Abstract:The rise of electric vehicles (EVs) has highlighted the issue of insufficient charging infrastructure, a major barrier to their widespread adoption. This problem is due to the limited capacity of existing charging networks and the performance constraints of EV batteries. Intelligent route planning, which optimizes travel time and energy use, could be a solution. Traditional studies on electric vehicle route planning oversimplify the charging process, assuming a linear relationship between charging level and time, neglecting its actual nonlinear nature. Additionally, these studies underestimate the impact of dynamically changing traffic conditions and charging station queue times on travel time. Integrating these factors into route planning can significantly reduce energy consumption and travel time. Our work proposes an intelligent partial charging strategy, relaxing full recharging restrictions, and fully considering the nonlinear battery characteristics, dynamic traffic conditions, and charging station queue times. Employing an improved genetic algorithm for route planning, our method demonstrates a dual advantage – reducing computational complexity and saving an average of 15% in travel time. Experimental results over a 400 km 2 traffic road network validate the efficiency of our approach, outperforming existing methods facing similar challenges.

Abstract:Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are gaining popularity due to their economic efficiency as well as their contribution to green management. PHEVs allow the driver to use electric power exclusively for driving and then switch to gasoline as needed. The more gasoline a vehicle uses, the higher cost is required for the trip. However, a PHEV cannot last for a long period on stored electricity without being recharged. Thus, it needs frequent recharging compared to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. Moreover, the battery recharging time is usually long, which leads to longer delays on a trip. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a flexible navigation management scheme along with an efficient recharging schedule, which allows the driver to choose an optimal route based on the fuel-cost and time-to-destination constraints. In this paper, we present a formal model to solve this PHEV navigation management problem. The model is solved to provide a driver with a comprehensive routing plan including the potential recharging and refueling points that satisfy the given requirements, particularly the maximum fuel cost and the maximum trip time. In addition, we propose a price-based navigation control technique to achieve better load balance for the traffic system. Evaluation results show that the proposed formal models can be solved efficiently even with large road networks.

Abstract:Eco-routing aims to find routes that minimize vehicles' energy consumption, as an alternative to minimum-time or minimum-distance routes. This paper develops a new data-driven energy consumption model for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and proposes an algorithm that determines both the optimal path and powertrain strategy. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model and algorithm, we develop and calibrate a simulation model of the Ann Arbor city in SUMO, and implement the eco-routing algorithm with connected and automated vehicles in simulations. The result shows that on average we can achieve an energy saving around 7%-14%, while incurring a slight increase in travel time.

Abstract:We study the problem of eco-routing for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) to minimize the overall energy consumption cost. We propose an algorithm which can simultaneously calculate an energy-optimal route (eco-route) for a PHEV and an optimal power-train control strategy over this route. In order to show the effectiveness of our method in practice, we use a HERE Maps API to apply our algorithms based on traffic data in the city of Boston with more than 110,000 links. Moreover, we validate the performance of our eco-routing algorithm using speed profiles collected from a traffic simulator (SUMO) as input to a high-fidelity energy model to calculate energy consumption costs. Our results show significant energy savings (around 12%) for PHEVs with a near real-time execution time for the algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an electric vehicle routing problem while considering the constraints on battery life and battery swapping stations. We first introduce a comprehensive model consisting of speed, load and distance to measure the energy consumption and carbon emissions of electric vehicles. Second, we propose a mixed integer programming model to minimize the total costs related to electric vehicle energy consumption and travel time. To solve this model efficiently, we develop an adaptive genetic algorithm based on hill climbing optimization and neighborhood search. The crossover and mutation probabilities are designed to adaptively adjust with the change of population fitness. The hill climbing search is used to enhance the local search ability of the algorithm. In order to satisfy the constraints of battery life and battery swapping stations, the neighborhood search strategy is applied to obtain the final optimal feasible solution. Finally, we conduct numerical experiments to test the performance of the algorithm. Computational results illustrate that a routing arrangement that accounts for power consumption and travel time can reduce carbon emissions and total logistics delivery costs. Moreover, we demonstrate the effect of adaptive crossover and mutation probabilities on the optimal solution.

