Abstract:The ability to provide emotional and physical support to a patient during one of the most significant moments of her life is a privilege afforded to intrapartum nurses who attend to laboring and delivering patients. Labor support improves birth outcomes, reduces cesarean birth rates, and decreases anesthesia use. Within the hospital context, this quality improvement project investigated the effects of educating intrapartum nurses about labor support and providing them with hands-on training. Surveys, including the Self-Efficacy Labor Support Scale, were given preeducation and posteducation to evaluate and document knowledge acquisition. Results support teaching intrapartum nurses learning evidence-based labor comfort strategies to support a woman's labor preference.
The effects of childbirth self-efficacy and anxiety during pregnancy on prehospitalization labor

Abstract:Objective: To describe levels of anxiety and self-efficacy for childbirth in nulliparous women during the late third trimester and to identify relationships among those variables, prehospitalization labor pain, management strategies, and hospital admission status. Design: A longitudinal, descriptive study. Participants: Thirty-five English-speaking nulliparous women, 18 to 40 years of age, more than or equal to 38 week's gestation, with uncomplicated pregnancies. All participants had a significant other (husband or partner) and attended childbirth education programs. Main outcome measures: Spielberger Trait Anxiety Inventory, Prenatal Self-Evaluation Questionnaire, Childbirth Self-Efficacy Inventory, McGill Pain Questionnaire-Short Form, postpartum interviews, and medical records review. Results: Prenatal anxiety was significantly related to self-efficacy for childbirth in late pregnancy, labor pain, number of hours at home in labor, and admitting cervical dilation. The number of management strategies used was related to pain scores during labor before hospital admission. Women who spent longer periods of time at home in labor arrived at the hospital with a greater cervical dilation. Conclusions: Antenatal characteristics influence intrapartal outcomes in nulliparas. Labor environment, at home and in the hospital, is recognized as an important component of the first childbirth experience.
Effectiveness of Childbirth Self-Efficacy Enhancing Classes on Labor Length and Outcomes among Egyptian Primiparous Women: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract:Introduction: Childbirth self-efficacy has repeatedly been shown to raise satisfaction with childbirth, reduce the need for analgesic, and promote the use of different childbirth alternatives. However, the measures to improve the childbirth self-efficacy had rarely been investigated among Egyptian primiparous women. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of childbirth self-efficacy enhancing classes on labor length and outcomes among Egyptian primiparous women. Methods: A quasi-experimental research approach was carried out on prospective, consecutive sample of 148 pregnant women at the end of pregnancy. A prenatal education study group (n = 74) and a control group receiving standard antenatal care (n = 74) make up the first and second groups, respectively. Between October 2021 and October 2022, the study was conducted at the antenatal clinic. The following four tools were employed to fulfill the study's objective: A structured interviewing form, a childbirth self-efficacy inventory, a follow-up checklist for monitoring maternal and neonatal outcomes during labor, and three antenatal education sessions to boost childbirth self-efficacy are all examples of tools that can be used. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS for windows version 20.0. Results: Approximately 68.9% of women in the experimental group gave birth vaginally, compared to 29.7% of those in the control group with (p = .001), according to the study's findings. In the experimental group, regular labor took an average of 8 to 12 h, but it took more than 12 h in the control group. Birth weight (>3000g) in the experimental group compared to (2000-3000 g) in the control group, as well as the Apgar score at 1 min and 5 min, were highly statistically significance between two groups with (p = .001). The means±SD of the childbirth self-efficacy result scores were better in the study group than in control groups regarding length of delivery and vaginal delivery (248.2 ± 19.4 versus 144.6 ± 21.6 and 250.1 ± 18.2 versus 137.9 ± 21.5, respectively). Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, antenatal education classes have a real chance of assisting primiparous women in increasing their childbirth self-efficacy and improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Factors relating to childbirth self efficacy among pregnant women: a CHAID analysis

