Abstract:Rising rates of female incarceration within the United States are incompatible with the lack of federal standards outlining the rights of incarcerated mothers and their children. A robust body of evidence demonstrates that prison nurseries, programmes designed for mothers to keep their infants under their care during detainment or incarceration, provide essential and beneficial care that could not otherwise be achieved within the current carceral infrastructure. These benefits include facilitation of breastfeeding, bonding during a critical period of child development, and decreased recidivism rates for participants. Legal precedent exists to support the rights of the mother to continue to parent their child but remains in stark opposition to current prison infrastructure that could allow them to do so. Existing state policies also have inconsistent mechanisms for determining child eligibility and should move to centre decision-making on a case-by-case basis. This work will demonstrate that a just society, supported by law and ensuring maternal–child welfare supports the establishment of prison nursery programmes as a part of the existing right to healthcare for incarcerated individuals.

Abstract:Abnormal and normal blood smears were examined with an electron microprobe for their metallic Zn and Ti content in an attempt to confirm and extend the earlier work of Carroll and Tullis 1 who had reported the simultaneous occurrence of Ti and Zn in up to 17 per cent of the examined leucocytes in various hematologic diseases. It was concluded that the earlier results 1 were seriously affected by the presence of contaminants which, for the most part, were probably derived from materials present on the Si discs used as substrate material, from room dust or from improper handling. A thorough study of the possible sources of contamination revealed that Zn and particularly Ti were present on or in many of the materials used in these experiments. Only if external sources of Ti and Zn were avoided by careful sample preparation and handling were unambiguous results forthcoming. Twenty-three abnormal blood samples studied herein failed to show Ti and/or Zn in any leucocyte: nine of these which were collected on clean substrates in dust-free areas were, in addition, virtually free of contaminants or other noncellular materials. The examination of two samples provided by K. Carroll 1 revealed that the simultaneous presence of Ti and Zn occurred primarily in noncellular material. Considerable information concerning blood and blood chemistry will be derived from electron microprobe examination, but, as discussed herein, careful consideration of probe operating variables and sample preparation will be essential.

Abstract:Incarcerated pregnant people face significant barriers when seeking health care services in prisons and jails, but little is known about their transitions from state prison health care systems to outside hospitals. This project analyzed current policies and procedures for care transitions for incarcerated people and presents policy recommendations to address issues of concern. We conducted in-depth interviews with stakeholders at a state prison, academic hospital, and private hospital to identify the barriers and facilitators to care transitions. Themes emerging from these interviews were operational, including medical records, communication, and education; and structural, including implicit biases and care of marginalized groups. These findings are likely applicable to similar facilities throughout the United States. A multipronged, interdisciplinary approach is needed to address challenges of care transitions.

Abstract:Each year, approximately 55,000 pregnant people are incarcerated in US jails. To learn about pregnancy and postpartum care in jails, we analyzed 34 qualitative interviews with jail personnel from facilities in five Southeastern US states. Themes included jail processes unique to pregnancy and burden on jails produced by liability and limited resources. Societal attitudes such as stigma, distrust of pregnant people, and a focus on fetal well-being were also important themes. Jail-community partnerships may mitigate the effects of scarce resources and improve jail perinatal care. Better community safety nets that decrease contact with jails are needed to improve pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract:Pregnant incarcerated women represent a unique population in the criminal justice system that has been largely overlooked in terms of their service-related needs. The present study examines 241 pregnant incarcerated women's service requests and preincarceration service utilization related to material help (e.g., food, housing), mental health (e.g., counseling), family services (e.g., home-visiting nurses), and health care (e.g., insurance). A subsample (n = 74) also provided information about service utilization following their release from jail. Analyses examined request and utilization patterns in relation to other sociodemographic risk experiences. Results show that specific risk factors such as age, as well as the accumulation of multiple risk factors, served as barriers to requesting and accessing community-based services. The present study illuminates unique challenges pregnant incarcerated women experience requesting and utilizing services. Abstract:Abstract: This article about women's prison-based health care reports quantitative findings from surveying 206 female prisoners and qualitative findings from 45 female prisoners interviewed in one prison in Kansas and three prisons in Ohio. Respondents expressed concerns about the availability of quality prison health care and the timeliness of attention to requests for assistance. Additionally, respondents identified administrative barriers to receiving quality health care within each state. The detrimental consequences of receiving inadequate care are poignantly described by some women. Suggestions are offered for improving the overall quality of prison health care for women and modifying procedures for obtaining such care.

