Abstract:3D modelling finds a wide range of applications in robot vision and reverse engineering. However due to the presence of surface scanning noise, accumulative registration errors, and improper data fusion, the reconstructed surfaces from multiple registered range images are often non-smooth and distorted with thick patches, false connections and blurred features. These shortcomings will limit the wide applications of 3D modelling using the latest laser scanning systems. In this paper, the clustering approach, surface segmentation and classification are employed to fuse registered range images to reduce the adverse effect of large accumulative registration errors and heavy scanning noise, minimize the dissimilarity of the fused surface with respect to the original overlapping surfaces, and produce smooth and detailed 3D object computer models. For initialization of the clustering approach, an automatic method is developed, shifting possible corresponding points from different viewpoints toward each other and thus, making sure that the initialization of the cluster centroids are in between the two data sets so that more efficient and effective integration of data can be obtained. Then the principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to segment these centroids into different areas for the representation of the initially fused surface and then the tensor analysis is applied to classify these areas into featured and non-featured ones. In the integration process, the K means and fuzzy c means clustering approaches from the pattern recognition and machine learning literatures are employed to integrate non-featured areas for a smooth fused surface and featured areas for keeping the geometric details. By controlling a parameter, the final integrated surface can be traded off between smoothness and geometric details. Finally the fused point set is triangulated using an improved Delaunay method, guaranteeing a watertight surface. The new method is theoretically guaranteed to converge and minimize the dissimilarity between the final fused surface and original surfaces. A comparative study based on real images shows that the proposed algorithm desirably retains geometric details, produces smooth surface and minimizes the integration error.
Improved Fast 3D Reconstruction Algorithm Based on Laser Scanning Point Cloud

Abstract:The point cloud data obtained by a 3D laser scanner is known for its high density, redundancy, and significant noise, which can result in a slow 3D reconstruction process and an imprecise reconstruction surface. To address these issues, a method for rapidly creating a 3D point cloud model based on 3D laser scanning was proposed. This approach involves removing outlier point clouds using a statistical filtering algorithm, downsampling the data using an improved octree voxel filtering algorithm, smoothing the point cloud using the moving least squares method and resampling it. Finally, the improved greedy projection triangulation algorithm is used for surface reconstruction. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper can improve the efficiency of model reconstruction, and the reconstructed model has smooth surface, accurate structure and improved precision.
MD-Surf: Multimodal Neural Surface Reconstruction from Driving Views

Abstract:In this paper, we present MD-Surf, a multimodal volumetric implicit surface reconstruction approach designed to achieve precise and efficient surface reconstruction and facilitate novel view inference to urban street scenes. Given that street scenes are primarily observed from a single driving view, we combine the advantages of RGB sequences and LiDAR scans to realize superior performance. We employ a hierarchical sparse feature Octree and a small multi-layer perception (MLP) to encode the signed distance function (SDF) and color. Further-more, we propose an efficient sampling strategy adapted to multimodal surface reconstruction, which reduces optimization time and computational resource consumption while maintaining the quality of geometry and novel view rendering. Thanks to the multimodal inputs and the efficient sampling strategy, MD-Surf shows excellent performance on real-world datasets.
DP-MVS: Detail Preserving Multi-View Surface Reconstruction of Large-Scale Scenes

Abstract:This paper presents an accurate and robust dense 3D reconstruction system for detail preserving surface modeling of large-scale scenes from multi-view images, which we named DP-MVS. Our system performs high-quality large-scale dense reconstruction, which preserves geometric details for thin structures, especially for linear objects. Our framework begins with a sparse reconstruction carried out by an incremental Structure-from-Motion. Based on the reconstructed sparse map, a novel detail preserving PatchMatch approach is applied for depth estimation of each image view. The estimated depth maps of multiple views are then fused to a dense point cloud in a memory-efficient way, followed by a detail-aware surface meshing method to extract the final surface mesh of the captured scene. Experiments on ETH3D benchmark show that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods on F1-score, with the running time more than 4 times faster. More experiments on large-scale photo collections demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework for large-scale scene reconstruction in terms of accuracy, completeness, memory saving, and time efficiency.

