Abstract:A titanium oxide layer on top of a quantum dot‐modified gold electrode improves the stability of photoelectrochemical measurements. This work exploits the possibility of using CdSe/ZnS quantum dot (QD)‐electrodes to monitor the metabolism of living cells based on photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements. To realize that, the PEC setup is improved with respect to an enhanced photocurrent signal, better stability, and an increased signal‐to‐noise ratio, but also for a better biocompatibility of the sensor surface on which cells have been grown. To achieve this, a QD‐TiO2 heterojunction is introduced with the help of atomic layer deposition (ALD). The heterojunction reduces the charge carrier recombination inside the semiconductor nanoparticles and improves the drift behavior. The PEC performance is carefully analyzed by adjusting the TiO2 thickness and combining this strategy with multilayer immobilizations of QDs. The optimal thickness of this coating is ≈5 nm; here, photocurrent generation can be enhanced significantly (e.g., for a single QD layer electrode by more than one order of magnitude at 0 V vs Ag/AgCl). The resulting optimized electrode is used for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sensing with a good sensitivity down to μmolar concentrations, reusability, stability, response rate, and repeatability. Finally, the sensing system is applied to monitor the activity of cells directly grown on top of the electrode surface.

Abstract:H2O2 as an important intermediary is becoming more widely acknowledged, and interest in its detection has increased significantly. Herein, we developed a hollow cubic CeO2/Co(3)O(4 )heterostructure and further employed as non-enzymatic H2O2 detection sensor through a series of facile synthesis strategies using cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework as a template. The synthesized CeO2/Co(3)O(4 )with huge cavity structure offers numerous electrocatalytic active sites for the target analyte, thus endowing its high sensitivity (60.5 mu A. mM(-1 )cm (-2)), excellent selectivity, broad detection range for H2O2 (10 mu M (-1) mM), and favorable working potential (-0.45 V). Not only that the CeO2/Co3O4 sensor achieved satisfactory recovery and accuracy in real lake-water samples.

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) has been intensely investigated as an important gas-sensing materials. Here the sensitive and selective H2S gas sensors based on WO3 quantum dots that were synthesized via a colloidal process using WCl6 ethanol solutions mixed with oleic acid and oleylamine were demonstrated. The solution processability of the colloidal WO3 quantum dots enabled a room-temperature sensor fabrication without high-temperature sintering. The optimal sensor response toward 50 ppm of H2S is 57 with the response time of 47 s, and the response was fully recoverable upon H2S release at 80 degrees C. The sensing mechanism was discussed by using first-principles calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Their highly sensitive and fast response at lower operating temperature, combined with the benefit of ease fabrication, make the colloidal tungsten oxide quantum dots highly attractive for the construction of low cost gas sensor with reduced power consumption. Ni/WS2/WC Composite Nanosheets as an Efficient Catalyst for Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Sensing and Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:It is highly attractive to develop a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform based on a non-noble-metal nano array architecture. In this paper, a PEC hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) biosensor based on Ni/WS2/WC heterostructures was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal synthesis method and melamine carbonization process. The morphology, structural and composition and light absorption properties of the Ni/WS2/WC catalyst were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV–visible spectrophotometer. The average size of the Ni/WS2/WC nanosheets was about 200 nm. Additionally, the electrochemical properties toward H2O2 were studied using an electrochemical workstation. Benefiting from the Ni and C atoms, the optimized Ni/WS2/WC catalyst showed superior H2O2 sensing performance and a large photocurrent response. It was found that the detection sensitivity of the Ni/WS2/WC catalyst was 25.7 μA/cm2/mM, and the detection limit was 0.3 mmol/L in the linear range of 1−10 mM. Simultaneously, the synthesized Ni/WS2/WC electrode displayed excellent electrocatalytic properties in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with a relatively small overpotential of 126 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 0.5 M H2SO4. This novel Ni/WS2/WC electrode may provide new insights into preparing other efficient hybrid photoelectrodes for PEC applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic molecule to human health, but high-performance detection of it remains a challenge. Herein, we report an ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for H2S by modifying indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes with Cd-2(+)-doped amorphous TiO2 hollow spheres, which are prepared by templating against colloidal silica particles followed by a cadmium-sodium cation exchange reaction. The amorphous TiO2 hollow spheres act as both the probing cation carrier and the photoelectric beacon. Upon exposure to sulfide ions, the photocurrent of the functionalized photoanode proportionately decreases in response to the formation of CdS nanoparticles. The decreased photocurrent could be attributed to the mismatching bandgap between the amorphous TiO2 and CdS nanoparticles: the photoexcited electrons and holes from amorphous TiO2 are transferred to the conduction band and valence band of CdS, respectively, and then recombined. The decrease in photocurrent is linear with the concentration of sulfide ions in the range from 1 to 10 000 pmol L-1 with a detection limit of 0.36 pmol L-1. Enabled by a unique sensitization mechanism, this PEC sensor features excellent performance in a wide linear range, high selectivity and sensitivity, high stability, and low fabrication cost.
Gold Nanoparticle-Attached Perovskite Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 QDs/BiOBr Heterostructures for Photoelectrochemical Biosensing

