioactive effluent containing238-242Pu, 241Am, 237Np, 137Cs, and 99Tc has been released with authorization from the Sellafield nuclear complex (UK) into the Irish Sea. This represents the largest source of plutonium (Pu) discharged in all western Europe, with 276 kg having been released. In the Eastern Irish Sea, the majority of the transuranic activity has settled into an area of sediments (Mudpatch) located off the Cumbrian coast. Radionuclides from the Mudpatch have been re-dispersed via particulate transport in fine-grained estuarine and intertidal sediments to the North-East Irish Sea, including the intertidal saltmarsh located at the mouth of the Esk Estuary. Saltmarshes are highly dynamic systems which are vulnerable to external agents (sea level change, erosion, sediment supply, and freshwater inputs), and their stability remains uncertain under current sea level rise projections and possible increases in storm activity. In this work, we examined factors affecting Pu mobility in contaminated sediments collected from the Esk Estuary by conducting leaching experiments under both anoxic and oxic conditions. Leaching experiments were conducted over a 9-month period and were periodically sampled to determine solution phase Pu via multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS), and to measure redox indicators (Eh, pH and extractable Fe(II)). Microbial community composition was also characterized in the sediments, and at the beginning and end of the anoxic/oxic experiments. Results show that: 1) Pu leaching is about three times greater in solutions leached under anoxic conditions compared to oxic conditions, 2) the sediment slurry microbial communities shift as conditions change from anoxic to oxic, 3) Pu leaching is enhanced in the shallow sediments (0-10 cm depth), and 4) the magnitude of Pu leached from sediments is not correlated with total Pu, indicating that the biogeochemistry of sediment-associated Pu is spatially heterogeneous. These findings provide constraints on the stability of redox sensitive Pu in biogeochemically dynamic/transient environments on a timescale of months and suggests that anoxic conditions can enhance Pu mobility in estuarine systems.

Abstract:The vertical distribution pattern and concentrations of elements (Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Zn, and As) in the estuarine and lagoon region of Marquelia coast, Guerrero, Mexico, were studied to comprehend the origin and pollutant phases of geochemical elements. Henceforth, two sediment core samples [C1 (127 cm) and C2 (110 cm)] were collected to assess the pollution status using geochemical indices, namely anthropogenic factor (AF), enrichment factor (EF), and geoaccumulation index (Igeo). Additionally, the elemental concentrations were compared with the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) to examine the potential risks to biota. Among the two depositional environments, the sediments of lagoon Apozahualco exhibited higher concentrations of elements. The granulometry characteristics of sediment grains also attested that the concentration and mobilization of metals are largely governed by the fine-grained fractions. Major elemental concentration and grain size changes were identified at several depths (30–40, 60–70, and 90–100 cm) revealing the internal hydrodynamic condition. The overall assessment of geochemical indices revealed that the sediments were unpolluted to moderately polluted. The anthropogenic factor indicated that the upper portion of the sediments were affected by anthropogenic influences. The comparison of trace element concentration with SQGs denoted that Cr, Ni, and As could pose potential adverse effect to the organisms that live in and near the sedimentary environment. Factor analysis revealed the origin and behaviour of the studied elements during transportation and deposition processes in both the ecosystems (i.e. estuary and lagoon). The results of this study provided an in-depth understanding of variations in elemental concentration and pollution status of sediment profile in coastal transitional environments that would aid in sustainable management.

Abstract:In ecosystems, natural radionuclides are present in the environment and living organisms. The 238U natural decay chain produces multiple radioactive elements, such as 234U, 226Ra, 210Pb, and 210Po. These radionuclides can be found in air, water, rocks, soil, and other biotic and abiotic components, mainly derived from minerals, such as zircon and apatite. In this study, we determined the activity concentration of radionuclides from the 238U decay chain in the sediment of a coastal ecosystem on the southern Mexican coast in the western Caribbean, an ecosystem minimally affected by industrial activities. Methods included high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry and alpha-particle spectrometry. Results showed that the sediment samples had an activity concentration range of 18.2-36.6 Bq/kg for 238U, 25.0-41.4 Bq/kg for 234U, 10.1-37.3 Bq/kg for 210Pb, and 29.9-46.0 Bq/kg for 210Po. Water samples ranged between 17.9 and 36.3 mBq/L and 27.9-66.0 mBq/L for 238U and 234U, respectively. The activity concentration of these radionuclides in the sediment and water of this area is compared with that of other coral reefs worldwide, providing a radiometric baseline for comparison purposes.

