Abstract:Hydrogenation is a promising technique to prepare black TiO2 (H-TiO2) for solar water splitting, however, there remain limitations such as severe preparation conditions and underexplored hydrogenation mechanisms to inefficient hydrogenation and poor photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance to be overcome for practical applications. Here, a room-temperature and rapid plasma hydrogenation (RRPH) strategy that realizes low-energy hydrogen ions of below 250 eV to fabricate H-TiO2 nanorods with controllable disordered shell, outperforming incumbent hydrogenations, is reported. The mechanisms of efficient RRPH and enhanced PEC activity are experimentally and theoretically unraveled. It is discovered that low-energy hydrogen ions with fast subsurface transport kinetics and shallow penetration depth features, enable them to directly penetrate TiO2 via unique multiple penetration pathways to form controllable disordered shell and suppress bulk defects, ultimately leading to improved PEC performance. Furthermore, the hydrogenation-property experiments reveal that the enhanced PEC activity is mainly ascribed to increasing band bending and bulk defect suppression, compared to reported H-TiO2, a superior photocurrent density of 2.55 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 V-RHE is achieved. These findings demonstrate a sustainable strategy which offers great promise of TiO2 and other oxides to achieve further-improved material properties for broad practical applications.
A H2O2 Oxidation Approach to Ti3C2/TiO2 for Efficient Photocatalytic Removal of Distinct Organic Pollutants in Water.

Abstract:To develop versatile photocatalysts for efficient degradation of distinct organic pollutants in water is a continuous pursuit in environment remediation. Herein, we directly oxidize Ti3C2 MXene with hydrogen peroxide to produce C-doped anatase TiO2 nanowires with aggregates maintaining a layered architecture of the MXene. The Ti3C2 MXene provides a titanium source for TiO2, a carbon source for in situ C-doping, and templates for nanowire aggregates. Under UV light illumination, the optimized Ti3C2/TiO2 exhibits a reaction rate constant 1.5 times that of the benchmark P25 TiO2 nanoparticles, toward photocatalytic degradations of trace phenol in water. The mechanism study suggests that photogenerated holes play key roles on the phenol degradation, either directly oxidizing phenol molecules or in an indirect way through oxidizing first the surface hydroxyl groups. The unreacted Ti3C2 MXene, although with trace amounts, is supposed to facilitate electron transfer, which inhibits charge recombination. The unique nanostructure of layered aggregates of nanowires, abundant surface oxygen vacancies arising from the carbon doping, and probably the Ti3C2/TiO2 heterojunction guarantee the high photocatalytic efficiency toward removals of organic pollutants in water. The photocatalyst also exhibits an activity superior to, or at least comparable to, the benchmark P25 TiO2 toward photodegradations for typical persistent organic pollutants of phenol, dye molecule of rhodamine B, antibiotic of tetracycline, pharmaceutical wastewater of ofloxacin, and pesticide of N,N-dimethylformamide, when evaluated in total organic carbon removal.
Octahedral Shaped PbTiO 3 -TiO 2 Nanocomposites for High-Efficiency Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production.

Abstract:In this work, octahedral shaped PbTiO-TiO nanocomposites have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, where perovskite ferroelectric PbTiO nanooctahedra were employed as substrate. The microstructures of the composites were investigated systemically by using XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was revealed that anantase TiO nanocrystals with a size of about 5 nm are dispersed on the surface of the {111} facets of the nanooctahedron crystals. Photocatalytic hydrogen production of the nanocomposites has been evaluated in a methanol alcohol-water solution under UV light enhanced irradiation. The H evolution rate of the nanocomposites increased with an increased loading of TiO on the nanooctahedra. The highest H evolution rate was 630.51 μmol/h with the highest concentration of TiO prepared with 2 mL tetrabutyl titanate, which was about 36 times higher than that of the octahedron substrate. The enhanced photocatalytic reactivity of the nanocomposites is possibly ascribed to the UV light absorption of the nanooctahedral substrates, efficient separation of photo-generated carriers via the interface and the reaction on the surface of the TiO nanocrystals.

