Abstract:Affect Theory and Literary Critical Practice develops new approaches to reading literature that are informed by the insights of scholars working in affect studies across many disciplines, with essays that consider works of fiction, drama, poetry and memoir ranging from the medieval to the postmodern. While building readings of representative texts, contributors reflect on the value of affect theory to literary critical practice, asking: what explanatory power is affect theory affording me here as a critic? what can the insights of the theory help me do with a text? Contributors work to incorporate lines of theory not always read together, accounting for the affective intensities that circulate through texts and readers and tracing the operations of affectively charged social scripts. Drawing variously on queer, feminist and critical race theory and informed by ecocritical and new materialist sensibilities, essays in the volume share a critical practice founded in an ethics of relation and contribute to an emerging moment of postcritique.

Abstract:Abstract This essay works at the intersection of black feminism and trans studies to reflect on the radical possibilities for the futures of transgender studies and politics. Drawing on ethnographic data with a large-scale LGBTQ service organization, and focusing specifically on an example of the backlash that a black cisgender- and queer-identified woman received for coordinating a transgender-focused event, the article interrogates the ways in which the cisgender/transgender binary, pervasive in trans studies and trans organizing, counterintuitively reinforces the racialized gendered subjugation of black women. To circumvent the subjugation of black feminine bodies and thus harness the radical potential of trans studies and organizing, the author proposes a conception of trans coalitional love-politics. This is a reading and political practice that explodes the cis/trans binary and thus imagines more robust possibilities for racialized gendered justice.

Abstract:Making sense of normalized feelings in teacher education, scholarship on race and gender has spotlighted the affective and emotional landscapes of teaching and detailed how the profession has been shaped around its primary workers, cisgender straight white women. Dis affection, though, or unfeeling in ways that disrupt the sociality of affective norms, provides one conceptual and methodological tool for shifting well-worn patterns of normalized feelings in teacher education. Revisiting data from two previous studies of teachers' affective practices, we used disaffection as a lens to analyze interview and group session transcripts, interpreting how unfeeling disrupts the racialized and gendered norms of grieving and liberationist politics of outness in classrooms. Inviting antisociality, disaffection offers researchers and educators a methodological expansion for studying affect, emotion, and feeling in teacher education, specifically by looking for the absent presence of unfeeling.

Abstract:This article advances a synthetic framework for examining the relationship between affect and power. Combining critical discursive psychology with analyses of stance and emotion thematization, the framework enables a dialogic analysis of the macro and micro levels on which affect weaves into social life. The approach is applied in an analysis of women’s talk about their hair, which they construct as ‘black’ or ‘African’. Guided by the notion of ‘affective-discursive practice’, the article investigates the relationship between affect and meaning-making revealed in talk, as well as relations of power that arise from it. In the analysis, individuals are found to articulate their affective experiences in unlike ways and to hence position themselves differently in relation to the hegemonic discourses of beauty and race. The article discusses how the dialogic research on affect and discourse enriches our understanding of the role of feelings in the micropolitics of everyday life.

Abstract:This essay draws on the concept of “difficult knowledge” to think with some of the interventions and arguments of affect theory and discusses the implications for curriculum and pedagogy in handling traumatic representations. The author makes an argument that affect theory enables the theorization of difficult knowledge as an intersection of language, desire, power, bodies, social structure, materiality, and trauma. To show the possibilities of this theorization of difficult knowledge, the essay puts in conversation Judith Butler's work on vulnerability, affect, and grievable lives with scholarship on difficult knowledge. The essay leans on Butler's work and affect theory to make a political and pedagogical intervention into the terrain of learning and acting in the face of difficult knowledge. This intervention offers a conceptual, curricular, and pedagogical way out of dilemmas of representation and it is rooted in a political project of social action that does not disavow the psychical problematics residing therein.

