Abstract:In this work, high strength, flexible and cycling-stable piezoresistive thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite foams were fabricated by a solution-blending method and supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) foaming process. The micriocellular structure (1-10 mu m) of the TPU/MWCNTs composites enhanced the energy storage and reduced the conductive percolation threshold. The compressive strength and compressive modulus of the composites were 1.05 MPa and 3.79 MPa. Percolation threshold of the foamed composites decreased from 0.90 vol% to 0.31 vol%. The prepared TPUC5.0 foam (the content of MWCNTs is 5%) had high sensitivity, wide strain range, and stable resistance. The piezoresistive current was relatively stable, and showed high repetitive force-electric conversion behavior in 1000 cycles. Thus, polymeric foams are suitable for real-time monitoring of human foot movement using wearable strain sensors.

Abstract:In this work, we dissolved the alpha-cellulose in pre-cooled sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and thiourea solution, and dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in solution with the help of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), then cross-linked for 48h to form a gel. The gel was placed in distilled water to displace the sodium hydroxide. After the distilled water was neutral, the gel was freeze-dried to obtain a cellulose/MWCNTs aerogel. We prepared cellulose aerogel with 10 wt% MWCNTs, its density is 139.64 mg/cm(3). Next, using the aerogel as a template, the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was cast into the aerogel by solution method to obtain a cellulose/TPU/MWCNTs composite. The composite is then foamed by supercritical CO2, the pressure was maintained at 13.8 MPa and the temperature was maintained at 100 degrees C. The cell size of TPU is about 10 mu m and the density is 414.79 mg/cm(3). Besides, the compression modulus and compressive strength at 10% compression strain of foaming composite are 0.62 MPa and0.059 MPa.
Study on the Foaming Behaviors of PBS and its Modification with PA6IcoT Assisted by scCO2

Abstract:The foaming behaviors of a semicrystalline poly(butylenes succinate) (PBS) and its blends with an amorphous semiaromatic nylon poly(hexamethylene (iso-co-tere)phthalamide) (PA6IcoT) assisted by supercritical CO2 (scCO(2)) as blowing agent at 110-130 degrees C and 16-24 MPa are investigated. The results show that the average cell diameter and cell density of the pure PBS foam obtained at 24 MPa and 120 degrees C are 46 mu m and 1.6 x 10(7) cells cm(-3), respectively. The cell coalescence is prevented and heterogeneous nucleation is induced in the presence of PA6IcoT in the physical blends (mPBS), resulting smaller cell size as 12 mu m and higher cell density as 1.6 x 10(9) cells cm(-3) in the foams at 24 MPa and 120 degrees C. The reactive blends (rPBS) with PA6IcoT prepared by 2,2-(1,3-benzene)bis(2-oxazoline) (PBO) as chain extender are promising for higher complex viscosity and lower crystallinity, resulting in higher melt strength and better foamability. The rPBS foams with cell size as small as 8 mu m and cell density as high as 2.0 x 10(9) cells cm(-3) are obtained at 24 MPa and 120 degrees C.

Abstract:Dielectric materials with ultralow dielectric constant, excellent mechanical properties, and good thermal stability have a broader application prospect in microelectronic devices with the rapid growth of 5G communication systems. On this basis, a series of lightweight polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN)/PSS‐octamethyl substituted (POSS) foams have been prepared by supercritical carbon dioxide foaming technique combining the strategy of low dielectric constant POSS doping and the introduction of bubbles. The effects of the introduction of POSS and foaming temperature on the foaming behavior of PEN/POSS composites are studied. The density of PEN/POSS foam with 5 wt% POSS is as low as 0.208 g cm−3 and the homologous porosity is up to 82.1%, which realizes the lightweight preparation of engineering plastics. Due to the introduction of POSS and pores, the PEN/POSS foam exhibits an ultralow dielectric constant of 1.83 at 1 kHz, while the dielectric loss is as low as 0.0036 and high thermal stability (Td5 > 453 °C). In addition, the specific modulus of PEN/POSS foam is up to 1.07 GPa cm−3 g−1 due to the high performance of the PEN. These excellent properties make PEN/POSS foams have great potential in the application of microelectronic devices. Combining the strategy of low dielectric constant (k) POSS doping and the introduction of bubbles, lightweight PEN/POSS composite foams with ultralow k (1.83 at 1 kHz), excellent mechanical properties (specific modulus: 1.07 GPa cm−3 g−1), and high thermal stability (Td5 > 453 °C) are prepared through eco‐friendly supercritical carbon dioxide foaming technology, which has great potential in the application of microelectronic devices.

