Abstract:In the turbulent environment that is now surrounding us, it has become obvious that the energy system cannot be treated in isolation, but within the context of a broader system which is the economy. Energy-economy models have thus attracted the attention of energy policy analysts, particularly in the last five years. This paper presents a critical review of some of the more recent models, and draws some conclusions on the actual and potential contribution of energy modelling in energy policy formulation. The first part of the paper presents a conceptual framework for energy-economy interactions. The process is described and key parameters are identified. The second part, after describing the general structure of energy-economy models and highlighting the basic structural components, reviews some representative models. The third part analyses the deficiencies of the models as forecasting devices and stresses their merits as tools for analysis in the energy policy formulation process.

Abstract:The current century—an era of environmental awareness—requires energy resources to satisfy the world's future energy demands. We can use current energy use scenarios to help us to understand how energy systems could change. Such scenarios are not an exercise in prophecy; rather they are designed to challenge our thinking in order to make better decisions today. The conventional modeling approach tends to extrapolate changes in energy consumption from historical trends; however, technology innovation sometimes causes drastic reforms in energy systems in the industrial, commercial, residential and transportation sectors. The economic aspects are another key issue to be considered in order to understand future changes in energy systems. The quantity of the energy supply is set to meet the price of the energy demand of end users. This occurs on the condition that the price of the energy supply equates with the price on the demand side under the market mechanism. This paper reviews the various issues associated with the energy-economic model and its application to national energy policies, renewable energy systems, and the global environment.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>Since the signing of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the United Nations Member States and the Yellow vest movement, it is clear that emission‐reducing policies should consider their distributional impacts to ensure a sustainable and equitable growth compatible with the Paris Agreement goals. To this end, the design of environmental and energy policies should be accompanied by an interdisciplinary analysis that includes potential effects on distinct groups of society (defined by income, age, or location), regions, and sectors. This work synthesizes common modeling frameworks used to assess technical, socio‐economic, and environmental aspects in policy analysis and the recent progress to portray distributional impacts in each of them. Furthermore, the main indicators produced by each method are highlighted and a critical review pointing to gaps and limitations that could be addressed by future research is presented.</p></section>

Abstract:This paper has reviewed the international research on the interactions between the Economy, Energy, and Environment (3E) in the 21st century. For this purpose, a bibliometric and cluster analysis by fractional accounting has been carried out based on the two most important databases: Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus. The research found and studied 2230 documents from the WoS Core Collection and 3,149 from Scopus. The results show a continuous increase in the number of articles that were published and citations during the whole period. They also showed that China and the United States (U.S.) were the most productive countries and there was a predominance of Asian organizations supporting and fostering researches. The main contribution of this article is the analysis of keywords from 2001 to 2018. The trends show that the main common elements are sustainable development and sustainability and they also include CO2 emissions and consumption. Future research in this field should address the energy transition issue in the area of sustainable development by adapting it to the restrictions of this economic model.

Abstract:<p>Energy system models are crucial to plan energy transition pathways and understand their impacts. A vast range of energy system modelling tools is available, providing modelling practitioners, planners, and decision-makers with multiple alternatives to represent the energy system according to different technical and methodological considerations. To better understand this landscape, here we identify current trends in the field of energy system modelling. First, we survey previous review studies, identifying their distinct focus areas and review methodologies. Second, we gather information about 54 energy system modelling tools directly from model developers and users. Unlike previous questionnaire-based studies solely focusing on technical descriptions, we include application aspects of the modelling tools, such as perceived policy-relevance, user accessibility, and model linkages. We find that, to assess the possible applications and to build a common understanding of the capabilities of these modelling tools, it is necessary to engage in dialogue with developers and users. We identify three main trends of increasing modelling of cross-sectoral synergies, growing focus on open access, and improved temporal detail to deal with planning future scenarios with high levels of variable renewable energy sources. However, key challenges remain in terms of representing high resolution energy demand in all sectors, understanding how tools are coupled together, openness and accessibility, and the level of engagement between tool developers and policy/decision-makers.</p>

Abstract:Energy models are used to inform and support decisions within the transition to climate neutrality. In recent years, such models have been criticised for being overly techno-centred and ignoring environmental and social factors of the energy transition. Here, we explore and illustrate the impact of ignoring such factors by comparing model results to model user needs and real-world observations. We firstly identify concrete user needs for better representation of environmental and social factors in energy modelling via interviews, a survey and a workshop. Secondly, we explore and illustrate the effects of omitting non-techno-economic factors in modelling by contrasting policy-targeted scenarios with reality in four EU case study examples. We show that by neglecting environmental and social factors, models risk generating overly optimistic and potentially misleading results, for example by suggesting transition speeds far exceeding any speeds observed, or pathways facing hard-to-overcome resource constraints. As such, modelled energy transition pathways that ignore such factors may be neither desirable nor feasible from an environmental and social perspective, and scenarios may be irrelevant in practice. Finally, we discuss a sample of recent energy modelling innovations and call for continued and increased efforts for improved approaches that better represent environmental and social factors in energy modelling and increase the relevance of energy models for informing policymaking.

