Abstract:We show that jet emission from a Bose condensate with periodically driven interactions, also known as "Bose fireworks", contains essential information on the condensate wave function, which is difficult to obtain using standard detection methods. We illustrate the underlying physics with two examples. When condensates acquire phase patterns from external potentials or from vortices, the jets display novel substructure, such as oscillations or spirals, in their correlations. Through a comparison of theory, numerical simulations, and experiments, we show how one can quantitatively extract the phase and the helicity of a condensate from the emission pattern. Our work, demonstrating the strong link between jet emission and the underlying quantum system, bears on the recent emphasis on jet substructure in particle physics.
Many-body Chiral Edge Currents and Sliding Phases of Atomic Spinwaves in Momentum-Space Lattice

Abstract:Collective excitations of long-lived atomic hyperfine states can be synthesized into a Bose-Hubbard model in momentum space, where a spatially long-range interaction is introduced by laser-dressing the hyperfine state to Rydberg states. We explore stationary and dynamical properties of the momentum-space lattice in an artificial magnetic field. The many-body ground states support both chiral and anti-chiral edge currents in momentum space. Their stability against strong interactions is verified by a dynamical mean-field simulation. We show that the interplay of the interaction and chirality leads to correlated chiral dynamics, where an interaction-induced excitation blockade in momentum space suppresses the edge currents. When incorporating an effective decay to the lattice, we find that excitation transportation, whose dynamics is governed by a dissipative Bose-Hubard model, can be prohibited by a strong local dissipation, as a result of the quantum Zeno effect. Our study paves the route to quantum simulate topological phases and exotic dynamics with collective states of interacting atoms in momentum-space lattice.

Abstract:Scattering is an elementary probe for matter and its interactions in all areas of physics. Ultracold atomic gases provide a powerful platform in which control over pair-wise interactions empowers us to investigate scattering in quantum many-body systems. Past experiments on colliding Bose-Einstein condensates have revealed many important features, including matter-wave interference, halos of scattered atoms, four-wave mixing, and correlations between counter-propagating pairs. However, a regime with strong stimulation of spontaneous collisions analogous to superradiance has proven elusive. Here we access that regime, finding that runaway stimulated collisions in condensates with modulated interaction strength cause the emission of matter-wave jets which resemble fireworks. Jets appear only above a threshold modulation amplitude and their correlations are invariant even as the ejected atom number grows exponentially. Hence, we show that the structures and occupations of the jets stem from the quantum fluctuations of the condensate. Our findings demonstrate the conditions for runaway stimulated collisions and reveal the quantum nature of the matter-wave emission.

Abstract:Emission of matter-wave jets has been recently observed in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined by a cylindrical box potential, induced by a periodically modulated interparticle interaction [L.W. Clark et al., Nature (London) 551, 356 (2017)]. In this paper we apply the time-dependent Bogoliubov theory to study the quantum dynamics and the correlation effects observed in this highly nonequilibrium phenomenon. Without any fitting parameter, our theoretical calculations on the number of ejected atoms and the angular density correlations are in excellent quantitative agreement with the experimental measurements. The exponential growth in time of the ejected atoms can be understood in terms of a dynamical instability associated with the modulation of the interaction. We interpret the angular density correlation of the jets as the Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect between the excited quasiparticles with different angular momenta, and our theory explains the puzzling observation of the asymmetric density correlations between the jets with the same and opposite momenta. Our theory can also identify the main factors that control the height and width of the peaks in the density correlation function, which can be directly verified in future experiments.

Abstract:Submitted for the DAMOP19 Meeting of The American Physical Society Spiral Bose Fireworks: parametric amplification of vortex states HAN FU, JOOHEON YOO, LEI FENG, CHENG CHIN, KATHRYN LEVIN, University of Chicago — Periodic modulation of the two-body interaction in a Bose condensate has led to the interesting observation of “Bose fireworks” [Nature 551, 356 (2017)]; these were later shown to be well captured by our time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii simulations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 243001 (2018)]. The goal of these experiments is to unravel the structure of an unknown condensate through parametric amplification. To fulfill this, we discuss simulated emission patterns of complex initial states and find intriguing jet trajectories. Spiral jets are seen when vortices are imprinted into the initial condensate. This story, interestingly, can serve as a quantum version of the water beam emission by a sprinkler. We show how one can extract from the spiral pattern information such as the vortex winding number and condensate size. Using this “phase-tomography” philosophy, we also study other cases such as divided condensates so that one half is phase-shifted relative to the other. We present a general analytical formalism to describe this amplification process, which in some sense is reminiscent of established procedures in particle physics. Abstract:Emission of matter-wave jets from a parametrically driven condensate has attracted significant experimental and theoretical attention due to the appealing visual effects and potential metrological applications. In this work, we investigate the collective particle emission from a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a one-dimensional lattice with periodically modulated interparticle interactions. We give the regimes for discrete modes, and find that the emission can be distinctly suppressed. The configuration induces a broad band, but few particles are ejected due to the interference of the matter waves. We further qualitatively model the emission process, and demonstrate the short-time behaviors. This engineering provides a way for manipulating the propagation of particles and the corresponding dynamics of condensates in lattices, and may find use in the dynamical excitation control of other nonequilibrium problems with time-periodic driving.

