Abstract:Coherence function plays an important role in measuring brain functional connectivity. In this paper, we extend the definition of coherence function from the classic Fourier domain to the time-frequency plane using the Stockwell transform. This extension has advantages over other existing time-varying coherence functions in terms of easy interpretation and fast computation. An application of our approach to an MEG study reveals interesting temporal interaction between contralateral and ipsilateral motor cortices under the multi-source interference task.
A case of unilateral neglect in Huntington's disease.

Abstract:Unilateral neglect, an attentional deficit in detecting and acting on information coming from one side of space, is a relatively common consequence of right hemisphere stroke. Although neglect has been observed following damage to a variety of brain structures, to date no reports exist of neglect phenomena arising from Huntington's Disease (HD). However, reports in the animal and human literature suggest that neglect is possible following damage to a primary site for Huntington's pathology, the basal ganglia. Here we present a patient (BG) with genetically proven HD who, in the context of the mild intellectual, executive and attentional impairments associated with the disorder, showed a remarkably severe and stable neglect for left space. MRI and electrophysiological results make it unlikely that the spatial bias could be accounted for by basic sensory loss. In addition, behavioural investigation indicated that, although BG's neglect operated in a very striking manner along body-centred co-ordinates (missing almost all information presented to her left), more general limitations in visual attention were apparent to the left-side of information presented entirely to the right of the body midline. Further evidence is presented showing that the neglect was manifest on tactile and auditory tasks as well as those presented in the visual domain. The presence of neglect in HD in this case is novel and somewhat puzzling, particularly as flourodeoyglucose positron emission tomography revealed bilateral caudate hypoperfusion. Reducing the statistical threshold on this analysis revealed a potential frontal hypometabolism that was more marked in the right than left hemisphere. However, as this was only apparent at a threshold below that normally considered acceptable (due to the resulting number of false positives), this possible account of the neglect must be viewed very cautiously.
Disorders of perceived auditory lateralization after lesions of the right hemisphere

Abstract:The disorders of perceived auditory lateralization after unilateral damage of the cerebral hemispheres were investigated by dichotic presentation of pure tones, lateralization being obtained by interaural intensity differences. Observations were made on 107 unilateral brain-damaged patients and 30 normal subjects who were required to localize the perceived position of fused sound images. The images were generated by dichotic stimuli delivered through headphones and the patients were asked to point the perceived position. A clear-cut hemispheric asymmetry was found. Whereas left brain-damaged patients and right brain-damaged patients without visual field defects were not impaired in this task in comparison with controls, the performance of right brain-damaged patients with visual field defects was defective, with a systematic directional error towards the right side, that is, the side ipsilateral to the damaged hemisphere. The defect of auditory lateralization involved both the half-space contralateral to the lesion and the ipsilateral one. Different hypotheses are discussed in order to explain the present results. It is argued that they cannot easily be interpreted in terms of defective processing of sensory information and the proposal is made that lesions of the right hemisphere may produce a distortion of the internal representation of egocentric space to the right, yielding a systematic error of auditory lateralization are discussed.
Differences between left- and right-sided neglect revisited: A large cohort study across multiple domains

Abstract:Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is a syndrome that can occur after right- and left-hemisphere damage. It is generally accepted that left-sided USN is more severe than right-sided USN. Evidence for such a difference in other domains is lacking. Primary aims were to compare frequency, severity, region specificity, cognition, physical functioning, and physical independence between left and right USN. Secondary aims were to compare lesion characteristics. A total of 335 stroke patients admitted for inpatient rehabilitation were included. The severity of the lateralized attentional deficit was measured with a shape cancellation and line bisection test (in peripersonal and extrapersonal space) and the Catherine Bergego scale. The Mini-Mental State Examination, Stichting Afasie Nederland score, search organization (i.e., best R and intersections rate), Motricity Index, balance, mobility, and self-care were assessed. Measures were statistically compared between left, right, and no USN patients. Lesion overlay plots were compared with lesion subtraction analyses.RESULTS: Left USN (15.82%) was more frequent than right USN (9.25%). Demographic and stroke characteristics were comparable between groups. The lateralized attentional deficit was most severe in left USN. USN in both peripersonal and extrapersonal space was more frequently left-sided in nature. Search efficiency was lower in left USN. Balance was poorer in right USN. No differences between left and right USN were found for cognitive ability, communication, motor strength, mobility, and self-care. Most patients with left USN had right-hemispheric lesions, whereas patients with right USN could have lesions in either the left or the right hemisphere. To conclude, left and right USN are both common after stroke. Although the lateralized attention deficit is worse in left than in right USN, consequences at the level of physical functioning and physical independence are largely comparable. From a clinical perspective, it is important to systematically screen for USN, both after right- and after left-hemisphere damage.

