Abstract:This paper focuses on modeling and control of the omni-directional mobile robot. By analyzing the characteristics of the kinematics of the omni-directional robot equipped four orthogonal-wheels, the designation of robot's motion controller is provided. By introducing the speed controller and feedback control, the accuracy of robot motion was ensured. And the motion control and other assistant functions of the omni-directional robot are implemented by using digital signal processors (DSP) chip TMS320LF2407A as the core controller. The application to real robots shows it effectiveness.

Abstract:This study presents the processes undertaken in the design and implementation of an omni-directional mobile robot using orthogonal wheels. The orthogonal wheel developed consists of ten rollers, achieves not only forward, reverse, left slide, right slide, but also rotation in situ. The mobile robot consists of four orthogonal wheels which independently powered by brushless DC motors. A DC industrial motherboard is adopted in the main controller, which constitutes a NMT network with the communication ports of four motor drivers by an extended CAN card. In the NMT network, the host computer is the CAN node master, and each motor driver is the CAN node slave. The host computer controls each motor's movement, and reads the motor's current, position and speed information through the NMT network in real-time. The experiment shows that the mobile robot can achieve omni-directional movement.

Abstract:In this paper a design off our wheeled omnidirectional vehicle is presented and its kinematic and dynamic model is developed The motion equation of this system is non-linear and hard to deal with in applications where fast trajectory generation is needed with modest computation resource. Therefore a special design that the vehicle's motion equation can be simplified is proposed. With a set of constraints being satisfied, the system is greatly simplified and a near time-optimal bang-bang trajectory can be calculated with great computational efficiency.

Abstract:To real-time control omni-directional robot in dynamic environment,the designation of robot's motion controller was provided. The experiment was tested in Robocup platform and used omni-directional robot as research object. After analyzing the robot motion and the kinematics characteristics of the omni-directional robot with four orthogonal-wheels, the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) speed controller and feedback control were introduced. The motion control of the four-wheel omni-directional robot was implemented by using digital signal processing (DSP) as the kernel of controller, so that the robot motion was ensured. Experiments indicate that the controller is superior in real-time and robustness. In annual Robocup competition, the robot has satisfactory performance in this computationally intensive, dynamic environments.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the motion control and path planning of an omni-directional mobile robot.By analyzing the kinematic and dynamic characteristics of the robot,its motion control model is provided.The model is rationally simplified based on the model equation to reduce the computation cost.The optimal trajectory is generated by using Bang-Bang control.The real-time control effect is realized by combining the trajectory planning and control modeling.Experiment demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Mobile manipulator robots are increasingly vital in industrial and service sectors, serving roles in assembly, inspection, and hazardous environments. The integration of a manipulator with a mobile robot base imposes unique demands on the vehicle's drive system. This paper introduces a three-wheel holonomic omnidirectional robot designed for mobile applications. It explores kinematic equations, electronic integration, and mechanical design for holonomic motion. This platform excels in mobility, capable of simultaneous translation and rotation, facilitating precise multidirectional motion. Its equilateral truncated triangular structure ensures stability, supporting up to 4 kg. With three omnidirectional wheels and DC motors, controlled by EMS 30A H-Bridge and Arduino Mega 2560, it offers an open platform for research and development. This robust platform aligns kinematic calculations with mathematical models, promising efficiency for diverse mobile manipulation robot applications.

Abstract:In the last decades, mobile robotics has become a very interesting research topic in the field of robotics, mainly because of population ageing and the recent pandemic emergency caused by Covid-19. Against this context, the paper presents an overview on wheeled mobile robot (WMR), which have a central role in nowadays scenario. In particular, the paper describes the most commonly adopted locomotion strategies, perception systems, control architectures and navigation approaches. After having analyzed the state of the art, this paper focuses on the kinematics of three omnidirectional platforms: a four mecanum wheels robot (4WD), a three omni wheel platform (3WD) and a two swerve-drive system (2SWD). Through a dimensionless approach, these three platforms are compared to understand how their mobility is affected by the wheel speed limitations that are present in every practical application. This original comparison has not been already presented by the literature and it can be used to improve our understanding of the kinematics of these mobile robots and to guide the selection of the most appropriate locomotion system according to the specific application.

