Abstract:A universal dynamical crossover temperature, Tcr, in glassy liquids, associated with the {\alpha}-\b{eta} bifurcation temperature, TB, has been observed in dielectric spectroscopy and other experiments. Tcr lies significantly above the glass transition temperature. Here, we introduce a new class of glass-forming liquids, binary mixtures of prolate and oblate ellipsoids. This model system exhibits sharp thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies, such as the specific heat jump during heating and a sharp variation in the thermal expansion coefficient around a temperature identified as the glass transition temperature, Tg. The same temperature is obtained from the fit of the calculated relaxation times to the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) form. As the temperature is lowered, the single peak rotational relaxation spectrum splits into two at a temperature TB significantly above the estimated Tg. Similar bifurcation is also observed in the distribution of short-to-intermediate time translational diffusion. Interrogation of the two peaks reveals a lower extent of dynamic heterogeneity in the population of the faster mode. We observe an unexpected appearance of a sharp peak in the product of rotational relaxation time {\tau}2 and diffusion constant D at a temperature Tcr, close to TB, but above the glass transition temperature. Additionally, we coarse-grain the system into cubic boxes, each containing, on average, ~62 particles, to study the average dynamical properties. Clear evidence of large-scale sudden changes in the diffusion coefficient and rotational correlation time signals first-order transitions between low and high-mobility domains.

Abstract:To support a new interpretation of the origin of the dynamic heterogeneity observed pervasively in fragile liquids as they approach their glass transition temperatures Tg, we demonstrate that the introduction of ~2 nm structural inhomogeneities into a homogeneous glassformer leads to a decoupling of diffusion from viscosity similar to that observed during the cooling of orthoterphenyl OTP below TA, where Arrhenius behavior is lost. Further, the decoupling effect grows stronger as temperature decreases (and viscosity increases). The liquid is cresol and the ~2nm inhomogeneities are cresol-soluble asymmetric derivatized tetrasiloxy-based (POSS) molecules. The decoupling is the phenomenon predicted by Onsager in discussing the approach to a liquid-liquid phase separation with decreasing temperature. In the present case the observations support the notion of a polyamorphic transition in fragile liquids that is hidden below the glass transition. A similar decoupling can be expected as a globular protein is dissolved in dilute aqueous solutions or in protic ionic liquids.

Abstract:Glycerol acts as a natural cryoprotectant by depressing the temperature of ice nucleation and slowing down the dynamics of water mixtures. In this work we characterize dynamics -- diffusion, viscosity, and hydrogen-bond dynamics -- as well as density anomaly and structure of water mixtures with 1\% to 50\% w/w glycerol at low temperatures via molecular dynamics simulations using all-atom and coarse-grained models. Simulations reveal distinct violations of the Stokes-Einsten relation in the low temperature regime for water and glycerol. Deviations are positive for water at all concentrations, and positive for glycerol in very dilute solutions but turning negative in concentrated ones. The all-atom and coarse-grained models reveal an unexpected crossover in the dynamics of the 1% and 10 % w/w glycerol at the lowest simulated temperatures. This crossover manifests in the diffusion coefficients of water and glycerol, as well as in the viscosity and lifetime of hydrogen-bonds in water. We interpret that the crossover originates on the opposing dependence with glycerol concentration of the two factors controlling the solution's slow-down: the increase in tetrahedrally coordinated water and the dynamics and clustering of the glycerol molecules. We anticipate that this dynamic crossover will also occur for solution of water with other polyols.

Orientational dynamics in supercooled glycerol computed from MD simulations: self and cross contributions

Abstract:The orientational dynamics of supercooled glycerol using molecular dynamics simulations for temperatures ranging from 323 K to 253 K, is probed through correlation functions of first and second ranks of Legendre polynomials, pertaining respectively to dielectric spectroscopy (DS) and depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS). The self, cross, and total correlation functions are compared with relevant experimental data. The computations reveal the low sensitivity of DDLS to cross-correlations, in agreement with what is found in experimental work, and strengthen the idea of directly comparing DS and DDLS data to evaluate the effect of cross-correlations in polar liquids. The analysis of the net static cross-correlations and their spatial decomposition shows that, although cross-correlations extend over nanometric distances, their net magnitude originates, in the case of glycerol, from the first shell of neighbouring molecules. Accessing the angular dependence of the static correlation allows us to get a microscopic understanding of why the rank-1 correlation function is more sensitive to cross-correlation than its rank-2 counterpart.

