Abstract:Bamboo forest has great potential in climate change mitigation. However, the spatiotemporal pattern of carbon storage of global bamboo forest is still cannot be accurately estimated, because the lack of an accurate global bamboo forest distribution information. In this paper, the global bamboo forest distribution was mapped with the following steps. To begin with, training samples were obtained based on investigation data, statistic data, and literature data. Then, a decision tree was constructed for mapping the global bamboo forest distribution by integrating Landsat 8 OLI and MODIS data. Finally, the global bamboo forest area was estimated using a pixel unmixing algorithm. The constructed decision tree succeeds in extracting global bamboo forest based on remote sensing data, where the overall accuracy of classification was 78.81%. The estimated total global bamboo forest area was 30538.35 × 103 ha, with a low root-mean-square error of 611.1 × 103 ha. The estimated bamboo forest area of each province in China and each country were high consistent with the National Forest Inventory in China and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations statistic results (average R2 > 0.9), respectively. Therefore, the global bamboo forest map yielded a satisfactory accuracy in both classification and area estimation, and could provide accurate and significant support for global bamboo forest resource management and carbon cycle research.
Mapping Forest and Their Spatial–Temporal Changes from 2007 to 2015 in Tropical Hainan Island by Integrating ALOS/ALOS-2 L-Band SAR and Landsat Optical Images

Abstract:Accurately monitoring forest dynamics in the tropical regions is essential for ecological studies and forest management. In this study, images from phase-array L-band synthetic aperture radar (PALSAR), PALSAR-2, and Landsat in 2006-2010 and 2015 were combined to identify tropical forest dynamics on Hainan Island, China. Annual forest maps were first mapped from PALSAR and PALSAR-2 images using structural metrics. Those pixels with a high biomass of sugarcane or banana, which are widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics and have similar structural metrics as forests, were excluded from the SAR-based forest maps by using phenological metrics from time series Landsat imagery. The optical-SAR-based forest maps in 2010 and 2015 had high overall accuracies (OA) of 92-97% when validated with ground reference data. The resultant forest map in 2010 shows good spatial agreement with public optical- based forest maps (OA = 88-90%), and the annual forest maps (2007-2010) were spatiotemporally consistent and more accurate than the PALSAR-based forest map from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (OA = 82% in 2010). The areas of forest gain, loss, and net change on Hainan Island from 2007 to 2015 were 415 000 ha (+2.17% yr(-1)), 179 000 ha (-0.94% yr(-1)), and 236 000 ha (+1.23% yr(-1)), respectively. About 95% of forest gain and loss occurred in those areas with an elevation less than 400 m, where deciduous rubber, eucalyptus plantations, and urbanization expanded rapidly. This study demonstrates the potential of PALSAR/PALSAR-2/Landsat image fusion for monitoring annual forest dynamics in the tropical regions.

Abstract:Annual forest maps at a high spatial resolution are necessary for forest management and conservation. Large uncertainties remain in existing forest maps because of different forest definitions, satellite datasets, in situ training datasets, and mapping algorithms. In this study, we generated annual maps of forest and evergreen forest at a 30 m resolution in the contiguous United States (CONUS) during 2015–2017 by integrating microwave data (Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar – PALSAR-2) and optical data (Landsat) using knowledge-based algorithms. The resultant PALSAR-2/Landsat-based forest maps (PL-Forest) were compared with five major forest datasets from the CONUS: (1) the Landsat tree canopy cover from the Global Forest Watch dataset (GFW-Forest), (2) the Landsat Vegetation Continuous Field dataset (Landsat VCF-Forest), (3) the National Land Cover Database 2016 (NLCD-Forest), (4) the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency forest maps (JAXA-Forest), and (5) the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (FIA-Forest). The forest structure data (tree canopy height and canopy coverage) derived from the lidar observations of the Geoscience Laser Altimetry System (GLAS) on board NASA's Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat-1) were used to assess the five forest cover datasets derived from satellite images. Using the forest definition of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, more forest pixels from the PL-Forest maps meet the FAO's forest definition than the GFW-Forest, Landsat VCF-Forest, and JAXA-Forest datasets. Forest area estimates from PL-Forest were close to those from the FIA-Forest statistics, higher than GFW-Forest and NLCD-Forest, and lower than Landsat VCF-Forest, which highlights the potential of using both the PL-Forest and FIA-Forest datasets to support the FAO's Global Forest Resources Assessment. Furthermore, the PALSAR-2/Landsat-based annual evergreen forest maps (PL-Evergreen Forest) showed reasonable consistency with the NLCD product. The comparison of the most widely used forest datasets offered insights to employ appropriate products for relevant research and management activities across local to regional and national scales. The improved annual maps of forest and evergreen forest at 30 m over the CONUS can be used to support forest management, conservation, and resource assessments.

