Abstract:The heavy metal contamination of the aquatic ecosystem is still prevalent even after reduction of the external anthropogenic inputs of the metals. The release of labile heavy metals from the sediments into the water is a potential risk, responsible for the contamination of the aquatic system. Herein, samples of sedimentary column cores were collected in Nansi Lake, and the distribution profiles of the labile and soluble metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were obtained by the diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) and the high-resolution dialysis (HR-peeper) technique. Furthermore, the mobility, bioavailability and release risk of the heavy metals were assessed using the results of geochemical sequential extraction, DGT as well as the DGT-induced fluxes in sediments (DIFS) model. The results showed that the profile characteristics of the DGT-labile and soluble heavy metals showed irregular distribution in the sediment cores and Cd, Pb, Zn had an obvious positive correlation with Fe/Mn (p < 0.05). Ni, Cu, and Zn existed primarily in the residual fraction (accounting for 58–76%), while Cd and Pb existed in the reducible fraction (accounting for 50–67%). The Cd and Ni (0.027–0.185) had higher mobility coefficients compared with Pb, Cu, and Zn (0–0.011), and positive diffusive fluxes also proved that Cd and Ni were easy to be released from the sediments. In addition, the R values of five metals (0.18–0.85) ranged between Rdiff to 0.95, indicating that all the metals had partially sustained case from the sediments solid phase. Based on the DIFS model, the five metals had weak mobility from the sediment to pore water, but the release risks in the Nansi Lake should also be of concern, especially for the highly mobile Cd and Ni in the Dushan Lake.

Abstract:This study conducted a comprehensive investigation on the distribution and bioavailability of heavy metals (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in sediments along two typical transects from Yangtze River to the East China Sea continental shelf that spanning large physicochemical gradients. Heavy metals were mainly associated with the fine-grained sediments (enriched with organic matter), exhibiting decreasing trends from nearshore to offshore sites. The turbidity maximum zone showed the highest metal concentrations, which evaluated as polluted for some tested metals (especially Cd) using the geo-accumulation index. Based on the modified BCR procedure, the non-residual fractions of Cu, Zn and Pb were higher within the turbidity maximum zone, and significantly negatively correlated with bottom water salinity. The DGT-labile metals all positively correlated with the acid-soluble metal fraction (especially for Cd, Zn and Cr), and negatively correlated with salinity (except Co). Therefore, our results suggest salinity as the key factor controlling metal bioavailability, which could further modulate metal diffusive fluxes at the sediment-water interface. Considering that DGT probes could readily capture the bioavailable metal fractions, and reflect the impacts of salinity, we suggest DGT technique can be used as a robust predictor for metal bioavailability and mobility in estuary sediments.

Abstract:The European “Community Bureau of Reference” (BCR) sequential extraction procedure, diffusive gradient in thin-films technique (DGT), and physiologically based extraction test were applied to assess metal bioavailability in sediments of Lake Taihu (n = 13). Findings from the three methods showed that Cd was a significant problem in the western lake whereas Cu, Zn, and Ni pollution was most severe in the northern lake. Results from the sequential extraction revealed that more than 50 % of the Cu and Zn were highly mobile and defined within the extractable fraction (AS1 + FM2 + OS3) in the majority of the sediments, in contrast extractable fractions of Ni and Cd were lower than 50 % in most of the sampling sites. Average Cu, Zn, Ni, and Cd bioaccessibilities were <50 % in the gastric phase. Zn and Cd bioaccessibility in the intestinal phase was ∼50 % lower than the gastric phase while bioaccessibilities of Cu and Ni were 47–57 % greater than the gastric phase. Linear regression analysis between DGT and BCR measurements indicated that the extractable fractions (AS1 + FM2 + OS3) in the reducing environment were the main source of DGT uptake, suggesting that DGT is a good in situ evaluation tool for metal bioavailability in sediments.

