Abstract:Environmental energy harvesting technologies have provided potential for battery-powered wireless sensor networks to have perpetual network operations. To design a robust network that can adapt to not only temporal but also spatial variations of ambient energy sources, in this paper, we utilize mobility to circumvent communication bottlenecks, by employing a mobile data collector, called SenCar. We propose a two-stage approach for mobile data collection. In the first stage, SenCar makes stops at a subset of selected sensor locations to collect data packets in a multi-hop fashion. We provide a selection algorithm to search for sensor locations with most residual energy while guaranteeing a bounded tour length. Then we design a distributed data gathering algorithm to achieve maximum network utility by adjusting data rates, link scheduling and flow routing that adapts to spatial temporal environmental energy variations. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms are validated by extensive numerical results.

Abstract:Energy supply remains to be a major bottleneck in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). A self-sustainable network operates without battery replacement. Recent efforts employ multi-source energy harvesting to power sensors with ambient energy. Meanwhile, wireless charging is considered in WSNs as a reliable energy source. It motivates us to integrate both fields of research to build a self-sustainable network and guarantee operation under any weather condition. We propose a three-step solution to optimize this new framework. We first solve the Sensor Composition Problem (SCP) to derive the percentage of different types of sensors. Then we enable self-sustainability by bringing energy harvesting storage to the field for charging the Mobile Charger (MC). Next, we propose a 3-factor approximation algorithm to schedule sensor charging and energy replenishment of MC. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate significant improvement of network lifetime and reduction of network cost. The network lifetime can be extended at least three times compared with traditional approaches and the charging capability of MC increases at least 100%.

Abstract:Traditional battery-powered wireless sensor networks face many challenges to meet the requirements of a wide range of demanding applications nowadays due to their limited energy. Although energy harvesting techniques can scavenge energy from the environment to sustain network operations, dynamics from the energy sources may lead to service interruption or performance degradation when the sources are unavailable. Recent advances in wireless energy transfer have opened up a new dimension to resolve the network lifetime problem. In this paper, we present an overview of the wireless energy transfer techniques and recent developments to apply these techniques in various sensing applications. We also show how this novel technology can be integrated with classic data collection applications and envision future directions in this area.

Abstract:Recent advances in environmental energy harvesting technologies have provided great potentials for traditional battery powered sensor networks to achieve perpetual operations. Due to dynamics from the temporal profiles of ambient energy sources, most of the studies so far have focused on designing and optimizing energy management schemes on single sensor node, but overlooked the impact of spatial variations of energy distribution when sensors work together at different locations. To design a robust sensor network, in this paper, we use mobility to circumvent communication bottlenecks caused by spatial energy variations. We employ a mobile collector, called SenCar, to collect data from designated sensors and balance energy consumptions in the network. To show spatial-temporal energy variations, we first conduct a case study in a solar-powered network and analyze possible impact on network performance. Next, we present a two-step approach for mobile data collection. First, we adaptively select a subset of sensor locations where the SenCar stops to collect data packets in a multi-hop fashion. We develop an adaptive algorithm to search for nodes based on their energy and guarantee data collection tour length is bounded. Second, we focus on designing distributed algorithms to achieve maximum network utility by adjusting data rates, link scheduling, and flow routing that adapts to the spatial-temporal environmental energy fluctuations. Finally, our numerical results indicate the distributed algorithms can converge to optimality very fast and validate its convergence in case of node failure. We also show advantages of our framework such as it can adapt to spatial-temporal energy variations and demonstrate its superiority compared to the network with static data sink.

Abstract:Recently, energy harvesting technology has been introduced into wireless sensor networks to solve the traditional battery-powered energy bottleneck problem. However, due to battery capacity limitation, the harvested energy would overflow while the nodes are in the energy saturation status. Aiming at this, we consider topology control approach in the EHWSNs that. allows each node to adaptively adjust its transmission power level to utilize the harvested energy efficiently. Specifically, we first model nodes' behaviors as an ordinal potential game where the high harvesting power nodes interact with the low harvesting power nodes to collaboratively maintain the whole network's connectivity. And we theoretically prove the existence of Nash equilibrium in this game. Then, a polynomial-time algorithm has been proposed to achieve Nash equilibrium. Simulation results show that our algorithm exploits the available energy resources in an efficient way and outperforms existing energy-aware algorithm in terms of energy conservation and equilibrium distribution.