Abstract:A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform based on gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-attached perovskite Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs/BiOBr heterostructures was developed to set up a photocathodic analysis platform for sensitive detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). A series of detailed analyses demonstrated that the Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs/BiOBr heterostructures with high photoelectric activity were successfully prepared by water treatment producing BiOBr-encapsulated Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs. The decoration of AuNPs can initiate a surface plasmon resonance enhancement effect to further effectively improve the PEC performance. The resulting AuNPs/Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs/BiOBr-modified photoelectrode presents efficient photoelectrochemical performance for H2O2 sensing in a wide linear detection range from 0.002 to 200 μM with a very low detection limit down to 0.89 nM. Meanwhile, it exhibits excellent performance of good stability, favorable specificity, and acceptable reproducibility. Moreover, the promising platform is capable of monitoring H2O2 released from living tumorigenic cells, indicating its promising potential in biological applications. Abstract:Real-time selective and quantitative detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) released by living cells is essential to understand its roles in cellular physiology. However, it is still a great challenge to monitoring H2O2 due to the low concentration and various biological interferences. Herein, this work demonstrates a novel p-type semiconductor-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor to effectively trigger H2O2 reduction to dramatically exclude the interferences of other reactive species that co-exist in the biosystem. CuO, one of the few metal oxides with natural p-type conductivity from copper vacancy, is selected as the most promising photocathode candidate, which exhibits enhanced light harvesting and electron-hole separation. Upon visible-light irradiation, the CuO nanoflower PEC sensor achieved a H2O2 detection limit of 66.7 nM, which is ~23 times superior to the value obtained from the electrochemical method. The mechanism of enhanced sensing performance was meticulously investigated by UV–vis, FTIR spectroscopy, Mott-Schottky characterization and photoelectrochemical measurements. Results reveal the suitable energy level matching between the band structure of p-type CuO nanoflower and H2O2 reduction ensures effective absorption of visible light with large driving force (~0.6 V) of photogenerated electrons to reduce H2O2 to OH−. Besides, the newly-developed CuO nanoflower PEC sensor realizes real-time monitoring of H2O2 released from living Hela cells, which provides an alternative method for scatheless assay of cell released reactive molecule detection and exhibits promising prospect in clinical diagnoses.

Abstract:The development of new highly active electrocatalysts is one of the key factors to improve the performance of enzyme-free electrochemical sensors. In this paper, Co3V2O8 was proposed as a new electrocatalyst for nonenzymatic oxidation of H2O2. A facile self-templating strategy was adopted for the synthesis of Co3V2O8 nanomaterial which was further characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), fourier translation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical techniques. The results showed that porous Co3V2O8 sphere was constructed from interconnected nanoparticle with a three-dimensional porous structure. Such unique structure made the sensor based on Co3V2O8 exhibit good electrocatalytic activity toward H2O2 oxidation, and could detect H2O2 with a low detection limit of 0.34 μM, a wide linear range of 2.0 μM to 6.1 mM and a high sensitivity of 541.4 μA mM−1 cm−2. This work demonstrated an effective new sensing platform for nonenzymatic detection of H2O2.

Abstract:Herein, novel photoactive materials, MOF-derived porous hollow carbon nanobubbles@ZnCdS multi-shelled dodecahedral cages (C@ZnCdS MSDCs)， were synthesized via continuous chemical etching, sulfurization, cation-exchange and calcination strategies. Due to the synergistic effect between the porous shells and the carbon-layer coating， C@ZnCdS MSDCs displayed superior photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. The synthesized C@ZnCdS MSDCs were assembled onto TiO2 modified ITO electrodes to form a type-II heterostructures. Then, Au nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on the surface of ITO/TiO2/C@ZnCdS MSDCs. Benefiting from the unique structure and performance merits of photoactive materials, a label-free PEC sensing platform based on ITO/TiO2/C@ZnCdS MSDCs/Au was successfully constructed for CEA detection. Under optimal conditions, the PEC biosensor exhibited a wide linear range (0.00005-500 ng mL-1) and low detection limit (2.28 fg mL-1). The proposed PEC biosensor also showed good stability, specificity, reproducibility and acceptability in human serum. The prepared C@ZnCdS MSDCs would be a promising photoactive material for PEC biosensors. Most importantly, this work opens up new horizons for the application of MOFs-derived hollow carbon materials in sensing.

