Abstract:We analyze the various morphing structures obtained by actuating Janus filaments comprising driven and passive sectors and textiles incorporating driven and passive filaments. Transitions between alternative shapes and coexistence of absolutely stable and metastable states within a certain range of relative extension upon actuation are detected both in Janus rings and textiles. Both single filaments and textiles can be reverse designed to bend into desired shapes by controlling both the size and orientation of driven sectors.

Abstract:The development of smart textiles with thermal/moisture regulation is crucial for outdoor activities and healthcare applications. However, incorporating dynamic adaptive thermal management into conventional fabrics to provide consistent comfort remains a significant challenge. Inspired by the ingenious stomata of plant leaves, a novel Janus-type cotton fabric is fabricated by covalently linking shape memory polymer (SMP) on the surfaces of cotton fibers via the combination of the “grafting from” strategy and the “mist polymerization” methodology. This unique coating induces yarns to dynamically twist in response to temperature, switching the pore apertures in the fabric and allowing for adaptive adjustment of both heat dissipation capability and moisture permeability. The resulting fabrics provide effective thermal insulation at low temperatures, while demonstrating an enhanced cooling effect at high temperatures. Meanwhile, the asymmetrical distribution of SMP across the fabric enables unidirectional water transport, improving sweat removal and cooling. Additionally, the excellent biocompatibility and fabric flexibility allow for comfortable garment fabrication. This work provides novel insights into the field of self-adaptive thermal regulation, demonstrating promising potential for smart textile applications.

Abstract:The use of shape-memory polymers in textile application is relatively new, because the stringent requirements on mechanical strength and thermal stability of fibres have been so far hard to meet. This section reviews the current state-of-the-art, focusing on the key characteristics of the polymer materials required to produce textile-grade fibres, and the techniques of filament production. An extensive review of literature on this subject is presented, with the results of our own development of shape-memory polyurethane polymers and their fibres for textile applications.

Abstract:We describe a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of shape-morphing structures assembled by actuating composite (Janus) fibers, taking into account multiple relevant factors affecting shape transformations, such as strain rate, composition, and geometry of the structures. Starting with simple bending experiments, we demonstrate the ways to attain multiple out-of-plane shapes of closed rings and square frames. Through combining theory and simulation, we examine how the mechanical properties of Janus fibers affect shape transitions. This allows us to control shape changes and to attain target 3D shapes by precise tuning of the material properties and geometry of the fibers. Our results open new perspectives of design of advanced mechanical metamaterials capable to create elaborate structures through sophisticated actuation modes.

Abstract:Novel intelligent textile structures responding to changes in the environment are developed by using polymer artificial muscles and examples of structures and mechanisms that can be used in the future are presented. These actuating textiles can change their porosity with or without any change in fabric lateral dimension or can change their loft or can either bend or fold upon temperature change. Textiles that intelligently respond to changes in the environment by reversibly providing dramatic changes in structure for comfort, safety, or appearance are widely sought. In order to facilitate applications development, here novel intelligent textile structures are described and developed by using polymer artificial muscles and examples of structures and mechanisms are provided that can be used in the future. These actuating textiles, which deploy a host of muscle yarn and fiber types, can change their porosity with or without any change in fabric lateral dimension or can change their loft or can either bend or fold upon temperature change. The presented intelligent textiles provide a porosity increase up to 38.3% from room temperature to 40 °C, while they exhibit a decrease in porosity up to 26.1% from room temperature to −5 °C. Textiles that can bend at an angle of 60° at 40 °C, while exhibiting a complete roll‐up at 70 °C, are also presented. An important way to change the direction of actuation produced by environmental exposure is to transition from homochiral fibers to heterochiral fibers. Other more complicated yarn types can usefully deploy chirality effects, such as yarns that are twisted and coiled, or yarns that are twisted, coiled, and then plied.