Abstract:Identifying the mobilization mechanisms and predicting the potential toxicity risk of metals in sediment are essential to contamination remediation in river basins. In this study, a sequential extraction procedure and diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) were employed to investigate the mobilization mechanisms, release characteristics, and potential toxicity of sediment metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb). Acid-soluble and reducible fractions were the dominant geochemical species of Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb in sediments, indicating high mobility potentials for these metals under reducing conditions. In summer, the sediment acted as a source of water-column metals due to mineralization of organic matter and reductive dissolution of iron/manganese oxides in surface sediments, and the formation of metal sulfide precipitates markedly lowered DGT-labile metal concentrations with depth, while localized sulfide oxidation was responsible for fluctuating labile metal concentrations. Stable distribution patterns of labile metals resulted from the weak reducing conditions of sediment in winter, when the sediment shifted to a metal sink. The interstitial water criteria toxicity unit (IWCTU), calculated from DGT measurements, indicated no and low-to-moderate toxic risk of sediments in summer and winter seasons, respectively, and Pb was the major contributor to the predicted toxic effects in the soft interstitial water.

Abstract:Lake Taihu is one of the most contaminated lakes in China. Surface sediment data show that the northern area of the Lake has the worst heavy metals pollution, and high heavy metal concentrations were attributed to discharge of untreated and partially treated industrial waste water from cities to the north of the lake. To study geochemical features and pollution history of heavy metals, total content and chemical fractionations of Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were analyzed for core sediments from western Lake Taihu using the speciation extraction procedure, proposed by the Commission of the European Communities Bureau of Reference (BCR), together with grain size and organic carbon measurements. Results show that sediments are composed of organic-poor clayey-fine silts for Cores MS and DLS, and have similar geochemical features shown by heavy metals. Cu, Fe, Ni, and Zn mainly are associated with the residue fraction, Mn is concentrated in the exchangeable-carbonate and residue fractions, and Pb is concentrated in the Fe–Mn oxide fraction and organic-sulfide fraction. The fractions of Ni, Pb, and Zn bound to Fe–Mn oxide show significant correlations with Mn from the Fe–Mn oxide fraction, and the organic-sulfide fractions of Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn are correlated with TOC. The increase of Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn content and percentage of extractable fractions in the upper layers of the sediments are correlated with anthropogenic input of heavy metals due to rapid industrial development. This coincides with rapid economic development in the Taihu basin since late 1970s. Heavy metals in the surface sediments have certain potential biological toxicity as shown by the higher SEM/AVS ratio.
Potential pollution assessment of labile trace metals in Xixi River estuary sediments in Xiamen, China

Abstract:The release of trace metals caused by industrial effluents and anthropogenic activities has been recorded in the Xixi River estuary, southern China. However, a thorough understanding of the behavior of trace heavy metals in Xixi River sediments is lacking. A total of 12 sediment cores were collected in June and December in the upper estuary section and mouth of the estuary. Here, an in situ high-resolution sampling technique, namely, diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT), was employed to acquire profiles of trace element concentrations and the release of bioavailable metals from sediments in different seasons. A three-step Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction method was used to explore the chemical speciation of trace metals in different seasons and to thereby assess the release potential of trace elements in sediments. The BCR sequential extraction results showed that the trace metals Fe, Mn, Co and Pb were mainly in the residual fraction, which rarely influences living organisms. The total mobile fractions (F1 + F2 + F3) of all trace metals were higher in winter than in summer, suggesting that accumulation occurred from summer to winter. DGT measurements showed that the intensity of sulfate reduction was higher in summer than in winter because of the high temperatures and high organic matter in summer. The intensity of sulfate and Mn(III/IV) reduction increased from the upper estuary section to the lower estuary. Fe(III) reduction decreased in summer but increased slowly in winter. The Pearson correlation results showed that the release of DGT-labile Co in pore water was related to Mn(III/IV) reduction, while the release of DGT-labile Pb was basically not controlled by the Fe-Mn-S redox transition. Abnormally high DGT-labile Pb concentrations were observed at the sampling station (XR3) closest to the estuary in winter, which might have been caused by the high Pb content in the local micro-sediments.
Pollution characteristics of metals and nutrients in different regions of Lake Taihu based on diffusive gradients in thin-films technique