Abstract:Polyimide (PI) foam exhibits excellent high-temperature resistance and outstanding physical and chemical stability, making it an ideal matrix for absorbing materials. However, the growing demand for absorbing materials that can serve as load-bearing components has revealed that existing polyimide composite foams often fall short of practical application requirements due to their low mechanical properties. The study employed a simple foaming method using isocyanate-based polyimide as the foam base under a 0.2 MPa atmosphere. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbonyl iron (CI) powder were added sequentially to the precursor solution. Under the filling parameters of 2.0% MWCNTs and 10% CI powder, the compressive strength of polyimide composite foam reaches 16.2 MPa and exhibits excellent microwave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of -62.51 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.86 GHz. Additionally, the prepared composite foam has potential infrared stealth capability. This work offers new insights for rapid and low-cost manufacturing of high-strength absorbing foam.

Abstract:For polymer foams, a high expansion rate is often required to obtain a low thermal conductivity. However, polymer foams with high expansion ratio faces a difficulty of shape recovery. In this work, polystyrene (PS)/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite foams were prepared by the synergy of ultrasound and H2O in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) foaming. The introduction of ultrasound and H2O is beneficial to improving expansion ratio. CNTs can enhance the melt strength of PS/PMMA, which also absorb part of the thermal radiation. Therefore, the PS/PMMA/CNTs foams with 0.5 wt% CNTs exhibits the high expansion ratio (80.7 times), low thermal conductivity (25.98 mW/mK) and 100% compression recovery in water at 85 °C after one compression. In addition, with the increasing of filler contents, the reusability of the foam is further improved. After ten compressions, the PS/PMMA/CNTs foams with 2 wt% CNTs still achieve the 99% recovery. This work provides a new way to prepare polymer foams with super-insulation and reusability.

Abstract:The demand for high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composite foams with satisfactory environmental friendliness and high sustainability has increased considerably. However, considerable obstacles are frequently encountered in the practical development of incorporating upcycling of plastic wastes and environmentally friendly foaming technologies into the manufacture of such EMI shielding systems. In this research, we developed a lightweight sustainable nanocomposite foam system with outstanding EMI shielding performance from the integration of chemical upcycling of recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO 2 ) microcellular foaming. First, a green thermoplastic polyamide elastomer (TPAE) system was synthesized using a renewable bis(6-aminohexyl)terephthalamide (BAHT) monomer derived through the aminolysis of recycled PET, followed by adding single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into the TPAE system for the manufacture of TPAE/SWCNT nanocomposites. The π–π stacking of BAHT efficiently enhanced the melt strength of the material system, which was conducive for microcellular foaming process. After sc-CO 2 foaming, a series of highly expanded nanocomposite foams with uniform microporous structure that could enable multiple reflections of electromagnetic waves were fabricated. Upon adding only 2 wt% SWCNTs, the foam system achieved a favorable conductivity of 0.15 S/cm and an extremely high specific shielding effectiveness (SSE) of 213.26 (dB cm 3 /g). Furthermore, the green nanocomposite foam possessed excellent durability. After being bent or twisted 1000 times, the foam maintained EMI shielding effectiveness of > 90% of the original value. Moreover, the foam could be easily recycled, reprocessed, and refoamed. For developing sustainable EMI shielding products, we believe that this study provides a promising direction with benefits of alleviating waste accumulation and reducing the use of virgin plastics in manufacture of foams, showing potential for advanced sustainable electronic applications.

Abstract:Syntactic foam composite (SFC) has the potential to substitute the conventional material used in damage-tolerance, thermal insulation, and weight-sensitive applications such as automotive parts, submarine structures, etc. Here, SFCs were developed by varying the weight fraction of cenosphere (CS) content from 0-40 wt. % in a polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) matrix. This investigation provides the terse behavior of the viscoelastic properties of 3D-printed PETG/CS foam composites. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed that the initial degradation temperature (T i ) and the temperature at 50% mass loss (T 50 ) of the composite filament increased with the addition of CS particles, indicating improved thermal stability. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results revealed that the storage modulus of SFC increased with increasing cenosphere content. The foam composite's glass transition temperature (78.9 ± 0.35 °C) is lower by 4 °C than pure PETG. This underscores the potential of the developed syntactic foam composite to effectively utilize industrial waste fly ash through 3D printing routine, thereby promoting sustainable manufacturing practices.

