Abstract:Simulation is a useful and common technique to evaluate the performance of networks when the implementation of a real scenario is not available. Specifically for Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN), it is crucial to perform evaluations in environments as close as possible to the real conditions of use. To achieve that, simulations must include different protocol layers involved in WBAN and models close to reality to create realistic simulation environments for e-health applications. To satisfy these needs, this work presents the BNS framework, a flexible tool for WBAN simulations. The proposal is an extension of the Castalia framework, which includes: (1) a new wireless channel model considering real radio-propagation over the human body; (2) an updated implementation of the WBAN MAC protocol in Castalia, with functionalities and requirements in accordance with the IEEE 802.15.6 standard; (3) a new comprehensive and configurable mobility model for simulating intra-WBAN communication; (4) a temperature module based on the Pennes bioheat transfer equation, to model the temperature of a WBAN node based on the activity of the node; and (5) a Healthcare Application Layer that implements data representation and a communication protocol between Personal Health Devices (PHD) following the ISO/IEEE 11073 standard. Three use cases are presented, where WBAN scenarios are simulated and evaluated using the proposed BNS framework. Results show that BNS is a valid and flexible tool to evaluate WBAN solutions through simulation.
Adaptive Body Area Networks Using Kinematics and Biosignals

Abstract:The increasing penetration of wearable and implantable devices necessitates energy-efficient and robust ways of connecting them to each other and to the cloud. However, the wireless channel around the human body poses unique challenges such as a high and variable path-loss caused by frequent changes in the relative node positions as well as the surrounding environment. An adaptive wireless body area network (WBAN) scheme is presented that reconfigures the network by learning from body kinematics and biosignals. It has very low overhead since these signals are already captured by the WBAN sensor nodes to support their basic functionality. Periodic channel fluctuations in activities like walking can be exploited by reusing accelerometer data and scheduling packet transmissions at optimal times. Network states can be predicted based on changes in observed biosignals to reconfigure the network parameters in real time. A realistic body channel emulator that evaluates the path-loss for everyday human activities was developed to assess the efficacy of the proposed techniques. Simulation results show up to 41% improvement in packet delivery ratio (PDR) and up to 27% reduction in power consumption by intelligent scheduling at lower transmission power levels. Moreover, experimental results on a custom test-bed demonstrate an average PDR increase of 20% and 18% when using our adaptive EMG- and heart-rate-based transmission power control methods, respectively. Exploiting Link Diversity for Performance-Aware and Repeatable Simulation in Low-Power Wireless Networks

Abstract:Network simulation is a fundamental service for performance testing and protocol design in wireless networks. Due to the wireless dynamics, it is highly challenging to provide repeatable and reliable simulation results that are comparable to the empirical experimental results. To achieve repeatability for simulation, the existing works focus on reproducing the behaviors on individual links. However, as observed in recent works, individual link behaviors alone are far from enough to characterize the protocol-level performance. As a result, even if the link behaviors can be simulated very closely, these works often fail to simulate the protocol performance with high reliability. In this article, we propose a novel performance-aware simulation approach which can preserve not only the link-level behaviors but also the performance-level behaviors. We first combine the spatial-temporal link diversity to devise an accurate performance model. Based on the model, we then propose a Performance Aware Hidden Markov Model (PA-HMM), where the protocol performance is directly fed into the Markov state transitions. Compared to the existing works, PA-HMM is able to simulate both link-level behaviors and high-level protocol performance. We conduct extensive testbed and simulation experiments with broadcast and anycast protocols. The results show that 1) the proposed model is able to accurately characterize communication performance for both broadcast and anycast and 2) the protocol performance is closely simulated as compared to the empirical results and the PA-HMM based simulation is more repeatable compared to the existing works.

Abstract:Wireless body area network (WBAN) is a new enabling system with promising applications in areas such as remote health monitoring and interpersonal communication. Reliable and optimum design of a WBAN system relies on a good understanding and in-depth studies of the wave propagation around a human body. However, the human body is a very complex structure and is computationally demanding to model. This paper aims to investigate the effects of the numerical model's structure complexity and feature details on the simulation results. Depending on the application, a simplified numerical model that meets desired simulation accuracy can be employed for efficient simulations. Measurements of ultra wideband (UWB) signal propagation along a human arm are performed and compared to the simulation results obtained with numerical arm models of different complexity levels. The influence of the arm shape and size, as well as tissue composition and complexity is investigated.