Abstract:Energy system models are important tools to guide our understanding of current and future carbon dioxide emissions as well as to inform strategies for emissions reduction. These models offer a vital evidence base that increasingly underpins energy and climate policies in many countries. In light of this important role in policy formation, there is growing interest in, and demands for, energy modellers to integrate more diverse perspectives on possible and preferred futures into the modelling process. The main purpose of this is to ensure that the resultant policy decisions are both fairer and better reflect people's concerns and preferences. However, while there has been a focus in the literature on efforts to bring societal dimensions into modelling tools, there remains a limited number of examples of well-structured participatory energy systems modelling processes and no available how-to guidance. This paper addresses this gap by providing good practice guidance for integrating stakeholder and public involvement in energy systems modelling based on the reflections of a diverse range of experts from this emergent field. The framework outlined in this paper offers multiple entry points for modellers to incorporate participatory elements either throughout the process or in individual stages. Recognising the messiness of both fields (energy systems modelling and participatory research), the good practice principles are not comprehensive or set in stone, but rather pose important questions to steer this process. Finally, the reflections on key issues provide a summary of the crucial challenges and important areas for future research in this critical field.

Abstract:In our modern world, energy keeps the global economy running, and economic growth concerns are profoundly interrelated with environmental quality issues. Interestingly, scientists engage with empirical research to identify the impacts and causalities at the interface of economic activities, energy supply, and demand. The importance of the present study lies in a discussion of all contemporary research efforts bridging two strands of empirical literature in environmental economics: developments in energy growth nexus discussion and the environmental Kuznets curve. Furthermore, it highlights the inclusion of untested explanatory variables and the impacts on environmental degradation levels. In the context of the EKC hypothesis, the most popular indicators are greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and carbon dioxide emissions in conceptualizing environmental degradation. A review of relevant empirical studies disclosed additional research opportunities that can consider currently untested and less visible proxies of economic growth. For both strands in the literature, results differ based on the group of countries investigated, the econometric models adopted, the format of data, e.g., time series or panel analyses, the time frames due to data availability, and the proxies used to conceptualize energy, environmental degradation, and economic growth. Practical implications indicate that environmental degradation can be avoided or significantly limited within sustainable economic growth to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase the use of renewables in the energy mix. Furthermore, one particular implication is the concept of energy efficiency to reduce relevant demand to produce the same outcome or task.

Abstract:With less than 6 years left to achieve the global sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030, there is a growing urgency to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of policy actions by targeting multiple SDGs. Mathematical modeling tools facilitate sustainability assessment in support of integrated policymaking. This study examines the interlinkages between the SDGs with commonly used and broadly applicable energy system models (ESMs) using the 248 indicators defined by the United Nations. The SDGs are classified under the environment (SDGs 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15), economy (SDGs 8, 9, 10, 11, 17), and society (SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 16) domains governing the sustainability framework. The results ascertain that current ESMs are conceived to prioritize energy-related environmental indicators related to SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG13 (Climate Action) with limited focus on non-energy indicators of the environmental domain, along with little to no coverage of SDGs-indicators allocated within the economic and social domains, respectively. The findings call for expanding the frontiers of ESMs to incorporate emerging systemic interdependencies that extend beyond the traditional "energy-environmental" nexus considering the multi-dimensional facets of sustainable development. For this purpose, a conceptual integrated framework was developed underscoring procedural protocols and technical directives to advance the ESMs-SDGs modeling paradigm through the application of methodological improvement opportunities. Theoretical and practical implications driven by policy and managerial perspectives were also discussed. In closure, this study can inform stakeholders about the gaps (sustainability issues and corresponding targets-indicators) that are imperative to address in modeling the SDGs and how to leverage existing ESMs into integrating a broader range of SDGs beyond traditional considerations. The improved outcomes are expected to facilitate integrated sustainable policy planning and formulation in pursuit of operationalizing the SDGs for the timely attainment of the 2030 agenda.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Studies of genetic associations with common diseases, such as between cytokine gene polymorphisms and severe bacterial sepsis, have reached conflicting conclusions. Failure to follow methodologic standards may have contributed to discordant findings. The -308 G-->A transition in the tumor necrosis factor-alpha promoter has been genotyped by a variety of methods. Based on our observation of genotyping inaccuracies, we sought to determine whether published studies followed a series of acceptable methodologic standards and whether failure to follow the standard of genotyping reproducibility could lead to erroneous conclusions about gene-disease associations. DESIGN Systematic review and reanalysis of banked genetic material. We applied a published series of seven methodologic standards to five reports of the association between this variant and bacterial sepsis. We then studied the accuracy of restriction fragment length polymorphism for the -308 site using DNA from a cohort of injury victims. SETTING Surgery research laboratory. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS We observed that methodologic quality was not uniform and that reproducibility of genotyping was infrequently met. In our subjects, we found that 4 of 46 heterozygotes analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism were actually GG-homozygotes (9% misclassified) according to alternative genotyping methods. CONCLUSIONS Failure to confirm genotype may have led to conclusions that this polymorphism is not associated with sepsis or outcome. Our observations have implications for the conduct and evaluation of studies of complex genetic disease.

