Abstract:To explore the minds of others, which is traditionally referred to as Theory of Mind (ToM), is perhaps the most fundamental ability of humans as social beings. Impairments in ToM could lead to difficulties or even deficits in social interaction. The present study focuses on two core components of ToM, the ability to infer others’ beliefs and the ability to infer others’ emotions, which we refer to as cognitive and affective ToM respectively. Charting both typical and atypical trajectories underlying the cognitive-affective ToM promises to shed light on the precision identification of mental disorders, such as depressive disorders (DD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, most prior studies failed to capture the underlying processes involved in the cognitive-affective ToM in a fine-grained manner. To address this problem, we propose an innovative conceptual framework, referred to as visual theory of mind (V-ToM), by constructing visual scenes with emotional and cognitive meanings and by depicting explicitly a four-stage process of how humans make inferences about the beliefs and emotions of others. Through recording individuals’ eye movements while looking at the visual scenes, our model enables us to accurately measure each stage involved in the computation of cognitive-affective ToM, thereby allowing us to infer about potential difficulties that might occur in each stage. Our model is based on a large sample size ( n > 700) and a novel audio-visual paradigm using visual scenes containing cognitive-emotional meanings. Here we report the obtained differential features among healthy controls, DD and ASD individuals that overcome the subjectivity of conventional questionnaire-based assessment, and therefore could serve as valuable references for mental health applications based on AI-aided digital medicine.
Unlocking narratives: Longitudinal associations between theory of mind and reading comprehension

Abstract:This study explores the longitudinal association between Theory of Mind (ToM) and reading comprehension (RC) in middle childhood, focusing on three advanced ToM (AToM) components: social reasoning, reasoning about ambiguity and recognition of social norm transgressions. Over the course of a year, 112 nine-year-olds (61 girls, 51 boys; Mage = 9; 0 years, ±4 months at wave 1) were followed from Grade 3 to Grade 4 and assessed for AToM predictors of Grade-4 RC. Findings show that only social reasoning predicts RC, independent of general intelligence and prior RC performance. In turn, RC did not predict any AToM component. These findings contribute to understanding cognitive development in educational contexts, emphasizing the significance of AToM, particularly social reasoning, in RC.

It is widely accepted that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience difficulties with ToM. However, there are also findings suggesting that ToM abilities might also be compromised in children with Developmental Language Disorders (DLD). Purpose: To assess ToM abilities in three groups of children: 1. ASD with no language difficulties; 2. DLD, known for their language disorder; and 3. TD with no language issues. Materials and Methods: A total of 41 preschool children aged 5-to-6 were examined and assigned to one of the three groups based on previous clinical reports and a standardized Hebrew language assessment tool. Nonverbal IQ was established with a standardized test to verify within average range placement (> 75 IQ). ToM skills were examined with a Hebrew version of the ToM Task Battery and parent's questionnaire (ToMI). Results: Children with ASD had significantly lower ToM scores compared to the children with DLD, and TD. The ToM scores of the children with DLD were similar to the scores of the TD children. According to the parents' questionnaires, both the ASD children and the DLD children had less developed ToM skills compared to their TD peers. Conclusion: The present findings suggest that children with ASD have a fundamental difficulty in ToM that is independent of their language abilities. Children with DLD show difficulties in everyday social interactions that involve ToM. It is possible that both ASD and language disorders influence ToM development, suggesting that different developmental routes affect the acquisition of ToM. Keywords: autism, DLD, ToM, ToMTB, ToMI ToM is considered as the capacity to represent and understand mental states, emotions, motivations, and oneself's and others' beliefs. 1 Children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often present difficulties in ToM, and this impedes their participation in social contexts. 2–4 In fact, the ToM Hypothesis for Autism suggests that difficulties in ToM are the core deficit underlying the social, behavioral, and communicative deficits exhibited by individuals with ASD. 1,5 Although to-date questions have arisen regarding the universality and uniqueness of theory-of-mind deficits in autism, and about how this hypothesis could explain early symptoms including restricted interests, or repetitive behaviors, studies repeatedly show reduced performance on tasks that assess ToM in ASD. 6 Thus, ToM is still considered crucial for understanding social performance in ASD. However, the association between language skills (eg, vocabulary and grammar) and performance on ToM tasks in children with ASD raises the possibility that language abilities affect the performance of ToM tasks in children with ASD. 7,8 One way to tease apart the influence of language on ToM abilities is to assess children with ASD and with no language disorder compared to children with language disorder and no ASD. Thus, the present study was aimed to assess ToM abilities in children with ASD whose language is within the norm for their age (ASD-LN) 9,10 compared to children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and typically developing children (TD). Computational Mechanisms Underlying the Emergence of Theory of Mind in Children