Abstract:Poly aryletherketone chemically modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes/poly etheretherketone ( PAEK-m-CNTs/PEEK) electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding foams were fabricated using supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc-CO 2 ) foaming technique saturated near-melting point ( T m ). The percolation thresholds for conductivity and EMI shielding of PAEK-m-CNTs/PEEK foams were both significantly reduced by the presence of the porous structure, reaching to 0.0457 vol% and 0.123 vol%, respectively. These reductions were observed to be 87.72 % and 75.20 % of those of PAEK-m-CNTs/PEEK composites. This could be attributed to the heterogeneous nucleation of PAEK-m-CNTs, which are uniformly dispersed in PEEK, in addition to the Sc-CO 2 foaming technique saturated near T m . By comparison, it could be observed that the specific total electromagnetic shield effectiveness ( SSE Total ) of PAEK-m-CNTs/PEEK foam with a filler content of 0.440 vol% was 687.9 % higher than that of PAEK-m-CNTs/PEEK composite with a filler content of 0.496 vol%. Moreover, the introduction of the porous structure transformed the electromagnetic shielding material from reflective to absorptive. In addition, PAEK-m-CNTs/PEEK foams demonstrated the capacity to maintain stable performance even in high temperatures of up to 315 °C and in the presence of strong corrosive media.

Abstract:Integration of a foam structure into a shielding material not only reduces its mass density but also enhances its electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance. In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite films and foams consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and bulk Ti3C2Tx MXenes were fabricated. Prominent anisotropy with high in-plane electrical conductivity (sigma(parallel to)) and low through-plane electrical conductivity (sigma(perpendicular to)) was achieved (e.g., sigma(parallel to )= 17.02 S/m and sigma(perpendicular to) = 0.42 S/m with 1 wt% MXenes) in the composite films due to the aligned structure of the MXenes in the PVDF matrix. With CO2-assisted foaming, the intercalation of PVDF chains and cell-induced biaxial stretch facilitated reorganized orientation and delamination of the MXenes. Consequently, sigma(parallel to) decreased and sigma(perpendicular to) increased, and exhibiting an isotropic feature. Furthermore, the integration of the foam structure resulted in an increased sigma(perpendicular to), which improved the EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) to 65.1 dB at a MXene content of 12 wt%, owing to enhanced multi-reflections, dielectric loss and conduction loss. Moreover, the shielding effectiveness coming from reflection was reduced to lower than 3 dB due to the decrease in sigma(parallel to) and destructive interference in the composite foam, thus leading to an absorption-dominated mechanism. Additionally, the prepared composite foams exhibited outstanding thermal conductivity and mechanical strength, enabling them to be used as lightweight and robust EMI shielding materials that could transform EM wave energy into Joule heat.
In Situ Nanofibrillar Polypropylene-Based Composite Microcellular Foams with Enhanced Mechanical and Flame-Retardant Performances

Abstract:With the increasing demand for plastic components, the development of lightweight, high strength and functionalized polypropylene (PP) from a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process is critical for resource conservation. In situ fibrillation (INF) and supercritical CO2 (scCO2) foaming technology were combined in this work to fabricate PP foams. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and poly(diaryloxyphosphazene)(PDPP) particles were applied to fabricate in situ fibrillated PP/PET/PDPP composite foams with enhanced mechanical properties and favorable flame-retardant performance. The existence of PET nanofibrils with a diameter of 270 nm were uniformly dispersed in PP matrix and served multiple roles by tuning melt viscoelasticity for improving microcellular foaming behavior, enhancing crystallization of PP matrix and contributing to improving the uniformity of PDPP's dispersion in INF composite. Compared to pure PP foam, PP/PET(F)/PDPP foam exhibited refined cellular structures, thus the cell size of PP/PET(F)/PDPP foam was decreased from 69 to 23 μm, and the cell density increased from 5.4 × 106 to 1.8 × 108 cells/cm3. Furthermore, PP/PET(F)/PDPP foam showed remarkable mechanical properties, including a 975% increase in compressive stress, which was attributed to the physical entangled PET nanofibrils and refined cellular structure. Moreover, the presence of PET nanofibrils also improved the intrinsic flame-retardant nature of PDPP. The synergistical effect of the PET nanofibrillar network and low loading of PDPP additives inhibited the combustion process. These gathered advantages of PP/PET(F)/PDPP foam make it promising for lightweight, strong, and fire-retardant polymeric foams.
Improved electromagnetic interference shielding performance of silicone rubber/CNTs composites by porous structure design via green supercritical CO 2 foaming

Abstract:In this study, the relationship between porous structure and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance of polymer foams is established. A green supercritical CO 2 foaming technology is utilized to construct silicone rubber (PMVS)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) foams with tunable porous structures (porosity, cell size, cell density and cell gradient structure). Notably, the introduction of moderate porosity (within 40 %) simultaneously enhanced the total EMI shielding effectiveness ( SE T ) and absorption coefficient ( A ). PMVS/CNTs foam reached a maximum SE T of 62.3 dB, a 35.4 % increase over solid PMVS/CNTs composite. Additionally, small-cell PMVS/CNTs foam shows a higher A n under the same porosity, while large-cell foam exhibits higher SE T . Moreover, gradient porous PMVS/CNTs, combining advantages of large and small cells, maintains a high A (78 %) and exhibits superior SE T (52.7 dB), along with exceptional EMI shielding stability (with SE T and A retaining 97.7 % and 99 %, respectively, after 1000 cycles of compression). This work provides a theoretical foundation for optimizing EMI shielding performance by regulating porous structures.