Abstract:Childbirth self-efficacy is a useful measure for determining a woman's confidence in managing childbirth and for determining any preconceptions that require reinforcement. Childbirth self-efficacy is also particularly helpful in advising not only how to cope with birth, but also maternal well-being and fostering the improvement of a wide variety of perinatal outcomes. The present study aims to determine the factors affecting childbirth self-efficacy in pregnant women. The sample size consisted of 380 pregnant women between the ages of 18 and 45. Data were collected via face to face interviews using the Childbirth Self Efficacy Scale Short Form (CBSEI-32) in the Akdeniz University Hospital between November 2019 and February 2020 and used Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detector analyses, resulting in a mean CBSEI-32 score of 244.279 ± 45.121. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that income status affects self-efficacy, and personal experiences such as foetal loss affect a woman's childbirth self-efficacy. In addition, it was also found that the level of prenatal education affected childbirth self-efficacy. Health professionals should assess pregnant women during the antenatal period in terms of their childbirth self efficacy and prepare personalised training programs and plan initiatives to increase perceptions of self-efficacy.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Childbirth self-efficacy is one of the important psychological parameters to determine a woman's belief in her confidence in managing childbirth and to measure women's perceptions of her need for reinforcement.What do the results of this study add? Sociodemographic and obstetric characteristics of women affect their childbirth self-efficacy perception positively and negatively. Women's birth self-efficacy can be improved positively with prenatal education. In addition, it is one of the interesting findings of the study that the self-efficacy level of women who had a previous low experience was high.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Women's childbirth self efficacy can be improved with trainings and appropriate nursing interventions. For this reason, it is important to determine the factors affecting the self-efficacy perception of women. In future studies, the childbirth self-efficacy perceptions of women in different samples (risky pregnancy, disabled pregnant, etc.) should be measured.

Abstract:A developmental model of the origins of maternal self-efficacy and its impact on maternal sensitivity was tested. Participants were 92 primiparous mothers and their 6-month-old infants. Mothers completed questionnaires about remembered care from their own parents and self-esteem prenatally, satisfaction with support, infant temperament, and maternal self-efficacy postnatally, and they participated in a laboratory observation with their infants. Maternal self-efficacy was predicted by remembered maternal care as mediated by global self-esteem. Infant soothability predicted maternal self-efficacy independently and in conjunction with distress to novelty and in conjunction with both distress to limits and satisfaction with support. Maternal self-efficacy interacted with distress to limits to predict maternal sensitivity during emotionally arousing activities. High infant distress was associated with less sensitive maternal behavior when maternal self-efficacy was moderately low and extremely high, but was positively associated with sensitive maternal behavior when self-efficacy was moderately high. Implications for future research are discussed.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between breastfeeding success and breastfeeding self-efficacy and maternal infant attachment. Methods: The study was conducted in xxx Family Health Center between March -June 2017. The questionnaire form, the LATCH Breastfeeding Identification and Assessment Scale, the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Maternal Attachment Inventory were used to collect data in the study. The Kruskall Wallis Analysis Mann, Whitney-U Analysis, Spearman Correlation and Kurtosis and skewness coefficients, Internal consistency Cronbach α coefficient were used in data analysis. Results: The women who participated in the study had an average score of 9.87±0.42 in the LATCH Breastfeeding Identification and Assessment Scale, 63.51±10.71 in the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale and 101.58±2.28 in the Maternal Attachment Inventory. Abstract:Aim: The primary purpose of this study was to explore relationships between self-efficacy, peer support, coping style, intent to work at the bedside, and resilience in nursing students. Background: Resilience correlates with one-year retention at the bedside. Retention of bedside nurses improves patient outcomes. Method: A quantitative, correlational design determined relationships between variables. Surveys were completed by 205 participants. Surveys included a program type list, intent to work at the bedside items, the Brief Cope Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Peer Group Caring Interaction Scale. Results: Significant relationships were found between resilience and self-efficacy, resilience and coping style, and peer support and approach coping style. Half of the respondents intended to work at the bedside for two years after graduation. Self-efficacy and avoidance coping were resilience predictors. Conclusion: To support resilience, educators should facilitate students' development of self-efficacy and approach coping style.

