Abstract:Alum sludge from water treatment plant contained residual polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and large amount inorganic matters. Alum sludge acted as chemical conditioner and physical conditioner improved the sewage sludge dewatering. It indicated that the addition of alum sludge reduced the dosage of polyacrylamide (PAM) and decreased the moisture content of sewage sludge. The moisture content was 64% when the blend ratio was 1kg/kg (dry alum sludge/dry sewage sludge) with plate-and-frame filter press. The 3D-excitation–emission matrix (3D-EEM) was used to analyze the sludge dewatering process. A mechanism hypothesis of adding alum sludge in sewage sludge for improving the sludge dewatering was proposed. Alum sludge implements the charge neutralization and adsorption bridging effect, provides friction and squeeze for crushing sludge particles even cell, and acts as skeleton builders in the sludge to improve the sludge dewatering.

Abstract:The impacts of coagulant on the effluent water quality and membrane fouling of a chemical enhanced membrane bioreactor (CEMBR)applied for advanced treatment of dyeing wastewater were investigated.In this study,three adding modes of 30mg/L FeCl3,the combination of 30mg/L FeCl3and 30mg/L CaCl2and 30mg/L CaCl2 were applied,and synthetic secondary effluent of dyeing wastewater composed of disperse red was used as influent of the CEMBR.The results showed that adding FeCl3and the combination of FeCl3and CaCl2could enhance the removal of color,chemical oxygen demand(COD), ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus,and alleviate the membrane fouling of CEMBR.Compared with the addition of FeCl3,adding the combination of FeCl3and CaCl2had better effect on reducing membrane fouling.It could be attributed to the facts that FeCl3could reduce the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)and increase the particle size in sludge by flocculation,and CaCl2could enhance the flocculation of FeCl3.However,only adding CaCl2deteriorated membrane fouling due to the increase of EPS and reduction of particle size in sludge.Furthermore,both FeCl3and CaCl2could increase the ratios of matters with bigger molecular weight(MW)in dissolved organic matters(DOM),and the impact of CaCl2on MW distribution was more remarkable than that of FeCl3.
Optimized coagulation pretreatment alleviates ultrafiltration membrane fouling: The role of floc properties and slow-mixing speed on mechanisms of chitosan-assisted coagulation

Abstract:To alleviate ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling, the pre-coagulation of poly-aluminum chloride (PACl) with the aid of chitosan (CTS) was conducted for synthetic humic acid-kaolin water treatment. Pre-coagulation of three molecular weights (MW) CTSs (50-190 kDa (CTSL), 190-310 kDa (CTSM) and 310-375 kDa (CTSH)) was optimized with slow-mixing speeds of 30, 60 and 90 r/min, respectively. The removal efficiency and floc properties as well as membrane fouling were analyzed, and were compared to results obtained by conventional coagulation with PACl. Results showed that variations in floc properties could be ascribed to the coagulation mechanisms of CTSL/CTSM/CTSH at different slow-mixing speeds, resulting in reduced UF membrane fouling. Specifically, at the low speed of 30 r/min, all three CTS types produced flocs with similar properties, while CTSL resulted in the lowest removal efficiency and aggravated irreversible fouling. At the appropriate speed of 60 r/min, CTSM generated the most compact flocs with the combined effects of bridging and path mechanisms. The compact cake layer formed could alleviate irreversible fouling, which was beneficial for prolonging the operation of the UF membrane. At the high speed of 90 r/min, CTSH formed fragile flocs and aggravated irreversible membrane fouling. We considered membrane fouling to be affected by floc properties and the resultant removal efficiency, which was governed by the MW of the CTS used and the slow-mixing speed applied as well.
New insights into membrane fouling in coagulation-ultrafiltration by cake characteristics analysis: A case study with PACl-Al13 and PACl

