The trip was a powerful reminder for me of a problem I've confronted before.

Abstract:The effect of pressure on structural and mechanical properties as well as the temperature dependence of thermodynamic properties, such as enthalpies of formation, elastic moduli, anisotropy, heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient et al., of Ni2XAl (X=Sc, Ti, V) Heusler compounds are investigated implementing first-principles calculations. The influence of pressure on lattice parameters decreases as the increase of atomic number X (Sc, Ti, V). The Ni2XAl (X=Sc, Ti, V) show mechanically stable, ductility and anisotropy in 0–50GPa, and appropriate pressure can improve their mechanical properties because the bulk modulus B, shear modulus G, Young's modulus E, G/B and microhardness H almost linearly increase with pressure. The influence of pressure on B, G, E and H gradually decreases as the order of Ni2ScAl>Ni2TiAl>Ni2VAl, while it has an inverse effect on ductility and anisotropy. In addition, the resistance to volume deformation of NiAl alloys can be improved by second-phase strengthening with Ni2VAl and Ni2TiAl precipitates. Finally, the temperature and pressure dependences of bulk modulus, Debye temperature, heat capacity as well as thermal expansion coefficient of these compounds are elucidated using the quasi-harmonic Debye model. It is inverse for the effect of temperature and pressure on thermodynamic parameters.

Abstract:The pressure dependence behaviors of structural and mechanical properties as well as the effect of temperature on thermodynamic properties of Ni-Al ordered intermetallic compounds (i.e. Ni(3)A1, Ni5Al3, NiAl, Ni2Al3 and NiAl3) are investigated in details by implementing first-principles calculations. The calculated lattice parameters, bulk modulus and its pressure derivative are well in agreement with available experimental and theoretical values at zero pressure. All the compounds are mechanically stable with pressure going up to 50 GPa, and the volume change resistance of nickel aluminum alloys can be improved by increasing pressure and Ni concentration. The shear deformation resistance, elastic stiffness and microhardness of nickel aluminum alloys can be strengthened by increasing the content of Ni5Al3 and Ni2Al3, and pressure can also enhance these properties of Ni5Al3, NiAl and Ni2Al3. The ductility of Ni3Al, Ni5Al3 and NiAl can be improved by increasing pressure, while brittle nature turns into ductile nature in 20-30 GPa and 10-20 GPa for Ni2Al3 and NiAl3, respectively. Furthermore, the elastic anisotropy of Ni3Al, Ni5A13, Ni(2)Al3 and NiAl3 enhances with pressure, while NiAl shows few change with pressure increasing. In addition, Ni3Al is the most sensitive to pressure change among considered compounds. Finally, the Debye temperature, linear thermal expansion coefficient and heat capacity of these compounds are calculated using the quasi-harmonic Debye model in pressure ranging from 0 to 50 GPa and temperature ranging from 0 to 1200 K to elucidate the relationships between thermodynamic parameters and temperature under various pressure. Abstract:We report the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature T-c in TlNi2Se2-xSx detected via the ac susceptibility method. The pressure-temperature phase diagram constructed for TlNi2Se2, TlNi2S2, and TlNi2SeS exhibits two unexpected features: (a) a sudden collapse of the superconducting state at moderate pressure for all three compositions and (b) a dome-shaped pressure dependence of T-c for TlNi2SeS. These results point to the nontrivial role of S substitution and its subtle interplay with applied pressure, as well as interesting superconducting properties of the TlNi2Se2-xSx system.
Structural and electronic properties of superconducting Heusler alloy Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$: \textit{Ab initio} approach

Abstract:Using \textit{ab initio} calculation, we investigate systematically the structural and electronic properties of Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.50). Here, projector augmented wave approach (PAW) implemented in the Vienna \textit{ab initio} simulation package (VASP) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation functional has been used. In this article, it is reported that though Ni$_{2}$NbSn and Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.25}$Sn$_{0.75}$ have no structural transformation, Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$ can transform to tetragonal structure from cubic L2$_{1}$ phase. The cubic lattice parameter decreases with Nb doping at Sn sites in off-stoichiometric alloys. The alloys are in paramagnetic phase in all the structures. The hybridization between Ni and Nb 3d states triggers the tetragonal distortion. Due to Nb doping in cubic L2$_{1}$ phase, there is a significant change in total density of states (DOSs) at Fermi energy (E$_{F}$) (N(E$_{F}$)). N(E$_{F}$) increases with increasing Nb doping. But, N(E$_{F}$) decreases during structural transformation of Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$. The superconducting critical temperature (T$_{C}$) also changes with Nb doping in cubic phase and tetragonal distortion because T$_{C}$ very much depends on N(E$_{F}$).

