Abstract:Improper disposal of waste steel and waste ferrites in landfills will pollute ecosystems. Meanwhile, the addition of commercial metals in conventional inductive asphalt mixture (C-IAM) can heal pavement crack via induction heating. However, the high cost of commercial metals limits the wide use of C-IAM. To promote an environmentally friendly and low-cost inductive asphalt solution, as well as improving the healing efficiency, a new inductive asphalt mixture (N-IAM) comprising waste steel shavings and waste ferrites was creatively designed to enhance induction heating rate (IHR). Under the different heating power (P), frequency (f) and waste steel shavings content (S), IHR and energy conversion improvement rate (ECIR) were used to evaluate the heating performance of N-IAM. Then, the prediction models of heating performance were established and the verified experiments were conducted. Results revealed that the IHR of N-IAM is greater than C-IAM, and IHR increases with the increases of S, P and f. The ECIR of N-IAM increases with the increase of S and P, while the ECIR decreases with the rise in f. The optimum experimental scheme (S: 5.6%, P: 6 kW, f: 40 kHz) was recommended based on the prediction model, which was verified by experiments. It was also proved that N-IAM could improve the healing effect of the heat transfer area. Finally, compared with C-IAM, the electric fees saved and CO2 emission reduced by N-IAM in unit pavement within 1 h is 1.73 × 105 dollars and 5 × 105 kg respectively.
