Abstract:Biodegradation is an eco-friendly measure to address plastic pollution. This study screened four bacterial isolates that were capable of degrading recalcitrant polymers, i.e., low-density polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene. The unique bacterial isolates were obtained from plastic polluted environment. Dermacoccus sp. MR5 (accession no. OP592184) and Corynebacterium sp. MR10 (accession no. OP536169) from Malaysian mangroves and Bacillus sp. BS5 (accession no. OP536168) and Priestia sp. TL1 (accession no. OP536170) from a sanitary landfill. The four isolates showed a gradual increase in the microbial count and the production of laccase and esterase enzymes after 4 weeks of incubation with the polymers (independent experiment set). Bacillus sp. BS5 produced the highest laccase 15.35 ± 0.19 U/mL and showed the highest weight loss i.e., 4.84 ± 0.6% for PS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups as a result of oxidation reactions by enzymes. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis showed the oxidation of the polymers to small molecules (alcohol, ethers, and acids) assimilated by the microbes during the degradation. Field emission scanning electron microscopy showed bacterial colonization, biofilm formation, and surface erosion on the polymer surface. The result provided significant insight into enzyme activities and the potential of isolates to target more than one type of polymer for degradation.

Abstract:The global production of plastic has reached unprecedented levels, with polyethylene (PE) being one of the most widely used polymers, accounting for the largest market share. However, the extensive usage of PE has led to significant environmental challenges due to its recalcitrant nature and resistance to degradation. To address this pressing issue, effective degradation processes for PE are essential. Physical and chemical degradation routes for PE are discussed, but microbial degradation emerges as a promising, eco-friendly approach to tackle plastic waste. However, the widespread use of transparent and non-transparent high-density polyethylene (HDPE) presents another challenge in their disposal alongside complex mixtures of wet waste, making their separation difficult. Notably, Bacillus sp. has garnered attention for its potential in biodegradation abilities for various petroleum-based plastics, including PE. This study addresses the gap in HDPE biodegradation research by comparing the degradation of transparent and non-transparent HDPE using Bacillus sp. The biodegradation treatment process involved inoculating bacterial cultures into PE sheets as a carbon source and monitoring their cell growth over 125 days under controlled conditions. Furthermore, the post-degradation PE was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, surface roughness evaluation, tensile testing, and X-ray diffraction for crystallinity calculation. Bacillus sp. effectively degraded both T-PE and NT-PE, with 1.97% and 4.66% weight loss, respectively. The crystallinity of T-PE was higher than NT-PE, potentially hindering bacterial degradation. Biofilm formation, decrease in tensile strength, and surface erosion further supported the degradation process, making Bacillus sp. a potential candidate for plastic waste management.

Abstract:Due to increasing production of plastic and its piling up is a critical concern hence ways to degrade the plastic needs to be sought out. Microplastics (MPs) of the size of micron or less have been found everywhere, even in human blood, highlighting the adversity of the situation. Natural and microbial degradation mechanisms of MPs, focusing on polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) have been explored by the study. Natural degradation is hindered by stability and hydrophobic properties of the polymers. Despite recycling efforts, a significant portion of PET waste ends up in landfills and the environment, posing threats to ecosystems and organisms. MPs are ingested by aquatic organisms, serve as substrates for unwanted microbes, and act as vectors for toxic chemicals. Atmospheric and aquatic fluxes contribute to the transport of MPs from production sources to marine environments. Microorganisms like bacteria, can degrade plastic polymers. Bacterial cultures are found to be effective in degrading MPs through extracellular and intracellular enzyme systems. Bacterial degradation of PE and PET has been demonstrated in laboratory conditions, with varying removal efficiencies and degradation durations. Abiotic factors like oxygen and light help in the PE degradation, while hydrolase enzymes are involved in PET degradation. For effective plastic management, a cyclic bioeconomy based method is necessary, which involves reconsideration of the entire value chain of plastic. Future-proofing plastic waste management requires delinking plastic production from fossil-based raw materials and energy sources. Additionally, addressing agricultural and food waste losses can contribute to reducing the carbon footprint associated with plastic production. Overall, understanding the microbial degradation of plastics offers promising avenues for combating plastic pollution and achieving a more sustainable plastic waste management system.

