Abstract:Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) is a compound of global concern because of its persistence and bioaccumulation in the environment. Nevertheless, little is known of the potential for PFOS biodegradation, even though the importance of characterizing the function and activity of microbial populations detected in the environment has been discussed. This study focused on the biodegradation of PFOS by a specific microorganism. Through this study, we have identified the aerobic microorganism for the specific decomposition of PFOS from wastewater treatment sludge, as a well-known sink for environmental PFOS. This species was Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain HJ4 with a 99% similarity, a mesophilic rod type bacteria (30-37°C). A pH range of 7-9 was determined to be optimal for the growth of strain HJ4. In this study approximately 67% over a range of concentrations (1400-1800μgL(-)(1)) for PFOS was biologically decomposed by P. aeruginosa after 48h incubation. This result is reported here for the first time, which strongly pertains to the efficient biodegradation of PFOS. Therefore, our study is considered a major advancement in sustainable PFOS treatment.

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and related perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are emerging contaminants that have been widely applied in consumer and industrial applications for decades. However, PFOS has raised public concern due to its high bioaccumulative character, environmental persistence, and toxicity. Shorter PFASs such as perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and polyfluoroalkyl compounds have been proposed as alternatives to PFOS but it is unclear whether these fluorinated substances pose a risk for public health and the environment. The objective of this research was to investigate the microbial toxicity and the susceptibility to microbial degradation of PFOS and several related fluorinated compounds, i.e., short-chain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl sulfonic and carboxylic acids. None of the compounds tested were toxic to the methanogenic activity of anaerobic wastewater sludge even at very high concentrations (up to 500 mg L-1). All PFASs evaluated were highly resistant to microbial degradation. PFOS was not reductively dehalogenated by the anaerobic microbial consortium even after very long periods of incubation (3.4 years). Similarly, the tested short chain perfluoroalkyl substances (i.e., PFBS and trifluoroacetic acid) and a polyfluoroalkyl PFOS analogue, 6 : 2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (FTSA) were also resistant to anaerobic biodegradation. Likewise, no conclusive evidence of microbial degradation was observed under aerobic conditions for any of the short-chain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids tested after 32 weeks of incubation. Collectively, these results indicate that PFOS and its alternatives such as short chain perfluoroalkyl sulfonates and carboxylates and their polyfluorinated homologues are highly resistant to microbial degradation.

Abstract:Ultrasound (US) can degrade per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by the cavitation or pyrolysis effect. In this study, we find that the US equipment typically used in a common laboratory, such as 20 kHz and 43 kHz for cleaning or homogenisation, can degrade PFAS, although the process is slow (with approximately 14.6% and 20.1% defluorination after 6 h, respectively). To accelerate the degradation process, a dual-frequency US is combined with persulfate (PS) to synergistically degrade PFAS in water and soil. Typical PFAS including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (6:2 FTS) are used to evaluate the degradation performance of dual-frequency US/PS in water. After 6 h of degradation, the defluorination percentage is, from highest to lowest, PFOA (100 +/- 1.2%) > 6:2 FTS (86.9 +/- 0.9%) > PFOS (46.5 +/- 1.0%). Interestingly, the dual-frequency US/PS process can also efficiently degrade PFAS in the contaminated soil, with a 62-71% degradation of 14 PFAS (28 is the maximum number of PFAS that can be quantitatively monitored), representing an encouraging progress. Finally, the degradation pathways and kinetics of PFOA are studied by monitoring the degradation intermediates, and by indicating the combination of the dual-frequency US/PS is not simply addition with each other, but with a synergistic effect of degradation.
Recent trends in degradation strategies of PFOA/PFOS substitutes

Abstract:The global elimination and restriction of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), respectively, have urged manufacturers to shift production to their substitutes which still pose threat to the environment with their bioaccumulation, toxicity and migration issues. In this context, efficient technologies and systematic mechanistic studies on the degradation of PFOA/PFOS substitutes are highly desirable. In this review, we summarize the progress in degrading PFOA/PFOS substitutes, including four kinds of mainstream methods. The pros and cons of the present technologies are analyzed, which renders the discussion of future prospects on rational optimizations. Additional discussion is made on the differences in the degradation of various kinds of substitutes, which is compared to the PFOA/PFOS and derives designing principles for more degradable F-containing compounds.
Pathophysiology of Brain Iron

