Abstract:Arctic wetlands are known methane (CH 4 ) emitters but recent studies suggest that the Arctic CH 4 sink strength may be underestimated. Here we explore the capacity of well-drained Arctic soils to consume atmospheric CH 4 using >40,000 hourly flux observations and spatially distributed flux measurements from 4 sites and 14 surface types. While consumption of atmospheric CH 4 occurred at all sites at rates of 0.092 ± 0.011 mgCH 4 m −2 h −1 (mean ± s.e.), CH 4 uptake displayed distinct diel and seasonal patterns reflecting ecosystem respiration. Combining in situ flux data with laboratory investigations and a machine learning approach, we find biotic drivers to be highly important. Soil moisture outweighed temperature as an abiotic control and higher CH 4 uptake was linked to increased availability of labile carbon. Our findings imply that soil drying and enhanced nutrient supply will promote CH 4 uptake by Arctic soils, providing a negative feedback to global climate change.

Abstract:Abstract. Understanding the processes that influence and control carbon cycling in Arctic tundra ecosystems is essential for making accurate predictions about what role these ecosystems will play in potential future climate change scenarios. Particularly, air–surface fluxes of methane and carbon dioxide are of interest as recent observations suggest that the vast stores of soil carbon found in the Arctic tundra are becoming more available to release to the atmosphere in the form of these greenhouse gases. Further, harsh wintertime conditions and complex logistics have limited the number of year-round and cold-season studies and hence too our understanding of carbon cycle processes during these periods. We present here a two-year micrometeorological data set of methane and carbon dioxide fluxes, along with supporting soil pore gas profiles, that provide near-continuous data throughout the active summer and cold winter seasons. Net emission of methane and carbon dioxide in one of the study years totalled 3.7 and 89 g C m−2 a−1 respectively, with cold-season methane emission representing 54 % of the annual total. In the other year, net emission totals of methane and carbon dioxide were 4.9 and 485 g C m−2 a−1 respectively, with cold-season methane emission here representing 82 % of the annual total – a larger proportion than has been previously reported in the Arctic tundra. Regression tree analysis suggests that, due to relatively warmer air temperatures and deeper snow depths, deeper soil horizons – where most microbial methanogenic activity takes place – remained warm enough to maintain efficient methane production whilst surface soil temperatures were simultaneously cold enough to limit microbial methanotrophic activity. These results provide valuable insight into how a changing Arctic climate may impact methane emission, and highlight a need to focus on soil temperatures throughout the entire active soil profile, rather than rely on air temperature as a proxy for modelling temperature–methane flux dynamics.

Abstract:Methane emissions from organic-rich soils in the Arctic have been extensively studied due to their potential to increase the atmospheric methane burden as permafrost thaws<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR3">3</a>. However, this methane source might have been overestimated without considering high-affinity methanotrophs (HAMs; methane-oxidizing bacteria) recently identified in Arctic mineral soils<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR7">7</a>. Herein we find that integrating the dynamics of HAMs and methanogens into a biogeochemistry model<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR10">10</a> that includes permafrost soil organic carbon dynamics<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR3">3</a> leads to the upland methane sink doubling (~5.5 Tg CH4 yr−1) north of 50 °N in simulations from 2000–2016. The increase is equivalent to at least half of the difference in net methane emissions estimated between process-based models and observation-based inversions<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR12">12</a>, and the revised estimates better match site-level and regional observations<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR13">13</a>,<a href="#ref-CR14">14</a>,<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR15">15</a>. The new model projects doubled wetland methane emissions between 2017–2100 due to more accessible permafrost carbon<a href="#ref-CR16">16</a>,<a href="#ref-CR17">17</a>,<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR18">18</a>. However, most of the increase in wetland emissions is offset by a concordant increase in the upland sink, leading to only an 18% increase in net methane emission (from 29 to 35 Tg CH4 yr−1). The projected net methane emissions may decrease further due to different physiological responses between HAMs and methanogens in response to increasing temperature<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR19">19</a>,<a href="/articles/s41558-020-0734-z#ref-CR20">20</a>.