Abstract:A serological survey for a range of avian paramyxoviruses (PMV) was carried out among wildfowl from southern Spain, 1990 to 1992, using the hemagglutination inhibition technique. We collected 579 sera from 24 avian families (18 aquatic and six non-aquatic). Antibodies were detected to all paramyxoviruses in waterfowl, with a notable prevalence of antibodies to PMV-8 (43%) and to a lesser extent PMV-6 (21%). By contrast, in non-aquatic species high antibody prevalences were detected only to PMV-2 (60%), particularly in sparrows (68%), while antibody prevalences to other PMV's were moderate or low.

Abstract:Synthetic plastic is used throughout daily life and industry, threatening organisms with microplastic pollution. Polystyrene is a major plastic polymer and also widely found sources of plastic wastes and microplastics. Here, we report that Enterobacter hormaechei LG3 (CP118279.1), a facultative anaerobic bacterial strain isolated from the gut of Tenebrio molitor larvae (mealworms) can oxidize and depolymerize polystyrene under anaerobic conditions. LG3 performed biodegradation while forming a biofilm on the plastic surface. PS biodegradation was characterized by analyses of surface oxidation, change in morphology and molecular weights, and production of biodegraded derivative. The biodegradation performance by LG3 was compared with PS biodegradation by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SCGB1 under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions. In addition, through nanopore sequencing technology, we identified degradative enzymes, including thiol peroxidase (tpx), alkyl hydroperoxide reductase C (ahpC) and bacterioferritin comigratory protein (bcp). Along with the upregulation of degradative enzymes for biodegradation, changes in lipid A and biofilm-associated proteins were also observed after the cells were incubated with polystyrene microplastics. Our results provide evidence for anaerobic biodegradation by polystyrene-degrading bacteria and show alterations in gene expression patterns after polystyrene microplastics treatment in the opportunistic pathogen Enterobacter hormaechei.
Structural and Functional Characteristics of the Anaerobic Microbial Community Emerging upon Its Contact with Extruded Polystyrene Waste

Abstract:Increasing plastic pollution is a serious environmental problem as widespread production and inadequate disposal of plastic materials lead to adverse impacts on ecosystems. The structural and functional characteristics of the anaerobic microbial community contacting with extruded polystyrene (XPS) waste were investigated under methanogenic (MG) and nitrate-(NR) and sulfate-reducing (SR) conditions. The presence of XPS in the microbial community was shown to have no negative effect on the processes of biogas formation and, on the contrary, resulted in an increase in the yield of methane and volatile fatty acids and a change in their ratio. Microparticles of different sizes were found in the culture liquid of the variants with XPS: 2.4 × 10 6 /mL (NR), 1.2 × 10 6 /mL (SR), and 0.4 × 10 6 /mL (MG), while no microparticles were found in the control variants. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that in all experimental variants the surface of the polymer became looser, more textured, with formation of irregularities, cracks, and holes. Increased diversity in the microbial community associated with an increase in the number of microbial morphotypes, correlated with the results of high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. When XPS was introduced into an anaerobic community incubated in different donor-acceptor conditions, the number of microbial groups in it increased, as well as the proportion of hydrolytic and acidogenic bacteria ( Sedimentibacter , Lentimicrobium ), acetogenic syntrophs ( Syntrophomonas , Desulfovibrio , Geobacter ), and methanogenic archaea ( Methanosarcina , Methanobacterium ). Our study showed that the XPS waste was not inert for the microbial community, the contact with it resulting in significant changes in its structure and functioning. Changes in the sample surface, emergence of microparticles, and differences in the composition of the intermediate and terminal metabolic products may indicate slow partial degradation of the plastic via fragmentation. However, since the experiments were carried out using household XPS containing various fillers apart from the main polymer, it is probable that, along with polystyrene, additional substances included in its composition (plasticizers, dyes, etc.) are also subject to degradation. The ability of microorganisms to degrade the polymer itself requires further research.