Abstract:An efficient photocatalytic reactor to remove pollutants from either water or air relies on highly active photocatalytic thin films on appropriate substrates, which contribute to both light harvesting and pollutant molecules transfer. In this investigation, few-layer titanate nanobelts were deposited on metallic Ti mesh using hydrogen peroxide solution, which were then subjected to a subsequent hot water treatment to achieve crystallized titania nanorod arrays. The three-dimensional arrays of nanorods formed on Ti mesh (three layers overlapped) exhibited an exceptional high efficiency when utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water under UV light illumination, which is 25 times that of P25 film, and even 1.3 times that of P25 nanoparticles in a slurry system. For photodegradation of phenol in water, the three-layer Ti mesh also exhibited a reaction rate constant 6.9 times that of P25 film. The reduced band gap, abundant surface hydroxyl groups, and mixed phase effects arising from the low temperature approach contribute to the high photocatalytic activity.
Hydrogenated TiO2/SrTiO3 porous microspheres with tunable band structure for solar-light photocatalytic H2 and O2 evolution

Abstract:The production of H2 and O2 from solar-light photocatalytic water splitting has attracted significant research attention as a clean and renewable source of energy. In this study, hydrogenated TiO2/SrTiO3 porous microspheres were prepared as a high-performance photocatalyst. Titanium glycerolate and then strontium complex precursors were first prepared via a two-step solvothermal process, then, after calcination in air and subsequent H2/Ar reduction treatments, hydrogenated TiO2/SrTiO3 porous microspheres with controllable defects and band positions were prepared. Several characterization techniques were used to demonstrate that the catalyst heterostructures, the oxygen-vacancy content, and the unique porous structures synergistically enhanced the visible-light harvesting abilities and photogenerated charge separation, and resulted in improved photocatalytic efficiency for H2 and O2 evolution. As expected, the optimum treatment conditions provided hydrogenated TiO2/SrTiO3 porous microspheres that showed excellent photocatalytic activity with H2 and O2 evolution rates of 239.97 and 103.79 μmol h−1 (50 mg catalyst, under AM 1.5 irradiation), respectively, which were ca. 5.9 and 6.6 times higher, respectively, than those of solid TiO2/SrTiO3 materials. Thus, this type of hydrogenated TiO2/SrTiO3 porous microsphere catalyst shows great potential as a photocatalyst for solar-energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Nano-sized TiO2 photocatalytic water-splitting technology has great potential for low-cost, environmentally friendly solar-hydrogen production to support the future hydrogen economy. Presently, the solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency is too low for the technology to be economically sound. The main barriers are the rapid recombination of photo-generated electron/hole pairs as well as backward reaction and the poor activation of TiO2 by visible light. In response to these deficiencies, many investigators have been conducting research with an emphasis on effective remediation methods. Some investigators studied the effects of addition of sacrificial reagents and carbonate salts to prohibit rapid recombination of electron/hole pairs and backward reactions. Other research focused on the enhancement of photocatalysis by modification of TiO2 by means of metal loading, metal ion doping, dye sensitization, composite semiconductor, anion doping and metal ion-implantation. This paper aims to review the up-to-date development of the above-mentioned technologies applied to TiO2 photocatalytic hydrogen production. Based on the studies reported in the literature, metal ion-implantation and dye sensitization are very effective methods to extend the activating spectrum to the visible range. Therefore, they play an important role in the development of efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract:TiO2 precursors were treated by plasma technology in three atmospheres (N2, Ar, H2). Interstitial N-doping can be facilely realized in N2 atmosphere, the light absorption range of N2-TiO2 is enlarged, and the surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) are significantly increased. Surface OVs enhance the efficient separation of photogenerated e −/h + pairs in TiO2. The microscopic oxide layer on the surface of TiO2 is destroyed, bringing about Ti3+ defects and formation of more surface OVs in H2 and Ar atmosphere. Ti3+ defects, high concentration of surface OVs and the Ti3+-OVs defect energy level significantly reduce the photogenerated electron excitation energy. The photocatalytic H2 production activity of TiO2 treated via plasma technique in the different atmospheres was evaluated under visible light irradiation. Consequently, the H2 production efficiency on N2-TiO2 is 103.6 umolh−1 g−1, which is 2.1 times, 1.6 times, and 1.3 times of that on the pristine TiO2, H2-TiO2, and Ar-TiO2, respectively. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of H2 generation on N2-TiO2 is 0.08%, which is 1.6 times of that over the reference TiO2 under 420 nm monochromatic light irradiation. The photocatalytic mechanisms for H2 production over all the photocatalysts were discussed according to a series of characterizations.

