Abstract:Efficient utilization of electrostatic charges is paramount for numerous applications, from printing to kinetic energy harvesting. However, existing technologies predominantly focus on the static qualities of these charges, neglecting their dynamic capabilities as carriers for energy conversion. Herein, we report a paradigm-shifting strategy that orchestrates the swift transit of surface charges, generated through contact electrification, via a freely moving droplet. This technique ingeniously creates a besptengngoke charged surface which, in tandem with a droplet acting as a transfer medium to the ground, facilitates targeted charge displacement and amplifies electrical energy collection. The spontaneously generated electric field between the charged surface and needle tip, along with the enhanced water ionization under the electric field, proves pivotal in facilitating controlled charge transfer. By coupling the effects of charge self-transfer, contact electrification, and electrostatic induction, a dual-electrode droplet-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (DD–TENG) is designed to harvest the water-related energy, exhibiting a two-order-of-magnitude improvement in electrical output compared to traditional single-electrode systems. Our strategy establishes a fundamental groundwork for efficient water drop energy acquisition, offering deep insights and substantial utility for future interdisciplinary research and applications in energy science.

Abstract:The escalating energy and environmental challenges have catalyzed a global shift toward seeking more sustainable, economical, and eco-friendly energy solutions. Water, capturing 35% of the Earth's solar energy, represents a vast reservoir of clean energy. However, current industrial capabilities harness only a fraction of the energy within the hydrological cycle. The past decade has seen rapid advancements in nanoscience and nanomaterials leading to a comprehensive exploration of liquid-solid triboelectrification as a low-carbon, efficient method for water energy harvesting. This review explores two fundamental principle models involved in liquid-solid triboelectrification. On the basis of these models, two distinct types of water energy harvesting devices, including droplet-based nanogenerators and water evaporation-induced nanogenerators, are summarized from their working principles, recent developments, materials, structures, and performance optimization techniques. Additionally, the applications of these nanogenerators in energy harvesting, self-powered sensing, and healthcare are also discussed. Ultimately, the challenges and future prospects of liquid-solid triboelectrification are further explored.

Abstract:In this study, the mechanisms of contact electrification in various liquid–liquid systems is comprehensively investigated and thus a liquid–liquid triboelectric nanogenerator with optimized materials and structures to harvest energy from rainwater is demonstrated. It generates a high charge density (3.63 μC L−1) with high output stability (crest factor ≈1.1), highlighting the promise of all‐liquid systems in distributed green energy and passive sensors. As one of the most widely distributed water resources, rainwater contains tremendous energy that cannot be effectively utilized by the conventional electromagnetic generators. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) represent a distributed method to convert trivial mechanical energy into electricity based on contact electrification. Benefiting from the large and replenishable contact interfaces in liquid–liquid systems, liquid–liquid TENG further promises efficient charge transfer. However, the limited understanding of liquid–liquid contact electrification has restricted its development. In this study, the mechanisms of contact electrification in various liquid–liquid systems is comprehensively investigated and thus a liquid–liquid TENG with optimized materials and structures to harvest energy from rainwater is demonstrated. The proposed liquid–liquid TENG generates a high charge density (3.63 μC L−1) with high output stability (crest factor ≈1.1) and long effective contact electrification time. Abstract:The use of water resources for energy generation has become increasingly prevalent, encompassing the conversion of kinetic energy from streams, tides, and waves into renewable electrical power. Water energy sources offer numerous benefits, including widespread availability, stability, and the absence of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions, making them a clean and environmentally friendly form of energy. In this work, we develop a droplet-based liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerator (LS-TENG) using sophisticatedly designed inflatable columnar structures with inner and outer dual-electrode. This device can be utilized to harvest both the internal droplet-rolling mechanical energy and the external droplet-falling mechanical energy, capable of assembling into various structures for versatile applications. The design incorporates a combined structure of both internal and external TENG to optimize output performance via multiple energy harvesting strategies. The internal structure features a dual-electrode columnar-shaped LS-TENG, designed to harvest fluid kinetic energy from water droplet flowing. By leveraging the back-and-forth motion of a small amount of water within the air column, mechanical energy can be collected, achieving a maximum mass power density of 9.02 W/Kg and an energy conversion efficiency of 10.358%. The external component is a droplet-based LS-TENG, which utilizes a double-layer capacitor switch effect elucidated with an equivalent circuit model. Remarkably, without the need for pre-charging, a single droplet can generate over 140 V of high voltage, achieving a maximum power density of 7.35 W·m2 and an energy conversion efficiency of 22.058%. The combined LS-TENG with sophisticated inflatable columnar structure can simultaneously collect multiple types of energy in high efficacy, exhibiting great significance in potential applications such as TENG aeration rings, inflatable lifejacket, wind energy harvesting, gas-column TENG tents, and green houses.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) offer significant potential in energy harvesting. The unique electric generation method and diverse structure enable the TENGs to harvest wind, wave, human motion, and other energies from different materials. This review examines the advancement from solid–solid TENG to liquid–solid TENG and discusses the challenges that TENGs face in the future. As the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels and the ever‐present need to address environmental concerns are faced, the development of efficient and sustainable energy harvesting techniques gains more and more significance. The liquid–solid triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has emerged as a promising solution for harvesting mechanical energy in water. Although the liquid–solid contact electrification technique is studied by numerous researchers, there is still a need to enhance energy harvesting efficiency in liquid–solid TENG. This comprehensive review discusses recent advances in kinetic energy harvesting from water, focusing on the solid–solid and liquid–solid interaction mechanisms when using TENGs as an energy conversion medium. The review summarizes the recent developments in structure design and material improvements, as well as hybridization with other generators as methods of enhancing the output performance of TENG. Besides discussing advancements of TENG, the potential impact and future challenges of liquid–solid TENG are highlighted. This paper provides insight into the current state of knowledge and the future directions of research in the field of liquid–solid TENG energy harvesting.

