Abstract:Graphical congestion games provide powerful models for a wide range of scenarios where spatially distributed individuals share resources. Understanding when graphical congestion game dynamics converge to pure Nash equilibria yields important engineering insights into when spatially distributed individuals can reach a stable resource allocation. In this paper, we study the convergence dynamics of graphical congestion games where players can use multiple resources simultaneously. We show that when the players are free to use any subset of resources the game always converges to a pure Nash equilibrium in polynomial time via lazy best response updates. When the collection of sets of resources available to each player is a matroid, we show that pure Nash equilibria may not exist in the most general case. However, if the resources are homogenous, the game can converge to a Nash equilibrium in polynomial time.

Abstract:In crowdsourcing systems, job assignment is one of the fundamental concerns. Existing works address the job assignment problem solely from the perspective of the crowdsourcer, aiming at maximizing the utility or minimizing the cost for the crowdsourcer. In this paper, we take into consideration users' preferences towards different jobs, and propose a novel matching framework for job assignment in crowdsourcing systems. Assigning multiple users to the same job will improve its quality, however, the crowdsourcer has to guarantee that the total payment to these users is less than the budget of this job. As users ask for different payments due to heterogeneity in their quality levels, classic deferred acceptance algorithm cannot reach a stable job assignment. In this paper, we formulate the job assignment problem in crowdsourcing systems as a many-to-one matching with budget constraints. Then, we design an algorithm that produces a stable job assignment in spite of user heterogeneity. Simulation results show that the proposed job assignment algorithm yields a high average job quality with a low computational complexity.

Abstract:Crowdsourcing leverages the collective intelligence of the massive crowd workers to accomplish tasks in a cost-effective way. On a crowdsourcing platform, it is challenging to assign tasks to workers in an appropriate way due to heterogeneity in both tasks and workers. In this paper, we explore the problem of assigning workers with various skill levels to tasks with different quality requirements and budget constraints. We first formulate the task assignment as a many-to-one matching problem, in which multiple workers are assigned to a task, and the task can be successfully completed only if a minimum quality requirement can be satisfied within its limited budget. Different from traditional task assignment mechanisms which focus on utility maximization for the crowdsourcing platform, our proposed matching framework takes into consideration the preferences of individual crowdsourcers and workers towards each other. We design a novel algorithm that can generate a stable outcome for the many-to-one matching problem with lower and upper bounds (i.e., quality requirement and budget constraint), as well as heterogeneous worker skill levels. Through extensive simulations, we show that the proposed algorithm can greatly improve the success ratio of task accomplishment and worker happiness, when compared with existing algorithms.
An Algorithm for the Assignment Game Beyond Additive Valuations

Abstract:The assignment game, introduced by Shapley and Shubik (1971), is a classic model for two-sided matching markets between buyers and sellers. In the original assignment game, it is assumed that payments lead to transferable utility and that buyers have unit-demand valuations for the items being sold. Two important and mostly independent lines of work have studied more general settings with imperfectly transferable utility and gross substitutes valuations. Multiple efficient algorithms have been proposed for computing a competitive equilibrium, the standard solution concept in assignment games, in these two settings. Our main result is an efficient algorithm for computing competitive equilibria in a setting with both imperfectly transferable utility and gross substitutes valuations. Our algorithm combines augmenting path techniques from maximum matching and algorithms for matroid intersection. We also show that, in a mild generalization of our model, computing a competitive equilibrium is NP-hard.

Abstract:Assignment Problem (AP) was well studied in the past 50 years, and is of great value in operations research and engineering. The Hungarian Method is one of the effective algorithms for the assignment problem. Although the assignment problem is well studied and a variety of algorithms are proposed, the efficiencies of the algorithms are never completely compared in the literature. In this paper, we summarize the properties of the assignment problem, and then survey its research history, add two new algorithms to existing classification, and compare the performances of these two algorithms with that of the Hungarian Method. The computational results show that the Hungarian Method can solve larger balanced assignment problems in engineering and is more efficient than the two algorithms involved, and the bidding algorithm is superior to solve unbalanced assignment problems.