Abstract:The ability to decipher the intentions of other agents and to mentalize how one’s own choice might influence others’ behavior is essential for social interaction, especially when these intentions fluctuate over time between competitive and cooperative strategies. Little is known about how and when this Advanced Theory of Mind (AToM) ability develops during childhood. Is its development conceptually driven, or does it result from an increase in the general information-processing capacities with age? We used a computational modeling approach to elucidate these questions. We implemented a card-matching task in which 193 children (101 females) from ages 3.1 to 8.8 thought they were playing with another player. Actually, they played with an algorithm that alternated without warning between cooperative and competitive strategies in blocks. Younger children in kindergarten mostly relied on a simple Bayesian decision process that tracked the probability of the other agent to choose a target based on the agent’s previous action. Starting at 8 years old, most children were able to actively mentalize their influence on the other’s decision, and to arbitrate between cooperative and competitive intentions when making adaptive social decisions. Altogether, these results suggest that an important developmental milestone occurs at the age of 8 years old, when children conceptually realize their own influence on others, and the importance of actively tracking others’ intentions in volatile situations. This study documents significant developmental stages in mid-childhood AToM abilities and suggests that the conceptual insights that occur during this period are critical for social cognition.

Abstract:This study explores the development of theory of mind, operationalized as recursive thinking ability, from adolescence to early adulthood ( N = 110; young adolescents = 47; adolescents = 43; young adults = 20). The construct of theory of mind has been operationalized in two different ways: as the ability to recognize the correct mental state of a character, and as the ability to attribute the correct mental state in order to predict the character’s behaviour. The Imposing Memory Task, with five recursive thinking levels, and a third-order false-belief task with three recursive thinking levels (devised for this study) have been used. The relationship among working memory, executive functions, and linguistic skills are also analysed. Results show that subjects exhibit less understanding of elevated recursive thinking levels (third, fourth, and fifth) compared to the first and second levels. Working memory is correlated with total recursive thinking, whereas performance on the linguistic comprehension task is related to third level recursive thinking in both theory of mind tasks. An effect of age on third-order false-belief task performance was also found. A key finding of the present study is that the third-order false-belief task shows significant age differences in the application of recursive thinking that involves the prediction of others’ behaviour. In contrast, such an age effect is not observed in the Imposing Memory Task. These results may support the extension of the investigation of the third order false belief after childhood.

Abstract:The ability to infer mental and affective states of others is crucial for social functioning. This ability, denoted as Theory of Mind (ToM), develops rapidly during childhood, yet results on its development across adolescence and into young adulthood are rare. In the present study, we tested the two-component model, measuring age-related changes in social-perceptual and social-cognitive ToM in a sample of 267 participants between 11 and 25 years of age. Additionally, we measured language, reasoning, and inhibitory control as major covariates. Participants inferred mental states from non-verbal cues in a social-perceptual task (Eye Test) and from stories with faux pas in a social-cognitive task (Faux Pas Test). Results showed substantial improvement across adolescence in both ToM measures and in the covariates. Analysis with linear mixed models (LMM) revealed specific age-related growth for the social-perceptual component, while the age-related increase of the social-cognitive component fully aligned with the increase of the covariates. These results support the distinction between ToM components and indicate that adolescence is a crucial period for developing social-perceptual ToM abilities. Statement of contribution What is already known on this subject? To date, much research has been dedicated to Theory of Mind (ToM) development in early and middle childhood. However, only a few studies have examined development of ToM in adolescence. Studies so far suggest age-related differences in ToM between adolescents and young adults. What this study adds The study offers several methodological advantages including a large sample size with a continuous distribution of age (age 11-25) and the use of a comprehensive test battery to assess ToM and covariates (language, executive functions, reasoning). The results provide evidence for asymmetries in the development of two ToM components (social-perceptual and social-cognitive; the two-component account) across the studied age range: the social perceptual component showed specific development, while the age-related increase of the social-cognitive component fully aligned with increase of the covariates. Adolescence is a crucial period for developing social-perceptual ToM abilities.

Abstract:This study aims to micro genetically investigate preschoolers' theory of mind (ToM) development, including desire, belief, false belief, emotion, and knowledge. This study was conducted with eighty-three children aged between three and five years and consisted of an experimental group and a control group. A battery of tests for the measurement of verbal ability, working memory, and executive functions were conducted both at the pretest and posttest sessions. The children's ToM development was assessed by the ToM scale (Wellman & Liu, 2004). The experimental group was tested every four weeks for six phases of testing. In this way, their ToM development was followed up for six months. The control group was tested twice at six month intervals. In line with the literature, the group-level analysis showed that the ToM scores differed between the six phases of testing and between age groups. On an individual level, the ToM understanding did not change suddenly, but rather gradually. For all the task types, passing a test once did not necessarily mean always passing this task. Individual plots suggested that there is no single developmental pattern that fits all children, but ultimately, they reach a common mental understanding. Further analyses were performed for practice effects and sequence of development.