Annual Dynamics of Forest Areas in South America During 2007–2010 at 50-M Spatial Resolution

Abstract:South America has the largest tropical rainforests and the richest biodiversity in the world. It is challenging to map tropical forests and their spatio-temporal changes because forests are facing fragmentation from human activities (e.g., logging, deforestation), drought, and fire, as well as persistent clouds. Here we present a robust approach to map forests in South America during 2007–2010 and analyze the consistency and uncertainty among eight major forest maps in South America. Greenness-relevant MOD13Q1 NDVI and structure/biomass-relevant ALOS PALSAR time series data recorded 2007 through 2010 were coupled to identify and map forests at 50-m spatial resolution. Both area and spatial comparison were conducted to analyze the consistency and uncertainty of these eight forest maps. Annual 50-m PALSAR/MODIS forest maps were generated during 2007–2010 and the total forest area in South America was about 8.63×106km2 in 2010. Large differences in total forest area (8.2×106km2–12.7×106km2) existed among these forest products, especially in the forest edges, semi-humid tropical, and subtropical regions. Forest products generated under a similar forest definition had similar or even larger variation than those generated with contrasting forest definitions. We also find out that one needs to consider leaf area index as an adjusting factor and use much higher threshold values in the Vegetation Continuous Field (VCF) datasets to estimate forest cover areas. Analyses of PALSAR/MODIS forest maps in 2008/2009 showed a relatively small rate of loss (3.2×104km2year−1) in net forest cover, similar to that of FAO FRA (3.3×104km2year−1), but much higher annual rates of forest loss and gain. The rate of forest loss (0.195×106km2year−1) was higher than that of Global Forest Watch (0.081×106km2year−1). PALSAR/MODIS forest maps showed that more deforestation occurred in the unfragmented forest areas. Caution should be used when using the different forest maps to analyze forest loss and make policies regarding forest ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation. The integration of PALSAR and MODIS images during 2007–2010 provides annual maps of forests in South America with improved accuracy and reduced uncertainty.
Improved Fine-Scale Tropical Forest Cover Mapping for Southeast Asia Using Planet-NICFI and Sentinel-1 Imagery

Abstract:The accuracy of existing forest cover products typically suffers from "rounding" errors arising from classifications that estimate the fractional cover of forest in each pixel, which often exclude the presence of large, isolated trees and small or narrow forest clearings, and is primarily attributable to the moderate resolution of the imagery used to make maps. However, the degree to which such high-resolution imagery can mitigate this problem, and thereby improve large-area forest cover maps, is largely unexplored. Here, we developed an approach to map tropical forest cover at a fine scale using Planet and Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery in the Google Earth Engine platform and used it to map all of Southeastern Asia's forest cover. The machine learning approach, based on the Random Forests models and trained and validated using a total of 37,345 labels collected from Planet imagery across the entire region, had an accuracy of 0.937 and an F1 score of 0.942, while a version based only on Planet imagery had an accuracy of 0.908 and F1 of 0.923. We compared the accuracy of our resulting maps with 5 existing forest cover products derived from medium-resolution optical-only or combined optical-SAR approaches at 3,000 randomly selected locations. We found that our approach overall achieved higher accuracy and helped minimize the rounding errors commonly found along small or narrow forest clearings and deforestation frontiers where isolated trees are common. However, the forest area estimates varied depending on topographic location and showed smaller differences in highlands (areas >300 m above sea level) but obvious differences in complex lowland landscapes. Overall, the proposed method shows promise for monitoring forest changes, particularly those caused by deforestation frontiers. Our study also represents one of the most extensive applications of Planet imagery to date, resulting in an open, high-resolution map of forest cover for the entire Southeastern Asia region.