Abstract:Membrane fouling is a bottleneck issue that hindered the further application of ultrafiltration technology. To alleviate membrane fouling, coagulation-ultrafiltration (C-UF) process using polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and PACl-Al13 with high proportion of Al13O4(OH)247+ as coagulants, respectively, were investigated at various pH conditions. Results indicated that an increase in solution pH contributed to larger floc size and looser floc structure for both PACl and PACl-Al13. It was conducive to the formation of more porous cake, as evidenced by mean pore area and pore area distribution of cake, leading to lower reversible fouling. Furthermore, humic acid (HA) removal presented a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of pH. The optimal HA removal was achieved at pH 6 regardless of coagulant type, suggesting that the slightest irreversible fouling should be occurred at this point. Interestingly, the irreversible fouling with PACl coagulant achieved a minimum value at pH 9, while the minimal irreversible fouling with PACl-Al13 was observed at pH 6. We speculated that the cake formed by PACl could further intercept HA prior to UF process at alkaline pH. Furthermore, compared with PACl, PACl-Al13 had a stronger charge neutralization ability, thus contributing to more compact floc structure and higher HA removal at various pH conditions. By UF fractionation measurement, higher HA removal for PACl-Al13 was due to higher removal of HA with molecular weight less than 50 kDa.

Abstract:In situ formed inorganic-organic polymer composite coagulant (IPCC) is being increasingly applied in modern drinking water purification, although the impact of cationic polymers on the ultrafiltration (UF) process is controversial. This study evaluates the impact of preformed IPCC in coagulation-ultrafiltration treatment of humic acid (HA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rich water by using a cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (pDADMAC) of various molecular weight (MW) range. The effect of feed water components, and composition (2%, 5%, 10%) of polymers (large, L-pDADMAC and small, S-pDADMAC) on UF permeate water quality and membrane fouling were systematically investigated. Results show that IPCC effectively mitigated membrane fouling and improved permeate quality depending on polymer composition. Consistent with AFM and SEM fouling analysis, the membrane contact angle (fouling) under all pretreated BSA feed filtration was higher (82.0°–90.3°) than HA. It was very low (49.1°) particularly under 10% L-pDADMAC pretreated HA media than that of 10% S-pDADMAC (51.9°), but interestingly, the permeate flux in S-pDADMAC was high owing to its cake layer permeability. Consequently, BSA demonstrated more permeate flux decline (0.32–0.54) than HA (0.53–0.9), but highest DOC removal (~90%) was achieved, attributed to the propensity of the cake layer for BSA, thereafter aggravating fouling.

Abstract:Removals of extracellular organic matter (EOM) derived from cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa and humic acid (HA) in single-component and bi-component systems and the interactions during the coagulation-ultrafiltration (C–UF) process were investigated in this study. In a single-component system, only 23% EOM could be removed by alum at dose as high as 6 mg/L, which induced serious membrane fouling in the following UF process. Interestingly, higher EOM removal efficiency was achieved (increase by about 20%) with the existence of HA and EOM-HA achieved less decline of permeate flux compared with individual EOM C–UF process. Zeta potential and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated that the interactions of HA and EOM can strengthen charge neutralization and reduce CH2 chemical bonds, which had a positive effect on the coagulation process. In addition, EOM-HA floc had a more open and looser structure than EOM floc, which was more favorable in the UF process. The extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory indicated that the acid–base interaction energy was mainly reduced, thereby alleviating membrane fouling. The study showed this beneficial interaction between the HA and EOM would enhance the EOM removal efficacy by coagulation and release the membrane fouling caused by EOM.

