Abstract:Coupling two-dimensional (2D) electroactive species with 3D carbon substrates is a very promising strategy to fabricate advanced electrodes for high-performance flexible electrical energy storage devices. However, the intractable coupling between them has prevented the wide applications of such a strategy. Herein, we develop a facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis technique to directly construct NiS-MoS2 heteronanosheet arrays on carbon cloth (NiS-MoS2 HNSAs/CC) via introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate as the surfactant together with Ni, Mo, and S sources. Such vertically aligned nanosheet heterostructures constructed an integrated 3D open framework, helping improve the performance of electrodes from various aspects. Consequently, the NiS-MoS2 HNSAs/CC electrode achieves a very high areal capacity and specific capacity (0.76 mAh.cm(-2) and 271.7 mAh.g(-1), respectively, at a current density of 2.5 mA.cm(-2)) and good rate capability (39% at 40 mA.cm(-2)). With the NiS-MoS2 HNSAs as a positive electrode and typical activated carbon as a negative electrode, the fabricated solid-state hybrid capacitors have a high output cell voltage of 1.6 V and thus deliver a high energy density of 3.75 mWh.cm(-3) at a power density of 31.6 mW.cm(-3) with excellent flexibility and charging discharging stability.

Abstract:Graphite has been widely used as an anode material for commercial lithium-ion battery applications because of its excellent stability and low cost. However, graphite-based anodes need to improve the energy storage capacities to meet the increasing power demands of next-generation technologies. Here, we have developed a class of novel and flexible electrode materials that consist of N-doped graphene quantum dots supported by carbon nanotubes grown on carbon cloth (denoted as CC/CNT@N-GQD). Such architecture synergistically combines the advantages of three dimensions/one dimension substrates and zero dimension N-GQDs. It greatly improves the electron/ion transport kinetics of N-GQDs, resulting in attractive electrochemical performance in terms of high reversible capacity and excellent rate capability. Moreover, the annealing temperature plays an important role in the control of N-doping types of CC/CNT@N-GQD. CC/CNT@N-GQD anodes annealed at 500 degrees C have a high content of pyridinic N, exhibiting a very excellent rate capability and cycling stability, as exemplified by a capacity of 2.88 mAh cm(-2) at 4 mA cm(-2) and a reversible capacity of 3.63 mAh cm(-2) after 150 cycles at 0.19 mA cm(-2). Abstract:Carbon with a theoretical lithium storage capacity of 372 mAh g(-1) has been widely used in commercial lithium-ion batteries. Increasing the capacity beyond this limit is highly desirable and needed, but challenging. Tailoring the structure and/or introducing heteroatom to carbon lattice may dramatically improve the lithium storage capability. Herein, in situ nitrogen-doped helical mesoporous carbonaceous nanotubes with ultra-high specific surface areas of 1170 m(2) g(-1) are designed. Applied as an anode material for LIBs, the as-prepared sample delivers a superior capacity of 1812 mA h g(-1) after 150 cycles at a current density of 123 mA g(-1) , and 1336 mA hg(-1) after 300 cycles at 372 mA g(-1) , suggesting that the unique nanoarchitecture provides plentiful lithium ion storage sites and facilitates the electrolyte and electron transport. The lone pairs of electrons of nitrogen atoms would alter the electronic properties of carbon, facilitating electron donation to Li ions. The strategy of rational design and synthesis of carbon nanostructures offer prospects in developing high-performance energy conversion and storage devices/systems. (c) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted great attention for energy storage and conversion applications due to their highly porous structure and tunable chemical composition that can be designed at the molecular level. Accordingly, it becomes highly urgent to develop novel strategies for fabricating MOFs or MOF-derived functional materials. Utilizing the self-assembly of Fe-based MOFs, [Fe(MeIm)(2)](n) (MeIm = 2-methylimidazolate) on N-doped carbon nanowebs (NCWs), a well-defined 3D hierarchical architecture with ultrasmall Fe3O4 nanodots embedded within an N-doped carbon (NC) framework is obtained in this work. Remarkably, this self-assembly process is also applicable to other types of MOFs, such as [Co(MeIm)(2)](n) and ([Ni(MeIm)(2)](n)), and other types of carbon substrates, such as 1D carbon nanotubes and 2D graphene. Benefiting from the unique structural advantages of the materials prepared through such a MOF-engaged method, the as-prepared 3D structured NCW@Fe3O4/NC composite exhibits outstanding reversible capacity, excellent rate behavior (723 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)), and good cycling performance (1741 mA h g(-1) after 600 cycles at 1000 mA g(-1)) as the anode material of Li-ion batteries.
Hierarchical 3D All-Carbon Composite Structure Modified with N-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots for High-Performance Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have shown enormous potential for portable electronic devices. Herein, hierarchical 3D all-carbon electrode materials are prepared by assembling N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) on carbonized MOF materials (cZIF-8) interweaved with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors. In this ternary electrode, cZIF-8 provides a large accessible surface area, CNTs act as the electrical conductive network, and N-GQDs serve as highly pseudocapactive materials. Due to the synergistic effect and hierarchical assembly of these components, N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT electrodes exhibit a high specific capacitance of 540 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) in a 1 m H2SO4 electrolyte and excellent cycle stability with 90.9% capacity retention over 8000 cycles. The assembled supercapacitor possesses an energy density of 18.75 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 108.7 W kg(-1). Meanwhile, three supercapacitors connected in series can power light-emitting diodes for 20 min. All-solid-state N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT flexible supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 14 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 89.3 W kg(-1), while the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles reaches 82%. This work provides an effective way to construct novel electrode materials with high energy storage density as well as good cycling performance and power density for high-performance energy storage devices via the rational design.

