Abstract:We initiate the study of torsion-free algebraically hyperbolic groups; these groups generalise torsion-free hyperbolic groups and are intricately related to groups with no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. Indeed, for groups of cohomological dimension $2$ we prove that algebraic hyperbolicity is equivalent to containing no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. This links algebraically hyperbolic groups to two famous questions of Gromov; recent work has shown these questions to have negative answers in general, but they remain open for groups of cohomological dimension $2$. We also prove that algebraically hyperbolic groups are CSA, and so have canonical abelian JSJ-decompositions. In the two-generated case we give a precise description of the form of these decompositions.

Abstract:We study unit groups of rings of the form $\mathbb{F}_2[x,y]/(y^2 + gy + h)$, for $g, h \in \mathbb{F}_2[x]$ -- in particular, the question of (non)triviality of such unit groups. Up to automorphisms of $\mathbb{F}_2[x,y]$ we classify such rings into 3 distinct types. For 2 of the types we show that the unit group is always trivial, and conjecture that the unit group is always nontrivial for the 3rd type. We provide support for this conjecture both theoretically and computationally, via an algorithm that has been used to compute units in large degrees.

Compact Hypergroups from Discrete Subfactors

Abstract:Conformal inclusions of chiral conformal field theories, or more generally inclusions of quantum field theories, are described in the von Neumann algebraic setting by nets of subfactors, possibly with infinite Jones index if one takes non-rational theories into account. With this situation in mind, we study in a purely subfactor theoretical context a certain class of braided discrete subfactors with an additional commutativity constraint, that we call locality, and which corresponds to the commutation relations between field operators at space-like distance in quantum field theory. Examples of subfactors of this type come from taking a minimal action of a compact group on a factor and considering the fixed point subalgebra. We show that to every irreducible local discrete subfactor $\mathcal{N}\subset\mathcal{M}$ of type ${I\!I\!I}$ there is an associated canonical compact hypergroup (an invariant for the subfactor) which acts on $\mathcal{M}$ by unital completely positive (ucp) maps and which gives $\mathcal{N}$ as fixed points. To show this, we establish a duality pairing between the set of all $\mathcal{N}$-bimodular ucp maps on $\mathcal{M}$ and a certain commutative unital $C^*$-algebra, whose spectrum we identify with the compact hypergroup. If the subfactor has depth 2, the compact hypergroup turns out to be a compact group. This rules out the occurrence of compact \emph{quantum} groups acting as global gauge symmetries in local conformal field theory.

Abstract:A group $G$ is called subgroup conjugacy separable if for every pair of non-conjugate finitely generated subgroups of $G$, there exists a finite quotient of $G$ where the images of these subgroups are not conjugate. It is proved that the fundamental group of a hyperbolic 3-manifold (closed or with cusps) is subgroup conjugacy separable.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov hyperbolic groups obtained by the strict hyperbolization procedure of Charney and Davis are virtually compact special, hence linear and residually finite. Our strategy consists in constructing an action of a hyperbolized group on a certain dual CAT(0) cubical complex. As a result, all the common applications of strict hyperbolization are shown to provide manifolds with virtually compact special fundamental group. In particular, we obtain examples of closed negatively curved Riemannian manifolds whose fundamental groups are linear and virtually algebraically fiber.

Abstract:We investigate groups that act amenably on their Higson corona (also known as bi-exact groups) and we provide reformulations of this in relation to the stable Higson corona, nuclearity of crossed products and to positive type kernels. We further investigate implications of this in relation to the Baum-Connes conjecture, and prove that Gromov hyperbolic groups have isomorphic equivariant K-theories of their Gromov boundary and their stable Higson corona.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $N$ a normal subgroup of $G$. We prove that the knowledge of the sizes of the conjugacy classes of $G$ that are contained in $N$ and of their multiplicities provides information of $N$ in relation to the structure of $G$. Among other results, we obtain a criterion to determine whether a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $N$ lies in the hypercentre of $G$ for a fixed prime $p$, and therefore, whether the whole subgroup $N$ is hypercentral in $G$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple classical algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p \ge 0$ with natural module $W$. Let $H$ be a closed subgroup of $G$ and let $V$ be a non-trivial irreducible tensor-indecomposable $p$-restricted rational $KG$-module such that the restriction of $V$ to $H$ is irreducible. In this paper we classify all such triples $(G,H,V)$, where $H$ is a maximal closed disconnected positive-dimensional subgroup of $G$, and $H$ preserves a natural geometric structure on $W$.