Abstract:With the development of Marine Internet of Things, underwater acoustic sensor network (UASN) has become a research focus. However, the energy of UASN nodes is limited, and the complex underwater environment is easy to cause the failure of UASN nodes, which will affect the normal operation of UASN. To address this issue, in this paper, an UASN energy-efficient and fault-tolerant topology is generated to prolong the node lifetime and improve the fault tolerance for node failure. Initially, the learning automaton is introduced and improved to optimize the transmission power of each node. Based on the optimized power of nodes, the node lifetime considering node load is analyzed. Then the preferential growth mechanism is improved to present the energy-efficient and fault-tolerant topology evolution algorithm. Consequently, the energy-efficient and fault-tolerant UASN topology is generated. In the simulation experiments, the selection criteria of parameters about transmission power and node load under different actual requirements is obtained, and the performance of generated topology is validated. Simulation results show that the fault tolerance and energy efficiency of generated topology in this paper outperforms the TCEB and PG-OSTCG topologies.

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks, energy conserving techniques are crucial to achieve satisfying network lifetime. One effective way to significantly reduce the energy consumption of sensors is using topology management mechanism, which periodically selects some nodes to build up the forwarding backbone and allow the others to sleep (turn off the radios) for energy conservation. In this paper, we propose Backbone Energy Efficient Sleeping (BEES) management scheme, which has two attractive characteristics: (i) the backbone size is scalable with practical requirements; (ii) the backbone nodes are evenly distributed, which implies that the backbone itself is energy efficient for routing tasks. Simulation experiments evaluate the performance of BEES by comparing it with two existing topology management schemes. The results demonstrate the advantages of BEES over the existing algorithms. © 2007 IEEE.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks have attracted much attention because of many applications in the fields of industry, military, medicine, agriculture, and education. In addition, the vast majority of researches has been done to expand its applications and improve its efficiency. However, there are still many challenges for increasing the efficiency in different parts of this network. One of the most important parts is to improve the network lifetime in the wireless sensor network. Since the sensor nodes are generally powered by batteries, the most important issue to consider in these types of networks is to reduce the power consumption of the nodes in such a way as to increase the network lifetime to an acceptable level. The contribution of this paper is using topology control, the threshold for the remaining energy in nodes, and two of the meta-algorithms include SA (Simulated annealing) and VNS (Variable Neighbourhood Search) to increase the energy remaining in the sensors. Moreover, using a low-cost spanning tree, an appropriate connectivity control among nodes is created in the network in order to increase the network lifetime. The results of simulations show that the proposed method improves the sensor lifetime and reduces the energy consumed.

Abstract:One of the major constraints impacting the performance of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is the limited energy replenishment since sensor nodes are generally powered by battery. There have been some ways to alleviate the negative impact of the energy-limitation constraint in WSNs, primarily including designing energy-efficient protocols, replacing battery regularly, and harvesting energy from natural sources. Energy-efficient protocols can save energy and improve the energy efficiency so as to prolong the network lifetime to some extent, but its inherent mechanism determines itself unable to change the fact the energy is limited. Regular battery replacement can supply sensor node continuous energy, qualitatively but frequent battery replacement loses the main advantages of WSNs especially in some applications, where senor node may not be easily accessible because of the deployed or the large scale of such networks. This chapter is going to address the third way: energy-harvesting technique. We firstly survey several existing energy-harvesting modules suitable for sensor node, and then their main features are refined and compared. An example of the harvesting module design is given to look into the structure, function, and operation principle of this kind of modules. Once WSNs can harvest energy continually from variant environments, the operation of WSNs shifts from the traditional mode to a quite different and new one, in which energy is not limited and networks may operate permanently. Because of this shift, many new issues occur in the energy management of energy-harvesting WSNs. This chapter will introduce some previous works on the energy management under this new mode, including energy-neutral operation, duty cycling, and so on. We further will discuss the duty cycling in energy-harvesting sensor networks and present a scheme to schedule sensor nodes activation in the application: target monitoring. All the introduction of this chapter will be concluded in Sec. 6 and some possible topics will also be discussed for future research.
An Efficient Topology Maintenance Algorithm Based on Shortest Path Tree for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:The topology of a wireless sensor network has a significant effect on the network performance. Although topology control algorithms can optimize the network topology, the resultant topology is usually changeable. In this paper, we focus on how to maintain the network connectivity while reducing the maintenance overhead as some nodes fail. A distributed topology maintenance algorithm based on the shortest path tree is proposed. In this algorithm, nodes in immediate surroundings of a faulty node are first triggered to respond, and if they couldn’t ensure that the network is connected, the other related nodes are further triggered. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can efficiently maintain the network connectivity with significant reduction in the overhead for topology maintenance.