Abstract:RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The debate about whether to dedicate funds to rare diseases (RD) may hinge on the existence of a societal preference for prioritizing rarity. There are scarce studies about the interest of doctors and general society in RD. METHOD Four groups of future health and non-health professionals were surveyed in a region of Spain to evaluate their opinion on RD. Questions of the study were organized into four groups: general knowledge on RD, prioritization of research of RD, willingness to assign resources to RD and real distribution of resources to RD. RESULTS A total of 234 students were surveyed. The mean age of the whole study population was 24.0 years and the 83.3% were female. Only around 25% of the survey sample knew the definitions of RD and orphan drugs. Questions related to willingness to assign resources to RD did not reveal statistically significant differences between study groups. Seventy-three per cent considered that the majority of the budget should be used to treat common diseases. However, resident doctors recognized that they have neither experience nor time to diagnose and treat RD. CONCLUSION Although resident doctors have a little more general knowledge on RD than other surveyed groups, health and non-health future professionals have a low general knowledge on this topic and none of them prioritized the assignment of funds to RD.

Abstract:With the increasing wide applications of wearable wireless networks, body-to-body networks (BBNs) have become significantly important to provide timely and reliable data delivery services. For a specific BBN, assessing its theoretically achievable Quality of Service (QoS) is necessary, especially on the key performance metrics of end-to-end delay distribution and packet loss ratio. The existing analysis models in the literature mainly focused on 1-D space scenarios. In this article, BBN in a 2-D area is considered, where mobile nodes freely and stochastically move along lanes. By introducing two new definitions: 1) node entrance probability and 2) network entrance probability, a systematically analytical framework for end-to-end delay distribution and packet loss ratio is presented. The proposed analytical framework is built on three critical techniques: 1) the Markov chain to model node behaviors; 2) the first passage theory to calculate node entrance probability and network entrance probability; and 3) the central limit theory to decrease the computation time for summing up per-hop delay. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of our proposed analysis model.

Optimizing Data Forwarding from Body Area Networks in the Presence of Body Shadowing with Dual Wireless Technology Nodes

Abstract:In this paper we are concerned with the problem of data forwarding from a wireless body area network (WBAN) to a gateway when body shadowing affects the ability of WBAN nodes to communicate with the gateway. To solve this problem we present a new WBAN architecture that uses two communication technologies. One network is formed between on-body nodes, and is realized with capacitive body-coupled communication (BCC), while an IEEE 802.15.4 radio frequency (RF) network is used for forwarding data to the gateway. WBAN nodes that have blocked RF links due to body shadowing forward their data through the BCC link to a node that acts as a relay and has an active RF connection. For this architecture we design a network layer protocol that manages the two communication technologies and is responsible for relay selection and data forwarding. Next, we develop analytical performance models of the medium access control (MAC) protocols of the two independent communication links in order to be used for driving the decisions of the previous algorithms. Finally, the analytical models are used for further optimizing energy and delay efficiency. We test our system under different configurations first by performing simulations and next by using real RF traces.

A review of radio channel models for body centric communications

Abstract:The human body is an extremely challenging environment for the operation of wireless communications systems, not least because of the complex antenna-body electromagnetic interaction effects which can occur. This is further compounded by the impact of movement and the propagation characteristics of the local environment which all have an effect upon body centric communications channels. As the successful design of body area networks (BANs) and other types of body centric system is inextricably linked to a thorough understanding of these factors, the aim of this paper is to conduct a survey of the current state of the art in relation to propagation and channel models primarily for BANs but also considering other types of body centric communications. We initially discuss some of the standardization efforts performed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 802.15.6 task group before focusing on the two most popular types of technologies currently being considered for BANs, namely narrowband and Ultrawideband (UWB) communications. For narrowband communications the applicability of a generic path loss model is contended, before presenting some of the scenario specific models which have proven successful. The impacts of human body shadowing and small-scale fading are also presented alongside some of the most recent research into the Doppler and time dependencies of BANs. For UWB BAN communications, we again consider the path loss as well as empirical tap delay line models developed from a number of extensive channel measurement campaigns conducted by research institutions around the world. Ongoing efforts within collaborative projects such as Committee on Science and Technology Action IC1004 are also described. Finally, recent years have also seen significant developments in other areas of body centric communications such as off-body and body-to-body communications. We highlight some of the newest relevant research in these areas as well as discussing some of the advanced topics which are currently being addressed in the field of body centric communications.