Abstract:Within the past decade, treatment options for metastatic renal cell carcinoma have expanded dramatically. Currently, seven targeted agents are approved for use in metastatic renal cell carcinoma and have superseded the use of parenteral cytokine therapy with interleukin-2 or interferon, the former standards of care for metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Targeted agents include inhibitors of the vascular endothelial growth factor pathway (i.e. sorafenib, sunitinib, pazopanib, axitinib, and bevacizumab) and inhibitors of the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway (i.e. temsirolimus and everolimus). These newer therapies have been shown to improve progression-free survival compared with previous approaches. Because most of these targeted agents are taken orally, responsibility for dose administration has shifted to patients, which might result in variable adherence. Additionally, with new treatments for metastatic renal cell carcinoma comes the challenge of selecting dosing schemes that maximize therapeutic benefit and minimize adverse events. Much of the information related to the effectiveness of dose modifications for targeted therapies in metastatic renal cell carcinoma has been gathered from clinical studies that have strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, which might not translate directly to real-world patient populations. This review discusses the impact of dose adherence on the effectiveness of targeted agents to treat metastatic renal cell carcinoma, assesses the literature regarding the effectiveness of approved dosing strategies, and provides a summary of alternative dosing strategies.
How We Do the Work Is the Work: Building an Intersectional Queer Praxis for Critical Feminist Scholarship

Abstract:Affilia, Ahead of Print. In this reflection (which is a revised version of a recent keynote address), I invite feminist social work scholars to consider what it might look like to build our scholarship through an intersectional queer praxis. I posit that as critical feminist scholars, it is important that we consider not only the topics we study but also how we do our work. Specifically, I propose an intersectional queer praxis that brings together key tenets of Slow scholarship with queer lived experiences and critical theoretical lens(es) that assert that queer is destabilizing of dominant ideologies and a challenge to normative ways of being. I discuss four interrelated dimensions of intersectional queer praxis that draw upon Slow scholarship and elements of queer life: (1) reimagining time; (2) centering relationships, community care, and collaboration; (3) embracing complexity and disrupting binaries; and (4) attention to embodiment and emotion. I argue that employing this kind of intersectional queer praxis challenges dominant approaches to academic knowledge production and carries with it new possibilities and creative imaginings for how we do our work. This talk is an invitation to think collectively, to reflect, and to raise questions for us as social work scholars as we continue to build a more robust practice of critical feminist scholarship.

Abstract:Across a diverse set of texts from Japanese media and literature, including professional wrestling, avant-garde writing, and Zainichi Korean literature, this special section explores the fluid relationship between femininity and the body, where one is neither defined nor determined by the other. At the crossroads of Asian studies, gender studies, media, and literature, this collection offers an interdisciplinary and transnational lens to consider this relationship in a Japanese context. To borrow from Lee's deployment of Gloria Anzaldúa's “Border Women,” transgression provides these papers with a theoretical framework of inherent ambiguity that lingers between worlds—between the sanctioned and the unsanctioned, between performer and persona, between the reader and text. The papers presented here all treat femininity, not as an essentialized category of gendered experience, but as a liminal border zone in which conventional notions of gender, sexuality, and media become fluid and ambiguous. Whether it is the border between perfume advertising and avant-garde poetry, literary criticism and butoh dance, autobiographical writing and oral forms of nonverbal performance, or professional wrestling and documentary film, the papers featured here all transgress disciplinary borders of media and genre while interrogating and disrupting conventional notions of femininity.

Abstract:The “affective turn”which has gained enormous attention in recent years,has turned its focus from emotion of everyday life into the philosophical inquiry,including the causal relations between affects and body,of which the “biomedia”body is but one example.According to Spinoza,affect is defined as the modifications of the body;While body cannot determine mind to think,neither can mind determine body to move and everything will go back to the law of nature.Similarly,Massumi’s definition of affect as the abilities to affect and be affected also fo-cuses on bodily experiences.In AThousand Plateaus,Deleuze and Guattari took the example of Penthesilea,a German tragedy at the early of 1 9th century,to expound the affective features in Greek culture,regarding affects as a form of becoming,and holding that the success of the playlies in the intensifications of affects in the war machine.Lawrence Grossberg may be right:the“affective turn”could be a materialism,a naturalism,or even a mechanism,but it will eventually manifest a different postmodernism from the European mainstream tradition.

Abstract:This article explores the idea of a queer aesthetic sensibility and how it might provide ways of seeing, hearing, and feeling that help one better recognize the imminent potentialities that hide beneath the routine and expected rhythms of the everyday. Thinking alongside the work of Maxine Greene and Jose Esteban Muñoz, the article considers how aesthetic objects affirm one’s existence through the embodiment of gay desire, promoting imaginative action in the pursuit of new possibility. Such an orientation toward the aesthetic reveals an approach to educational practice that promises to promote the values of imagination, attentiveness, and possibility, rather than conformity, routine, and homogeneity, which are values essential to the survival of queer folks who must learn to find new possibilities for themselves and the world.