Abstract:Two similar enzymes with different biosynthetic function in one species have evolved to catalyze two distinct reactions. X-ray structures of both enzymes help reveal their most important differences. The Rauvolfia alkaloid biosynthetic network harbors two O-glucosidases: raucaffricine glucosidase (RG), which hydrolyses raucaffricine to an intermediate downstream in the ajmaline pathway, and strictosidine glucosidase (SG), which operates upstream. RG converts strictosidine, the substrate of SG, but SG does not accept raucaffricine. Now elucidation of crystal structures of RG, inactive RG-E186Q mutant, and its complexes with ligands dihydro-raucaffricine and secologanin reveals that it is the "wider gate" of RG that allows strictosidine to enter the catalytic site, whereas the "slot-like" entrance of SG prohibits access by raucaffricine. Trp392 in RG and Trp388 in SG control the gate shape and acceptance of substrates. Ser390 directs the conformation of Trp392. 3D structures, supported by site-directed mutations and kinetic data of RG and SG, provide a structural and catalytic explanation of substrate specificity and deeper insights into O-glucosidase chemistry.

Abstract:As an environmentally friendly and renewable method for hydrogen production powered by solar energy, photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) using broadband absorbers have received much attention. Here, we report the fabrication and characterization of an ultrabroadband absorber for the photocatalytic HER. The absorber is composed of titanium nitride and titanium dioxide heterostructures deposited onto a porous anodized aluminum oxide template. The absorber shows ultrabroadband absorption in both the visible and near-infrared regions (400–2500 nm), with averages of 99.1% and 80.1%, respectively. Additionally, the presence of the TiO 2 layer within the absorber extends the lifetime of the hot carriers by 2.7 times longer than that without the TiO 2 layer, enhancing the transfer of hot electrons and improving the efficiency of hydrogen production by 1.9 times. This novel ultrabroadband absorber has potential use in advanced photocatalytic HER applications, providing a sustainable and cost-effective route for hydrogen generation from solar energy.

Abstract:Solar-powered photocatalytic H2O2 production is promising for its advantages of being safe, portable, green and energy efficient but challenging to achieve high efficiency, especially in pure water and air conditions. Herein, a titanium dioxide/polyethylenimine/Ag nanoparticle (abbreviated as TiO2/PEI/AgNP) photocatalyst is prepared in a facile manner by electrostatic assembly and in situ polymer reduction, which combines local surface plasmon resonance and photocatalysis to exhibit ultra-fast H2O2 production activity in pure water. The obtained photocatalysts exhibit an unexpectedly high H2O2 production activity (1605 μmol g-1 h-1 under simulated sun light) in air and pure water, which is 24-fold higher than that of pristine rutile TiO2. The TiO2/PEI/AgNP composites simultaneously optimize three parts of photocatalytic H2O2 production: (i) improved charge separation, (ii) captured H+ faster and (iii) blocked direct contact of H2O2 and catalyst. Experimental data and density functional theory calculations prove that the AgNP component can rapidly conduct high-energy electrons generated by themselves and photogenerated electrons generated by TiO2 to reactants. PEI component can capture H+ from pure water faster to promote superoxide radical to generate H2O2 through proton coupling reaction and block direct contact of H2O2 and TiO2 component. This work establishes a paradigm for the rational design of efficient plasmonic photocatalysts via self-assembly and in-situ reduction technologies toward H2O2 production in pure water and air.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct differently exposed crystal surface structures by a novel water-plasma surface modification method to enhance specific photocatalytic reactions. Water plasma treatment of 001-faceted TiO 2 (T001) results in 2-fold and 12-fold increased photoactivity for hydrogen evolution and nitrogen fixation but significantly deteriorates its oxidation capability for photodegrading bisphenol A (BPA) contaminants. In contrast, treating 101-faceted TiO 2 (T101) under the same conditions accelerates the photodegradation of pollutants while weakening the photoreduction activity. Advanced characterizations reveal that water plasma treatment generates oxygen vacancy defects in T001, which can act as electron traps for improving the photoreduction capability. Differently, the surface hydroxyl groups on T101 caused by plasma discharging facilitate the generation of hydroxyl radicals, thus increasing its oxidation capability for contaminant degradation. This study not only sheds light on the relationship between the structure and activity of TiO 2 photocatalysts, but also presents a simple method for modifying a catalyst's active surface sites through water plasma treatment.