Prolonged Neglect Following Unilateral Disruption of a Prefrontal Cortical–dorsal Striatal System

Abstract:We investigated the potential function of the system formed by connections between the medial prefrontal cortex and the dorsomedial striatum in aspects of attentional function in the rat. It has been reported previously that disconnection of the same corticostriatal circuit produced marked deficits in performance of a serial, choice reaction-time task while sparing the acquisition of an appetitive Pavlovian approach behaviour in an autoshaping task (Christakou et al., 2001). Here, we hypothesized that unilateral disruption of the same circuit would lead to hemispatial inattention, contrasting with the global attention deficit following complete disconnection of the system. Combined unilateral lesions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the medial caudate-putamen (mCPu) within the same hemisphere produced a severe and long-lasting contralesional neglect syndrome while sparing the acquisition of autoshaping. These results provide further evidence for the involvement of the medial prefrontal-dorsomedial striatal circuit in aspects of attentional function, as well as insight into the nature of neglect deficits following lesions at different levels within corticostriatal circuitry.

Abstract:Objective: To study the possible mechanism of right-sided neglect due to left hemisphere lesion. Methods: Tests of Schenkenberg line bisection and Albert line cancellation used for measuring hemispatial neglect, and visual spatial functions including copying the figures and arranging squares were carried out in a right handed patient diagnosed as having left hemisphere lesion and transient sensory aphasia. Results: (1) The aphasic patient with left lesion was found presented with right-sided neglect and visual spatial dysfunction. (2) The language barrier of the patient disappeared faster than his visual spatial barrier and right-sided neglect. Conclusion: This patient's visual spatial function and the predominant hemisphere of both hemispaces of attention may remain in the left.
Effects of Unilateral Dorsal and Ventral Striatal Dopamine Depletion on Visual Neglect in the Rat: A Neural and Behavioural Analysis

Abstract:Rats were trained in a specially designed apparatus to detect brief, unpredictable visual stimuli presented to either side of the head. In one condition, rats reported the detection of the visual stimulus by removing their heads from a central location and responding in one of two adjacent side-holes where the visual stimulus had occurred. In the other condition, rats were trained to respond in the hole on the opposite side to where the visual stimulus had occurred. Following training all rats received striatal infusions of 6-hydroxydopamine leading to profound striatal dopamine depletion. One group received unilateral intra-nucleus accumbens 6-hydroxydopamine infusions. Two groups received 6-hydroxydopamine unilaterally into the caudate nucleus. Two other groups received two infusions of 6-hydroxydopamine, intra-accumbens and intra-caudate, on either the same side or on opposite sides. The results showed that all groups, except that receiving only intra-accumbens 6-hydroxydopamine, exhibited a significant bias in responding towards the side of the lesion which correlated with dopamine depletion in the head of the caudate nucleus, regardless of the type of discrimination or pre-operative strategy. These biased groups were also slower to initiate, but not to complete, contralateral responses. Detailed analysis of the behavioural evidence suggested that unilateral striatal dopamine depletion does not produce sensory loss or sensory inattention but rather an output type neglect, perhaps related to hemiakinesia or “intentional neglect”. The bias recovered to preoperative levels by 7 weeks after surgery, but could be reinstated by pretreatment with alpha-methyl- para-tyrosine, thus suggesting the involvement of presynaptic mechanisms in recovery. Although unilateral dopamine depletion from the nucleus accumbens alone had no effects on visual neglect, it produced a lateralized bias in premature responding away from the side of the lesion, contrasting with the bias towards the side of the lesion seen in all of the other groups. These effects appeared to summate in this and in another condition in which a more eccentric response was required for stimulus detection, to suggest an interaction in function between the dorsal and ventral striatum.
Left Cerebellar Lesions may be Associated with an Increase in Spatial Neglect-like Symptoms