Much stronger tundra methane emissions during autumn freeze than spring thaw

Abstract:Warming in the Arctic has been more apparent in the non-growing season than in the typical growing season. In this context, methane (CH4 ) emissions in the non-growing season, particularly in the shoulder seasons, account for a substantial proportion of the annual budget. However, CH4 emissions in spring and autumn shoulders are often underestimated by land models and measurements due to limited data availability and unknown mechanisms. This study investigates CH4 emissions during spring thaw and autumn freeze using eddy covariance CH4 measurements from three Arctic sites with multi-year observations. We find that the shoulder seasons contribute to about a quarter (25.6 ± 2.3%, mean ± SD) of annual total CH4 emissions. Our study highlights the three to four times higher contribution of autumn freeze CH4 emission to total annual emission than that of spring thaw. Autumn freeze exhibits significantly higher CH4 flux (0.88 ± 0.03 mg m-2 hr-1 ) than spring thaw (0.48 ± 0.04 mg m-2 hr-1 ). The mean duration of autumn freeze (58.94 ± 26.39 days) is significantly longer than that of spring thaw (20.94 ± 7.79 days), which predominates the much higher cumulative CH4 emission during autumn freeze (1,212.31 ± 280.39 mg m-2 year-1 ) than that during spring thaw (307.39 ± 46.11 mg m-2 year-1 ). Near-surface soil temperatures cannot completely reflect the freeze-thaw processes in deeper soil layers and appears to have a hysteresis effect on CH4 emissions from early spring thaw to late autumn freeze. Therefore, it is necessary to consider commonalities and differences in CH4 emissions during spring thaw versus autumn freeze to accurately estimate CH4 source from tundra ecosystems for evaluating carbon-climate feedback in Arctic.

Abstract:Wetland methane (CH 4 ) emissions over the Boreal–Arctic region are vulnerable to climate change and linked to climate feedbacks, yet understanding of their long-term dynamics remains uncertain. Here, we upscaled and analysed two decades (2002–2021) of Boreal–Arctic wetland CH 4 emissions, representing an unprecedented compilation of eddy covariance and chamber observations. We found a robust increasing trend of CH 4 emissions (+8.9%) with strong inter-annual variability. The majority of emission increases occurred in early summer (June and July) and were mainly driven by warming (52.3%) and ecosystem productivity (40.7%). Moreover, a 2 °C temperature anomaly in 2016 led to the highest recorded annual CH 4 emissions (22.3 Tg CH 4 yr −1 ) over this region, driven primarily by high emissions over Western Siberian lowlands. However, current-generation models from the Global Carbon Project failed to capture the emission magnitude and trend, and may bias the estimates in future wetland CH 4 emission driven by amplified Boreal–Arctic warming and greening.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Aims</h3>Soils of northern latitude tundra ecosystems have accumulated large amounts of carbon that might be released as CO2 when temperature rises and the tree-line moves north. We aim to investigate the potential CO2 flux changes at a subarctic tundra heath under changing climate.<h3 class="Heading">Methods</h3>We measured daytime ecosystem respiration and photosynthesis at a subarctic heath over a full year under ambient conditions and in factorial long-term (13 years) increased summer temperature and leaf litter addition plots, and in additional short-term (2 years) summer warming plots.<h3 class="Heading">Results</h3>Under ambient conditions the ecosystem was a daytime sink of CO2 in the five warmest months, but a net daytime source in the cold season. Thirteen years of summer warming by 1 °C at soil surface increased CO2 emissions, as daytime respiration increased by 37% and photosynthesis by 29% over the year. Short-term warming likewise increased fluxes. Litter addition also increased the emission of CO2 as ecosystem respiration rose by 21% but photosynthesis remained unchanged. Both warming and litter addition significantly enhanced the amount of green biomass.<h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3>This study suggests that in a changed climate subarctic ecosystems will act as a positive feedback source of atmospheric CO2. It shows the significance of CO2 fluxes outside the growing season and demonstrates a cold-season long- but not short-term legacy effect of increased summer warming on CO2 emission.