Abstract:As environmental awareness continues to grow and government policies provide incentives, electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more widely used in logistics distribution. Considering green power trading and carbon emissions, this paper addresses the green vehicle routing problem (GVRP) and constructs an electric vehicle path model with time windows to minimize the total cost. To solve the model, a hybrid adaptive genetic algorithm (HAGA) is proposed. An improved nearest-neighbor algorithm is adopted to improve the quality of the initial population, and the adaptive crossover and mutation operators are introduced to achieve the better solution. In addition, based on the Schneider case, HAGA is used to solve the models with and without considering green power trading separately, and the results show that considering green power trading can reduce the total cost by 3.22% and carbon emissions by 23.38 kg. Finally, the experimental simulations further prove that with the increase in case size, HAGA can effectively reduce total cost. And it is beneficial for the popularization of electric vehicles in logistics distribution.

Abstract:We study the problem of eco-routing Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) to minimize the overall energy consumption costs. Unlike the traditional Charge Depleting First (CDF) approaches in the literature where the power-train control strategy is fixed, we propose a Combined Routing and Power-train Control (CRPTC) algorithm which can simultaneously calculate the optimal energy route as well as the optimal power-train control strategy. To validate our method, we apply our eco-routing algorithm to a subnetwork of the Eastern Massachusetts (EMA) transportation network using actual traffic data provided by the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization. As an alternative benchmark, we also simulate the traffic behavior of the network using the extracted flow data from the aforementioned traffic dataset. We show that the CRPTC approach outperforms the traditional CDF approach and we quantify the trade-off between saving energy and time in using eco-routing algorithms.

Abstract:Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) are increasingly being seen as a means of mitigating the pressing concerns of traffic-related pollution. While hybrid vehicles are usually designed with the objective of minimizing fuel consumption, in this paper we propose a engine management strategies that also consider environmental effects of the vehicles to pedestrians outside of the vehicles. Specifically, we present the optimisation-based engine energy management strategies for PHEVs that attempt to minimize the environmental impact of pedestrians along the route of the vehicle, while taking account of route-dependent uncertainties. We implement the proposed approach in a real PHEV and evaluate the performance in a hardware-in-the-loop platform. A variety of simulation results are given to illustrate the efficacy of our proposed approach.

Abstract:High fuel consumption cost results in drivers' economic burden. Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) consume two fuel sources (i.e., gasoline and electricity energy sources) with floating prices. To reduce drivers' total fuel cost, recommending economical routes to them becomes one of the effective methods. In this paper, we present a novel economical path-planning framework called Eco-Route, which consists of two phases. In the first phase, we build a driving route cost model (DRCM) for each PHEV (and driver) under the energy management strategy, based on driving condition and vehicles' parameters. In the second phase, with the real-time traffic information collected via the mobile crowdsensing manner, we are able to estimate and compare the driving cost among the shortest and the fastest routes for a given PHEV, and then recommend the driver with the more economical one. We evaluate the two-phase framework using 8 different PHEVs simulated in Matlab/Simulink, and the real-world datasets consisting of the road network, POI and GPS trajectory data generated by 559 taxis in seven days in Beijing, China. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves good accuracy, with a mean cost error of less 8% when paths length is longer than 5 km. Moreover, users could save about 9% driving cost on average if driving along suggested routes in our case studies.

Abstract:With the increasing popularity of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the coordinated charging of PHEVs has become an important issue in power distribution systems. This paper employs a multi-objective optimization model for coordinated charging of PHEVs in the system, in which the problem of valley filling and total cost minimization are both investigated under the system's technical constraints. To this end, a hierarchical optimal algorithm combining the water-filling-based algorithm with the consensus-based method is proposed to solve the constrained optimization problem. Moreover, a moving horizon approach is adopted to deal with the case where PHEVs arrive and leave randomly. We show that the proposed algorithm not only enhances the stability of the power load but also achieves the global minimization of vehicle owners charging costs, and its implementation is convenient in the multi-level power distribution system integrating the physical power grid with a heterogeneous information network. Numerical simulations are presented to show the desirable performance of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Optimization design of energy management strategy (EMS) for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), which significantly affects the vehicle performance on fuel economy and pollutant emission, has always been a focal issue. Of various EMSs, rule-based strategies are dominant in practical appli-cations due to their relatively low computational burden, but to obtain the optimum control parameters precisely and efficiently remains an unsolved problem. In this paper, a novel combinatorial algorithm utilizing the historical data from remote monitoring platform is proposed for the EMS optimization of PHEV. Firstly, the historical driving data are processed, and then a table which records different conditions at different time is built for reflecting the future PHEV operation schedule. Based on the historical data, a combinatorial algorithm which combines the advantages of genetic algorithm (GA) with enhanced ant colony algorithm (EACA) is proposed to optimize the control parameters. The prin-ciple of algorithm transformation from GA to EACA is when the objective function value is smaller than the default value after five generations of changing continuously in GA optimization process, and then the control parameter combinations can be regarded as the pheromone for EACA. Results show that the combinatorial algorithm successfully overcomes the low solution precision by GA and the slow resolving speed by EACA. The energy consumption of PHEV on a specific bus route can be reduced greatly by the proposed method, and it can provide a theoretical guidance for practical applications. Abstract:The abundance of materials and the development of the economy have led to the flourishing of the logistics industry, but have also caused certain pollution. The research on GVRP (Green vehicle routing problem) for planning vehicle routes during transportation to reduce pollution is also increasingly developing. Further exploration is needed on how to integrate these research findings with real vehicles. This paper establishes an energy consumption model using real electric vehicles, fully considering the physical characteristics of each component of the vehicle. To avoid the distortion of energy consumption models affecting the results of route planning. The energy consumption model also incorporates the effects of vehicle start/stop, speed, distance, and load on energy consumption. In addition, a load first speed optimization algorithm was proposed, which selects the most suitable speed between every two delivery points while planning the route. In order to further reduce energy consumption while meeting the time window. Finally, an improved Adaptive Genetic Algorithm is used to solve for the most energy-efficient route. The experiment shows that the results of using this speed optimization algorithm are generally more energy-efficient than those without using this algorithm. The average energy consumption of constant speed delivery at different speeds is 17.16% higher than that after speed optimization. Provided a method that is closer to reality and easier for logistics companies to use. It also enriches the GVRP model.