Abstract:Each cerebellar hemisphere projects to the contralateral cerebral hemisphere. Previous research suggests a lateralization of cognitive functions in the cerebellum that mirrors the cerebral cortex, with attention/visuospatial functions represented in the left cerebellar hemisphere, and language functions in the right cerebellar hemisphere. Although there is good evidence supporting the role of the right cerebellum with language functions, the evidence supporting the notion that attention and visuospatial functions are left lateralized is less clear. Given that spatial neglect is one of the most common disorders arising from right cortical damage, we reasoned that damage to the left cerebellum would result in increased spatial neglect-like symptoms, without necessarily leading to an official diagnosis of spatial neglect. To examine this disconnection hypothesis, we analyzed neglect screening data (line bisection, cancellation, figure copying) from 20 patients with isolated unilateral cerebellar stroke. Results indicated that left cerebellar patients (n = 9) missed significantly more targets on the left side of cancellation tasks compared to a normative sample. No significant effects were observed for right cerebellar patients (n = 11). A lesion overlap analysis indicated that Crus II (78% overlap), and lobules VII and IX (66% overlap) were the regions most commonly damaged in left cerebellar patients. Our results are consistent with the notion that the left cerebellum may be important for attention and visuospatial functions. Given the poor prognosis typically associated with neglect, we suggest that screening for neglect symptoms, and visuospatial deficits more generally, may be important for tailoring rehabilitative efforts to help maximize recovery in cerebellar patients.

Abstract:In the present paper we report on speech perception in left (n=16) and right (n=10) frontal lobe nonaphasic patients compared with healthy controls (n=26). The patients were inpatients of the University Clinic of Neurology, Innsbruck, Austria, who participated in a prospective neuropsychological study dealing with several aspects of lateralized functioning. The patients were tested with dichotic presentations of consonant-vowel syllables, which allows for specific probing of speech perception in the left and right hemisphere, respectively. The task was to report which syllable they heard best on each trial, emphasizing single answers on each trial. There were 36 dichotic trials with pairs of CV syllables made up of the six stop consonants /p/, /t/, /k/, /b/, /d/, /g/, all paired with the vowel /a/. There were always two different syllables presented on each trial, one in each ear. The results showed significant differences between the left and right lesioned patients in their performance on the dichotic listening test. While the right lesioned patients and the control subjects had a normal and expected right ear advantage, the left lesioned patients performed almost at random with regard to the right and left ear stimulus. The right lesioned patients and the control group showed a right ear advantage of the same magnitude, although the overall performance was somewhat impaired in the right lesioned group compared to the healthy control group. The left lesioned patients showed no ear advantage at all, and particularly their right ear scores were impaired compared to both the control group and the right lesioned patient group. The results are discussed in terms of the role played by the left frontal cortex in speech perception and language asymmetry.
Sensitivity and Specificity of the Brentano Illusion Test in the Detection of Visual Hemi-Field Deficits in Patients with Unilateral Spatial Neglect

Abstract:Stroke survivors with right-brain damage (RBD) often present with attentional deficits such as left unilateral spatial neglect. Some patients also present with contralesional visual hemi-field deficits. A late detection of visual hemi-field deficits (VHFD) contributes to hampering neurorehabilitation and functional outcome of patients with neglect. The Brentano Illusion Test (BRIT) may be used for an early detection of VHFD during the neuropsychological assessment. In the present study, we determined the sensitivity and specificity of the BRIT for screening VHFD in patients with neglect. Sixty-four consecutive RBD patients were examined. Forty-five presented with neglect. Of these, 23 presented with VHFD (hemianopia or quadrantanopia) as detected by the Humphrey automated static visual field testing (reference standard). Consecutive patients also included 19 participants without neglect, who did not have any VHFD. The sensitivity and specificity of the BRIT for neglect patients were 78.3% (95% CI: 61.4-95.1) and 90.9 (95% CI: 78.9-100.0), respectively. Positive predictive value (PPV) was 89.6% (95% CI: 76.4-100.0); negative predictive value (NPV) 80.7% (95% CI: 65.2-96.2). No false positives in the group without neglect were identified. We conclude that the BRIT is an effective tool for clinical neuropsychologists to screen for possible VHFD in neglect patients during the neuropsychological assessment, allowing the refinement of the clinical picture in the neuropsychological report. An early detection of VHFD also allows referring the patient to standard diagnostics for a formal visual field examination, right from the first neuropsychological assessment.
Object-Based Visual Neglect: A Computational Hypothesis