Abstract:Anthropogenic Pu isotopes are important geochemical tracers for sediment studies. Their distributions and sources in the water columns as well as the sediments of the North Pacific have been intensively studied; however, information about Pu in the Southeast Asian seas is limited. To study the isotopic composition of Pu, and thus to identify its sources, we collected sediment core samples in the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea during the KH-96-5 Cruise of the R/V Hakuho Maru. We analysed the activities of (239+240)Pu and the atom ratios of (240)Pu/(239)Pu using isotope dilution sector-field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SF-ICP-MS). The (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratios in the sediments of both areas (inventory weighted mean: 0.251 for the South China Sea and 0.280 for the Sulu Sea) were higher than the global fallout value (0.178+/-0.019), suggesting the existence of Pu from the Pacific Proving Grounds in the North Pacific. Low inventories of (239+240)Pu in sediments were observed in the South China Sea (3.75 Bq/m(2)) and the Sulu Sea (1.38 Bq/m(2)). Most of the Pu input is still present in the water column. Scavenging and benthic mixing processes were considered to be the main processes controlling the distribution of Pu in the deep-sea sediments of both study areas.

Abstract:This study examines the mercury content in the marine matrices water column, surface sediment and benthic invertebrates of Coronel and Coliumo bays, central Chile, under winter and summer conditions. Coronel Bay has been subject to intense industrialization in the last three decades, while Coliumo Bay remains as a fisherman's cove and a popular summer tourism destination. Our results reveal significantly higher mercury concentrations in the three environmental matrices analyzed for Coronel Bay, while Coliumo Bay exhibits levels within the range considered natural. Moreover, the mercury levels in Coronel Bay exceed the optimal criteria for aquatic life, indicating a deterioration in environmental quality of this locality. Industrial development is identified as main factor explaining the differences observed between these two coastal water bodies. This study presents the most updated record of mercury levels in the Southeast Pacific and represents the first comprehensive evaluation of marine environmental matrices in two bays with divergent activities.

Abstract:The Yangtze Yangtze River is the largest single source of sediment to the continental shelf of the East China Sea. The quantity of material exported by the river is expected to decrease substantially as a consequence of an extensive continuing program of dam construction within the river catchment. We report here AMS measurements of plutonium isotope concentrations and ratios for selected depth increments from a sediment core, collected from the sub-aqueous delta of the Yangtze River estuary. The Pu derives from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s and 1960s, and is potentially a useful tracer of sediment deposition times in the marine environment. The results show considerable structure in the depth-concentration profile, and offer an excellent opportunity to compare Pu with the more commonly used Cs-137 isotopic tracer. The AMS data show superior sensitivity and indicate that the Pu-249/Pu-239 ratio can provide a check on the deposition dates. The changes in the Pu-249 and Pu-239 concentrations and the Pu-249/Pu-239 ratios with sediment depth all indicate the possibility of using Pu as a geochronological tool for coastal sediment studies. Abstract:Purpose Currently, the distribution characteristics and transport processes of the radionuclides 137 Cs and 239 + 240 Pu in the sediments of estuaries are still a controversial issue. Thus, in the present study, we investigated the distribution characteristics, sources and migration path of 137 Cs and 239 + 240 Pu in sediment cores of the Liao River estuary (LRE), China, and evaluated the relative contributions of the Pacific Proving Grounds (PPG) and riverine sources of Pu for the sediments in this area. We used 137 Cs and Pu isotopes for dating the sediments and estimated the sedimentation rates by the two radionuclides in the LRE. Materials and methods Seven sediment samples were collected using a box corer from the Liao River estuarine wetland and tidal flat in the LRE in October 2012 and April 2015, respectively. The activities of 137 Cs in the various samples were determined by γ spectrometry using HP-Ge detectors with 60% relative counting efficiency. Approximately 2–5 g of sediment were spiked with 242 Pu (ca. 1 mBq) as a chemical yield tracer for Pu isotopic analysis at the School of Radiation Medicine and Protection, Soochow University. The measurement of Pu isotopes ( 239 Pu, 240 Pu, 242 Pu) was performed by a sector field ICP-MS. In order to quantitatively differentiate the relative proportions of global fallout and PPG, we employed a two-end member mixing model to estimate their contributions. Results and discussion The average values of 137 Cs, 239 + 240 Pu activity concentrations, and 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atom ratios in the surface sediment samples of the LRE were 6.727 ± 0.251 mBq g −1 , 0.294 ± 0.024 mBq g −1 , and 0.188 ± 0.049 (1 σ ), respectively. The average 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atom ratios ranged from 0.180 ± 0.034 to 0.199 ± 0.021 in sediment cores from the east and west sides of the LRE. For core LT-2 values for 137 Cs and 239 + 240 Pu concentrations were from below the detection limit: 3.380 ± 0.414 and 0.036 ± 0.007 to 0.105 ± 0.007 mBq g −1 . The mean 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atom ratio 0.217 ± 0.050 (1 σ ) in sediment core LT-2 lies between the global fallout and PPG close-in fallout. Conclusions We found that atmospheric fallout is the main source of Pu in sediment cores from the east and west sides of the LRE. For core LT-2, atmospheric fallout and riverine input (~ 73.4%) are the major sources of Pu with the source of the rest of Pu (~ 26.6%) attributed to the PPG via the Tsushima Warm Current and the coastal water of the East China Sea. The sedimentation rates (means 0.62–0.8 cm year −1 ) estimated by the two radionuclides were in good agreement and without any statistically significant difference.