Abstract:This article explores a Black queer feminist frame of reference as a critical response to the cisnormative and heteronormative Black political science literature. The contours of this frame are derived from the political thought of Cathy J. Cohen. Cohen’s political thought provides an exemplary case of how Black queer feminist political science can address the lacuna in which Black queer and trans individuals are marginalized within, if not excluded from, the literature on Black political thought and behavior. Cohen’s work exposes oppressive systems, demystifies the nature of political power, and inspires counter-hegemonic knowledge production that challenges the rigidity of what and who counts as “legitimate” subjects for political science inquiries. Before synthesizing a sample of Cohen’s political thought, this article succinctly reviews Black political science, including Black feminist political science, detailing its history, problems, trends, and how scholars have tended to carry out Black politics work within the discipline. Black political science is critically placed in its activist-scholar context. This article argues that Black political scientists must continue to look inward, not only considering how race and racist knowledge has structured the discipline, but also how power is distributed among (and between) various groups of Black political scientists themselves. It is Black queer feminism that will continue to advance the radical imperative of Black political science.
Changes in Prodynorphin Gene Expression and Neuronal Morphology in the Hypothalamus of Postmenopausal Women

Abstract:Human menopause is characterised by ovarian failure, gonadotrophin hypersecretion and hypertrophy of neurones expressing neurokinin B (NKB), kisspeptin (KiSS)‐1 and oestrogen receptor (ER) α gene transcripts within the hypothalamic infundibular (arcuate) nucleus. In the arcuate nucleus of experimental animals, dynorphin, an opioid peptide, is colocalised with NKB, kisspeptin, ERα and progesterone receptors. Moreover, ovariectomy decreases the expression of prodynorphin gene transcripts in the arcuate nucleus of the ewe. Therefore, we hypothesised that the hypertrophied neurones in the infundibular nucleus of postmenopausal women would express prodynorphin mRNA and that menopause would be accompanied by changes in prodynorphin gene transcripts. In the present study, in situ hybridisation was performed on hypothalamic sections from premenopausal and postmenopausal women using a radiolabelled cDNA probe targeted to prodynorphin mRNA. Autoradiography and computer‐assisted microscopy were used to map and count labelled neurones, measure neurone size and compare prodynorphin gene expression between premenopausal and postmenopausal groups. Neurones expressing dynorphin mRNA in the infundibular nucleus of the postmenopausal women were larger and exhibited hypertrophied morphological features. Moreover, there were fewer neurones labelled with the prodynorphin probe in the infundibular nucleus of the postmenopausal group compared to the premenopausal group. The number of dynorphin mRNA‐expressing neurones was also reduced in the medial preoptic/anterior hypothalamic area of postmenopausal women without changes in cell size. No differences in cell number or size of dynorphin mRNA‐expressing neurones were observed in any other hypothalamic region. Previous studies using animal models provide strong evidence that the changes in prodynorphin neuronal size and gene expression in postmenopausal women are secondary to the ovarian failure of menopause. Given the inhibitory effect of dynorphin on the reproductive axis, decreased dynorphin gene expression could play a role in the elevation in luteinising hormone secretion that occurs in postmenopausal women.

Abstract:Abstract The introduction to the special issue of JAF “Redirecting Currents: Theoretical Wayfinding with Latinx Folkloristics and Women of Color Transnational Feminisms” approaches Latinx folklore studies from transnational feminist perspectives. The issue engages with folklore key terms used by researchers, community members, public sector workers, artists, and activists. By using an extended metaphor of aquatic movements, the introduction elucidates how lexical discontinuities and connections allow for a transparent conversation of intellectual and/or ethnographic distortions, and it acknowledges the power of writing as process and the politics of remapping the field of contemporary folklore studies. In this model, a metaphor of affective transcultural cartographies is employed to frame ideas in and of racialized spaces. The authors also discuss the poetics and historical entanglements of folklorists and postcolonial thought with the Enlightenment, and how these vexed and intimate relations are situated in language, culture, and power. The introduction summarizes the keyword essays that follow and also poses some questions about future work in folklore studies based on similar approaches.