Abstract:High coagulants dosage, Al or Fe residual, unstable flocs, and extracellular organic materials (EOM) released from cells cannot be avoided by using traditional Al or Fe based coagulants in algae removal. Thus, a novel covalently bonded coagulant poly aluminum ferrous chloride/cationic polyacrylamide (CAFM) was developed. The algae and EOM removal performance and mechanisms were investigated in current research. Al and Fe residual, cell integrity, and compactness of flocs were analyzed after coagulation. Furthermore, the disinfection by-products formation potential (DBPFP) and economics was also figured out to confirm the advantage of using CAFM. Results showed that 95.01% of turbidity and 99.3% of OD 686 were effectively removed by using CAFM at 6 mg/L. Moreover, lower breakage probability of algae cells and denser flocs were realized by using CAFM compared to common used Al or Fe coagulants. In addition, lower Al and Fe residual and lower DBPFP were confimed in CAFM coagulation. DFT (Density functional theory) and ESP (Electrostatic Potential) results showed CAFM could combine bEOM (bonded extracellular organic matter) and dEOM (dissolved extracellular organic matter) through H-bond from Al atom in the covalent bond. Due to the introduction of various functional groups of different coagulants, charge neutralization and adsorption ability contributed to treating algae-containing water.

Abstract:A hybrid process of enhanced coagulation at a high dosage of polyaluminum chloride and flat-sheet cross-flow ultrafiltration was used for the advanced treatment of the effluent from a biological treatment process of deinking wastewater in a paper mill. The experimental results obtained by a small-scale continuous laboratory experimental device showed that the absorption resistance was significantly lower than the membrane intrinsic resistance, the concentration polarization resistance, the pore blocking resistance, and the cake layer resistance and so it can be ignored. With increasing polyaluminum chloride dosage from 0 to 2,000 mgL-1, the total membrane filtration resistance decreased and the membrane flux increased, but the concentration polarization resistance increased. With the increase in cross flow velocity, the total membrane filtration resistance, the pore blocking resistance, the layer resistance, and the concentration polarization resistance all decreased, and consequently, the membrane flux increased. With regard to the concentration polarization resistance, the cross flow velocity had a more significant effect than the trans-membrane pressure. But the trans-membrane pressure had a more significant effect on the layer resistance, the pore blocking resistance, and the total membrane filtration resistance than the cross flow velocity. The filtration resistance at the polyaluminium chloride dosage of <1,000 mgL-1 could be ranked as follows: the membrane intrinsic resistance > the pore blocking resistance > the layer resistance > the concentration polarization resistance> the absorption resistance. But it was the membrane intrinsic resistance > the concentration polarization resistance > the pore blocking resistance > the layer resistance > the absorption resistance at the dosage of ≥1,000 mgL-1. The results are helpful for the membrane fouling control and can promote the application of flat-sheet cross-flow membrane process, resultantly improving the reclaim and reuse of deinking wastewater, and reducing the emission of contaminants in deinking wastewater.

Abstract:Al 13 and Al 30 are the dominant aluminum (Al) species in polyaluminium chloride commonly used for sludge dewatering. However, the presence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the waste activated sludge hinders the coagulation effectiveness of Al-based coagulants. This study focused on the effects and mechanisms of Al 13 and Al 30 on treating sludge EPS. From a bulk perspective, the dosing of two coagulants significantly reduced the dissolved organic carbon and various organic compounds, reflecting their efficacy in removing organic substances in EPS. Further molecular characterization was revealed by FT-ICR MS. Al 13 was more effective in removing lipids, lignins, and sulfur-containing compounds compared to Al 30 . Al 13 also demonstrated a pronounced removal in components enriched in oxygen atoms (10–20) and KMD(COO) (0.5–0.7), suggesting its ability to remove molecules across a broader range of unsaturation. After coagulation with Al 13 , the areas corresponding to Al2p 1/2 and Al2p 2/3 in the Al2p spectra were more prominent compared to those in the Al 30 -coagulated EPS. Therefore, Al 13 can both remove complex and low molecule weight compounds through abound forms of adsorption sites, making it more efficient in releasing bound water compared to Al 30 .

