Abstract:The fabrication of an efficient and low-cost photocathode still remains a big challenge. We herein report a Ag/ CuxO@rGO/Mo photocathode for CO2 conversion. A unique wavelength-dependent performance is found to enhance the formation of the key intermediate groups by exciting photothermal local surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) using the lights with wavelengths ranging from 550 to 600 nm. CO, H2 and CH4 can be stably produced with dual photoelectrodes using a neutral solution. An unbiased solar-to-gaseous-carbon-fuel efficiency (SGCF) of 0.51 % has been achieved, which sets a record for carbon gas fuel production with binary photoelectrodes. In addition, the CO/H2 ratio could be tuned in the range from 0.65 to 1.84, which makes it possible to fine tune the syngas production. The excellent PEC CO2 reduction capability achieved by the new wavelengthdependent catalytic route may shine some lights for the future design and development of the next-generation PEC materials and devices.

In Situ Cofactor Regeneration Enables Selective CO2 Reduction in a Stable and Efficient Enzymatic Photoelectrochemical Cell

Abstract:Mimicking natural photosynthesis by direct photoelectrochemical (PEC) reduction of CO2 to chemicals and fuels requires complex cell assemblies with limitations in selectivity, efficiency, cost, and stability. Here, we present a breakthrough cathode utilizing an oxygen tolerant formate dehydrogenase enzyme derived from clostridium carboxidivorans and coupled to a novel and efficient in situ nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+/NADH) regeneration mechanism through interfacial electrochemistry on g-C3N4 films. We demonstrate stable (20 h) aerobic PEC CO2-to-formate reduction at close to 100 % faradaic efficiency and unit selectivity in a bio-hybrid PEC cell of minimal engineering with optimized Ta3N5 nanotube photoanode powered by simulated sunlight with a solar to fuel efficiency of 0.063 %, approaching that of natural photosynthesis.

Abstract:The consumption of fossil fuels releases large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, causing a serious greenhouse effect. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) reduction of CO2 to chemical fuels is an effective way to alleviate the current energy and environmental crisis. However, it is still difficult to rationally design efficient PEC CO2 reduction photocathodes. Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is a promising photocathode material, but its surface is susceptible to the accumulation of photogenerated electrons leading to corrosion and activity reduction, and is accompanied by hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), both of which lead to the overall low conversion efficiency of CO2 reduction by Cu2O. In this study, the PEC CO2 conversion efficiency was improved by the synergistic effect of the C electron transport layer to accelerate the electron transfer to alleviate the Cu2O corrosion problem and the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hydrophobic layer to inhibit the HER. The test showed that the CO yield of Cu2O/C/PTFE at the optimum potential (‐0.7 V vs. RHE) was 54.6μmol cm‐2 h‐1, which was 3.2 times higher than that of pure Cu2O. This study provides a facile strategy for constructing an efficient photocathode with great potential for CO reduction.

Highly Efficient Photoelectrochemical Reduction of CO2 at Low Applied Voltage Using 3D Co-Pi/BiVO4/SnO2 Nanosheet Array Photoanodes.

Abstract:To solve the increasing level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) based photoanode for photoelectrochemical water oxidation has been considered as a promising candidate of power supply for CO2 reduction because of its low price and relatively narrow bandgap. Nevertheless, the PEC capability of BiVO4 photoelectrode is restricted by the short carrier diffusion length, undesirable electron transport ability, and slow oxygen evolution rate. To conquer these shortages, we design and fabricate a novel ternary hybrid composite of 3D Co-Pi/BiVO4/SnO2 nanosheet array photoanode. Benefiting from the high light harvesting ability of nanosheet arrays, effective separation of electron-hole pairs for BiVO4/SnO2 heterojunction and fast water oxidation rate of Co-Pi, the hybrid system behaved a 20.2-times enhancement in photocurrent and a significant cathodic shift about the onset potential of water oxidation reaction compared with single BiVO4. Coupled with Au nanoparticle cathode, the PEC cell exhibited a 90.0% faradaic efficiency for CO2 reduction under a small applied voltage of 1.10 V and saved more than 50% of electric-energy compared to the general electrochemical (EC) cell. We believe that the fabricated 3D Co-Pi/BiVO4/SnO2 NSAs with remarkably enhanced PEC performance could provide clean power for modern society via a reduction reaction on pollution gases.

