Abstract:Performance of a laboratory-scale integrated baffled reactor for the treatment of raw palm oil mill effluent (POME) was investigated. Initially, the reactor was fed with diluted POME (COD = 1,830 mg/L and OLR = 0.46 g COD/L day) which was then increased gradually to actual concentration (COD = 45,500 mg/L and OLR = 11.38 g COD/L day). Reactor operation was studied in two different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (4 and 6 days) using POME with no effluent-recycled feed and after alkalinity supplementation. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 79 and 83 % at an HRT of 4 and 6 days were attained at the highest organic loading rate (OLR = 11.38 g COD/L day). The presence of Arcella-like and Metopus-like species and pH profile in the bioreactor’s compartments imply that anaerobic system is active in the reactor throughout the study. Use of methanogen-enriched inocula, smooth OLR augmentation, and appropriate separation of acidogens and methanogens in the reactor were the reasons for satisfactory performances of the system.

Bioremediation of palm oil mill effluent (POME) using indigenous Meyerozyma guilliermondii

Abstract:Despite being a key Malaysian economic contributor, the oil palm industry generates a large quantity of environmental pollutant known as palm oil mill effluent (POME). Therefore, the need to remediate POME has drawn a mounting interest among environmental scientists. This study has pioneered the application of Meyerozyma guilliermondii with accession number (MH 374161) that was isolated indigenously in accessing its potential to degrade POME. This strain was able to treat POME in shake flask experiments under aerobic condition by utilising POME as a sole source of carbon. However, it has also been shown that the addition of suitable carbon and nitrogen sources has significantly improved the degradation potential of M. guilliermondii. The remediation of POME using this strain resulted in a substantial reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 72%, total nitrogen of 49.2% removal, ammonical nitrogen of 45.1% removal, total organic carbon of 46.6% removal, phosphate of 60.6% removal, and 92.4% removal of oil and grease after 7 days of treatment period. The strain also exhibited an extracellular lipase activity which promotes better wastewater treatment. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses have specifically shown that M. guilliermondii strain can degrade hydrocarbons, fatty acids, and phenolic compounds present in the POME. Ultimately, this study has demonstrated that M. guilliermondii which was isolated indigenously exhibits an excellent degrading ability. Therefore, this strain is suitable to be employed in the remediation of POME, contributing to a safe discharge of the effluent into the environment.

Abstract:POME is the most voluminous waste generated from palm oil milling activities. The discharge of POME into the environment without any treatment processing could inflict an undesirable hazard to humans and the environment due to its high amount of toxins, organic, and inorganic materials. The treatment of POME prior to discharge into the environment is utmost required to protect the liability for human health and the environment. Biological treatments are preferable due to eco-friendly attributes that are technically and economically feasible. The goal of this review article is to highlight the current state of development in the biological processing technologies for POME treatment. These biological processing technologies are conducted in the presence of fungi, bacteria, microalgae, and a consortium of microorganisms. Numerous microbes are listed to identify the most efficient strain by monitoring the BOD, COD, working volume of the reactor, and treatment time. The most effective processing technology for POME treatment uses an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor with the COD value of 99%, hydraulic retention time of 7.2 days, and a working volume of 4.7 litres. Biological processing technologies are mooted as an efficient and sustainable management practice of POME waste.

Abstract:Anaerobic microbial communities and their functions can provide information about waste management practices, as well as reveal novel degradation metabolisms that can be utilized in wastewater treatment. This study was aimed towards sustainable palm oil industry with assessing the microbial evolution during the dark fermentative processing of palm oil anaerobic sludge and palm oil mill effluent (POME) in batch-mode over two-months with a distinct incubation time of 24 h. The process was designed using response surface methodology (RSM) by acclimatization of inoculum using POME with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 36 g-COD/l. The effect of mesophilic and thermophilic conditions and pH on COD removal, hydrogen content, and hydrogen yield (HY) were investigated. A potential sample was selected for microbial analysis after the first and second months of operation based on the maximum outputs achieved throughout the experiment. The bacterial community at pH 5.6 and temperature 55 °C with maximum hydrogen content of 64.13 %, and HY of 0.93 ml H 2 /g-COD was dominated by three phyla: Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidota. The results obtained from high throughput pyrosequencing showed that how acclimatization period affects the microbial community structure towards Firmicutes phylum, which includes the majority of hydrogen-producing microorganisms.

