Abstract:Gaseous streamer corona plasma was used to treat the wastewater containing rhodamine B (RhB). Three kinds of discharge modes, including dc discharge, pulsed discharge, and dc/pulse bias discharge, were investigated. Both of RhB degradation rate and energy efficiency were studied under experimental conditions of different peak voltages, repetitive frequencies, H2O2 concentrations, and initial pH, respectively. The results showed that the pulsed discharge had the fastest degradation rate while having an energy efficiency similar to that of dc/pulse bias discharge. The best efficiency of dc/pulse bias discharge was achieved at moderate voltage (17 kV) and low repetitive frequency (100 Hz). Additional H2O2 was found to accelerate the degradation reaction as well as decreasing initial pH. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that the products of degradation could be N, N-dimethylacetamide because of two strong peaks at 1656 and 1384 m-1.

Abstract:This paper demonstrated the effects and influencing factors in degrading aniline by gaseous streamer corona plasma along water surface under different discharging gas atmospheres. For aniline with an initial concentration of 100 mg l−1, the degradation was fastest when the reactor was not ventilated, and the degradation rate is 98.5% under 7.5 min treatment. While the degradation was slowest when Ar was ventilated, the degradation rate is 98.6% after treatment for 60 min. Some active particles were detected using a multi-channel fibre-optic spectrometer during the discharge, such as Ar, OH, N2, N2+ and N. In particular, NO was detected during air discharge. The NO and N2+ could produce NO3−; then generated nitric acid would affect the pH value of the solution. The intermediate product by N2 discharge is nitrophenol, and nitrophenol would be converted to p-benzoquinone. The O2 discharge could produce an intermediate product of aminophenol. The intermediate products in Ar discharge were in small amounts and the final mineralization effect was the best.
Degradation of Nitenpyram Pesticide in Aqueous Solution by Low-Temperature Plasma

Abstract:In order to study the new technique of plasma wastewater treatment, the degradation behaviour ofnitenpyram (NTP) pesticide was investigated in a low-temperature plasma formed during a dielectric barrier discharge process. The reactor was a radial flow sedimentation tank centred around the water inlet. We studied the effect of pesticide concentration and input power of the dielectric barrier discharge, together with the effect of external factors on the degradation of nitenpyram pesticide wastewater such as conductivity and the use of various of catalysts, and the reaction products were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The results showed that NTP could be effectively removed from aqueous solution by low-temperature plasma. Increasing the input power could improve the efficiency of degradation, conforming to a first-order kinetic model. Use of a suitable catalyst clearly improved the degradation process, as also did low conductivity. The pH of NTP was reduced with discharge time.

Abstract:The degradation of aqueous Rhodamine B (RhB) was examined using a dual-channel spark switch module designed to regulate the steepness of pulsed high voltage with microsecond rise time. Depending on the energy per pulse, a spark along the water surface (SPWS) or streamer along the water surface (STWS) was formed. STWS was found to have a better degradation effect and energy efficiency toward RhB than SPWS at the same power; however, addition of H2O2 amounts resulted in increased degradation, the effect being more pronounced using SPWS. The initial concentration of RhB also appeared to influence the rate constant of the degradation reaction. Furthermore, TiO2 films doped with Fe, Mn, and Ce were found to enhance the degradation performance of plasma. A possible reaction mechanism of plasma formation along the water surface was concluded by determination of the main inorganic products in the liquid and gas phases.

Abstract:The oxidative degradation of nitrobenzene (NB) induced by gaseous glow discharge plasma in contact with aqueous solution was investigated. The experimental results indicated that NB removal obeyed first-order kinetics under certain applied currents. The major degradation byproducts such as nitrophenols, phenol, 1,3-dinitrobenzene and carboxylic acids have been detected. The distribution of nitrophenols follows the order o- > p- > m- and oxalic, formic and acetic acids are major carboxylic intermediates. The eventual products were nitrate ion and carbon dioxide. During the treatment, a large amount of hydrogen peroxide was produced. Addition of ferrous or ferric ions into the solution greatly enhanced the degradation rate due to Fenton's reaction. The energy efficiencies of NB removal and hydrogen peroxide formation were compared with those of other discharges. Hydroxyl radicals were shown to be the most likely species responsible for NB degradation.

