Abstract:In this invited lecture the biomechanical analysis of tactical tools utilized by top athletes in high level competition is presented. In the first part, the lecture starts with a very short summary of the researches carried out on biomechanics, thermal exchange and metabolic energy expenditure related to judo throwing technique. Abstract:In this paper we provide an appraisal of the scientific foundations of the Olympic sport "judo" from a Western perspective, i.e. a biomechanical reassessment of the basic teaching tools of the foundations of Jigoro Kano's Kodokan judo. The core of judo functional organization is the triad made up by the "Kuzushi-Tsukuri-Kake" movement. Kuzushi (unbalance), tsukuri (entry and proper fitting of Tori's [the actor] body into the position prior to the throwing phase), and kake (execution of the judo throwing action) occur as one effective movement without separation. Biomechanical analysis is able to broaden and deepen these steps proposed by Kan\=o, who for didactic reasons had separated the whole movement into three steps, as was pointed out previously by old Japanese biomechanical studies. The results of our biomechanical reassessment support: The importance of broadening the unbalance concept to the dynamic situation.Singling out the existence of two classes of paths and trajectories called "Action Invariants". The first, "General Action Invariants", are connected to the whole body motion for shortening the distance in the kuzushi/tsukuri phase; the second one, the "Specific Action Invariants", are connected to the superior and inferior kinetic chains motion and right positioning connected to both the kuzushi and tsukuri phases.The existence of two basic physical principles of throwing in according to a new classification.In a clear way the basic mechanical steps of all throws, and also show hidden connections, similarities and differences among judo throwing techniques, making this reassessment particularly useful from a didactic point of view. Demonstrate that this biomechanical approach is also able to understand how new and innovative technical variations are born.Our reassessment helps clarifying his concept and facilitates teachers and coaches in their professional work.

Abstract:This paper is an ideal continuation of the previous one - How to enhance effectiveness of Direct Attack Judo throws -in it there are analyzed the two following parts of Judo tactics in high level competitions: combination, and action-reaction. The paper start with a review of the Japanese approach to Initiative ( Sen) and follows by the biomechanical view of the same subject. High level competitions are the main argument not only of coaches match analysis , but also of a lot of scientific researches. However the connection between these two field that analyze the same subject is very hard . A lot of information are not easily transfer to coaching area. In this paper the effort to give coaching useful information is the primary aspect also at detriment of some formal mechanical information. After a new Operative Classification of throwing techniques , the biomechanical analysis of combination and action-reaction tricks flows in easy way singling out some interesting finding, useful for coaches. With this effort the biomechanical analysis of judo Interaction in high level competition could be considered completed

Abstract:In this paper it is applied the classic mechanical point of view to classify all the movements known as throwing judo techniques; the application of the Newtonian physical methods and principles is able to rationalize the whole matter and to group under only two very simple and clear principles all the movements, before grouped in many generic and not very clear way.

Abstract:This paper is focalized on the limit application of judo throws, by tactics at first contact time, with some astonishing information at a first seeing, but biomechanically grounded, not often applied or because against the sound common sense or out the old oral judo tradition. To do so we provide an appraisal of the grips concept and his consequences in the Olympic sport judo from a biomechanics perspective, we will try to deeper both the concept and the function of grips and define the potential application of some throws without grips. Broadening this situation we try to underline some specific throwing situation in which grips are or not at all applied or applied in non conventional way. We describe at first the problem from the theoretical point of view. And as second point we try to find practical application, original or already developed in high level competitions. The provocative words Judo without grips or throw without grips are connected to the limit application of some biomechanical tricks, grounded on two well known physical principles: the time advance in the attack, in Japanese Sen no Sen (already applied in real competitions), and the utilization of the own inertia connected to high attack speed to apply in totally original way one of the two biomechanical tools utilized to throw the human body.
Ritual Formalism and the Intangible Body of the Japanese Koryū Budō Culture

Abstract:The paper presents an analysis of the interrelation between the traditional Japanese martial arts culture (koryū budō) and its modern correspondents (gendai budō). The analysis is based on the idea of inscribing koryū budō on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, as Japan’s oldest martial cultural asset. Initial proposals to do so were put forward in the last ten years by some Japanese martial arts organizations, e.g. Nippon Budokan, especially by its koryū legacy division. The paper interprets the ritual-like and pattern-like formalism of the Japanese modern and traditional budō legacy, especially in the context of “Japanese nationalist history” after the Meiji Restoration. Emphasis is therefore put on the structures of movements that pre-exist in the ritual practices of the classical budō culture and are still present in modern martial arts systems, because of their hereditary and pre-formalized performativity.

