Abstract:Using a diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) technique, we calculated the phase diagrams of $^4$He and H$_2$ adsorbed on a single (5,5) carbon nanotube, one of the narrowest that can be obtained experimentally. For a single monolayer, when the adsorbate density increases, both species undergo a series of first order solid-solid phase transitions between incommensurate arrangements. Remarkably, the $^4$He lowest-density solid phase shows supersolid behavior in contrast with the normal solid that we found for H$_2$. The nature of the second-layer is also different for both adsorbates. Contrarily to what happens on graphite, the second-layer of $^4$He on that tube is a liquid, at least up to the density corresponding to a third-layer promotion on a flat substrate. However, the second-layer of H$_2$ is a solid that, at its lowest stable density, has a small but observable superfluid fraction.

Abstract:Using a diffusion Monte Carlo technique, we calculated the phase diagram of 3He adsorbed on a first solid layer of a molecular hydrogen isotope (H2, HD, and D2) on top of graphite. The results are qualitatively similar in all cases: a two-dimensional gas spanning from the infinite dilution limit to a second-layer helium density of 0.048 ± 0.004 Å−2. That gas is in equilibrium with a 7/12 commensurate structure, more stable than any incommensurate triangular solid of similar density. These findings are in reasonably good agreement with available experimental data.

The upper limit of 60 K is approximately the upper limit of available 3He property measurements. The new state equation form is based on Debye function which goes smoothly to zero in the limit of zero temperature and reduces to the ideal gas in the limit of zero density and/or very high temperature. The equation combines (a) necessary temperature-independent compressibility terms at the lowest temperatures, (b) terms describing the linear specific heat of a Fermi fluid below 1 K, (c) terms describing the phonon excitations which begin above about 1 K, and (d) terms which attempt to fit the conventional critical point thermodynamics at 3.3157 K and 114 604 Pa. State properties, e.g., p-V-T relations, specific heats, thermal expansion, sound velocity, etc., are determined from the Helmholtz energy by standard thermodynamics. Transport properties, e.g., thermal conductivity and viscosity, are not obtained in this work.

Abstract:An equation of state for normal liquid 3He has been constructed in the form of Helmholtz free energy as a function of independent parameters—temperature, and density. The equation was fitted simultaneously to the collected experimental p-ρ-T, specific heat, sound velocity, isobaric expansion coefficient and isothermal compressibility coefficient from the world’s literature to accuracies comparable with reasonable experimental errors in the measured quantities. Extensive comparisons between the equation of state and experimental data have been made by a set of deviation plots. The state equation is valid in the region for temperatures from 0.1 K to T c = 3.3157 K, and for pressures from vapor pressures to melting pressures.
Supersolidity in quantum films adsorbed on graphene and graphite

Abstract:Using quantum Monte Carlo we have studied the superfluid density of the first layer of $^4$He and H$_2$ adsorbed on graphene and graphite. Our main focus has been on the equilibrium ground state of the system, which corresponds to a registered $\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3$ phase. The perfect solid phase of H$_2$ shows no superfluid signal whereas $^4$He has a finite but small superfluid fraction (0.67%). The introduction of vacancies in the crystal makes the superfluidity increase, showing values as large as 14% in $^4$He without destroying the spatial solid order.

Abstract:The phase diagrams of $^4$He adsorbed on the external surfaces of single armchair carbon nanotubes with radii in the range 3.42 -- 10.85 Å\ are calculated using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. For nanotubes narrower than a (10,10) one, the ground state is an incommensurate solid similar to the one found for H$_2$ on the same substrates. For wider nanotubes, the phase with the minimum energy per particle is a liquid layer. Curved $\sqrt 3 \times \sqrt 3$ registered solids similar to the ones found on graphene and graphite were unstable for all the tubes considered.

Superfluidity of quasi-2D He-4 droplets on graphite

Abstract:The superfluid response of nanoscale size quasi-2D He-4 droplets adsorbed on a graphite substrate is investigated by computer simulations. It is found that clusters comprising as few as 7 atoms are stable at temperatures lower than < 0.15 K. Clusters of ~20 atoms or less are liquid-like and ~100% superfluid. As the size is increased, the central region crystallizes, forming the commensurate C_1/3 phase, with a surface sliver of superfluidity evolving into a perimetral 1D Luttinger liquid with increasing cluster size. The relevance to quasi-2D molecular spectroscopy and to transverse quantum superfluidity is discussed.