Abstract:Concentrations of metals and nutrients in water and sediments from 7 different regions in Lake Taihu were measured using in situ diffusive gradients in thin-films(DGT)technique. Their regional pollution characteristics were evaluated. Results showed that the concen-trations of metals and nutrients measured by DGT were lower than those by chemical extraction. Simultaneous measurements of multiple ele-ments at ultra-low concentration levels were obtained using DGT. No obvious differences were found in DGT-measured concentrations of metals in water among 7 regions, while large differences were observed in DGT-measured concentrations of metals in sediments among these regions. Iron, As, Zn, Ni and W were heavily polluted in Zhushan Bay, Meiliang Bay and Lake Gong, compared to the central Lake, Lake Xu and East Lake Taihu. Overall, the order of DGT-measured concentrations of metals in sediments was Fe>Mn>Zn>Ni>As>W>Co>Mo>Cu. Unlike metals, the average P concentrations measured by DGT in water were high, with the highest value(83.2μg·L-1)appeared in Lake Gong. As for DGT-measured P in the sediments, Zhushan Bay, Meiliang Bay and Coastal region were heavily polluted, with the highest val-ue of 500μg·L-1 detected. By comparing P concentrations in sediments with those in water, it was found that the sediments in Zhushan Bay, Meiliang Bay and Coastal region probably acted as P sources, which potentially released P to the overlying water.
High resolution spatiotemporal sampling as a tool for comprehensive assessment of zinc mobility and pollution in sediments of a eutrophic lake

Abstract:To assess zinc (Zn) pollution risk from sediments, this study investigated the monthly changes of dissolved Zn and labile Zn in sediment-overlying water profiles in a eutrophic bay (Meiliang Bay) of Lake Taihu (China) using high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) at a 4 mm vertical resolution. In February and March, Mn oxides reduction caused high concentrations of DGT-labile Zn (14 ∼ 235 μg L-1), as evidenced by the significant correlation between DGT-labile Zn and DGT-labile Mn in sediments. In June and July, algal blooms reduced concentrations of dissolved Zn via algal assimilation. From August through October, concentrations of dissolved Zn in overlying water (338 ∼ 1023 μg L-1) exceeded the water quality limit for fisheries in China (100 μg L-1). This was attributed to reductive dissolution of Mn oxides in sediments caused by algal degradation followed by complexation of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which was identified in a simulated algal bloom experiment. In the winter, decreased Zn mobility was mainly attributed to adsorption by Mn oxides. It was concluded that enhanced Zn pollution risk from sediments is worthy of concern especially during algal degradation in eutrophic lakes.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are two typical heavy metals of the Jialing River, and their threat to the river has been considered by the government in recent years. In this study, the diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) technique and sequential extraction were employed together to analyse the remobilization and fraction of Cd and Pb in the sediments. The total concentration of Cd and Pb in four sampling sites both followed the order S3>S4>S2>S1. The sequential extraction results indicated that large amounts of Cd and Pb (over 50% of the total concentration) were bound to the exchangeable and reducible fraction. The DGT results showed that both Cd and Pb presented a significant increasing trend at the bottom of the DGT probe (−10 cm to −12 cm) and that the two metals had a significant positive correlation (r = 0.831, p < 0.01). The apparent diffusive flux result indicated that Cd and Pb had a potential risk of release from surface sediments. A significant correlation was observed between the DGT-labile fraction and sequential extraction at the surface sediments. A further correlation analysis found that the concentration of labile Cd/Pb measured by DGT (CDGT-Cd and CDGT-Pb) had a strong negative correlation with CDGT-Fe, and this process was mainly mitigated by the iron oxides in the sediments. In addition, the correspondence of a "dark area" of AgI gel with corresponding "hotspots" of Chelex gel also proved that the release of Cd and Pb may regulate the dissolved sulfide in the sediments.