Abstract:In this paper it is performed the comparative biomechanical analysis of the Kuzushi (Unbalance) -Tsukuri (the entry and proper fitting of Tori's body into the position taken just before throwing) phases of Judo Throwing techniques. The whole effective movement is without separation, as already stated by old Japanese biomechanical studies (1972 -1978), only one skilled connected action, but the biomechanical analysis is able to separate the whole in didactic steps called Action Invariants. The first important finding singled out is the existence of two classes of Action Invariants the first the General one' connected to the whole body motion is specific of shortening distance in the Kuzushi Tsukuri Phase. The second one, the Specific Action Invariants is connected to the superior and inferior kinetic chains motion and right positioning connected both to Kuzushi and Tsukuri phases. Some interesting findings derive from this analysis: among throwing techniques, couple techniques could be independent from Kuzushi; instead physical lever groups need all two action invariants to be performed successfully and as complex motor skill they are more difficult to perform than the first ones. Complexity in motion is connected to the energy consumption, and to the skill ability of athletes. This biomechanical comparative analysis is useful from the didactic point of view, clarifying the basic mechanical steps of all throws, and showing also hidden connections, similarities and differences among throwing Judo techniques. The last part of the paper concerns the study on Interaction in Competition, performed by the author, showing 20 years results on Judo Biomechanics.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In this study, we will analyze the representations in gymnastics teaching based on Gymnastica nas aulas, a manual published in 1895 by Manoel Baragiola. He was the teacher responsible for the gymnastics and military exercise classes at Escola Normal de São Paulo and sought to develop a model for classes through debates on gymnastic methods in the country and abroad. In addition to the analysis of the theoretical part of the textbook, other documents, including newspapers, periodicals, minutes of Escola Normal meetings, and management reports, were analyzed to demonstrate the gymnastics rationalization process in the city of São Paulo was based on many references in connected histories subjects and textual productions addressing practices of physical exercises that were distributed mainly in Italy and Brazil.

Abstract:In this second paper on match analysis, we analyze in deep the competition steps showing the evolution of this tool at National Federation level.On the basis of our,first classification. Furthermore, it is the most important source of technical assessment. Studying competition with this tool is essential for the coaches because they can obtain useful information for their coaching. Match Analysis is today the master key in situation sports like Judo, to help in useful way the difficult task of coach or best for National or Olympic coaching equips. In this paper it is presented a deeper study of the judo competitions at high level both from the male and female point of view, explaining at light of biomechanics, not only the throws evolution in time, introduction of Innovative and Chaotic techniques, but also the evolution of fighting style in these high level competitions, both connected with the grow of this Olympic Sport in the Word Arena. It is shown how new interesting ways are opened by this powerful coaching tool, very useful for National team technical management.In the last part of this paper we analyze advanced mathematical tools describing Couple of Athletes motion as Fractal Poisson Point Processes based on Fractional Brownian Motion to show how strategic evaluation, probability and short term forecast can be applied to Judo competition.

Abstract:Ettore Majorana was a member of Enrico Fermi's research group in Rome, Italy. The preliminary notes for his Inaugural Lecture reveal Majorana's interest not only for scientific research, but also for the best didactical methods to be followed in order to teach classical and quantum physics in the most effective way (while his approach to Special Relativity is known to us from his lecture notes, published elesewhere). Abstract:Here we present the transcription of the handwritten notes, carefully taken by an anonymous student, of the last lecture course taught by Guido Castelnuovo in 1922-23. The title of the course is "Curve algebriche piane e sghembe" ("Plane and space algebraic curves"): indeed, the language of both the original text and our brief introduction is Italian. The manuscript belongs to the legacy of Alfredo Franchetta (1916-2011) and the typesetting is due to Natascia Zangani. This edition is our modest contribution to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Guido Castelnuovo (1865-1952).

Abstract:The 96th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Orthopedic Association will be held from May 11 to 14, 2023, at Yokohama in Japan. I decided to set the theme for this meeting as "Quest for Science, Spirit, and Skills." We believe that the "quest" to master these elements is the basic principle of those responsible for well-balanced musculoskeletal medicine and is also essential to further developments of orthopedic surgery. The poster for the meeting incorporates Okayama Castle and an ukiyo-e painting of Miyamoto Musashi who was also famous for his nito-ryu or double-bladed swordsmanship. The idea behind using the ukiyo-e of Miyamoto Musashi on the poster is to draw an orthopaedic surgeon with "science" on one hand, "skills" on the other hand, and "spirit" in the heart. Moreover, novel perspectives and innovations may develop through working on more than two specialties. We believe that our interests to various clinical fields and science constitute the nito-ryu working style, which would accelerate the development orthopaedic science. It is important to challenge the unknown both in medicine and in life. Anyone would agree that it is fundamental to strive for new discoveries and technological developments in medicine. Sometimes we work hard because we cannot see the future, but there are times when we need to work hard even if we can anticipate the future. I think that your destiny may change depending on whether you make an effort or not. I would like young people to keep this in mind and continue to challenge the unknown. Finally, I would like to introduce the words of Shoin Yoshida in the Edo era: "Those without dreams have no success."