Abstract:Atomic congestion games are a classic topic in network design, routing, and algorithmic game theory, and are capable of modeling congestion and flow optimization tasks in various application areas. While both the price of anarchy for such games as well as the computational complexity of computing their Nash equilibria are by now well-understood, the computational complexity of computing a system-optimal set of strategies—that is, a centrally planned routing that minimizes the average cost of agents—is severely understudied in the literature. We close this gap by identifying the exact boundaries of tractability for the problem through the lens of the parameterized complexity paradigm. After showing that the problem remains highly intractable even on extremely simple networks, we obtain a set of results which demonstrate that the structural parameters which control the computational (in)tractability of the problem are not vertex-separator based in nature (such as, e.g., treewidth), but rather based on edge separators. We conclude by extending our analysis towards the (even more challenging) min-max variant of the problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we formulate multi-channel assignment in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) as an optimization problem and show it is NP-hard. We then propose a distributed Game Based Channel Assignment algorithm (GBCA) to solve the problem. GBCA takes into account both the network topology information and transmission routing information. We prove that there exists at least one Nash Equilibrium in the channel assignment game. Furthermore, we analyze the sub-optimality of Nash Equilibrium and the convergence of the Best Response in the game. Simulation results are given to demonstrate that GBCA can reduce interference significantly and achieve satisfactory network performance in terms of delivery ratio, throughput, channel access delay and energy consumption.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an online berth allocation problem, where vessels arrive one by one and their information is revealed upon arrival. Our objective is to design online algorithms to minimize the maximum load of all berths (makespan). We first demonstrate that the widely used Greedy algorithm has a very poor theoretical guarantee; specifically, the competitive ratio of the Greedy algorithm for this problem is lower bounded by Ω(log⁡m/log⁡log⁡m), which increases with the number of berths m. On account of this, we borrow an idea from algorithms for the online strip packing problem and provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the Revised Shelf (RS) algorithm as applied to our berth allocation problem. We prove that the competitive ratio of RS for our problem is 5, improving on the original competitive ratio of 6.66 for the online strip packing problem. Through numerical studies, we examine the RS algorithm and Greedy algorithm in an average case. The numerical simulation of competitive ratios reveals distinct advantages for different algorithms depending on job size. For smaller job sizes, the Greedy algorithm emerges as the most efficient, while for medium-sized jobs, the RS algorithm proves to be the most effective.

Online Combinatorial Assignment in Independence Systems

Abstract:We consider an online multi-weighted generalization of several classic online optimization problems, called the online combinatorial assignment problem. We are given an independence system over a ground set of elements and agents that arrive online one by one. Upon arrival, each agent reveals a weight function over the elements of the ground set. If the independence system is given by the matchings of a hypergraph we recover the combinatorial auction problem, where every node represents an item to be sold, and every edge represents a bundle of items. For combinatorial auctions, Kesselheim et al. showed upper bounds of O(loglog(k)/log(k)) and $O(\log \log(n)/\log(n))$ on the competitiveness of any online algorithm, even in the random order model, where $k$ is the maximum bundle size and $n$ is the number of items. We provide an exponential improvement on these upper bounds to show that the competitiveness of any online algorithm in the prophet IID setting is upper bounded by $O(\log(k)/k)$, and $O(\log(n)/\sqrt{n})$. Furthermore, using linear programming, we provide new and improved guarantees for the $k$-bounded online combinatorial auction problem (i.e., bundles of size at most $k$). We show a $(1-e^{-k})/k$-competitive algorithm in the prophet IID model, a $1/(k+1)$-competitive algorithm in the prophet-secretary model using a single sample per agent, and a $k^{-k/(k-1)}$-competitive algorithm in the secretary model. Our algorithms run in polynomial time and work in more general independence systems where the offline combinatorial assignment problem admits the existence of a polynomial-time randomized algorithm that we call certificate sampler. We show that certificate samplers have a nice interplay with random order models, and we also provide new polynomial-time competitive algorithms for some classes of matroids, matroid intersections, and matchoids.

Abstract:We consider the house allocation problem, where $m$ houses are to be assigned to $n$ agents so that each agent gets exactly one house. We present a polynomial-time algorithm that determines whether an envy-free assignment exists, and if so, computes one such assignment. We also show that an envy-free assignment exists with high probability if the number of houses exceeds the number of agents by a logarithmic factor.