Abstract:Renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy, are key to our efforts to decarbonize. This study investigates the photoelectrochemical (PEC) behavior of nanoporous silicon (NPSi) and its Ni-coated hybrid system. The methods involve the application of a Ni coating to NPSi, a process aimed at augmenting catalytic activity, light absorption, and carrier transport. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphological changes on NPSi surfaces due to the Ni coating. Results demonstrate that the Ni coating creates unique structures on NPSi surfaces, with peak PEC performance observed at 15 min of coating time and 60 °C. These conditions were found to promote electron-hole pair separation and uniform Ni coverage. A continuous 50-min white light illumination experiment confirmed stable PEC fluctuations, showing the interplay of NPSi’s characteristics and Ni’s catalytic effect. This study provides practical guidance for the design of efficient water-splitting catalysts, contributing to the broader field of renewable energy conversion.

Abstract:Abstract Photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction flow cells are promising devices to meet the requirements to produce solar fuels at the industrial scale. Photoelectrodes with wide bandgaps do not allow for efficient CO 2 reduction at high current densities, while the integration of opaque photoelectrodes with narrow bandgaps in flow cell configurations still remains a challenge. This paper describes the design and fabrication of a back-illuminated Si photoanode promoted PEC flow cell for CO 2 reduction reaction. The illumination area and catalytic sites of the Si photoelectrode are decoupled, owing to the effective passivation of defect states that allows for the long minority carrier diffusion length, that surpasses the thickness of the Si substrate. Hence, a solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency of CO of 2.42% and a Faradaic efficiency of 90% using Ag catalysts are achieved. For CO 2 to C 2+ products, the Faradaic efficiency of 53% and solar-to-fuel of 0.29% are achieved using Cu catalyst in flow cell.

Highly Efficient NiFe Nanoparticle Decorated Si Photoanode for Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Abstract:n-Si is a narrow band gap semiconductor that has been demonstrated as an excellent photoabsorber material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Depositing a thin layer of Ni film on n-Si can form a Schottky junction at the interface, which offers a simple and useful route toward light-driven water oxidation. However, the relatively low catalytic activity of the Ni layer and the presence of interface states limit the application of this structure. Herein, we prepared a high-performance NiFe nanoparticle decorated Si photoanode for efficient solar-driven water oxidation to O-2. NiFe nanoparticles were dispersed on a Si substrate surface homogeneously to form an inhomogeneous metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) junction, which increased the photovoltage of the photoanode. In addition, the oxide/oxyhydroxide layer on the deposited NiFe layer formed during the evaporation deposition acted as a highly efficient electrocatalyst, which also contributed to the high PEC performance of the photoanode. The photoanode covered with a 2 nm NiFe film exhibited the best PEC performance with a low onset potential of 1.09 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) (the potential required to reach the photocurrent of 1 mA/cm(2)), a high photocurrent of 25.2 mA/cm(2) at 1.23 V versus RHE, and a stable output over 50 h under AM 1.5G illumination due to the high-performance inhomogeneous MIS junction and a thick oxide/oxyhydroxide catalytic shell formed on the NiFe nanoparticle via an aging process.

Abstract:Photo‐electrochemical (PEC) carbon dioxide reduction to chemicals or fuels has been regarded as an attractive strategy that can close the anthropogenic carbon cycle. However, identifying a PEC system capable of driving efficient and durable CO2 conversion remains a critical challenge. Herein, the fabrication of a sandwich‐like organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite‐based photocathode with carbon encapsulation for PEC CO2 reduction is reported. The carbon encapsulation not only affords protection to the perovskite, but also allows for efficient conductance of photogenerated electrons. When decorated with a cobalt phthalocyanine molecular catalyst, the photocathode shows an onset potential at 0.58 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a high photocurrent density of −15.5 mA cm−2 at −0.11 V versus RHE in CO2‐saturated 0.5 m KHCO3 under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm−2), which represents state‐of‐the‐art performance in this field. Moreover, the photocathode remains stable during a continuous reaction that lasted for 25 h. Unbiased PEC CO2 reduction is further realized by integrating the photocathode with an amorphous Si photoanode in tandem, delivering a solar‐to‐CO energy conversion efficiency of 3.34% and a total solar‐to‐fuel energy conversion efficiency of 3.85%.