Abstract:Synthetic organic dye pollutants pose a serious threat to the aquatic ecological environment due to their difficulty in complete degradation. This study employed a plasma bubble array reactor to degrade individual and mixed dye pollutant solutions of Sunset Yellow (SY), Methyl Orange (MO), and Methyl Violet (MV). The degradation efficiencies and mechanisms of the plasma were investigated under different working gas atmospheres. It was found that oxygen plasma degraded the target dyes and their mixtures more significantly than air plasma. Specifically, compared with air plasma, the removal of single dyes SY, MO and MV by oxygen plasma was increased by 76.6%, 13.8% and 3%, respectively, after 20 min of treatment. As for mixed dyes, after 25 min treatment, oxygen plasma removed 99.1%, which was 31.6% higher than air plasma. However, the degradation kinetic order in oxygen plasma was SY > MO > MV, while that in air plasma was MV > MO > SY. Combined with the detection of reactive oxygen-nitrogen species (RONS), the results showed that the reactive oxygen species (ROS) played an important role in the degradation of SY, and it was also important for the degradation of MO, whereas both the ROS and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) were important for the degradation of MV. Scavenger experiments revealed that hydroxyl (·OH) and superoxide anion (·O2-) played the most important roles in the degradation process. The three dyes were basically completely degraded within 14-20 minutes of treatment, with corresponding yields of 1.94-2.79 g/kWh. Possible degradation pathways for each dye were deduced based on LC-MS and the toxicities of solutions were evaluated by phytotoxicity tests and ion chromatography. The results showed that the biotoxicity of the intermediates was significantly reduced. This study may provide a feasible option for effective application of plasma technology in organic dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:This study investigated the formation of different active species (center dot OH, H2O2, O-3) in aqueous solutions using needle-plate gas-liquid discharge non-thermal plasma (NTP) with different atmospheres (air, argon, and oxygen). The changes in the pH and conductivity of a blank solution with different discharge atmospheres were also investigated. The degradation of the model compound, bromamine acid (BAA), in an aqueous solution was investigated. The effects of different factors on the BAA degradation were studied, including the types of discharge atmospheres, initial BAA concentration, and initial pH. The experimental results showed that, after a 60-min treatment, approximately 90.86%, 68.99%, and 49.96% of BAA was removed by plasma with oxygen, air, and argon discharge atmospheres, respectively, and input discharge powers of 49.23 W, 41.49 W, and 16.17 W, respectively. The BAA removal rate was lowest with an argon discharge atmosphere; however, the energy yield with argon was 1.73 and 1.6 times those with air and oxygen, respectively. The plasma degradation of BAA fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Compared to oxygen and argon, the initial concentration had little effect on the degradation of BAA when air was introduced into the reaction system. UV-vis absorption spectra of the BAA solutions were measured to illustrate the discharge degradation mechanism. No new peaks appeared in the UV-vis analysis of the BAA solution after the 60-min treatments. Therefore, the results essentially demonstrate that NTP is a suitable alternative method for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Ozonation of the azo dye Cationic Red X-GRL was investigated in a bubble column reactor at varying operating parameters such as oxygen flow rate, temperature, initial Cationic Red X-GRL concentration, and pH. The conversion of dye increased with the increasing of pH and oxygen flow rate. As the reaction rate constant and the volumetric mass transfer coefficient increase while the ozone equilibrium concentration decreases with the temperature, there is a minimum conversion of dye at 25 °C. The increasing of initial dye concentration leads to a decreasing conversion of dye while the ozonation rate increases. The formation of intermediates and the variation of pH, TOC, and nitrate ion during ozonation were investigated by the use of some analytical instruments such as GC/MS, GC, and IC. The intermediates of weak organic acids lower the pH value of the solution. The probable degradation mechanism of the Cationic Red X-GRL in aqueous solution was deliberated with the aid of Molecular Orbital calculations. The N(12)–C(13) site in Cationic Red X-GRL, instead of the N(6)–N(7) site, is found to be the principal site for ozone cycloaddition in the degradation processes. During the degradation process, among the six nitrogen atoms of Cationic Red X-GRL, one is transferred into a nitrate ion, one is converted into an amine compound, and the remaining four are transformed into two molecules of nitrogen.
Synergistic and Efficient Degradation of Acid Red 73 by UV/O3/PDS: Kinetic Studies, Free Radical Contributions and Degradation Pathways