Abstract:Abstract The accumulation of microplastics in various ecosystems has now been well documented and recent evidence suggests detrimental effects on various biological processes due to this pollution. Accumulation of microplastics in the natural environment is ultimately due to the chemical nature of widely used petroleum-based plastic polymers, which typically are inaccessible to biological processing. One way to mitigate this crisis is adoption of plastics that biodegrade if released into natural environments. In this work, we generated microplastic particles from a bio-based, biodegradable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU-FC1) and demonstrated their rapid biodegradation via direct visualization and respirometry. Furthermore, we isolated multiple bacterial strains capable of using TPU-FC1 as a sole carbon source and characterized their depolymerization products. To visualize biodegradation of TPU materials as real-world products, we generated TPU-coated cotton fabric and an injection molded phone case and documented biodegradation by direct visualization and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), both of which indicated clear structural degradation of these materials and significant biofilm formation.

Abstract:Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is one of the significant environmental pollutants as it is resistant to natural degradation. In this study, we reported the LDPE-degrading bacterial strain i.e., Exiguobacterium sp. strain LM-IK2 isolated from plastic dumped soil which shows potential degradation capability. The percent weight loss of LDPE was calculated as − 5.70 ± 0.7 after 90 days of incubation in a carbon-free MSM medium. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis shows that LDPE films show slight surface disruption after treatment with bacteria. The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed the chemical changes in LDPE films e.g., formation and reduction of typical carbonyl peaks after incubation with bacteria. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis displayed an increase in percent crystallinity, with a slight change in total carbon content. Genetic analysis showed the presence of Laccase (167 bp) and Alkane Hydroxylase (330 bp) genes that are responsible for LDPE degradation. Thus, Exiguobacterium sp. strain LM-IK2 has the potential to degrade LDPE and could be further explored to improve its efficiency in the bioremediation of LDPE.

Abstract:Plastics have been consistently produced for their practicality and convenience; however, unmanaged plastics often end up in the ocean and decompose into nano-plastics through photolytic decomposition and weathering, negatively affecting marine life. This can eventually affect humans via the food chain, highlighting the need for effective solutions. Microbial biodegradation has been proposed as a solution to minimize the impact of nano-plastics on the environment, and degradation byproducts can be used in microbial metabolic pathways. In this study, 57 bacterial strains were isolated and identified from a waste treatment facility. Bacterial strains with lipase activity were selected on Tween80 agar plates. Additionally, strains capable of growing on minimal salt agar plates supplemented with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) beads were selected. Incubation in a minimal salt medium with LDPE beads as the sole carbon source led to the selection of Pseudomonas plecoglossicida SYp2123, which is capable of degrading LDPE. This strain was subjected to high cell density culture, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed chemical changes on the surface of LDPE beads. Additionally, field-emission scanning electron microscopy confirmed substantial biodegradation of the surface. P. plecoglossicida SYp2123 was able to degrade LDPE beads. This discovery shows that P. plecoglossicida can potentially be used as an environmentally friendly approach for tackling issues associated with polyethylene waste.

Abstract:The escalating problem of environmental ecological pollution caused by plastics presents a significant challenge, which makes the management of plastic waste urgent nowadays. In this study, a bacterium named WX-2 was isolated and screened for its potential in polymer degradation. Through standard microbiological techniques and 16SrDNA gene sequencing, it was identified as Enterobacter hormaechei . To assess its biodegradability potential, various plastics including High density polyethylene, Polypropylene, Linear low density polyethylene, Poly (butyleneadipate- co -terephthalate) and Polyvinyl chloride were subjected to the study. The biodegradability of the plastics was evaluated using multiphase approaches involving techniques such as Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Mass loss, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Water contact angle, and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results indicated that WX-2 possesses the capability to utilize diverse plastic polymers as sole carbon sources, displaying distinct biodegradation capacities. Notably, PBAT exhibited heightened susceptibility to degradation by the screened bacterial population.