Abstract:Highly efficient Pt/TiO2 photocatalyst has been prepared using plasma-enhanced impregnation method. Impregnated 0.5 wt%Pt/TiO2 was treated by plasma followed with thermal calcinations and hydrogen reduction. The catalyst characterizations show that Pt is highly dispersed with a size of 3–5 nm. UV–Vis reflection spectrum suggests it a high photosensitivity in near UV region. Such plasma prepared catalyst exhibits a much higher activity and better metal stability for hydrogen generation from methanol/water mixture, compared to the catalyst prepared conventionally. This highly efficient photocatalyst should have extensive applications in photocatalytic processes.

Abstract:Black TiO2 attracts enormous attention due to its large solar absorption and induced excellent photocatalytic activity. Herein, a new approach assisted by hydrogen plasma to synthesize unique H-doped black titania with a core/shell structure (TiO2@TiO2-xHx) is presented, superior to the high H-2-pressure process (under 20 bar for five days). The black titania possesses the largest solar absorption (approximate to 83%), far more than any other reported black titania (the record (high-pressure): approximate to 30%). H doping is favorable to eliminate the recombination centers of light-induced electrons and holes. High absorption and low recombination ensure the excellent photocatalytic activity for the black titania in the photo-oxidation of organic molecules in water and the production of hydrogen. The H-doped amorphous shell is proposed to play the same role as Ag or Pt loading on TiO2 nanocrystals, which induces the localized surface plasma resonance and black coloration. Photocatalytic water splitting and cleaning using TiO2-xHx is believed to have a bright future for sustainable energy sources and cleaning environment.

Plasmonic Au–TiO2 interactions for augmented photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:The overreliance on non-renewable energy sources like fossil fuels has led to severe energy crises and environmental pollution, hindering sustainable development. Harnessing solar energy for water splitting through semiconductor photocatalysts offers a promising solution. Titanium dioxide (TiO2), a benchmark photocatalyst, is favored for its cost-effectiveness, non-toxicity, and stability under ultraviolet light. However, its weak light absorption, limited range, and high carrier recombination rates pose challenges. Herein, we designed an Au nanoparticle modified TiO2 (Au/TiO2) using a two-step method involving initial stirring adsorption followed by calcination. This composite material exhibits a localized surface plasmon resonance property, demonstrating powerful light absorption capacity in both the visible and near infrared regions. Moreover, following the decoration of Au nanoparticles, in situ XPS reveal Au/TiO2 exhibits a metal-support interaction, thereby enhancing the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers and decreasing the recombination rate of photogenerated charges. Thus, Au/TiO2 shows a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 47.89 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 39.25 times higher than that (1.22 mmol g−1 h−1) of pristine TiO2 and among the top rankings of TiO2-based photocatalysts. This study provides a novel approach to developing a photocatalyst capable of absorbing a broad spectrum of solar energy.

Abstract:We report the first demonstration of hydrogen treatment as a simple and effective strategy to fundamentally improve the performance of TiO(2) nanowires for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Hydrogen-treated rutile TiO(2) (H:TiO(2)) nanowires were prepared by annealing the pristine TiO(2) nanowires in hydrogen atmosphere at various temperatures in a range of 200-550 °C. In comparison to pristine TiO(2) nanowires, H:TiO(2) samples show substantially enhanced photocurrent in the entire potential window. More importantly, H:TiO(2) samples have exceptionally low photocurrent saturation potentials of -0.6 V vs Ag/AgCl (0.4 V vs RHE), indicating very efficient charge separation and transportation. The optimized H:TiO(2) nanowire sample yields a photocurrent density of ∼1.97 mA/cm(2) at -0.6 V vs Ag/AgCl, in 1 M NaOH solution under the illumination of simulated solar light (100 mW/cm(2) from 150 W xenon lamp coupled with an AM 1.5G filter). This photocurrent density corresponds to a solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of ∼1.63%. After eliminating the discrepancy between the irradiance of the xenon lamp and solar light, by integrating the incident-photon-to-current-conversion efficiency (IPCE) spectrum of the H:TiO(2) nanowire sample with a standard AM 1.5G solar spectrum, the STH efficiency is calculated to be ∼1.1%, which is the best value for a TiO(2) photoanode. IPCE analyses confirm the photocurrent enhancement is mainly due to the improved photoactivity of TiO(2) in the UV region. Hydrogen treatment increases the donor density of TiO(2) nanowires by 3 orders of magnitudes, via creating a high density of oxygen vacancies that serve as electron donors. Similar enhancements in photocurrent were also observed in anatase H:TiO(2) nanotubes. The capability of making highly photoactive H:TiO(2) nanowires and nanotubes opens up new opportunities in various areas, including PEC water splitting, dye-sensitized solar cells, and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Unlike water treatment processes, the photocatalytic oxidation of VOCs in air stream exhibits many challenges. This study will develop the hydrogen-plasma-treated TiO2 with improvement in photocatalytic activity. The hydrogen-plasma-treatment was carried out in the non-thermal atmospheric pressure reactor at room temperature or above. The catalysts were prepared and analyzed by advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electro-microscopy (SEM) and transmission electro-microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic activity of the catalyst has been investigated under UV light with various reaction conditions such as different initial toluene/formaldehyde concentrations and water content. Significantly, the conversion of toluene by a plasma-treated sample was 1.5 times higher than the bare TiO2 in a similar reaction condition.