Abstract:Bamboo forest has undergone dramatic expansion due to climate changes and human activities, and its direct effects on both carbon storage and biodiversity of the forest ecosystem have occurred in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in China. However, the uncertainty in tracking bamboo forest extent and expansion intensity substantially influenced our assessment of them due to the poor resolution and persistent cloud covers in optical images (e.g., Landsat and Sentinel-2). We developed a straightforward and superior algorithm by coupling vegetation phenology and cloud-free SAR using Sentinel-1 and -2 images to identify bamboo forest at large scales and higher spatial resolution. Specifically, (1) this study analyzed the spectral and phenological characteristics during the bamboo forest growth season; (2) the optimum parameter sets for the SAR backscatter were calibrated against field data by using the genetic algorithm; (3) and then we generated bamboo forest and expansion intensity maps at 10 m spatial resolution for seven study regions in China in 2020. The results showed that the Kappa of the maps was 0.89, and the OA was 94.7% in all study areas, compared with the field data. The accuracy among each study area also performed well in mapping bamboo forest, indicated by Kappa varying from 0.82 to 0.94, and OA ranging from 91.1% to 97.33%. Compared to the national forestry inventory map, our results showed a significant positive linear relationship, with a higher R 2 (0.96, p < 0.001). With the high-resolution results, we found that the tree was most severely affected by bamboo forest, followed by grassland, sparse vegetation, and shrubland. This product can be a key input for many carbon cycles, climate, and vegetation models.

Abstract:Despite rapid advances and large-scale initiatives in forest mapping, reliable cross-border information about the status of forest resources in Central Asian countries is lacking. We produced consistent Central Asia forest cover (CAFC) maps based on a cost-efficient approach using multi-resolution satellite imagery from Landsat and MODIS during 2009-2011. The spectral-temporal metrics derived from 2009-2011 Landsat imagery (overall accuracy of 0.83) was used to predict sub-pixel forest cover on the MODIS scale for 2010. Accuracy assessment confirmed the validity of MODIS-based forest cover map with a normalized root-mean-square error of 0.63. A general paucity of forest resources in post-Soviet Central Asia was indicated, with 1.24% of the region covered by forest. In comparison to the CAFC map, a regional map derived from MODIS Vegetation Continuous Fields tended to underestimate forest cover, while the Global Forest Change product matched well. The Global Forest Resources Assessments, based on individual country reports, overestimated forest cover by 1.5 to 147 times, particularly in the more arid countries of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Multi-resolution imagery contributes to regionalized assessment of forest cover in the world's drylands while developed CAFC maps (available at https://data.zef.de/ ) aim to facilitate decisions on biodiversity conservation and reforestation programs in Central Asia.
Annual Maps of Forests in Australia from Analyses of Microwave and Optical Images with FAO Forest Definition

Abstract:The Australian governmental agencies reported a total of 149 million ha forest in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2010, ranking sixth in the world, which is based on a forest definition with tree height > 2 meters . Here, we report a new forest cover data product that used the FAO forest definition ( tree cover > 10 % and tree height > 5 meters at observation time or mature) and was derived from microwave (Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar, PALSAR) and optical (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, MODIS) images and validated with very high spatial resolution images, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data from the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), and in situ field survey sites. The new PALSAR/MODIS forest map estimates 32 million ha of forest in 2010 over Australia. PALSAR/MODIS forest map has an overall accuracy of ~95% based on the reference data derived from visual interpretation of very high spatial resolution images for forest and nonforest cover types. Compared with the canopy height and canopy coverage data derived from ICESat LiDAR strips, PALSAR/MODIS forest map has 73% of forest pixels meeting the FAO forest definition, much higher than the other four widely used forest maps (ranging from 36% to 52%). PALSAR/MODIS forest map also has a reasonable spatial consistency with the forest map from the National Vegetation Information System. This new annual map of forests in Australia could support cross-country comparison when using data from the FAO Forest Resource Assessment Reports.