Abstract:Synthetic plastics are pivotal in our current lifestyle and therefore, its accumulation is a major concern for environment and human health. Petroleum-derived (petro-)polymers such as polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyurethane (PU), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are extremely recalcitrant to natural biodegradation pathways. Some microorganisms with the ability to degrade petro-polymers under in vitro conditions have been isolated and characterized. In some cases, the enzymes expressed by these microbes have been cloned and sequenced. The rate of polymer biodegradation depends on several factors including chemical structures, molecular weights, and degrees of crystallinity. Polymers are large molecules having both regular crystals (crystalline region) and irregular groups (amorphous region), where the latter provides polymers with flexibility. Highly crystalline polymers like polyethylene (95%), are rigid with a low capacity to resist impacts. PET-based plastics possess a high degree of crystallinity (30–50%), which is one of the principal reasons for their low rate of microbial degradation, which is projected to take more than 50 years for complete degraded in the natural environment, and hundreds of years if discarded into the oceans, due to their lower temperature and oxygen availability. The enzymatic degradation occurs in two stages: adsorption of enzymes on the polymer surface, followed by hydro-peroxidation/hydrolysis of the bonds. The sources of plastic-degrading enzymes can be found in microorganisms from various environments as well as digestive intestine of some invertebrates. Microbial and enzymatic degradation of waste petro-plastics is a promising strategy for depolymerization of waste petro-plastics into polymer monomers for recycling, or to covert waste plastics into higher value bioproducts, such as biodegradable polymers via mineralization. The objective of this review is to outline the advances made in the microbial degradation of synthetic plastics and, overview the enzymes involved in biodegradation.

Abstract:Nano-carbon such as carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene has been widely studied in this decade. We investigated the fabrication of nano-carbon dispersed film by wet process in this study. The CNT dispersed thin films were coated using spinner. Graphene films were made by dipping the CNT coated glass plate in KMnO4. The films were observed by an atomic force microscopy and a transmission electron microscopy. The UV-VIS-IR optical absorption of nano-carbon solution was also studied.

Abstract:One of the most pressing environmental problems contemporary civilizations confront is the ever-increasing amount of plastic waste. Because of their impact on every living thing, these wastes are seen as a major issue on a global scale. To counteract the harmful environmental effects caused by conventional disposal methods, it is critical to show that eco-friendly alternatives are viable. Biodegradation is one of the best eco-friendly methods for removing plastic waste. In this study, we aimed to identify bacteria from sewage wastewater treatment plants (SWWs) that could degrade low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Bacterial strains isolated from sewerage wastewater were incubated for 120 days in 50 mL of minimal salt media (MSM) containing 60 mg of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). After four months, our research revealed that Bacillus tropicus (SH4) demonstrated significant potential, degrading the LDPE up to 21.6%. We observed the changes after biodegradation using FTIR, GC-MS, and SEM analysis. In conclusion, microorganisms extracted from sewage wastewater possess the ability to mitigate plastic contamination in aquatic ecosystems. Future proteomics and genome investigations are necessary to elucidate the enzymes and metabolic processes implicated in plastic breakdown.

Abstract:This report shows by light microscopy the appearance of secondary neurulation separated from primary neurulation and its developmental fate in the spinal cord of mice exposed to retinoic acid in utero. The embryos and fetuses were derived from pregnant mice (ICR strain) given 60, 40, or 0 mg/kg of retinoic acid in olive oil on day 8 of gestation orally and killed 1, 2, or 10 days later. Separation of the primary neural fold from the secondary neural tube was seen in 9- and 10-day-old embryos: the caudal part of the neuroepithelium of the primary neural fold was disarranged with non-closed posterior neuropore, and underneath it the secondary neural tissue extended caudally with abnormal notochord. At term, fetuses showed spina bifida, including myeloschisis, myelocele, and diplomyelia (diastematomyelia) with abnormal distribution of ganglionic cells. These cord lesions were located between the third lumbar and second coccygeal levels. The former two cord anomalies were associated with diplomyelia and split the dorsal and ventral portions of the spinal cord with an overlapping zone between the third lumbar and third sacral levels. These findings suggest that the separation from primary neurulation is due to the lesions in both primary neural folds and notochord induced by retinoic acid and that the spinal cord caudal to the third lumbar level originates from both neuroectoderm and mesenchyme-like cells while that caudal to the third sacral level originates from mesenchyme-like cells only.
Screening the Efficacy of a Microbial Consortium of Bacteria and Fungi Isolated from Different Environmental Samples for the Degradation of LDPE/TPS Films