Abstract:This work reports the first preparation and characterization of a hybrid PbS quantum dot (QD)/nanoporous NiO film nanostructure as well as its application for novel self-powered cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. Specifically, we synthesized the thioglycolic acid-capped PbS QDs and then assembled them onto the hydrothermally fabricated three-dimensional (3D) NiO nanostructured films on the transparent indium tin oxide-coated glass substrates, followed by the subsequent conjugation with the glucose oxidase as a model biocatalyst. Favorable alignment existed between the NiO and PbS QDs, and the as-obtained p-type heterostructure was characterized by various techniques and found to have good PEC activities. In the self-powered PEC biosensing of glucose, the system exhibited high sensitivity toward the presence of dissolved oxygen in the electrolyte, and thereby, a novel PEC enzymatic sensor was developed. With a PbS QD/3D NiO nanofilm, this work manifested the great promise of a heterostructure photocathode for a self-powered PEC biosensor that to the best of our knowledge has not been reported. We believe that it could inspire more interest in the design and development of numerous other p-type heterostructures for advanced self-powered PEC biosensors.
A Wavelength-Resolved Ratiometric Photoelectrochemical Technique: Design and Sensing Applications

Abstract:In this work, a wavelength-resolved ratiometric photoelectrochemical (WR-PEC) technique was investigated and employed to construct a new type of PEC sensor with good sensitivity and anti-interference ability. The WR-PEC hybrid photoelectrodes were stepwise assembled using semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) and photoactive dyes. Under continuous irradiation, the photocurrent-wavelength (I-λ) curves reveal the dependence of the photocurrent on the wavelength. By monitoring the ratios of the two different PEC peak values, a wavelength-resolved ratiometric strategy was realized. Using CdS QDs and methylene blue (MB) as photoactive models, a dual-anodic WR-PEC sensor was established for sensitive detection of Cu2+. This ratiometric strategy was identified to be based on the quenching effect of Cu2+ towards CdS QDs and enhancement of the MB photocurrent through catalytic oxidation of leuco-MB. Under continuous illumination from 400 nm to 800 nm at a 0.1 V bias potential, a WR-PEC sensor for Cu2+ was developed with a wide linear range and a detection limit of 0.37 nM. This WR-PEC had a greatly improved anti-interference ability in a complex environment, and showed acceptable stability. Moreover, using the CdS/magnesium phthalocyanine (MgPc) and CdTe/MgPc as photoelectrodes, anodic-cathodic and dual-cathodic WR-PEC sensors were established, respectively. The WR-PEC technique could serve as a novel concept for designing ratiometric or multi-channel PEC sensors.
A novel H2O2photoelectrochemical sensor based on ternary RGO/Ag-TiO2 nanotube arrays nanocomposite

Abstract:Ternary nanocomposite photoelectrodes composed of Ag nanoparticles, reduced graphene oxide (RGO), and TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTs) were successfully designed and achieved by a combining technique of cyclic voltammetry and anodic oxidation. Herein, the obtained RGO/Ag-TNTs composites were employed for photoelectrochemical (PEC) monitoring platform of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for the first time. Compared to pure TNTs, Ag-TNTs, and RGO-TNTs, the ternary RGO/Ag-TNTs nanocomposites with appropriate loading amount of RGO and Ag show much higher PEC activity, which were contributed to the synergistic effect resulting from the effective incorporation of Ag nanoparticles and RGO onto the TNTs to accelerate the electron transfer, increase the charge carrier density and prolong the electron lifetime demonstrated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Mott-Schottky (M-S) measurements and open circuit voltage decay (OCVD) measurement. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the as-prepared PEC sensors exhibited an extremely wide dynamic range from 10−7 nM to 10 mM, and in the range of 0.1–10 mM with higher sensitivity and a detection limit of 20 μM. Moreover, the PEC sensors displayed good reproducibility, long-term stability, and selectivity toward the determination of H2O2. These excellent results make the as-developed ternary RGO/Ag-TNTs nanocomposites a promising candidate in PEC detection H2O2.