Abstract:The pH conditions affected the binding sites and complexation ability of Al species and humic acid (HA), resulting in the difference of coagulation and membrane fouling mechanism. It is important to explore the dynamic process of coagulation for the mechanisms of Al species and HA. In this study, three Al species (Al a /Al b /Al c ) were used in coagulation process to compare the pollution degree of ultrafiltration (UF). Then, the removal efficiency of Al a for DOC was better than that of Al b and Al c , that is, the removal performance of suspended and dissolved organic matter was better for Al a . Through the analysis of coagulation dynamic process and membrane resistances, the flocs formed were smaller size and grow slowly to the equilibrium stage at pH 4, which was easy to cause membrane fouling by concentration polarization. With the pH increasing to a neutral condition, the flocs had a large size and loose structure, and then the porous cake layer was easy to be removed by physical cleaning, leading to the membrane fouling mainly due to pore plugging. Under alkaline conditions, flocs with small size and dense structure were mainly formed by sweeping, which resulted in the cake layer as the main cause of membrane fouling. This study is helpful to optimize the process of HA removal by coagulation-UF, and provides technical support for the coagulation and membrane mechanism of Al species and HA under different pH conditions.

Abstract:Ultrafiltration (UF) is one of the most promising technologies for surface water treatment, but severe membrane fouling is a significant obstacle for its widespread application. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) was used as a coagulant aid of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) in a pre-coagulation process prior to UF to mitigate UF membrane fouling. The influence of SA addition on water treatment efficiency, flocs characteristics and membrane fouling were examined. Results showed that SA dosed after PAC improved coagulation and UF efficiency due to its bridge role and gel network formation. UV254 and DOC removal from UF effluent were over 97% and 70%, respectively, when SA dosage ≥0.3 mg/L. In addition, UF membrane normalized flux was improved from 0.19 to 0.47. The membrane fouling alleviating mechanism of SA application was the formation of a porous cake layer by flocs with looser structures. In addition, these flocs were much larger than membrane pores (flocs sizes >450 μm), which also alleviate pore blocking degree of UF membrane.

Abstract:Oily wastewater treatment is necessary to reduce environmental pollution. Herein, a coagulation-ultrafiltration integrated process was used to remove emulsified oil. AlCl3, FeCl3, polyaluminum chloride (PAC), polyferric chloride (PFC), and polydimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDMDAAC) were used in coagulation process. It was found that PAC was more effective than AlCl3 and Fe based coagulants in treating oil/water emulsions. Flocs formed in PAC+PDMDAAC, PDMDAAC+PAC, and PAC-PDMDAAC coagulation systems had different size, resistance, structure, and recovery ability, which was due to the changes in the dominant coagulation mechanism. The flocs formed by PAC-PDMDAAC composite coagulant were large and loose, indicating that bridging action and entrapment dominated the removal of oil droplets. PAC-PDMDAAC was efficient in reducing irreversible membrane fouling, while the PAC+PDMDAAC dual coagulation system performed well in controlling reversible fouling. The PDMDAAC+PAC system had a large adsorption resistance and a small cake layer resistance. The PAC-PDMDAAC system had a large polarization resistance. The different membrane resistance distribution was closely related to the discrepancy in coagulation behaviors. Therefore, the enhancement in coagulation performance is the key factor to alleviate membrane fouling. This study will provide theoretical guidance for the treatment of actual oily wastewater.
Improvement of Coagulation and Membrane Filtration Performance in Hybrid Coagulation-UF-RO System for Chemical Mechanical Polishing Wastewater Treatment: Effect of Coagulants