Abstract:An increase in greenhouse gases emission from the transportation sector has led companies and the government to elevate and support the production of electric vehicles (EV). With recent developments in urbanization and e-commerce, transportation companies are replacing their conventional fleet with EVs to strengthen the efforts for sustainable and environment-friendly operations. However, deploying a fleet of EVs asks for efficient routing and recharging strategies to alleviate their limited range and mitigate the battery degradation rate. In this work, a fleet of electric vehicles is considered for transportation and logistic capabilities with limited battery capacity and scarce charging station availability. We introduce a min-max electric vehicle routing problem (MEVRP) where the maximum distance traveled by any EV is minimized while considering charging stations for recharging. We propose an efficient branch and cut framework and a three-phase hybrid heuristic algorithm that can efficiently solve a variety of instances. Extensive computational results and sensitivity analyses are performed to corroborate the efficiency of the proposed approach, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change

Abstract:Promoting Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs) is viewed as a promising strategy to mitigate the energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transportation sector. The actual fuel and electricity energy consumption of PHEVs has recently attracted increasing attention. Distance-based average electricity or fuel consumption is commonly adopted to evaluate the energy efficiency of a vehicle. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on the ratio of electric drive distance to fuel drive distance and did not consider the difference between the electricity generated from onboard engine and offboard grid charging. This study proposes a grid electric driving ratio (grid-EDR) based on the battery energy variation under real road operation conditions for a more accurate calculation of the PHEV electric distance ratio. The method is validated by the actual vehicle driving data of 49 PHEVs in Shanghai and compared with other methods. To evaluate its application, the fuel substitution was calculated using grid-EDR combined with the new European driving cycle fuel consumption calculation method. PHEVs with higher grid-EDRs demonstrate better fuel economy. More than half the PHEVs in this study saved 50–80% of their onboard fuel. By improving the charging frequency, such as constructing more charging infrastructure, grid-EDR can be increased to 0.88 to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.

Abstract:With the development of Electric Vehicle (EV) technology, the new generation of EVs combine the advantages of both Wireless Charging Technology (WCT) and Plug-in Charging Technology (PCT) to extend their transport distance. However, some difficulties are emerged in this hybrid charging strategy based EVs for Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). First, the availability of devices for PCT and WCT varies with time. EVs not only need to find the optimal routes but also to determine charging strategies according to the environment. Second, in such dynamic environment, the Pareto-optimal Solutions (POS) should be rapidly tracked and Decision Makers (DMs) should pick desired solutions quickly for implementation. To address these issues, in this work, we propose a framework to reuse knee points into the newly generated environment. Reusing knee points can provide high-quality knowledge to generate a better initial population and the knee points also bring convenience to DMs. In this work, we also introduce a benchmark of Hybrid Charging Strategy based Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem (HCS-DVRP). The obtained experimental results on this benchmark validates that our proposed design can achieve a promising optimization performance via reusing knee points.