Abstract:A sediment core collected from the sub-aqueous delta of the Yangtze River estuary was subjected to analyses of (137)Cs and plutonium (Pu) isotopes. The (137)Cs was measured using γ-spectrometry at the laboratories at the Nanjing University and Pu isotopes were determined with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), measurements made at the Australian National University. The results show considerable structure in the depth concentration profiles of the (137)Cs and (239+240)Pu. The shape of the vertical (137)Cs distribution in the sediment core was similar to that of the Pu. The maximum (137)Cs and (239+240)Pu concentrations were 16.21 ± 0.95 mBq/g and 0.716 ± 0.030 mBq/g, respectively, and appear at same depth. The average (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratio was 0.238 ± 0.007 in the sediment core, slightly higher than the average global fallout value. The changes in the (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratios in the sediment core indicate the presence of at least two different Pu sources, i.e., global fallout and another source, most likely close-in fallout from the Pacific Proving Grounds (PPG) in the Marshall Islands, and suggest the possibility that Pu isotopes are useful as a geochronological tool for coastal sediment studies. The (137)Cs and (239+240)Pu inventories were estimated to be 7100 ± 1200 Bq/m(2) and 407 ± 27 Bq/m(2), respectively. Approximately 40% of the (239+240)Pu inventory originated from the PPG close-in fallout and about 50% has derived from land-origin global fallout transported to the estuary by the river. This study confirms that AMS is a useful tool to measure (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratio and can provide valuable information on sedimentary processes in the coastal environment.

Abstract:In a previous paper from our research group we showed a means of concurrency control which was consistent with the requirement of both actor-based concurrency and inheritance. This synchronization method, called behavior abstractions, was expressed in terms of the ACT++ prototype. Limitations on the behavior abstraction concept have been noted and alternatives proposed by others. We present in this paper an extension to the behavior abstraction concept which deals with its observed limitations. This extension is called behavior sets.