Abstract:We report on the observation of spontaneously drifting coupled spin and quadrupolar density waves in the ground state of laser driven Rubidium atoms. These laser-cooled atomic ensembles exhibit spontaneous magnetism via light mediated interactions when submitted to optical feedback by a retroreflecting mirror. Drift direction and chirality of the waves arise from spontaneous symmetry breaking. Abstract:The phenomenon of random intensity patterns, for waves propagating in the presence of disorder, is well known in optics and in mesoscopic physics. We study this phenomenon for cold atomic gases expanding, by a diffusion process, in a weak random potential. We show that the density-density correlation function of the expanding gas is strongly affected by disorder and we estimate the typical size of a speckle spot, i.e., a region of enhanced or depleted density. Both a Fermi gas and a Bose-Einstein condensate (in a mean field approach) are considered.

Abstract:We have performed a principle-proof experiment of a magneto-optical diffraction (MOD) technique that requires no energy level splitting by a homogeneous magnetic field and a circularly polarized optical lattice, avoiding system errors in an interferometer based on the MOD. The principle for this MOD is that asynchronized switching of the quadrupole trap and the Ioffe trap in a quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap can generate a residual magnetic force to drive a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to move. We have observed asymmetric atomic diffraction resulting from the asymmetric distribution of the Bloch eigenstates involved in the diffraction process when the condensate is driven by such a force, and matter-wave self-imaging due to coherent population oscillation of the dominantly occupied Bloch eigenstates. We have classified the mechanisms that lead to symmetric or asymmetric diffraction and found that our experiment presents a magnetic alternative to a moving optical lattice, with a great potential to achieve a very large momentum transfer (> 110 (h) over bark) to a BEC using well-developed magnetic trapping techniques.

Abstract:In experiments involving Bose condensed atoms trapped in magnetic bottles, plugging the hole in the bottle potential with a LASER beam produces a new potential with two minima, and thus a condensate order parameter (i.e. wave function) with two maxima. When the trapping potential is removed and the condensate explodes away from the trap, the two wave function maxima act as two coherent sources which exhibit amplitude interference. A simplified theoretical treatment of this experimental effect is provided by considering momentum distributions.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the four-wave mixing of optical and matter waves resulting from the scattering of a short light pulse off an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, as recently demonstrated by D. Schneble et al. [Science 300, 475 (2003)]]. We show that atomic "pair production" from the condensate results in the generation of both forward- and backward-propagating matter waves. These waves are characterized by different phase-matching conditions, resulting in different angular distributions and temporal evolutions.

Abstract:Correlations in interacting many-body systems are key to the study of quantum matter. The complexity of the correlations typically grows quickly as the system evolves and thus presents a challenge for experimental characterization and intuitive understanding. In a strongly driven Bose-Einstein condensate, we observe the high-harmonic generation of matter-wave jets with complex correlations as a result of bosonic stimulation. Based on a pattern recognition scheme, we identify a pattern of correlations that reveals the underlying secondary scattering processes and higher-order correlations. We show that pattern recognition offers a versatile strategy to visualize and analyze the quantum dynamics of a many-body system.

Abstract:The spontaneously broken of translational symmetry is usually due to the competition between local interactions and long-range interactions. However, in this paper, we show how a crystalline order can be generated by the competition between local interaction and long-range correlation by frustration. Here we propose a positive hopping Bose Hubbard model on triangle lattices with a pair creation term which comes from frustrated linked cavity arrays with degenerate quantum gases in them. We find by increasing the strength of pair creation term against local interaction strength, two kinds of density wave ordered superradiant photonic fluid phase can be realized and a first order transition between two different density wave ordered states is found. This proposal shows us a new way to produce coherent "solid" phase without the help of long range interactions.
Spin and Density Modes in a Binary Fluid of Light

Abstract:We present the experimental observation of spin and density modes in a binary mixture of superfluids of light. A miscible Bose-Bose mixture with repulsive interactions is obtained by propagating, in the paraxial limit, the two circular polarization components of a laser through a non-linear hot atomic vapor. Controlling the intensity and phase for both polarizations allows us to selectively excite the fundamental modes of the mixture. Using a Bragg-like spectroscopy technique, we measure the dispersion relation and identify two distinct branches with different speeds of sound corresponding to the spin and density modes. At large photon density, we observe a crossing of these branches, which is due to an effective photon-photon interaction beyond the two-body regime and related to the saturation of the medium nonlinearity. This novel degree of freedom allows for precise control over the ratio of spin and density sound velocities and provide new insights into the control of binary mixtures collective dynamics.