Abstract:Lightweight and robust electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are highly desirable in high-end precision electronic components and 5G communication system. Herein, the starch based porous carbon foam (PCF) is prepared by yeast fermentation, steam foaming and carbonization approach with flour as raw material. The Ti3C2Tx MXene/PCF (MPCF) composites are then fabricated via vacuum assisted impregnation of Ti3C2Tx MXene followed by freeze drying. The obtained PCF presents excellent compression strength and superior electrical properties. The compression strength and electrical conductivity (σ) of the PCF carbonized at 1400 °C are 4.9 MPa and 21.8 S/cm, respectively. The MPCF composites with 8.5 wt% Ti3C2Tx MXene exhibits superior EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) and specific shielding effectiveness (SSE, EMI SE/ρ) of 75 dB and 216.9 dB cm3/g, respectively. Meanwhile, the MPCF composites possess excellent flame retardancy and outstanding heat insulation performances, and can be applied in the extreme environments. The resultant lightweight, robust and multifunctional MPCF composites with simple fabrication processes show broad application prospects for EMI shielding systems in aerospace, military engineering, electrical and electronics fields.

Thus, electromagnetic interference shielding materials have recently garnered extensive attention. In this study, a multi‐walled carbon nanotube/polyurethane/nonwoven electromagnetic shielding material (CPNW) was developed using impregnation and nonsolvent induce phase separation techniques. Utilizing a three‐dimensional nonwoven network as the substrate, the "nonwoven fabric‐polyurethane‐carbon nanotube" composite was impregnated and cured via the nonsolvent induce phase separation method, resulting in a distinctive porous dual‐network structure that ensures robust interfacial bonding between carbon nanotubes, nonwoven fabric, and polyurethane. At a carbon nanotube content of 10% (based on the mass of nonwoven fabric), CPNW exhibited an electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 28.8 dB, a thermal conductivity of 0.127 W m‐1 K‐1, and a burning time of 1 minute and 15 seconds, demonstrating outstanding electromagnetic shielding, flame retardant, and infrared stealth capabilities. Overall, this study laid a theoretical groundwork for the development of multifunctional nonwoven electromagnetic shielding materials with widespread application potential in aerospace, military, artificial intelligence, and wearable electronics. Lightweight and self-healing carbon nanotube/acrylic copolymer foams: Toward the simultaneous enhancement of electromagnetic interference shielding and thermal insulation

Abstract:Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding foams featuring light weight and ultralow thermal conductivity have received attention in a diverse range of applications, but their limited service life makes them very challenging in realistic use. As such, prolonging their service life has aroused significant scientific and technical interest. Herein, we report a facile method to prepare a carbon nanotube/acrylic copolymer (CNT/AC) foam by using isobutane as a blowing agent. This strategy is effective in constructing a 3D porous architecture composed of a segregated CNT network impregnated with an AC polymer through a hot pressing foaming process. This unique structure endows the composite with superior EMI specific shielding effectiveness (for foams with 0.62 vol% CNTs: 1243.3 dB·cm2·g−1) and an extremely low percolation threshold and thermal conductivity (0.008 W·m−1·K−1). More intriguingly, the inherent long-chain entanglements give the foam a self-healing feature. Specifically, with the incorporation of 0.80 vol% CNTs, the healing effectiveness of the EMI shielding performance is greater than 79% in the frequency range from 8.2 GHz to 12.4 GHz. Overall, the resulting CNT/AC foam possesses numerous advantages such as light weight, thermal insulation and EMI shielding self-healing performance, suggesting great potential application value in aviation areas.

Abstract:In this study, phenolic foam composites (PFC2Fs) with closed-cell structure consisting of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nano-Fe3O4 were prepared via in-situ polymerization. The introduction of MWCNTs and nano-Fe3O4 can endow the PF with electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding property. The sample with 2 wt% MWCNTs and 7 wt% Fe3O4 (PFC2F7) with thickness of 2 mm exhibited the EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) with 34 dB at 8-12 GHz. Furthermore, novel high-performance carbonized PF/2 wt% MWCNTs/Fe3O4 composite foams (C-PFC2Fs, carbon foam) with open-cell structure were fabricated by using high-temperature heat treating method. The obtained C-PFC2F7 exhibited the highest EMI SE of 62 dB at 8-12 GHz. The shielding mechanism of MWCNTs and nano-Fe3O4 was investigated. The method is fast and simple, which may promote the commercialization of composite foams in the potential applications as EMI shielding materials in the fields of spacecraft and aircraft.