Abstract:In the experiments in vitro we studied the influence of the process of disorganization of the carbohydrate-protein complexes of the ground substance on the structure, water content and biomechanical properties of the human hyaline cartilage. It was shown that the disorganization process of the cartilage ground substance and the subsequent removal of the formed products resulted in the increasing porosity of the cartilaginous tissue. This is expressed in the exposure of the fibrillar frame of the cartilage and formation of cavities of various volumes between its elements. The mentioned changes of the cartilage structure are followed by the reduction of the amount of monomolecular-bound water and simultaneous increase in swelling in water and water vapor sorption at maximal relative humidity. The removal of about 25% of glycosaminoglycanes of the ground substance resulted in the reduction of the rigidity of the cartilagenous tissue, and the increase in the residual deformation. The examination of the hyaline cartilage did not reveal any interrelation between the contents of proteoglycanes and the water content of the cartilagenous tissue.

Abstract:Women experiencing housing insecurity are at an elevated risk for adverse reproductive health outcomes due to the prevalence of chronic health conditions and higher risk behaviors. Social service and healthcare providers are front line in addressing women's needs when they seek support. Thus, we sought to explore reproductive healthcare barriers using in-depth interviews with 17 providers at 11 facilities serving housing-insecure women in Salt Lake County, Utah, USA from April to July 2018. Providers noted a number of system-, provider-, and individual-level barriers. Dominant themes include reliance on unstable funding, lack of provider training on reproductive health, and perceived logistical challenges to care. Due to the prevalence of immediate needs among housing-insecure women, providers attest that reproductive health needs often do not emerge as their urgent concern. Our findings suggest that addressing policy and funding challenges to prioritizing reproductive needs among housing-insecure women can help mitigate the potential for long-term adverse reproductive outcomes.

Policy and Legal Protection for Breastfeeding and Incarcerated Women in Canada

Abstract:Most incarcerated women in Canada are mothers. Because women are the fastest growing population in carceral facilities, protecting the rights of incarcerated women to breastfeed their children is increasingly important. There is considerable evidence that incarcerated women in Canada experience poor physical and mental health, isolation, and barriers to care. Incarcerated women and their children could benefit significantly from breastfeeding. This Insight in Policy explores policy and legal protection for breastfeeding in Canada as it relates to carceral facilities, considers key cases regarding breastfeeding rights among incarcerated women, and presents recommendations for policy development and advocacy. The Canadian Constitution and human rights legislation across Canada prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender and includes pregnancy and the possibility of becoming pregnant as a characteristic of gender. Some provinces note that breastfeeding is a characteristic of gender. Women's Wellness Within, a nonprofit organization providing volunteer perinatal support to criminalized women in Nova Scotia, conducted a scan of all provincial and territorial correctional services acts and the federal Corrections and Conditional Release Act: none mention breastfeeding. Protocols for breastfeeding during arrest and lockup by police were not available in any jurisdiction across Canada. International law, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Nelson Mandela Rules, and the Bangkok Rules, have application to the rights of incarcerated breastfeeding women. The Inglis v. British Columbia (Minister of Public Safety) (2013) and Hidalgo v. New Mexico Department of Corrections (2017) decisions are pivotal examples of successful litigation brought forward by incarcerated mothers to advance breastfeeding rights. Improved application and understanding of existent law could advance breastfeeding rights.