Abstract:Addressing four persistent problems, namely human-induced environmental change, financial instability, inequality and unemployment has now become an urgent necessity. To better grasp complex interactions between technological, financial and energy systems, we propose a formal behavioral-evolutionary macroeconomic model. It describes the coevolution of four populations, namely of heterogeneous consumers, producers, power plants and banks, interacting through interconnected networks. We examine how decisions by all these economic agents affect financial stability, the direction of technological change and energy use. The approach generates non-trivial, even surprising insights, such as that brand loyalty, captured by a network externality on the demand side, can increase the likelihood of bankruptcies of banks. Cascades of such bankruptcies are found to be more likely under greater income inequalities and higher electricity prices. We employ the model to assess macroeconomic impacts of sustainability policies along three dimensions: environmental effectiveness, financial stability and socio-economic consequences.

Abstract:Energy systems models are important methods used to generate a range of insight and analysis on the supply and demand of energy. Developed over the second half of the twentieth century, they are now seeing increased relevance in the face of stringent climate policy, energy security and economic development concerns, and increasing challenges due to the changing nature of the twenty-first century energy system. In this paper, we look particularly at models relevant to national and international energy policy, grouping them into four categories: energy systems optimization models, energy systems simulation models, power systems and electricity market models, and qualitative and mixed-methods scenarios. We examine four challenges they face and the efforts being taken to address them: (1) resolving time and space, (2) balancing uncertainty and transparency, (3) addressing the growing complexity of the energy system, and (4) integrating human behavior and social risks and opportunities. In discussing these challenges, we present possible avenues for future research and make recommendations to ensure the continued relevance for energy systems models as important sources of information for policy-making.

Abstract:Background: The transition to a climate neutral society such as that envisaged in the European Union Green Deal requires careful and comprehensive planning. Integrated assessment models (IAMs) and energy system optimisation models (ESOMs) are both commonly used for policy advice and in the process of policy design. In Europe, a vast landscape of these models has emerged and both kinds of models have been part of numerous model comparison and model linking exercises. However, IAMs and ESOMs have rarely been compared or linked with one another. Methods: This study conducts an explorative comparison and identifies possible flows of information between 11 of the integrated assessment and energy system models in the European Climate and Energy Modelling Forum. The study identifies and compares regional aggregations and commonly reported variables. We define harmonised regions and a subset of shared result variables that enable the comparison of scenario results across the models. Results: The results highlight how power generation and demand development are related and driven by regional and sectoral drivers. They also show that demand developments like for hydrogen can be linked with power generation potentials such as onshore wind power. Lastly, the results show that the role of nuclear power is related to the availability of wind resources. Conclusions: This comparison and analysis of modelling results across model type boundaries provides modellers and policymakers with a better understanding of how to interpret both IAM and ESOM results. It also highlights the need for community standards for region definitions and information about reported variables to facilitate future comparisons of this kind. The comparison shows that regional aggregations might conceal differences within regions that are potentially of interest for national policy makers thereby indicating a need for national-level analysis.