Abstract:This paper presents a 3D reconstruction method fusing structure from motion and laser scanning method. The precision of the 3D reconstruction is improved by combining point cloud obtained from different sensors. First, a scaled principal component analysis-iterative closest point (a scaled-PCA-ICP) algorithm is proposed to do the registration that can overcome the influence of large scale variance. Then, with the large scale factor, a recalculated registration center is proposed by region segmentation to realize the point cloud registration again. Finally, the two-view point clouds are robustly matched using the proposed optimization method to complete 3D color reconstruction of the outdoor large scenes. The proposed 3D reconstruction method is evaluated on the non-synchronous database of the real-world multi-view vision sequences obtained in an outdoor environment and laser scanner. The experiment results show improvements in both accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:Modelling and recovering nonrigid surface are interesting research problem for image analysis and computer vision, which can be applied in a variety of applications. In this report, two different approaches to nonrigid surface recovery have been proposed. One is based on the appearance models, the other employs the local features. As for the appearance-based method, a two-stage scheme method is presented for online nonrigid surface recovery toward Augmented Reality (AR) applications using Active Appearance Models (AAMs). First, 3D shape models are constructed from AAMs offline, which do not involve processing of the 3D scan data. Based on the computed 3D shape models, an efficient online algorithm is proposed to estimate both 3D pose and non-rigid shape parameters via local bundle adjustment for building up point correspondences. This approach, without manual intervention, can recover the 3D non-rigid shape effectively from either real-time video sequences or single image. The recovered 3D pose parameters can be used for AR registrations. Furthermore, the facial feature can be tracked simultaneously, which is critical for many face related applications. Promising experimental results demonstrate the proposed scheme is effective for real-time AR applications. For the feature-based approach, a progressive finite Newton optimization scheme is proposed for the nonrigid surface detection problem, which is reduced to only solving a set of linear equations. The key of this method is to formulate the nonrigid surface detection as an unconstrained quadratic optimization problem which has a closedform solution for a given set of observations. Moreover, a progressive active-set selection scheme is employed, which takes advantage of the rank information of detected correspondences. Extensive experiments have been conducted for performance evaluation on various environments, whose promising results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient and effective than the existing iterative methods.

Abstract:Multiple point cloud fusion is one of the most widely used methods for outdoor scene 3D reconstruction. However, being based on the traditional registration methods, their performance critically influences the quality of the 3D reconstruction. This paper proposes a 3D reconstruction method that fuses different sensors point cloud, which comes from laser scanning and structure from motion. First, a scale-based principal component analysis–iterative closest point (a scaled PCA–ICP) algorithm is addressed to eliminate different scales of two view points. Further, the feature points are extracted automatically for accurate registration by analyzing the persistence of feature points with discretely sampling on different sphere radii. Finally, the optimization ICP method is used to match multiple point cloud to achieve accurate reconstruction of outdoor scenes robustly. The experimental evaluation demonstrates that the proposed method is able to produce reliable registration results for the outdoor scene.
Real-Time 3D Reconstruction of Thin Surface Based on Laser Line Scanner

Abstract:The truncated signed distance field (TSDF) has been applied as a fast, accurate, and flexible geometric fusion method in 3D reconstruction of industrial products based on a hand-held laser line scanner. However, this method has some problems for the surface reconstruction of thin products. The surface mesh will collapse to the interior of the model, resulting in some topological errors, such as overlap, intersections, or gaps. Meanwhile, the existing TSDF method ensures real-time performance through significant graphics processing unit (GPU) memory usage, which limits the scale of reconstruction scene. In this work, we propose three improvements to the existing TSDF methods, including: (i) a thin surface attribution judgment method in real-time processing that solves the problem of interference between the opposite sides of the thin surface; we distinguish measurements originating from different parts of a thin surface by the angle between the surface normal and the observation line of sight; (ii) a post-processing method to automatically detect and repair the topological errors in some areas where misjudgment of thin-surface attribution may occur; (iii) a framework that integrates the central processing unit (CPU) and GPU resources to implement our 3D reconstruction approach, which ensures real-time performance and reduces GPU memory usage. The proposed results show that this method can provide more accurate 3D reconstruction of a thin surface, which is similar to the state-of-the-art laser line scanners with 0.02 mm accuracy. In terms of performance, the algorithm can guarantee a frame rate of more than 60 frames per second (FPS) with the GPU memory footprint under 500 MB. In total, the proposed method can achieve a real-time and high-precision 3D reconstruction of a thin surface.
Reconstructing Surfaces for Sparse Point Clouds with On-Surface Priors

