Abstract:Quasisymmetry (QS), a hidden symmetry of the magnetic field strength, is known to support nested flux surfaces and provide superior particle confinement in stellarators. In this work, we study the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium and stability of high-beta plasma in a large-aspect-ratio stellarator. In particular, we show that the lowest-order description of a near-axisymmetric equilibrium vastly simplifies the problem of three-dimensional quasisymmetric MHD equilibria, which can be reduced to a standard elliptic Grad–Shafranov equation for the flux function. We show that any large-aspect-ratio tokamak, deformed periodically in the vertical direction, is a stellarator with approximate volumetric QS. We discuss exact analytical solutions and numerical benchmarks. Finally, we discuss the ideal ballooning and interchange stability of some of our equilibrium configurations.

Abstract:The rapid deposition of energy by Edge Localised Modes (ELMs) onto plasma facing components, is a potentially serious issue for large Tokamaks such as ITER and DEMO. The trigger for ELMs is believed to be the ideal Magnetohydrodynamic Peeling-Ballooning instability, but recent numerical calculations have suggested that a plasma equilibrium with an X-point - as is found in all ITER-like Tokamaks, is stable to the Peeling mode. This contrasts with analytical calculations (G. Laval, R. Pellat, J. S. Soule, Phys Fluids, {\bf 17}, 835, (1974)), that found the Peeling mode to be unstable in cylindrical plasmas with arbitrary cross-sectional shape. However the analytical calculation only applies to a Tokamak plasma in a cylindrical approximation. Here, we re-examine the assumptions made in cylindrical geometry calculations, and generalise the calculation to an arbitrary Tokamak geometry at marginal stability. The resulting equations solely describe the Peeling mode, and are not complicated by coupling to the ballooning mode, for example. We find that stability is determined by the value of a single parameter $\Delta'$ that is the poloidal average of the normalised jump in the radial derivative of the perturbed magnetic field's normal component. We also find that near a separatrix it is possible for the energy principle's $\delta W$ to be negative (that is usually taken to indicate that the mode is unstable, as in the cylindrical theory), but the growth rate to be arbitrarily small.

Abstract:The cat-eyes steady state solution in the framework of hydrodynamics describing an infinite row of identical vortices is extended to the magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium equation with incompressible flow of arbitrary direction. The extended solution covers a variety of equilibria including one- and two-dimensional generalized force-free and Harris-sheet configurations which are preferable from those usually employed as initial states in reconnection studies. Although the vortex shape is not affected by the magnetic field, the flow in conjunction with the equilibrium nonlinearity has a strong impact on isobaric surfaces by forming pressure islands located within the cat-eyes vortices. More importantly, a magnetic-field-aligned flow of experimental fusion relevance and the flow shear have significant stabilizing effects in the region of pressure islands. The stable region is enhanced by an external axial ("toroidal") magnetic field.

Abstract:In the first part to this paper\cite{part1} it was shown how a simple Magnetohydrodynamic model could be used to determine the stability of a Tokamak plasma's edge to a Peeling (External Kink) mode. Stability was found to be determined by the value of $\Delta'$, a normalised measure of the discontinuity in the radial derivative of the radial perturbation to the magnetic field at the plasma-vacuum interface. Here we calculate $\Delta'$, but in a way that avoids the numerical divergences that can arise near a separatrice's X-point. This is accomplished by showing how the method of conformal transformations may be generalised to allow their application to systems with a non-zero boundary condition, and using the technique to obtain analytic expressions for both the vacuum energy and $\Delta'$. A conformal transformation is used again to obtain an equilibrium vacuum field surrounding a plasma with a separatrix. This allows the subsequent evaluation of the vacuum energy and $\Delta'$. For a plasma-vacuum boundary that approximates a separatrix, the growth rate $\gamma$ normalised by the Aflven frequency $\gamma_A$ is then found to have $\ln(\gamma/\gamma_A)=-{1/2} \ln (q'/q)$. Consequences for Peeling mode stability are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract A tokamak relies on the axisymmetric magnetic fields to confine fusion plasmas and aims to deliver sustainable and clean energy. However, misalignments arise inevitably in the tokamak construction, leading to small asymmetries in the magnetic field known as error fields (EFs). The EFs have been a major concern in the tokamak approaches because small EFs, even less than 0.1%, can drive a plasma disruption. Meanwhile, the EFs in the tokamak can be favorably used for controlling plasma instabilities, such as edge-localized modes (ELMs). Here we show an optimization that tailors the EFs to maintain an edge 3D response for ELM control with a minimized core 3D response to avoid plasma disruption and unnecessary confinement degradation. We design and demonstrate such an edge-localized 3D response in the KSTAR facility, benefiting from its unique flexibility to change many degrees of freedom in the 3D coil space for the various fusion plasma regimes. This favorable control of the tokamak EF represents a notable advance for designing intrinsically 3D tokamaks to optimize stability and confinement for next-step fusion reactors.