Abstract:Introduction: The role of iron stored in the human brain has been studied for more than 120 years. As described by Koeppen a German researcher, S. S. Zaleski, reported in 1886 on the presence of a remarkable level of iron present in the human brain. Working with a single autopsied brain he made several observations that have stood the test of time: (i) the majority of the iron was not present as inorganic iron salts such as iron chloride, but was bound to organic molecules, (ii) unlike in the blood, the iron was not bound to hemoglobin, (iii) the iron was predominately in the ferric not the ferrous oxidation state and (iv) the iron was more concentrated in the gray matter rather than the white matter of the brain. In subsequent decades this work was confirmed and extended, particularly by the German pathologist Hugo Spatz. He stained brain tissue by immersing it in hydrochloric acid followed by potassium ferrocyanide (Perls' stain or the Prussian Blue stain) to produce bright blue precipitates in brain regions with high ferric iron concentrations. Using brains from normal subjects he demonstrated strong concentrations of ferric iron in the deep brain nuclei of the extrapyramidal motor system including the globus pallidus, the caudate nucleus, the red nucleus, the dentate nucleus and the substantia nigra. Later studies revealed that iron concentrations with a specific pattern of distribution are present in all normal brains. Iron deposits are particularly prominent in the deep brain nuclei (globus pallidus, putamen, caudate, substantia nigra, red nucleus, dentate nucleus) but are found in the white matter and cortex as well. These deposits are minimal at birth and gradually increase over the first three decades of life after which they tend to plateau. The role of these iron deposits in brain function is not yet entirely clear. One influential hypothesis has linked them to the process of myelination of the white matter tracts. Following the introduction of high-field (1.5 tesla) MRI whole-body imaging n the early 1980s, brain iron research entered a new era when B. P Drayer and his colleagues reported that T2-weighted MR images showed markedly decreased signal intensities (hypointensities) in the same brain regions that had previously been identified in autopsy studies as having high iron concentrations. It was soon demonstrated that this iron-dependent contrast mechanism became more prominent at higher field strengths. The availability of high-field MRI has made it possible to study brain iron non-invasively in living human subjects and has greatly expanded the knowledge of its role in brain physiology and pathology. In recent years brain iron has become a very active area of neuroscience research. Searching the PubMed database for the year 2008 returns 342 papers containing the phrase 'brain iron.' Therefore, at the present time there is well over one paper being published in this area each working day. MRI studies are partly responsible for this high level of research activity, but an equal, or greater activity is currently present in the fields of iron biochemistry and cellular biology. Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), one of the most frequently detected per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occurring in soil, surface water, and groundwater near sites contaminated with aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), has proven to be recalcitrant to many destructive remedies, including chemical oxidation. We investigated the potential to utilize microbially mediated reduction (bioreduction) to degrade PFOS and other PFAS through addition of a known dehalogenating culture, WBC-2, to soil obtained from an AFFF-contaminated site. A substantial decrease in total mass of PFOS (soil and water) was observed in microcosms amended with WBC-2 and chlorinated volatile organic compound (cVOC) co-contaminants — 46.4 ± 11.0 % removal of PFOS over the 45-day experiment. In contrast, perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS) concentrations did not decrease in the same microcosms. The low or non-detectable concentrations of potential metabolites in full PFAS analyses, including after application of the total oxidizable precursor assay, indicated that defluorination occurred to non-fluorinated compounds or ultrashort-chain PFAS. Nevertheless, additional research on the metabolites and degradation pathways is needed. Population abundances of known dehalorespirers did not change with PFOS removal during the experiment, making their association with PFOS removal unclear. An increased abundance of sulfate reducers in the genus Desulfosporosinus (Firmicutes) and Sulfurospirillum (Campilobacterota) was observed with PFOS removal, most likely linked to initiation of biodegradation by desulfonation. These results have important implications for development of in situ bioremediation methods for PFAS and advancing knowledge of natural attenuation processes.