Abstract:Objectives: To identify factors that help explain associations between parent-staff interactions and: (1) parental depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress; and (2) parent-child bonding in the neonatal intensive care unit. Study design: Our cross-sectional mixed methods survey investigated the ways in which parental-staff interactions relate to parental distress and parent-child bonding. Parents with babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (n = 165) completed validated measures and open-ended questions about their experiences with staff. Using a sequential explanatory approach, we examined: (1) whether and how parental self-efficacy and personal time mediated parent-staff interactions on distress and bonding; and (2) parental written accounts of experiences with staff. Results: Multiple mediation analyses revealed that parent-staff interactions exhibited an: (1) indirect effect on parental depression (b = -0.05, SE = 0.02, CI [-0.10, -0.01]), anxiety (b = -0.08, SE = 0.04, CI [-0.16, -0.02]), and parent-child bonding (b = -0.26, SE = 0.08, CI [-0.43, -0.11]) through parental self-efficacy; and (2) indirect effect on parental post-traumatic stress (b = -0.08, SE = 0.04, CI [-0.17, -0.00], completely standardized indirect effect = -0.06) through parental personal time. Thematic analyses revealed that emotional and instructional support from staff helped build parental self-efficacy. Trust with staff helped parents feel comfortable leaving the bedside and engage in basic needs (eg, eat, sleep). Conclusions: Family-staff dynamics are the foundation for high quality family-centered care. Staff who empower parents to participate in care, engage in parenting tasks, and take care of themselves may reduce their distress and improve relationships among staff, parents, and babies.

Abstract:Problem Research suggests that breastfeeding self-efficacy (i.e., a mother's perceived ability and confidence to breastfeed her new-born) is associated with body image experiences and wider psychosocial factors. However, much of this work is focused on negative body image and has relied on samples from predominantly Westernised, industrialised nations. Background To extend knowledge, we sought to examine the extent to which indices of positive body image (body appreciation), negative body image (body dissatisfaction, breast size dissatisfaction), and psychosocial factors (body acceptance by others, postpartum partner support) are associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy in sample of mothers from Israel. Hypothesis We hypothesised that body appreciation, body dissatisfaction, breast size dissatisfaction, body acceptance by others, and postpartum partner support would each be significantly associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy in Israeli mothers. Method A total of 352 mothers from Israel, with an infant aged six months or younger, were asked to complete an online survey that measured the aforementioned constructs. Findings Correlational and linear model analyses indicated that only body appreciation was significantly associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy. Body acceptance by others was significantly associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy in correlational but not regression analyses. These effects were consistent across primiparous and multiparous mothers. Discussion In Israeli mothers, at least, a limited set of body image and body image-related indices appear to be associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy. Conclusion Overall, these findings suggest that positive body image may be associated with breastfeeding self-efficacy in women from Israel, though more research is needed.