Abstract:Heavy metal distribution, bioavailability, and ecological risk in the surface sediment of Taihu Lake were evaluated. Samples were collected from eight representative sites in September 2011 and February 2012. In the surface sediment, average metal contents were in the order of Cr > Zn > Ni > Pb > Cu. Spatially, Zhushan Bay maintained higher Cu, Ni, and Zn contents and Xiaomeikou maintained higher Cr and Pb contents than other sites. Spatial and temporal variation were observed in the bioavailable metals determined by acid-soluble fraction of BCR extraction. The labile metals in Zhushan Bay and Xiaomeikou were quantified by diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and DGT-labile concentrations of Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb, and Cd were in descending order, indicating the inconsistence of labile concentrations of different heavy metals with the total metal contents and that the toxic effect of Cd in sediment should be given attention. The ecological risk assessed by Hakanson potential ecological risk index showed that Zhushan Bay suffered the most serious pollution and should be given special attention. Bioavailability of metals should be taken into account during risk assessment for more accurate estimation.
In situ, high-resolution evidence for the release of heavy metals from lake sediments during ice-covered and free periods

Abstract:Heavy metal dynamics at the sediment-water interface (SWI) has attracted plenty of attention due to their meticulous depiction for metal sorption-release processes. However, little is known about their concentration, migration and release characteristics underneath the ice, especially at the millimeter scale. Here we investigated dynamics of labile As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn by the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique during ice-covered and ice-free periods in the Lake Xingkai basin. The concentrations of metals were relatively high at the SWI and ranged for As: 0.001~13.42 μg L −1 , Cd: 0.01~0.45 μg L −1 , Cu: 0.001~2.75 μg L −1 , Mn: 5.31~2958.29 μg L −1 , Pb: 0.06~1.43 μg L −1 , and Zn: 2.92~112.96 μg L −1 . Particularly, concentration of Mn was extremely higher than other studies, possibly due to diagenetic process. Labile concentrations of heavy metals in January were significantly lower than those in May, suggesting that elevated temperatures lead to the release of heavy metals from the sediment to the overlying water. Based on the Fick's first law, the diffusive fluxes as a source of Mn (413.82-1163.25 mg·m -2 ·d -1 ) and As (3.53 -8.12 mg·m -2 ·d -1 ) indicated that heavy metals were released from sediments to the overlying water. While the diffusive fluxes as a sink of Zn (-1.80-(-2.36) mg·m -2 ·d -1 ) and Pb (-0.02-(-0.46) mg·m -2 ·d -1 ) to sediments. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) revealed that the main factors influencing the heavy metal migration were dissolved oxygen (45.6% of total explanation, P =0.01) in January, and water temperature (52.9%, P =0.006) in May. This study extends theoretical scope for understanding metal migration and release process, and provides valuable suggestions for lake management during the freezing period.

Dynamics and geochemical responses of dissolved metals (Mn and Cu) in a subtropical estuary, China