Coherent Spinor Dynamics in a Spin-1 Bose Condensate

Abstract:Collisions in a thermal gas are perceived as random or incoherent as a consequence of the large numbers of initial and final quantum states accessible to the system. In a quantum gas, for example, a Bose–Einstein condensate or a degenerate Fermi gas, the phase space accessible to low-energy collisions is so restricted that collisions become coherent and reversible. Here, we report the observation of coherent spin-changing collisions in a gas of spin-1 bosons. Starting with condensates occupying two spin states, a condensate in the third spin state is coherently and reversibly created by atomic collisions. The observed dynamics are analogous to Josephson oscillations in weakly connected superconductors and represent a type of matter–wave four-wave mixing. The spin-dependent scattering length is determined from these oscillations to be −1.45(32) bohr. Finally, we demonstrate coherent control of the evolution of the system by applying differential phase shifts to the spin states using magnetic fields.

Abstract:The superradiant Rayleigh scattering using a pump laser incident along the short axis of a Bose-Einstein condensate with a density distortion is studied, where the distortion is formed by shocking the condensate utilizing the residual magnetic force after the switching-off of the trapping potential. We find that very small variation of the atomic density distribution would induce remarkable asymmetrically populated scattering modes by the matter-wave superradiance with long time pulse. The optical field in the diluter region of the atomic cloud is more greatly amplified, which is not an ordinary mode amplification with the previous cognition. Our numerical simulations with the density envelop distortion are consistent with the experimental results. This supplies a useful method to reflect the geometric symmetries of the atomic density profile by the superradiance scattering.
Incommensurable matter-wave jets in quasi-1D geometry

Abstract:Matter-wave jets are ejected from a Bose-Einstein condensate subjected to a modulation of the interaction strength. For sufficiently strong modulation additional higher harmonic matter-wave jets emerge. Here we report the first experimental observation of incommensurable "golden" $\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$ matter-wave jets in a Bose-Einstein condensate exposed to a single frequency interaction modulation. We study the formation of higher-order jets and the corresponding incommensurable density waves in quasi-one-dimensional geometry with numerical one dimensional (1D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation simulation. We explore the process of jet formation experimentally and theoretically for a wide range of modulation amplitudes and frequencies and establish a phase diagram delineating different regimes of jet formation.

Abstract:The radiation of electromagnetic and mechanical waves depends not only on the intrinsic properties of the emitter but also on the surrounding environment. This principle has laid the foundation for the development of lasers, quantum optics, sonar, musical instruments and other fields related to wave–matter interaction. In the conventional wisdom, the environment is defined exclusively by its eigenstates, and an emitter radiates into and interacts with these eigenstates. Here we show experimentally that this scenario breaks down at a non-Hermitian degeneracy known as an exceptional point. We find a chirality-reversal phenomenon in a ring cavity where the radiation field reveals the missing dimension of the Hilbert space, known as the Jordan vector. This phenomenon demonstrates that the radiation field of an emitter can become fully decoupled from the eigenstates of its environment. The generality of this striking phenomenon in wave–matter interaction is experimentally confirmed in both electromagnetic and acoustic systems. Our finding transforms the fundamental understanding of light–matter interaction and wave–matter interaction in general, and enriches the intriguing physics of exceptional points. The modes of the radiation field generated from an emitter are usually determined by the eigenstates of the surrounding environment. However, this scenario breaks down in a non-Hermitian system, at the spectral degeneracy known as an exceptional point.
Experimental and numerical study of combustion fireball buoyant vortex rings

Abstract:The combustion mechanism for explosive combustion and the flow in the resulting "mushroom" cloud were analyzed by igniting C2H4 drops in O2. Schlieren photography and high speed videos showed that the fireball immediately forms a vortex ring. A meso-scale meteorological RAMS (regional atmospheric modeling system) model was used to simulate the hot smoke flow. The results demonstrate that the vortex rings are not dependent on either the initial smoke shape or the temperature increase. The buoyant vortex ring forms due to the fluid buoyancy, with vorticity generated in the interfacial region between the light fluid and the environment.