Abstract:Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) can be considered as an evolution of wireless sensor networks towards wearable and implanted technologies. Radio propagation and mobility are particular in this context, as they are influenced by the characteristics and movement of the human body and by the necessity to keep the transmission power at its minimum to save energy and limit interactions with the wearer. In this paper, we investigate the broadcasting problem in which a node, typically the gateway, tries to send a packet to all other nodes in the network at minimal cost. This problem is not as trivial as it looks and we show through simulation that forwarding strategies coming from the Delay Tolerant Networks world cannot be transposed without adaptation. We enriched the Omnet++ simulator with a WBAN-specific channel model from the literature, and use this model to evaluate 9 classes of broadcasting algorithms, including our own proposals, with respect to their ability to cover the whole network, their completion delay, their cost in terms of transmissions volume and their capability to preserve multiple packets order (i.e. total order broadcast). Our study shows that there is a subtle compromise to find between verbose strategies that achieve good performance at the cost of numerous transmissions, ultimately provoking collisions and more cautious solutions that miss transmission opportunities because of mobility.

Channel Deviation-Based Power Control in Body Area Networks

Abstract:Internet enabled body area networks (BANs) will form a core part of future remote health monitoring and ambient assisted living technology. In BAN applications, due to the dynamic nature of human activity, the off-body BAN channel can be prone to deep fading caused by body shadowing and multipath fading. Using this knowledge, we present some novel practical adaptive power control protocols based on the channel deviation to simultaneously prolong the lifetime of wearable devices and reduce outage probability. The proposed schemes are both flexible and relatively simple to implement on hardware platforms with constrained resources making them inherently suitable for BAN applications. We present the key algorithm parameters used to dynamically respond to the channel variation. This allows the algorithms to achieve a better energy efficiency and signal reliability in everyday usage scenarios such as those in which a person undertakes many different activities (e.g., sitting, walking, standing, etc.). We also profile their performance against traditional, optimal, and other existing schemes for which it is demonstrated that not only does the outage probability reduce significantly, but the proposed algorithms also save up to average transmit power compared to the competing schemes.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient simulation technology to characterize the Ultra-Wide Band signal propagation between the antennas in close proximity to a human body, where the human body works as a Wireless Body Area Network. The first technique is the hybrid Method of Moments and asymptotic Physical Optics in which the formulation is extended for modeling the dielectric body. The second technique combines the modification of the Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm with the Impedance Boundary Condition. These two techniques drastically reduce the computational complexity to model and simulate an electrically very large and complex structure including antennas and human body. Numerical examples showing the effects of the human body on the Ultra-Wide Band signal transmission between two antennas are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed method.

Abstract:In the past few years mobile healthcare has attracted a lot of attention from both industry and academia. Medical sensors are usually attached to or implanted inside patient body. Since sensing results of BAN can directly impact the control of medical equipment, the authenticity and integrity of sensing data is essential for safety of patients. Existing research focuses on differentiating on-body sensors from off-the-body impersonators with the help from a control unit. In this paper, we propose to exploit wireless channel characteristics to detect on-body impersonators in BAN networks. Depending on whether or not the sensors have line-of-sight connections with the off-the-body control unit, their communication channels demonstrate different properties. For an attacker who demonstrates similar channel characteristics as the victim, a user-configurable challenge-response mechanism is designed to expose the conflicting information submitted by the two nodes. Our simulation results show that with a small increase in communication and computation overhead, we can effectively detect the on-body impersonators.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cross-layer design to make ambulatory health monitoring via body area networks (BAN) more reliable and robust. The proposed design builds on our centralized body area network access scheme (CBAS), a receiver-initiated medium access control (MAC) scheme that improves the visibility of a BAN in a coexistent environment, where diverse networks with various physical and MAC protocols share the radio spectrum. The design enhances CBAS by incorporating a network layer scheme that improves the packet delivery ratio (PDR), while minimizing the need for multihop cooperative transmissions; thus, packet delay is less compromised to achieve higher PDRs. The MAC layer provides the network layer with local information about the quality of on-body links to enable the BAN to identify the most reliable links in a distributed manner. Extensive experimental results are presented, which give insights on how the proposed cross-layer design improves PDR and packet delay. Results show the effectiveness of the proposed design which takes advantage of dynamic scheduling and multihop relays as warranted by the link conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a mobile device aided cooperative transmission scheme for Body Area Networks (BANs). Usually, a BAN is required to operate in a very low power level to conserve energy consumption and reduce the electromagnetic radiation impact on human body. Cooperative transmission is an efficient technique to enhance the transmission reliability and maintain a low transmission power. In the proposed cooperation scheme, a mobile device acts as the relay of the network and help the sensors to forward the data it has received. Rake receiver for Ultra WideBand (UWB) receiving and Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) method are employed to deal with the multipath reflections of BAN channel. The power allocation between the sensor and the mobile device is optimized to enhance the transmission reliability. The simulation result shows that the proposed cooperative transmission scheme can significantly reduce the Bit Error Rate (BER) and prolong the system lifetime, compared to the non-cooperative scheme. The BER gain is over one order in the high SNR region, while the energy consumption is 20% off in the low BER region.
Simulative Investigations of Wireless Body Area Network through Varied Channel Conditions

