Abstract:A new synthetic methodology for the synthesis of 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenes from ortho-aryl alkynyl benzyl alcohols and arenes via a Tf2O-mediated formal [5 + 2] annulation reaction has been achieved. From this transformation, structurally diverse 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenes were achieved in moderate to good yields. This transformation probably involves an intermolecular Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation and a subsequent intramolecular 7-endo-dig cyclization in one pot, highlighting the high efficiency, regioselectivity, and step-economy of this protocol.

Abstract:Abstract The rotation of a C = C bond in an alkene can be efficiently accelerated by creating the high-strain ground state and stabilizing the transition state of the process. Herein, the synthesis, structures, and properties of several highly twisted alkenes are comprehensively explored. A facile and practical synthetic approach to target molecules is developed. The twist angles and lengths of the central C = C bonds in these molecules are 36–58° and 1.40–1.43 Å, respectively, and confirmed by X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations. A quasi-planar molecular half with the π-extended substituents delivers a shallow rotational barrier (down to 2.35 kcal/mol), indicating that the rotation of the C = C bond is as facile as that of the aryl-aryl bond in 2-flourobiphenyl. Other versatile and unique properties of the studied compounds include a broad photoabsorption range (from 250 up to 1100 nm), a reduced HOMO-LUMO gap (1.26–1.68 eV), and a small singlet-triplet energy gap (3.65–5.68 kcal/mol).

Abstract:Anti-aromatic compounds, as well as small cyclic alkynes or carbynes, are particularly challenging synthetic goals. The combination of their destabilizing features hinders attempts to prepare molecules such as pentalyne, an 8 π -electron anti-aromatic bicycle with extremely high ring strain. Here we describe the facile synthesis of osmapentalyne derivatives that are thermally viable, despite containing the smallest angles observed so far at a carbyne carbon. The compounds are characterized using X-ray crystallography, and their computed energies and magnetic properties reveal aromatic character. Hence, the incorporation of the osmium centre not only reduces the ring strain of the parent pentalyne, but also converts its Hückel anti-aromaticity into Craig-type Möbius aromaticity in the metallapentalynes. The concept of aromaticity is thus extended to five-membered rings containing a metal–carbon triple bond. Moreover, these metal–aromatic compounds exhibit unusual optical effects such as near-infrared photoluminescence with particularly large Stokes shifts, long lifetimes and aggregation enhancement.

Abstract:Success in obtaining higher-order twistarenes with precise structures is very important for fundamentally understanding the relationship between the structures and physical properties/optoelectronic applications. In this research, by using the advantages from a retro-Diels-Alder process (clean reaction) and the cross-conjugated nature of the pyrene unit, a novel dodeca-twistarene was prepared for the first time. Its structure, confirmed by single-crystal XRD analysis, indicates that it possesses a twisted angle (approximate to 30 degrees), and two neighboring molecules in the crystal lattice are perpendicular to each other because of the twisted character and the strong intermolecular CH-pi interactions. However, its basic physicochemical properties suggest its instability in air derives from its elevated HOMO energy level, although NICS calculations confirm that the pyrene units contribution poorly to the conjugation of the overall molecule.

Abstract:Several novel azacalix[4]aromatics constituting terphenylene units have been synthesized via sequential nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions of 5′-t-butyl-(1,1′:3′,1″-terphenyl)-3,3″-diamine 9 and 5′-t-butyl-(1,1′:3′,1″-terphenyl)– 4,4″-diamine 11 with 1,5-difluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and cyanuric chloride, respectively. The bridging –NH– functions of the tetra-nitro substituted azacalix[2]arene[2]terphenylenes 1 and 2 have been transformed to the corresponding –N(CH3)– bridged azacalix[2]arene[2]terphenylenes 3 and 4 via N-alkylation. Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the terphenyl-3,3″-diamine derived azacalix[2]terphenylene[2]triazine 5 adopts a distorted chair conformation in the solid state, and the terphenyl-4,4″-diamine derived azacalix[2]terphenylene[2]triazine 6 was found to adopt a 1,3-alternate conformation.

Key steps include a Pd-catalyzed Negishi coupling to assemble the necessary terphenyl intermediate, its closure into a 14-membered macrocycle via a catalytic-in-phosphine Wittig olefination, and finally a Pt-catalyzed alkyne hydroarylation, which is able to assemble the phenanthrene unit despite the thermodynamic cost of significantly bending arene A from the ideal plane.

Abstract:We report a one-pot synthesis of a series of unprecedented angular-fused diaza-dinaphthopyrene isomers (1,8-DNPy and 1,6-DNPy) in high yields, which are enabled by regio-selective Bischler-Napieralski cyclization to fuse two quinolone rings either on the same or opposite faces of a pyrene core. Benefiting from the high reactivity of the 1- and 8-positions of the pyrene ring, steric effect from substitution and remarkably different dipole moments, high ring closure selectivity for the 1,8-form vs. the 1,6-form up to 6 : 1 is achieved with ease of separation. With differentiated molecular symmetry, conformation, intermolecular interactions and aromaticity, the two kinds of regio-isomers exhibit distinct single-crystal structures and optoelectronic properties. Impressively, isomer-dependent mechanochromic fluorescent properties of these 2D-azaacenes are identified, which are unique in their turn-on fluorescence feature and contrasting spectral shifts. These findings allow facile and modular access to regio-specific 2D-N-heteroarenes, which provide a way to create innovative optical sensors with improved sensitivity and fruitful fluorescent properties.