A new quasilinear model for turbulent momentum transport in tokamaks with flow shear and plasma shaping

Abstract:In tokamak experiments, sufficiently strong $E\times B$ flow shear reduces turbulent transport, thereby improving the prospects for fusion power plants. It is therefore of great importance to efficiently explore parameter space to find where strong plasma flow can be achieved. To this end, we propose a new, physically motivated quasi-linear model for estimating momentum transport from turbulence in the presence of toroidal flow shear and plasma shaping. The method gives good estimates of momentum transport for up-down asymmetric geometries as well as low magnetic shear and tight aspect ratio. The results are benchmarked with high-fidelity nonlinear GENE simulations, demonstrating that it provides a fast and accurate estimate of momentum transport.

On the effect of flux-surface shaping on trapped-electron modes in quasi-helically symmetric stellarators

Abstract:Using a novel optimization procedure it has been shown that the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX) stellarator can be optimized for reduced trapped-electron-mode (TEM) instability [M.J.~Gerard et al., \textit{Nucl.~Fusion} \textbf{63} (2023) 056004]. Presently, with a set of 563 experimental candidate configurations, gyrokinetic simulations are performed to investigate the efficacy of available energy $E_\mathrm{A}$, quasi-helical symmetry, and flux-surface shaping parameters as metrics for TEM stabilization. It is found that lower values of $E_\mathrm{A}$ correlate with reduced growth rates, but only when separate flux-surface shaping regimes are considered. Moreover, configurations with improved quasi-helical symmetry demonstrate a similar reduction in growth rates and less scatter compared to $E_\mathrm{A}$. Regarding flux-surface shaping, a set of helical shaping parameters is introduced that show increased elongation is strongly correlated with reduced TEM growth rates, however, only when the quasi-helical symmetry is preserved. Using a newly derived velocity-space-averaged TEM resonance operator, these trends are analyzed to provide insights into the physical mechanism of the observed stabilization. For elongation, stabilization is attributed to geometric effects that reduce the destabilizing particle drifts across the magnetic field. Regarding quasi-helical symmetry, the TEM resonance in the maximally resonant trapping well is shown to increase as the quasi-helical symmetry is broken, and breaking quasi-helical symmetry increases the prevalence of highly resonant trapping wells. While these results demonstrate the limitations of using any single metric as a linear TEM proxy, it is shown that quasi-helical symmetry and plasma elongation are highly effective metrics for reducing TEM growth rates in helical equilibria.

Abstract:In this work, we generalise linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability theory to include equilibrium pressure anisotropy in the fluid part of the analysis. A novel 'single-adiabatic' (SA) fluid closure is presented which is complementary to the usual 'double-adiabatic' (CGL) model and has the advantage of naturally reproducing exactly the MHD spectrum in the isotropic limit. As with MHD and CGL, the SA model neglects the anisotropic perturbed pressure and thus loses non-local fast-particle stabilisation present in the kinetic approach. Another interesting aspect of this new approach is that the stabilising terms appear naturally as separate viscous corrections leaving the isotropic SA closure unchanged. After verifying the self-consistency of the SA model, we re-derive the projected linear MHD set of equations required for stability analysis of tokamaks in the MISHKA code. The cylindrical wave equation is derived analytically as done previously in the spectral theory of MHD and clear predictions are made for the modification to fast-magnetosonic and slow ion sound speeds due to equilibrium anisotropy.

Magneto-Hydrodynamic Simulations of Pedestal Instabilities for Tokamak Plasmas with Different Ion Masses

Abstract:In this bachelor's thesis, isotope effects for pedestal instabilities have been studied based on an ASDEX Upgrade H-Mode scenario. This was done using the JOREK code for extended MHD simulations, including the ion diamagnetic drift and the establishment of ExB flows. Simulations with single toroidal harmonics were performed for multiple times during the build-up of the pedestal, to assess the evolution of the linear stability of modes occurring near the edge. When changing the average ion masses from 2.0 to 2.5 and 3.0, the variations were small, and MHD's momentum equation was shown to be the major cause for them. As a second step, simulations with multiple toroidal harmonics were performed to simulate an Edge Localized Mode (ELM) crash, again comparing between the average ion masses of 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0. The resulting variations of heat and particle losses were compared to JET results. The experimental differences between ion masses could not be reproduced. Together with the fact that the simulations' pedestal for an average ion mass of 2.5 and 3.0 was not matched to the experiment, this indicates that other effects, such as small-scale turbulences, must be included - for example, by adapting the simulations' transport coefficients - to explain the experimental differences.