Abstract:The research delved into the occurrence and dynamics of dissolved metals, specifically manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu), within the Jiulong River Estuary, South China, a medium-sized subtropical estuary. Our findings unveiled a nuanced seasonal and spatial variability of dissolved metals throughout the entire estuarine system. Notably, dissolved Mn concentrations peaked (~ 3.5 μM) in the upper estuary, diminishing sharply along the salinity gradient, with a modest rise in the middle estuary and outer Xiamen Bay. In the upper estuary, heightened concentrations of dissolved Mn occurred in spring due to augmented terrestrial particle inputs, followed by suboxically reductive releases; conversely, concentrations were low in summer, attributed to dilution from increased freshwater discharges and particle scavenging. In contrast, dissolved Cu exhibited differently, with elevated concentrations (29.2-37.5 nM) in the upper and middle estuaries, driven by reductive dissolution of Mn particles and chloride-induced ion exchanges, respectively. Concurrently, heightened inputs of nutrients and metals correlated with elevated phytoplankton productivity (indicated by chlorophyll a) in the upper and outer estuary regions. Our analysis underscored the sensitivity of dissolved metals to environmental parameters, including temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen. The integration of compiled historical data underscored the dynamic nature of dissolved metals, particularly Cu, in response to geochemical processes.The elevated ion levels indicated intensified ion releases from particles and sediments, attributable to increased anthropogenic perturbation and climatic changes (e. g. ocean warming).
Trace Metal Distribution in Phytoplankton- and Macrophyte-Dominated Zones of A Large, Eutrophic Freshwater Lake, Taihu

Abstract:Phytoplankton and macrophytes are major primary producers and play important roles in driving the biogeochemical cycling of trace metals in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we examined the distribution of trace metals in lake water and sediments of different lake zones (phytoplankton- and macrophyte-dominated) in a large, shallow, eutrophic freshwater lake in summer. The labile metal concentrations in lake water were determined with diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique. Metal concentrations in bloom assemblages and macrophyte materials were measured. The results demonstrated that dissolved metal concentrations exhibited dramatically different distribution patterns in different lake zones, whereas metal concentrations in sediments were less influenced. Cadmium (Cd) was highly accumulated by Microcystis (cyanobacteria) bloom assemblages, suggesting that the decay and deposition of Microcystis-bloom detritus may contribute to the enriched Cd in the phytoplankton-dominated lake zone. The dissolved and labile copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations were quite low in macrophyte-dominated zone, which may be attributed to the bioaccumulation of metals by aquatic macrophytes. Concentrations of labile chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) in lake water were less influenced by environmental factors, which could be attributed to the higher affinity of these two metals with the sediment particles. Overall, the results of this study implied that different ecological types might have different influences on the transportation and fate of trace metals in aquatic environments, and different metals were characterized with dissimilar cycling behaviors.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in lake systems has arisen plenty of threats for public health because of its high toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. Whereas heavy metals are inextricably linked with bioavailability in pore water and overlying water. Lake Jiaogang is classified as an important water-carrying lake situated in the northern part of the Anhui Province China. In recent years, water quality in this lake declined due to increasing fishery aquaculture, livestock, and tourism. This study aims to bring insight into the interactions of heavy metal elements across sediment-water interface in Lake Jiaogang. Four representative regions were selected, more than ten heavy metals were chosen to quantify by the Community Bureau of Reference, diffusive gradient in thin-film (DGT), and high-resolution pore water equilibrators. The results showed that most heavy metals corresponded with the reducible fraction, acid-soluble fraction, and oxidizable fraction in the Eastern area (sample 3#) and aquaculture area (sample 4#) were higher than that of emergent plant area (sample 1#), and floating plant area (sample 2#). The average fluxes of heavy metals (except Ni and Zn in sample 3#, F value > 0 pg/cm2/d) in the four sampling sites were observed in the lower reaches (F value < 0 pg/cm2/d). The vertical distribution of heavy metals was extracted by DGT, such as As (exclude 2#), Co, Fe, Mn, and Zn (contain 4#) showed an increased content with increasing depth in the four sampling sites. In the pore and overlying water, concentrations of heavy metals from the sample 3# and 4# were higher than those of sample 1# and 2#. Heavy metal pollution in anthropogenic activity areas was higher than those in areas with ecological vegetation, and risk control in this area should be strengthened.

Spatio-temporal Variations of Sedimentary Metals in a Large Suburban Lake in Southwest China and the Implications for Anthropogenic Processes.