Abstract:Acid red 73 (AR73) is a representative dye pollutant that poses a threat to the environment and human health. Effectively removing this type of pollutant by conventional processes is difficult. However, this study found that compared with UV/PDS, UV/O-3, and PDS/O-3, UV/O-3/PDS composite system had the highest degradation effect on AR73. The degradation efficiency in the composite system reached 97.61% within 30 min, and the synergistic coefficients in the composite system were all greater than 1. In the UV/O-3/PDS system, center dot OH was the main free radical that mainly degrades AR73. The increase of PDS dosage promoted the degradation of AR73, but the increase of O-3 dosage was difficult to greatly improve the degradation of AR73 effect. The kinetic model of the apparent reaction rate was determined. The UV/O-3/PDS system can efficiently degrade AR73 in a wide range of substrate concentrations and pH levels, and at the same time showed good adaptability to various concentrations of anions (Cl-, CO32-, SO32-, and C2O42-). Under raw water quality, the degradation effect of AR73 was still as high as approximately 90%. The theoretical attack site was obtained by DFT calculation, and the possible degradation pathway of AR73 was proposed based on the GC-MS spectrum and UV-Vis absorption spectrum. The attack of -N=N- by center dot OH, SO4-, and O-3 was proposed to be the main possible degradation pathway for AR73. Therefore, this study further improves the understanding of the UV/O-3/PDS system and shows the potential applicability of this system in the treatment of dye wastewater.

Abstract:The degradation of methylene blue (MB) using an upgraded dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor was investigated in this paper. Air plasma was generated in the glass bead packed bed in the reactor, which was propagated into MB solution through a microporous diffuser plate. Microdischarge phenomenon can be observed on the interface of MB solution and the diffuser plate, where plasma active species were generated. The effects of air flow rate, initial solution concentration, initial solution pH, and initial solution conductivity on MB degradation were examined. Experimental results indicated that the proposed plasma reactor was effective for MB degradation. No obvious change in MB degradation efficiency was obtained for solution with various initial pH and conductivities, which suggested the potential of the reactor in actual wastewater treatment. The possible mechanism of the generation of plasma active species for MB degradation was proposed. In addition, the total organic carbon removal and chemical oxidation demand removal after 30 min treatment were 38.5% and 48.3%, which was higher than that obtained by ozone. The energy yield for MB degradation reached up to 9.3 g/kWh. Finally, a possible degradation pathway of MB solution was proposed.

Abstract:This work studied the degradation reaction of sulfonated dyes, indigo carmine, phenol red, and their mixtures by non-thermal plasma (NTP). Interestingly, the degradation rate constant showed a faster process and lower activation energy (Ea) for the dye mixtures than for the degradation reaction of the individual dyes. This unexpected result opened up new opportunities for understanding plasma chemistry and the interaction between reactive species formed by the plasma and the target molecule. As no catalyst or chemical additive was added to the reactor, the decrease in Ea came from a self-synergistic effect (SSE), through the dye molecules fragmentation, which resulted in plasma catalysis. The hypothesis proposed in this work is that oxysulfur (SOx) species are formed by the desulfonation reaction of dyes. The sulfonic groups (SO3) present in the chemical structures of dyes can function as precursors for forming several SOx•- species. Studies based on oxygenated sulfonated species such as SO3•-, SO4•- and SO5•- have been widely applied in advanced oxidative and reductive processes due to their satisfactory efficiency and low cost. Among them, SO4•- is the key reactive species with the best performance in the degradation of pollutants due to its high oxidation potential (E° = 2.60 V). In addition, it is an alternative source of HO• in aqueous media, improving the oxidation reaction. In order to elucidate the SSE, the kinetic process was followed by UV-Vis analysis, and the reactive species, such as alkyl, hydroxyl, and oxy-sulfur radicals were identified by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance. The by-products of the NTP degradation reaction were analyzed by ultrafast liquid chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer, and a fragmentation route was proposed.

Abstract:The effectiveness of ozone combined with ultrasound techniques in degrading reactive red X-3B is evaluated. A comparison among ozone (O3), ultrasonic (US), ozone/ultrasonic (O3/US) for degradation of reactive red X-3B has been performed. Results show that O3/US system was the most effective and the optimally synergetic factor reaches to 1.42 in O3/US system. The cavitation of ultrasound plays an important role during the degradation process. It is found that 99.2% of dye is degraded within 6min of reaction at the initial concentration of 100mg·L-1, pH of 6.52, ozone flux of 40L·h-1 and ultrasonic intensity of 200W·L-1. Ozonation reactions in conjunction with sonolysis indicate that the decomposition followed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics but the degradation efficiencies are affected by operating conditions, particularly initial pH and ultrasonic intensity. A kinetic model is established based on the reaction corresponding to operational parameters. In addition, the main reaction intermediates, such as p-benzoquinone, catechol, hydroquinone, phthalic anhydride and phthalic acid, are separated and identified using GC/MS and a possible degradation pathway is proposed during the O3/US process.
Application of liquid film dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor in the degradation of rhodamine B: Performance optimization, mechanism and pathways