Abstract:The concepts of learning and memory have fascinated man since before the advent of science. The evolutionary significance of these mechanisms is clear. If an organism is able to learn and remember information about its environment, it will have a distinct advantage in survival. Biologically, learning is described as the inherent process in which an organism senses an environmental stimulus and undergoes adaptive changes in behavior as a response. Psychologists study learning in laboratories using simple organisms as model systems for humans, and observe specific behavioral changes which indicate the occurrence of learning. As of yet, the complete physiological mechanism of learning is unknown, and so the behavioral approach to learning research is the most commonly accepted. In this study, the planarian is used as the model organism in an investigation of the nature and location of the memory mechanism. Classical conditioning is utilized to train the organism, and the regeneration process is used to research the physiological aspects of the memory mechanism. Ultimately, an understanding of this mechanism in the planarian may hold implications for an understanding of learning and memory in higher organisms, such as humans.

Abstract:The Prison Journal, Ahead of Print. Research shows incarcerated women suffer more chronic and/or preexisting health conditions than their male counterparts. Through the lens of federal court litigation pursuant to Title 42 U.S. Code Section 1983, this article discusses women who brought legal challenges, questioning the adequacy of correctional medical care rendered to their chronic and preexisting health conditions. Case law reveals several trends, including multiple disease co-morbidities, malingering, medication administration, free-world specialty care, diagnostic and treatment limitations, and mental illness. The article concludes with policy implications, suggestions for future research, and recommendations for accelerated research on the chronic and/or preexisting health conditions of female prisoners.

Psychology of Addictive Behaviors

Abstract:Objective: In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court released a landmark decision in which they held that the right to abortion is not protected by the U.S. Constitution, ending almost 50 years of federally legal abortion in the United States. Because prior research demonstrates linkages between reproductive health and substance use at multiple socioecological levels, in this special section, we present studies that take a broad scope to understanding how addictive behaviors and reproduction-related behaviors, options, and access to care interrelate across a variety of contexts. Method: In this introduction, the guest editors detail the impetus for this special section, provide a brief overview of the present studies, discuss policy and intervention implications, and suggest future research directions. Results: The five studies presented in this special section span a wide range of populations, methods, and substance use and reproduction-related issues, including reasons for past abortions among women with opioid use disorder, alcohol effects on men's condom use resistance, considerations regarding alcohol-involved rape on implementation of "rape exceptions" to abortion bans, the role of early exposure to substance use and sexual abuse on reproductive health outcomes, and the effects of exposure to abortion-related media coverage on alcohol use intentions following the Supreme Court decision. Conclusions: The studies in this special section highlight the ways in which substance use and reproductive health are inextricably intertwined. Recent and future changes in reproductive health legislation and policy underscore the critical need for continued empirical inquiry into these intersecting public health concerns. Abstract:Objective: For decades, research has supported linkages among reproductive health factors and interpersonal violence, including sexual violence and intimate partner violence. However, much of this research occurred before June 2022, when the U.S. Supreme Court reversed almost 50 years of federally legal abortion in the United States in their landmark decision of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case. Given the relative recency of this decision, it is unclear how the previously demonstrated intersections of violence and reproductive health may be influenced by this momentous change in reproductive rights and access to care. Method: In this perspective, I consider the current empirical evidence regarding the intersections of reproductive health and interpersonal violence, with particular emphasis on future research needed in this area due to the changes in reproductive health legislation across the United States. Results: Several potential research directions were identified, including (a) the impact of unacknowledged rape, rape myths, stigma, victim credibility, and legal gray areas on the utilization of "rape exceptions" to abortion bans; (b) elevated risks during pregnancy such as recovery from trauma and intimate partner violence; (c) reproductive coercion issues; and (d) potential new forms of perpetrator abuse. Conclusions: Because interpersonal violence and reproductive health are inextricably linked, future violence research conducted in the United States would benefit from consideration of the nation's changing reproductive health care landscape in order to inform prevention efforts, clinical considerations, and policy decisions.