Abstract:At the southern margin of permafrost in North America, climate change causes widespread permafrost thaw. In boreal lowlands, thawing forested permafrost peat plateaus ('forest') lead to expansion of permafrost-free wetlands ('wetland'). Expanding wetland area with saturated and warmer organic soils is expected to increase landscape methane (CH4 ) emissions. Here, we quantify the thaw-induced increase in CH4 emissions for a boreal forest-wetland landscape in the southern Taiga Plains, Canada, and evaluate its impact on net radiative forcing relative to potential long-term net carbon dioxide (CO2 ) exchange. Using nested wetland and landscape eddy covariance net CH4 flux measurements in combination with flux footprint modeling, we find that landscape CH4 emissions increase with increasing wetland-to-forest ratio. Landscape CH4 emissions are most sensitive to this ratio during peak emission periods, when wetland soils are up to 10 °C warmer than forest soils. The cumulative growing season (May-October) wetland CH4 emission of ~13 g CH4 m-2 is the dominating contribution to the landscape CH4 emission of ~7 g CH4 m-2 . In contrast, forest contributions to landscape CH4 emissions appear to be negligible. The rapid wetland expansion of 0.26 ± 0.05% yr-1 in this region causes an estimated growing season increase of 0.034 ± 0.007 g CH4 m-2 yr-1 in landscape CH4 emissions. A long-term net CO2 uptake of >200 g CO2 m-2 yr-1 is required to offset the positive radiative forcing of increasing CH4 emissions until the end of the 21st century as indicated by an atmospheric CH4 and CO2 concentration model. However, long-term apparent carbon accumulation rates in similar boreal forest-wetland landscapes and eddy covariance landscape net CO2 flux measurements suggest a long-term net CO2 uptake between 49 and 157 g CO2 m-2 yr-1 . Thus, thaw-induced CH4 emission increases likely exert a positive net radiative greenhouse gas forcing through the 21st century.

Abstract:Arctic warming causes permafrost thaw and accelerates microbial decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) to carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). The determining factors for the ratio between CO2 and CH4 formation are still not well understood, due to scarce in situ measurements, particularly in remote arctic regions. We quantified the CO2:CH4 ratios of SOM decomposition in wet and dry tundra soils by using CO2 fluxes from clipped plots and in situ CH4 fluxes from vegetated plots. At the water‐saturated site, CO2:CH4 ratios decreased sharply from 95 at beginning of July to about 10 in August and September with a median of 12.2 (7.70 ‐ 17.1; 25%‐75% quartiles) over the whole vegetation period. When considering CH4 oxidation, estimated to reduce in situ CH4 fluxes by 10 ‐ 31%, even lower CO2:CH4 ratios were calculated (median 10.9 ‐ 8.41). Active layer depth and soil temperature were the main factors controlling these ratios. Methane production was associated with subsoil (40 cm) temperature, while heterotrophic respiration was related to topsoil (5 cm) temperatures. As expected, CO2:CH4 ratios were substantially higher at the dry site (median 373, 292 ‐ 500, 25%‐75% quartiles). Both tundra types lost carbon preferentially in form of CO2 (Rh), and CH4‐C represented only 0.27% of the dry tundra total carbon loss and 6.91% of the wet tundra total carbon loss. The current study demonstrates the dynamic of in situ CO2:CH4 ratios from SOM decomposition and will help improve simulations of future CO2 and CH4 fluxes from thawing tundra soils.