Abstract:This study focuses on analyzing the chemistry and mineralogy of marine sediments collected in the Strait of Magellan and around the region. The purpose of this study is to comprehend the distribution, concentration and provenance of critical/strategic elements and precious metals. In collaboration with the Cabo de Hornos research vessel of the Chilean Navy, these samples underwent petrographic and geochemical analysis. In summary, the presented results provide valuable insights into the geological and geochemical baseline of the region, offering a better understanding of the relationship with depositional basins and source zones onshore during the late‐Quaternary. Chilean Patagonia has a complex geological history dominated recently by Quaternary glaciers and rivers that have carried sediments from the mountains to depositional environments within marine fjords and channels. Although much is known about onshore placer deposits, little is known about these deposits and depositional systems in the offshore realm. This study analyzes the chemistry and mineralogy of marine sediments collected in the Strait of Magellan and around the region. This study aims to comprehend the distribution, concentration and provenance of critical/strategic elements and precious metals. In collaboration with the Cabo de Hornos research vessel of the Chilean Navy, 63 sediment samples were collected using a box core sampler, complemented with coastal beach samples. These samples underwent petrographic and geochemical analysis. The predominant opaque minerals identified in these samples are mainly iron oxides (magnetite–hematite‐ilmenite) and sulfides (pyrite, exceptional greigite). A comparison of the average element concentration for all samples for different baseline values revealed the following findings. As, Bi, Li, Re, Sb, Se, Te, and Pd exhibit positive anomalies for the Upper Continental Crust (UCC); Re, Se, and Sr. exhibit positive anomalies for Marine Sediments (MS), and Bi, Cs, Li, Re, Se, Sn, and Te show positive anomalies relative to the Folded Belt (FB). The main contrast anomalies occur in the following locations. Almirantazgo Sound (Sn, Ba, Sb, and Tm); Concepción Channel (Re, Sr., and Te); Smyth Channel (Mn, Re, Sb, Sr., Te, and Se); Almirante Montt Gulf (Mn, Re, and Sb); Nelson Strait (Re, Sr., and Te); Ancho Pass (Ti and Sr); Europa Fjord (Bi and Sn); Del Hambre Pass (Sr); Magdalena Channel and Sound (Sr); Froward Pass (Se), and Whiteside Channel (Mn). Regarding precious metals, silver exhibits contrasting anomalies relative to the UCC in seafloor sediments in the Almirante Montt Gulf (0.161 ppm) and Concepción Channel (0.101 ppm). Palladium contrast anomaly is observed in the Peel Estuary (8 ppb) and Platinum contrast anomalies occur in the Concepción (3 and 5 ppb) and Smyth Channels (4 ppb). Finally, gold, in comparison to the South Patagonian Batholith, reveals contrasting anomalies that occur in the Concepción Channel (8 ppb), Peel Estuary (6.7 and 8 ppb), Nelson Strait (7 ppb), Almirante Montt Gulf (6 ppb), Forward Pass (8 ppb), and Ancho Pass (7 ppb). In summary, the presented results provide valuable insights into the geological and geochemical baseline of the region, offering a better understanding of the relationship with depositional basins and source zones onshore during the late‐Quaternary.

Abstract:Terminos Lagoon (TL), in the southern Gulf of Mexico, has been under intensive anthropogenic pressure (e.g., oil-industry development) since the 1970s. Historical changes in flux ratios of potentially toxic elements (PTEs; As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Zn) were, for the first time, assessed inside TL by using 210 Pb-dated sediment cores. Sediments showed minor enrichments for Cd, Ni, Pb, and V. However, according to international benchmarks, the As, Cr, Cu, and Ni concentrations could pose a risk for benthic biota. Sedimentary processes involved in the accumulation of PTEs were identified through a chemometric approach. Increments in PTEs flux ratios concur with the recent (⁓50 years) and extensive land-use changes, particularly the transport and deposit of materials delivered by rivers. These findings are expected to be used in managing this crucial natural resource, the larger Mexican coastal lagoon ecosystem, to mitigate the effects of global change.

Abstract:The China Sea is faced with a heightened risk of anthropogenic radionuclide contamination, whose provenance, scavenging and migration are imperative to investigate to provide the background and nuclear safety emergency assessment. This study pioneers the measurement of anthropogenic plutonium and neptunium (239+240Pu and 237Np) concentrations and atom ratios (240Pu/239Pu and 237Np/239Pu) in sediment cores from the northern Taiwan Strait and the adjacent East China Sea using SF-ICP-MS, exploring their applications and characteristics. Typical vertical profiles confirm that Pu and 237Np serve as geochronological tools, with the 240Pu/239Pu atom ratio as a fingerprint refining the chronology. Fallout history and sedimentary environments have been reconstructed by the comprehensive application of 239+240Pu, 237Np and 210Pb chronologies. The primary sources of Pu isotopes and 237Np are global fallout and close-in fallout from the Pacific Proving Grounds (PPG). Inventories of 239+240Pu ranged from 44 ± 3 Bq/m2 to 348 ± 11 Bq/m2, with PPG contributions from 57% to 72%, while 237Np inventories varied from 58 ± 5 mBq/m2 to 137 ± 8 mBq/m2. Differences in the distribution of Pu and 237Np are attributed to their distinct behaviors and sedimentary environments. Particle-reactive Pu isotopes are predominantly preserved in sediment, whereas conservative 237Np remains mostly dissolved in water, easily re-entering seawater from sediment through resuspension processes. Higher environmental mobility also makes more downward diffusion of 237Np than Pu isotopes.