Abstract:This study examines the suitability of 30 m Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), 250 m time-series Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and other auxiliary datasets for mapping forest extent in China at 30 m resolution circa 2010. We calculated numerous spectral features, EVI time series, and topographical features that are helpful for forest/non-forest distinction. In this research, extensive efforts have been made in developing training samples over difficult to map or complex regions. Scene by scene quality checking was done on the initial forest extent results and low quality results were refined until satisfactory. Based on the forest extent mask, we classified the forested area into 6 types (evergreen/deciduous broadleaf, evergreen/deciduous needleleaf, mixed forests, and bamboos). Accuracy assessment of our forest/non-forest classification using 2195 test sample units independent of the training sample indicates that the producer's accuracy (PA) and user's accuracy (UA) are 92.0% and 95.7%, respectively. According to this map, the total forested area in China was 164.90 million ha (Mha) circa 2010. It is close to the forest area of 7th National Forest Resource Inventory with the same definition of forest. The overall accuracy for the more detailed forest type classification is 72.7%.
A Comparison of Six Forest Mapping Products in Southeast Asia, Aided by Field Validation Data

Abstract:Currently, many globally accessible forest mapping products can be utilized to monitor and assess the status of and changes in forests. However, substantial disparities exist among these products due to variations in forest definitions, classification methods, and remote sensing data sources. This becomes particularly conspicuous in regions characterized by significant deforestation, like Southeast Asia, where forest mapping uncertainty is more pronounced, presenting users with challenges in selecting appropriate datasets across diverse regions. Moreover, this situation impedes the further enhancement of accuracy for forest mapping products. The aim of this research is to assess the consistency and accuracy of six recently produced forest mapping products in Southeast Asia. These products include three 10 m land cover products (Finer Resolution Observation and Monitoring Global LC (FROM-GLC10), ESA WorldCover 10 m 2020 (ESA2020), and ESRI 2020 Land Cover (ESRI2020)) and three forest thematic mapping products (Global PALSAR-2 Forest/Non-Forest map (JAXA FNF2020), global 30 m spatial distribution of forest cover in 2020 (GFC30_2020), and Generated_Hansen2020, which was synthesized based on Hansen TreeCover2010 (Hansen2010) and Hansen Global Forest Change (Hansen GFC) for the year 2020). Firstly, the research compared the area and spatial consistency. Next, accuracy was assessed using field validation points and manual densification points. Finally, the research analyzed the geographical environmental and biophysical factors influencing consistency. The results show that ESRI2020 had the highest overall accuracy for forest, followed by ESA2020, FROM-GLC10, and Generated_Hansen2020. Regions with elevations ranging from 200 to 3000 m and slopes below 15° or above 25° showed high spatial consistency, whereas other regions showed low consistency. Inconsistent regions showed complex landscapes heavily influenced by human activities; these regions are prone to being confused with shrubs and cropland and are also impacted by rubber and oil palm plantations, significantly affecting the accuracy of forest mapping. Based on the research findings, ESRI2020 is recommended for mountainous areas and abundant forest regions. However, in areas significantly affected by human activities, such as forest and non-forest edges and mixed areas of plantations and natural forests, caution should be taken with product selection. The research has identified areas of forest inconsistency that require attention in future forest mapping. To enhance our understanding of forest mapping and generate high-precision forest cover maps, it is recommended to incorporate multi-source data, subdivide forest types, and increase the number of sample points.

Abstract:Due to rapid losses of mangrove forests caused by anthropogenic disturbances and climate change, accurate and contemporary maps of mangrove forests are needed to understand how mangrove ecosystems are changing and establish plans for sustainable management. In this study, a new classification algorithm was developed using the biophysical characteristics of mangrove forests in China. More specifically, these forests were mapped by identifying: (1) greenness, canopy coverage, and tidal inundation from time series Landsat data, and (2) elevation, slope, and intersection-with-sea criterion. The annual mean Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was found to be a key variable in determining the classification thresholds of greenness, canopy coverage, and tidal inundation of mangrove forests, which are greatly affected by tide dynamics. In addition, the integration of Sentinel-1A VH band and modified Normalized Difference Water Index (mNDWI) shows great potential in identifying yearlong tidal and fresh water bodies, which is related to mangrove forests. This algorithm was developed using 6 typical Regions of Interest (ROIs) as algorithm training and was run on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to process 1941 Landsat images (25 Path/Row) and 586 Sentinel-1A images circa 2015. The resultant mangrove forest map of China at 30m spatial resolution has an overall/users/producer’s accuracy greater than 95% when validated with ground reference data. In 2015, China’s mangrove forests had a total area of 20,303ha, about 92% of which was in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangdong, and Hainan Provinces. This study has demonstrated the potential of using the GEE platform, time series Landsat and Sentine-1A SAR images to identify and map mangrove forests along the coastal zones. The resultant mangrove forest maps are likely to be useful for the sustainable management and ecological assessments of mangrove forests in China.