Abstract:This paper presents the design, analysis, and performance evaluation of an omnidirectional transformable wheel-leg robot called OmniWheg. We design a novel mechanism consisting of a separable omni-wheel and 4-bar linkages, allowing the robot to transform between omni-wheeled and legged modes smoothly. In wheeled mode, the robot can move in all directions and efficiently adjust the relative position of its wheels, while it can overcome common obstacles in legged mode, such as stairs and steps. Unlike other articles studying whegs, this implementation with omnidirectional wheels allows the correction of misalignments between right and left wheels before traversing obstacles, which effectively improves the success rate and simplifies the preparation process before the wheel-leg transformation. We describe the design concept, mechanism, and the dynamic characteristic of the wheel-leg structure. We then evaluate its performance in various scenarios, including passing obstacles, climbing steps of different heights, and turning/moving omnidirectionally. Our results confirm that this mobile platform can overcome common indoor obstacles and move flexibly on the flat ground with the new transformable wheel-leg mechanism, while keeping a high degree of stability.

Aggregating Single-wheeled Mobile Robots for Omnidirectional Movements

Abstract:This paper presents a novel modular robot system that can self-reconfigure to achieve omnidirectional movements for collaborative object transportation. Each robotic module is equipped with a steerable omni-wheel for navigation and is shaped as a regular icositetragon with a permanent magnet installed on each corner for stable docking. After aggregating multiple modules and forming a structure that can cage a target object, we have developed an optimization-based method to compute the distribution of all wheels' heading directions, which enables efficient omnidirectional movements of the structure. By implementing a hierarchical controller on our prototyped system in both simulation and experiment, we validated the trajectory tracking performance of an individual module and a team of six modules in multiple navigation and collaborative object transportation settings. The results demonstrate that the proposed system can maintain a stable caging formation and achieve smooth transportation, indicating the effectiveness of our hardware and locomotion designs.

Abstract:Background: Wheel plays an important role in many different areas, such as the wheeled mobile robot which is now widely used in planetary exploration, industrial production, household appliances and training aid appliances. In some occasions, wheeled mobile robot is required to turn in a zero radius, thus various omnidirectional wheels including ball wheel, Mecanum wheel, orthogonal wheel and Rover wheel are proposed by researchers. Objective: To evaluate a wheeled mobile robot, mobility and loading capacity are two factors meanwhile wheel is one of the key factors that makes difference on the mobility and loading capacity of wheeled mobile robot. The purpose of this paper is to study mobility and loading capacity of different kinds of omni-directional wheels. Method: This paper reviews various representative patents, productions and papers related to omnidirectional wheels. Their structures and working principles are introduced, compared and analyzed. Results: Current and future developments of the omni-directional wheels are finally provided and discussed. Conclusion: Developing an omni-directional wheel which can be used in common at anywhere is impractical. It is effective and reasonable to develop modified omni-directional wheels based on above four kinds of wheels to satisfy different requirements for the wheeled mobile robot. Abstract:A The proposed system developed an omnidirectional algorithm to control autonomous mobile robots with three wheels. The implementation system consists of three Planet DC motors with rated power of 80 W for three wheels, three encoders for speed feedback, one encoder for distance feedback, and one digital compass sensor for angle feedback. The main system with an STM32F407 microcontroller is designed for directional control of wheels based the signal received from compass sensor and encoder and then controls three subsystems to adjust the steering speed of each wheel. The sub-system is built to control only one DC motor for each wheel with the built-in proportional integral derivative controller (PID) algorithm by an STM32F103 microcontroller. Furthermore, the directional control algorithm is developed for three omnidirectional wheels and a PID algorithm is designed to control the speed of DC motor for each wheel. From the results the proposed system has the advantages: (1) to auto adjust the angle and position; (2) to erase the sensor for tracking line of the automobile robot; (3) cost-effectiveness and high accuracy

Abstract:Omnidirectional mobile operating robot not only expands the working space of manipulator, but also enhances the function of the omnidirectional vehicle. So, it has wide application prospect. This paper analyses the omnidirectional movement principle of Mecanum wheel, designs an omnidirectional moving vehicle based on Mecanum wheel, and establishes its motion control rules. A manipulator with six degrees of freedom is designed and its kinematic model is established. Simulation platform of omnidirectional mobile operating robot is developed, and the motion trajectory to cover the maximum moment and speed of joints as much as possible is designed. Simulation results show that the movement of omnidirectional vehicle is steady and the vertical fluctuation is small. The predetermined trajectory of manipulator is achieved, the movement of joints is smooth, and the force and energy consumption of each joint are reasonable, which verifies the feasibility of the omnidirectional mobile operating robot.