Abstract:Carbon-based three-dimensional (3D) freestanding electrode materials typically possess weak mechanical properties such as brittleness, low stress, residual strain, and large energy dissipation during deformation processes. Here, we deposit high N-doped carbon layers derived from melamine-formaldehyde resin in carbon nanotube (CNT) sponge networks, which can not only form the core–shell structure but also knot the network skeletons by binding interconnected CNTs, thus strengthening the 3D structures. The CNT sponges with high N-doped carbon layers have significantly enhanced mechanical properties including high elasticity, compressive stress, and Young’s modulus. Meanwhile, composite sponges as lithium-ion capacitor (LIC) anodes can achieve a high specific capacity of 303 mAh/g, high rate capability, and long cyclic performance. The corresponding LIC cells with amorphous carbon cathodes can deliver a high energy density of 153 Wh/kg at 582 W/kg and 49 Wh/kg even at a high power density of 29.1 kW/kg. We provide a method to enhance 3D network structures, which have applications in freestanding electrode materials for flexible energy storage systems and microelectromechanical systems.

Abstract:Carbon materials are among the most important materials used for anodes in rechargeable batteries due to their extensive resources and good cycling stability. However, the electrochemical performance of carbon-based anodes is closely related with their electronic states and morphologies/microstructures. Herein, we present a simple approach to synthesize a nitrogen-doped 3D nanocarbon (N-Carbon) with nanopore defects as high-capacity and stable anodes for sodium/lithium-ion batteries. This carbon material well inherits the unique nanosheet-like morphology of the template, which is composed of twisted-interconnected cuboidal hollow nanocages with a large number of nanopores across the shells. N-Carbon with integration of N heteroatom and 3D porous structure exhibits high reversible capacities of sodium-ion batteries, up to 401.9 and 311.7 mAh g−1 at 0.1 and 0.5 A g−1 after 100 cycles, respectively. This unique carbon material simultaneously exhibits excellent rate capability and cycling stability, with reversible capacities of 199.7 and 97.9 mAh g−1 at large current densities of 1 and 5 A g−1 even after 10,000 cycles, respectively. Moreover, N-Carbon also exhibits high capacity of 709 mAh g−1 for lithium-ion batteries after 2500 cycles at 10 A g−1. The excellent reversibility, rate capability, and cycling stability are attributed to this unique N-Carbon integrating into rich nitrogen-doped induced ion-storage sites and its relative ordered 3D pore structure.