Abstract:It is an important task to reconstruct surfaces from 3D point clouds. Current methods are able to reconstruct surfaces by learning Signed Distance Functions (SDFs) from single point clouds without ground truth signed distances or point normals. However, they require the point clouds to be dense, which dramatically limits their performance in real applications. To resolve this issue, we propose to reconstruct highly accurate surfaces from sparse point clouds with an on-surface prior. We train a neural network to learn SDFs via projecting queries onto the surface represented by the sparse point cloud. Our key idea is to infer signed distances by pushing both the query projections to be on the surface and the projection distance to be the minimum. To achieve this, we train a neural network to capture the on-surface prior to determine whether a point is on a sparse point cloud or not, and then leverage it as a differentiable function to learn SDFs from unseen sparse point cloud. Our method can learn SDFs from a single s parse point cloud without ground truth signed distances or point normals. Our numerical evaluation under widely used benchmarks demonstrates that our method achieves state-of-the-art reconstruction accuracy, especially for sparse point clouds. A Two-Phase Approach of Progressive Mesh Reconstruction from Unorganized Point Clouds

Abstract:This paper presents a practical approach for surface reconstruction from unoriented point clouds. Instead of estimating local surface orientation, we first generate a set of depth images from the input point clouds, and a coarse mesh is then generated based on them by space carving techniques. The resultant mesh is progressively refined by local mesh refinement and optimization according to surface distance measure. A manifold mesh approximating the input points within an given tolerance is finally obtained. Our approach is easy to implement, but has the ability to outputs high quality meshes in different resolutions. We show that the proposed approach is not sensitive to several types of data disfigurement and is able to reconstruct models robustly from variance input data.

Abstract:We present a system to improve the robustness of real-time 3D surface reconstruction by utilizing non-inertial localization sensor. Benefiting from such sensor, our easy-to-build system can effectively avoid tracking drift and lost comparing with conventional dense tracking and mapping systems. To best fusing the sensor, we first adopt a hand-eye calibration and performance analysis for our setup and then propose a novel optimization framework based on adaptive criterion function to improve the robustness as well as accuracy. We apply our system to several challenging reconstruction tasks, which show significant improvement in scanning robustness and reconstruction quality.

Abstract:As data acquisition technology continues to advance, the improvement and upgrade of the algorithms for surface reconstruction are required. In this paper, we utilized multiple terrestrial Light Detection And Ranging (Lidar) systems to acquire point clouds with different levels of complexity, namely dynamic and rigid targets for surface reconstruction. We propose a robust and effective method to obtain simplified and uniform resample points for surface reconstruction. The method was evaluated. A point reduction of up to 99.371% with a standard deviation of 0.2 cm was achieved. In addition, well-known surface reconstruction methods, i.e., Alpha shapes, Screened Poisson reconstruction (SPR), the Crust, and Algebraic point set surfaces (APSS Marching Cubes), were utilized for object reconstruction. We evaluated the benefits in exploiting simplified and uniform points, as well as different density points, for surface reconstruction. These reconstruction methods and their capacities in handling data imperfections were analyzed and discussed. The findings are that i) the capacity of surface reconstruction in dealing with diverse objects needs to be improved; ii) when the number of points reaches the level of millions (e.g., approximately five million points in our data), point simplification is necessary, as otherwise, the reconstruction methods might fail; iii) for some reconstruction methods, the number of input points is proportional to the number of output meshes; but a few methods are in the opposite; iv) all reconstruction methods are beneficial from the reduction of running time; and v) a balance between the geometric details and the level of smoothing is needed. Some methods produce detailed and accurate geometry, but their capacity to deal with data imperfection is poor, while some other methods exhibit the opposite characteristics.