Abstract:En-route charging navigation system is significant for electric vehicle (EV) owners to relieve the range anxiety. Considering the limited battery capacity of EVs, accurate battery energy consumption prediction is crucial for charging navigation in that it determines the maximum traveling distance. This article develops a comprehensive EV energy consumption prediction model and the impacts of the traffic flow on the motor efficiency and driving resistances have been thoroughly considered. Moreover, a stochastic traffic flow model is proposed to improve the energy consumption prediction precision, in which the related uncertainties, such as travel time, vehicle speed, etc., are captured. Then, a novel cost-effective en-route EV charging navigation problem is formulated as a two-stage stochastic optimization problem. In addition, the EV charging behavior and its interaction with the routing selection are characterized in the navigation problem. Finally, an improved Benders Algorithm is modified to obtain the global optimal solution of the proposed navigation model. The simulation verification is carried out in the actual road network of a certain city and the IEEE 33-node coupling system. Results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model and solution algorithm.

Abstract:The study of series–parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) has become a research hotspot in new energy vehicles. The global optimal Pareto solutions of energy management strategy (EMS) play a crucial role in the development of PHEVs. This paper presents a multi-objective global optimization algorithm for the EMS of PHEVs. The algorithm combines the Radau Pseudospectral Knotting Method (RPKM) and the Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA)-II to optimize both energy conservation and battery lifespan under the suburban driving conditions of the New European Driving Cycle. The driving conditions are divided into stages at evident mode switching points and the optimal objectives are computed using RPKM. The RPKM results serve as the fitness values in iteration through the NSGA-II method. The results of the algorithm applied to a PHEV simulation show a 26.74%–53.87% improvement in both objectives after 20 iterations compared to the solutions obtained using only RPKM. The proposed algorithm is evaluated against the weighting dynamic programming and is found to be close to the global optimality, with the added benefits of faster and more uniform solutions.

Abstract:Under the severe challenge of increasingly stringent emission regulations and constantly improving fuel economy requirements, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have attracted widespread attention in the auto industry as a practicable technical route of green vehicles. To address the considerations on energy consumption and emission performance simultaneously, a novel control algorithm design is proposed for the energy management system (EMS) of HEVs. First, energy consumption of the investigated P3 HEV powertrain is determined based on bench test data. Second, crucial performance indicators of NOx and particle emissions, prior to a catalytic converter, are also measured and processed as a prerequisite. A comprehensive objective function is established on the grounds of the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS) and corresponding simulation models are constructed in MATLAB/SIMULINK. Subsequently, the control algorithm is validated against the simulation results predicated on the Worldwide-Harmonized Light-Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).Integrated research contents include: (1) The searching process aimed at the optimal solution of the pre-established multi-parameter objective function is thoroughly investigated; (2) the impacts of weighting coefficients pertaining to two exhaust pollutants upon the specific configurations of the proposed control algorithm are discussed in detail; and (3) the comparison analysis of the simulation results obtained from ECMS and classical Dynamic Programming (DP), respectively, is performed.

Abstract:Transportation activities account for a significant fraction of the world's total energy consumption and emissions. In recent years, reducing a vehicle's energy consumption and emissions has become a research topic with ever-increasing interest, especially in the area of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Among a variety of ITS applications, environmentally-friendly navigation (or eco-routing), which aims at finding a minimal energy or minimal emissions route, has the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption and total emissions. Previous research on environmentally-friendly navigation mainly focuses on pre-trip eco-routing. However, this approach may not be optimal due to the highly dynamic evolution of traffic conditions. In contrast, carrying out dynamic en-route eco-navigation can potentially further improve environmental sustainability. This paper presents a methodology for dynamic en-route eco-navigation research, in which details for strategy design, implementation and evaluation are elaborated. Utilizing this methodology, a case study has been carried out using a well-evaluated mesoscopic energy consumption model applied to a Beijing's expressways network. Results demonstrate that the proposed dynamic en-route eco-navigation in this study is beneficial in improving environmental sustainability while not compromising mobility.

Abstract:Greenhouse gas emission in transport sector is a major problem with its harmful effects on environment and population. This paper proposes to devise green routing solution for Mobile Advertisement Vehicle (MAV). The objective of the problem is to minimize route cost and carbon emission under time dependent speed constraint. The problem is modelled with hierarchical optimization and is solved in stages. This paper also highlights the idling emission estimation and its impact on the total emission. The problem is solved using Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization (HPSO) and the minimum cost routes obtained are improved using local exchange operator to minimize emission. The model is tested on a case study of mobile advertisement vehicle which produces minimum emission routes.