Abstract:Superior electrochemical activity with adequate electronic properties by the incorporation of nitrogen doping in carbon anode materials presents a promising prospect for the advancement of rechargeable batteries. However, the structure of two-dimensional (2D) nitrogen-rich carbon still limits the practical achievement of this concept. In order to overcome this issue, a “bottom-to-up” strategy is being presented which involved the development of highly nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NDCSs) using a Cu-melamine coordination framework as a precursor. For the reinforcement of carbon framework during carbonization by utilizing the surface curing agent of hexamethylenetetramine, Cu2+ melamine coordinated with melamine molecule in order to build a 2D structure. Precise control of carbonizing temperature delivers command over lamellar thickness, crystallinity, nitrogen configuration and content (8.05–29.49 at.%). Consequently, the optimized sample brings considerable capacities of 871.1 and 258.8 mAh g − 1 at 0.05 A g − 1 for Li+ and Na+ storage, respectively, as well as high-rate performance (299.6 and 66.7 mAh g − 1 at 10 A g − 1) is achieved. This work will open a new pathway for the successful manufacturing of nitrogen-rich carbon nanosheets for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbon nanomaterials have shown a great application potential in energy storage and conversion fields due to their outstanding conductivity, tunable pore structure, and good chemical stability. Nevertheless, how to accurately control the pore structure, especially directly assembling the mesoporous carbon onto different substrates remains a big challenge. Herein, we have successfully assembled two kinds of highly nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon onto carbon nanotubes (NMC/CNTs) based on a facile cooperative assembly process assisted by triblock PEO 20 PPO 70 PEO 20 (P123) and PEO 106 PPO 70 PEO 106 (F127) copolymers. The experimental results indicate that the P123/F127 mass ratio has a profound effect on the pore structure, leading to the formation of NMC/CNTs composites with spherical pore structure (S-NMC/CNTs) and cylindrical pore structure (C-NMC/CNTs). In virtue of fast electron/ion transfer kinetics, the as-prepared S-NMC/CNTs anode demonstrates an excellent electrochemical performance for lithium-ion batteries, and it delivers a high reversible capacity of 588.1 mAh·g −1 at the current of 0.1 A·g −1 after 100 cycles, along with a superior cycling stability. Specifically noted, the controlled assembly route developed in our work can also be applied to other support materials with different structures and compositions.

Abstract:Construction of three-dimensional (3D) conductive interconnected network architecture is an effective strategy to improve the performance of lithium-ion storage capability. Currently, the main challenges faced by silicon (Si) electrodes are volume change and low intrinsic electrical conductivity since the former will lead to severe particle pulverization and the latter will result in poor cycle performance. Herein, a 3D multilayer composite material featuring interconnected network structure was designed using electrospinning technique and low temperature heat treatment method. The unique structure was alternately composed of Si-encapsulated conjugated carbon nanofibers and graphene oxide (GO) layers. The conjugated carbon nanofibers network formed by polyacrylonitrile can not only shorten the ion transport path, but also alleviate volume expansion of Si during lithium ion insertion/extraction due to its well-maintained polymer elasticity. The addition of GO in the multilayer of carbon nanofibers network effectively enhanced the conductivity of the whole electrode, and greatly reduced the direct contact between Si and electrolyte. As a result, the binderless and free-standing Si-based composite electrode with maintained structural integrity effectively improved the capacity and initial Coulombic efficiency of Si anode. The composite electrode was prepared through a facile and high-yield process, showing potential commercial application value.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon has sufficient specific surface area and anchor positioning points. The pore structure facilitates uniform charge distribution, and buffers volume changes during stripping. However, single carbon materials have limited theoretical capacity and short cycle life. Here, 3D porous carbon material BCN/Mn-6 (B,N and Mn co-doped porous carbon with 6 mmol Mn content) co-doped with manganese, boron and nitrogen was synthesized by heat treatment. Affective modulation of the material structure and surface functional groups was achieved by adjusting the amount of manganese doping. The metal element doping can promote the diffusion of lithium ions, and the formed vacancies and defects can be used as lithium storage sites. Nitrogen doping can improve the dispersion and stability of metals and oxides, and regulate the redox capacity. Co-doping of metals and heteroatoms synergistically improves electrical conductivity. Thus, BCN/Mn-6 exhibits excellent cycling stability (99.60% Coulombic efficiency after 300 cycles) and specific capacity (779.9 mAh/g), and shows capacity rise. This study provides a new direction for the preparation of carbon-based electrode materials doped with heteroatoms and the study of capacitive energy storage mechanisms.

Abstract:We report a new solution deposition method to synthesize an unprecedented type of two-dimensional ordered mesoporous carbon nanosheets via a controlled low-concentration monomicelle close-packing assembly approach. These obtained carbon nanosheets possess only one layer of ordered mesopores on the surface of a substrate, typically the inner walls of anodic aluminum oxide pore channels, and can be further converted into mesoporous graphene nanosheets by carbonization. The atomically flat graphene layers with mesopores provide high surface area for lithium ion adsorption and intercalation, while the ordered mesopores perpendicular to the graphene layer enable efficient ion transport as well as volume expansion flexibility, thus representing a unique orthogonal architecture for excellent lithium ion storage capacity and cycling performance. Lithium ion battery anodes made of the mesoporous graphene nanosheets have exhibited an excellent reversible capacity of 1040 mAh/g at 100 mA/g, and they can retain at 833 mAh/g even after numerous cycles at varied current densities. Even at a large current density of 5 A/g, the reversible capacity is retained around 255 mAh/g, larger than for most other porous carbon-based anodes previously reported, suggesting a remarkably promising candidate for energy storage.