Abstract:There has been analyzed a decisive role of negative impact of human factors on the processes of nature management and environmental pollution by the remnants of ECONOMIC-MATHEMATICAL MODELING Issue II (82), 2021 81 production activities, which in case of neglect lead to environmental crises, climate change and significant deterioration of the quality of human life. The urgency of the problem of economy ecologization, the mechanisms of ecologization associated with the introduction of technologies that are waste-free or most closely approximate to them, with the development of environmental education, culture, scientific and information support of society in its quest to create environmentally safe living space and, also, the need to balance its socio-economic and environmental characteristics have been disclosed. These characteristics a priori suggest that in modern conditions economy and ecology are closely interrelated, therefore, any economy or economic system should be understood as a single integral ecological-economic system which, in contrast to its constituent subsystems, has some peculiarities inherent only to it. The complexity of the ecological and economic system as an object of research requires the development of a new research methodology that combines a set of principles, methods and tools of scientific knowledge used in various scientific fields. There has been developed dynamic model of a one-sector economy, in which, in addition to the production of basic aggregative products, industrial waste utilization is also carried out. The formalization of the model also takes into account the socio-economic clustering of society, makes it possible to identify groups of production owners and workers in the model and describe the dynamics of their liquid savings, whose role in the functioning of the economy is fundamentally important. In addition to these values, the model variables also include the price of basic products, the tariff for the disposal of production residues and the volume of environmental pollution by non-utilized waste. Taken together, all variable models form the phase space of the trajectories of the ecological-economic dynamics. The model is designed for a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the dynamics of ecological-economic systems of the described type. The research of such dynamics is possible in the mode of simulation experiments with a model, the results of which make it possible to identify general trends and patterns of development of a one-sector economy in terms of its ecologization and socio-economic clustering. The features and characteristics established as a result of experimental studies with the model can serve as an important information support for the development of scenarios of ecological-economic development and management decision on the functioning and dynamics of ecological-economic systems in real practice.

Abstract:The growing complexities of energy systems, environmental problems, and technology markets are driving and testing most energy-economy models to their limits. To further advance bottom-up models from a multidisciplinary energy efficiency policy evaluation perspective, we review and critically analyze bottom-up energy-economy models and corresponding evaluation studies on energy efficiency policies to induce technological change. We use the household sector as a case study. Our analysis focuses on decision frameworks for technology choice, type of evaluation being carried out, treatment of market and behavioral failures, evaluated policy instruments, and key determinants used to mimic policy instruments. Although the review confirms criticism related to energy-economy models (e.g., unrealistic representation of decision making by consumers when choosing technologies), they provide valuable guidance for policy evaluation related to energy efficiency. Different areas to further advance models remain open, particularly related to modeling issues, techno-economic and environmental aspects, behavioral determinants, and policy considerations.

Abstract:We present a model of an economy inspired by individual based model approaches in evolutionary ecology. We demonstrate that evolutionary dynamics in a space of companies interconnected through a correlated interaction matrix produces time dependencies of the total size of the economy, total number of companies, companies’ age and capital distribution that compares well with statistics for the USA. We discuss the relevance of our modeling framework to policy making.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a novel application of an energy systems engineering framework towards the optimal design of such energy systems with improved energy efficiency and environmental performance. The framework features a superstructure representation of the various energy technology alternatives, a mixed-integer optimization formulation of the energy systems design problem, and a multi-objective design optimization solution strategy, where economic and environmental criteria are simultaneously considered and properly traded off. A case study of a supermarket energy systems design is presented to illustrate the key steps and potential of the proposed energy systems engineering approach.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors discuss energy sources, highlighting their impact on the environment and on human beings, their influence in economy and finance and on relations between governments. They attempt to analyse whether the above factors together can lead to a negative impact on health, defined as an individual's "complete physical social and psychological well being". The role of petroleum in the world economy is understandable if one considers that energy, heat, light, electricity, transportation and large part of mass production are all dependent on this energy resource. From petroleum one obtains fuel, fertilizers, pesticides, plastic, pharmaceutical products and clothing. Petroleum has become increasingly important in conjunction with expanding globalization and consumerism and the continuous growth of demand for petroleum has led to a corresponding decrease in its production and availability and an increase in its cost, all factors which have led to strong tensions between world States. The authors discuss sea and air pollution and global warming, citing some of the most relevant climatic incidents of recent years and tracing the most important events regarding attempts to contain pollution. They highlight the impact of contaminants such as greenhou se gases, electromagnetic pollution, synthetic chemicals, domestic, industrial and electronic waste products, responsible, according to neo-Lamarckian evolutionists, for the increasing incidence of chronic degenerative diseases. In conclusion the authors stress that there is a need to pursue energy efficiency while awaiting that world States succeed in their common objective of adopting new energy policies, with the use of clean energy at low cost.