Abstract:The long-term net sink of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the northern permafrost region is projected to weaken or shift under climate change. But large uncertainties remain, even on present-day GHG budgets. We compare bottom-up (data-driven upscaling, process-based models) and top-down budgets (atmospheric inversion models) of the main GHGs (CO2, CH4, and N2O) and lateral fluxes of C and N across the region over 2000-2020. Bottom-up approaches estimate higher land to atmosphere fluxes for all GHGs compared to top-down atmospheric inversions. Both bottom-up and top-down approaches respectively show a net sink of CO2 in natural ecosystems (-31 (-667, 559) and -587 (-862, -312), respectively) but sources of CH4 (38 (23, 53) and 15 (11, 18) Tg CH4-C yr-1) and N2O (0.6 (0.03, 1.2) and 0.09 (-0.19, 0.37) Tg N2O-N yr-1) in natural ecosystems. Assuming equal weight to bottom-up and top-down budgets and including anthropogenic emissions, the combined GHG budget is a source of 147 (-492, 759) Tg CO2-Ceq yr-1 (GWP100). A net CO2 sink in boreal forests and wetlands is offset by CO2 emissions from inland waters and CH4 emissions from wetlands and inland waters, with a smaller additional warming from N2O emissions. Priorities for future research include representation of inland waters in process-based models and compilation of process-model ensembles for CH4 and N2O. Discrepancies between bottom-up and top-down methods call for analyses of how prior flux ensembles impact inversion budgets, more in-situ flux observations and improved resolution in upscaling.
Impact of three decades of warming, increased nutrient availability, and increased cloudiness on the fluxes of greenhouse gases and biogenic volatile organic compounds in a subarctic tundra heath

Abstract:We showed enhanced methane uptake under warming and shading (simulating increased cloudiness), increased carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions under warming and increased nutrient availability, and increased isoprene emissions under warming in a subarctic heath exposed to more than three decades of climate change related manipulations of temperature, nutrient addition, and light. Our results indicate that the rapidly changing climate, associated with increasing temperatures, nutrient availability, and cloud cover, in the northern high latitudes will alter the ecosystem‐atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases and atmospherically reactive biogenic volatile organic compounds with important feedback implications for the climate, atmosphere, and ecosystem processes in these regions. Climate change is exposing subarctic ecosystems to higher temperatures, increased nutrient availability, and increasing cloud cover. In this study, we assessed how these factors affect the fluxes of greenhouse gases (GHGs) (i.e., methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2)), and biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in a subarctic mesic heath subjected to 34 years of climate change related manipulations of temperature, nutrient availability, and light. GHGs were sampled from static chambers and gases analyzed with gas chromatograph. BVOCs were measured using the push‐pull method and gases analyzed with chromatography–mass spectrometry. The soil temperature and moisture content in the warmed and shaded plots did not differ significantly from that in the controls during GHG and BVOC measurements. Also, the enclosure temperatures during BVOC measurements in the warmed and shaded plots did not differ significantly from temperatures in the controls. Hence, this allowed for assessment of long‐term effects of the climate treatment manipulations without interference of temperature and moisture differences at the time of measurements. Warming enhanced CH4 uptake and the emissions of CO2, N2O, and isoprene. Increased nutrient availability increased the emissions of CO2 and N2O but caused no significant changes in the fluxes of CH4 and BVOCs. Shading (simulating increased cloudiness) enhanced CH4 uptake but caused no significant changes in the fluxes of other gases compared to the controls. The results show that climate warming and increased cloudiness will enhance CH4 sink strength of subarctic mesic heath ecosystems, providing negative climate feedback, while climate warming and enhanced nutrient availability will provide positive climate feedback through increased emissions of CO2 and N2O. Climate warming will also indirectly, through vegetation changes, increase the amount of carbon lost as isoprene from subarctic ecosystems.

Abstract:Warming temperatures in continuous permafrost zones of the Arctic will alter both hydrological and geochemical soil conditions, which are strongly linked with heterotrophic microbial carbon (C) cycling. Heterogeneous permafrost landscapes are often dominated by polygonal features formed by expanding ice wedges: water accumulates in low centered polygons (LCPs), and water drains outward to surrounding troughs in high centered polygons (HCPs). These geospatial differences in hydrology cause gradients in biogeochemistry, soil C storage potential, and thermal properties. Presently, data quantifying carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) release from HCP soils are needed to support modeling and evaluation of warming-induced CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes from tundra soils. This study quantifies the distribution of microbial CO 2 and CH 4 release in HCPs over a range of temperatures and draws comparisons to previous LCP studies. Arctic tundra soils were initially characterized for geochemical and hydraulic properties. Laboratory incubations at −2, +4, and +8°C were used to quantify temporal trends in CO 2 and CH 4 production from homogenized active layer organic and mineral soils in HCP centers and troughs, and methanogen abundance was estimated from mcrA gene measurements. Results showed that soil water availability, organic C, and redox conditions influence temporal dynamics and magnitude of gas production from HCP active layer soils during warming. At early incubation times (2–9 days), higher CO 2 emissions were observed from HCP trough soils than from HCP center soils, but increased CO 2 production occurred in center soils at later times (>20 days). HCP center soils did not support methanogenesis, but CH 4 -producing trough soils did indicate methanogen presence. Consistent with previous LCP studies, HCP organic soils showed increased CO 2 and CH 4 production with elevated water content, but HCP trough mineral soils produced more CH 4 than LCP mineral soils. HCP mineral soils also released substantial CO 2 but did not show a strong trend in CO 2 and CH 4 release with water content. Knowledge of temporal and spatial variability in microbial C mineralization rates of Arctic soils in response to warming are key to constraining uncertainties in predictive climate models.