Abstract:Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes have been widely applied in the advanced treatment of chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) wastewater. However, membrane fouling persists in practical treatment processes. Herein, a hybrid coagulation-ultrafiltration (UF)-RO (CUR) system was used to control the fouling of the RO membrane, and a novel composite coagulant was developed to enhance the coagulation efficacy for CMP wastewater. Compared to traditional processes, the improved Coagulation-UF process exhibited a remarkable capacity, removing 98.62% of total silica and achieving complete turbidity removal in CMP wastewater. Furthermore, the aluminum residual was reduced by 76.47%, and the normalized flux of the RO membrane increased from 0.87 to 0.95. Moreover, the new coagulant achieved remarkable coagulation effectiveness, with silica and turbidity removal rates reaching 97.29% and 99.87%, respectively, while reducing residual aluminum to 15.50%. Notably, dissolved silica in CMP wastewater emerged as the primary contaminant on the surface of the RO membrane. The net sweep was the primary coagulation mechanism of the new coagulant, proving good performance in reducing the burden on both UF and RO membranes. These results exhibit significant implications for designing efficient pretreatment schemes for CMP wastewater and optimizing the longevity of RO membranes in semiconductor plants.

Abstract:Pre-coagulation could mitigate the membrane fouling, and thus we used different Al coagulants as a pre-treatment for ultrafiltration to explore their effects on the morphology of the membrane cake layer and fouling. Parallel bench-scale tests, using three different species of Al (AlCl3, PACl15, and PACl25), with and without humic acid, were operated continuously for a long period to investigate the effects of floc aging (~13 days). Specifically, the presence of humic acid affects the cake layer by influencing the rate and extent of floc crystallization, as greater crystallization leads to greater fouling (bio-fouling was excluded in this study). The fouling rate (indicated by the trans-membrane pressure at constant flux) varied with Al species and was found to increase as follows: PACl15 < PACl25 < AlCl3. The presence of humic acid also intensify membrane flouling. The results showed that three species of Al induced different sizes of primary nanoparticles and fractal dimensions of flocs, and therefore produced cake layers with different thickness/structure. Analysis of flocs with different ages indicated a crystallization process in the cake layer. Crystallization exacerbate membrane fouling by decreasing the porosity of the cake layer, and the situation became severe in the presence of humic acid.

Abstract:Membrane fouling has become the one of main obstacles for the widespread application of membrane technology in water treatment processes. Coagulation as pretreatment is proven to be effective for the alleviation of membrane fouling. In this study, the influence of humic acid (HA)/sodium alginate (SA) fractions in the structure and resistance of cake layer on the membrane surface was investigated. The presence of SA at an appropriate fraction could facilitate the formation of large and loosely branched flocs and thereby form a more permeable cake layer on the membrane surface due to good bridging and charge neutralization abilities of SA molecules. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed for monitoring the dynamic formation process of cake layer under different HA/SA fractions. The cake layer with a higher thickness was observed to be rapidly formed on the membrane surface at the presence of SA in water. According to the theoretical analysis, the membrane fouling in coagulation-ultrafiltration (UF) combined system demonstrated to be highly dependent on the size and intra-porosity of flocs. The fractal dimension of flocs might have an impact on the resistance of cake layer through affecting the porosity of aggregated flocs. The SA molecules could be used as the coagulant aid for effective alleviation of membrane fouling and the improvement of filtration performance in a coagulation-UF combined system.

Abstract:Aluminum (Al) as the third most element in the crust, with its exposure to increasing acid precipitation, has posed a risk in surface water contamination. In this work, a pilot-scale micro-flocculation/gravity-driven membrane (C-GDM) ultrafiltration process was performed without backwashing, flushing, or chemical cleaning of the membrane, to investigate the removal of aluminum species from feed water artificially polluted with Al. Two types of Fe-based coagulants were compared: FeCl3 and polyferric sulfate (PFS). The results revealed that the water flux stabilized during 60-day operation at 5.3 Lm−2h−1 with a low pressure of 70 mbar. Compared with FeCl3, the C-GDM ultrafiltration combined with PFS performed better for removal of total Al, reaching 75.0% removal. The average Al concentration in the produced effluent was less than 0.1 mgL−1, which is lower than world health organization (WHO) standard for drinking water quality (0.2 mgL−1). The average removal efficiencies of particulate Al and dissolved inorganically bound Al were the best at 94.9% and 92.6% respectively, while that of polymeric colloidal, strongly bound Al was the worst, being removed at only 32.9%. Additionally, the contribution of Al-species removal by the individual coagulation step was determined, and this was compared to stand-alone ultrafiltration and to the combined coagulation/ultrafiltration process. The findings of this work led to recommendations for practical application that C-GDM ultrafiltration process is a promising technology for Al removal, which can assist in the development of strategies to solve the problem of Al pollution for decentralized water supplies.