Computational investigation of elastic properties of hypothetical Half-Heusler compounds XNbSn under hydrostatic pressures

Abstract:We investigated the electronic, elastic, and magnetic properties of the hypothetical half- Heusler alloys with Niobium base atom, XNbSn with (X= Cr, Mn, Co, Fe, V) uses the full-potential (linearized) augmented plane-wave and local-orbitals [FP-(L)APW + lo] basis set in the WIEN2K ab-initio package based on density functional theory (DFT). We investigated the elastic constants, Shear modulus, young modulus, and bulk modulus of these alloys under different pressures (0, 20, 40, and 80 GPa). We predicted that CoNbSn behaves as a semiconductor with a direct energy gap of 0.99 eV, while the other half- Heusler alloys show a metallic behavior. CoNbSn keeps its semiconductor behavior under higher pressures up to 80 GPa. Both of VNbSn and CrNbSn have a high value of magnetic moments of 2.158 and 3.002 μB respectively. All XNbSn alloys are stable mechanically at different pressures according to the Born-Huang conditions. CoNbSn, FeNbSn, CrNbSn, and MnNbSn behave as a ductile material at ambient pressure.

Abstract:Nb3Al and Nb3Sn are important A15 compounds due to their good superconducting properties in high magnetic field. The strain coming from multiple sources would result in the degradation of superconducting performance for both of them. Extensive experimental studies have found that Nb3Sn has higher strain sensitivity than Nb3Al. However, most of the previous theoretical works focus on the effect of compressive hydrostatic pressure, which doesn’t reflect the actual working condition. In this work, first-principles calculations were done to investigate the mechanical behaviors of the two materials under the three crystallographic uniaxial tensile loadings. Determined from the stress-strain relations, the theoretical strength of Nb3Al is found to be slightly higher than that of Nb3Sn, which is validated by the energy-strain curve and the corresponding phonon instability. Electronic analyses show that the property difference of the two materials is attributed to their different bonding states and strain sensitivities. The present work unveils why the superconductivity of Nb3Sn is more sensitive to strain than Nb3Al on the microscopic level.
First-principles study of superconducting transition temperature of niobium and vanadium as a function of pressure

Abstract:Ultra-high pressure has recently led to the observation of high Tc superconductors. The exploration of superconducting properties under high pressure conditions offers valuable insights into the fundamental mechanisms governing superconductivity and opens avenues for the synthesis of novel materials with enhanced superconducting properties. In this study, the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, for niobium and vanadium has been investigated to maximum pressures of 250.0 and 70.0 GPa, respectively. Density functional theory and density functional perturbation theory were used to undertake first-principles computations to investigate the variations of superconducting properties under pressure. For both the metals niobium (Nb) and vanadium (V), we observed that the density of states at the Fermi level decreased, while the overall phonon frequency generally increased with pressure. For Nb, we find that the electron–phonon coupling constant (λ) and the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decrease steadily with pressure; however, for V, we find that λ and Tc decrease smoothly up to 26.0 GPa, and then gradually increase to 70.0 GPa pressure. The observed phonon spectrum nature for both Nb and V is in good agreement with the neutron scattering approach’s output.

Absence of phonon-mediated superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure

Abstract:A recent experimental study announced the emergence of superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure, with the highest observed superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) reaching approximately 80 K beyond 14 GPa. While extensive studies have been devoted to the electronic correlations and potential superconducting pairing mechanisms, there lack investigations into the phonon properties and electron phonon coupling. Using density functional theory in conjunction with Wannier interpolation techniques, we study the phonon properties and electron phonon interactions in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under 29.5 GPa. Our findings reveal that the electron phonon coupling is insufficient to solely explain the observed high superconducting $T_c$ $\sim$ 80 K in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. And the calculated strong Fermi surface nesting may explain the experimental observed charge density wave transition in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. Our calculations substantiate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ is an unconventional superconductor.