Renewable WO3/Bi2O3 heterojunction for Photoelectrochemical and Visual Dual-mode Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide

Abstract:The overexploitation and combustion of fossil fuels have caused serious hydrogen sulfide (H2S) pollution, which highlights the urgency for effective supervision. Herein, we report a renewable tungsten trioxide/bismuth oxide (WO3/Bi2O3) heterojunction for dual-mode photoelectrochemical (PEC) and visual determination of pernicious H2S. The spontaneous ion-exchange reaction induced partial transformation of Bi2O3 to Bi2S3 have made the “signal-on” PEC detection strategy available, while the obvious color difference from light cyan to khaki realizes the visual determination under high concentration. Correspondingly, the low limit of detection (LOD) of ca. 38 nM, the wide linear range for PEC (0.1–500 μM) and visual (50 μM - 5 mM) detection mode, and exclusively unique selectivity are achieved. Besides, the already-used sensor exhibits rich added value for highly efficient water splitting, and the detection process can be re-implemented multiple times by a facile regeneration treatment, paves a user-friendly approach for the controllable monitor of H2S.

Abstract:Given the pivotal role of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in numerous biological progresses, there has been a recent surge in the development of highly effective electrochemical sensors for H 2 O 2 detection. In this article, we propose an enzyme-free amperometric system for the sensitive and selective recognition of H 2 O 2 , leveraging ultrafine PtPd alloy/ionic liquid-carbon dots (IL-CDs) nanocomposites modified flexible carbon fiber. The IL-CDs were synthesized through the direct electrodeposition of ionic liquid [BMIM][PF 6 ] using Pt sheets as electrodes. Subsequently, a sequential electrodeposition of IL-CDs, H 2 PtCl 6 , and PdCl 2 onto the activated carbon fiber (ACF) yielded the PtPd/IL-CDs/ACF microelectrode. This microelectrode serves as an enzyme-free amperometric sensor for H 2 O 2 detection, exhibiting an improved response with a significantly lower detection limit of 0.29 μM and a relatively broad linear range spanning from 2 to 6561 μM. Furthermore, this enzyme-free amperometric H 2 O 2 sensor demonstrates remarkable stability over extended periods and exceptional performance in practical applications, such as the analysis of commercially available milk, human serum, human urine, and living cancer cells analysis. This study offers a fresh perspective on amperometric sensors based on metal alloys and CDs electrode, highlighting the potential of enzyme-independent detection for hydrogen peroxide in biological systems.

Abstract:Improper treatment of highly active natural or edible water will cause environmental pollution, and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a common pollutant. Wide-range concentrations and short half-lift time of H 2 O 2 in different sample conditions make it a challenge for its accurate and fast detection. We present here the use of Bi 2 WO 6 nanocrystal with rich oxygen vacancy (Bi 2 WO 6 -V) to construct a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for fast and wide-range qualification of H 2 O 2 . Under visible light irradiation, the H 2 O 2 detection limit of the Bi 2 WO 6 -V PEC sensor reaches 0.5 μM, which is 10 times that without light. The mechanism of PEC sensing performance toward H 2 O 2 was studied by UV-vis, Mott-Schottky characterization and PEC measurements, finding that the driving force of photogenerated electrons (-0.627V) caused by energy level difference between Bi 2 WO 6 -V and the reduction of H 2 O 2 ensures that the visible light can be effectively absorbed to reduce H 2 O 2 to H 2 O. The calibration curve of H 2 O 2 obtained by the proposed PEC sensor regions from 1.5 μ M to 230 mM, with high response time and good selectivity. In addition, the sensor can detect H 2 O 2 in actual samples-milk and lake water, which has broad prospects in environmental monitoring.

AgPt/MoS2 hybrid as electrochemical sensor for detecting H2O2 release from living cells

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), as a biomarker in a series of physiological processes, plays a crucial role in investigating the pathogenesis of some diseases. The highly sensitive and selective detection of H2O2 release from living cells has aroused tremendous research interests. Herein, a non-enzymatic electrochemical H2O2 biosensor was constructed based on AgPt bimetallic nanoparticles-structured MoS2 nanohybrid (AgPt/MoS2) as an electrocatalyst. The AgPt/MoS2 nanohybrid was successfully synthesized by a facile wet-chemical method. Compared with AgPt nanoparticles, the AgPt/MoS2 nanohybrid exhibited significant enhancement in catalytic performance towards H2O2. The main factor is that MoS2 nanosheets as a supporting material promote AgPt nanoparticles to expose more active sites. The electrochemical response of the AgPt/MoS2 hybrid-based biosensor to H2O2 was linear in the range of 20 μM - 4 mM, and the detection limit was calculated as 1.0 μM. To prove practicality, the biosensor was further applied to detect H2O2 release from living SMMC-7721 cells. These results indicate the potential applications of the developed biosensor in monitoring physiological processes.

Large-Scale Tunable 3D Self-Supporting WO3 Micro-Nano Architectures As Direct Photoanodes for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.

