Abstract:Background: The chemokine C-C motif ligand 11, also known as eotaxin-1, has been identified as a novel mediator of inflammatory bone resorption. However, little is known regarding a potential role for CCL11/Eotaxin-1 in postmenopausal osteoporosis. Objective: The scope of this study was to explore the relationship between serum CCL11/Eotaxin-1 concentrations and disease progression of postmenopausal females with osteoporosis. Methods: A total of 83 postmenopausal women diagnosed with osteoporosis were enrolled. Meanwhile, 82 postmenopausal women with normal bone mineral density (BMD) and 85 healthy controls inner child-bearing age were enrolled as control. The Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to examine the BMDs at the femoral neck, lumbar spine 1-4 and total hip of all participants. Serum CCL11/Eotaxin-1 levels were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We also included inflammation marker interleukin-6 (IL-6) as well as a serum marker of bone resorption C-telopeptide cross-linked collagen type 1 (CTX-1). The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were recorded to evaluate the clinical severity in POMP females. Results: Serum CCL11/Eotaxin-1 levels were significantly elevated in postmenopausal osteoporotic patients PMOP patients compared with PMNOP and healthy controls. We observed a significant negative correlation of serum CCL11/Eotaxin-1 levels with lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip BMD. Furthermore, serum CCL11/ Eotaxin-1 concentrations were also positively related to the VAS and ODI scores. Last, serum CCL11/ Eotaxin-1 concentrations were positively associated with IL-6 and CTX-1 levels. These correlations remain significant after adjusting for age and BMI. Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that CCL11/Eotaxin-1 could serve as an independent marker. Conclusions: Serum CCL 11/Eotaxin-1 may serve as a candidate biomarker for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Therapeutics targeting CCL11/Eotaxin-1 and its related signalling way to prevent and slow progression of PMOP deserve further study.
Correlation analysis for follicle-stimulating hormone and C-terminal cross-linked telopetides of type i collagen in menopausal transition women with osteoporosis

Abstract:The sudden drop in estrogen in post-menopausal women can lead to osteoporosis. About one in three women aged more than 50 years experienced an osteoporotic fracture. The aim of this study is to explore function of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in bone metabolism and osteoporosis in menopausal transition women. 164 cases of women in menopausal transition were included, and which were divided into three groups, including < 40 years group, 40-50 years group and > 50 years group. All of patients must with empty stomach, and 5 ml blood was collected from median cubital vein between second day to ninth day in menstruation period. Examination of FSH and C-terminal cross-linked telopetides of type I collagen (CTx) was performed by using ECLIA assay. The results indicated that CTx levels were distinguished among the different aged group, with the increasing level following with the increased age. FSH level in both of < 40 years and 40-50 years old women were positively correlated with CTx level (P < 0.05). The spearman rank correlation analysis results also showed that there were no significant correlation between CTx level and FSH level in > 50 years old women. There were significant differences for the CTx level between 0-40 mIU/ml group and > 40 40 mIU/ml group in all of the three ages group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, it's clinically significant for the combining examination of FSH and CTx in menopausal transition women, which could observe the bone metabolize changes quickly and sensitively, and prevent or therapy the osteoporosis in a further step.
Cold-climate vegetative buffer zones as pesticide-filters for surface runoff.

Abstract:Vegetative buffer zones adjacent to watercourses can be effective filters for diffuse pollution from agriculture. Several investigations, even during snowmelt season, have shown that retention of sediments and sediment-bound nutrients in runoff water has been high through buffer zones (BZ). It is likely that BZ also can be effective filters for sediment-bound pesticides. The retention of glyphosate, propiconazole, fenpropimorph and soil particles was studied in surface runoff experiments with 5 m wide buffer zones. Volume proportional samples were collected after each runoff episode (1999-2002). The distribution coefficient (Kd) shows moderate to high adsorption of the pesticides to the experimental soil. Results show average retention efficiency of about 51%, 48%, 85% and 34% for particles, glyphosate, propiconazole and fenpropimorph, respectively. The amount of AMPA (which is a degradation product of glyphosate), entering the BZ was high; approximately the same amount as for glyphosate. The retention efficiency through the BZ for AMPA was about 67%. There were no significant differences in removal efficiency (in %) between winter with snowmelt and summer. This is possibly due to detachment of coarser aggregates during winter, which trap more easily in the BZ. The conclusion based on this study suggests BZ to be contributors to reduced pesticide input to surface waters.
Serum CX3CL1/fractalkine Concentrations Are Positively Associated with Disease Severity in Postmenopausal Osteoporotic Patients.