Prediction of s^{±}-Wave Superconductivity Enhanced by Electronic Doping in Trilayer Nickelates La_{4}Ni_{3}O_{10} under Pressure

Abstract:Motivated by the recently reported signatures of superconductivity in trilayer La_{4}Ni_{3}O_{10} under pressure, we comprehensively study this system using ab initio and random-phase approximation techniques. Without electronic interactions, the Ni d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}} orbitals show a bonding-antibonding and nonbonding splitting behavior via the O p_{z} orbitals inducing a "trimer" lattice in La_{4}Ni_{3}O_{10}, analogous to the dimers of La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}. The Fermi surface consists of three electron sheets with mixed e_{g} orbitals, and a hole and an electron pocket made up of the d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}} orbital, suggesting a Ni two-orbital minimum model. In addition, we find that superconducting pairing is induced in the s^{±}-wave channel due to partial nesting between the M=(π,π) centered pockets and portions of the Fermi surface centered at the Γ=(0,0) point. With changing electronic density n, the s^{±} instability remains leading and its pairing strength shows a domelike behavior with a maximum around n=4.2 (∼6.7% electron doping). The superconducting instability disappears at the same electronic density as that in the new 1313 stacking La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}, correlated with the vanishing of the hole pocket that arises from the trilayer sublattice, suggesting that the high-T_{c} superconductivity of La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7} does not originate from a trilayer and monolayer structure. Furthermore, we confirm the experimentally proposed spin state in La_{4}Ni_{3}O_{10} with an in-plane (π, π) order and antiferromagnetic coupling between the top and bottom Ni layers, and spin zero in the middle layer.

Abstract:We conducted a systematic high-pressure study on the Nb-Sn system using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. The USPEX software package was used to investigate the crystal structure of Nb-Sn alloys under pressures ranging from 0 to 30 GPa. As a result, five new ground-state structures for the Nb-Sn alloys were predicted: Pm -3_Nb 7 Sn, I 4/ mmm_ Nb 2 Sn, P 6 4 22_NbSn 2 , P 4/ nmm _NbSn 3 and Cmcm _NbSn 3 . According to our calculated results, it is found that eight compounds are thermodynamically and dynamically stable in Nb-Sn system under different pressures. These compounds are: Pm -3_Nb 7 Sn, Pm -3 n _Nb 3 Sn(A15), Fddd _NbSn 2 , I 4/ mmm _Nb 2 Sn, P 6 2 22_NbSn 2 , P 6 4 22_NbSn 2 , P 4/ nmm _NbSn 3 , and Cmcm _NbSn 3 . The calculations of electronic properties indicate that structures exhibit metallic behavior. In addition, the superconducting transition temperatures of Pm -3_Nb 7 Sn at atmospheric pressure is ∼5.15 K, and our results also suggest that the superconducting properties arises mainly from the coupling between Nb-4 d electrons and phonons near the Fermi level.

Abstract:A15-type compound \ch{Nb3Sn} has attracted much attention due to its relatively high critical temperature and critical field of superconductivity, making it a leading material for superconducting applications. In this study, we investigate the structural instability and superconductivity of \ch{Nb3Sn} under hydrostatic pressure using first-principles calculations. We perform electronic property, phonon dispersion, electron-phonon coupling and the superconducting gap for \ch{Nb3Sn} at pressure ranging form ambient to 9 GPa. Our results show that a significant electron density presences near the Fermi level due to the van Hove singularity, indicating the strong electron-phonon coupling. The phonon dispersion of \ch{Nb3Sn} exhibits Kohn anomalies at three different wave vectors at a lower temperature. Moreover, above a pressure of 6 GPa, the charge density wave (CDW) instability disappeared, suggesting that pressure inhibits the CDW phase. The superconducting temperature is predicted to be K at ambition condition, which is well consistent with the experimental results. We find that both the CDW and superconducting orders response to pressure, with their transition temperatures decreasing as pressure increases below 6 GPa. Above 6 GPa, the superconducting transition temperature increases slowly with pressure. Our results suggest that the instability in \ch{Nb3Sn} is driven by the softening of phonon modes due to the CDW caused by strong electron-phonon coupling. Therefore, the CDW phase and superconducting phase of \ch{Nb3Sn} coexist at low pressure.