Abstract:A photoelectrochemical (PEC) CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) in an aqueous medium is among the most promising methods to produce renewable fuels with the sun and water as the energy and electron source. But a high negative bias remains a prerequisite to achieve an appreciable conversion at present due to the large overpotential of CO2 reduction. This communication describes a PEC CRR with low onset potential on an amorphous silicon (a-Si) photocathode decorated with grain-boundary-rich gold catalysts. Syngas, with high throughput and desirable CO/H2 ratios such as 1 : 2 and 1 : 1, was produced in a wide PEC range from the equilibrium potential E-0(CO2/CO) of -0.1 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (V-RHE) to as positive as 0.4 V-RHE, leading to a half-cell conversion efficiency of 0.42%. This performance represents the highest half-cell efficiency and lowest onset potential for CO2 reduction ever reported among aqueous PEC cathodes under 1 sun illumination. The a-Si/TiO2/Au photocathodes exhibit excellent stability in a wide potential range, with a high CO mass activity up to 180 ampere per gram of gold at -0.1 V-RHE. Controlling the grain boundary provides powerful potential to adjust the product selectivity in PEC CO2 reduction.
Efficient photoelectrochemical conversion of CO2 to syngas by photocathode engineering

Abstract:The synthesis of renewable chemical fuels from CO2 and H2O via photoelectrochemical (PEC) route reprensents a promising room-temperature approach for transforming greenhouse gas into value-added chemicals (e.g., syngas), but to date it has been hampered by the lack of efficient photocathode for CO2 reduction. Herein, we report efficient PEC CO2 reduction into syngas by photocathode engineering. The photocathode is consisting of a planar p-n Si junction for strong light harvesting, GaN nanowires for efficient electron extraction and transfer, and Au/TiO2 for rapid electrocatalytic syngas production. The photocathode yields a record-high solar energy conversion efficiency of 2.3%. Furthermore, desirable syngas compositions with CO/H2 ratios such as 1:2 and 1:1 can be produced by simply varying the size of Au nanoparticle. Theoretical calculations reveal that the active sites for CO and H2 generation are the facet and undercoordinated sites of Au particles, respectively.

Nanoporous 6H-SiC Photoanodes with a Conformal Coating of Ni–FeOOH Nanorods for Zero-Onset-Potential Water Splitting

Abstract:A surface-nanostructured semiconductor photoelectrode is highly desirable for photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar-to-fuel production due to its large active surface area, efficient light absorption, and significantly reduced distance for charge transport. Here, we demonstrate a facile approach to fabricate a nanoporous 6H-silicon carbide (6H-SiC) photoanode with a conformal coating of Ni–FeOOH nanorods as a water oxidation cocatalyst. Such a nanoporous photoanode shows significantly enhanced photocurrent density (jph) with a zero-onset potential. A dendritic porous 6H-SiC with densely arranged holes with a size of ∼40 nm on the surface is fabricated by an anodization method, followed by the hydrothermal deposition of FeOOH nanorods and electrodeposition of NiOOH. Under an illumination of AM1.5G 100 mW/cm2, the Ni–FeOOH-coated nanoporous 6H-SiC photoanode exhibits an onset potential of 0 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE) and a high jph of 0.684 mA/cm2 at 1 VRHE, which is 342 times higher than that of the Ni–FeOOH-coated planar 6H-SiC photoanode. Moreover, the nanoporous photoanode shows a maximum applied-bias-photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of 0.58% at a very low bias of 0.36 VRHE, distinctly outperforming the planar counterpart. The impedance measurements demonstrate that the nanoporous photoanode possesses a significantly reduced charge-transfer resistance, which explains the dramatically enhanced PEC water-splitting performance. The reported approach here can be widely used to fabricate other nanoporous semiconductors for solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Silicon is a promising photoelectrochemical (PEC) material owing to its earth abundance, high carrier mobility and narrow bandgap. However, a bare Si photoelectrode is prone to photocorrosion and its photovoltage is affected by surface states on the electrode in PEC measurements. In the present work, a simple and inexpensive method for the construction of a Si/graphene heterojunction is presented. The high barrier at the solid/solid junction results in an open-circuit voltage of 490mV, making it an excellent heterojunction light absorber to generate a substantial photovoltage for PEC water oxidation. A TiO2 thin layer deposited on the Si/graphene structure is effective to protect the heterojunction from the electrolyte while favoring the interfacial charge transport from the buried junction. The introduction of a FeNiCoOx co-catalyst thin film onto the TiO2 protected heterojunction yields a high photocurrent density of approximate to 19 mA cm(-2) at an applied potential of 1.5 V vs. RHE in 1.0 M NaOH solution under one sun simulated solar illumination. In contrast to the unprotected Si/graphene electrode, the activity of the TiO2 protected photoanode is sustained for several hours in an alkaline electrolyte. This work clearly reveals the important role of graphene in the performance improvement of the Si-based photoanodes and sheds light on the introduction of novel materials onto silicon-based electrodes to achieve higher photovoltages for efficient PEC reactions.
Surface reconstructed Ni0.95Pt0.05/Si photoelectrodes for bias‐free hydrogen evolution coupled with 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation

Abstract:Coupling hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with biomass valorization using a photoelectrochemical (PEC) system presents a promising approach for effectively converting solar energy to chemical energy.. A crucial biomass valorization reaction is the production of value‐added 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) via 5‐Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation reaction (HMFOR). To achieve efficient FDCA production, we demonstrate an efficient photoanode strategy that combines metal silicidation, dopant segregation, and surface reconstruction to create a bimetallic silicide Ni0.95Pt0.05Si/n‐Si photoanode. The oxide‐free Ni0.95Pt0.05Si/n‐Si interface prepared by the metal‐silicidation process ensures efficient interfacial charge transport, while dopant segregation enhances the Schottky barrier height and photovoltage, and surface reconstruction dramatically improves the catalytic activity of the photoanode surface. The as‐prepared Ni0.95Pt0.05Si/n‐Si photoanode exhibited excellent PEC performance for HMFOR with high conversion of HMF (97.2%) and yield of FDCA (80.3%) under illumination. Furthermore, by integrating a surface reconstructed Ni0.95Pt0.05Si/n‐Si photoanode with a Ni0.95Pt0.05Si/p‐Si photocathode, a dual‐photoelectrode system was constructed capable of simultaneous production of FDCA and H2, which achieves high photocurrent density of 5 mA cm‐2 at zero bias under illumination. This study offers an auspicious prospect for high cost‐effectiveness conversion from solar energy to industrial monomers.

Achieving 12.0% Solar-to-Hydrogen Efficiency with a Trimetallic-Layer-Protected and Catalyzed Silicon Photoanode Coupled with an Inexpensive Silicon Solar Cell

Abstract:n-Type silicon (n-Si), with surface easily oxidized and passivated in an aqueous electrolyte, has suffered from sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, a trimetallic Ni0.9Fe0.05Co0.05 protective layer is successfully electrodeposited on a p+n-Si substrate by underpotential deposition. The prepared Ni0.9Fe0.05Co0.05/p+n-Si photoanode exhibits excellent stability and activity for PEC water oxidation, with a low onset potential of 0.938 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a remarkable photocurrent density of about 33.1 mA∙cm−2 at 1.23 V versus RHE, which significantly outperforms the Ni/p+n-Si photoanode as a reference. It is revealed that the incorporation of Fe into the Ni layer creates a large band bending at the Ni0.9Fe0.05Co0.05/p+n-Si interface, promoting interfacial charge separation. Moreover, the incorporation of Co produces abundant Ni3+ and oxygen vacancies (Ov) that act as active sites to accelerate the OER kinetics, synergistically contributing to a major enhancement of PEC water oxidation activity. Encouragingly, by connecting the Ni0.9Fe0.05Co0.05/p+n-Si photoanode to an inexpensive Si solar cell, an integrated photovoltaic/PEC (PV/PEC) device achieved a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of as high as 12.0% without bias. This work provides a facile approach to design efficient and stable n-Si-based photoanodes with a deep understanding of the structure–activity relationship, which exhibits great potential for the integration of low-cost PV/PEC devices for unassisted solar-driven water splitting.
Spontaneous Solar Syngas Production from CO2 Driven by Energetically Favorable Wastewater Microbial Anodes

Abstract:The photoelectrochemical (PEC) reduction of CO 2 to syngas is an attractive strategy for solar-to-fuel conversion. However, the high overpotential, inadequate selectivity, and high cost demand for alternative solutions. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid microbial photoelectrochemical (MPEC) system that contains a microbial anode capable of oxidizing waste organics in wastewater and reducing the oxidation potential by 1.1 V compared with abiotic water oxidation using a PEC anode. Moreover, the MPEC employs a power management circuit (PMC) to enable parallel low-energy-producing reactions operated in the same solution medium to conquer high-overpotential reactions. The nanowire silicon photocathode integrated with a selective single-atom nickel catalyst (Si NW/Ni SA) achieved up to ∼80% faradic efficiency for CO generation with a highly tunable CO:H 2 generation ratio (0.1 to 6.8). When the bioanode was coupled with the Si NW/Ni SA, up to 1.1 mA cm −2 of spontaneous photocurrent density was obtained for high-rate syngas generation.