Abstract:Updated and accurate maps of tropical forests and industrial plantations, like rubber plantations, are essential for understanding carbon cycle and optimal forest management practices, but existing optical-imagery-based efforts are greatly limited by frequent cloud cover. Here we explored the potential utility of integrating 25-m cloud-free Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) mosaic product and multi-temporal Landsat images to map forests and rubber plantations in Hainan Island, China. Based on structure information detected by PALSAR and yearly maximum Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), we first identified and mapped forests with a producer accuracy (PA) of 96% and user accuracy (UA) of 98%. The resultant forest map showed reasonable spatial and areal agreements with the optical-based forest maps of Fine Resolution Observation and Monitoring Global Land Clover (FROM-GLC) and GlobalLand30. We then extracted rubber plantations from the forest map according to their deciduous features (using minimum Land Surface Water Index, LSWI) and rapid changes in canopies during Rubber Defoliation and Foliation (RDF) period (using standard deviation of LSWI) and dense canopy in growing season (using maximum NDVI). The rubber plantation map yielded a high accuracy when validated by ground truth-based data (PA/UA>86%) and evaluated with three farm-scale rubber plantation maps (PA/UA>88%). It is estimated that in 2010, Hainan Island had 2.11×106ha of forest and 5.15×105ha of rubber plantations. This study has demonstrated the potential of integrating 25-m PALSAR-based structure information, and Landsat-based spectral and phenology information for mapping tropical forests and rubber plantations.
Annual maps of forest cover in the Brazilian Amazon from analyses of PALSAR and MODIS images

Abstract:Many forest cover maps have been generated by using optical and/or microwave images, but these forest cover maps have large area and spatial discrepancies. To date, few studies have assessed forest cover maps in terms of two biophysical parameters used in forest definition: canopy height and canopy coverage. We generated annual forest cover maps from 2007 to 2010 and evergreen forest cover maps from 2000 to 2021 in the Brazilian Amazon using the images from the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar and the time series images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, using the forest definition of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ( >5 m tree height and >10 % canopy coverage) as the reference. We used the canopy height and canopy coverage datasets from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System during 2003–2007 to assess annual forest cover maps from 2007 to 2010 and annual evergreen forest cover maps from 2003 to 2007, and the results show high accuracy of these forest cover and evergreen forest cover maps. These annual forest cover maps and annual evergreen forest cover maps provide data support for the analyses of the causes, processes, and consequences of forest cover changes in the Brazilian Amazon (https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.21445626; Qin and Xiao, 2022a; https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.21445590; Qin and Xiao, 2022b).

Abstract:Global land cover types in 2001 and 2010 were mapped at 250m resolution with multiple year time series Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data. The map for each single year was produced not only from data of that particular year but also from data acquired in the preceding and subsequent years as temporal context. Slope data and geographical coordinates of pixels were also used. The classification system was derived from the finer resolution observation and monitoring of global land cover (FROM-GLC) project. Samples were based on the 2010 FROM-GLC project and samples for other years were obtained by excluding those changed from 2010. A random forest classifier was used to obtain original class labels and to estimate class probabilities for 2000–2002, and 2009–2011. The overall accuracies estimated from cross validation of samples are 74.93% for 2001 and 75.17% for 2010. The classification results were further improved through post processing. A spatial-temporal consistency model, Maximum a Posteriori Markov Random Fields (MAP-MRF), was first applied to improve land cover classification for each 3 consecutive years. The MRF outputs for 2001 and 2010 were then processed with a rule-based label adjustment method with MOD44B, slope and composited EVI series as auxiliary data. The label adjustment process relabeled the over-classified forests, water bodies and barren lands to alternative classes with maximum probabilities.
Regional Sampling of Forest Canopy Covers Using UAV Visible Stereoscopic Imagery for Assessment of Satellite-Based Products in Northeast China