Cooperation between electron-phonon coupling and electronic interaction in bilayer nickelates La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

Abstract:The recent observation of high-T$_c$ superconductivity in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure has garnered significant interests. While researches have predominantly focused on the role of electron-electron interactions in the superconducting mechanism, the impact of electron-phonon coupling (EPC) has remained elusive. In this work, we perform first-principles calculations to study the phonon spectrum and electron-phonon coupling within La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure and explore of the interplay between EPC and electronic interactions on the superconductivity by employing functional renormalization group approach. Our calculations reveal that EPC alone is insufficient to trigger superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure. We identify unique out-of-plane and in-plane breathing phonon modes which selectively couple with the Ni $d_{z^2}$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, showcasing an orbital-selective EPC. Within the bilayer two-orbital model, it is revealed that solely electronic interactions foster $s_{\pm}$-wave pairing characterized by notable frustration in the band space, leading to a low transition temperature. Remarkably, we find that this out-of-plane EPC can act in concert with electronic interactions to promote the onsite and interlayer pairing in the $d_{z^2}$ orbital, partially releasing the pairing frustration and thus elevating T$_c$. In contrast, the inclusion of in-plane EPC only marginally affects the superconductivity, distinct from the cuprates. Potential experimental implications in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ are also discussed.

Superconductivity in nickelate and cuprate superconductors with strong bilayer coupling

Abstract:The discovery of superconductivity at 80 K under high pressure in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ presents the groundbreaking confirmation that high-$T_c$ superconductivity is a property of strongly correlated materials beyond cuprates. We use density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the band structure of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure to verify that the low-energy bands are composed almost exclusively of Ni 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and O 2$p$ orbitals. We deduce that the Ni 3$d_{z^2}$ orbitals are essentially decoupled by the geometry of the high-pressure structure and by the effect of the Ni Hund coupling being strongly suppressed, which results from the enhanced interlayer antiferromagnetic interaction between $d_{z^2}$ orbitals and the strong intralayer hybridization of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals with O 2$p$. By introducing a tight-binding model for the Fermi surfaces and low-energy dispersions, we arrive at a bilayer $t$-$t_\perp$-$J$ model with strong interlayer hopping, which we show is a framework unifying La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ with cuprate materials possessing similar band structures, particularly the compounds La$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_6$, Pb$_2$Sr$_2$YCu$_3$O$_8$, and EuSr$_2$Cu$_2$NbO$_8$. We use a renormalized mean-field theory to show that these systems should have ($d$+$is$)-wave superconductivity, with a dominant $d$-wave component and the high $T_c$ driven by the near-optimally doped $\beta$ band, while the $\alpha$ band adds an $s$-wave component that should lead to clear experimental signatures.

Abstract:We report the discovery of superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric compounds HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl by measuring their electrical transport and thermodynamic properties. HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, and ZrNiGa crystallize in the ZrNiAl-type crystal structure, whereas HfPtAl crystallizes in the HfRhSn-type crystal structure. Superconducting transitions for HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl are observed at 1.0 K, 1.0 K, 0.42 K, and 0.58 K, respectively. Using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model, the zero-temperature upper critical fields mu H-0(c2)(0) were estimated to be 0.58 T, 0.24 T, 0.08 T, and 0.34 T for HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl, respectively. The observed jump in electronic heat capacity (Delta C-e/gamma T) across the superconducting transition is 1.3, 1.3, and 1.2 for HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, and HfPtAl, respectively. After the inclusion of the spin-orbit coupling in the band structure calculations, a total of six bands for ZrNiAl, HfPtAl, and ZrNiGa, and eight bands for HfNiAl were found to cross the Fermi level. Spin-orbit coupling induced maximum splitting (Delta E-ASOC/k(B)T(c)) of the electronic bands near the Fermi level was found to be 1697, 517, 1138, and 4230 for HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl, respectively. Large variation of the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC) among these compounds provides a great opportunity to study the effects of ASOC on the superconducting pairing states.
Prediction of High‐Temperature Superconductivity in Monolayer h‐ AlH 2 at Ambient Pressure

Abstract:Although hydrides such as LaH 10 have been experimentally confirmed to possess high superconducting critical temperature ( T c ) of 250‐260 K under 170‐200 GPa, it is still a tough challenge to be applied. It is highly anticipated to find hydride superconductors with relatively high T c at low or ambient pressure. Reducing the dimensionality of materials can induce unexpected properties that are distinct from their bulk counterparts, whether it can modulate the superconducting properties deserves further investigation. Here, we theoretically predict a new two‐dimensional (2D) monolayer aluminum hydride h‐ AlH 2 under ambient pressure based on the first‐principles calculations. Since the electronic structures of h‐ AlH 2 reveal the metallicity, the electron‐phonon coupling (EPC) and possible phonon‐mediated superconductivity have been investigated. Based on the isotropic Eliashberg equation, the calculated EPC constant λ of h‐ AlH 2 is 1.16, and the T c is up to 42.6 K. The EPC mainly originates from the coupling between electrons of Al‐s, p x , p y , and H‐s orbitals and the in‐plane vibration modes of H atoms. Especially, the T c can be enhanced to 63.7 K by applying 3% biaxial tensile strain. Thus, the predicted h‐ AlH 2 provides a new platform for finding hydride superconductors in low‐dimensional materials at ambient pressure. This article is protected by copyright. Pressure dependence of the Curie temperature in Ni2MnSn Heusler alloy: A first-principles study