Abstract:In the present work, the degradation pathways and mechanism of rhodamine B (RhB) using a novel liquid film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor were examined. Moreover, the optimization of the performance of DBD was discussed. The results showed that the atmosphere of the discharge area and the input power had a significant effect on the removal of RhB. After 21 min of treatment using DBD plasma system, about 90.2 % of RhB was degraded under the following experimental conditions: initial RhB concentration of 40 mg/L; input power of 125 W and initial pH of 6.78. The use of free radical scavengers proved that hydroxyl radicals played a key role in the degradation of RhB. In addition, the degradation intermediates of RhB were identified using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, and possible degradation pathways were proposed. During the degradation of RhB, with the extension of treatment time, the values of COD, BOD5 and TOC decreased. After the treatment using DBD plasma, the BOD5/COD of RhB solution increased from 0.0326 to 0.3867, and the biodegradability was also observed to have greatly improved. The potential toxicity was predicted by US-EPA-TEST software.

Abstract:Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma has been proven to be a promising method for the decomposition of VOCs, but the treatment process of VOCs also released gaseous byproducts including organic aerosols and NOx. A falling film gas–liquid phase DBD reactor was successively used to degrade benzene, during the process, benzene mainly reacts with the reactive species from gas phase electric discharge and then the gaseous products including NOx, dissolvable organic aerosols, etc. can be removed via the absorption and aqueous plasma reactions into a water film. Moreover, persulfate was added into the circulating water solution for enhancing the degradation of pollutants. The effect of pulse frequency, persulfate dosage, solution recycling rate, and solution initial pH value on benzene degradation was studied. Experimental results indicate that an addition of persulfate into water decreased total organic carbon (TOC) in the solution, very interesting, benzene degradation efficiency was also increased, possibly due to an enhancement on those water surface plasma reactions and the diffusion transfer of benzene into water film. Moreover, an increase in the total nitrogen (TN) in solution proved the absorption of gaseous NOx into water. EPR spectroscopy shows an increase in the reactive radicals including SO 4 ·− , ·OH, indicating an feasible activation of persulfate by discharge plasma. Radical scavenging experiments indicate that SO 4 ·− , ·OH, and 1 O 2 contributed to the degradation of benzene, and e aq contributed to the activation of persulfate into reactive radical species.

Abstract:As a widely used anthraquinone dye intermediate, bromoamine acid (BAA) exists extensively in dye wastewater. In this study, the gas-liquid discharge non-thermal plasma technology was employed to degrade BAA. Efficient removal was achieved by the system within 15 min treatment. Besides, the effects of input power, working gas flow rate and solution pH value on BAA removal efficiency were investigated. BAA removal rate increased with higher input power and lower pH value, while too high or too low working gas flow rate could lead to the decrease of BAA removal. The existence of BAA caused significant decline of aqueous ozone concentration while enhanced the production of H2O2, indicating that the aqueous ozone participated in BAA degradation. The contributions of main active species were investigated. H2O2 and UV produced by discharges showed little effects on BAA degradation individually, however led to synergistic effect by producing (OH)-O-center dot. Over 60 % removal of BAA was attributed to (OH)-O-center dot oxidation, while direct molecular ozone contributed around 20 % degradation. The second-order rate constants of BAA reacting with ozone and (OH)-O-center dot were determined to be 1.22 x 10(3) M-1 s(-1) and 4.06 x 10(9) M-1 s(-1), respectively. A kinetic model was established to predict BAA degradation. 12 degradation intermediates were detected by HPLC-Q-ToF-MS, GC-MS and HPLC-UV. The degradation was mainly caused by hydroxylation, bond cleavage and addition of (OH)-O-center dot on double bonds.

Abstract:The organic compounds of p-nitrophenol (PNP) solution was treated by the active species generated in a stirred reactor by an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ). The emission intensities of hydroxyl (OH), oxygen (O), nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen (H) and molecular (N2) were measured by optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The relations between the flow rates of the PNP solution and degradation, the degradation effects and initial pH value of the solution were also investigated. Experimental results show that there exist intense emissions of O (777.1 nm), N2 (337.1 nm), OH (306–310 nm) and NO band (200–290 nm) in the region of plasma. Given the treatment time and gas flow rate, the degradation increased as a function of discharge energy and solution flow rate, respectively. The solution flow rate for the most efficient degradation ranged from 1.414 m/s to 1.702 m/s, and contributed very little when it exceeded 2.199 m/s. This indicates the existence of diffusion-controlled reactions at a low solution flow rate and activation-controlled reactions at a high solution flow rate. Moreover, increasing or decreasing the initial pH value of neutral PNP solution (pH=5.95) could improve the degradation efficiency. Treated by APPJ, the PNP solutions with different initial pH values of 5.95, 7.47 and 2.78 turned more acidic in the end, while the neutral solution had the lowest degradation efficiency. This work clearly demonstrates the close coupling of active species, photolysis of ultraviolet, the organic solution flow rate and the initial pH value, and thus is helpful in the study of the mechanism and application of plasma in wastewater treatment.