Abstract:Wise's Quasiconvex Hierarchy Theorem classifying hyperbolic virtually compact special groups in terms of quasiconvex hierarchies played an essential role in Agol's proof of the Virtual Haken Conjecture. Answering a question of Wise, we construct a new virtual quasiconvex hierarchy for relatively hyperbolic virtually compact special groups. We use this hierarchy to prove a generalization of Wise's Malnormal Special Quotient Theorem for relatively hyperbolic virtually compact special groups with arbitrary peripheral subgroups.

Abstract:In 1983, Feingold and Frenkel posed a question about possible relations between affine Lie algebras, hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras and Siegel modular forms. In this paper we give an automorphic answer to this question and its generalization. We classify hyperbolic Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebras whose super-denominators define reflective automorphic products of singular weight on lattices of type $2U \oplus L$. As a consequence, we prove that there are exactly $81$ affine Lie algebras $g$ which have nice extensions to hyperbolic BKM superalgebras for which the leading Fourier-Jacobi coefficients of super-denominators coincide with the denominators of $g$. We find that 69 of them appear in Schellekens' list of semi-simple $V_1$ structures of holomorphic CFT of central charge $24$, while $8$ of them correspond to the $N=1$ structures of holomorphic SCFT of central charge $12$ composed of $24$ chiral fermions. The last $4$ cases are related to exceptional modular invariants from nontrivial automorphisms of fusion algebras. This clarifies the relationship of affine Lie algebras, vertex algebras and hyperbolic BKM superalgebras at the level of modular forms.

Abstract:We find modular transformations of normalized characters for the following $W$-algebras: (a) $W^{min}_k(\frak{g})$, where $\frak{g}=D_n \, (n \geq 4)$, or $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$, and $k$ is a negative integer $\geq -2$, or $\geq -\frac{h^{\vee}}{6}-1$, respectively; (b) quantum Hamiltonian reduction of the $\hat{\frak{g}}$-module $L(k\Lambda_0)$, where $\frak{g}$ is a simple Lie algebra, $f$ is its non-zero nilpotent element, and $k$ is a principal admissible level with the denominator $u > \theta(x)$, where $2x$ is the Dynkin characteristic of $f$ and $\theta$ is the highest root of $\frak{g}$. We prove that these vertex algebras are modular invariant. A conformal vertex algebra is called modular invariant if its character $tr_V q^{L_0-c/24}$ converges to a holomorphic modular function in the complex upper half-plane on a congruence subgroup. We find explicit formulas for their characters. Modular invariance of $V$ is important since, in particular, conjecturally it implies that $V$ is simple, and that $V$ is rational, provided that it is lisse.

Abstract:We show that for algebraic groups over local fields of characteristic zero, the following are equivalent: Every homomorphism has a closed image, every unitary representation decomposes into a direct sum of finite-dimensional and mixing representations, and that the matrix coefficients are dense within the algebra of weakly almost periodic functions over the group. In our proof, we employ methods from semi-group theory. We establish that algebraic groups are \emph{compactification-centric}, meaning $sG = Gs$ for any element $s$ in the weakly almost periodic compactification of the group $G$.

Abstract:We consider a real Abelian Lie supergroup $G$ acting on its complexification $M$, equipped with a $G$-invariant super Kähler form. We extend the scheme of classical geometric quantization to this setting and construct a unitary $G$-representation. We show that the occurrences of its irreducible subrepresentations are governed by the image of the moment map of the super Kähler form. As an application, we construct a Gelfand model of $G$, namely a unitary $G$-representation in which every unitary irreducible representation occurs exactly once.