Abstract:Releases of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) from thawing permafrost are expected to be among the largest feedbacks to climate from arctic ecosystems. However, the current net carbon (C) balance of terrestrial arctic ecosystems is unknown. Recent studies suggest that these ecosystems are sources, sinks, or approximately in balance at present. This uncertainty arises because there are few long-term continuous measurements of arctic tundra CO2 fluxes over the full annual cycle. Here, we describe a pattern of CO2 loss based on the longest continuous record of direct measurements of CO2 fluxes in the Alaskan Arctic, from two representative tundra ecosystems, wet sedge and heath tundra. We also report on a shorter time series of continuous measurements from a third ecosystem, tussock tundra. The amount of CO2 loss from both heath and wet sedge ecosystems was related to the timing of freeze-up of the soil active layer in the fall. Wet sedge tundra lost the most CO2 during the anomalously warm autumn periods of September–December 2013–2015, with CH4 emissions contributing little to the overall C budget. Losses of C translated to approximately 4.1 and 1.4% of the total soil C stocks in active layer of the wet sedge and heath tundra, respectively, from 2008 to 2015. Increases in air temperature and soil temperatures at all depths may trigger a new trajectory of CO2 release, which will be a significant feedback to further warming if it is representative of larger areas of the Arctic.

Abstract:Rapid warming in the Arctic has the potential to release vast reservoirs of carbon into the atmosphere as methane (CH 4 ) resulting in a strong positive climate feedback. This raises the concern that, after a period of near-zero growth in atmospheric CH 4 burden from 1999 to 2006, the increase since then may be in part related to increased Arctic emissions. Measurements of CH 4 in background air samples provide useful, direct information to determine if Arctic CH 4 emissions are increasing. One sensitive first-order indicator for large emission change is the Interpolar Difference, that is the difference in surface atmospheric annual means between polar northern and southern zones (53°–90°), which has varied interannually, but did not increase from 1992 to 2019. The Interpolar Difference has increased moderately during 2020–2022 when the global CH 4 burden increased significantly, but not yet to its peak values in the late-1980s. For quantitative assessment of changing Arctic CH 4 emissions, the atmospheric measurements must be combined with an atmospheric tracer transport model. Based on multiple studies including some using CH 4 isotopes, it is clear that most of the increase in global atmospheric CH 4 burden is driven by increased emissions from microbial sources in the tropics, and that Arctic emissions have not increased significantly since the beginning of our measurement record in 1983 through 2022.

Abstract:The rapid warming of the Arctic-Boreal region has led to the concern that large amounts of methane may be released to the atmosphere from its carbon-rich soils, as well as subsea permafrost, amplifying climate change. In this review, we assess the various sources and sinks of methane from northern high latitudes, in particular those that may be enhanced by permafrost thaw. The largest terrestrial sources of the Arctic-Boreal region are its numerous wetlands, lakes, rivers and streams. However, fires, geological seeps and glacial margins can be locally strong emitters. In addition, dry upland soils are an important sink of atmospheric methane. We estimate that the net emission of all these landforms and point sources may be as much as 48.7 [13.3–86.9] Tg CH4 yr−1. The Arctic Ocean is also a net source of methane to the atmosphere, in particular its shallow shelves, but we assess that the marine environment emits a fraction of what is released from the terrestrial domain: 4.9 [0.4–19.4] Tg CH4 yr−1. While it appears unlikely that emissions from the ocean surface to the atmosphere are increasing, now or in the foreseeable future, evidence points towards a modest increase from terrestrial sources over the past decades, in particular wetlands and possibly lakes. The influence of permafrost thaw on future methane emissions may be strongest through associated changes in the hydrology of the landscape rather than the availability of previously frozen carbon. Although high latitude methane sources are not yet acting as a strong climate feedback, they might play an increasingly important role in the net greenhouse gas balance of the Arctic-Boreal region with continued climate change.