Abstract:In order to obtain the fast three-dimensional surface reconstruction from given scattered point clouds, a novel improved point-cloud surface reconstruction algorithm for laser imaging radar is proposed so as to reconstruct the three-dimensional depth surface from the depth data and image data in this paper. Firstly, the three-dimensional space is partitioned into voxels with local distance points and finds outliers with point histogram features; then the Gaussian process (GP) regression is adopted to generate a plane similar to a Gaussian distribution; finally, the high-resolution gray data and three-dimensional interpolation points are fused by using Markov random fields to build a dense three-dimensional depth surface. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm will greatly improve the robustness and reconstruction accuracy of three-dimensional surface reconstruction algorithm and can be used to assist unmanned driving in complex urban scenes.

Abstract:Improving the rapidity of 3D reconstruction is vital for time-critical construction tasks such as progress monitoring and hazard detection, but the majority of construction studies in this area have focused on improving its quality. We applied a Direct Sparse Odometry with Loop Closure (LDSO)-based 3D reconstruction method, improving the existing algorithm and tuning its hyper-parameter settings, to achieve both near real-time operation and quality 3D point cloud simultaneously. When validated using a benchmark dataset, the proposed method showed notable improvement in 3D point cloud density, as well as loop closure robustness, compared to the original LDSO. In addition, we conducted a real field test to validate the tuned LDSO’s accuracy and speed at both object and site scales, where we demonstrated our method’s near real-time operation and capability to produce a quality 3D point cloud comparable to that of the existing method. The proposed method improves the accessibility of the 3D reconstruction technique, which in turn helps construction professionals monitor their jobsite safety and progress in a more efficient manner.
Robust and Accurate Superquadric Recovery: a Probabilistic Approach

Abstract:Interpreting objects with basic geometric primitives has long been studied in computer vision. Among geometric primitives, superquadrics are well known for their ability to represent a wide range of shapes with few parameters. However, as the first and foremost step, recovering superquadrics accurately and robustly from 3D data still remains challenging. The existing methods are subject to local optima and sensitive to noise and outliers in real-world scenarios, resulting in frequent failure in capturing geometric shapes. In this paper, we propose the first probabilistic method to recover superquadrics from point clouds. Our method builds a Gaussian-uniform mixture model (GUM) on the parametric surface of a superquadric, which explicitly models the generation of outliers and noise. The superquadric recovery is formulated as a Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) problem. We propose an algorithm, Expectation, Maximization, and Switching (EMS), to solve this problem, where: (1) outliers are predicted from the posterior perspective; (2) the superquadric parameter is optimized by the trust-region reflective algorithm; and (3) local optima are avoided by globally searching and switching among parameters encoding similar superquadrics. We show that our method can be extended to the multi-superquadrics recovery for complex objects. The proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and robustness on both synthetic and real-world datasets. Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel surface reconstruction framework from point clouds without normal. The proposed method involves three processes: partition of unit, which divide the point clouds into sub-domains using octree structure, generation of the sub-surface, which fit the sub-surface by implicit function in each sub-domain, the normal alignment, which compute normal of sub-surface and inference the global normal of surface by iteratively propagate algorithm. During the last process, sub-surfaces are blended to form entire surface reconstruction. The method is suitable to reconstruct surface with lack of information. The experimental results demonstrate that the method is effective in surface reconstruction.
Surface-Centric Modeling for High-Fidelity Generalizable Neural Surface Reconstruction