Abstract:Abstract Background: The chemokine (C-X3-C motif) ligand 1 (CX3CL1), also called fractalkine (FKN), has recently been reported to be involved in osteoclastogenic process and pathological bone destruction. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the link between serum CX3CL1/FKN levels with disease progression of postmenopausal osteoporotic patients. Methods: A total of 53 women with postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP group), 51 postmenopausal non-osteoporotic female patients (PMNOP group) and 50 premenopausal non-osteoporotic healthy women of childbearing age (control group) were enrolled in the study. The bone mineral density (BMD) for all subjects was determined via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry of the lumbar spine, femoral neck, internal trochanter, total hip, greater trochanter and Ward’s triangle. The levels of FKN in the serum were examined using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. The serum bone resorption markers TRACP-5b, NTX levels, inflammation markers IL-1β and IL-6 as well as oestrogen-2(E2) were also detected in all participants. The visual analogue scores (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for low back pain were recorded in PMOP females for evaluation of osteoporotic pain and function. Results: FKN levels were significantly higher in postmenopausal osteoporotic patients compared with postmenopausal non-osteoporotic females (139.8 ± 44.3 pg/mL VS 116.5 ± 23.1 pg/mL, p < 0.05) and healthy controls (139.8 ± 44.3 pg/mL VS 109.7 ± 19.4 pg/mL, p < 0.05). Serum FKN concentrations were negatively associated with BMD at femoral neck (r = −0.394, p = 0.004), total hip(r = −0.374, p = 0.006), internal trochanter(r = −0.340, p = 0.013), greater trochanter(r = −0.376, p = 0.006), Ward’s triangle(r = −0.343, p = 0.012), L1–L4 lumbar spine(r = −0.339, p = 0.013) and positively associated with VAS (r = 0.321, p = 0.019) and ODI (r = 0.377, p = 0.005) scores, bone turnover makers (TRACP-5b:r = 0.341, p = 0.012; NTX:r = 0.364, p = 0.007)as well as inflammation markers (IL-1β: r = 0.396, p = 0.003; IL-6:r = 0.355, p = 0.009) in postmenopausal osteoporotic patients. Conclusions: Serum FKN may serve as a novel biomarker for assessing disease progression and a new potential therapeutic target for anti-resorptive treatment in osteoporosis patients.

Changes in bone resorption across the menopause transition: effects of reproductive hormones, body size, and ethnicity

Abstract:Objective: Our objective was to characterize changes in bone resorption in relation to the final menstrual period (FMP), reproductive hormones, body mass index (BMI), and ethnicity. Methods: Urinary type I collagen N-telopeptide (NTX), estradiol, and FSH levels were measured annually for up to 8 years spanning the menopause transition in 918 African American, Chinese, Japanese, or Caucasian women. Results: Urinary NTX began to increase sharply about 2 years before the FMP, reaching its peak level about 1 to 1.5 years after the FMP. NTX levels declined modestly from 2 to 6 years after the FMP but remained about 20% higher than before the menopause transition. The sharp rise in FSH occurred in conjunction with a sharp decline in estradiol and shortly after FSH levels began increasing rapidly. The mean increase in urinary NTX across the menopause transition was greatest in women with BMI <25 kg/m² and smallest in women with BMI >30 kg/m². Increases in NTX were greatest in Japanese women and smallest in African Americans. These differences were attenuated, but not eliminated, when analyses were adjusted for covariates, particularly BMI. Summary: During the menopause transition, a decline in ovarian function beginning about 2 years before the FMP is followed by an increase in bone resorption and subsequently by bone loss. The magnitude of the increase in bone resorption is inversely associated with BMI. Ethnic differences in changes in bone resorption are attenuated, but not eliminated, by adjustment for BMI. Ethnic differences in BMI, and corresponding ethnic differences in bone resorption, appear to account for much of the ethnic variation in perimenopausal bone loss.
Age-related Changes of Serum Bone Alkaline Phosphatase and Cross-Linked C-telopeptides of Type I Collagen and the Relationship with Bone Mineral Density in Chinese Women