Abstract:Droplets‐based nanogenerators are droplet harvesting devices for energy scavenging effectively through contact electrification, piezoelectrification, and other processes. The outputs from droplet‐based nanogenerators can be used in many sensor networks and portable electronics. With further development, droplet harvesting can become a sustainable energy resource with the proper utilization of droplet‐based nanogenerators. Water is one of the most sustainable resources in the world, offering an abundance of hydro energy. Getting a large amount of electricity through conventional water energy harvesting is expensive, with complex mechanisms and bulky installation systems. In the case of the small amount of energy for some portable electronic devices and sensor systems, water droplet harvesting as a sustainable energy resource has become a forward‐looking step to meet the future demand for green energy. The ultimate demand for green energy in the future requires all the possible sustainable energy sources surrounding human society. The emerging potential of water droplet‐driven energy‐harvesting nanogenerators can meet a significant portion of the green energy demand. In this review, the recent developments in droplets‐driven nanogenerators for effective energy scavenging is summarized. It also includes an extensive discussion about the device structures from the material selection and output performance aspects. This review also gives a brief discussion on the applications of droplet‐based nanogenerators and outlines the future possibilities via the current improvement in designs and fabrication strategies that have been introduced by the field.

Abstract:Water droplet energy has received much attention as a newborn renewable energy source. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) demonstrates enormous application in scavenging mechanical energy. Nowadays, the water droplet nanogenerator based on liquid-solid TENG has been greatly improved. However, these water droplet nanogenerators scavenge the mechanical energy of liquid-solid contact of water droplets by TENG, but not the deformation energy of the substrate. Here, we propose a new design strategy to increase the current of the water droplet nanogenerator through simultaneous scavenging of the mechanical energy of the liquid-solid contact and the deformation energy. A droplet-based triboelectric-piezoelectric hybridized nanogenerator (TPiHNG) with cantilever beam structure was fabricated under the strategy. The TPiHNG has a significantly higher current compared to TENG. The response time difference between piezoelectric nanogenerator (PiENG) and TENG is proposed for the first time as an important parameter of TPiHNG. This work provides a novel approach to scavenge water droplet energy more efficiently.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) based on water droplets can harvest water kinetic energy using triboelectrification and electrostatic induction mechanisms. However, the development of traditional liquid-solid TENGs (L-S TENGs) is severely limited due to their low-performance output and high device encapsulation requirements for preparation technology. In this work, a single-electrode mode droplet-based TENG (D-TENG) is devised to effectively harvest water kinetic energy by optimizing the interface contact behavior of droplets, increasing the short-circuit current (ISC) of one drop of water from microamperes to milliamperes levels. In the D-TENG configuration, the electrode is positioned above the dielectric rather than at the bottom, allowing efficient utilization of generated friction charges and reducing the dissipation of these charges, thereby enhancing the output performance of the TENG. The influencing factors and operational mechanisms of D-TENG are studied to obtain optimized working conditions to improve its output performance. Under optimal conditions, the D-TENG can saturate the charge of the PTFE surface with only 8 droplets, achieving an ISC of up to 3.51 mA and an output voltage (VO) of 298.27 V. This work provides a convenient method for efficiently harvesting water kinetic energy based on interfacial behavior control. A single-electrode mode droplet-based triboelectric nanogenerator (D-TENG) is devised through direct contact between the electrode and water, which can obtain a short-circuit current greater than 3 mA without prolonged charge accumulation. The influence of the motion state of droplets on the change of electrical signals is expounded from the perspective of fluid dynamics.image