Abstract:As a new kind of persistent organic pollutants, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has become a research spot of environmental science and toxicology. Its impacts on ecological environment should be deeply studied. In this paper, standard contact filter paper test of OECD, artificial soil test, and natural soil test were adopted to study the effects of PFOS on the acute lethality and avoidance behavior of earthworm. The results showed that the acute toxicity of PFOS on earthworm was related to the toxicant exposure time and concentration. The LC50, 48 h in filter paper test, LC50,14 d in artificial soil test, and LC50, 14 d in natural soil test were 13.64 microg x cm(-2), 955.28 mg x kg(-1), and 542.08 mg x kg(-1), respectively. At the maximum test concentration of 160 mg x kg(-1), the earthworm in artificial soil and natural soil showed significant avoidance behavior, which proved that earthworm could perceive and avoid the soil contaminated by a higher concentration of PFOS. To assess PFOS-contaminated soils, the avoidance endpoint was more sensitive than the mortality endpoint. PFOS had higher acute toxicity on earthworm in natural soil than in artificial soil. Meanwhile, more significant avoidance reaction was observed in natural soil than in artificial soil at the same concentrations of PFOS.
First Assessment on Degradability of Sodium P-Perfluorous Nonenoxybenzene Sulfonate (OBS), a High Volume Alternative to Perfluorooctane Sulfonate in Fire-Fighting Foams and Oil Production Agents in China

Abstract:Sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) is widely used in China as fire-fighting foam co-formulant and oil production agent, because it is an economical alternative to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), classified as persistent organic pollutant by the Stockholm Convention. Such chemical very likely possesses toxicological and bioaccumulative characteristics that are similar to PFOS and many other perfluorinated compounds. However, in this first report we demonstrate that OBS, in spite of its non-readily biodegradability, can be decomposed by UV/H2O2 or even sole UV (254 nm) system (contrary to PFOS). More than 96% OBS is degraded in aqueous solution within 20 minutes by both methods thanks to its peculiar molecular structure. Yet, after 2 h reaction UV/H2O2 gives 99% sulfate recovery, while in UV system only 61% sulfate is detected; fluoride recovery was less than 16% for both treatments. Such results, corroborated by intermediate identification, highlight that UV/H2O2 system can effectively destroy the OBS sulfonated aromatic moiety. On contrary, it remains intact in several products of the UV treatment, raising a concern on their potential toxicity. Such results demonstrate OBS better degradability and treatability, compared to other perfluorinated chemicals, and suggest that it might be biodegraded on long term. Moreover, these findings may be of help for a more environmentally friendly eco-design of other fluorinated alternatives.
Electrochemical degradation of PFOA and its common alternatives: Assessment of key parameters, roles of active species, and transformation pathway

Abstract:This study investigates an electrochemical approach for the treatment of water polluted with per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), looking at the impact of different variables, contributions from generated radicals, and degradability of different structures of PFAS. Results obtained from a central composite design (CCD) showed the importance of mass transfer, related to the stirring speed, and the amount of charge passed through the electrodes, related to the current density on decomposition rate of PFOA. The CCD informed optimized operating conditions which we then used to study the impact of solution conditions. Acidic condition, high temperature, and low initial concentration of PFOA accelerated the degradation kinetic, while DO had a negligible effect. The impact of electrolyte concentration depended on the initial concentration of PFOA. At low initial PFOA dosage (0.2 mg L-1), the rate constant increased considerably from 0.079 ± 0.001 to 0.259 ± 0.019 min-1 when sulfate increased from 0.1% to 10%, likely due to the production of SO4•-. However, at higher initial PFOA dosage (20 mg L-1), the rate constant decreased slightly from 0.019 ± 0.001 to 0.015 ± 0.000 min-1, possibly due to the occupation of active anode sites by excess amount of sulfate. SO4•- and •OH played important roles in decomposition and defluorination of PFOA, respectively. PFOA oxidation was initiated by one electron transfer to the anode or SO4•-, undergoing Kolbe decarboxylation where yielded perfluoroalkyl radical followed three reaction pathways with •OH, O2 and/or H2O. PFAS electrooxidation depended on the chemical structures where the decomposition rate constants (min-1) were in the order of 6:2 FTCA (0.031) > PFOA (0.019) > GenX (0.013) > PFBA (0.008). PFBA with a shorter chain length and GenX with -CF3 branching had slower decomposition than PFOA. While presence of C-H bonds makes 6:2 FTCA susceptible to the attack of •OH accelerating its decomposition kinetic. Conducting experiments in mixed solution of all studied PFAS and in natural water showed that the co-presence of PFAS and other water constituents (organic and inorganic matters) had adverse effects on PFAS decomposition efficiency.
The untold story of PFAS alternatives: Insights into the occurrence, ecotoxicological impacts, and removal strategies in the aquatic environment