Abstract:Background: Previous studies have shown that bone turnover rate changes with age. At the same time, there is no definitive research regarding age-related changes of bone turnover level and its association with bone mineral density (BMD) in Chinese mainland women.Methods: In a cohort of 663 Chinese mainland women aged 20-70 years, serum bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) and serum cross-linked C-telopeptides of type I collagen (sCTX) were measured to evaluate the state of bone fort-nation and resorption, respectively. BMD was measured in the posteroanterior spine, supine lateral spine, hip and forearm using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.Results: The cubic polynomial regression model best fit age-related changes in serum BAP (R-2 = 0.398 p < 0.001) and sCTX concentrations (R-2 = 0. 148,p < 0.001) with largest R-2 from comparison 8 different regression models. Their values reached a minimal level in the 30-39 years age group, and increased dramatically in the 40-59 years groups. There was a decreasing trend of BAP in women > 60 years. The levels of BAP and sCTX were inversely correlated to BMD in various skeletal regions over the entire Population (r = -0.096 to -0.357, p < 0.05). sCTX was a significant predictor of a T-score <= -2.5 of BMD in postmenopausal women with sCTX levels above mean + 2 SD of women aged 30-39 years compared with other postmenopausal women, which indicated by odds ratios 1.9-3.7 (p < 0.05) for various skeletal regions, especially for the lateral lumbar spine (2.2, p < 0.01), Ward's triangle (3.7, p < 0.01), and ultradistal end of radius+ulna (2.8, p < 0.001).Conclusions: Age-dependent serum BAP and sCTX were inversely correlated to BMD, and sCTX was a useful parameter for the prediction of a low T-score of BMD at skeletal sites with abundant cancellous bone in postmenopausal women. Abstract:OBJECTIVETo investigate the correlation between serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and total procollagen I N-terminal propeptide (TP1NP) in perimenopausal women.METHODSTotal 274 women aged 33~60 y with perimenopausal period were enrolled in this study. Serum levels of FSH and TP1NP were detected by electrochemiluminescence.RESULTSIn 274 perimenopausal women, the average level of TP1NP was (48.99±20.31) ng/mL, which was positively correlated with FSH level (r=0.159, P=0.009). In 40-50 age group, TP1NP level in women with FSH<40 mIU/mL was lower than that in those with FSH≥40mIU/mL [(35.05±18.11) ng/mL vs (51.33±24.67) ng/mL; t=-2.954, P=0.004]. However, in <40 and 50-60 age groups, there were no significant differences in TP1NP levels between patients with FSH<40 mIU/mL and those with FSH≥40 mIU/mL (t=-0.063, P=0.950; t=1.177, P=0.242). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that standardized coefficients of age variable was 0.047 (P=0.448) and standardized coefficients of FSH variable was 0.146 (P=0.019).CONCLUSIONTP1NP levels showed a certain correlation with FSH in perimenopausal women, especially for women aged 40-50, indicating that high FSH levels may be important factors for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
The impact of reproductive and menstrual history on bone mineral density in Chinese women.