Abstract:Based on the Debye state equation and the phase equilibrium equations of helium-3,a computer program for calculating the thermodynamic properties of helium-3 has been developed.Based on a series of calculations,the p-h and T-s graphs of helium-3 have been plotted in the range of temperature from 0.2 K to 300 K and pressure from 0.000 1MPa to 30 MPa.Compared with the p-h and T-s graphs(0.2 K to 20 K) plotted based on the experimental data before,the new graphs are based on the thermodynamic theoretical calculation and provide a broader temperature scope of application.The overall random errors of these two graphs are within 2%.

Phases of 4He and H2 adsorbed on doped graphene

Abstract:The influence of attractive boron impurities, embedded on a graphene sheet, on the phase diagrams of $^4$He and H$_2$ adsorbed on top was studied using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The doping of graphene was made by distributing the boron atoms following the same pattern found in an experimentally synthesized substrate. Our results show that while the different incommensurate solid phases of both adsorbates remain largely unchanged after doping, the liquid/gas equations of state are significanty different from the ones on pristine graphene. Doping graphene produces new translationally invariant stable phases for $^4$He, depending on the concentration of boron impurities, but makes the H$_2$ ground state to remain solid. In addition, several new registered phases appear for both adsorbates.

Abstract:Single-crystal x-ray diffraction has been performed on solid $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ from 1 to 58 GPa over the temperature range 46--400 K. The high-density properties of helium are pinned down: the hcp structure is stable apart from an fcc loop along melting in between 15 K and around 285 K; comparison of the 304 K hcp equation of state with a series of calculations demonstrates there are significant attractive many-body interactions; and the thermal pressure has been measured between 95 and 304 K and it differs from self-consistent phonon calculations.

Abstract:In this paper molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the accumulation behaviour of N 2 and H 2 at water/graphite interface under ambient temperature and pressure. It finds that both N 2 and H 2 molecules can accumulate at the interface and form one of two states according to the ratio of gas molecules number to square of graphite surface from our simulation results: gas films （pancake-like） for a larger ratio and nanobubbles for a smaller ratio. In addition,we discuss the stabilities of nanobubbles at different environment temperatures. Surprisingly,it is found that the density of both kinds of gas states can be greatly increased,even comparable with that of the liquid N 2 and liquid H 2 . The present results are expected to be helpful for the understanding of the stable existence of gas film （pancake-like） and nanobubbles.
Superfluidity of $^4$He Confined in Nano-Porous Media

Abstract:We have examined superfluid properties of $^4$He confined to a nano-porous Gelsil glass that has nanopores 2.5 nm in diameter. The pressure-temperature phase diagram was determined by torsional oscillator, heat capacity and pressure studies. The superfluid transition temperature $T_{\mathrm c}$ approaches zero at 3.4 MPa, indicating a novel "quantum" superfluid transition. By heat capacity measurements, the nonsuperfluid phase adjacent to the superfluid and solid phases is identified to be a nanometer-scale, localized Bose condensation state, in which global phase coherence is destroyed. At high pressures, the superfluid density has a $T$-linear term, and $T_{\mathrm c}$ is proportional to the zero-temperature superfluid density. These results strongly suggest that phase fluctuations in the superfluid order parameter play a dominant role on the phase diagram and superfluid properties.

Abstract:The presently existing thermodynamic data of liquid 3He-4He mixtures between 0 and 20 atm in the limit of absolute zero temperature are presented in a coherent way, without reference to models, through constructing the thermodynamic surface ε(n3, n4), where ε is the energy density and n3, n4 are the molar densities. The chemical potentials are the partial derivative of ε. The construction is made through the information contained in the existing thermodynamical data. The geometrical meaning of the surface whose coordinates are the energy density and the molar densities of both components is explained. In the pressure range considered the energy density and the chemical potentials are determined as a function of the molar densities. Details of the thermodynamic functions are summarized in the tables at the end of the article. Special attention is given to the saturated solution curve and the one-phase region in which the energy density appears to be expandable not in integral but in fractional powers of the 3He density.

Abstract:Single-crystal x-ray diffraction measurements have been performed on solid $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ from 15.6 to 23.3 GPa at 300 K with synchrotron radiation. The diffraction patterns demonstrate that the structure of the solid is hexagonal close packed over this pressure-temperature range, contrary to both the interpretation of high-pressure optical studies and to theoretical predictions. The solid is more compressible than is indicated by equations of state calculated with recently determined helium pair potentials. The results suggest that a significant revision of current views of the phase diagram and energetics of dense solid helium is in order.
Superfluid $β$ phase in liquid $^3$He

Abstract:We report the first observation of superfluid $\beta$ phase of $^3$He. This phase is realized in $^3$He in nematic aerogel in presence of high magnetic field right below the superfluid transition temperature. We use a vibrating aerogel resonator to detect the transition to the $\beta$ phase and measure the region of existence of this phase.
