Abstract:Chip multiprocessor presents brand new opportunities for holistic on-chip data and coherence management solutions. An intelligent protocol should be adaptive to the fine-grain accessing behavior. And in terms of storage of metadata, the size of conventional directory grows as the square of the number of processors, making it very expensive in large-scale systems. In this paper, we propose a metadata cache framework to achieve three goals: 1) reducing the latency of data access and coherence activities, 2) saving the storage of metadata, and 3) providing support for other optimization techniques. The metadata is implemented with compact structures and tracks the dynamically changing access pattern. The pattern information is used to guide the delegation and replication of decoupled data and metadata to allow fast access. We also use our metadata cache as a building block to enhance stream prefetching. Using detailed execution-driven simulation, we demonstrate that our protocol achieves an average speedup of 1.12X compared with a shared cache protocol with 1/5 of the storage of metadata.

Abstract:The programmable switch offers a limited capacity of packet header vector (PHV) words that store packet header fields and metadata fields defined by network functions. However, existing switch compilers employ inefficient strategies of encoding fields on PHV words. Their encoding wastes scarce PHV words and may result in failures when deploying network functions. In this paper, we propose Melody, a new framework that reuses PHV words for as many fields as possible to achieve resource-efficient PHV encoding. Melody offers a field analyzer and an optimization framework. The analyzer identifies which fields can reuse PHV words while preserving the original packet processing logic. The framework integrates analysis results into its encoding to offer the resource-optimal decisions. We evaluate Melody with production-scale network functions. Our results show that Melody reduces the consumption of PHV words by up to 85%.

Abstract:Music as an emotional intervention medium has important applications in scenarios such as music therapy, games, and movies. However, music needs real-time arrangement according to changing emotions, bringing challenges to balance emotion real-time fit and soft emotion transition due to the fine-grained and mutable nature of the target emotion. Existing studies mainly focus on achieving emotion real-time fit, while the issue of smooth transition remains understudied, affecting the overall emotional coherence of the music. In this paper, we propose REMAST to address this trade-off. Specifically, we recognize the last timestep's music emotion and fuse it with the current timestep's input emotion. The fused emotion then guides REMAST to generate the music based on the input melody. To adjust music similarity and emotion real-time fit flexibly, we downsample the original melody and feed it into the generation model. Furthermore, we design four music theory features by domain knowledge to enhance emotion information and employ semi-supervised learning to mitigate the subjective bias introduced by manual dataset annotation. According to the evaluation results, REMAST surpasses the state-of-the-art methods in objective and subjective metrics. These results demonstrate that REMAST achieves real-time fit and smooth transition simultaneously, enhancing the coherence of the generated music.
AsyncFS: Metadata Updates Made Asynchronous for Distributed Filesystems with In-Network Coordination

Abstract:Distributed filesystems typically employ synchronous metadata updates, facing inherent challenges for access efficiency, load balancing, and directory contention, especially under dynamic and skewed workloads. This paper argues that synchronous updates are overly conservative for distributed filesystems. We propose AsyncFS with asynchronous metadata updates, allowing operations to return early and defer directory updates until respective read to enable latency hiding and conflict resolution. The key challenge is efficiently maintaining the synchronous semantics of metadata updates. To address this, AsyncFS is co-designed with a programmable switch, leveraging the constrained on-switch resources to holistically track directory states in the network with negligible cost. This allows AsyncFS to timely aggregate and efficiently apply delayed updates using batching and consolidation before directory reads. Evaluation shows that AsyncFS achieves up to 13.34$\times$ and 3.85$\times$ higher throughput, and 61.6% and 57.3% lower latency than two state-of-the-art distributed filesystems, InfiniFS and CFS-KV, respectively, on skewed workloads. For real-world workloads, AsyncFS improves end-to-end throughput by 21.1$\times$, 1.1$\times$ and 30.1% over Ceph, IndexFS and CFS-KV, respectively.

Abstract:Existing block-based parallel file systems, which are deployed in the storage area network (SAN), blend metadata with data in underlying disks. Unfortunately, such symmetric architecture is prone to system-level failures, as metadata on shared disks can be damaged by a malfunctioning client. In this paper, we present an asymmetric block-based parallel file system, Redbud, which isolates the metadata storage in the metadata server (MDS) access domain. Although centralized metadata management can effectively improve the reliability of the system, it faces some challenges in providing high performance and availability. Towards this end, we introduce an embedded directory mechanism to explore the disk bandwidth of the metadata storage; we also introduces adaptive layout operations to deliver high I/O throughput for various file access pattern. Besides, by taking the MDS's load into consideration, we propose an adaptive timeout algorithm to make the MDS failure detection adaptive to the evolving workloads, improving the system availability. Measurements of a wide range of workloads demonstrate the benefit of our design and that Redbud gains good scalability.