Abstract:Low bone mineral density (BMD) is an important risk factor for osteoporotic fractures. The impact of gynecological history on BMD is of great concern, but the results are largely inconsistent. In this study, we investigated the association of gynecological history with BMD in 214 postmenopausal women (60.4 +/- 5.7 yr), as well as with peak bone density (PBD) in 428 premenopausal women (30.8 +/- 5.3 yr) from Shanghai City in China. BMD was measured at lumbar spine (L1-4) and total hip by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Raw BMD values were adjusted by age, age2, height, and weight. In the postmenopausal group, more parity had significantly detrimental effects on BMD at both the spine and hip (p < 0.01). The age of the first delivery, the duration of lactation, and the age at menarche did not show significant impacts on BMD (p > 0.05). More years since menopause only had marginally significant decreasing effects at the spine (p = 0.09), but not at the hip (p > 0.10). In the premenopausal group, none of the three reproductive factors had significant impact on PBD (p > 0.05); the age of menarche inversely affected PBD at both the spine (p < 0.01) and hip (p < 0.05). Our results suggest that some gynecological events might influence BMD variation in healthy Chinese women.
Relationship of Age-related Levels of Serum Sex Hormones with Bone Metabolism Markers in Women

Abstract:Objective:To explore the relationship between serum sex hormones and bone metabolism markers.Methods:Total of 202 women were divided into ＜40,40～49,50～59,60～69,and ≥ 70 years groups.The serum concentrations of FSH,LH,E2,TES and OC,PINP,β-CTX were measured by chemiluminescence.The differences of serum sex hormones and bone metabolism markers were compared among the groups,as well as the correlation between them were analysed.Results:The levels of serum FSH and LH were increased with age,and reached the peak after 50 years old.The level of serum E2 was decreased with age,after 50 years groups were significantly lower than before 49 years groups (P＜0.05).The levels of serum OC,β-CTX,PINP were increased with age,after 50 years groups were significantly higher than before 49 years groups (P＜0.05).After adjusting age,serum FSH and LH had markedly positive correlation with OC and β-CTX,and serum E2 had markedly negative correlation with β-CTX (all P＜0.01).FSH,LH and E2 were divided into quartiles.With the increased quartiles of serum FSH and LH,OC and β-CTX were increased,while β-CTX was decreased with the increased quartiles of serum E2(all P for trend ＜ 0.05).Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that serum FSH was independently positive associated with β-CTX(β=0.218,P=0.033),and LH was independently positive associated with OC(β=0.322,P=0.004).While,there was no independent correlation between E2 and OC,β-CTX,PINP.Conclusions:Bone metabolism is correlated with serum sex hormones in women.The most critical factor for bone metabolism is FSH and LH,while a decreased level of estrogen may be secondary.
Exploring the Relationship of Bone Turnover Markers and Bone Mineral Density in Community-Dwelling Postmenopausal Women