Abstract:Due to increasing regulations on the production and consumption of legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the global use of PFAS substitutes increased tremendously, posing serious environmental risks owing to their bioaccumulation, toxicity, and lack of removal strategies. This review summarized the spatial distribution of alternative PFAS and their ecological risks in global freshwater and marine ecosystems. Further, toxicological effects of novel PFAS in various freshwater and marine species were highlighted. Moreover, degradation mechanisms for alternative PFAS removal from aquatic environments were compared and discussed. The spatial distribution showed that 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 CI-PFAES, also known as F-53B) was the most dominant emerging PFAS found in freshwater. Additionally, the highest levels of PFBS and PFBA were observed in marine waters (West Pacific Ocean). Moreover, short-chain PFAS exhibited higher concentrations than long-chain congeners. The ecological risk quotients (RQs) for phytoplankton were relatively higher >1 than invertebrates, indicating a higher risk for freshwater phytoplankton species. Similarly, in marine water, the majority of PFAS substitutes exhibited negligible risk for invertebrates and fish, and posed elevated risks for phytoplanktons. Reviewed studies showed that alternative PFAS undergo bioaccumulation and cause deleterious effects such as oxidative stress, hepatoxicity, neurotoxicity, histopathological alterations, behavioral and growth abnormalities, reproductive toxicity and metabolism defects in freshwater and marine species. Regarding PFAS treatment methods, photodegradation, photocatalysis, and adsorption showed promising degradation approaches with efficiencies as high as 90%. Finally, research gaps and future perspectives for alternative PFAS toxicological implications and their removal were offered.

Abstract:With the wide application as an alternative for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) has been frequently detected in the aquatic environment. However, the aquatic toxicity of PFBS is still poorly understood. The present work studied the aquatic toxicity of PFBS using freshwater algae Scenedesmus obliquus (S. obliquus) as indicator, and the toxicity of PFOS was also examined for comparison. The results showed that PFBS exhibited much lower toxicity to S. obliquus than PFOS. The EC50 value was higher than 1800 mg L 1 after 7 days of exposure to PFBS. By contrast, a much lower EC50 value of 136.69 mg L 1 was obtained for PFOS. Photosynthetic efficiency analyzed by chlorophyll fluorescence also verified that PFOS induced a higher toxic effect on the algae than PFBS. The malondialdehyde, catalase and superoxide dismutase results indicate that PFOS exposure led to the accumulation of ROS, which caused oxidative damage to the algae, thereby resulting in the inhibition in the growth and photosynthesis of the algae. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis indicates that the significant down-regulation of key genes related to photosynthesis induced by PFOS was the fundamental mechanism for the inhibition in photosynthetic efficiency and biomass growth of S. obliquus.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES This study attempts to demonstrate a calculation of the occupational lung cancer burden using economically active men in Sweden as an example. METHODS Estimates were calculated using Swedish register data on occupation in 1970, lung cancer incidence in 1971-1989, smoking frequencies in 1963, and the formula I = RI0F + I0(1-F), where I is the overall incidence, R is the relative risk associated with a factor (here smoking), F is the fraction of persons at risk (smokers), and I0 is the incidence among those not at risk (nonsmokers). RESULTS Farmers, gardeners, forestry workers, and fishermen had the lowest lung cancer risk (42.1 per 100,000 person-years) and a smoking frequency of 44.7%. Their I0 was 12.6 or 8.4 per 100,000 person-years, taking R for smoking as 6 or 10, respectively. From these I0 estimates, the expected rates for white- and blue-collar workers (smoking frequencies 52.7 and 57.7%, respectively) were 45.8 and 49.1 per 100,000 person-years, as compared with the 22% and 57% higher observed rates, respectively. Weighing these excesses proportionally according to the sizes of the three occupational categories gave, respectively for R equal to 6 and 10, occupation-related excesses of 39% and 32% and population-attributable risks of 28% and 24%. CONCLUSIONS About one-fourth of the lung cancers that occur among economically active Swedish men seem to have been related to occupation. This figure agrees with estimates made by other methods in Nordic countries. Due to interaction, the population-attributable risk from smoking is still high, 73% and 83% at relative risk values of 6 and 10, respectively.
Ultrasonic degradation of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) correlated with sonochemical and sonoluminescence characterisation