Abstract:Hydrogen production from water based on photoelectrochemical (PEC) reactions is feasible to solve the urgent energy crisis. Herein, hierarchical 3D self-supporting WO3 micro-nano architectures in situ grown on W plates are successfully fabricated via ultrafast laser processing hybrid with thermal oxidation. Owing to the large surface area and efficient interface charge transfer, the W plate with hierarchical porous WO3 nanoparticle aggregates has been directly employed as the photoanode for excellent PEC performance, which exhibits a high photocurrent density of 1.2 mA cm-2 at 1.0 V vs Ag/AgCl (1.23 V vs RHE) under AM 1.5 G illumination and reveals excellent structural stability during long-term PEC water splitting reactions. The nanoscale and microscale features can be facilely tuned by controlling the laser processing parameters and the thermal oxidation conditions to achieve improved PEC activity. The presented hybrid method is simple, cost-effective, and controllable for large-scale fabrication, which should provide a new and general route that how the properties of conventional metal oxides can be improved via hierarchical 3D micro-nano configurations.
Regulating the electronic status on open WO2.83 surfaces for ultrasensitive H2S sensors

Abstract:Engineering open nanostructures with regulable surface electron status possess great potential to increase gas-sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductor. Here, we develop a mesoporous tungsten oxide with special non-stoichiometric nature and double-activated surface electron status to realize ultralow-concentration detection of hydrogen sulfide. We found that the ordered mesoporous framework plays a crucial role in inducing the kinetic evolution to selectively form fixed non-stoichiometric meso-WO2.83 crystal, while the bulk-WO3 trends to lead the formation of bulk-WO2.9 or bulk-WO2.72 crystal. Impressively, the meso-WO2.83 crystal and co-existing oxygen defects exhibit obviously enhanced surface electron resonance and delocalization, thus leading a marked localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Further theoretical and experimental results confirm that the LSPR effect and oxygen defects endow special surface electron status to markedly improve the adsorption and electron transfer process of H2S molecules. The as-obtained meso-WO2.83 based MEMS sensors exhibit superior sensitivity, rapid response (<7 s), and ultralow detection limit of 5 ppb H2S. Our proposed strategy of open nanostructures with regulable surface electron status may create a new path to design fast and highly-effective H2S detection.

Abstract:Modulation of electrolyte to tailor the activity and selectivity for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has been long neglected. Herein, we practice to boost H2O2 accumulation on a BiVO4 photoanode via PEC water oxidation in a series of Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs) aqueous solution with aliphatic amino acids as precursors. Mott-Schottky measurement demonstrated CQDs solution can tune catalytic voltage location of BiVO4 substrate. Open circuit voltage decay (OCVD) manifested the system can achieve efficient charge separation owing to the fabricated dynamic heterojunction between CQDs particles and BiVO4 substrate. Along the energy alignment, water oxidation may occur on the more hydrophilic CQDs surface, which regulated H2O2 generation mediated by the formation of hydroxyl radicals (OH•) from water, as evidenced by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Assisted by clark electrode and linear sweep voltammetry, it evidenced CQDs can efficiently retard H2O2 decomposition. Overall, H2O2 production was performed with a rate averaging 0.33 μmol min-1 cm-2 at 1.23 V with a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 93.5%, in which O2 evolution was near-completely suppressed. By contrast, commonly used HCO3- electrolyte only afforded H2O2 evolution rate as 0.032 μmol min-1 cm-2, corresponding to FE% of 18.2%. Here, we executed PEC water oxidative H2O2 accumulation in CQDs solution directly, and the innovation can hopefully draw more attention to catalytic media for improving PEC performance.

Abstract:<p>Integrating the advantages of excellent anti-interference and high stability superior to photoanode, cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis is promising and competitive in precise monitoring targets in complex matrices. However, serious consideration of the photocathode is far behind the anodic one. Herein, we report a high quality MoS<sub>2</sub> QDs-BiOI p-n heterojunctioned material and exemplify the feasibility of constructing cathodic PEC aptasensing platform. Intense visible light-harvesting, high photoelectric conversion efficiency and magnified photocurrent is observed, which origin is detailed explored by various spectroscopic and electrochemical study. Taking the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) as a model analyte and by coupling the simplest target-induced conformational change mechanism, high selectivity and ultrasensitive self-power cathodic PEC detection is exemplified. Stable and reproducible PEC responses are achieved in a wide linear range of 10 fg/mL to 0.1 ug/mL with an ultralow detection limit (5.2 fg/mL) surpassing most sensors reported so far. Monitoring TNF-α in biological system is realized with desired accuracy and satisfactory recovery.</p>