Abstract:Aims: To explore the relationships of procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP) and β cross-linked C-telopeptide of type 1 collagen (β-CTX) with bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. Methods: All postmenopausal women were selected from a community-based case-control study. The anteroposterior L1-L4 and left proximal femur BMD were measured. P1NP and β-CTX were also collected and tested. The main correlation analysis was applied to explore the relationships of BMD, P1NP, and β-CTX. Results: The total 1055 postmenopausal women were enrolled. The BMD at all sites kept a decrease continually with age (P < 0.01). In addition, the level of β-CTX increased significantly from 45 to 50 years old and remained at a high level in the later stage, while the level of P1NP changed little or even decreased with age. Logistic regression model showed that β-CTX has better ability to predict BMD than P1NP, as demonstrated by an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.63. Conclusion: P1NP and β-CTX are important markers to monitor bone metabolism. This trial is registered with ChiCTR-SOC-17013090. The date of registration is Oct. 23, 2017.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the relationship between serum matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, MMP-2 and bone turnover markers, bone mineral density (BMD) in Chinese women aged 20-80 years.METHODS:Serum MMP-1, MMP-2, bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), osteocalcin (OC) and cross-linked N-telopeptide of collagen type I (NTX) were measured using ELISA. BMD were measured using DEXA in 591 women.RESULTS:(1) MMP-1 and MMP-2 were positively correlated with age (both P < 0.001). (2) Level of MMP-2 in postmenopausal women was significantly higher than that in premenopausal women (P < 0.001). (3) Significant negative relationship was found between MMP-2 and BMD, but multiple linear stepwise regression analysis showed MMP-2 was not the determinant factor of BMD. (4) Positive correlation was found between MMP-2 and BAP, OC, NTX (all P < 0.001). (5) Serum MMP-2 concentrations were significantly higher in postmenopausal osteoporotic women than in age-matched normal controls and osteopenic subjects.CONCLUSION:Circulating MMP-2 and markers of bone turnover are related and they may increase with the increase in bone-turnover. The increase of serum MMP-2 appears possibly as a concomitant event in high bone turnover state such as postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Abstract:Background: Osteoblast-derived matrix metalloproteinse-1 (MMP-1), MMP-2 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) play a role in bone metabolism by degrading bone matrix.Methods: We measured MMP-1, MMMP-2, TIMP-1 and associated results with age and bone metabolism in 591 Chinese Women aged 20-80 y.Results: Serum MMP-1, MMP-2, and TIMP-1 concentrations exhibited positive correlation with age. Serum concentrations of MMP-1 were higher in 40-69 y old women. The concentrations of MMP-2 were significantly increased in the 50-69 y olds. Serum TIMP-1 concentrations were significantly lower in women aged 30-59 y, and then these were followed by an increase at > 60 y olds. We found a significant negative weaker correlation between MMP-2 and BMD. But multiple linear stepwise regression analysis showed that MMP-2 was not a determinant factor for BMD. There were significant positive correlations between MMP-2 and bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), osteocalcin (OC), and cross-linked N-telopeptides of type I collagen (NTX).Conclusions: The serum concentrations of MMP-1, MMP-2, and TIMP-1 exhibit age-related changes, and circulating MMP-2 and bone turnover are related. Relationships between serum osteoprotegerin, matrix metalloproteinase-2 levels and bone metabolism in postmenopausal women

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Serum osteoprotegerin (OPG) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) have been shown to play a role in bone metabolism by degrading the bone matrix. The present study was undertaken to compare OPG and MMP-2 with bone mineral density and three markers (alkaline phosphatase (AKP), calcium and phosphorus) in postmenopausal women in Wuhan.METHODS: Serum OPG, MMP-2, and AKP of 78 Chinese postmenopausal women aged 48 to 65 were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Bone mineral density was measured with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and serum calcium and phosphorus were measured by auto biochemical analysis.RESULTS: Serum OPG and MMP-2 concentrations were significantly higher in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis ((127.6 +/- 6.3) ng/L; (1388 +/- 121) microg/L)) than those in age-matched normal controls ((72.3 +/- 2.4) ng/L; (1126 +/- 141) microg/L, P < 0.01). Negative relationships were found between serum OPG, MMP-2 levels and bone mineral density in osteoporotic women. Adjusted by age and body mass index (BMI), the correlation of MMP-2 with bone mineral density of the neck of the femur disappeared. In osteoporotic women, negative correlations between OPG, MMP-2 levels and serum calcium were found (r = -0.216; r = -0.269, P < 0.05), but positive correlations between OPG and serum AKP, serum phosphorus (r = 0.235; r = 0.124, P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Significant correlations exist between serum OPG, MMP-2 levels and bone metabolism in high bone turnover of postmenopausal osteoporotic women. The concentrations of serum OPG and MMP-2 increase possibly as a concomitant event in the high bone turnover state, such as postmenopausal osteoporosis. Therefore serum OPG and MMP-2 could be used as indicators for the bone metabolism in postmenopausal osteoporotic women.