Abstract:Some patients with damage to the right parietal cortex show neglect for the left half of each of a series of objects shown in a horizontal row in the visual field. The neglect is thus not based on failure to see objects in any part of left visual space, but is object-based. We show that in a model of attention with separate V1, object (inferior temporal cortex, IT) and spatial (posterior parietal cortex, PP) modules the effect can arise after graded damage increasing towards the right of the PP module when the lateral inhibition between neurons in the PP and V1 modules is short-range. The local lateral inhibition produces high contrast effects at the edges of each object, and it is when this interacts with gradually increasing damage through the left visual field that the visibility of the left half of each object is especially impaired. This result was found in a formal model completely specified by mean field equations to quantify the dynamical interactions between the modules. This is the first quantitative account of object-based neglect found in humans with right parietal cortex damage, and provides evidence that the model of attention we describe can account for even detailed and extraordinary phenomena that can occur in visual perception.

Abstract:Several cortical and sub-cortical regions in the right hemisphere, particularly in parietal and frontal lobe, but also in temporal lobe and thalamus, are part of neural networks critically implicated in spatial and attentional functions. Damage to different sites within these networks can cause hemispatial neglect. The aim of this study was to identify the neural substrates of different spatial processing components that are known to contribute to neglect symptoms. First, three different spatial tasks (visual search, bisection, and visual memory) were tested in 27 patients with focal right brain-damage. Voxel-based lesion–symptom mapping was used to determine the relationships between specific sites of damage and severity of deficits in these three spatial tasks. Secondly, fMRI was used in 26 healthy controls who performed the same tasks. In the healthy group, fMRI results showed a differential activation of regions within the parietal and frontal lobes during bisection and visual search, respectively. In the patients, we confirmed a critical role of right lateral parietal cortex in bisection, but lesions in frontal and temporal lobe were more critical for visual search. These data support the existence of distinct components in spatial attentional processes that might be damaged to different degrees in neglect patients.

Selective Interruption of Auditory Interhemispheric Cross Talk Impairs Discrimination Learning of Frequency-Modulated Tone Direction But Not Gap Detection and Discrimination

Abstract:Functional hemispheric lateralization is a basic principle of brain organization. In the auditory domain, the right auditory cortex (AC) determines the pitch direction of continuous auditory stimuli whereas the left AC discriminates gaps in these stimuli. The involved functional interactions between the two sides, mediated by commissural connections, are poorly understood. Here, we selectively disrupted the interhemispheric cross talk from the left to the right primary AC and vice versa using chromophore-targeted laser-induced apoptosis of the respective projection neurons, which make up 6–17% of all AC neurons in Layers III, V, and VI. Following photolysis, male gerbils were trained in a first experimental set to discriminate between rising and falling frequency-modulated (FM) tone sweeps. The acquisition of the task was significantly delayed in lesioned animals of either lesion direction. However, the final discrimination performance and hit rate was lowest for animals with left-side lesioned commissural neurons, demonstrating that also information from the left AC is relevant for FM direction learning. Photolysis after successful learning did not affect the retrieval of the learned task, indicating that the disruption during learning was not because of a general functional impairment. In a second experimental set, the gerbil's ability to detect and discriminate small silent gaps of varying length within FM sweeps was tested. This ability was also preserved after interhemispheric disruption. Taken together, interhemispheric communication between the left and right AC is important for the acquisition of FM tone direction learning but not for its retrieval and for gap detection and gap duration discrimination. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Hemispheric lateralization of neuronal functions such as speech and music processing in humans are common throughout the brain; however, the involved interhemispheric interactions are ill-defined. Here, we show that the selective photolytic disruption of auditory cortical commissural connections in rodents impairs the acquisition but not retrieval of a frequency-modulated tone direction discrimination task. The final discrimination performance and hit rate was lowest for animals with lesioned left-to-right-side projections; thus, although right auditory cortex is dominant, left auditory cortex is also relevant for learning this task. The detection and discrimination of small gaps within the tone sweeps remain intact, suggesting a pathway for the processing of these temporal structures, which could be independent from the lesioned interhemispheric cross talk.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Symptoms of visuospatial neglect occur frequently after unilateral brain damage. Neglect hampers general rehabilitation progress and is associated with reduced quality of life. Some of the rehabilitation programs developed to treat neglect have demonstrated behavioral improvements. However, only a few of them have addressed specifically the anatomo-functional correlates associated behavioral improvement.METHOD: Here we describe the case of a patient (GV) with a severe left neglect disorder as a consequence of a right hemisphere stroke. Eighteen weeks after the onset, he underwent a 10-week intensive neuropsychological rehabilitation program. Functional MRI (fMRI) during execution of a covert attention task, and a broad neuropsychological assessment were conducted before and after the training.RESULTS: The results show a significant improvement of the performance in neglect tasks after the rehabilitation program, although the remission of symptoms was not complete. fMRI data showed that the behavioral improvement was accompanied by an increase of activity in the dorsal premotor cortex and middle frontal gyrus bilaterally. Other activations were present only in the contralesional left hemisphere, including supplementary motor area and superior temporal gyrus.CONCLUSIONS: The implications of the results are discussed. Discriminative value of different combinations of tests to detect unilateral neglect in patients with right hemisphere damage