Abstract:Assistive interfaces enable collaborative interactions between humans and robots. In contrast to traditional rigid devices, conformable fabrics with tunable mechanical properties have emerged as compelling alternatives. However, existing assistive fabrics actuated by fluidic or thermal stimuli struggle to adapt to complex body contours and are hindered by challenges such as large volumes after actuation and slow response rates. To overcome these limitations, we draw inspiration from biological protective organisms combining hard and soft phases, and propose active assistive fabrics consisting of architectured rigid tiles interconnected with flexible actuated fibers. Through programmable tessellation of target body shapes into architectured tiles and controlling their interactions by the actuated fibers, our active fabrics can rapidly (within seconds) transition between soft compliant configurations and rigid states conformable to the body (> 350 times stiffness change, loading capacity to weight ratio > 50) while minimizing the device volume after actuation. We demonstrate the versatility of our active fabrics as exosuits for tremor suppression and lifting assistance. We also present its potential as body armors for impact mitigation. Electrothermal actuators are integrated for smart actuation with convenient folding capabilities. Our work offers a practical framework for designing customizable active fabrics with shape adaptivity and controllable stiffness, these active fabrics have wide applications in wearable exosuits, haptic devices, and medical rehabilitation systems. Abstract:We present IntelliTex, a low-cost and highly accessible double-coating fabrication method for washable and reusable functional textiles with customized input functionalities. Specifcally, of-the-shelf textiles are firstly coated with conductive carbon black using pen ink, which endows textiles with rich sensing capabilities, such as pressure, stretch, slide, and temperature. Secondly, textiles are coated with polyurethane to enhance the sensing stability over wash cycles for good reusability. To support user customization, we enrich the design space of double-coating by exploring various coating methods and diverse textiles to be coated. We further contribute a comprehensive library of input components and an online document to make our approach accessible to novice users. Finally, five application examples and a user study showcase the versatile functionalities and user accessibility of our method, with which we hope to support designers, makers, and researchers to easily create functional textiles ready to use in everyday life.

Abstract:This chapter presents a survey of reported mechanical models of fabrics, as well as of technologies currently available to confer actuation properties to fabrics. The modelling of base mechanics of fabrics is here reviewed as a useful tool for a proper design of future new compliant actuators capable of being integrated into a textile substrate. The embedding of such devices into fabrics is studied to confer them actuation properties, functional to one or more barrier effects, such as active filtration. To this aim, state-of-the-art technologies for actuation of fabrics are reviewed and discussed in the light of such new applications.

Abstract:Abstract Smart wearables equipped with integrated flexible actuators possess the ability to autonomously respond and adapt to changes in the environment. Fibrous textiles have been recognised as promising platforms for integrating flexible actuators and wearables owing to their superior body compliance, lightweight nature, and programmable architectures. Various studies related to textile actuators in smart wearables have been recently reported. However, the review focusing on the advanced design of these textile actuator technologies for smart wearables is lacking. Herein, a timely and thorough review of the progress achieved in this field over the past five years is presented. This review focuses on the advanced design concepts for textile actuators in smart wearables, covering functional materials, innovative architecture configurations, external stimuli, and their applications in smart wearables. The primary aspects focus on actuating materials, formation techniques of textile architecture, actuating behaviour and performance metrics of textile actuators, various applications in smart wearables, and the design challenges for next-generation smart wearables. Abstract:The marriage of textiles with artificial muscles to create smart textiles is attracting great attention from the scientific community and industry. Smart textiles offer many benefits including adaptive comfort and high conformity to objects while providing active actuation for desired motion and force. This paper introduces a new class of programmable smart textiles created from different methods of knitting, weaving, and sticking fluid-driven artificial muscle fibers. Mathematical models are developed to describe the elongation-force relationship of the knitting and weaving textile sheets, followed by experiments to validate the model effectiveness. The new smart textiles are highly flexible, conformable, and mechanically programmable, enabling multimodal motions and shape-shifting abilities for use in broader applications. Different prototypes of the smart textiles are created with experimental validations including various shape-changing instances such as elongation (up to 65%), area expansion (108%), radial expansion (25%), and bending motion. The concept of reconfiguring passive conventional fabrics into active structures for bio-inspired shape-morphing structures is also explored. The proposed smart textiles are expected to contribute to the progression of smart wearable devices, haptic systems, bio-inspired soft robotics, and wearable electronics.

Abstract:Janus textiles with asymmetric wettability have shown great potential in wearable applications due to their ability to manage biofluids efficiently. This review summarizes recent advances in smart Janus textiles for biofluid control and monitoring, focusing on wearable technologies. We first introduce the design configurations and fabrication approaches of Janus textiles, including asymmetric generation and asymmetric decoration strategies. We then highlight their diverse wearable applications spanning personal thermal management textiles, sweat sensors, hemostatic wound dressings, and protective equipment. These textiles offer innovative solutions for directional sweat transport, enhancing cooling and humidity control, and providing antibacterial properties. Finally, we discuss current limitations in durability, biocompatibility, and manufacturing scalability, alongside emerging opportunities in the field of smart Janus textiles.