Abstract:This article examines the ways in which the care-indifferent and gendered character of much political egalitarian theory has contributed to a disregard for the care-relational dimensions of social injustice within the social sciences. It demonstrates how the lack of in-depth engagement with affective relations of love, care and solidarity has contributed to an underestimation of their pivotal role in generating injustices in the production of people in their humanity. While humans are political, economic and cultural beings, they are also what Tronto has termed homines curans. Yet, care, in its multiple manifestations, is treated as a kind of ‘cultural residual’, an area of human life that the dominant culture neglects, represses and cannot even recognize for its political salience. If sociology takes the issue of relational justice as seriously as it takes issues of redistribution, recognition and political representation, this would provide an intellectual avenue for advancing scholarship that recognizes that much of life is lived, and injustices are generated, outside the market, formal politics and public culture. A new sociology of affective care relations could enhance a normatively-led sociology of inequality, that is distinguishable from, but intersecting with, a sociology of inequality based on class (redistribution), status (recognition) and power (representation). It would also help change public discourse about politics by making affective in/justices visible intellectually and politically, and in so doing, identifying ways in which they could be a site of resistance to capitalist values and processes.

Abstract:The introduction article of the special issue draws from a rich history of Asian American feminist activism, highlights the evolution of this movement across various domains, and emphasizes the role of intersectionality in combating racism, xenophobia, and misogyny. We propose an Asian Feminist Critical Race (AsianFemCrit) framework with activism as its praxis. Asian American feminist activism is a form of resistance and a transformative practice aimed at dismantling systematic inequalities and advocating for solidarity and justice. Through AsianFemCrit praxis, we offer (a) listening and storytelling and (b) community care and collective intergenerational healing as new ways of understanding our relationships with ourselves, our community, and our integrity. Articles in this special issue present a blend of theoretical insights, empirical studies, and practical interventions, offering a diverse view of Asian American feminist activism's past, present, and future trajectories. Through this lens, the special issue aims to advance understanding, inspire solidarity, and foster collective healing and liberation, underscoring the strength found in unity and celebrating the persistent spirit of Asian American feminist activism.

The Ties that Bind: Public Opinion and Linked Fate among Women of Color

Abstract:Although women of color share the same gender identity, their differing racial identities lead to questions about whether they might mobilize collectively over a shared political agenda. Using the 2020 Collaborative Multiracial Post-Election Survey, we examine how linked fate among women of color shapes the political attitudes and policy preferences of Black women, Latinas, and Asian American/Pacific Islander women. Our expectation is that linked fate toward women of color will shape perception and preferences in three particular issue areas: policies that are intended to reduce racial inequity (e.g., police reform), perceptions of gender discrimination, and social welfare policies aimed at aiding lower income individuals. Our results strongly confirm these expectations indicating immense potential for cross-racial coalitions among women of color across issue areas.

Abstract:In 2017, the #MeToo movement garnered international attention when millions of people used it to share experiences of sexual violence via social media. Through an analysis of 570 tweets randomly and purposively sampled within the first 24 hours of the movement, we were interested in answering the following questions: (1) What emotions are present in #MeToo tweets?; and (2) What are the vernacular practices in the #MeToo movement, and how do they convey affect? Through applying Robert Plutchik (2000) structural model of emotion, we were able to identify a wider range of emotions evident in feminist hashtag campaigns than has previously been identified and analyse their varied functions. Furthermore, we show how the difficulty in narrating personal experiences of violence and sharing discernible emotions via this hashtag fed into four vernacular practices, which we argue stimulate affect. Thus, the article contributes to a more nuanced understanding of two often conflated concepts—emotion and affect—and their different roles within #MeToo. The article ultimately shows how a movement such as #MeToo can be highly affective, even when participants disclose very little emotion or detail.

Abstract:Due to multiple minority statuses, transgender women of color are exposed to minority stress through distal (external) stressors from society causing proximal (internal) stress, leading to potentially negative physical and mental health outcomes. Often considered allies to the transgender community, cisgender members of the LGBTQIA+ "community" have historically presented different plights resulting in divergent rights, protections, and societal views. Guided by the minority stress framework, a secondary analysis of individual interviews and focus groups ( n = 20) with transgender women of color was performed. Participants shared experiences of distal and proximal minority stressors when discussing the cisgender LGBTQIA+ "community" and mitigating resilience factors. Four main themes emerged: 1) preference for cisgender presentation; 2) discrimination and exclusion; 3) mistrust; and 4) resilience. This is the first study to demonstrate direct mental and physical health risks for transgender women of color associated with discrimination and exclusion by members of the cisgender LGBTQIA+ "community." Negative experiences resulted in health care avoidance, verbal assault, social exclusion, mistrust of providers, and barriers to transgender-affirming care. Future research must consider minority stress to advance the understanding of LGBTQIA+ within-group marginalization and foster equitable opportunities for transgender women of color and other gender minorities.