Abstract:Topology control is one of the most important energy-saving techniques used in wireless sensor networks. It has evolved into two dominant research directions: power control and sleep scheduling. Although many topology control algorithms and protocols are claimed to be highly energy-efficient, this is not necessarily the case in real systems due to various isolated considerations. In this paper, based on a simple and comprehensive analysis of energy consumption, we propose three necessary principles for energy-efficient topology control for wireless sensor networks. Topology control should (1) consider power control and sleep scheduling jointly, (2) be aware of traffic load, and (3) be done in conjunction with routing. We wish this paper could contribute to the development of the research on topology control for wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are widely used in various fields such as military, industrial, and transportation for real-time monitoring, sensing, and data collection of different environments or objects. However, the development of WSNs is hindered by several limitations, including energy, storage space, computing power, and data transmission rate. Among these, the availability of power energy plays a crucial role as it directly determines the lifespan of WSN. To extend the life cycle of WSN, two key approaches are power supply improvement and energy conservation. Therefore, we propose an energy harvesting system and a low-energy-consumption mechanism for WSNs. Firstly, we delved into the energy harvesting technology of WSNs, explored the utilization of solar energy and mechanical vibration energy to ensure a continuous and dependable power supply to the sensor nodes, and analyzed the voltage output characteristics of bistable piezoelectric cantilever. Secondly, we proposed a neighbor discovery mechanism that utilizes a separation beacon, is based on reply to ACK, and can facilitate the identification of neighboring nodes. This mechanism operates at a certain duty cycle ratio, significantly reduces idle listening time and results in substantial energy savings. In comparison to the Disco and U-connect protocols, our proposed mechanism achieved a remarkable reduction of 66.67% and 75% in the worst discovery delay, respectively. Furthermore, we introduced a data fusion mechanism based on integer wavelet transform. This mechanism effectively eliminates data redundancy caused by spatiotemporal correlation, resulting in a data compression rate of 5.42. Additionally, it significantly reduces energy consumption associated with data transmission by the nodes.

Abstract:A local-area and energy-efficient (LAEE) evolution model for wireless sensor networks is proposed. The process of topology evolution is divided into two phases. In the first phase, nodes are distributed randomly in a fixed region. In the second phase, according to the spatial structure of wireless sensor networks, topology evolution starts from a network of very small size which contains the sink, grows with an energy-efficient preferential attachment rule in the new node's local-area, and stops until all nodes are connected into network. Both analysis and simulation results show that the degree distribution of LAEE follows the power law. The comparison shows that this topology construction model has better tolerance against energy depletion or random failure than other nonscale-free WSN topologies.

Abstract:Energy provisioning plays a key role in the sustainable operations of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Recent efforts deploy multi-source energy harvesting sensors to utilize ambient energy. Meanwhile, wireless charging is a reliable energy source not affected by spatial-temporal ambient dynamics. This article integrates multiple energy provisioning strategies and adaptive adjustment to accomplish self-sustainability under complex weather conditions. We design and optimize a three-tier framework with the first two tiers focusing on the planning problems of sensors with various types and distributed energy storage powered by environmental energy. Then we schedule the Mobile Chargers (MC) between different charging activities and propose an efficient, 4-factor approximation algorithm. Finally, we adaptively adjust the algorithms to capture real-time energy profiles and jointly optimize those correlated modules. Our extensive simulations demonstrate significant improvement of network lifetime ( ), increase of harvested energy (15%), reduction of network cost (30%), and the charging capability of MC by 100%.