Abstract:Flourishing oil palm agroindustry inevitably produces voluminous pollutant-laden palm oil mill effluent (POME), which often treated by obsolete open ponding. By introducing foreign microbes, POME bioconversions confer simultaneous valorization and remediation of POME; however, environmental-sensitive microbes are prone to microbial inhibitions, which can upset the bioconversion. Herein, up to eight possible microbial inhibitions of POME bioconversions are identified and detailed after holistic review of multitudinous bioconversion routes. Potential microbial inhibitions include oil encapsulation, chemical inhibition, physical disruption, strict oxygen preference (O2 toxicity/deficiency), extreme temperature (cold/thermal denaturation), extreme pH (acid/alkali toxicity), extreme salinity, and photoinactivation. To lessen microbial inhibitions in POME bioconversions, constructive mitigation strategies are classified into three aspects, viz. substrate aspects (debris removal, supplementation, dilution, pretreatments, & co-substrates addition), microbial aspects (mixed cultures, immobilization, granulation, & gradual acclimation), and process aspects (thermophilic anaerobic/mesophilic aerobic pairs, continuous operation, pH control/adjustment, biosludge recycling/entrapment, & additional bioreactor). In authors' opinion, genetically modified microbes (GMM) application in POME bioconversions might be a promising research direction. Aforesaid superbugs can be engineered for efficient bioremediation, rapid proliferation, and high adaptability, which likely resolve all the aforesaid microbial inhibitions via genetic engineering.

Abstract:The rapid increase in demand for renewable energy has led to a need for more efficient and effective ways to produce biogas from palm oil mill effluent (POME), which is rich in biological and chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD). Despite its potential as a source of biogas, POME is not always effectively utilized in biogas production due to a lack of optimization of the treatment process. This study aims to address this issue by identifying the critical parameters affecting biogas production from POME and optimizing the process for maximum biogas yield and COD removal. This study employed comparative analysis and response surface methodology to optimize the performance of palm oil mill effluent (POME)-based biogas plants in Malaysia. Historical data from three commercial POME-based biogas plants in Malaysia were analyzed to identify the most critical parameters for biogas yield and COD removal. Response surface methodology, using Box–Behnken design and Design-Expert software, was then used to optimize these parameters. Sensitivity analysis was performed to interpret the impact of parameters on biogas production, with Organic Loading Rate (OLR) found to be the most critical factor for methane yield. The results showed that the optimum conditions for maximum methane production were OLR of 1.23 kg/m3·day, inlet Total Solids (TS) of 46,370 mg/L, pH of 4.5, and temperature of 45.4 °C, resulting in a 39.6% increase in methane yield (0.335 m3 CH4/kgCODremoved) and a 1.1% increase in COD removal (93.4%).

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the properties of low temperature degradation (LTD) of dental Y-TZP by experiments. METHODS According to ISO 13356-2008 standards, 72 blanks of Y-TZP were sintered at different temperature (1 400 °C,1 450 °Cor 1 530 °C) and in different heat preserving time(2 h or 5 h), and then the specimens were grounded and polished. The blanks were divided into 12 groups according to the different sintering temperature, heat preserving time and aging time. The surface of specimens was observed by SEM to evaluate the grain size of specimens; Each group of specimens was exposed to 140 °C hydrothermal aging environment for 0 h, 5 h or 24 h. After aging, XRD analysis was undertaken to determine the amount of phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic for each groups. At last, the biaxial flexural strengths of all specimens were measured and calculated. RESULTS The SEM showed that the grain size of each group of Y-TZP increased with the increase of sintering temperature and heat preserving time, however, all of them were below 1 μm. The XRD analysis showed the contents of monoclinic of each group varied with different sintering temperatures, heat preserving times and aging time. The flexural strength of 24 h aging groups declined significantly; but that of 5 h aging group showed increase or decrease according to the different sintering temperatures and heat preserving times. CONCLUSION Different sintering procedures to some extent may affect the Y-TZP aging properties.

Abstract:The voluminous nature of palm oil mill effluent (POME) is directly associated with environmental hazards and could be turned into biorefinery products. The POME, rich in BOD, COD, and oil and grease, with few hazardous materials such as siloxanes, fatty acid methyl ester, and phenolic compounds that may significantly increase the risk of violating the effluent quality standards. Recently, the application of chemical and biological risk assessment that can use electrochemical sensors and microalgae-like species has gained paramount attention towards its remediation. This review describes the existing risk assessment for POME and recommends a novel assessment approach using fish species including invasive ones as suitable for identifying the toxicants. Various physico-chemical and biological treatments such as adsorption, coagulation-flocculation, photo-oxidation, solar-assisted extraction, anaerobic digestion, integrated anaerobic-aerobic, and microalgae cultivation has been investigated. This paper offers an overview of anaerobic technologies, with particular emphasis on advanced bioreactors and their prospects for industrial-level applications. To illustrate, palmitic acid and oleic acid, the precursors of fatty acid methyl ester found in POME pave the way to produce biodiesel with 91.45%. Although there are some challenges in attaining production at an economic scale, this review offers some opportunities that could help in overcoming these challenges.