Abstract:Transient MHD events like edge localized modes (ELMs) or disruptions are a concern for magnetic confinement fusion power plants. Research with the MHD code JOREK towards understanding control of such instabilities is reviewed here. Experimental validation for unmitigated vertical displacement events (VDEs) progressed. The mechanism of vertical force mitigation by impurity injection was identified. Two-way eddy current coupling to CARIDDI was completed. Shattered pellet injection (SPI) was simulated in JET, KSTAR and ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) and ITER. Benign runaway electron (RE) beam termination in JET and ITER was studied. Coupling of kinetic REs to the MHD is ongoing and a virtual RE synchrotron radiation diagnostic was developed. Regarding pedestal physics, regimes devoid of large ELMs in AUG were simulated and predictive JT60-SA simulations are ongoing. For ELM suppression by resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs), AUG, ITER and EAST simulations were performed. A free boundary RMP model was validated against experiments. Evidence for penetrated magnetic islands at the pedestal top based on AUG experiments and simulations was found. Simulations of the naturally ELM-free quiescent H-mode (QH) in AUG and HL-3 show external kink mode formation prevents pedestal build-up towards an ELM within windows of the edge safety factor. With kinetic neutral particles, high field side high density (HFSHD) formation in ITER was simulated and with kinetic impurities, tungsten transport in AUG RMP plasmas was studied. To capture turbulent transport, electro-static full-f PiC models for ion temperature gradient (ITG) and trapped electron modes (TEM) were established and benchmarked. Application to RMP plasmas shows enhanced turbulence in comparison to unperturbed states. Energetic particle (EP) interactions with MHD were studied. Flux-pumping that prevents the safety factor on axis from dropping below unity was simulated. First non-linear stellarator applications include current relaxation in l=2 stellarators, while verification for advanced stellarators progresses.

Abstract:Reduced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are used to study the nonlinear dynamics of external kinks in a quasi-axisymmetric (QA) stellarator with varying fractions of external rotational transform. The large bootstrap currents associated with high beta plasmas may make QA configurations susceptible to low n external modes, limiting their operational space. The violence of the nonlinear dynamics, and, in particular, when these modes lead to a disruption, is not yet understood. In this paper, the nonlinear phase of external kinks in an unstable QA configuration with an edge safety factor below two is simulated. An axisymmetric approximation of this stellarator is constructed in the nonlinear MHD code, JOREK, capturing the influence of the external rotational transform. The use of this approximation for the considered stellarator is validated by comparing the linear dynamics against the linear viscoresistive MHD code, CASTOR3D. The nonlinear dynamics of this stellarator approximation are compared with an equivalent tokamak to understand the influence of a relatively small external rotational transform. While the external rotational transform does have a stabilising influence on the MHD activity, it remains violent. To explore the first order influence of a larger external rotational transform, this equilibrium parameter is artificially increased for the considered stellarator, reducing the effective plasma current. The violence of the kink instability is quantified, and shown to reduce with the increasing external rotational transform. At the same time, the external kink triggers internal modes that exacerbate the loss in confinement during the nonlinear phase, such that it remains large over much of the parameter space. It is only with a significant fraction of external rotational transform that these subsequent modes are stabilised.

Abstract:A more complete non-perturbative magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)-kinetic hybrid formulation is developed by including the perturbed electrostatic potential delta-phi in the particle Lagrangian. The fluid-like counter-parts of the hybrid equations, in the Chew-Goldberger-Low high-frequency limit, are also derived and utilized to test the new toroidal implementation in the MARS-K code. Application of the updated non-perturbative hybrid model for a high-beta spherical tokamak plasma in MAST finds that the perturbed electrostatic potential generally plays a minor role in the n=1 (n is the toroidal mode number) RWM instability. The effect of delta-phi is largely destabilizing, with the growth rate of the instability increased by several (up to 20) percent as compared to the case without including delta-phi. A similar relative change is also obtained for the kinetic-induced resonant field amplification effect at high- in the MAST plasma considered. The updated capability of the MARS-K code allows quantitative exploration of drift kinetic effects on various MHD instabilities and the antenna-driven plasma response where the electrostatic perturbation, coupled to magnetic perturbations, may play important roles.