Abstract:Canopy cover is an important parameter affecting forest succession, carbon fluxes, and wildlife habitats. Several global maps with different spatial resolutions have been produced based on satellite images, but facing the deficiency of reliable references for accuracy assessments. The rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with consumer-grade camera enables the acquisition of high-resolution images at low cost, which provides the research community a promising tool to collect reference data. However, it is still a challenge to distinguish tree crowns and understory green vegetation based on the UAV-based true color images (RGB) due to the limited spectral information. In addition, the canopy height model (CHM) derived from photogrammetric point clouds has also been used to identify tree crowns but limited by the unavailability of understory terrain elevations. This study proposed a simple method to distinguish tree crowns and understories based on UAV visible images, which was referred to as BAMOS for convenience. The central idea of the BAMOS was the synergy of spectral information from digital orthophoto map (DOM) and structural information from digital surface model (DSM). Samples of canopy covers were produced by applying the BAMOS method on the UAV images collected at 77 sites with a size of about 1.0 km 2 across Daxing’anling forested area in northeast of China. Results showed that canopy cover extracted by the BAMOS method was highly correlated to visually interpreted ones with correlation coefficient ( r ) of 0.96 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 5.7%. Then, the UAV-based canopy covers served as references for assessment of satellite-based maps, including MOD44B Version 6 Vegetation Continuous Fields (MODIS VCF), maps developed by the Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF) and by the Global Land Analysis and Discovery laboratory (GLAD). Results showed that both GLAD and GLCF canopy covers could capture the dominant spatial patterns, but GLAD canopy cover tended to miss scattered trees in highly heterogeneous areas, and GLCF failed to capture non-tree areas. Most important of all, obvious underestimations with RMSE about 20% were easily observed in all satellite-based maps, although the temporal inconsistency with references might have some contributions.

Abstract:The assessment of forest structural parameters is crucial for understanding carbon storage, habitat suitability, and timber stock. However, the labor-intensive and expensive nature of field measurements, coupled with inadequate sample sizes for large-scale modeling, poses challenges. To address the forest structure parameters in the Western Tianshan Mountains, this study used UAV-LiDAR to gather extensive sample data. This approach was enhanced by integrating Sentinel satellite and topographic data and using a Bayesian-Random Forest model to estimate forest canopy height, average height, density, and aboveground biomass (AGB). Validation against independent LiDAR-derived samples confirmed the model's high accuracy, with coefficients of determination (R2) and root mean square errors (RMSE) indicating strong predictive performance (R2 = 0.63, RMSE = 5.06 m for canopy height; R2 = 0.64, RMSE = 2.88 m for average height; R2 = 0.68, RMSE = 62.84 for density; and R2 = 0.59, RMSE = 29.71 Mg/ha for AGB). Notably, the crucial factors include DEM, Sentinel-1 (VH and VV backscatter in dB), and Sentinel-2 (B6, B8A, and B11 bands). These factors contribute significantly to the modeling of forest structure. This technology aims to expedite and economize forest surveys while augmenting the range of forest parameters, especially in remote and rugged terrains. Using a wealth of UAV-LiDAR data, this outcome surpasses its counterparts' by providing essential insights for exploring climate change effects on Central Asian forests, facilitating precise carbon stock quantification, and enhancing knowledge of forest ecosystems.

Mapping China’s Planted Forests Using High Resolution Imagery and Massive Amounts of Crowdsourced Samples