A competitive analysis of online failure-aware assignment.

Abstract:Motivated by a new generation of Internet advertising that has emerged in the live streaming e-commerce markets (e.g., Tiktok) over the past five years, we study a variant of online bipartite matching problem: advertisers send ad requests to influencers (aka, key opinion leaders) on a social media platform. Each influencer has a maximum number of ad requests she can accommodate. We assign a fixed number of influencers to an advertiser when she enters the platform. The advertiser then matches with each of the assigned influencers with a probability, which can be thought of as a set of negotiations between the advertiser and the set of assigned influencers. Unlike the standard online assignment problems, the outcome of any of these matches is not revealed throughout the session (negotiations take time). Our goal is to maximize the expected number of matches between advertisers and influencers. We put forward a new deterministic algorithm with a competitive ratio of $1/2$ and prove that no deterministic algorithm can achieve a better competitive ratio. We also show that the competitive ratio can be improved when randomness is allowed. We then study a setting where a match is successful with either probability 0 or a fixed $p$. We present an optimal randomized algorithm that achieves a competitive ratio of $1-1/e$ in this setting.
Taming the Exponential Action Set: Sublinear Regret and Fast Convergence to Nash Equilibrium in Online Congestion Games

Abstract:The congestion game is a powerful model that encompasses a range of engineering systems such as traffic networks and resource allocation. It describes the behavior of a group of agents who share a common set of $F$ facilities and take actions as subsets with $k$ facilities. In this work, we study the online formulation of congestion games, where agents participate in the game repeatedly and observe feedback with randomness. We propose CongestEXP, a decentralized algorithm that applies the classic exponential weights method. By maintaining weights on the facility level, the regret bound of CongestEXP avoids the exponential dependence on the size of possible facility sets, i.e., $\binom{F}{k} \approx F^k$, and scales only linearly with $F$. Specifically, we show that CongestEXP attains a regret upper bound of $O(kF\sqrt{T})$ for every individual player, where $T$ is the time horizon. On the other hand, exploiting the exponential growth of weights enables CongestEXP to achieve a fast convergence rate. If a strict Nash equilibrium exists, we show that CongestEXP can converge to the strict Nash policy almost exponentially fast in $O(F\exp(-t^{1-\alpha}))$, where $t$ is the number of iterations and $\alpha \in (1/2, 1)$.

Dynamic Combinatorial Assignment

Abstract:We study a model of dynamic combinatorial assignment of indivisible objects without money. We introduce a new solution concept called ``dynamic approximate competitive equilibrium from equal incomes'' (DACEEI), which stipulates that markets must approximately clear in almost all time periods. A naive repeated application of approximate competitive equilibrium from equal incomes (Budish, 2011) does not yield a desirable outcome because the approximation error in market-clearing compounds quickly over time. We therefore develop a new version of the static approximate competitive equilibrium from carefully constructed random budgets which ensures that, in expectation, markets clear exactly. We then use it to design the ``online combinatorial assignment mechanism'' (OCAM) which implements a DACEEI with high probability. The OCAM is (i) group-strategyproof up to one object (ii) envy-free up to one object for almost all agents (iii) approximately market-clearing in almost all periods with high probability when the market is large and arrivals are random. Applications include refugee resettlement, daycare assignment, and airport slot allocation.

Greediness is not always a vice: Efficient Discovery Algorithms for Assignment Problems

Abstract:Finding a maximum-weight matching is a classical and well-studied problem in computer science, solvable in cubic time in general graphs. We consider the specialization called assignment problem where the input is a bipartite graph, and introduce in this work the ``discovery'' variant considering edge weights that are not provided as input but must be queried, requiring additional and costly computations. We develop here discovery algorithms aiming to minimize the number of queried weights while providing guarantees on the computed solution. We first show in this work the inherent challenges of designing discovery algorithms for general assignment problems. We then provide and analyze several efficient greedy algorithms that can make use of natural assumptions about the order in which the nodes are processed by the algorithms. Our motivations for exploring this problem stem from finding practical solutions to a variation of maximum-weight matching in bipartite hypergraphs, a problem recently emerging in the formation of peer-to-peer energy sharing communities.