Abstract:Environment quality of suburban and urban lakes receives special attention due to their great impacted by human perturbations and important roles in ecosystem services. Herein, the spatio-temporal variations of 10 metal and metalloid elements in 13 sediment cores from a large suburban lake (Dianchi) were studied to explore the changes in sedimentary environment and pollution and their associations with human activities since the last century. Concentrations of each element were largely varied at spatial scales, but showed similar vertical trends among the profiles, suggesting comparable changes in sedimentary processes in each lake region. Cluster analysis showed two groups of elements: group I includes Al, Ti, Cu, Cr and Ni, and group II includes As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn. Temporally, concentrations of all elements were generally constant until the 1950s. Thereafter, group I elements along with the clay percentage started to decrease, indicating accelerated input of coarser soils due to strengthening human perturbation and changing land use. However, group II elements showed increasing values of concentrations, particularly the enrichment factors (EF = 1.0-10.8), which peaked between mid-1990s and 2000, indicating continued pollutants input with watershed economic development. With the implementation of environment management measures, pollution was initially restrained or reduced in recent decades as indicated by the stable EFs and sedimentary fluxes of Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn and decreasing values of As. Spatially, the stocks of anthropogenic As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn were higher in the northern while lower in the southern lake area. This spatial difference was mainly due to the large input of industrial and domestic wastewaters in the northern compared to the area in the southern that receives runoff from agricultural and forested land. Overall, the spatio-temporal patterns in accumulation of metal and metalloid elements in the lake reliably reflected the impacts of watershed human activities. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Geochemical behaviors of trace metals in the sediment profiles are crucial for predicting the associated environmental risks in aquatic ecosystems. However, the comprehensive transport of trace metals under both equilibrium and dynamic conditions is still unclear under the changing hydrological regime. Here, the equilibrium partitioning behaviors and remobilization of five trace metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb) in sedimentary profiles within the tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir were explored by the partitioning coefficient (Kd), diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT), and DGT induced flux in sediments (DIFS) model. According to the Kd values, As posed the highest migration ability among the trace metals in the sediment profiles under equilibrium circumstances. Similarly, the dynamic processes of trace metals simulated by the DIFS model also suggested that As displayed the highest desorption rate despite having the lowest labile pool size. Moreover, all trace metals were classified as the “partially sustained” case, while the supply abilities of As and other trace metals were limited by the diffusion and the desorption kinetics, respectively. In addition, DGT-labile trace metals showed a diffusion trend from the sediment to the water column (except for Zn) at the sediment-water interface, indicating potential risks to water quality. Specifically, the equilibrium partitioning behaviors revealed the potential labile pool of trace metals in the solid phase, and the dynamic resupply process between the solid phase and porewater remained undetermined. In comparison, although DGT simulated the kinetic process of trace metals in the sediments, the labile pool of the trace metals could not be obtained. This study provided a holistic insight into the complementary trace metal behaviors under both equilibrium and dynamic conditions in the sediment and was beneficial to the water quality protection and internal pollution remediation in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:The ice cover in winter as a physical barrier and duration would profoundly impact on changes in endogenous metal loading, migration, and transformation. Although a gradual reduction in duration and occurrence of lake ice cover in boreal lake ecosystems has been confirmed, little attention to the ice-covered period is received compared to open water studies. In this study, novel-developed diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT, ZrO-Chelex) probes were deployed to obtain the in-situ and high-resolution information on metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, Cd, Cr, and As) at the sediment-water interface (SWI) in a seasonal ice-covered lake, Chagan Lake. In addition, “source-sink” characteristics of each metal related to their endogenous release were determined based on Fick’s first law. Concentrations of labile metals at the SWI demonstrated significant spatial heterogeneity, peaking exactly below the SWI. Compared with other similar studies, concentrations of Pb (0.55 μg/L), Cr (0.58 μg/L), and As (2.4 μg/L) were a little higher even under-ice than that in other freshwater rivers and lakes, indicating potential pollution due to the agricultural intensification and petroleum extraction. The apparent diffusive fluxes suggested that sediments acted as a sink for Pb (−0.01 mg m–2 day–1), Cr (−2.37 mg m–2 day–1), and Cd (−0.1 mg m–2 day–1), diffusing from the overlying water into the sediment, while Cu (0.12 mg m–2 day–1), Zn (0.75 mg m–2 day–1), Mn (15.89 mg m–2 day–1), and As (2.12 mg m–2 day–1) as a source from sediments into the overlying water. Dissolved oxygen was the principal factor (79.5%, P = 0.032), determining the variation of the available metals at the SWI. As the urgent need for research focused on under-ice ecosystem dynamics, this study addressed the previously unknown behavior of the labile metals at the SWI and provided a unique perspective for the lake management during the ice-cover periods when external nutrient input was cut off.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown canavanine to be a potent antagonist of arginine in Neurospora (1) and in some bacteria, but not in others (2, 3). Streptococcus faecaks belongs to the resistant group of bacteria and has been shown to degrade canavanine in two distinct ways: by reductive cleavage to guanidine and homoserine (4) and, to a lesser extent, by hydrolytic cleavage to ammonia and 0-ureidohomoserine (5). In an extension of these studies, a pseudomonad capable of utilizing canavanine as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen was isolated from soil by the enrichment culture technique. The initial attack on canavanine by this organism was found to consist in a hitherto undescribed cleavage of this amino acid to yield hydroxyguanidine and homoserine. The present paper deals with the demonstration of this reaction.
Spatial distribution and source identification for heavy metals in surface sediments of East Dongting Lake, China