Abstract:With the increasing scale of distributed resources, which couples a wide variety of geographically distributed computational resources, storage systems, data sources and computational kernels, service management and scheduling is a complex undertaking. Since most services on the Internet are mutually independent, users have trouble in accessing several services to achieve a single purpose. Furthermore, the resources are owned by different individuals or organizations with their own policies, have different access and cost models, and have dynamically varying loads and availability.To address the confronted issues, we propose an adaptive approach in this paper for distributed services composition and allocation, which is service-centric and workflow-oriented. We use XML to describe the services by encoding such factors as resource configuration, performance, and service-specific capabilities, which enables services to be easily developed, composed, deployed, relocated, monitored and managed in distributed environments. We use service composition technology to construct composite service by combining several independent services, which can be considered as the element services of the composite service, executed as workflow process. The allocation of such element services Will be decided dynamically due to the economic objective function to address the issues of adaptation, availability, performance and economic cost.
HybridFS - A High Performance and Balanced File System Framework with Multiple Distributed File Systems

Abstract:In the big data era, the distributed file system is getting more and more significant due to the characteristics of its scale-out capability, high availability, and high performance. Different distributed file systems may have different design goals. For example, some of them are designed to have good performance for small file operations, such as GlusterFS, while some of them are designed for large file operations, such as Hadoop distributed file system. With the divergence of big data applications, a distributed file system may provide good performance for some applications but fails for some other applications, that is, there has no universal distributed file system that can produce good performance for all applications. In this paper, we propose a hybrid file system framework, HybridFS, which can deliver satisfactory performance for all applications. HybridFS is composed of multiple distributed file systems with the integration of advantages of these distributed file systems. In HybridFS, on top of multiple distributed file systems, we have designed a metadata management server to perform three functions: file placement, partial metadata store, and dynamic file migration. The file placement is performed based on a decision tree. The partial metadata store is performed for files whose size is less than a few hundred Bytes to increase throughput. The dynamic file migration is performed to balance the storage usage of distributed file systems without throttling performance. We have implemented HybridFS in java on eight nodes and choose Ceph, HDFS, and GlusterFS as designated distributed file systems. The experimental results show that, in the best case, HybridFS can have up to 30% performance improvement of read/write operations over a single distributed file system. In addition, if the difference of storage usage among multiple distributed file systems is less than 40%, the performance of HybridFS is guaranteed, that is, no performance degradation.

Abstract:In the near future, Ambient Intelligence (AmI) will become part of everyday life. Combining feature-rich multimedia with AmI (dubbed Ambient Multimedia for short) has the potential of changing the way we perceive and interact with our environment. One major difficulty, however, in designing Ambient Multimedia Systems (AMS) comes from the strong constraints imposed on system resources by the AmI application requirements. In this paper, we propose a method for mapping multimedia applications on systems with very limited resources (i.e. memory, computing capability and battery lifetime) by combining adaptive data partitioning with dynamic power management. The potential of the approach is illustrated through a case study of an object tracking application running on a resource-constrained platform.
Adaptive Asynchronous Work-Stealing for distributed load-balancing in heterogeneous systems

Abstract:Supercomputers have revolutionized how industries and scientific fields process large amounts of data. These machines group hundreds or thousands of computing nodes working together to execute time-consuming programs that require a large amount of computational resources. Over the years, supercomputers have expanded to include new and different technologies characterizing them as heterogeneous. However, executing a program in a heterogeneous environment requires attention to a specific aspect of performance degradation: load imbalance. In this research, we address the challenges associated with load imbalance when scheduling many homogeneous tasks in a heterogeneous environment. To address this issue, we introduce the concept of adaptive asynchronous work-stealing. This approach collects information about the nodes and utilizes it to improve work-stealing aspects, such as victim selection and task offloading. Additionally, the proposed approach eliminates the need for extra threads to communicate information, thereby reducing overhead when implementing a fully asynchronous approach. Our experimental results demonstrate a performance improvement of approximately 10.1\% compared to other conventional and state-of-the-art implementations.

