Abstract:<p>The metal protrusion inside the silo greatly alters the electric field distribution and can affect the risk of electrostatic discharge in the silo, lacking thorough research. In this paper, we analyzed the electric field distribution in a conical-cylindrical silo with the metal protrusion mounted inside by using the finite element method. The effects of the repose angle α, metal protrusion diameter <span class="math"><math>Dm</math></span>, and the distance between the protrusion and the heap surface <span class="math"><math>Hm</math></span> on the electric field at the metal protrusion were discussed. The results show that larger α leads to a higher probability of the discharge. Decreasing <span class="math"><math>Dm</math></span> and <span class="math"><math>Hm</math></span> leads to the increase of the induced charge on the protrusion, increasing the electric field strength, as well as the probability of electrostatic discharge at the protrusion. The neutralization effect of the discharge from the protrusion at <span class="math"><math>Dm</math></span> = 1 cm accounts for the weaker discharge on the heap surface. The discharge energy of the protrusion is in the range of 0.06–4 mJ. The metal protrusion should be made as small as possible and kept away from the charged powder to reduce its harm.</p>