Abstract:Tree planting has been suggested as a potentially effective solution for mitigating climate change. China has implemented the world's largest afforestation and reforestation project since the 1970s, but high-resolution maps of China's planted forests remain unavailable. In this study, we explored the use of multi-source remote sensing images and crowdsourced samples to produce the first high-resolution (30-m) map of China's planted forests. We constructed a Google Earth Engine (GEE)-based mapping framework using spectral, temporal, structural, textural and topographic features derived from Landsat and Sentinel-1 time series imagery, Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Chinese Forest Canopy Height (CFCH) data. Over 300,000 high-quality crowdsourced samples were collected for training the mapping pipeline. Validation against independent field samples indicated an accuracy of 84.93 % and an F1 score of 0.85. The uncertainty map of each pixel was also constructed and showed that the areas of low and medium uncertainties accounted for 38.27 % and 50.98 % of the total area, respectively, indicating the high estimation reliabilities of the planted forest map. We show that China's planted forests in the year of 2020 had a total area of 769853.01 km2, accounting for 31.30 % of the world's total planted forests. The majority (77.45 %) of China's planted forests were located in the Eastern, Center-South, and Southwestern regions. By further assessing the performance of the image features used to map the planted forests, we found that temporal features are key to identifying the planted forests in East and Center-South of China, where they are mainly timber plantations. However, structural and textural features were more useful for locating the planted forests in North and Northeast of China, where are dominated by planted shelterbelts. Our study demonstrated that combining crowdsourced samples with high-resolution satellite images allows mapping planted forests with unprecedented resolution (30-m) across large areas. Our map could contribute to the sustainable management of China's forests and a more accurate quantification of the carbon balance of China's natural ecosystems.

Abstract:High-resolution mapping of tree cover is indispensable for effectively addressing tropical forest carbon loss, climate warming, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. However, the availability of precise, high-resolution tree cover map products remains inadequate due to the inherent limitations of mapping techniques utilizing medium- to coarse-resolution satellite imagery, such as Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery. In this study, we have generated an annual tree cover map product at a resolution of 4.77 m for Southeast Asia (SEA) for the years 2016–2021 by integrating Norway's International Climate and Forests Initiative imagery from Planet (hereafter Planet-NICFI) and Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar data. We have also collected annual tree cover/non-tree cover samples to assess the accuracy of our Planet-NICFI tree cover map product. The results show that our Planet-NICFI tree cover map product for 2016–2021 achieves high accuracy, with an overall accuracy of ≥0.867 ± 0.017 and a mean F1 score of 0.921. Furthermore, our tree cover map product exhibits high temporal consistency from 2016 to 2021. Compared with existing map products (e.g., Finer Resolution Observation and Monitoring of Global Land Cover 10 m, FROM-GLC10, and European Space Agency WorldCover 2020 and 2021), our tree cover map product exhibits better performance, both statistically and visually. However, the imagery obtained from Planet-NICFI does not perform as well with respect to mapping tree cover in areas with diverse vegetation or complex landscapes due to insufficient spectral information. Nevertheless, we highlight the capability of Planet-NICFI imagery to provide quick and fine-scale tree cover mapping to a large extent. The consistent characterization of tree cover dynamics in SEA's tropical forests can be further applied in various disciplines. Abstract:One hundred and six patients with angina pectoris who underwent routine coronary angiography and left ventriculography were given intracoronary injection of thallium 201. The myocardial images had excellent resolution because of lack of interference from the background activity. The myocardial images and the left ventriculograms showed 94% correlation. Correlation between scans and EKG was lower. There was no correlation between the degree of coronary artery stenosis and 201Tl scan. Currently, the intracoronary injection of 201Tl at rest does not yield additional information to coronary angiography and left ventriculography.

Abstract:Abstract In South Asia, annual land cover and land use (LCLU) is a severe issue in the field of earth science because it affects regional climate, global warming, and human activities. Therefore, it is vital essential to obtain correct information on the LCLU in the South Asia regions. LULC annual map covering the entire period is the primary dataset for climatological research. Although the LULC annual global map was produced from the MODIS dataset in 2001, this limited the perspective of the climatological analysis. This study used AVHRR GIMMS NDVI3g data from 2001 to 2015 to randomly forests classify and produced a time series of the annual LCLU map of the South Asia. The MODIS land cover products (MCD12Q1) are used as data from reference for trained classifiers. The results were verified using of the annual map of LCLU time series, and the space-time dynamics of the LCLU map were shown in the last 15 years, from 2001 to 2015. The overall precision of our 15-year land cover map simplifies 16 classes, which is 1.23% and 86.70% significantly maximum as compared to the precision of the MODIS data map. Findings of the past 15 years shows the changing detection that forest land, savanna, farmland, urban and established land, arid land, and cultivated land have increased; by contrast, woody prairie, open shrub-lands, permanent ice and snow, mixed forests, grasslands, evergreen broadleaf forests, permanent wetlands, and water bodies have been significantly reduced over South Asia regions.