Abstract:Purpose The mechanical properties between wheel and ground will affect the motion performance of wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot (OMR). MY3 wheel is an omnidirectional wheel. This paper aims to analyze the contact mechanical characteristics between MY3 wheel and ground to improve the motion accuracy of an omnidirectional mobile platform with MY3 wheel (MY3-OMR). Design/methodology/approach This method takes MY3 wheel as the research objective. The normal and tangential contact mechanics model and rolling contact mechanics model of MY3 wheel are established by analyzing the structure of MY3 wheel, and thereby, the slip ratio of MY3 wheel in the process of motion is calculated. The kinematics model of MY3-OMR is optimized by taking the slip ratio as the optimization parameter that aims to improve motion accuracy of MY3-OMR. Findings The correctness of the mechanical analysis and the feasibility of the method are verified by the MY3-OMR prototype. Let MY3-OMR move along the set circular trajectory and square trajectory, and the error between the motion trajectory before and after optimization and the standard trajectory is obtained. It illustrates that the error in the square trajectory is reduced by 1.5%, and the circular trajectory error is reduced by 2%; therefore, the method is effective. Originality/value A method based on contact mechanics is proposed and verified. Through the establishment of wheel-ground contact mechanics model to optimize MY3-OMR kinematics model, and thereby, the motion accuracy of MY3-OMR is improved, which lays a foundation for MY3-OMR engineering application.

Abstract:Modeling and control strategies for a design of an autonomous three wheeled mobile robot with front wheel steer is presented. Although, the three-wheel vehicle design with front wheel steer is common in automotive vehicles used often in public transport, but its advantages in navigation and localization of autonomous vehicles is seldom utilized. We present the system model for such a robotic vehicle. A PID controller for speed control is designed for the model obtained and has been implemented in a digital control framework. The trajectory control framework, which is a challenging task for such a three-wheeled robot has also been presented in the paper. The derived system model has been verified using experimental results obtained for the robot vehicle design. Controller performance and robustness issues have also been discussed briefly.

Abstract:This paper explores two non‐linear control techniques for designing an effective control system for an omnidirectional autonomous mobile robot with four Mecanum wheels. Due to the unique wheel structure and four separate wheels, the robot has non‐linear dynamics and multiple inputs and outputs. This paper explores two non‐linear control techniques for designing an effective control system for an omnidirectional autonomous mobile robot with four Mecanum wheels. Due to the unique wheel structure and four separate wheels, the robot has non‐linear dynamics, multiple inputs and outputs. The first technique uses the state‐dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) to address optimal non‐linear control while considering energy and time constraints. The second technique, using an intermediate variable θ , has expanded the Hamilton‐Jacobi‐Belman equation in terms of the power series. Consequently, these equations are reduced to a set of recursive Lyapunov algebraic equations, leading to a closed‐form solution for solving the non‐linear optimal control problem. Finally, the maneuverability and path‐tracking capability of the robot are examined by highlighting the non‐linear term through numerical simulation.

Abstract:The mobile robot with an orthogonal-wheel assembly has omnidirectional motion ability and simple kinematic model for controller design. However, two sliced spheres that switch upon movement are likely to cause disturbances that act on the wheeled motor robot (WMR)'s body. The purpose of the traditional control for a WMR is high joint control stiffness using odometry, which might worsen the trajectory tracking performance of the WMR with orthogonal-wheel assemblies. This is because the robot's vibration might cause wheel slippage. Thus, the real-time motion states of the WMR body must be obtained to enable the robot controller to suppress such vibration. This paper provides a method with which to estimate the velocities of the WMR using inner sensors. In our proposed method, the real-time velocities of the WMR are estimated using accelerometers and position-measurement sensors. The fused signal is fed into the WMR controller instead of into the odometry feedback signal. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective.