An Energy Balanced Dynamic Topology Control Algorithm for Improved Network Lifetime

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks, a few sensor nodes end up being vulnerable to potentially rapid depletion of the battery reserves due to either their central location or just the traffic patterns generated by the application. Traditional energy management strategies, such as those which use topology control algorithms, reduce the energy consumed at each node to the minimum necessary. In this paper, we use a different approach that balances the energy consumption at each of the nodes, thus increasing the functional lifetime of the network. We propose a new distributed dynamic topology control algorithm called Energy Balanced Topology Control (EBTC) which considers the actual energy consumed for each transmission and reception to achieve the goal of an increased functional lifetime. We analyze the algorithm's computational and communication complexity and show that it is equivalent or lower in complexity to other dynamic topology control algorithms. Using an empirical model of energy consumption, we show that the EBTC algorithm increases the lifetime of a wireless sensor network by over 40% compared to the best of previously known algorithms.

Abstract:Recent advances in micro-sensor and communication technology have enabled the emergence of a new technology, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). WSN have emerging recently as a key solution to monitor remote or hostile environments and concern a wide range of applications. These networks are faced with many challenges such as energy efficiency usage, topology maintenance, network lifetime maximization, etc. Experience shows that sensing and communications tasks consume energy, therefore judicious power management can effectively extend network lifetime. Moreover, the low cost of sensor devices will allows deployment of huge number nodes that can permit a high redundancy degree. In this paper, we focus on the problem of energy efficiency and topology maintenance in a densely deployed network context. Hence we propose an energy aware sleep scheduling and rapid topology healing scheme for long life wireless sensor networks. Our scheme is a strong node scheduling based mechanism for lifetime maximization in wireless sensor networks and has a fast maintenance method to cover nodes failure. Our sentinel scheme is based on a probabilistic model which provides a distributed sleep scheduling and topology control algorithm. Simulations and experimental results are presented to verify our approach and the performance of our mechanism.

Abstract:It is expected that in the near future wireless sensor network (WSNs) will be more widely used in the mobile environment, in applications such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) for marine monitoring and mobile robots for environmental investigation. The sensor nodes' mobility can easily cause changes to the structure of a network topology, and lead to the decline in the amount of transmitted data, excessive energy consumption, and lack of security. To solve these problems, a kind of efficient Topology Control algorithm for node Mobility (TCM) is proposed. In the topology construction stage, an efficient clustering algorithm is adopted, which supports sensor node movement. It can ensure the balance of clustering, and reduce the energy consumption. In the topology maintenance stage, the digital signature authentication based on Error Correction Code (ECC) and the communication mechanism of soft handover are adopted. After verifying the legal identity of the mobile nodes, secure communications can be established, and this can increase the amount of data transmitted. Compared to some existing schemes, the proposed scheme has significant advantages regarding network topology stability, amounts of data transferred, lifetime and safety performance of the network.

Abstract:Nodes in the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are prone to failure due to energy depletion and poor environment, which could have a negative impact on the normal operation of the network. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, we build a fault-tolerant topology which can effectively tolerate energy depletion and random failure. Firstly, a comprehensive failure model about energy depletion and random failure is established. Then an improved evolution model is presented to generate a fault-tolerant topology, and the degree distribution of the topology can be adjusted. Finally, the relation between the degree distribution and the topological fault tolerance is analyzed, and the optimal value of evolution model parameter is obtained. Then the target fault-tolerant topology which can effectively tolerate energy depletion and random failure is obtained. The performances of the new fault tolerant topology are verified by simulation experiments. The results show that the new fault tolerant topology effectively prolongs the network lifetime and has strong fault tolerance.

Abstract:Energy consumption remains as a major obstacle for full deployment and exploitation of wireless sensor network (WSN) technology nowadays. This paper presents the design and implementation of an energy-aware sensor node, which can help in constructing energy-efficient WSNs. An energy-efficient strategy, which aims at minimizing energy consumption from both the sensor node level and the network level in a WSN, is proposed. To minimize the communication energy consumption of the sensor node, the distance between the transmitter and the receiver is estimated before available transmission, and then, the lowest transmission power needed to transmit the measurement data is calculated and determined. The sensor nodes are also set to sleep mode between two consecutive measurements for energy saving in normal operating conditions. Furthermore, energy saving can be achieved by estimating the energy consumption within the whole network under different network configurations and then by choosing the most energy-efficient one.