Theory of Mind in Large Language Models: Examining Performance of 11 State-of-the-Art models vs. Children Aged 7-10 on Advanced Tests

Abstract:To what degree should we ascribe cognitive capacities to Large Language Models (LLMs), such as the ability to reason about intentions and beliefs known as Theory of Mind (ToM)? Here we add to this emerging debate by (i) testing 11 base- and instruction-tuned LLMs on capabilities relevant to ToM beyond the dominant false-belief paradigm, including non-literal language usage and recursive intentionality; (ii) using newly rewritten versions of standardized tests to gauge LLMs' robustness; (iii) prompting and scoring for open besides closed questions; and (iv) benchmarking LLM performance against that of children aged 7-10 on the same tasks. We find that instruction-tuned LLMs from the GPT family outperform other models, and often also children. Base-LLMs are mostly unable to solve ToM tasks, even with specialized prompting. We suggest that the interlinked evolution and development of language and ToM may help explain what instruction-tuning adds: rewarding cooperative communication that takes into account interlocutor and context. We conclude by arguing for a nuanced perspective on ToM in LLMs.

Abstract:Understanding individual differences in theory of mind (ToM; the ability to attribute mental states to others) in middle childhood and adolescence hinges on the availability of robust and scalable measures. Open-ended response tasks yield valid indicators of ToM but are labor intensive and difficult to compare across studies. We examined the reliability and validity of new machine learning and deep learning neural network automated scoring systems for measuring ToM in children and adolescents. Two large samples of British children and adolescents aged between 7 and 13 years (Sample 1: N = 1,135, Mage = 10.22 years, SD = 1.45; Sample 2: N = 1,020, Mage = 10.36 years, SD = 1.27) completed the silent film and strange stories tasks. Teachers rated Sample 2 children's social competence with peers. A single latent-factor explained variation in performance on both the silent film and strange stories task (in Sample 1 and 2) and test performance was sensitive to age-related differences and individual differences within each age-group. A deep learning neural network automated scoring system trained on Sample 1 exhibited interrater reliability and measurement invariance with manual ratings in Sample 2. Validity of ratings from the automated scoring system was supported by unique positive associations between ToM and teacher-rated social competence. The results demonstrate that reliable and valid measures of ToM can be obtained using the new freely available deep learning neural network automated scoring system to rate open-ended text responses. ToM is the ability to ascribe mental states (e.g. beliefs, intents, desires, pretending, knowledge) to oneself and others as well as to recognise that others have beliefs, desires, and intentions that differ from one's own. The purpose of this article is to provide a background on ToM's theoretical origins, describe young children's understanding of mental states, explain the use of false beliefs tasks as an assessment measure, report several false belief studies and their age-related variations, describe the children's mental models, and summarise the children's understanding of mental states.

The complex associations between scientific reasoning and advanced theory of mind.

Abstract:This 6-wave longitudinal study (2014-2018) of 161 German 5- to 10-year-olds from a midsized city and rural area in southern Germany (89 females, 72 males; predominantly White; mostly middle class) found that scientific-reasoning abilities first develop at 6 years. Abilities were highly stable, with the kindergarten score predicting 25% of end-of-elementary-school variance. Individual but not developmental differences were related to language abilities (0.39), mindreading skills (0.33), and parental education (0.36). In early elementary school, mindreading skills predicted scientific reasoning (0.15), but not vice versa; in late elementary school, bidirectional associations emerged (0.11-0.33). Our findings suggest that mindreading is a precursor for the development of scientific reasoning and that older children use scientific reasoning to revise their advanced theories of mind.

Abstract:Theory of mind (ToM), the ability to infer others' mental states, undergoes an ongoing development from adolescence to early adulthood. The present study investigated how self-other control (SOC), the ability to distinguish selfand other-related representations, contributed to individual differences in false-belief inference (a common measure of ToM) in young adults (Study 1) and adolescents (Study 2). Although previous studies have suggested that inhibitory control (IC), the ability to suppress own prepotent responses to help overcome egocentricity, is a crucial determinant to the development of ToM, the present results showed that in both samples, SOC worked as a moderator on the effect of IC when participants inferred others' false beliefs. Specifically, IC predicted the performance of false-belief inference only in participants with higher SOC. These findings indicate that apart from IC, SOC is also an indispensable determinant to individual differences in ToM of both young adults and adolescents. In addition, the ability to integrate SOC and IC may play an essential role in the development of adolescents' ToM.
Development of Second-Order False Belief and Faux Pas Understanding in 7 to 9 Year-old Children