Abstract:In the present work, we employ broadband dielectric spectroscopy to study the molecular dynamics of the prototypical glass former glycerol confined in two microporous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8 and ZIF-11) with well-defined pore diameters of 1.16 and 1.46 nm, respectively. The spectra reveal information on the modified alpha relaxation of the confined supercooled liquid, whose temperature dependence exhibits clear deviations from the typical super-Arrhenius temperature dependence of the bulk material, depending on temperature and pore size. This allows assigning well-defined cooperativity length scales of molecular motion to certain temperatures above the glass transition. We relate these and previous results on glycerol confined in other host systems to the temperature-dependent length scale deduced from nonlinear dielectric measurements. The combined experimental data can be consistently described by a critical divergence of this correlation length as expected within theoretical approaches assuming that the glass transition is due to an underlying phase transition.

A structural approach to relaxation in glassy liquids

Abstract:When a liquid freezes, a change in the local atomic structure marks the transition to the crystal. When a liquid is cooled to form a glass, however, no noticeable structural change marks the glass transition. Indeed, characteristic features of glassy dynamics that appear below an onset temperature, T_0, are qualitatively captured by mean field theory, which assumes uniform local structure at all temperatures. Even studies of more realistic systems have found only weak correlations between structure and dynamics. This raises the question: is structure important to glassy dynamics in three dimensions? Here, we answer this question affirmatively by using machine learning methods to identify a new field, that we call softness, which characterizes local structure and is strongly correlated with rearrangement dynamics. We find that the onset of glassy dynamics at T_0 is marked by the onset of correlations between softness (i.e. structure) and dynamics. Moreover, we use softness to construct a simple model of slow glassy relaxation that is in excellent agreement with our simulation results, showing that a theory of the evolution of softness in time would constitute a theory of glassy dynamics.

Abstract:At low temperatures, proteins exist in a glassy state, a state that has no conformational flexibility and shows no biological functions. In a hydrated protein, at temperatures ≳220 K, this flexibility is restored, and the protein is able to sample more conformational substates, thus becoming biologically functional. This “dynamical” transition of protein is believed to be triggered by its strong coupling with the hydration water, which also shows a similar dynamic transition. Here we demonstrate experimentally that this sudden switch in dynamic behavior of the hydration water on lysozyme occurs precisely at 220 K and can be described as a fragile-to-strong dynamic crossover. At the fragile-to-strong dynamic crossover, the structure of hydration water makes a transition from predominantly high-density (more fluid state) to low-density (less fluid state) forms derived from the existence of the second critical point at an elevated pressure.

Abstract:Family of compounds CBr$_n$Cl$_{4-n}$ has been proven helpful in unraveling microscopic mechanisms responsible of glassy behavior. Some of the family members show translational ordered phases with minimal disorder which appears to reveal glassy features, thus deserving special attention in the search for universal glass anomalies. In this work, we studied CBrCl$_3$ dynamics by performing extensive molecular dynamics simulations. Molecules of this compound perform reorientational discrete jumps, where the atoms exchange equivalent positions among each other revealing a cage-orientational jump motion fully comparable to the cage-rototranslational jump motion in supercooled liquids. Correlation times were calculated from rotational autocorrelation functions showing good agreement with previous reported dielectric results. From mean waiting and persistence times calculated directly from trajectory results, we are able to explain which microscopic mechanisms lead to characteristic times associated with $\alpha$ and $\beta$-relaxation times measured experimentally. We found that two nonequivalent groups of molecules have a longer characteristic time than the other two nonequivalent groups, both of them belonging to the asymmetric unit of the monoclinic (C2/c) lattice.