Abstract:Harvesting energy from natural water evaporation has been proposed as a promising alternative to supply power for self-powered and low-power devices and systems, owing to its spontaneous, ubiquitous, and sustainability. Herein, an approach is presented for harvesting water-evaporation-induced electricity based on liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerators (LS-TENGs), which has various advantages of easy preparation, substrate needless, and robustness. This developed harvester with porous Al2 O3 ceramic sheet can generate a continuous and stable direct current of ≈0.3 µA and voltage of ≈0.7 V by optimizing the sheet physical dimensions and ambient parameters such as relative humidity, temperature, wind velocity, and ion concentration. The output power also can be improved significantly by series or parallel connection the harvesters, which has superior electrical compatibility and environmental suitability. The development of the water-evaporation-induced electricity harvesting shows many application prospects including power supply for digital calculator and charging capacitor. This research provides an in-depth experimental study on water-evaporation-induced electricity harvesting based on LS-TENGs and an efficient approach to supply electricity for low-power devices.

Abstract:Water as an important renewable resource widely exists in human life in the form of raindrops, rivers, oceans, and so on. The efficient utilization of water energy has always been a hot spot in water-related researches. In recent years, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) show great potential in water energy harvesting due to its advantages of light weight, excellent flexibility, low cost, and high energy-collection efficiency. It is noteworthy that a hydrophobic interface can promote the complete separation of water and have the advantages of self-cleaning, anti-icing, anti-sticking, and anti-fogging, which is of great importance for the practical application of TENGs. This paper outlines the recent advances of water-driven TENGs based on hydrophobic interfaces, including the advantages of hydrophobic interfaces, materials used in hydrophobic interfaces, construction methods of effective hydrophobic interfaces, and explores the applications and future trends of water-driven TENGs based on hydrophobic interfaces.
Maximizing the energy scavenging capability of droplet triboelectric nanogenerators through surface engineering

Abstract:Recent advancements in energy harvesting have led to innovative methods for converting droplet motion into electricity, such as droplet triboelectric nanogenerators (D-TENGs). However, enhancing their power generation capacity and efficiency remains a challenge. We present a novel surface engineering approach that significantly boosts the electrical outputs of the D-TENGs. By grafting perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PFDTMS) onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces pre-treated with sandpaper, we achieve a dual effect: fluoridation and increased contact area between droplets and PDMS. This modification, when applied to a droplet-based TENG, yields a remarkable 10–20 fold increase in power metrics such as current, charge, and voltage as compared to untreated counterparts, resulting in an energy conversion efficiency of 17.1% under a 30 MΩ load. Our enhanced D-TENG efficiently harvested energy from falling tap water droplets, producing a current of ∼2 mA. Remarkably, a single droplet impact could illuminate 400 LED lights. Furthermore, when coupled with capacitors, the device powered a hygrometer and 3 W light bulbs, demonstrating substantial potential for real-world applications. This breakthrough in surface engineering for energy harvesters represents a significant step forward in the efficient and powerful generation of electricity from droplet motions.

Abstract:Harvesting energy from water flow based on liquid–solid contact electrification has been receiving intensive attention recently. However, due to the high deformability of water, challenges remain on exploring the dynamic motion of water in relation to the electrical output characteristic of water‐based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). Herein, by measuring the electrical output of a water droplet‐driven TENG (Wd‐TENG) along with observing the dynamics of the droplets by a high‐speed camera, a robust working mechanism of the Wd‐TENG is proposed, considering droplet spread, rebound, slide, and coalescence on the solid surface during the triboelectric cycle. It is demonstrated that the spread–rebound motion of droplet upon impact on the triboelectric layer surface results in one positive–negative current peak and the detachment of the droplet from the surface leads to another negative current peak. Droplet coalescence is also observed and found to cause larger negative peak when the merged droplet leaves the surface. The proposed mechanism is sufficiently proved by the results under different droplet dripping rates, sizes, surface wetting properties, and types of liquid. These findings provide an extended understanding of the liquid–solid contact electrification, which is significant in both fundamental and applied science of liquid–solid TENG.

Abstract:The droplet triboelectric nanogenerator (D-TENG) converts mechanical energy into electricity through contact electrification and electrostatic induction at the liquid-solid interface. The device's efficiency is significantly influenced by the surface molecular structure of its triboelectric layer. By applying a fluorosilane surface modification, we enhanced the contact electrification sites and improved electron transfer between water molecules and the triboelectric layer, leading to a high-performance D-TENG. This modification allowed the surface potential of modified PTFE to reach 85% of its maximum with just five droplets, generating maximum charges of 80 and 500 nC with deionized and tap water droplets, respectively. These results surpass those of similar energy harvesting devices. The successful electron transfer mechanism was confirmed through first-principles and molecular dynamics, suggesting our approach could be broadly applicable to improving other triboelectric nanogenerators.