Abstract:Nowadays, the water pollution is leading issue due to palm oil mill effluent (POME), waste from palm oil production is a big problem to Malaysia which is largest palm oil producers. POME containing large amount of chemical oxygen demand (COD) which can cause severe pollution to the environment especially water. This present study designed for culturing green algae (Chlorella sp.) isolated from Pantai Balok, Kuantan which is most common microalgae with palm oil mill effluent (POME). Chlorella sp. was cultured using BG-11 medium with the addition of POME as experiment and without POME as control. The POME responsible for the growth of green algae is studied by measurement of the growth rate, total cell count and chemical oxygen demand (COD) for both conditions. The composition for control and experiment is also measured and determined by using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS). From the results, it is observed that the total cell count and growth rate of Chlorella sp. greater in presence of POME since the green microalgae absorbs the essential nutrients from the POME as their nutrients. GCMS revealed that the difference in composition for both the conditions. Results concluded that several COD also vigorously deplete with the help of green algae digestion. Cultivation of Chlorella sp. in POME will help in future water pollution treatment.

Abstract:Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is the wastewater produced during the palm oil sterilization process, which contains substantial amounts of nutrients and phosphorous that are harmful to the environment. High BOD and COD of POME are as high as 100,000 mg/L, which endanger the environment. Effective pre-treatment of POME is required before disposal. As microalgae have the ability of biosorption on nutrients and phosphorous to perform photosynthesis, they can be utilized as a sustainable POME treatment operation, which contributes to effective biofuel production. Microalgae species C. pyrenoidosa has shown to achieve 68% lipid production along with 71% nutrient reduction in POME. In this study, a brief discussion about the impacts of POME that will affect the environment is presented. Additionally, the potential of microalgae in treating POME is evaluated along with its benefits. Furthermore, the condition of microalgae growth in the POME is also assessed to study the suitable condition for microalgae to be cultivated in. Moreover, experimental studies on characteristics and performance of microalgae are being evaluated for their feasibility. One of the profitable applications of POME treatment using microalgae is biofuel production, which will be discussed in this review. However, with the advantages brought from cultivating microalgae in POME, there are also some concerns, as microalgae will cause pollution if they are not handled well, as discussed in the last section of this paper.

Abstract:Palm oil mill effluent (POME) poses a significant environmental challenge in Malaysia, necessitating effective wastewater management. This study explores innovative methods for treating POME, focusing on sustainable biohydrogen production. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the optimum conditions for substrate pretreatment using hydrothermal, a vital step in the bioconversion of biomass to hydrogen. Biohydrogen production was determined through a dark fermentation process using a Box-Behnken design to optimise the efficiency of substrate pretreatment temperature, holding time and POME percentage. This study found that the optimal conditions for hydrothermal pretreatment were achieved at 212 °C, with a 30 min holding time, and utilising 100 % POME. Under these conditions, the study performed a notable 78 % of chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency (COD rem.eff ). Additionally, the process yielded 242 ml of total biohydrogen volume, with the final pH stabilised at 6.7. Microbial analysis showed that Chloroflexota phylum is dominant in the optimum sample, with the presence of T78 and Clostridia species. This research pioneers the hydrothermal pretreatment method for biohydrogen production, demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing COD rem.eff and hydrogen yield, thus providing a sustainable solution to palm oil waste management.

Abstract:Oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) are the most abundant, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly lignocellulosic biomass in Malaysia. Investigations on the microbial diversity of decaying OPEFB may reveal microbes with complex enzymes that have the potential to enhance the conversion of lignocellulose into second-generation biofuels as well as the production of other value-added products. In the present study, fungal and bacterial diversities in decaying OPEFB were identified using Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene and V4 region of the 18S rRNA gene. Fungal diversity in decaying OPEFB was dominated by the phylum Ascomycota (14.43%), while most of the bacterial sequences retrieved belonged to Proteobacteria (76.71%). Three bacterial strains isolated from decaying OPEFB, designated as S18, S20, and S36, appeared to grow with extracted OPEFB-lignin and Kraft lignin (KL) as the sole carbon source. 16S rRNA gene sequencing identified the 3 isolates as Paenibacillus sp.. The molecular weight distribution of KL before and after degradation showed significant depolymerization when treated with bacterial strains S18, S20, and S36. The presence of low-molecular-weight lignin-related compounds, such as vanillin and 2-methoxyphenol derivatives, which were detected by a GC-MS analysis, confirmed the KL-degrading activities of isolated Paenibacillus strains.