Abstract:Glass-forming liquids are broadly classified as being fragile or strong, depending on the deviation from Arrhenius behavior of their relaxation times. A fragile to strong crossover is observed or inferred in liquids like water and silica, and more recently also in metallic glasses and phase change alloys, leading to the expectation that such a crossover is more widely realised among glass formers. We investigate computationally the well-studied Kob-Andersen model, accessing temperatures well below the mode coupling temperature $T_{MCT}$. We find that relaxation times exhibit a crossover in dynamics around $T_{MCT}$, and discuss whether it bears characteristics of the fragile to strong crossover. Several aspects of dynamical heterogeneity exhibit behavior mirroring the dynamical crossover, whereas thermodynamic quantities do not. In particular, the Adam-Gibbs relation describing the relation between relaxation times and configurational entropy continues to hold below the dynamical crossover, when anharmonic corrections to the vibrational entropy are included.

Abstract:Currently, there is a debate whether the structural relaxation of polar liquids is more faithfully reflected (i) by the generically shaped response detected by dynamic light scattering or rather (ii) by the slower, more stretched, system-dependent susceptibility response recorded by dielectric spectroscopy. In this work, nonlinearly induced transients probing structural relaxation reveal that near the glass transition, alternative (ii) is appropriate for propylene glycol. Results from shear rheology and from calorimetry corroborate this finding, underscoring the previously advanced notion (Moch et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 228001, 2022) that the reorientationally probed structural susceptibility of viscous liquids displays a nongeneric spectral shape.

Abstract:Complementary Neutron Spin Echo and X-ray experiments and Molecular Dynamics simulations have been performed on difluorotetrachloroethane (CFCl2-CFCl2) glassy crystal. Static, single-molecule reorientational dynamics and collective dynamics properties are investigated. The orientational disorder is characterized at different temperatures and a change in nature of rotational dynamics is observed. We show that dynamics can be described by some scaling predictions of the Mode Coupling Theory (MCT) and a critical temperature $T_{c}$ is determined. Our results also confirm the strong analogy between molecular liquids and plastic crystals for which $\alpha$-relaxation times and non-ergodicity parameters are controlled by the non trivial static correlations as predicted by MCT.

Abstract:Molecular anisotropy plays an important role in the glass transition of a liquid. Recently, a novel bulk glass state has been discovered by optical microscopy experiments on suspensions of ellipsoidal colloids. “Liquid glass” is a disordered analog of a nematic liquid crystal, in which rotation motion is hindered but particles diffuse freely. Global nematic order is suppressed as clusters of aligned particles intertwine. We perform Brownian dynamics simulations to test the structure and dynamics of a dense system of soft ellipsoidal particles. As seen in the experiments and in accordance with predictions from the mode coupling theory, on the time scale of our simulations, rotation motion is frozen but translation motion persists in liquid glass. Analyses of the dynamic structure functions for translation and rotation corroborates the presence of two separate glass transitions for rotation and translation, respectively. Even though the equilibrium state should be nematic, aligned structures remain small and orientational order rapidly decays with increasing size. Long-wavelength fluctuations are remnants of the isotropic-nematic transition.

Abstract:Below the onset temperature T o , the equilibrium relaxation time of most glass-forming liquids exhibits glassy dynamics characterized by a super-Arrhenius temperature dependence. In this supercooled regime, the relaxation dynamics also proceeds through localized elastic excitations corresponding to hopping events between inherent states, i.e., potential-energy-minimizing configurations of the liquid. Despite its importance in distinguishing the supercooled regime from the high-temperature regime, the microscopic origin of T o is not yet known. Here, we construct a theory for the onset temperature in two dimensions and find that an inherent-state melting transition, described by the binding–unbinding transition of dipolar elastic excitations, delineates the supercooled regime from the high-temperature regime. The corresponding melting transition temperature is in good agreement with the onset temperature found in various two-dimensional (2D) atomistic models of glass formers and an experimental binary colloidal system confined to a water–air interface. Additionally, we find the predictions for the renormalized elastic moduli to agree with the experimentally observed values for the latter 2D colloidal system. We further discuss the predictions of our theory on the displacement and density correlations at supercooled conditions, which are consistent with observations of the Mermin–Wagner fluctuations in experiments and molecular simulations.
Dynamics characterization of the glass formation of twist-bend liquid crystal dimers through dielectric studies