Abstract:Objectives The role played by the quality of the couple relationship on the outcomes of birth is well known. In particular, couple conflict is linked to a more challenging childbirth, such as more complicated labor experience. Although this link is evident, less is known about possible mediators of this relationship. Therefore, this study aims to build upon previous evidence by examining the serial mediating role of maternal psychological distress and prenatal attachment on the relationships between couple conflict and labor experience. Methods A longitudinal design was carried out on 161 pregnant women (M age = 31.63±4.88). At weeks 31–32 of gestation, women filled out the Romance Qualities Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, the State Anxiety Inventory, and the Prenatal Attachment Inventory. The day of childbirth, hospital healthcare staff registered the clinical data of labor (duration of labor, administration of oxytocin and epidural analgesia in hours). To verify the hypothesized model a Structural Equation Modeling was performed. The indirect effects were tested using the bootstrapping method with 5,000 bootstrap samples. Results The assessed structural model produced adequate fit to the data [χ 2 = 20.084, df = 13, p = 0.093; RMSEA = 0.058 (90% C.I. = 0.010–0.106), CFI = 0.985, SRMR = 0.029] and the variables in the model accounted for 47% of the variance in labor experience. Couple conflict affects the experience of labor only indirectly, both through the serial mediating role of psychological distress and prenatal attachment (β = 0.04; 95% CI: [0.002-0.046]) and through the mediation of psychological distress (β = 0.10; 95% CI: [0.011-0.098]). Conclusions Overall, the results showed that couple conflict during pregnancy has negative outcomes, affecting indirectly the labor experience. These findings have important clinical implications for potential couple interventions during pregnancy that may favor a less complicated labor experience. Abstract:Breastfeeding knowledge, intention, and self-efficacy affect breastfeeding rates during the postpartum period. Insufficient knowledge, lack of intention, and poor breastfeeding self-efficacy reduce the likelihood of breastfeeding postpartum. The purposes of this study were to (1) assess women’s intention to breastfeed and knowledge and self-efficacy regarding breastfeeding following childbirth, and to (2) identify the factors associated with postpartum breastfeeding during women’s hospital stays. This longitudinal study with a pretest and posttest design study recruited pregnant women from the gynecology and obstetrics outpatient departments and inpatient wards at a medical center in northern Taiwan. Demographic and obstetric characteristics were recorded, and participants were assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale, the Breastfeeding Knowledge Questionnaire, the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale—Short Form, and breastfeeding status postpartum. Of the 120 participants, 25% reported breastfeeding during the postpartum hospital stay. Postpartum breastfeeding was associated with lower levels of education and higher prenatal levels of breastfeeding intention. Establishing a breastfeeding-friendly environment in the family and workplace may effectively increase continued breastfeeding.

Emotional well-being and predictors of birth-anxiety, self-efficacy, and psychosocial adaptation in healthy pregnant women

Abstract:Background: A broad body of studies have shown that emotional well-being during pregnancy influences birth outcome and postpartum mood state, but few longitudinal studies have examined the extent of changes of emotional well-being during late pregnancy. Furthermore, up to now it has remained unclear which factors are predictive for emotional well-being during pregnancy. This prospective longitudinal study has two main aims. First of all, possibly occurring changes of birth anxiety, self-efficacy for labor and delivery, and psychosocial adaptation to pregnancy in primiparous healthy women during the final trimenon will be described. Second, predictors of these assessed constructs during the final trimenon as well as the extent of these constructs as predictors for the psychological status postpartum will be shown. Methods: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted with 61 pregnant women recruited from childbirth classes. Results: The results showed significant changes in emotional well-being--measured by birth anxiety, self-efficacy for labor and delivery, and psychosocial adaptation to pregnancy--during the final trimenon: the women were more confident in their ability to cope with labor and delivery. Birth anxiety did not change significantly during the final trimenon. Regression analyses revealed different psychosocial predictor variables for emotional well-being during late pregnancy. The predictive factor for an unfavorable psychological status postpartum was birth anxiety. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the importance of discovering psychosocial problems of pregnant woman early in pregnancy could be imperative in preventing psychosocial problems later in pregnancy as well as postpartum.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among social support, self-efficacy, and resilience in early career registered nurses. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 747 early career registered nurses. Data collection was performed between August and November 2015. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Among the three factors of social support, only the impact of coworker support on nurse resilience is fully mediated by self-efficacy; friend support had a significant positive direct effect on self-efficacy and an indirect effect on nurse resilience. This would suggest the importance of administrators/managers understanding how to promote coworker support, increase self-efficacy, foster a positive work climate, and develop effective mentorship programs to improve early career registered nurses resilience and mitigate factors leading to turnover.