Abstract:Second-order false belief(FB) tasks and Faux pas tasks were used to explore the development of theory of mind(ToM) in 90 children aged 7-9.The results showed significant differences existed between children aged 7 and 8 and between children aged 7 and 9,but not between children aged 8 and 9.All children performed better on second-order FB tasks than on faux pas tasks.Moreover,the scores on the two tasks correlated significantly(age controlled).In sum,8 years of age was another turning point in ToM and the concepts(belief,emotion,intention) of theory of mind correlated each other during 7 to 9 years of age.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of diverse variables on theory of mind development in a group of 114 pre-school children aged between 3 years 1 month and 4 years 2 months. Development levels in diverse areas were assessed, along with the quality of family interaction, quality of attachment and the children's performance when faced with a staggered series of theory of mind tasks ranging from simple desire situations to a false belief task. The percentage of children classified as securely attached who responded correctly to the false belief task proved significant, whereas no significant relationship was found between a correct response to this task and number of siblings or number of older siblings. We propose the development of a multi-causal model in order to continue our research into the optimum family environment for theory of mind development.

Egocentric Tendencies in Theory of Mind Reasoning: An Empirical and Computational Analysis

Abstract:Humans develop an ability for Theory of Mind (ToM) by the age of six, which enables them to infer another agent’s mental state and to differentiate it from one’s own. Much evidence suggests that humans can do this in a presumably optimal way and, correspondingly, a Bayesian Theory of Mind (BToM) framework has been shown to match human inferences and attributions. Mostly, this has been investigated with specific, explicit mentalizing tasks. However, other research has shown that humans often deviate from optimal reasoning in various ways. We investigate whether typical BToM models really capture human ToM reasoning in tasks that solicit more intuitive reasoning. We present results of an empirical study where humans deviate from Bayesian optimal reasoning in a ToM task but instead exhibit egocentric tendencies. We also discuss how computational models can better account for such sub-optimal processing.

Probing the Robustness of Theory of Mind in Large Language Models

Abstract:With the success of ChatGPT and other similarly sized SotA LLMs, claims of emergent human like social reasoning capabilities, especially Theory of Mind (ToM), in these models have appeared in the scientific literature. On the one hand those ToM-capabilities have been successfully tested using tasks styled similar to those used in psychology (Kosinski, 2023). On the other hand, follow up studies showed that those capabilities vanished when the tasks were slightly altered (Ullman, 2023). In this work we introduce a novel dataset of 68 tasks for probing ToM in LLMs, including potentially challenging variations which are assigned to 10 complexity classes. This way it is providing novel insights into the challenges LLMs face with those task variations. We evaluate the ToM performance of four SotA open source LLMs on our dataset and the dataset introduced by (Kosinski, 2023). The overall low goal accuracy across all evaluated models indicates only a limited degree of ToM capabilities. The LLMs' performance on simple complexity class tasks from both datasets are similar. Whereas we find a consistent tendency in all tested LLMs to perform poorly on tasks that require the realization that an agent has knowledge of automatic state changes in its environment, even when those are spelled out to the model. For task complications that change the relationship between objects by replacing prepositions, we notice a performance drop in all models, with the strongest impact on the mixture-of-experts model. With our dataset of tasks grouped by complexity we offer directions for further research on how to stabilize and advance ToM capabilities in LLM.

Abstract:Social working memory (WM) has distinct neural substrates from canonical cognitive WM (e.g., color). However, no study, to the best of our knowledge, has yet explored how social WM develops. The current study explored the development of social WM capacity and its relation to theory of mind (ToM). Experiment 1 had sixty-four 3- to 6-year-olds memorize 1-5 biological motion stimuli, the processing of which is considered a hallmark of social cognition. The social WM capacity steadily increased between 3- and 6-year-olds, with the increase between 4 and 5 years being sharp. Furthermore, social WM capacity positively predicted preschoolers' ToM scores, while nonsocial WM capacity did not; this positive correlation was particularly strong among 4-year-olds (Experiment 2, N = 144).

La compréhension des émotions chez les enfants d'âge préscolaire dans le cadre d'une théorie de l'esprit. Similarities in the development of ToM-emotion abilities and social understanding were found, respectively, in both groups (delay hypothesis in ID participants). Some differences between groups were observed in the links between social understanding and ToM-emotion abilities. Significant correlations between developmental characteristics (verbal and non-verbal cognition) and ToM-emotion abilities were obtained for both groups. Verbal cognition explained an important part of the variance of ToM results (understanding of causes and consequences of emotions). The impact of chronological age on ToM-emotion abilities was also examined and is discussed.