Abstract:Sonolysis has been proposed as a promising treatment technology to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from contaminated water. The mechanism of degradation is generally accepted to be high temperature pyrolysis at the bubble surface with dependency upon surface reaction site availability. However, the parametric effects of the ultrasonic system on PFAS degradation are poorly understood, making upscale challenging and leading to less than optimal use of ultrasonic energy. Hence, a thorough understanding of these parametric effects could lead to improved efficiency and commercial viability. Here, reactor characterisation was performed at 44, 400, 500, and 1000 kHz using potassium iodide (KI) dosimetry, sonochemiluminescence (SCL), and sonoluminescence (SL) in water and a solution of potassium salt of PFOS (hereafter, K-PFOS). Then the degradation of K-PFOS (10 mg L-1 in 200 mL solution) was investigated at these four frequencies. At 44 kHz, no PFOS degradation was observed. At 400, 500, and 1000 kHz the amount of degradation was 96.9, 93.8, and 91.2%, respectively, over four hours and was accompanied by stoichiometric fluoride release, indicating mineralisation of the PFOS molecule. Close correlation of PFOS degradation trends with KI dosimetry and SCL intensity was observed, which suggested degradation occurred under similar conditions to these sonochemical processes. At 1000 kHz, where the overall intensity of collapse was significantly reduced (measured by SL), PFOS degradation was not similarly decreased. Discussion is presented that suggests a hydrated electron degradation mechanism for PFOS may occur in ultrasonic conditions. This mechanism is a novel hypothesis in the field of PFAS sonolysis.

Abstract:Although shorter chain homologues and other types of fluorinated chemicals are currently used as alternatives to long-chain perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), their safety information remains unclear and urgently needed. Here, the cytotoxicity of several fluorinated alternatives (i.e., 6:2 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (6:2 FTCA), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA), 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA), and hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) homologues) to human liver HL-7702 cell line were measured and compared with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Their binding mode and affinity to human liver fatty acid binding protein (hL-FABP) were also determined. Compared with PFOA and PFOS, 6:2 Cl-PFESA, HFPO trimer acid (HFPO-TA), HFPO tetramer acid (HFPO-TeA), and 6:2 FTSA showed greater toxic effects on cell viabilities. At low exposure doses, these alternatives induced cell proliferation with similar mechanism which was different from that of PFOA and PFOS. Furthermore, binding affinity to hL-FABP decreased in the order of 6:2 FTCA < 6:2 FTSA < HFPO dimer acid (HFPO-DA) < PFOA < PFOS/6:2 Cl-PFESA/HFPO-TA. Due to their distinctive structure, 6:2 Cl-PFESA and HFPO homologues were bound to the hL-FABP inner pocket with unique binding modes and higher binding energy compared with PFOA and PFOS. This research enhances our understanding of the toxicity of PFAS alternatives during usage and provides useful evidence for the development of new alternatives.

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are a category of persistent, non-degradable pollutants that are widespread in the environment and in humans. They have attracted considerable attention due to their high bioaccumulation, multiple toxicities, long-term stability, and, in particular, their effects on human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need for highly efficient technologies and systematic mechanisms for the degradation of PFOS and PFOA. Therefore, we summarize four mainstream technologies for the degradation of PFOS and PFOA in water and their research progress in this review, namely adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, microbial treatment, and membrane separation. Among them, adsorption technology is the earliest and relatively mature, the advanced oxidation process has relatively high treatment efficiency, there are deep and broad development prospects for microbial treatment in the future, and membrane separation technology can recycle raw materials and help to save resources. Based on the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the existing technologies, the development prospect of reasonable optimization technology is prospected, with a view to providing a practical scientific reference for the research and engineering practice of PFOS and PFOA pollution control in China.

Abstract:This study focused on three of the most studied PFAS molecules, namely perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). They were compared in terms of their adsorption capacity onto graphite intercalated compound (GIC), a low surface area, highly conductive and cheap adsorbent. The adsorption on GIC followed a pseudo second order kinetics and the maximum adsorption capacity using Langmuir was 53.9 μg/g for PFOS, 22.3 μg/g for PFOA and 0.985 μg/g for PFBS due to electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interactions. GIC was added into an electrochemical oxidation reactor and >100 μg/L PFOS was found to be fully degraded (<10 ng/L) leaving degradation by-products such as PFHpS, PFHxS, PFPeS, PFBS, PFOA, PFHxA and PFBA below 100 ng/L after 5 cycles of adsorption onto GIC for 20 min followed by regeneration at 28 mA/cm 2 for 10 min. PFBS was completely removed due to degradation by aqueous electrons on GIC flakes. Up to 98 % PFOA was removed by the process after 3 cycles of adsorption onto GIC for 20 min followed by regeneration at 25 mA/cm 2 for 10 min. When PFBS was spiked individually, only 17 % was removed due to poor adsorption on GIC. There was a drop of 3–40 % by treating PFOS, PFOA and smaller sulfonates in a real water matrix under the same electrochemical conditions (20 mA/cm 2 ), but PFOS and PFOA removal percentage were 95 and 68 % after 20 min at 20 mA/cm 2 .