Methods Collect 35 studies on bone turnover markers reference values from 19 countries, and make comparisons. Results Bone formation markers: Asian postmenopausal women have lower levels of biochemical markers than European women (OC: Emirates<German, Japan<France; PⅠCP: Japan<German, Japan<Finland, Japan<Spain); European women have lower levels of biochemical markers than African women (BAP、OC: UK<Gambia). Bone resorption markers: African and African-American postmenopausal women have lower levels than European and Asian women (fDPD: Gambia<UK; urine NTX: Nigeria<Korea;serum CTX-Ⅰ:African-America<German); European postmenopausal women have lower levels than Asian women(fDPD: UK<Emirates). In addition,there is region difference in European postmenopausal women(urine CTX-Ⅰ:Finland<Denmark). Conclusions In postmenopausal women, there are increased levels of biochemical markers of bone turnover. What's more, there are ethnic differences in rate of bone formation markers/bone resorption markers.
Systemic Inflammation Markers Associated with Bone Mineral Density in Perimenopausal and Postmenopausal Women

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this research was to determine whether systemic inflammatory indicators, including aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI), neutrophils lymphocyte to platelet ratio (NLPR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), are related to bone mineral density (BMD) in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.Methods: One hundred and eighty-one perimenopausal and 390 postmenopausal women were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Continuous variables by analysis of variance and Kruskal Wallis test for comparing the clinical characteristics. Linear regression analysis was conducted to investigate the associations between inflammatory indicators with BMD. The comparison between the subgroups was performed using the nonparametric test and the T-test.Results: AISI, NLPR, SII, and SIRI quartile values were inversely associated with BMD in menopausal women (P = 0.021; P = 0.047; P < 0.001; P < 0.001, respectively). After adjusting for confounding factors, four inflammatory indicators remained significantly associated with BMD (all P for trend <0.001). Analysis according to menopausal status demonstrated that AISI, SII, and SIRI were significantly correlated with mean femoral neck BMD in postmenopausal women (P for trend = 0.015, 0.004, and 0.001), but not significantly associated with BMD in perimenopausal women (P for trend = 0.248, 0.054, and 0.352) after adjustment for covariates. Conclusion: The quartile values of AISI, SII, and SIRI were inversely associated with BMD in postmenopausal women, following adjustment for individual variables, hormone profiles and glucolipid metabolism profiles. AISI, SII, and SIRI have potential to be important tools for screening and prevention of bone loss in menopausal women in future clinical practice.

Abstract:Objective To explore forearm bone loss-related risk factors in postmenopausal women.Methods A total of 183 healthy women,over one year since menopause,were recruited to measure bone mineral density(BMD) of the non-dominant forearm,including the distal end of the radius and ulna,proximal end of the radius and ulna,and proximal radius alone,using peripheral dual X-ray absorptiometry(pDXA).General information of all subjects was collected with a questionnaire.In addition,urine pyridinoline,serum estradiol,parathyroid hormone,osteocalcin,and alkaline phosphatase were measured.Results It was showed that in postmenopausal women,the BMD values at all examined forearm sites declined along with aging and YSM(years since menopause).The speed of the decline was obvious in the first ten years after menopause,and was gradually moderate thereafter,which was in accordance with the axial bone measurement.Early menopause time,multiple pregnancies,and longer breastfeeding time were risk factors of bone loss and the incidence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.Comparing with those in postmenopausal women without osteoporosis,the serum levels of estrogen and calcium were lower,and serum PTH and urine Pyd/Cr were higher in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.The postmenopausal osteoporosis appeared in high bone turnover type.The usage of estrogen would reduce the early bone lose occurred in early menopause.However,the usage of estrogen was only account for 9.3% of people.conclusion Bone loss in forearm bone was similar with that in the axial bone.pDXA would be useful to screen high risk population in the society.Years since menopause,procreation status,and usage of estrogen would be the important risk factors that influenced bone mass in postmenopausal women.