Abstract:Claudia Czimczik from the University of California, Irvine, Jeffrey Welker from the University of Alaska and the University of Oulu, Finland, and colleagues investigated the impact of snow depth on carbon emissions from a tussock tundra site where an experiment increased snow cover over 25 years in Arctic Alaska. They find that the increased snow cover turned the site into a carbon source year round, making about four times more carbon accessible to microbial degradation — in particular older legacy carbon as determined by 14 C ageing. Although the snow cover led to shrub expansion, which increased carbon uptake during the growing season, it also insulated soil temperatures during the winter, which amplified winter carbon losses. These results point to the potential for a positive feedback between snow cover and carbon emissions from the Arctic under warming.

Abstract:Boreal‐Arctic regions are key stores of organic carbon (C) and play a major role in the greenhouse gas balance of high‐latitude ecosystems. The carbon‐climate (C‐climate) feedback potential of northern high‐latitude ecosystems remains poorly understood due to uncertainty in temperature and precipitation controls on carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake and the decomposition of soil C into CO2 and methane (CH4) fluxes. While CH4 fluxes account for a smaller component of the C balance, the climatic impact of CH4 outweighs CO2 (28‐34 times larger Global Warming Potential on a 100‐year scale), highlighting the need to jointly resolve the climatic sensitivities of both CO2 and CH4. Here we jointly constrain a terrestrial biosphere model with in situ CO2 and CH4 flux observations at seven eddy covariance sites using a data‐model integration approach to resolve the integrated environmental controls on land‐atmosphere CO2 and CH4 exchanges in Alaska. Based on the combined CO2 and CH4 flux responses to climate variables, we find that 1970‐present climate trends will induce positive C‐climate feedback at all tundra sites, and negative C‐climate feedback at the boreal and shrub fen sites. The positive C‐climate feedback at the tundra sites is predominantly driven by increased CH4 emissions while the negative C‐climate feedback at the boreal site is predominantly driven by increased CO2 uptake (80% from decreased heterotrophic respiration, and 20% from increased photosynthesis). Our study demonstrates the need for joint observational constraints on CO2 and CH4 biogeochemical processes – and their associated climatic sensitivities – for resolving the sign and magnitude of high‐latitude ecosystem C‐climate feedback in the coming decades. Abstract:Annual glacier melting alters hydrothermal conditions of the foreland alpine meadows, and causes significant fluctuations in methane (CH4) flux. Previously we found that Tibetan glacier foreland alpine meadow shifts to CH4 source from sink during the melting season, but the potential mechanisms remain unclear. This study, via combination of in-situ measurement of seasonal CH4 flux and survey of microbial species that may involve in CH4 metabolism, explores the causes of glacier melting on CH4 flux in a glacier foreland alpine meadow on Tibetan Plateau. We determined a pronounced CH4 emission (13.95 μg·m-2·h-1) in August (melting season) but CH4 uptake in June (-3.76 μg·m-2·h-1) and October (-17.77 μg·m-2·h-1), and 1.4-fold higher soil moisture in August than the other two months. This showed a direct correlation of CH4 flux with glacier melting increased soil water. Additionally, glacier melting caused more CH4 fluxes increase in hollows than in hummocks. Amplicon sequencing determined 126-fold higher abundance of mcrA, the methanogenic marker gene, in August than in June and October, and a higher relative abundance of a fungal phylum Mortierellomycota and syntrophic bacteria that convert the fatty acids, the degradation intermediates of organic complexes to CO2 and acetate, the methanogenic substrates like in August. However, no seasonal variation of pmoA, the marker gene of aerobic methanotrophs, was observed. It appears that glacier melting promotes the CH4 producing but not the consuming microorganisms, thus leading to increased CH4 emission. The findings of this work indicate that global warming resulted glacier melting would increase global CH4 emissions, and in turn worsens global warming, so an alarming positive feedback loop.