Abstract:In this paper, the power profile for WBAN channel have been generated by using Rayleigh and Weibull distributions. [1]The value of mean path loss has been calculated and compared for different values of carrier frequency , relative body movement and number of scatterers. Moreover, the channel gain profiles have been plotted to obtain mean fading values for the optimum values of carrier frequency, relative body movement velocity and scattering density. Through extensive simulations, those values have been identified which shows minimum fading.

Abstract:We study the potential of cognition and cooperation in Body Area Networks (BANs). On one hand, most BAN-based applications involve end-to-end transmission across heterogenous networks. Cognitive communication has been known to be an effective technology for addressing network heterogeneity. On the other hand, a BAN is normally required to provide reliable communications and operate in a very low power level to conserve energy and reduce the electromagnetic radiation impact on human body. Cooperative communication has been known to enhance the transmission reliability and maintain low transmission power. However, the joint cognitive and cooperative mechanism has not been investigated yet in the literature. In this paper, we propose a network architecture for cognitive and cooperative communications in BANs. An intelligent mobile device is introduced as either a cognitive gateway to interconnect heterogenous networks; or a cooperative relay node to achieve transmission diversity. Two cooperative transmission schemes, Energy-conserved Cooperative Transmission and Reliability-driven Cooperative Transmission, are presented for different applications that have distinct energy consumption or reliability requirement. Optimization problems are formulated to optimally allocate power in the cooperative transmission. Results indicate that cooperative transmission schemes can significantly decrease Bit Error Rate (BER) and reduce energy consumption, compared to the non-cooperative schemes. The BER gain is over one order in the high SNR region, while the energy consumption can save up to 50% in the low BER region.

Abstract:Wireless body area networks (WBANs) consist of small intelligent wireless sensors attached on or implanted in the body to collect vital biomedical data for providing a Continuous Health Monitoring System for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. To fully exploit the benefits of WBANs the power consumption and sampling rate should be restricted to a minimum. The power usage can be minimised by optimising the features of multipath fading channels (MFCs) such as the number of arrival paths. That is why an improving of MFCs as well as a simple and generic channel model is inevitably required. With this in mind, compressed sensing (CS) theory, as a new sampling procedure, is employed to MFCs. Advance WBANs with the authors new model for MFCs based on CS theory will be able to deliver healthcare not only to patients in hospital and medical centres; but also in their homes and workplaces thus offering cost saving, and improving the quality of life. The authors simulation results illustrate 20% reduction for path loss and 10% for bit‐error rate at gate way (GW). The simulation results also confirm that signal amplitude at GW increases by 25%, which will result in an increase, in the distance, between transmitter and receiver sensors.
Channel Modeling of UWB-Based Wireless Body Area Networks

Abstract:This paper presents channel measurements for wireless body area network (WBAN) and provides performance evaluation using the model derived from measurement and the model in the final document of the IEEE802.15.6 channel modeling subcommittee. We measure the radio propagation from 3.0GHz to 5.0GHz which falls in ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency range in an anechoic chamber and give out a static model. 10 positions for medical entertainment and sports application are chosen to conduct measurement on a fat body, a normal body and a thin body in order to compare different path loss of different types of body for Chinese people. Moreover, we compare the bit error ratio (BER) of a single carrier UWB (SC-UWB) system which employs different receiving policies such as rake, equalizer and channel coding. The results show that slimmer people cause less path loss in the valid distance from 100mm to 1000mm. The measured model we derived has less multi-path effect than that of the model in the final report given by IEEE802.15.6 channel modeling subcommittee. Even though, rake receiver, equalizer and channel coding are needed to get a satisfying system performance.