Abstract:Objective To investigate changes in levels of lipids and lipoproteins in Chinese women during perimenopause and postmenopause as primary study endpoints, for the first time including lipoprotein(a). Methods The retrospective study was performed in 1015 women without hormone therapy aged 34-76 years from 20 provinces of China who visited the Beijing Obstetrics & Gynecology hospital. Menopausal status was defined by the criteria of the 2011 Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop. Results Levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol increased and that of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol decreased in the postmenopausal compared to the perimenopausal group. In the women with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m(2), total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol increased, HDL cholesterol decreased and changes in triglyceride levels were not significant. In the women with BMI < 25 kg/m(2), the increase in triglyceride levels during the transition was significant. Changes in lipoprotein(a), apolipoprotein A1 and apolipoprotein B were not significant. Comparing the groups with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m(2) vs. BMI < 25 kg/m(2), only the differences for apolipoprotein A1 and for triglycerides were significant. Triglycerides correlated positively with follicle stimulating hormone and BMI, and total cholesterol correlated positively with follicle stimulating hormone and age (all p < 0.05). Conclusions Some changes in lipids can be related to menopausal status, some to increasing age, some to both; especially triglycerides and apolipoprotein A1 were found also to be related to BMI. Surprisingly lipoprotein(a) did not change either with increasing age or during the transition despite known possible interference with estrogenic status.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Sleep quality is closely related to bone health. Aging and estrogen deficiency are known determinants of poor sleep quality and osteoporosis. However, the impact of aging and menopause on the associations between sleep quality and bone mineral density (BMD) remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between sleep quality and BMD in Chinese women vary by age groups and menopausal status. METHODS:A total of 2067 women aged 18-80 years were included. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the score >7 was indicative of poor sleep quality. BMD was determined using the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Participants were categorized into three age groups. Multiple linear regression models were conducted to evaluate the associations between sleep quality and BMD. Covariates included in the models were age, menopausal status, weight, height, percent body fat, physical activity, alcohol drinking, calcium supplement use, marital status, education and metabolic diseases. RESULTS:We observed that poor sleep quality was correlated to low total BMD and legs BMD in middle-aged women after adjusting for potential confounders. Furthermore, when we reran the regression models based on menopausal status in middle-aged women, significant associations between BMD and sleep quality were observed in premenopausal and early postmenopausal groups. CONCLUSION:Our findings showed a more robust association between sleep quality and BMD in premenopausal and early menopausal groups. Further studies should be conducted to explore whether sleep quality intervention would improve bone health of women in these periods and prevent osteoporosis in their late life.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Recent studies suggest that serum lipid profiles are related to bone mineral density (BMD). But data about this relationship on Chinese population are scarce. We investigated the relationships between serum lipid and BMD in postmenopausal Chinese women.METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 790 Chinese postmenopausal women. BMDs were measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry. Serum lipid profiles were obtained after a 12-h fasting.RESULTS: Women with serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels of at least 1·55 mmol/l had a greater prevalence of osteoporosis compared with women with lower HDL-C (≤1·54 mmol/l). After controlling for age, menopausal duration, body mass index, serum creatinine levels, outdoor activity, smoking and alcohol intake, high HDL-C levels were associated with osteoporosis (OR = 1·64, 95%CI 1·16-2·33, P < 0·01). BMD at femoral neck and total hip was significantly lower in the higher HDL-C class than the lower class (0·722 ± 0·118 vs 0·744 ± 0·120 g/cm(2) , P < 0·01; 0·800 ± 0·126 vs 0·824 ± 0·125 g/cm(2) , P < 0·01, respectively). No association was found between total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) with BMD.CONCLUSIONS: In Chinese postmenopausal women, elevated levels of serum HDL-C had a greater probability of being osteoporosis than the lower HDL-C levels. Our analysis showed higher HDL-C level that is favourable for cardiovascular diseases should be regarded as a risk factor for osteoporosis.