Abstract:Freestanding composite structures with embedded transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) as the active material are highly attractive in the development of advanced electrodes for energy storage devices. Most 3D electrodes consist of a bilayer design involving a core-shell combination. To further enhance the gravimetric and areal capacities, a 3D trilayer design is proposed that has MoSe2 as the TMDC sandwiched in-between an inner carbon nanotube (CNT) core and an outer carbon layer to form a CNT/MoSe2/C framework. The CNT core creates interconnected pathways for the e(-)/Na+ conduction, while the conductive inert carbon layer not only protects the corrosive environment between the electrolyte and MoSe2 but also is fully tunable for an optimized Na+ storage. This unique heterostructure is synthesized via a solvothermal-carbonization approach. Due to annealing under a confined structural configuration, MoSe2 interlayer spaces are expanded to facilitate a faster Na+ diffusion. It is shown that an approximate to 3 nm thick carbon layer yielded an optimized anode for a sodium-ion battery. The 3D porosity of the heterostructure remains intact after an intense densification process to produce a high areal capacity of 4.0 mAh cm(-2) and a high mass loading of 13.9 mg cm(-2) with a gravimetric capacity of 347 mAh g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1) after 500 cycles.
3D Carbon Nanotube Network Bridged Hetero‐Structured Ni‐Fe‐S Nanocubes toward High‐Performance Lithium, Sodium, and Potassium Storage

Abstract:Lithium‐ion, sodium‐ion, and potassium‐ion batteries have captured tremendous attention in power supplies for various electric vehicles and portable electronic devices. However, their practical applications are severely limited by factors such as poor rate capability, fast capacity decay, sluggish charge storage dynamics, and low reversibility. Herein, hetero‐structured bimetallic sulfide (NiS/FeS) encapsulated in N‐doped porous carbon cubes interconnected with CNTs (Ni‐Fe‐S‐CNT) are prepared through a convenient co‐precipitation and post‐heat treatment sulfurization technique of the corresponding Prussian‐blue analogue nanocage precursor. This special 3D hierarchical structure can offer a stable interconnect and conductive network and shorten the diffusion path of ions, thereby greatly enhancing the mobility efficiency of alkali (Li, Na, K) ions in electrode materials. The Ni‐Fe‐S‐CNT nanocomposite maintains a charge capacity of 1535 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 for lithium ion batteries, 431 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 for sodium ion batteries, and 181 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 for potassium‐ion batteries, respectively. The high performance is mainly attributed to the 3D hierarchically high‐conductivity network architecture, in which the hetero‐structured FeS/NiS nanocubes provide fast Li+/Na+/K+ insertion/extraction and reduced ion diffusion paths, and the distinctive 3D networks maintain the electrical contact and guarantee the structural integrity.

Nitrogen‐Doped Porous Carbon Nanosheets with Ultrahigh Capacity and Quasicapacitive Energy Storage Performance for Lithium and Sodium Storage Applications

Abstract:One of the great challenges in the development of rechargeable batteries is developing electrode materials with high capacities and good rate performance. Herein, thin carbon nanosheets with hierarchical porous structure and high nitrogen content (10.6 at%) were elaborately designed and fabricated from phenolic resin through a two-step method including N2 carbonization and NH3 annealing. The as-obtained nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets (NPCNs) exhibit abundant electroactive sites from large surface area and nitrogen species for lithium/sodium storage, and short diffusion channels from unique porous 2D structure for rapid charge transfer. As a result, the optimal NPCNs show outstanding lithium storage capacities of 2065 and 300 mAh g-1 at current densities of 0.05 and 200 A g-1, respectively, as well as good cycle stability. Moreover, the NPCNs also perform excellent sodium storage performance of 222 and 134 mAh g-1 at 1 and 10 A g-1, respectively. Further electrochemical analysis demonstrates that the superior rate capability of NPCNs might attribute to the surface-dominated energy storage process. Assembling Carbon Pores into Carbon Sheets: Rational Design of Three-Dimensional Carbon Networks for a Lithium Sulfur Battery