Abstract:One of the critical issues for the widely application of ultrafiltration (UF) in water treatment is membrane fouling owning to the dissolved organic matter. The aim of the present study is to explore the effect of various particle sizes caused by low dosages of coagulant with dissolved organic matter on the UF membrane performance. Aluminum chloride was added to the synthetic water with the hydrophobic humic acid (HA), the hydrophilic bovine serum albumin (BSA) – a protein- and their 1:1 (mass ratio) mixture. The results showed that there was a critical dose of Al that could cause dramatic flux reduction by blocking the membrane pores after coagulating with HA/BSA. For HA or BSA, the critical dose of Al was relatively lower at pH 6.0 than that at pH 8.0. After coagulation, the flux decline caused by HA was slightly varied as a function of pH while that caused by BSA was greatly affected by pH. The flux decline caused by the 1:1 (mass ratio) HA/BSA mixture after coagulation was similar to that caused by HA after coagulation because BSA could be encapsulated by HA. In addition, the peak value of the molecular weight (MW) distribution of HA coagulated with Al was changed more drastically compared to that of BSA after filtration.

Abstract:Pre-coagulation by alum before ultrafiltration without (CUF) and with (CAUF) powdered activated carbon (PAC) addition was investigated to explore the influence of PAC on membrane fouling. It was found that the continuous addition of a low dosage of PAC reduced membrane fouling for operational run periods <20 days, both for reversible and for irreversible components of fouling. The presence of PAC increased the removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM), particularly proteinaceous substances, and some fractions of humic-type substances. For a longer operation time (>20 days) an increase in mainly reversible fouling was evident and was attributed to microorganism growth in the cake layer, as indicated by the enhanced concentrations of extracellular polymeric substances, such as polysaccharides and proteins. A process of crystallization of the coagulant floc in the cake layer with increasing operation time was believed to cause desorption of DOM from primary coagulation particles and a decrease in their size, and consequently a higher density of cake layer. PAC absorption of desorbed DOM within the cake layer, and residual DOM after coagulation, reduced DOM reaching the membrane surface and the extent of subsequent internal membrane fouling.

Abstract:The coagulation behavior of polyaluminum chloride (PACl) with various basicities (B=OH/Al values) was investigated under different alkalinities. It is aimed to get better insights into the coagulation mechanisms involving interactions between hydrolyzed Al(III) products and particles. Jar tests were used to evaluate the coagulation efficiencies, including zeta potentials, residual turbidities (RT) and pH values. An optical monitoring technique of photometric dispersion analyzer (PDA) was utilized to observe the coagulation dynamics. The experimental results show that the traditional coagulant such as alum evolves a rapid hydrolysis after dosing and the in situ formed hydrolysis products can destabilize the kaolin particles by precipitation charge neutralization (PCN). The preformed polymeric species in PACls exhibit a relatively high stability after dosing and can form “electrostatic patches” on clay particle surfaces. These patches play a crucial role in “electrostatic patch coagulation” (EPC). Increasing alkalinity extends both PCN and EPC zones. Under the low alkalinity, EPC with high Alb contained in PACls works better than PCN coagulation; increased alkalinity improves the efficiency of traditional coagulant due to sweep flocculation. Under the higher alkalinity, more coagulant is required to achieve complete charge neutralization. The stoichiometric relationships between the dosage and alkalinity are different depending on the B values of PACls.