Abstract:Abstract: We present a new class of multimedia applications where the exploitation of the principle of globaltime- based coordination of distributed actions (TCoDA) is compelling. In these applications, multiple smallfootprint PCs, each equipped with its own speakers, act as instrument players or singers forming an ensemble. Each player PC obtains its piece of the musical audio data over an Ethernet network from a central server containing all necessary audio files. An important requirement is thus to make multiple specialized players, e.g., violin player, cello player, piano player, etc., perform globally synchronous play of their responsible pieces of the music. Moreover, to enable fast start of the requested music play, the musical data are streamed from the server to each player in a pipelined fashion so that while each player is playing one part of the music, the next part may be arriving over the network. Efficient implementation techniques based on the TMO programming scheme are then presented. This digital music ensemble application turns out to be an interesting cost-effective means of evaluating the QoS of the middleware supporting TCoDA. A prototype implementation of a digital music ensemble system was relatively easily realized by use of the TMO programming scheme.
A Highly Reliable Metadata Service for Large-Scale Distributed File Systems

Abstract:Many massive data processing applications nowadays often need long, continuous, and uninterrupted data accesses. Distributed file systems are used as the back-end storage to provide the global namespace management and reliability guarantee. Due to increasing hardware failures and software issues with the growing system scale, metadata service reliability has become a critical issue as it has a direct impact on file and directory operations. Existing metadata management mechanisms can provide fault tolerance capability to some level but are inadequate. They often have limitations in system availability, state consistence, and performance overhead and lack an effective mechanism to offer metadata reliability. This paper introduces a novel highly reliable metadata service to address these issues in large-scale file systems. Different from traditional strategies, this proposed reliable metadata service adopts a new active-standby architecture for fault tolerance and uses a holistic approach to improve file system availability. A new shared storage pool (SSP) is designed for transparent metadata synchronization and replication between active and standby servers. Based on the SSP, a new policy called multiple actives multiple standbys (MAMS) is presented to perform metadata service recovery in case of failures. A new global state recovery strategy and a smart client fault tolerance mechanism are achieved to maintain the continuity of metadata service. We have implemented such highly reliable metadata service in a prototype file system CFS (Clover file system) and conducted extensive tests to evaluate it. Experimental results confirm that it can significantly improve file system reliability with fast failover under different failure scenarios while having negligible influence on performance. Compared with typical reliability designs in Hadoop Avatar, Hadoop HA, and Boom-FS file systems, the mean-time-to-recovery (MTTR) with the highly reliable metadata service was reduced by 80.23, 65.46 and 28.13 percent, respectively.

Abstract:Emerging high performance non-volatile memories recall the importance of efficient file system design. To avoid the virtual file system (VFS) and syscall overhead as in these kernel-based file systems, recent works deploy file systems directly in user level. Unfortunately, a userlevel file system can easily be corrupted by a buggy program with misused pointers, and is hard to scale on multi-core platforms which incorporates a centralized coordination service. In this paper, we propose KucoFS, a Kernel and user-level collaborative file system. It consists of two parts: a user-level library with direct-access interfaces, and a kernel thread, which performs metadata updates and enforces write protection by toggling the permission bits in the page table. Hence, KucoFS achieves both direct-access of user-level designs and fine-grained write protection of kernel-level ones. We further explore its scalability to multicores: For metadata scalability, KucoFS rebalances the pathname resolution overhead between the kernel and userspace, by adopting the index offloading technique. For data access efficiency, it coordinates the data allocation between kernel and userspace, and uses range-lock write and lock-free read to improve concurrency. Experiments on Optane DC persistent memory show that KucoFS significantly outperforms existing file systems and shows better scalability.

Abstract:A performance-optimizing dependable virtual storage scheme is proposed to improve both the data-accessing performance and availability for distributed storage systems to meet user's different requirements. The storage system improves the storage security by encrypting command message between servers and storage nodes. It also provides the two-level address-mapping and request-decomposing computation to hide the implementation of storage nodes, to increase the capability of distributed computation, and to implement two types of storage layout. The scheme takes not only both homo- and hetero-geneous storage nodes into account, but also protect the integrity of the storage system behaviors based on distributed environments.

Abstract:Object-based parallel file systems have emerged as promising storage solutions for high-performance computing (HPC) systems. Despite the fact that object storage provides a flexible interface, scheduling highly concurrent I/O requests that access a large number of objects still remains as a challenging problem, especially in the case when stragglers (storage servers that are significantly slower than others) exist in the system. An efficient I/O scheduler needs to avoid possible stragglers to achieve low latency and high throughput. In this paper, we introduce a log-assisted straggler-aware I/O scheduling to mitigate the impact of storage server stragglers. The contribution of this study is threefold. First, we introduce a client-side, log-assisted, straggler-aware I/O scheduler architecture to tackle the storage straggler issue in HPC systems. Second, we present three scheduling algorithms that can make efficient decision for scheduling I/Os while avoiding stragglers based on such an architecture. Third, we evaluate the proposed I/O scheduler using simulations, and the simulation results have confirmed the promise of the newly introduced straggler-aware I/O scheduler.