Abstract:The pressure dependence of electronic structure, exchange interactions and Curie temperature in ferromagnetic Heusler alloy Ni2MnSn has been studied theoretically within the framework of the density-functional theory. The calculation of the exchange parameters is based on the frozen--magnon approach. The Curie temperature, Tc, is calculated within the mean-field approximation by solving the matrix equation for a multi-sublattice system. In agrement with experiment the Curie temperature increased from 362K at ambient pressure to 396 at 12 GPa. Extending the variation of the lattice parameter beyond the range studied experimentally we obtained non-monotonous pressure dependence of the Curie temperature and metamagnetic transition. We relate the theoretical dependence of Tc on the lattice constant to the corresponding dependence predicted by the empirical interaction curve. The Mn-Ni atomic interchange observed experimentally is simulated to study its influence on the Curie temperature.

Abstract:This paper presents a theoretical study of structural, mechanical, electronic, vibrational and superconducting properties of full Heusler compounds Ni 2 ZrZ ( Z= Al and Ga ) using the norm conserving pseudo potential within the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Density Functional Perturbation Theory ( DFPT) . Our finding reveal that the non-magnetic L2 1 phase structure is energetically more stable for both compounds. The band structure shows that these compounds have a metallic behavior with a saddle point (Van Hove Singularity) at L -point. Elastic and vibrational properties analysis confirm the mechanical and dynamical stability of our studied compounds. The Ni 2 ZrAl and Ni 2 ZrGa exhibit BCS weak coupling superconductivity with critical temperatures of 1.78 K and 2.68 K, respectively. The study extends to explore the impact of Hf concentrations, providing valuable insights into the superconducting properties of Ni 2 Zr (1-x) Hf x Ga alloys.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent observation of superconductivity with $T_c \sim 80$ K in pressurized La3Ni2O7 [Nature 621, 493 (2023)], we explore the structural and electronic properties in A3Ni2O7 bilayer nickelates (A=La-Lu, Y, Sc) as a function of hydrostatic pressure (0-150 GPa) from first principles including a Coulomb repulsion term. At $\sim 20$ GPa, we observe an orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transition in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ at variance with recent x-ray diffraction data, which points to so-far unresolved complexities at the onset of superconductivity, e.g., charge doping by variations in the oxygen stoichiometry. We compile a structural phase diagram with particular emphasis on the $b/a$ ratio, octahedral anisotropy, and octahedral rotations. Intriguingly, chemical and external pressure emerge as two distinct and counteracting control parameters. We find unexpected correlations between $T_c$ and the in-plane Ni-O-Ni bond angles for La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. Moreover, two novel structural phases with significant $c^+$ octahedral rotations and in-plane bond disproportionations are uncovered for A=Nd-Lu, Y, Sc that exhibit a surprising pressure-driven electronic reconstruction in the Ni $e_g$ manifold. By disentangling the involvement of basal versus apical oxygen states at the Fermi surface, we identify Tb$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ as an interesting candidate for superconductivity at ambient pressure. These results suggest a profound tunability of the structural and electronic phases in this novel materials class and are key for a fundamental understanding of the superconductivity mechanism.

Abstract:After several decades of studies of high-temperature superconductivity, there is no compelling theory for the mechanism yet; however, the spin fluctuations have been widely believed to play a crucial role in forming the superconducting Cooper pairs. The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity near 80 K in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure provides a new platform to elucidate the origins of high-temperature superconductivity. We perform elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies on a polycrystalline sample of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-\delta}$ at ambient pressure. No magnetic order can be identified down to 10 K. The absence of long-range magnetic order in neutron diffraction measurements may be ascribed to the smallness of the magnetic moment. However, we observe a weak flat spin-fluctuation signal at $\sim$ 45 meV in the inelastic scattering spectra. The observed spin excitations could be interpreted as a result of strong interlayer and weak intralayer magnetic couplings for stripe-type antiferromagnetic orders. Our results provide crucial information on the spin dynamics and are thus important for understanding the superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$.