Abstract:Palm oil mill effluent (POME) has high chemical oxygen demand (COD), thus requires effective treatments to environmentally benign levels before discharge. In this study, immobilized microalgae cells are used for removing pollutants in treated palm oil mill effluent (TPOME). Different ratios of microalgae beads to TPOME concentration were examined at 1:2.5, 1:5, and 1:10. The biomass concentration and COD removal were measured through a standard method. The color of the cultivated microalgae beads changed from light green to darker green after the POME treatment for 9 days, hence demonstrating that microalgae cells were successfully grown inside the beads with pH up to 9.84. The immobilized cells cultivated in the POME at 1:10 achieved a higher biomass concentration of 1.268 g/L and a COD removal percentage of 72% than other treatment ratios. The increment of the ratio of microalgae cells beads to POME concentration did not cause any improvement in COD removal efficiency. This was due to the inhibitory effect of self-shading resulting in the slow growth rate of microalgae cells which responsible for low COD removal. Therefore, this system could be a viable technology for simultaneous biomass production and POME treatment. This will contribute to research efforts toward the development of new and improved technologies in treating POME.
Bioaugmentation coupled with phytoremediation for the removal of phenolic compounds and color from treated palm oil mill effluent

Abstract:The potential for coupling bioaugmentation with phytoremediation to simultaneously treat and utilize treated palm oil mill effluent (TPOME) in animal feed production was determined from a reduction in phenolic compounds and color in soil leachates, as well as from an increased yield of pasture grass. Two phenol-degrading bacteria-Methylobacterium sp. NP3 and Acinetobacter sp. PK1-were inoculated into the Brachiaria humidicola rhizosphere before the application of TPOME. A pot study showed that the soil with both grass and inoculated bacteria had the highest dephenolization and decolorization efficiencies, with a maximum capability of removing 70% from 587 mg total phenolic compounds added and 73% from 4438 color units during ten TPOME application cycles. The results corresponded to increases in the number of phenol-degrading bacteria and the grass yield. In a field study, this treatment was able to remove 46% from 21,453 mg total phenolic compounds added, with a maximum color removal efficiency of 52% from 5105 color units, while the uninoculated plots removed about 24-39% and 29-46% of phenolic compounds and color, respectively. The lower treatment performance was probably due to the increased TPOME concentrations. Based on the amounts of phenolic compounds, protein, and crude fiber in the grass biomass, the inoculated TPOME-treated grass had a satisfactory nutritional quality and digestibility for use as animal feed.
Removal of Nutrients by Using Green Microalgae from Lab-Scale Treated Palm Oil Mill Effluent

Abstract:The use of microalgae for the removal of contaminants such as total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and other pollutants from palm oil mill effluent (POME) has recently received much attention. This study aimed to investigate the impact of POME as a nutrient on microalgal growth and the rate at which nutrients were removed. Three green microalgae species were isolated from Penang, Malaysia’s palm oil mill. The polyphasic approach, which combines morphological and molecular observations, was used for species identification. The three green microalgae were identified as Chlorella sorokiniana, Scenedesmus quadricauda, and Chlorococcum oleofaciens. All three green microalgae were cultivated in 25%, 50%, and 75% (v/v) of lab-scale palm oil mill effluent (LABT-POME) to investigate the growth of these three green microalgae in 100 mL of BBM. Under a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the morphological changes of those three green microalgae (before and after cultivation in 25%, 50%, and 75% dilution of (LABT-POME)) were observed. When cultivated in LABT-POME, C. oleofaciens showed the highest growth rate compared to the other two species of green microalgae. C. oleofaciens was able to remove more than 90% of total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and ammonia nitrogen from LABT-POME, as well as minimise soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) by about 65%. The growth of C. oleofaciens was well fitted to the Verhulst growth kinetic model with an R2 value of 0.99 and a growth rate of 0.3195 day−1 (d−1). The results of this study show the ability of newly isolated green microalgae to remove nutrients (TP, TN, NH3–N, and SCOD) from POME, which could be used as an effective and environmentally friendly method to remove pollutants.