Abstract:In loosely‐coupled multiprocessor systems, a parallel program has its modules distributedly assigned among the processors. The assignment policy is to minimize interprocessor communication cost and to balance the workload of processors. However, there exists conflict between these two criteria and a compromise must be made to obtain an optimal solution. In this paper, we propose a new task assignment model for distributed computing systems, and for solving the assignment problem based on partitioning graphs. The problem of finding an optimal solution had been shown to be in the class of NP‐complete. For the sake of computation efficiency, we propose some heuristics for obtaining suboptimal solutions.

Abstract:We study a model of selfish resource allocation that seeks to incorporate dependencies among resources as they exist in modern networked environments. Our model is inspired by utility functions with constant elasticity of substitution (CES) which is a well-studied model in economics. We consider congestion games with different aggregation functions. In particular, we study $L_p$ norms and analyze the existence and complexity of (approximate) pure Nash equilibria. Additionally, we give an almost tight characterization based on monotonicity properties to describe the set of aggregation functions that guarantee the existence of pure Nash equilibria.

Abstract:In many applications such as rationing medical care and supplies, university admissions, and the assignment of public housing, the decision of who receives an allocation can be justified by various normative criteria. Such settings have motivated the following priority-respecting allocation problem: several categories, each with a quota of interchangeable items, wish to allocate the items among a set of agents. Each category has a list of eligible agents and a priority ordering over these agents; agents may be eligible in multiple categories. The goal is to select a valid allocation: one that respects quotas, eligibility, and priorities and ensures Pareto efficiency. We provide an algorithmic characterization of all valid allocations, exhibiting a bijection between sets of agents who can be allocated and maximum-weight matchings under carefully chosen rank-based weights. While prior work provides a polynomial-time algorithm to locate a valid allocation, our characterization admits a simpler algorithm that enables two wide-reaching extensions: 1. Selecting valid allocations that satisfy additional criteria: Via three examples -- inclusion/exclusion of some chosen agent; agent-side Pareto efficiency vs. welfare maximization; and fairness from the perspective of allocated vs. unallocated agents -- we show that finding priority-respecting allocations subject to some secondary constraint straddles a complexity knife-edge; in each example, one problem variant can be solved efficiently, while its variant is NP-hard. 2. Efficiency-envy tradeoffs in dynamic allocation: In settings where allocations must be made to T agents arriving sequentially via some stochastic process, we show that while insisting on zero priority violations leads to an Omega(T) loss in efficiency, one can design allocation policies ensuring that the sum of the efficiency loss and priority violations in hindsight is O(1).

Abstract:We study a new class of games which generalizes congestion games and its bottleneck variant. We introduce congestion games with mixed objectives to model network scenarios in which players seek to optimize for latency and bandwidths alike. We characterize the existence of pure Nash equilibria (PNE) and the convergence of improvement dynamics. For games that do not possess PNE we give bounds on the approximation ratio of approximate pure Nash equilibria.

New Auction Algorithms for the Assignment Problem and Extensions

Abstract:We consider the classical linear assignment problem, and we introduce new auction algorithms for its optimal and suboptimal solution. The algorithms are founded on duality theory, and are related to ideas of competitive bidding by persons for objects and the attendant market equilibrium, which underlie real-life auction processes. We distinguish between two fundamentally different types of bidding mechanisms: aggressive and cooperative. Mathematically, aggressive bidding relies on a notion of approximate coordinate descent in dual space, an epsilon-complementary slackness condition to regulate the amount of descent approximation, and the idea of epsilon-scaling to resolve efficiently the price wars that occur naturally as multiple bidders compete for a smaller number of valuable objects. Cooperative bidding avoids price wars through detection and cooperative resolution of any competitive impasse that involves a group of persons. We discuss the relations between the aggressive and the cooperative bidding approaches, we derive new algorithms and variations that combine ideas from both of them, and we also make connections with other primal-dual methods, including the Hungarian method. Furthermore, our discussion points the way to algorithmic extensions that apply more broadly to network optimization, including shortest path, max-flow, transportation, and minimum cost flow problems with both linear and convex cost functions.