Abstract:We introduce Kuco, a novel direct-access file system architecture whose main goal is scalability. Kuco utilizes three key techniques - collaborative indexing, two-level locking, and versioned reads - to offload time-consuming tasks, such as pathname resolution and concurrency control, from the kernel to userspace, thus avoiding kernel processing bottlenecks. Upon Kuco, we present the design and implementation of KucoFS, and then experimentally show that KucoFS has excellent performance in a wide range of experiments; importantly, KucoFS scales better than existing file systems by up to an order of magnitude for metadata operations, and fully exploits device bandwidth for data operations.

Abstract:With the decreasing price of multimedia capturing and processing devices, as well as the capability to capture more complex, and sophisticated objectives, multimedia systems are facine the challenge of large data analysis and management. How to handle real-time capturing, compressing, transferring, decompressing as well as information representation and management in a multimedia system has become an important research topic. We propose a real-time distributed multimedia system framework for dynamic context environment based on a survey of the requirements of multimedia systems under dynamic context environment. It can be divided into two parts, the software infrastructure and the information system, fusing all needed functions in a real-time distributed multimedia system into a unique framework. The former is used to encapsulate the function of capturing, compressing, and decompressing and so on, isolating logical functions from physical devices. The latter is used for information representation, isolating information from special capturing or processing devices, and it also provides the capacity of information management, which means users can search for specified information later. The experiments of the meeting system based on this frame show the openness, configurability and extensibility of our framework.
Adaptive file-grain distribution in a cluster file system

Abstract:The increasing load and diverse users' access patterns of today's cluster file servers prompt for a flexible file system design that can achieve dynamic load balancing across multiple nodes. This requirement becomes more necessary and complicated when the cluster is inevitably heterogeneous and non-dedicated. Realizing that current cluster file systems do not take those complexities into account, we present an adaptive, light-weight file-grain data distribution mechanism in TH-CluFS, a portable cluster file system developed in Tsinghua University. Profiting from the flexibility of the per file policy, this approach combines static file allocation with dynamic file migration effectively. It not only tailors file system behavior to environmental changes and individual file's characteristics, but also introduces little overhead with a decentralized mechanism and running expensive dynamic file migration component only when some nodes become overloaded. Preliminary analyses and experiments with our prototype have yielded good results, although mathematical validation and practical studies are still underway.

Abstract:As a new computing paradigm, mobile edge computing (MEC) pushes the centralized cloud resources close to the edge network, which significantly reduces the pressure of the backbone network and meets the requirements of emerging mobile applications. To achieve high performance of the MEC system, it is essential to design efficient task offloading and service placement schemes, which are responsible for offloading tasks to the edge servers while considering the heterogeneity and diversity of computation services. Our MEC system aims to maximize the long-term average network utility while maintaining the stability of the edge network. Considering that synchronous manner overlooks the scenarios endowed with asymmetric update frequencies for service placement and task offloading, we propose an online algorithm based on the two-timescale Lyapunov optimization in a stochastic network environment without requiring the future information. By making asynchronous decisions on service placement and task offloading with different control parameters $V$, we can achieve a time-average sub-optimal solution that is close to the offline optimum. In addition, we introduce the varying control parameter $V(t)$ and $\Omega$-additive approximation to enhance the robustness of the proposed algorithm within an error $\Omega$. Finally, rigorous theoretical analysis and extensive trace-driven experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the $[O(1/V), O(V)]$ performance-backlog tradeoff and is more competitive than benchmarks.

Abstract:In space science research, the Indonesia National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) is concerned with the development of a system that provides actual information and predictions called the Space Weather Information and Forecast Services (SWIFtS). SWIFtS is supported by a data storage system that serves data, implementing a centralized storage model. This has some problems that impact to researchers as the primary users. The single point of failure and also the delay in data updating on the server is a significant issue when researchers need the latest data, but the server is unable to provide it. To overcome these problems, we proposed a new system that utilized a decentralized model for storing data, leveraging the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) file system. Our proposed method focused on the automated background process, and its scheme would increase the data availability and throughput by spreading it into nodes through a peer-to-peer connection. Moreover, we also included system monitoring for real-time data flow from each node and information of node status that combines active and passive approaches. For system evaluation, the experiment was performed to determine the performance of the proposed system compared to the existing system by calculating mean replication time and the mean throughput of a node. As expected, performance evaluations showed that our proposed scheme had faster file replication time and supported high throughput.