Abstract:Reconstructing the high-fidelity surface from multi-view images, especially sparse images, is a critical and practical task that has attracted widespread attention in recent years. However, existing methods are impeded by the memory constraint or the requirement of ground-truth depths and cannot recover satisfactory geometric details. To this end, we propose SuRF, a new Surface-centric framework that incorporates a new Region sparsification based on a matching Field, achieving good trade-offs between performance, efficiency and scalability. To our knowledge, this is the first unsupervised method achieving end-to-end sparsification powered by the introduced matching field, which leverages the weight distribution to efficiently locate the boundary regions containing surface. Instead of predicting an SDF value for each voxel, we present a new region sparsification approach to sparse the volume by judging whether the voxel is inside the surface region. In this way, our model can exploit higher frequency features around the surface with less memory and computational consumption. Extensive experiments on multiple benchmarks containing complex large-scale scenes show that our reconstructions exhibit high-quality details and achieve new state-of-the-art performance, i.e., 46% improvements with 80% less memory consumption. Abstract:The Structure-from-Motion (SfM) algorithm is widely used for point cloud reconstruction. However, one drawback of conventional SfM based methods is that the obtained final point sets may contain holes and noise, which could degrade the estimation of reconstructed objects especially for smooth surfaces with few features. The other drawback is the accuracy and speed of SfM based methods depend on the uncertain number of images. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a novel 3D reconstruction method for unstructured objects based on the structure from motion in combination with the structured light, in which the point sets of structured light and the point sets of structure from motion can come from different target objects. Since the two point sets coming from multiple sensors do not scale well for register, making it difficult to find corresponding points, a scaled principal component analysis algorithm is proposed for the registration to overcome the impact due to large scale variance. With a large scale factor, a recalculated registration center is proposed via feature region segmentation to achieve point cloud registration again. The two point sets are matched using the proposed optimization method to complete 3D reconstruction. Surface reconstruction is performed using the Poisson algorithm to obtain a smooth surface. The proposed method is tested on some simple structured objects and real-life data of complex unstructured objects collected using range sensors. Compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms, experimental results confirm its potential for surface reconstruction from depth data calculated from the two sets.

Abstract:The reconstruction of an object's shape or surface from a set of 3D points plays an important role in medical image analysis, e.g. in anatomy reconstruction from tomographic measurements or in the process of aligning intra-operative navigation and preoperative planning data. In such scenarios, one usually has to deal with sparse data, which significantly aggravates the problem of reconstruction. However, medical applications often provide contextual information about the 3D point data that allow to incorporate prior knowledge about the shape that is to be reconstructed. To this end, we propose the use of a statistical shape model (SSM) as a prior for surface reconstruction. The SSM is represented by a point distribution model (PDM), which is associated with a surface mesh. Using the shape distribution that is modelled by the PDM, we formulate the problem of surface reconstruction from a probabilistic perspective based on a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). In order to do so, the given points are interpreted as samples of the GMM. By using mixture components with anisotropic covariances that are "oriented" according to the surface normals at the PDM points, a surface-based fitting is accomplished. Estimating the parameters of the GMM in a maximum a posteriori manner yields the reconstruction of the surface from the given data points. We compare our method to the extensively used Iterative Closest Points method on several different anatomical datasets/SSMs (brain, femur, tibia, hip, liver) and demonstrate superior accuracy and robustness on sparse data.

Abstract:The 3D reconstruction for freehand 3D ultrasound remains a hard problem because that the recorded B-scans are not only sparse, but also non-parallel (actually they may intersect each other). Conventional volume reconstruction methods can't reconstruct sparse data efficiently while not introducing geometrical artifacts, and conventional surface reconstruction methods can't reconstruct surfaces from cross-sections that are arbitrarily oriented in 3D space. We develop a new surface reconstruction method for freehand 3D ultrasound. It is based on variational implicit function, which is presented by Greg Turk for shape transformation, so we name this method as variational implicit function (VIF) method. In VIF method, we first create boundary and normal constraints from the segmented cross-sections of all recorded B-scans, then we invoke a variational interpolation technique to get a single implicit function in 3D. Last the implicit function is evaluated to extract the zero-valued surface, which is what we expected as the reconstruction result. Two experiments are conducted to assess our VIF surface reconstruction method. Experiment results have shown that VIF method is capable of reconstructing smooth surface from sparse cross-sections which can be arbitrarily oriented in 3D space. A very small number of cross-sections can lead to a close approximation of the original data.