Abstract:A method for controlling the elastic deformation properties of polymer‒fiber composites was developed. The rigidity of the material is increased by the penetration of the reinforcing polymer into the pore structure of the textile substrate to form а branched interfacial layer. The nanoparticle size distribution in the polymer hydrosol products was analyzed by dynamic light scattering, the porosity of fibrous materials was measured by low temperature of adsorption and desorption of nitrogen vapor, and the polymer‒polymer interactions were studied by IR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The method was implemented in the development of a new range of garment interfacings and allowed solution of engineering problems associated with imparting to garments a complex geometric shape and its retention in wear.

Abstract:Multifunctional textiles have gained recent attention due their intrinsic properties that provide actuator, energy dampening, or sensory capabilities within small form factor textiles without external attachments. Such technologies are specifically appealing for medical and aerospace wearables, where active compression, haptic feedback, or the tracking of bodily functions are important tasks that are ideally conducted in a minimally-intrusive fashion. Current design capabilities of multifunctional textile are limited as present predictive tools lack accuracy and universality. This paper presents a finite beam element modeling tool for shape memory alloy (SMA) knitted architectures. The temperature-dependent variation of material properties within the SMA knitted loop affects the macroscopic force-extension behavior of SMA knitted architectures leading to an actuated and a relaxed knitted architecture response. This difference is exploited as the active property in SMA knitted architectures. The modeling architecture defines interfaces between sub-models organized in modules, specifically the material constitutive module, repetitive unit cell module, manufacturing module, contact module, and a boundary condition module. The SMA knitted architecture is modeled utilizing a 1D SMA constitutive model, quarter loop knit unit cell, a differential geometry-based manufacturing model, while assuming 3D Coulomb friction conditions. Kinematically-suitable boundary conditions are applied and the simulation predictions are compared quantitatively to macroscopic tensile experimental results, as well as qualitatively to microscopic x -ray diffraction phase analysis. The verification against experimental data supports the ability of the modeling tool to accurately predict the SMA knitted architecture thermo-mechanical performance with mean force-extension errors of less than 5%. The modeling tool provides the basis to understand, design, and optimize the lightweight, large force and deformation SMA knitted actuator textiles for novel applications. Additionally, the multifunctional textile modeling tool is implemented based on highly interchangeable sub-models to create synergies and propel the modeling of any multifunctional textile.

Smart Janus cotton fabrics prepared via mist polymerization for moisture and thermal management

Abstract:The construction of Janus structures on cotton fabrics can endow the fabrics with dynamic multifunctional properties. However, because of the large pores between fabric fibers, the formation of Janus structures by grafting different functional coatings on the double surfaces of cotton fabrics via dipping technology is difficult. To construct Janus structures on cotton fabrics, mist polymerization and "grafting-through" polymerization technologies were used to graft polylauryl methacrylate and a heat-shrinkable thermosensitive antibacterial polymer on the inside and outside surfaces of the cotton fabric, respectively. The as-formed Janus cotton fabric demonstrated excellent antibacterial durability. Even after subjecting the Janus fabric to 70 laundering cycles, its bacterial rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were > 93.0 %. Compared with the pristine cotton fabric, when the ambient temperature is high or low, the Janus fabric can adjust the skin temperature within 5 min by approximately ±3.0 °C. Additionally, the fabric exhibited excellent waterproof and moisture permeability properties. The Janus cotton fabrics prepared by the proposed strategy possess significant potential for applications in the field of wearable textiles.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the development of a methodology for the directional structural modification of warp-knitted fabrics by sewing on carbon fiber tapes. Four-, five-, and six-axial geometric systems were designed to optimize the qualitative distribution of stresses on the surface of the tested product. Through a numerical experiment in the ANSYS environment, the impact of the change in the axiality of a textile structure on the mechanical properties of the modeled geometric configuration was assessed. This analysis was experimentally verified by measuring the multiaxial force distribution on the knitted surface, which demonstrated that Variant 7, with six axes 30° apart, was the most favorable.