Abstract:Clinical practicum experiences for nursing students provides the students an opportunity to apply concepts learned in class, practice skills learned in lab, and interact with patients, families, and other nurses. Although students look forward to these experiences, they often feel intimated and anxious about them. Clinical instructors play an important role in this experience and can either help or hinder student learning and self-efficacy. Using Bandura's Social Learning Theory as foundation, this descriptive study examined the relationship between perceived instructor effectiveness and student self-efficacy. Data were collected from a BSN school of nursing at a Midwestern USA comprehensive masters university. The instruments used were the Nursing Clinical Teacher Effectiveness Inventory (NCTEI) and the student self-efficacy (SSE) questionnaire. Participants (n = 236) were from a traditional nursing program with 86% female and 14% male. Data was analyzed using Pearson's correlation and MANCOVA. Results indicated: Out of the five areas of attributes, one area showed significant (p < .01) difference between the lower and higher self-efficacy groups and with specific teacher behaviors within the Evaluation category. Students with high self-efficacy reported faculty who suggested ways to improve, identified strengths and weaknesses, observed frequently, communicated expectations, gives positive reinforcement ad corrects without belittling. This can help faculty develop behaviors that increases student learning and student self-efficacy.

Abstract:Self-efficacy in nursing students help س them feel competent in clinical fields and is alsoeffective for students’ achievement. High self- efficacy is needed for secure attachment and decreasingalienation between students and their families and friends. Objective: Determine the relationshipbetween Nursing students’ self-efficacy and their attachment to their families and friends. Setting: Thestudy was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing, Alexandria University, Egypt. Subjects: Stratifiedrandom sampling technique was used in this study to recruit a representative sample of 350 students(88 students from the first semester, 63 students from the third semester, 60students from the fifthsemester and 139 students from the seventh semester). Tools: Three tools were used to collectnecessary data namely; socio-demographic &academic data structured interview schedule, inventoryof Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) and adolescent Social Self-Efficacy Scale (S-EFF). Results:More than three quarters (78.6%, 76.6%, 85.1% respectively) of the studied students had high socialself-efficacy, were highly attached to their parents and peers. In addition, 97.5% of students who hadhigh self-efficacy were highly attached to their parents, and all students (100%) who had high selfefficacywere highly attached to their peers. Conclusion: A positive relationship was found betweenself-efficacy of students and their attachment to their families and friends. Recommendations: Futureresearch is needed to examine the different impacts mothers and fathers have on their children’sattachment processes. Also, health education programs may be needed to explain attachment ofparents to their students.
Perceptions about labor companionship at public teaching hospitals in three Arab countries

Abstract:Objective: To explore the perspectives of women, female relatives, and healthcare providers on labor companionship. Methods: In a qualitative study, data were collected from women giving birth, female family members, and healthcare staff via semi-structured interviews in three large public teaching hospitals in Beirut (Lebanon), Damascus (Syria), and Mansoura (Egypt) between May and December 2012. Focus groups were conducted with midwives, nurses, and medical residents. Data were assessed by thematic analysis. Results: A total of 69 women, 57 female relatives, and 28 obstetricians were interviewed, and two focus groups discussions occurred. Women reported that being alone during labor raises feelings of fear and anxiety. They reported appreciating professional support, but found comfort in the psychological support offered by family members during labor. Midwives and nurses pointed to structural factors related to the organization of care and to the marginalization of their role as barriers to implementing best practices. Obstetricians referred to the absence of prenatal education classes, and social norms as factors impeding the organization of labor support initiatives. Conclusion: Implementing labor companionship can improve women's childbirth experiences and outcomes. Organizational structural barriers and non-supportive providers' attitudes need to be addressed to influence hospital practices.