Abstract:The energy crisis and global warming become severe issues. Solar-driven CO2 reduction provides a promising route to confront the predicaments, which has received much attention. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) process, which can integrate the merits of both photocatalysis and electrocatalysis, boosts splendid talent for CO2 reduction with high efficiency and excellent selectivity. Recent several decades have witnessed the overwhelming development of PEC CO2 reduction. In this review, we attempt to systematically summarize the recent advanced design for PEC CO2 reduction. On account of basic principles and evaluation parameters, we firstly highlight the subtle construction for photocathodes to enhance the efficiency and selectivity of CO2 reduction, which includes the strategies for improving light utilization, supplying catalytic active sites and steering reaction pathway. Furthermore, diversiform novel PEC setups are also outlined. These exploited setups endow a bright window to surmount the intrinsic disadvantages of photocathode, showing promising potentials for future applications. Finally, we underline the challenges and key factors for the further development of PEC CO2 reduction that would enable more efficient designs for setups and deepen systematic understanding for mechanisms.
Nanocarbon-Enhanced 2D Photoelectrodes: A New Paradigm in Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Abstract Solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting systems are highly promising for converting solar energy into clean and sustainable chemical energy. In such PEC systems, an integrated photoelectrode incorporates a light harvester for absorbing solar energy, an interlayer for transporting photogenerated charge carriers, and a co-catalyst for triggering redox reactions. Thus, understanding the correlations between the intrinsic structural properties and functions of the photoelectrodes is crucial. Here we critically examine various 2D layered photoanodes/photocathodes, including graphitic carbon nitrides, transition metal dichalcogenides, layered double hydroxides, layered bismuth oxyhalide nanosheets, and MXenes, combined with advanced nanocarbons (carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and graphdiyne) as co-catalysts to assemble integrated photoelectrodes for oxygen evolution/hydrogen evolution reactions. The fundamental principles of PEC water splitting and physicochemical properties of photoelectrodes and the associated catalytic reactions are analyzed. Elaborate strategies for the assembly of 2D photoelectrodes with nanocarbons to enhance the PEC performances are introduced. The mechanisms of interplay of 2D photoelectrodes and nanocarbon co-catalysts are further discussed. The challenges and opportunities in the field are identified to guide future research for maximizing the conversion efficiency of PEC water splitting.

Abstract:Solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has attracted a great deal of attention recently. Silicon (Si) is an ideal light absorber for solar energy conversion. However, the poor stability and inefficient surface catalysis of Si photocathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have remained key challenges. Alternatively, MoS2 has been reported to exhibit excellent catalysis performance if sufficient active sites for the HER are available. Here, ultrathin MoS2 nanoflakes are directly synthesized to coat arrays of Ag-core Si-shell nanospheres (Ag@Si NSs) by using chemical vapor deposition. Due to the high surface area ratio and large curvature of these NSs, the as-grown MoS2 nanoflakes can accommodate more active sites. In addition, the high-quality coating of MoS2 nanoflakes on the Ag@Si NSs protects the photocathode from damage during the PEC reaction. An photocurrent density of 33.3 mA cm-2 at a voltage of -0.4 V is obtained versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. The as-prepared nanostructure as a hydrogen photocathode is evidenced to have high stability over 12 h PEC performance. This work opens up opportunities for composite photocathodes with high activity and stability using cheap and stable co-catalysts.
Efficient CO2 conversion to formic acid in a novel microbial photoelectrochemical cell using a visible-light responsive Co3O4 nanorod-arrayed photocathode

Abstract:A microbial photoelectrochemical cell (MPEC) is a self-biased, solar-driven device combining bioenergy with solar energy to produce sustainable electricity and chemicals. Here, an MPEC with a p-type Co3O4 nanorod-arrayed photocathode and bio-anode was constructed that matched well the redox potentials of anode microorganisms with the band gap of the Co3O4. The yield of formic acid produced by this MPEC under visible light irradiation with an external resistance of 300 Ω was 239 ± 10 μmol in 10 h, which was 1.8 times that produced by a bare Co3O4 photocathode under visible light, and 4.9 times that produced by the MPEC operated in dark. The maximum power density was 331 ± 4 mW m–2 under visible light, compared to 175 ± 25 mW m–2 in the dark. This study of MPEC with the synergistic effect of light energy and bioenergy opens up new opportunities for applications in environmental treatment of wastewaters and chemicals production.