Abstract:In 2022, the Journal of Italian Cinema & Media Studies ( JICMS ) marked its tenth anniversary and a return to its in-person international conference. The third edition was once again held at The American University of Rome on 16–18 June 2022. The directors, Flavia Laviosa and Catherine Ramsey-Portolano, welcomed 130 academics and researchers from eighteen countries who reflected the current trends and directions within the Italian screen industries and studies. The keynote speaker was Stephen Gundle, and the programme also included a screening of the film Un confine incerto ( An Uncertain Border ) (2019), directed and co-written by Isabella Sandri, and a virtual seminar on academic publishing delivered by Intellect.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Elena Ferrante’s ‘Neapolitan Novels’, published in English between 2012 and 2015, tell the coming-of-age story of two women born in a poor neighbourhood in post-war Naples. The international success of this four-part series of novels – named in the Italian edition after the title of the first novel, L’amica geniale (‘My Brilliant Friend’) – testifies to the enduring popularity of the urban poor of Naples as a literary subject. This article discusses several key issues of urban poverty that emerge from the series (i.e. social exclusion, ghettoization, widespread illegality, endemic violence and women’s oppression) and analyses how they are narrated, drawing on two classic texts of ethnographic scholarship: Thomas Belmonte’s The Broken Fountain (1979) and Italo Pardo’s Managing Existence in Naples (1996). In doing so, it reconsiders Ferrante’s narrative from a socio-anthropological perspective and assesses her ‘ethnographic imagination’ vis-à-vis two opposing tendencies in the literature about the urban poor of Naples: one geared towards stigmatization and the other towards romanticization. The article thus argues that the ‘Neapolitan Novels’ offer a refreshing take on a deeply stereotyped subject, countering (at least in part) the process of ‘othering’ that traditionally affects the literary representation of Naples’ urban poor.

Abstract:In this paper it is performed the biomechanical analysis of Uchi Mata family, the unifying vision of biomechanics let coaches and teachers to approach competition and lessons in different way. Uchi Mata and all throws that are in the biomechanical group of Couple applied by trunk - leg showed that these most effective techniques in high level competition, are in fact also energetically less expensive than those of the Lever group. The overview of the sportive judo books that show the different kind of Uchi Mata, for example, are in term of Biomechanics always the same movement. The Japanese different vision informed also the studies among the world that never analyzed the unifying vision. The complementary tools to increase the effectiveness are also analyzed and few New or Chaotic application of trunk-leg family. The Physical and biomechanical background is analyzed showing that these throws are also bio-mechanically simpler, relying only on closing the distance and apply Couple . GAI plus Couple. Their intrinsic simplicity, however, hides a different complexity from those of the Lever which, remember, they need a high motor coordination to be effective. In fact, being able to apply these techniques of Couple require a particular timing ability.

Abstract:In the early years of the twentieth century, cinema joined the multitude of images (such as paintings, photographs, and engravings) which were spreading worldwide postcard stereotypes of Naples and its surrounds. The icons of this topographical myth included the natural beauties of the region and the monuments of the city, but also the citizens themselves. In fact, from macaroni eaters to tarantella dancers and brigands, they were an essential part of the urban landscape. This paper especially focuses on the Neapolitan tarantella dance and its local variants in silent cinema, examining how they were strictly linked to the city and its environs.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the views of judo coaches on their perceived knowledge (PK) and needs for education (NE) for training older practitioners. In total, 470 international (Europe = 48%, Americas = 22%, Africa = 23%, Asia = 5% and Oceania = 2%) judo coaches (IJF: level 1 = 55,3%, level 2 = 33%; judo black belt: 3,4 ± 1,7 dan; F = 15%; university education: 68% >BA) responded an online survey encompassing demographic information and 35 items relevant to training older adults (Aging process; Safety and First Aid; Organization & Environment; Physiology and Fitness; Psychology & Mental Health; Teaching & Training) to be rated on a 7-point Likert scale for PK and NE. Non parametric statistics (p > 0.05) was applied to ascertain differences and relationships between PK and NE, respectively. A bivariate go-zone plot was used to highlight items with the lowest PK and the highest NE mean values. The coaches reported high PK (4.5 ± 0.3 pt) and NE (4.7 ± 0.1 pt) values, with significant higher PK values emerging for high education levels and judo experience. In considering their unique needs and special role, the judo coaches presented valuable insights to develop a sustainable educational curriculum tailored to train older judo practitioners.