Constructing stellarators with quasisymmetry to high order

Abstract:A method is given to rapidly compute quasisymmetric stellarator magnetic fields for plasma confinement, without the need to call a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium code inside an optimization iteration. The method is based on direct solution of the equations of magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and quasisymmetry using Garren & Boozer's expansion about the magnetic axis ( Phys Fluids B, vol. 3, 1991, p. 2805), and it is several orders of magnitude faster than the conventional optimization approach. The work here extends the method of Landreman et al. ( J. Plasma Phys. , vol. 85, 2019, 905850103), which was limited to flux surfaces with elliptical cross-section, to higher order in the aspect-ratio expansion. As a result, configurations can be generated with strong shaping that achieve quasisymmetry to high accuracy. Using this construction, we give the first numerical demonstrations of Garren and Boozer's ideal scaling of quasisymmetry breaking with the cube of the inverse aspect ratio. We also demonstrate a strongly non-axisymmetric configuration (vacuum rotational transform ι ) in which symmetry-breaking mode amplitudes throughout a finite volume are , the smallest ever reported. To generate boundary shapes of finite-minor-radius configurations, a careful analysis is given of the effect of substituting a finite minor radius into the near-axis expansion. The approach here can provide analytic insight into the space of possible quasisymmetric stellarator configurations, and it can be used to generate good initial conditions for conventional stellarator optimization.

The effect of shaping on turbulent dynamics in RFP simulations

Abstract:We study the influence of the shape of the plasma container on the dynamics of the Reversed Field Pinch (RFP). The geometries we consider are periodic cylinders with elliptical and circular-shaped cross-sections. Numerical simulations of fully nonlinear visco-resistive magnetohydrodynamics are carried out to illustrate how the plasma dynamics are affected by shaping. It is shown that independent of the plasma shape, the quantity $\beta$, comparing the hydrodynamic pressure to the magnetic pressure, decreases for increasing values of the Lundquist number, but the pressure gradient fluctuations remain roughly constant, when compared to the Lorentz force. Different elliptical shapes of the cross-section of the domain lead to the excitation of different toroidal (or axial) magnetic and dynamic modes. Furthermore, it is found that in a geometry with circular cross-section a significant local poloidal angular momentum is observed, absent in the geometries with elliptical cross-section. Since the confinement is dominantly determined by plasma movement, and the dynamics of the velocity and magnetic field are modified by the modification of the geometry, shaping can thus affect the performance of RFP-devices.

Direct Microstability Optimization of Stellarator Devices

Abstract:Turbulent transport is regarded as one of the key issues in magnetic confinement nuclear fusion, both for tokamaks in stellarators. In this work, we show that a significant decrease in a microstability-based proxy, as opposed to a geometric one, for the turbulent heat flux, namely the quasilinear heat flux, can be obtained in an efficient manner by coupling stellarator optimization with linear gyrokinetic simulations. This is accomplished by computing the quasi-linear heat flux at each step of the optimization process, as well as the deviation from quasisymmetry, and minimizing their sum, leading to a balance between neoclassical and turbulent transport proxy.

Abstract:Twisted magnetic flux ropes are ubiquitous in space and laboratory plasmas, and the merging of such flux ropes through magnetic reconnection is an important mechanism for restructuring magnetic fields and releasing free magnetic energy. The merging-compression scenario is one possible start up scheme for spherical tokamaks, which has been used on the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak MAST. Two current-carrying plasma rings, or flux ropes, approach each other through the mutual attraction of their like currents, and merge, through magnetic reconnection, into a single plasma torus, with substantial plasma heating. 2D resistive MHD and Hall MHD simulations of this process are reported, and new results for the temperature distribution of ions and electrons are presented. A model of the based on relaxation theory is also described, which is now extended to tight aspect ratio geometry. This model allows prediction of the final merged state and the heating. The implications of the relaxation model for heating of the solar corona are also discussed, and a model of the merger of two or more twisted coronal flux ropes is presented, allowing for different senses of twist.

Abstract:The resonant excitations of high-n magnetohydrodynamic instabilities by the energetic ions/alpha particles in tokamaks are theoretically analyzed. Here, n is the toroidal mode number. The magnetohydrodynamic eigenmodes, typically, consist of two-scale structures; one corresponds to the singular (‘‘inertial’’) region and the other the regular (ideal) region. Due to the finite-size orbits, the energetic particle contributions in the singular region are suppressed. Analytical dispersion relations can be derived via the asymptotic matching analysis. The dispersion relations have the generic form of the ‘‘fishbone’’ dispersion relation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 52, 1122 (1984)] and demonstrate, in particular, the existence of two types of modes; that is, the discrete gap mode and the energetic-particle continuum mode. Specific expressions are given for both the kinetic ballooning modes and the toroidal Alfvén modes.