Abstract:A method of providing localised haptic feedback at precise locations on the body, utilising a lightweight textile garment is presented in this short paper. The textile comprises of subtly integrated actuator yarns (HaptiYarns) which are controlled by electropneumatic circuitry. Each yarn has two functional layers, an inner porous textile layer with limited extensibility and a second, durable outer layer made from an extensible elastomer. The HaptiYarns can provide radial forces and a maximum radial displacement of 28.09 ± 0.14 mm. It was found that the intrinsic addition of graphite powder (5% by weight), during elastomer preparation, offered better resistance to layer delamination and increased the ability of the yarn to withstand higher internal air pressures by 48%. Both the graphite-filled composite and the graphite free yarns demonstrated high durability, withstanding cyclic testing of >7500 cycles while having no significant impact on the force feedback. Finally, a wearable prototype knitted textile garment is presented with eight HaptiYarns subtly integrated within it and connected to a virtual reality (VR) program providing an immersive haptic experience. These yarns offer the potential to transform everyday clothing into wearable haptic devices with potential to revolutionise healthcare, VR-based training, gaming, and entertainment sectors.

Abstract:A method for the fabrication of a biomimetic Janus composite membrane is reported here. This approach is based on a membrane with a vertical gradient crosslinking degree, which is achieved through UV light–induced dimerization of anthracene grafted on poly(styrene‐block‐butadiene‐block‐styrene) chains in the presence of carbon nanotubes. UV light penetration is controlled by the accretion of carbon nanotubes to ultimately tailor the heterogeneous crosslinking degree in thickness. This kind of Janus structure is applied here for shape actuation. Here, solvent or shape memory effect–induced shape morphing is obtained via the heterogeneous swelling (deswelling) abilities of, or internal stress from, the Janus structure. By tailoring the UV light irradiation time, the irradiated region and the prestrain, sophisticated and multiple types of shape morphing are programed. In addition, this type of Janus structure can shift back to the homogeneous structure via dedimerization of the anthracene dimers upon thermal treatment, which provides extensive freedom for the design of smart responsive actuators.
Untethered, Dynamic Robotic Fabrics Enabled by Actively‐Rigid Variable Stiffness Fibers

Abstract:A novel, electrically‐driven variable‐stiffness fiber transitions from a flat to curved cross‐section, providing a rigid structure when powered and flexibility otherwise. This actively‐rigid, passively‐soft fiber enables the creation of sturdy legs for thin, fabric‐based machines while retaining flexibility when unpowered. Paired with a compatible actuator, this fiber enables a first‐of‐its‐kind, fully untethered locomoting robotic fabric. A robot that uses fabrics as its core body material can be lightweight, compact, and highly flexible. Ideally, the robot's actuation, sensing, and structural support are provided by fiber‐based components, designed to integrate with the fabric's soft and conformable nature while preserving its fiber architecture. Typically, variable stiffness fibers are used for the structural elements, functioning as "bones" that can be turned on and off as needed. However, many variable stiffness fibers are passively‐rigid, only allowing the fabric to become soft when powered, while some require bulky external air or power supplies, making them untenable for untethered robotics. In this work, an electrically‐driven variable stiffness fiber is presented that performs a flat‐to‐curved geometry transition, providing a rigid load‐bearing structure when powered but remaining flexible otherwise. Design principles for pairing the actively‐rigid variable stiffness fiber with a materially compatible fiber‐based actuator are presented, and the actuator performance in different configurations is characterized. The variable stiffness fiber can be arranged into sturdy legs, stable enough for a robotic fabric to lift and hold its own battery pack and onboard electronics. This capability is demonstrated with a first‐of‐its‐kind fully‐untethered locomoting robotic fabric using two different quadruped gaits.

Structured fabrics with tunable mechanical properties

Abstract:Structured fabrics, such as woven sheets or chain mail armours, derive their properties both from the constitutive materials and their geometry1,2. Their design can target desirable characteristics, such as high impact resistance, thermal regulation, or electrical conductivity3,4,5. Once realized, however, the fabrics' properties are usually fixed. Here we demonstrate structured fabrics with tunable bending modulus, consisting of three-dimensional particles arranged into layered chain mails. The chain mails conform to complex shapes2, but when pressure is exerted at their boundaries, the particles interlock and the chain mails jam. We show that, with small external pressure (about 93 kilopascals), the sheets become more than 25 times stiffer than in their relaxed configuration. This dramatic increase in bending resistance arises because the interlocking particles have high tensile resistance, unlike what is found for loose granular media. We use discrete-element simulations to relate the chain mail's micro-structure to macroscale properties and to interpret experimental measurements. We find that chain mails, consisting of different non-convex granular particles, undergo a jamming phase transition that is described by a characteristic power-law function akin to the behaviour of conventional convex media. Our work provides routes towards lightweight, tunable and adaptive fabrics, with potential applications in wearable exoskeletons, haptic architectures and reconfigurable medical supports.