Abstract:Background and purpose: This study was undertaken to assess the most sensitive combination of tests to detect peripersonal unilateral neglect (UN) after stroke. Methods: The present study is a secondary analysis of a previously reported multicentric study of 203 individuals with right hemisphere damage (RHD), mainly subacute stroke, 11 weeks postonset on average, and 307 healthy controls. A battery of seven tests, providing 19 age- and education-adjusted z-scores, were given: the bells test, line bisection, figure copying, clock drawing, overlapping figures test, and reading and writing. Statistical analyses used a logistic regression and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve after adjustment on demographic variables. Results: A combination of four z-scores based on the following three tests provided good discrimination of patients with RHD from matched healthy controls: the starting point and the difference between the number of omissions on left and right sides from the bells test, rightward deviation in bisection of long lines (20 cm), and left-sided omissions in a reading task. The area under the ROC curve was 0.865 (95% confidence interval = 0.83-0.901), with sensitivity = 0.68, specificity = 0.95, accuracy = 0.85, positive predictive value = 0.90, and negative predictive value = 0.82. Conclusions: The most sensitive and parsimonious combination of tests to detect UN after stroke relies on four scores from three simple tests (bells test, line bisection, and reading). Future study is warranted to assess its ability to account for the functional difficulties of UN in daily life in the patient's actual environment.
Comparison of uni- and multimodal motion stimulation on visual neglect: A proof-of-concept study

Abstract:Spatial neglect is characterized by the failure to attend stimuli presented in the contralesional space. Typically, the visual modality is more severely impaired than the auditory one. This dissociation offers the possibility of cross-modal interactions, whereby auditory stimuli may have beneficial effects on the visual modality. A new auditory motion stimulation method with music dynamically moving from the right to the left hemispace has recently been shown to improve visual neglect. The aim of the present study was twofold: a) to compare the effects of unimodal auditory against visual motion stimulation, i.e., smooth pursuit training, which is an established therapeutical approach in neglect therapy and b) to explore whether a combination of auditory + visual motion stimulation, i.e., multimodal motion stimulation, would be more effective than unimodal auditory or visual motion stimulation. 28 patients with left-sided neglect due to a first-ever, right-hemispheric subacute stroke were included. Patients either received auditory, visual, or multimodal motion stimulation. The between-group effect of each motion stimulation condition as well as a control group without motion stimulation was investigated by means of a one-way ANOVA with the patient's visual exploration behaviour as an outcome variable. Our results showed that unimodal auditory motion stimulation is equally effective as unimodal visual motion stimulation: both interventions significantly improved neglect compared to the control group. Multimodal motion stimulation also significantly improved neglect, however, did not show greater improvement than unimodal auditory or visual motion stimulation alone. Besides the established visual motion stimulation, this proof-of-concept study suggests that auditory motion stimulation seems to be an alternative promising therapeutic approach to improve visual attention in neglect patients. Multimodal motion stimulation does not lead to any additional therapeutic gain. In neurorehabilitation, the implementation of either auditory or visual motion stimulation seems therefore reasonable.
Anterior insula and inferior frontal gyrus: where ventral and dorsal visual attention systems meet