Abstract:In this study, a screening of the efficacy of a microbial consortium of bacteria and fungi isolated from activated sludge, river sediment, and compost for the degradation of LDPE/TPS was performed. According to the morphological and biochemical characterization, eight bacteria, Bacillus sonorensis, Bacillus subtilis, Lysinibacillus massiliensis, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus indicus, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus cereus, and Pseudomonas alcaligenes, five molds, Aspergillus sp. 1, Aspergillus sp. 2, Trichoderma sp., Rhizopus sp., Penicillium sp., and Alternaria sp., and a yeast, Candida parapsilosis, were identified. The first experiment E1 was inoculated with microorganisms isolated from activated sludge and river sediment, and E2 with microorganisms isolated from compost. In both experiments, different types of polymeric materials, low density polyethylene (E1-1 and E2-1), thermoplastic starch (E1-2 and E2-2), low density polyethylene + thermoplastic starch (E1-3 and E2-3), low density polyethylene + thermoplastic starch + styrene-ethylene-styrene (E1-4 and E2-4) were added. The obtained results, weight loss, SEM, and FTIR analysis showed that the microorganisms in both experiments were able to degrade polymeric materials. The mixed culture of microorganisms in experiments E1-2 and E2-2 completely degraded TPS (thermoplastic starch). The percent weight losses of LDPE, LDPE+20% TPS, and LDPE+20% TPS+SEBS in experiment E1 were 3.3184%, 14.1152%, and 16.0062% and in experiment E2 were 3.9625%, 20.4520% and 21.9277%, respectively. SEM microscopy shows that the samples with a LDPE matrix exhibited moderate surface degradation and negligible oxidative degradation under the given conditions. FTIR/ATR data demonstrate that degradation was more intense in E2 than in E1.

Abstract:The resiliency of plastic products against microbial degradation in natural environment often creates devastating changes for humans, plants, and animals on the earth's surface. Biodegradation of plastics using indigenous bacteria may serve as a critical approach to overcome this resulting environmental stress. In the present work, a polyethylene degrading bacterium Alcaligenes faecalis strain ISJ128 (Accession No. MK968769) was isolated from partially degraded polyethylene film buried in the soil at plastic waste disposal site. The biodegradation studies were conducted by employing various methods such as hydrophobicity assessment of the strain ISJ128, measurement of viability and total protein content of bacterial biofilm attached to the polyethylene surface. The proliferation of bacterial cells on polyethylene film, as indicated by high growth response in terms of protein content (85.50 μg mL −1 ) and viability (10 10 CFU mL −1 ), proposed reasonable suitability of our strain A. faecalis ISJ128 toward polyethylene degradation. The results of biodegradation assay revealed significant degradation (10.40%) of polyethylene film within a short period of time (i.e., 60 days), whereas no signs of degradation were seen in control PE film. A. faecalis strain ISJ128 also demonstrated a removal rate of 0.0018 day −1 along with half-life of 462 days. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies not only displayed changes on polyethylene surface but also altered level of intensity of functional groups and an increase in the carbonyl indexes justifying the degradation of polyethylene film due to bacterial activity. In addition, the secondary structure prediction (M fold software) of 16SrDNA proved the stable nature of the bacterial strain, thereby reflecting the profound scope of A. faecalis strain ISJ128 as a potential degrader for the eco-friendly disposal of polyethylene waste.