Abstract:Plasma processing of photocatalysts can conveniently change the surface chemistry, introducing extrinsic or intrinsic surface doping, holding promise to make photocatalysts more active without altering the bulk properties. While gas plasma has long been employed to process photocatalysts, it is hard to avoid the surface dry etching caused by the high-energy charged ions in the plasma with a long mean free path, which results in excessive defects or even deactivation dependent on the kind of photocatalyst. Herein, we propose an innovative alcohol solution plasma approach to process the benchmarked Degussa P25-TiO2 photocatalyst. By virtue of the short mean free path of charged ions in the solution phase, high plasma density, and additional hydrogen doping, the alcohol plasma processing renders the surface amorphization of TiO2 particles and diminishes surface oxygen vacancies. A 124-fold increase of photocatalytic H2 evolution is achieved after alcohol solution plasma processing, which is attributed to the surface-amorphization-induced decrease in surface deep electron traps and upshifted energy level of electron traps. The alcohol solution plasma processing also outperforms water plasma processing and highlights a promising strategy of modulation of surface electronic properties for photocatalysis.

Abstract:Acoustic stimulation vibrates the cochlear basilar membrane, initiating a wave of displacement that travels toward the apex and reaches a peak over a restricted region according to the stimulus frequency. In this characteristic frequency region, a tone at the characteristic frequency maximally excites the sensory hair cells of the organ of Corti, which transduce it into electrical signals to produce maximum activity in the auditory nerve. Saturating, nonlinear, feedback from the motile outer hair cells is thought to provide electromechanical amplification of the travelling wave. However, neither the location nor the extent of the source of amplification, in relation to the characteristic frequency, are known. We have used a laser-diode interferometer to measure in vivo the distribution along the basilar membrane of nonlinear, saturating vibrations to 15 kHz tones. We estimate that the site of amplification for the 15 kHz region is restricted to a 1.25 mm length of basilar membrane centered on the 15 kHz place.
Synergistic material modification-induced optimization of interfacial charge transfer and surface hydrogen adsorption

Abstract:Being chemically stable, low cost and made from abundant resources, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) possesses the most desired advantages for photocatalytic applications. However, the intrinsic limits of high surface hydrogen adsorption energy, wide band gap, low separation rate and rapid recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers greatly hamper its utilization. To address these issues, the present work combines density functional theory (DFT) calculations with rational modifications of TiO 2 with nickel doping and an ultra-thin shield of fluorinated carbon (FNT) for application in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Comprehensive studies imply that the synergistic modifications not only optimize the surface H adsorption, but also facilitate the interfacial charge transfer and simultaneously prevent the photochemical and chemical corrosion of the catalysts. In good agreement with the theoretical predictions, the resulting FNT photocatalysts demonstrate an optimal HER efficiency of 13.0 mmol g −1 h −1 , nearly 33-times and over three-times beyond that of the pristine TiO 2 (0.4 mmol g −1 h −1 ) and the Ni-doped TiO 2 (4.2 mmol g −1 h −1 ), respectively. Moreover, the composite also exhibits excellent stability with a well-reproducible HER performance over a 66-hour cyclic HER test of 15 cycles.