Abstract:Dongting Lake is one of the most important inland freshwater lakes in China. To investigate the spatial distribution and seasonal variation characteristics of heavy metals (Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in the lake, 53 surface sediment samples were collected in the East Dongting Lake (ED Lake) in the wet and dry seasons. Results show Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb contents were 1.7 (1.9), 1.8 (2.0), 2.9 (3.0), 1.9 (1.9), 11.7 (13.1), and 2.0 (2.2)-fold of their geochemical soil background values of Hunan province (China) in the wet (dry) season. Spatial and seasonal heterogeneity could be found in the distribution of Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, and Pb in the surface sediments. The enrichment factor (EF) suggested that Cd has reached severe enrichment in the sediment. The result of the geo-accumulation index ( I geo ) indicated that Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, and Pb were at levels corresponding to low contamination, and moderately to highly polluted with Cd. Multivariate statistical analysis including pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis was used for the identification of potential sources of the heavy metals in the sediments. The results showed that Cu, Zn, and Pb from the sediments of the East Dongting Lake in the wet and dry seasons were possibly anthropogenic sources, such as emissions from mining and smelting while Al, Fe, and Cr are attributed for natural sources. Cd enrichment in the sediments is influenced by both natural factors, and human activities in local areas.

Abstract:Sequential core sediments from northwestern Taihu Lake in China were analyzed for grain size, organic carbon and heavy metal content. The sediments are composed of organic-poor clayey-fine silts. The chemical speciations of Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were also analyzed using the BCR sequential extraction procedure. Cu, Fe, Ni, and Zn are mainly associated with the residue fraction; Mn is concentrated mainly in exchangeable/carbonate fraction and residue fraction; and Pb mainly in Fe/Mn oxide fraction and organic/sulfide fraction. The exchangeable/carbonate fractions of Cu, Fe, Ni, Zn and Pb are lower. The fractions of Ni, Pb and Zn bound to the Fe/Mn oxide have significant correlations with reducible Mn; the organic/sulfide fractions of Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn have significant correlations with TOC. The extractable fractions of Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn are high at the top 4 cm of the core sediments as compared to those in the deeper layers, showing the anthropogenic input of heavy metals is due to rapid industrial development. The heavy metal pollution history of the sediments has been recorded since the late 1970s, determined by the result of137Cs dating.