Abstract:A significant amount of electronic obsoletes or electronic waste (e-waste) is being generated globally each year; of these, ~20% of obsolete electronic items have plastic components. Current remediation practices for e-waste have several setbacks due to its negative impact on the environment, agro-ecosystem, and human health. Therefore, comparative biodegradation studies of e-waste plastics by monoculture Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PE10 and bacterial consortium consisting of Achromobacter insolitus strain PE2 (MF943156), Acinetobacter nosocomialis strain PE5 (MF943157), Pseudomonas lalkuanensis PE8 (CP043311), and Stenotrophomonas pavanii strain PE15 (MF943160) were carried out in situ . Biological treatment of e-waste with these candidates in soil ecosystems has been analyzed through diversified analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric-derivative thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTG-DTA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both P. aeruginosa strain PE10 and the bacterial consortium have a tremendous ability to accelerate the biodegradation process in the natural environment. However, FTIR analysis implied that the monoculture had better efficacy than the consortium, and it was consistent until the incubation period used for the study. Some polymeric bonds such as ν C=C and δ C-H were completely removed, and ν C=C ring stretching, ν asym C–O–C, ν sym C–H, etc. were introduced by strain PE10. Furthermore, thermal analysis results validated the structural deterioration of e-waste as the treated samples showed nearly two-fold weight loss ( W L ; 6.8%) than the untreated control (3.1%) at comparatively lower temperatures. SEM images provided the details of surface disintegrations. Conclusively, individual monoculture P. aeruginosa strain PE10 could be explored for e-waste bio-recycling in agricultural soil ecosystems thereby reducing the cost, time, and management of bioformulation in addition to hazardous pollutant reduction.

You can register here Plastics play a crucial role in modern industries; however, their resistance to natural degradation contributes to environmental pollution, and microplastics pose a health threat. The hydrophobic nature of microplastics poses a considerable challenge, rendering them resistant to dissolving in water. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of the microbial biodegradation capabilities of polystyrene in solid and liquid states. Polystyrene in its solid foam form, along with polystyrene converted into a liquid state using ethyl-ester oil, was biodegraded by microorganisms. Subsequently, the liquid plastic was re-extracted into its solid form, and the degree of degradation was assessed using weight loss measurement, XPS, FT-IR, GPC, and TGA. Liquid-state polystyrene exhibited a higher degradation rate than that reported previously. Furthermore, liquid polystyrene undergoes more pronounced oxidation than its solid counterpart, leading to an increased oxygen atom ratio. Chemical structure analysis highlighted the distinct formation of -OH and C=O functional groups in the liquid state compared to those in the solid state. Additionally, notable changes in the molecular weight and thermal stability of polystyrene were observed during biodegradation in the liquid state. This study suggests that a heterogeneous reaction (solid plastic-liquid medium) might impede plastic biodegradation, while indicating the potential to enhance the degradation efficiency through a homogeneous reaction (liquid plastic-liquid medium). The follow-up study identifies appropriate solvents and optimizes cultivation conditions, offering potential to enhance the efficiency of biological plastic degradation.

Abstract:Plastic waste pollution has become a global crisis, with millions of tons of plastic expected to accumulate in landfills and in natural environments, posing a serious threat to wildlife and human health. As current recycling methods remain inefficient, there is an urgent need for innovative enzymatic solutions to break down plastics and enable a circular economy approach. In this study, we explore the plastic-degrading potential of microorganisms enriched from activated sludge (AS) sourced from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP)—a known microplastic-contaminated industrial niche. Five microbial consortia (i.e., microbiomes) were enriched under selective pressure using low-carbon conditions and high concentrations of polyester polymers, including post-consumer PET, post-consumer PLA, and virgin PLA. Enrichment was performed for 100 days at 37 °C and 50 °C, followed by microbiomes isolation and metagenomic analysis to identify plastic-active bacteria and their enzymes. The results revealed that PLA polymers, but not post-consumer PET, were effectively degraded by the microbiomes, as confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), showing significant molecular weight reduction compared to the abiotic controls. Microbial community analysis highlighted a distinct enrichment profile driven by the polymer composition and the temperature. At 50 °C, the Bacillales order became the predominant population, whereas at 37 °C, a more diverse community within the Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria phyla were selected. Nonetheless, the enriched microbial communities at both temperatures included phyla with members known for polyester degradation. Moreover, at 50 °C, enrichment of putative PET/PLA hydrolases was also observed. These findings suggest that AS microorganisms are a reservoir of polyester-active enzymes, particularly PLA-depolymerases, and hold promise for advancing biotechnological strategies to mitigate plastic pollution through re- and up-cycling.