Abstract:The conversion reaction-based lithium-sulfur battery features an attractive energy density of 2600 W h/kg. Nevertheless, the unsatisfied performance in terms of poor discharge capacity and cycling stability still hinders its practical applications. Recently, porous carbon materials have been widely reported as promising sulfur reservoirs to promote the sluggish reaction kinetics of sulfur conversion, tolerate volume expansion of sulfur, and suppress polysulfide shuttling. However, porous carbon with a simply designed nanostructure is hard to satisfy all of these aspects simultaneously. Herein, we have applied a dual-template strategy that assembles carbon pores into carbon sheets to prepare three-dimensional (3D) nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets (N-PCSs) as the multifunctional sulfur host for the Li-S battery. By arranging carbon pores within an interconnected 3D architecture, the porous carbon sheets enable rapid electron/ion transfer. Moreover, the micro/mesopores and nitrogen dopant in N-PCS provide both physical and chemical restrictions to polysulfide species. With these advances, the N-PCS/S cathode delivers a large initial discharge capacity of 1360 mA h/g at 0.1 C. When performed at 0.5 C for 1000 cycles, the cathode can still remain ∼50% of its capacity with a low decay rate of 0.05% per cycle, showing the important role of the 3D carbon material in the Li-S battery.

Abstract:A wide range of supercritical fluids (SCFs) have been studied as solvents for electrochemistry with carbon dioxide and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) being the most extensively studied. Recent advances have shown that it is possible to get well-resolved voltammetry in SCFs by suitable choice of the conditions and the electrolyte. In this review, we discuss the voltammetry obtained in these systems, studies of the double-layer capacitance, work on the electrodeposition of metals into high aspect ratio nanopores and the use of metallocenes as redox probes and standards in both supercritical carbon dioxide–acetonitrile and supercritical HFCs.

Abstract:Five modifications of a cricoarytenoid lateralization and two modifications of a thyroarytenoid lateralization laryngoplasty technique were evaluated for their effect on rima glottidis area. All procedures and evaluations were performed on canine cadaver larynges. Cricoarytenoid lateralization (CAL) techniques provided a greater increase of the size of the glottic opening than did any of the thyroarytenoid lateralization techniques. Cricoarytenoid and interarytenoid disarticulation associated with CAL did not significantly increase glottic size compared with normal. After disarticulation of the cricoarytenoid joint, there was no difference in glottic enlargement whether the suture was placed through the muscular process or through the articular facet of the arytenoid cartilage. Transection of the sesamoid band combined with cricoarytenoid diarticulation distorted the dorsal margin of the rima glottidis.
Hierarchical design of nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanorods for use in high efficiency capacitive energy storage

Abstract:We report a novel synthesis route for creating 3D interconnected hierarchical porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanorods (3D-IPCRs) using 1D polyaniline nanorods as a precursor and SiO2 as a porogen. The 1D carbon nanorod/SiO2 composites initially formed during carbonization further act as raw materials for a KOH activation process. After subsequent removal of the templates, as-prepared 3D-IPCRs exhibit a high specific surface area (1765 m(2) g(-1)), a large total pore volume (1.06 cm(3) g(-1)), an interconnected porous structure, and a moderate nitrogen doping (2.63 wt%). This interconnectivity is beneficial to improving ion diffusion properties and electrolyte wettability. The resulting carbon exhibits a much lower impedance resistance and smaller contact angle, compared with conventional mesoporous carbon, and thus has better electric double layer performance. As obtained 3D-IPCR electrodes achieve a high specific capacitance of 302 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.05 A g(-1) in 6 M KOH (two-electrode system), high coulombic efficiency (99.8%) and excellent cycling stability (92.8% of capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles) even with a high mass loading (11 mg cm(-2)) and thick electrode film (300 mm). Furthermore, the energy density of 3D-IPCRs reaches 23 W h kg(-1), and the power density can be as high as 18.2 kW kg(-1) when the energy density remains at 9.11 W h kg(-1) in an organic electrolyte.

Abstract:DNA hypermethylation in gene promoters is an epigenetic mechanism regulating gene expression in cellular immortalization, an important step in carcinogenesis. Previously, we studied the genes dysregulated during immortalization using spontaneously immortalized fibroblasts from patients with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), who carry a germline mutation in the tumor suppressor gene p53. We found that multiple interferon (IFN) signaling pathway genes were regulated by epigenetic silencing. In this study we focused on a key regulator of that pathway, the signal transducer and transcription activator 1 (Stat1) gene. Although Stat1 is downregulated after cellular immortalization and upregulated in immortal MDAH041 cells after 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC) treatment, we detected no methylation of the Stat1 promoter region in these cells before or after immortalization. To analyze the function of Stat1 in immortalization, we expressed Stat1 in immortal MDAH041 cells by stable infection, expecting to induce IFN-regulated genes or cellular senescence or both. However, the overexpression of Stat1 alone was not sufficient to repress the proliferation rate of immortal MDAH041 cells or induce senescence in immortal MDAH041 cells. We concluded that factor(s) additional to Stat1 (whether IFN dependent or not) are required for the immortalization of LFS fibroblasts.