Noteworthy is their remarkable capacity to convert continuous mechanical energy into electricity from environmental sources such as natural wind, river flow, and raindrops. The review delves into the prominent characteristics of F-TENGs, providing a retrospective analysis of their developmental journey and foundational structure. It critically examines key factors influencing power generation capability and output performance, offering insights into the typical structures of F-TENGs in practical applications. The paper highlights the significant achievements of F-TENGs across diverse domains including agriculture, the Internet of Things, environment, transportation, industry, microfluidics, and life science. A Dual-Mode Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Efficiently Harvesting Droplet Energy

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a promising solution to harvest the low-frequency, low-actuation-force, and high-entropy droplet energy. Conventional attempts mainly focus on maximizing electrostatic energy harvest on the liquid-solid surface, but enormous kinetic energy of droplet hitting the substrate is directly dissipated, limiting the output performance. Here, a dual-mode TENG (DM-TENG) is proposed to efficiently harvest both electrostatic energy at liquid-solid surface from a droplet TENG (D-TENG) and elastic potential energy of the vibrated cantilever from a contact-separation TENG (CS-TENG). Triggered by small droplets, the flexible cantilever beam, rather than conventional stiff ones, can easily vibrate multiple times with large amplitude, enabling frequency multiplication of CS-TENG and producing amplified output charges. Combining with the top electrode design to sufficiently utilize charges at liquid-solid interface, a record-high output charge of 158 nC is realized by single droplet. The energy conversion efficiency of DM-TENG is 2.66-fold of D-TENG. An array system with the specially designed power management circuit is also demonstrated for building self-powered system, offering promising applications for efficiently harvesting raindrop energy.
Photovoltaic-Triboelectric Hybridized Nanogenerator for Simultaneously Scavenging Light and Liquid-Droplet Energies

Abstract:Hybridized nanogenerator has made breakthroughs in multiple types of energy scavenging, however, introduction of new materials that make hybridized structure more simplified and environmentally friendly is needed further research. Here, we developed a hybridized nanogenerator composed of photovoltaic cell (PVC) and triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), which can scavenge both light and liquid-droplet energies. In this device, the PVC share bottom electrode with the TENG. The device exhibits good hybridized process, generating peak current and peak voltage of 16.96 μA and 0.83 V, by scavenging light and liquid-droplet energies simultaneously. The hybridized output show that the maximum hybridized peak power was determined by the peak power of TENG who exhibited pulselike output, while the maximum hybridized output energy was much more affected by the output energy of PVC who generated continuous signals. This work enables the simultaneously scavenging light and liquid-droplet energies through individual device, which will open up unexplored avenues for simultaneously scavenging liquid-droplet energy and other types of energies.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), as a new strategy for harvesting energy from nature, have attracted widespread attention in the field of water droplet energy capture. As a friction layer material, the solidliquid electrification phenomenon of coatings has been studied. However, little attention is paid to the influence of the surface wettability of the coating itself on the electrical signal of the droplet generator. In this study, alkyl/phenyl pure silicone resin was utilized as a substitute for fluorine-containing polymer materials. This substitution not only mitigated the risk of environmental pollution from TENG friction materials but also resulted in varying wettability of the silicone resin coating through plasma and surface structure treatment. The droplet-based Double-electrode (D-TENG) and Single-electrode (S-TENG) coating-based triboelectric nanogenerators were fabricated. Through the integration of a high-speed camera and ammeter, the motion state of water droplets on surfaces with different wettability closely correlates with their charged behavior. This correlation is utilized to observe the motion state of water droplets on hydrophilic-hydrophobic surfaces in four stages: contact, spreading, contraction, and sliding. Under the double-electrode structure, as the water contact angle of the coating increased from 6.84° to 139.77°, the short-circuit current initially increased and then decreased, peaking at 466µA when the contact angle was 98.48°, representing a 677-fold increase from the initial 0.689µA. In the single electrode structure, the short-circuit current increased from 2.66nA to 700nA, indicating a 263-fold increase. Studying the varied wettability of the surface of silicone resin coating aids in comprehending the application of the coating material in solid-liquid friction electrification for energy collection. Furthermore, it offers insight into selecting appropriate coating materials for friction coatings in future applications.

Abstract:A new prototype triboelectric nanogenerator with superhydrophobic and self-cleaning features is invented to harvest water drop energy based on a sequential contact electrification and electrostatic induction process. Because of the easy-fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and robust properties, the developed triboelectric nanogenerator expands the potential applications to harvesting energy from household wastewater and raindrops.