Abstract:Background: Recognizing predictors of positive birth experience is viewed as essential for minimizing negative experiences during childbirth that are related to current obstetric care, especially when those could be attributed to intrapartum interventions. The CEQ-E is a suitable instrument for investigating maternal birth experience within the Spanish population, highlighting the necessity to identify predictors for all its domains. This study aimed to identify predictors of positive birth experience based on socio-demographic and clinical variables, and obstetric interventions. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted with consecutive sampling (N = 301). Quantitative data were collected by the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ-E) and an Ad hoc questionnaire. Clinical data was obtained from participants' medical records. Descriptive, bivariant and multivariant analysis were performed. Results: The CEQ overall mean score was 3.18(SD:0.42), showing the highest score for the professional support (3.79; SD: 0.43) and the lowest for the own capacity (2.8; SD:0.57). All domains and overall score showed negative correlations with the number of intrapartum interventions (p ≤ .001). Inductions of labour, instrumental deliveries, and caesarean sections were inversely related to; overall birth experience score (p ≤ .001), perceived safety (p ≤ .001), and own capacity (p ≤ .001). Epidural analgesia was linked to worse values of birth experience (p ≤ .001). Predictors of positive birth experience were identified as having a midwife as birth attendant (p ≤ .001) and neonatal higher Apgar scores at birth (p ≤ .001), whereas higher maternal education grade (p = .04), inductions of labour (p ≤ .001) and caesarean births (p ≤ .001) had worse values on birth experience. Conclusion: Women reported a positive birth experience, and professional support was highly valued. Key predictors of lower scores in birth experience included higher maternal education, caesarean and instrumental deliveries, and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. Spontaneous labour onset predicted better capacity and safety. Epidural use decreased participation. Midwife-attended births reported better scores on birth experience, highlighting their importance in maternal care.

Abstract:Background The nursing shortage is apparent again after nearly five decades of having a stable workforce. One novel development is that new Registered Nurses (RNs) are exiting their careers too early. Many of them leave the profession for multiple reasons such as burnout and family obligations, yet one reason has emerged – lack of readiness for practice, that also drives the RNs to leave the profession. Purpose The purpose of this study was twofold — (1) to investigate the relationship between students' characteristics, their Generalized Self-Efficacy (GSE), Perceived Faculty Support (PFS), the Assessment Technologies, Inc. (ATI) Comprehensive Predictor RN Exam scores and their self-report of readiness for practice and (2) to examine which variables best explains the students' readiness for practice. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive correlational research design with convenience sampling was utilized. Descriptive statistics were obtained to investigate the students' socio-demographic data. The Pearson r and multiple regression were used to analyze the relationships and influence between dependent variables Casey-Fink Readiness for Practice scale (CFRPS) and independent variables, students' characteristics, GSE, PFS, and ATI scores. Results One hundred forty-three (143) out of 416 students in five baccalaureate schools from the western region of the United States participated in the survey. Findings showed GSE and PFS had significant positive correlations with students' readiness for practice. Further, factors of CFRPS in learning strategies, problem-solving, resourcefulness, and team player are best explained by GSE and PFS, accounting for 91 % of the variance. Conclusion Students' GSE and PFS can contribute to their readiness for practice. Nurse educators must employ strategies that will bolster students' preparedness by improving their sense of self-efficacy and showing them the utmost faculty support.

Abstract:Satisfaction with birth and healthcare provider experiences have long-term effects for maternal health. Research has shown that mothers who report more trust, respect, and self-efficacy in their relationship with their healthcare providers are more likely to report positive birthing experiences. Further, individuals with obesity, including pregnant mothers, are more likely to experience weight-related stigma from healthcare providers which may negatively impact satisfaction with this relationship. Thus, the current study examines maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) as a moderator between birth and provider satisfaction.

Abstract:Background: the objective of this longitudinal study (from pregnancy to the end of the sixth month postpartum) is to elucidate the association between maternal self-efficacy, defined as a mother's confidence in her ability to breastfeed, and breastfeeding outcomes. Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted among high-risk pregnant women (including those with conditions such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, pre-eclampsia, and other pathological medical conditions) and normal-risk pregnant women in Greece. The high-risk group included 164 women, while the normal-risk group comprised 154 women. Data were collected using validated psychometric scales, including the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Maternal Antenatal Attachment Scale, and Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale. Results: Higher maternal self-efficacy was significantly associated with a longer duration and greater exclusivity of breastfeeding. A statistically significant relationship between the type of breastfeeding and the degree of breastfeeding self-efficacy was observed at multiple postpartum milestones: in the first and third 24 h postpartum, and at the end of the sixth week, third month, and sixth month postpartum. Conclusion: The findings underscore the critical role of maternal self-efficacy in breastfeeding success, influenced by individual psychological factors and broader socio-cultural contexts. Strengthening maternal self-efficacy is essential for improving breastfeeding outcomes.