Abstract:Abstract The clinical link between spatial and non-spatial attentional aspects in patients with hemispatial neglect is well known; in particular, an increase in alerting can transitorily help to allocate attention towards the contralesional side. In models of attention, this phenomenon is postulated to rely on an interaction between ventral and dorsal cortical networks, subtending non-spatial and spatial attentional aspects, respectively. However, the exact neural underpinnings of the interaction between these two networks are still poorly understood. In the present study, we included 80 right-hemispheric patients with subacute stroke (50% women; age range: 24–96), 33 with and 47 without neglect, as assessed by paper–pencil cancellation tests. The patients performed a computerized task in which they were asked to respond as quickly as possible by button-press to central targets, which were either preceded or not preceded by non-spatial, auditory warning tones. Reaction times in the two different conditions were measured. In neglect patients, a warning tone, enhancing activity within the ventral attentional ‘alerting’ network, could boost the reaction (in terms of shorter reaction times) of the dorsal attentional network to a visual stimulus up to the level of patients without neglect. Critically, using voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping analyses, we show that this effect significantly depends on the integrity of the right anterior insula and adjacent inferior frontal gyrus, i.e., right-hemispheric patients with lesions involving these areas were significantly less likely to show shorter reaction times when a warning tone was presented prior to visual target appearance. We propose that the right anterior insula and inferior frontal gyrus are a critical hub through which the ventral attentional network can ‘alert’ and increase the efficiency of the activity of the dorsal attentional network.
Capturing Visual Attention With Perturbed Auditory Spatial Cues

Abstract:Lateralized sounds can orient visual attention, with benefits for audio-visual processing. Here, we asked to what extent perturbed auditory spatial cues-resulting from cochlear implants (CI) or unilateral hearing loss (uHL)-allow this automatic mechanism of information selection from the audio-visual environment. We used a classic paradigm from experimental psychology (capture of visual attention with sounds) to probe the integrity of audio-visual attentional orienting in 60 adults with hearing loss: bilateral CI users (N = 20), unilateral CI users (N = 20), and individuals with uHL (N = 20). For comparison, we also included a group of normal-hearing (NH, N = 20) participants, tested in binaural and monaural listening conditions (i.e., with one ear plugged). All participants also completed a sound localization task to assess spatial hearing skills. Comparable audio-visual orienting was observed in bilateral CI, uHL, and binaural NH participants. By contrast, audio-visual orienting was, on average, absent in unilateral CI users and reduced in NH listening with one ear plugged. Spatial hearing skills were better in bilateral CI, uHL, and binaural NH participants than in unilateral CI users and monaurally plugged NH listeners. In unilateral CI users, spatial hearing skills correlated with audio-visual-orienting abilities. These novel results show that audio-visual-attention orienting can be preserved in bilateral CI users and in uHL patients to a greater extent than unilateral CI users. This highlights the importance of assessing the impact of hearing loss beyond auditory difficulties alone: to capture to what extent it may enable or impede typical interactions with the multisensory environment.
Sensory and response contributions to visual awareness in extinction

Abstract:Brain-damaged patients may extinguish contralesional stimuli when ipsilesional stimuli are presented simultaneously. Most theories of extinction postulate that stimuli compete for pathologically limited attentional resources with a bias to process ipsilesional over contralesional stimuli. Implicit in this view is the idea that responses follow the outcome of an earlier competition between inputs. In the current study of two patients, we used signal detection analyses to test the hypothesis that response criteria and response modalities also contribute to visual awareness. We found that identification was more sensitive than detection in uncovering deficits of contralesional awareness. Extinction was worse with bilateral stimuli when the ipsilesional stimulus was identical or similar to the target than when it was dissimilar. This diminished awareness was more likely to reflect a shift towards more conservative responses rather than diminished discrimination of contralesional stimuli. By contrast, one patient was better able to discriminate contralesional stimuli when using his contralesional limb to indicate awareness of targets than when using his ipsilesional limb. These data indicate that the nature of stimuli can modulate response criteria and the motor response can affect the sensory discriminability. Sensory discrimination and response output are not organized in a simple serial manner. Rather, input and output parameters interact in complicated ways to produce visual awareness. Visual awareness itself appears to be the outcome of two bottlenecks in processing, one having to do with sensory processing that may be covert and the other having to do with decision making, which by definition is overt. Finally, we advocate the use of signal detection analyses in studies of extinction, a method that has been surprisingly neglected in this line of research.