Abstract:The Huelva estuary is formed by the common mouths of the Odiel and Tinto Rivers, and inside this ecosystem is the biosphere reserve of the Odiel saltmarshes. This ecosystem has been historically affected by acid mine drainage (AMD) and by releases of pollutants from five phosphoric acid industrial plants and phosphogypsum (PG) waste stacks located in the area. This study carried out a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of the biosphere reserve of the Odiel saltmarshes. To this end, it was necessary to find a suitable sedimentary background (Piedras River in our case). To quantify this impact, several pollution indexes were used. According to the values reached by the indexes, this impact was classified as "serious" pollution for most trace elements, excepting the deepest layers, and "low-moderate" pollution for the 238U-series radionuclides, while no pollution for the 232Th-series and 40K radionuclides was found as expected.

Abstract:The assessment of the origin of the anthropogenic contamination in marine regions impacted by other sources than global fallout is a challenge. This is the case of the west coast of Sweden, influenced by the liquid effluents released by the European Nuclear Reprocessing Plants through North Sea currents and by Baltic Sea local and regional sources, among others. This work focused on the study of anthropogenic actinides (${}^{236}$U, ${}^{237}$Np and ${}^{239,240}$Pu) in seawater and biota from a region close to Gothenburg where radioactive wastes with an unknown composition were dumped in 1964. To this aim, a radiochemical procedure for the sequential extraction of U, Np and Pu from biota samples and the subsequent analysis of ${}^{236}$U, ${}^{237}$Np, ${}^{239}$Pu and ${}^{240}$Pu by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry was developed. The method was validated through the study of two reference materials provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA): IAEA-446 (Baltic Sea seaweed) and IAEA-437 (Mediterranean Sea mussels). The ${}^{233}$U$/{}^{236}$U atom ratio was also studied in the seawater samples. The obtained results indicate that the North Sea currents and global fallout are the major sources for ${}^{236}$U, ${}^{237}$Np and ${}^{239,240}$Pu to the studied area, with any clear evidence of other local sources. Complementary, information on the Concentrations Factors (CF) in biota was obtained, for which the available information is very scarce. For seaweed, CF values of $(4.1 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{3}$, $88 \pm 51$ and $70 \pm 20$ have been obtained for Pu, Np and U, respectively. Lower CF values of $(3.6 \pm 1.2) \times 10^{2}$, $37 \pm 15$ and $15.1 \pm 5.2$ for Pu, Np and U, respectively, have been obtained for mussels.

Abstract:The combustion of alkyl-lead gasolines was the primary anthropogenic source of Pb in the second half of the twentieth century. Previously deposited Pb-aerosols enriched the organic matter and Fe-oxi-hydroxides phases of soils, which long after continue being transported downstream to be an important source of Pb into the ocean. Geochemical partition of Pb was determined in estuarine sediments of the Jamapa River, southern Gulf of Mexico, by the Tessier's sequential extraction protocol. The residual fraction, conformed by siliciclastic particles, contain the highest proportion of Pb (8.6 μg/g = 70%), been the main source into the ocean. However, as the organic carbon and Fe,MnO(OH) fractions, together summed the 26% of total Pb in samples, so, it is assumed that previously deposited anthropogenic Pb, from alkyl-lead gasolines, still is an important source of this element, that is transported by the Jamapa River, enriching the coastal area.

Abstract:Plutonium (Pu) isotopes were first determined in surface and core sediment samples collected from the northern North Yellow Sea (NYS) to elucidate their source terms and deposition process as well as the response to catchment environmental changes of inflow rivers. 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios in all sediments showed the typical global fallout value of ∼0.18 without any influences from the nuclear weapons tests conducted recently in the North Korea or early in the Pacific Proving Ground. The large variation of 239+240Pu activities (0.022–0.515 mBq/g) observed in surface sediments should be mainly attributed to the re-suspension and transportation of fine sediments influenced by the Liaonan Costal Current. Based on the two 239+249Pu depth profiles with easily observed onset fallout levels (1952) and global fallout peaks (1963), 239+240Pu served as a valid time mark in the coastal sedimentary system. Riverine input Pu contributed only 15–27% to the total global fallout inventory (92.5–108.8 Bq/m2) in the northern NYS, much lower than that in the Yangtze River estuary (77–80%), indicating a better soil conservation in the northeast China due to higher forest coverage compared to the Yangtze River's drainage basin. The increase of riverine input Pu after 1980s reflected the more intense soil erosion degree caused by the land use and cover change due to the increment of human activities in the northeast China at the same period. Our results demonstrated that plutonium is a good indicator for studying sedimentary process and its response to the environment in the coastal area.