Degradation of Congo Red by UV Photolysis of Nitrate: Kinetics and Degradation Mechanism

Abstract:The efficiency of Congo red (CR) removal by low-pressure ultraviolet photolysis of nitrate (UV/NO3-) process was investigated in this study. Results showed that CR degradation through direct UV (254 nm) photolysis could be ignored, but CR was obviously removed in UV/NO3- process. Moreover, the contributions of UV, (NO2)-N-center dot and (OH)-O-center dot to the degradation of CR were explored to be roughly 0.63%, 17.46% and 81.90%, respectively. In addition, the observed pseudo-first-order rate constants for the degradation of CR (k(obs)) were assessed by the effects of different water matrices and operation conditions, including NO3- dosage, CR concentration, solution pH, chloride ion (Cl-), natural organic matter (NOM) and carbonate/bicarbonate (CO32-/HCO3-). The kobs was increased by nearly 12.9 times with the addition of NO3- dosage from 1 mM to 200 mM due to the generation of more active components (e.g., (OH)-O-center dot and (NO2)-N-center dot). Higher doses of CR reduced the kobs, which could be attributed to the filter effects of CR on UV irradiation. Although the photolysis of NO3- could be expedited under acidic conditions, the k(obs) was decelerated because of the protonation of CR (pKa = 4.1, 25 degrees C). While in alkaline conditions, the kobs was also reduced as the decrease in redox potential of center dot OH. The presence of Cl-(0.7 mM) exhibited no scavenging effect on the kobs, which suggested the secondary radicals (i.e., chlorine radicals (e.g., Cl-center dot, Cl-2(center dot-))) could oxidize CR effectively. NOM restricted the degradation of CR significantly, resulting from the filter effects of NOM (epsilon = 0.11 L.mgC(-1).cm(-1)) on UV and the effects of radical scavenging. The kobs was improved obviously with the participation of CO32- /HCO3- (0.7mM), ascribing to the oxidation of carbonate radical (CO3 center dot-) and the increased steady state concentration of (NO2)-N-center dot. The degradation of CR in UV/NO3- process has the potential for practical applications in real water. Furthermore, eight intermediates were proposed by Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Hydroxylation, nitrification and other aromatic products in the reaction of CR with (OH)-O-center dot and/or (NO2)-N-center dot were readily produced by H-abstraction, addition reaction and electron transfer.

Abstract:A two-stage system of dye wastewater treatment was proposed, containing reverse osmosis (RO) process and non-thermal plasma (NTP) degradation. The dye wastewater was concentrated by reverse osmosis to enhance the mass transfer of organic dye from the falling film to the reaction interface, promoting dye removal and energy yield of the plasma degradation. The effects of the methylene blue concentration (100–500 mg·L -1 ), flow rate, and the discharge power of plasma (40–100 W) on the methylene blue removal and the energy yield of the NTP mode were investigated. At the removal of 45%, the energy yield of RONTP mode was 1198.0 mg·kWh −1 , which was 2.36 times than NTP mode. 8 degradation intermediates were detected by LC-MS, which mass/charge ratio were in the range of 80–400. This investigation provides a guidance to improve the energy yield of dye wastewater by plasma through mass transfer enhancement.

Abstract:In this work, the combined ultraviolet ozone process (UV/O3) was applied for organic contaminant (Reactive Blue K-GL, RB) degradation in high salinity. The degradation rates of RB in both O3 and UV/O3 systems were enhanced by NaCl (the k increased from 0.080 to 0.116 to 0.132 and 0.267 min-1 respectively), while mineralization rate varied at different salt conditions. In addition, UV irradiation promoted the degradation efficiency of RB with the presence of salt. Singlet oxygen (1O2) was the primary active species in the UV/O3 system. The quenching experiments and signal intensity of 1O2 corresponded well to the mineralization of RB. Under conditions of high salinity and high pH, O3 has high mass transfer coefficient (kLa, 3.303 min-1) and self-decomposition (kd, 0.600 min-1), which further promoted the formation of 1O2 for mineralization of RB. Furthermore, UV/O3 system was efficient in real textile wastewater treatment (CODCr removal rate 91.7% and decolorization rate 98.7%).