Abstract:Safe disposal of effluent from palm oil production poses an environmental concern. The highly polluting effluent is customarily treated by unsustainable open ponds with low efficiency, direct emissions, and massive land use. This study looks into an application of integrated anaerobic/oxic/oxic scheme for treatment of high strength palm oil mill effluent. The anaerobic reactors functioned as a prime degrader that removed up to 97.5% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), while the aerobic reactors played a role of an effluent polisher that further reduced the COD. Their complementing roles resulted in a remarkable removal of 99.7%. Assessment of emission mitigation and biogas energy revealed that yearly energy of 53.2 TJ, emissions reduction of 239,237 tCO2 and revenue of USD 1.40 millions can be generated out of electricity generation and heating. The integrated scheme provides a viable and sustainable treatment of the high strength palm oil mill effluent.

Abstract:Effluent from palm oil mill processing is a major concern due its properties and characteristics that highly contributed to water pollution. This study reported on POME treatment by a semi-continuous treatment system consisting of coagulation, sedimentation and filtration processes in the presence of a by-product coagulant (copperas combined with lime). The treatment was conducted for different types of filter medias (FMs): a) FM 1: sand+activated carbon and b) FM 2: sand+ceramic ring) and various retention times (RT) from 1/2 to 2 h. The treatment resulted in different removal efficiencies of turbidity, colour, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS) for secondary and tertiary POME samples. With semi-continuous treatment, the pollutants in the secondary POME sample decreased, resulting in the removal efficiency of 57.34% for turbidity, 95.16% for colour, 82.08% for COD and 83.23% for TSS. Meanwhile, the results of the tertiary sample were 54.81%, 81.08%, 78.05% and 68.51% for turbidity, colour, COD and TSS removal respectively. The statistical analysis of ANOVA (p-value<0.05) indicated that the data was statistically significant with the FM 1 as a media filter. As a result, a semi-continous chemical-physical treatment system may provide information in efficient POME treatment.

Abstract:Oryctes rhinoceros is an important pest in oil palm plants attacking plants and immature plants. Utilization of oil palm empty fruit bunches in the field causes the spread and increase of O. rhinoceros attacks. The phenol compound and phenyl phenol released by decomposed oil palm empty fruit bunch attract O. rhinoceros to the organic material. The process of decomposition of oil palm empty fruit bunches 6-9 months resulted in an increase in pest population. O. rhinoceros larvae have symbiotic bacteria in their intestines and produce hydrolytic enzymes that have the potential and can be developed to degrade oil palm empty fruit bunch waste that is used as a composting starter. composting. The materials used in this study were larvae of O. rhinoceros instar 3, culture media of NA, NB, fungi, trichoderma, yeast and other materials that support the research. Tools used in scalpels, measuring cups, microscopes and others. The study was conducted at the Plant Disease Laboratory and Greenhouse, Agrotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan from June 2019 to October 2019. This research used a Non Factorial Complete Randomized Design with 9 treatments and 3 replications. The results of the study were obtained 2 bacterial species namely Achromobacter SP and Bacillus SP then made as a composting activator. The use of this symbiont bacteria influences the physical and chemical factors of compost produced. As for physically obtained compost color in the treatment of P8 7.5 YR 2/1 (Black) while P0 7.5 YR 3/2 (Dark Brown). Compost has a soil aroma and temperature. Material reduction during composting from all treatments averaged 42.14%. The best C / N ratio is in the treatment of P7 (Bacillus + molasses) that is equal to 14.78% and the composting process lasts for 10 weeks.

Abstract:By means of biorefinery, biogas production through anaerobic digestion is one of the most common treatments of wastewater in the palm oil industry. After biogas production, the treated palm oil mill effluent (POME) is generally discharged into the environment. However, certain level of hazardous compounds still exists in the treated wastewater, which can lead to the pollution of water bodies. In this study, we have investigated the dynamics of volatile organic acids dwelling in consecutive POME treatment lagoons as well as identified, and categorized, microbial species responsible for the treatment process. Bacteria and methanogens, both hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic, related to methane production were identified using mcr A and 16S rRNA genes specific primers. Two hydrogenotrophic methanogens, Methanoculleus marisnigri and Methanoculleus chikugoensis , were found abundant in accordance with high formate concentration throughout the process of anaerobic digestion. This study has also isolated eight consortia of microbes that yielded different methane productions by utilizing formate as the substrate in the synthetic medium. The consortia of a group, containing M. marisnigri , M. chikugoensis , uncultured bacteria , Aminobacterium sp. , and Ruminobacillus xylanolyticum , produced the highest methane yield of 259 mL/g COD after 25 days of incubation in the laboratory. The findings from this study are contributing to optimize and increase biogas production in POME, which will allow higher efficiency in palm oil mill wastewater treatment.