Abstract:Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to study the molecular orientational dynamics of the glass-forming, thioether-linked cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal dimers. As was expected theoretically, two different relaxation processes that contributed to the dielectric permittivity of dimers were observed. The low-frequency relaxation mode, m1, was attributed to an end-over-end rotation of the dipolar groups parallel to the director. The high-frequency relaxation mode, m2, was associated with the precessional motions of the dipolar groups around the director. The relaxation times for both modes were analyzed over a wide temperature range down to near the glass transition temperature. The different analytic functions used to characterize the temperature dependence of the relaxation times of the two modes are discussed. Notably, the critical-like description via the dynamic scaling model gave good numerical fittings and a consistent physical picture of the orientational dynamics on approaching the glass transition. Compared to the IR spectroscopy finding, in the higher temperature region of the twist-bend phase, where the longitudinal correlations of dipoles grew, the m1 mode experienced a sudden increase in enthalpy. At the same time, m2 changed continuously, which is described by the critical mode coupling behavior. Both types of molecular motion appear to strongly cooperate at a low-temperature range of the twist-bend phase but change in a coordinated manner as the temperature of the material approaches the glass transition point. As was expected, it was found that both molecular motions determined the glass dynamics at the same glass transition temperature.

Abstract:We perform molecular-dynamics simulations of a molecular system in supercooled states for different values of inertia parameters to provide evidence that the long-time dynamics depends only on the equilibrium structure. This observation is consistent with the prediction of the mode-coupling theory for the glass transition and with the hypothesis that the potential energy-landscape controls the slow dynamics. We also find that the dynamical properties at intermediate wave number depend on the spatial correlation of the molecule's geometrical center.

Abstract:We probe the mechanical response of two supercooled liquids, glycerol and ortho -terphenyl, by conducting rheological experiments at very weak stresses. We find a complex fluid behavior suggesting the gradual emergence of an extended, delicate solid-like network in both materials in the supercooled state—i.e., above the glass transition. This network stiffens as it ages, and very early in this process it already extends over macroscopic distances, conferring all well known features of soft glassy rheology (yield-stress, shear thinning, aging) to the supercooled liquids. Such viscoelastic behavior of supercooled molecular glass formers is difficult to observe because the large stresses in conventional rheology can easily shear-melt the solid-like structure. The work presented here, combined with evidence for long-lived heterogeneity from previous single-molecule studies [Zondervan R, Kulzer F, Berkhout GCG, Orrit M (2007) Local viscosity of supercooled glycerol near T g probed by rotational diffusion of ensembles and single dye molecules. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104:12628–12633], has a profound impact on the understanding of the glass transition because it casts doubt on the widely accepted assumption of the preservation of ergodicity in the supercooled state.
Experimental and numerical signatures of dynamical crossover in orientationally disordered crystals

Abstract:By means of NMR experiment and MD computer simulation we investigate the dynamical properties of a chloroadamantane orientationally disordered crystal. We find a plastic-plastic dynamical transition at T_x ~ 330 K in the pico-nanosecond regime. It is interpreted as the rotational analogue of the Goldstein crossing temperature between quasi-free diffusion and activated regime predicted in liquids. Below T_x, NMR experimental data are well described by a Frenkel model corresponding to a strongly anisotropic motion. At higher temperatures, a drastic deviation is observed toward quasi-isotropic rotational diffusion. Close to T_x, we observe that two-step relaxations emerge. An interpretation which is based on the present study of a specific heat anomaly detected by a recent calorimetric experiment is proposed.