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a prominent perfluorinated compound commonly found in the environment, known to pose various risks to human health. However, the removal of PFOS presents significant challenges, primarily due to the limited discovery of bacteria capable of effectively degrading PFOS. Moreover, single degradation bacteria often encounter obstacles in individual cultivation and the breakdown of complex pollutants. In contrast, microbial consortia have shown promise in pollutant degradation. This study employed a continuous enrichment method, combined with multiple co-metabolic substrates, to investigate a microbial consortium with the potential for PFOS degradation. By employing this methodology, we effectively identified a microbial consortium that demonstrated the capacity to reduce PFOS when exposed to an optimal concentration of methanol. The consortium predominantly comprised of Hyphomicrobium species (46.7%) along with unclassified microorganisms (53.0%). Over a duration of 20 days, the PFOS concentration exhibited a notable decrease of 56.7% in comparison to the initial level, while considering the exclusion of adsorption effects. Furthermore, by comparing the predicted metabolic pathways of the microbial consortium with the genome of a known chloromethane-degrading bacterium, Hyphomicrobium sp. MC1, using the KEGG database, we observed distinct variations in the metabolic pathways, suggesting the potential role of the unclassified microorganisms. These findings underscore the potential effectiveness of a "top-down" functional microbial screening approach in the degradation of stubborn pollutants.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been identified as the most toxic specie of the family of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs). It has been widely distributed and frequently detected in environmental wastewater. The compound's unique features such as inherent stability, rigidity, and resistance to harsh chemical and thermal conditions, due to its multiple and strong C-F bonds have resulted in its resistance to conventional wastewater remediations. Photolysis and bioremediation methods have been proven to be inefficient in their elimination, hence this article presents intensive literature studies and summarized findings reported on the application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and photocatalytic degradation techniques as the best alternatives for the PFOA elimination from wastewater. Techniques of persulfate, photo-Fenton, electrochemical, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic degradation have been explored and their mechanisms for the degradation and defluorination of the PFOA have been demonstrated. The major advantage of AOPs techniques has been centralized on the generation of active radicals such as sulfate (SO4•-) hydroxyl (•OH). While for the photocatalytic process, photogenerated species (electron (e) and holes (h + vb)) initiated the process. These active radicals and photogenerated species possessed potentiality to attack the PFOA molecule and caused the cleavage of the C-C and C-F bonds, resulting in its efficient degradation. Shorter-chain PFCAs have been identified as the major intermediates detected and the final stage entails its complete mineralization to carbon dioxide (CO2) and fluoride ion (F-). The prospects and challenges associated with the outlined techniques have been highlighted for better understanding of the subject matter for the PFOA elimination from real wastewaters.

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are highly recalcitrant anthropogenic chemicals that are ubiquitously present in the environment and are harmful to humans. Typical water and wastewater treatment processes (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration) are proven to be largely ineffective, while adsorption with granular activated carbon (GAC) has been the chief option to capture them from aqueous sources followed by incineration. However, this process is time-consuming, and produces additional solid waste and air pollution. Treatment methods for PFOS and PFOA generally follow two routes: (1) removal from source and reduce the risk; (2) degradation. Emerging technologies focusing on degradation are critically reviewed in this contribution. Various processes such as bioremediation, electrocoagulation, foam fractionation, sonolysis, photocatalysis, mechanochemical, electrochemical degradation, beams of electron and plasma have been developed and studied in the past decade to address PFAS crisis. The underlying mechanisms of these PFAS degradation methods have been categorized. Two main challenges have been identified, namely complexity in large scale operation and the release of toxic byproducts. Based on the literature survey, we have provided a strength-weakness-opportunity-threat (SWOT) analysis and quantitative rating on their efficiency, environmental impact and technology readiness.