Abstract:Wheeled mobile robots have been receiving continuous attention in various fields because of their stability, efficiency, and simple mechanisms. However, most of them require significantly larger occupied space than humans and have limited maneuverability in the environment for humans, such as crowded corridors, floor thresholds, ramps, and elevators. This letter presents a new wheel-leg mobile robot that combines the legs for changeable support polygon and mecanum wheels for holonomic motion. The robot has a human-like slim shape with 4 wheel-leg mechanisms, each of which has one 2-DOF leg frame and one mecanum wheel. To allow 2-DOF leg motion while maintaining the orientation of the mecanum wheels, a unique parallel link mechanism was devised. In order to achieve agile motion and impact and vibration absorption capability, a back-drivable high payload compound planetary gear was developed. The ground reaction force (GRF) compensation mechanism in each leg reduces the required payload of the actuators. The letter describes the detailed mechanical design of the robot and the actuators. The effectiveness of the proposed robot was verified in various experiments, fast omnidirectional motion test, a climbing test of a single step, and a motion test in the elevator with people.

Abstract:The paper considers the principles of intelligent motion control of mobile robots using the example of omni-wheel modules. The proposed design solution uses components of movement intelligence in any direction, receiving commands from a human operator or above a standing automatic control device, consisting of an angle of movement direction and the required distance of movement. This paper presents an embodiment of using omni-wheels to move a mobile robot over a flat surface. Features of device and application of drive with three omni-wheels in comparison with differential drive are considered. Kinematics, basic principles of motion control formation, hardware and software complex for its implementation are described. There were revealed two alternative methods of organization of drive control in conditions of shortage of low-level hardware resources on the basis of 8-bit microcontroller, their advantages and disadvantages have been analyzed. Process support and materials have been presented that allows realizing the competitive advantages of development while minimizing the cost of components. Features of mobile robot travel route development have been mentioned on the example of competitive practice.

Abstract:Although additive manufacturing is a relatively new technology, it has been widely accepted by industry and academia due to the wide variety of prototypes that can be built. Furthermore, using mobile robots to carry out different tasks allows greater flexibility than using manipulator robots. In that sense, and based on those above, this article focuses on the design and assembly of a multi-configurable mobile robot that is capable of changing from a differential to an omnidirectional configuration. For this purpose, a sequential mechatronic design/control methodology was implemented to obtain an affordable platform via additive manufacturing which is easily scalable and allows the user to change from one configuration to another. As a proof of concept, this change is made manually. Fabrication, construction, and assembly processes for both structures are presented. Then, a hierarchical control law is designed. In this sense and based on Lyapunov's method, a low-level controller is developed to control the angular speed of the wheels to a desired angular speed, and a medium-level controller controls the robot's attitude to follow a desired Cartesian trajectory. Finally, the control strategies are implemented in both prototype configurations, and through experimental results, the theoretical analysis and the construction of the mobile robot are validated.

Abstract:The increasingly complex application environment has raised higher demands on the performance of ground mobile robots in terms of environmental adaptability, autonomous avoidance, and self-rescue. In addition to multi-sensor fusion and control strategies, novel locomotion systems are crucial research directions. Here we propose a novel hybrid locomotion ground mobile robot, called arm-wheel-track robot (AWTR). It combines two locomotion systems, wheeled and tracked locomotion. Two multiple-degree-of-freedom arms are mounted on the front and rear of its chassis. The arms can assist the robot in transforming locomotion modes, surmounting obstacles, fall recovery, etc. Two ultrasonic sensors and a tilt sensor are mounted on it to perceive the environment and self-posture. One of the ultrasonic sensors mounted on the forearm can achieve a more comprehensive perception of the environment ahead with the extra workspace provided by the forearm. We establish the relationship of terrains with sensor data and forearm posture and develop different locomotion strategies for different terrains, so that the robot can classify different terrain and accomplish the corresponding locomotion strategies autonomously. We have built a prototype and conducted experiments on different terrains. The results verified the robot's movement performance, the effectiveness of the terrain perception method and the locomotion strategies for different terrains.