Abstract:Porphyrin-based nanohoops, nanorings, and cages with fully π-conjugated structures are highly sought after, but their synthesis remains challenging. Herein, we report the template-free synthesis of a highly strained, bithiophene-bridged porphyrin cyclophane (1) from a porphyrin quinone via a stereoselective nucleophilic addition followed by intermolecular Yamamoto coupling strategy. X-ray crystallographic analyses of 1 and its dication 12+ reveal significantly distorted cyclophane-like geometries, with calculated strain energies of 51.2 and 80.7 kcal/mol, respectively. While the neutral compound 1 exhibits localized aromaticity, the dication 12+ is globally aromatic, with the porphyrin unit displaying weak antiaromaticity. Additionally, the dication 12+ undergoes nucleophilic addition with chloride, relieving strain. This work presents a novel synthetic strategy for highly strained, fully π-conjugated systems with intriguing electronic properties and chemical reactivity.

Abstract:The zigzag-edged triangular graphene molecules (ZTGMs) have been predicted to host ferromagnetically coupled edge states with the net spin scaling with the molecular size, which affords large spin tunability crucial for next-generation molecular spintronics. However, the scalable synthesis of large ZTGMs and the direct observation of their edge states have been long-standing challenges because of the molecules’ high chemical instability. Here, we report the bottom-up synthesis of π-extended [5]triangulene with atomic precision via surface-assisted cyclodehydrogenation of a rationally designed molecular precursor on metallic surfaces. Atomic force microscopy measurements unambiguously resolve its ZTGM-like skeleton consisting of 15 fused benzene rings, while scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal edge-localized electronic states. Bolstered by density functional theory calculations, our results show that [5]triangulenes synthesized on Au(111) retain the open-shell π-conjugated character with magnetic ground states.

Abstract:Acene derivatives as a class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have attracted considerable interest because of their outstanding semiconductor properties. We developed a one-pot synthesis for fully conjugated tetraphene via a sequence of propargyl-allenyl isomerization, phosphine addition, intramolecular Wittig reactions, and Diels-Alder cyclization reactions. The derivative-conjugated aromatic compounds including carbazole or triphenylamine have been constructed via Pd-catalyzed coupling reaction with dibromotetraphene. These compounds show superior photophysical and electrochemical properties, which make them possible candidates for optoelectronic conjugated materials.

Abstract:A synthetic approach to the previously unknown thieno[2,3-f][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]azepine derivatives was efficiently accomplished by cycloaddition of the bicyclic 1-aza-2-azoniaallene salts 6, derived from 6,7-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophen-4(5H)-one hydrazones 4, to the triple bond of nitriles, followed by ring enlargement. The X-ray crystal diffraction analysis of the picrate 10a provided affirmative proof for the structural assignment made.

Abstract:An unexpected cascade transformation of aminonaph-thoquinones with N-substituents bearing a p-methoxybenzyl ether into bridged-ring-fused naphthalenone derivatives is reported. This cascade transformation was initiated by a catalytic amount of Zn(OTf)(2) and involved with subsequent functional group migration and cyclization. The process proceeded through the cleavage of two bonds and the formation of three new bonds in one pot and was proven to be efficient and tolerant to various substituents.

Abstract:Two different lengths of twistacenes, namely hexatwistacene and decatwistacene induced by the steric-hindrance effect between imide groups and neighbouring annulated benzene rings, were synthesized via bottom-up synthesis of palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling and C-H activation reaction. Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed that decatwistacene, which is the longest twistacene reported until now, exhibits an astonishing overall end-to-end torsion angle of about 170, the largest torsion angle reported so far. Both twistacenes have an enhanced solubility and stability with respect to light and oxygen due to their large twisting deformations together with much lower LUMO levels caused by the introduction of imide groups, opening a window to the narrowest chiral graphene nanoribbons with good stability and processability.

Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of diindeno-fused dibenzo[a,h]anthracene derivatives (DIDBA-2Cl, DIDBA-2Ph, and DIDBA-2H) with different degrees of non-planarity using three substituents (chloro, phenyl, and hydrogen) of various sizes. The planarization of their cores, as evidenced by the decreased end-to-end torsional angles, was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Their enhanced energy gaps with twisting were investigated by a combination of spectroscopic and electrochemical methods with density functional theory, which showed a transition from singlet open-shell to closed-shell configuration. Moreover, their doubly reduced states, DIDBA-2Ph(2-) and DIDBA-2H(2-), were achieved by chemical reduction. The structures of dianions were identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis, which elucidated that the electron charging further distorted the backbones. The electronic structure of the dianions was demonstrated by experimental and theoretical approaches, suggesting decreased energy gaps with larger non-planarity, different from the neutral species.