Abstract:Abstract. Arctic terrestrial greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) play an important role in the global GHG budget. However, these GHG fluxes are rarely studied simultaneously, and our understanding of the conditions controlling them across spatial gradients is limited. Here, we explore the magnitudes and drivers of GHG fluxes across fine-scale terrestrial gradients during the peak growing season (July) in sub-Arctic Finland. We measured chamber-derived GHG fluxes and soil temperature, soil moisture, soil organic carbon and nitrogen stocks, soil pH, soil carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio, soil dissolved organic carbon content, vascular plant biomass, and vegetation type from 101 plots scattered across a heterogeneous tundra landscape (5 km2). We used these field data together with high-resolution remote sensing data to develop machine learning models for predicting (i.e., upscaling) daytime GHG fluxes across the landscape at 2 m resolution. Our results show that this region was on average a daytime net GHG sink during the growing season. Although our results suggest that this sink was driven by CO2 uptake, it also revealed small but widespread CH4 uptake in upland vegetation types, almost surpassing the high wetland CH4 emissions at the landscape scale. Average N2O fluxes were negligible. CO2 fluxes were controlled primarily by annual average soil temperature and biomass (both increase net sink) and vegetation type, CH4 fluxes by soil moisture (increases net emissions) and vegetation type, and N2O fluxes by soil C/N (lower C/N increases net source). These results demonstrate the potential of high spatial resolution modeling of GHG fluxes in the Arctic. They also reveal the dominant role of CO2 fluxes across the tundra landscape but suggest that CH4 uptake in dry upland soils might play a significant role in the regional GHG budget.

Abstract:The frequency and severity of fire is increasing in Arctic tundra regions with climate change. Here we investigated effects of experimental low-intensity fire and shrub cutting, in combination with warming, on soil biogeochemical cycles and post-fire greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a dry heath tundra, West Greenland. We performed in vitro incubation experiments based on soil samples collected for up to two years after the fire. We observed tendency for increased soil nitrate (14-fold) and significant increases in soil ammonium and phosphate (four-fold and five-fold, respectively) two years after the fire, but no effects of shrub cutting on these compounds. Thus, changes appear to be largely due to fire effects rather than indirect effects by vegetation destruction. Two years after fire, nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) production was significantly increased (three-fold and 32% higher, respectively), in burned than unburned soils, while methane (CH4) uptake remained unchanged. This stimulated N2O and CO2 production by the fire, however, was only apparent under conditions when soil was at maximum water holding capacity, suggesting that fire effects can be masked under dry conditions in this tundra ecosystem. There were positive effects by modest 2.5 °C warming on CO2 production in control but not in burned soils, suggesting that fire may decrease the temperature response in soil respiration. Methane uptake was neither altered by the modest warming in shrub-cut nor in burned soils after two years, suggesting that the removal of vegetation may play a key role in controlling future temperature response of CH4 oxidation. Altogether, our results show that post-fire tundra soils have the potential to enhance soil GHG emissions (e.g. N2O and CO2) especially during episodes with wet soil conditions. On the other hand, the lack of warming responses in post-fire soil respiration may weaken this positive feedback to climate change.

Abstract:Future Arctic tundra primary productivity and vegetation community composition will partly be determined by nitrogen (N) availability in a warmer climate. N mineralization rates are predicted to increase in both winter and summer, but because N demand and –mobility varies across seasons, the fate of mineralized N remains uncertain. N mineralized in winter is released in a “pulse” upon snowmelt and soil thaw, with the potential for lateral redistribution in the landscape. In summer, the release is into an active rhizosphere with high local biological N demand. In this study, we investigated the ecosystem sensitivity to increased lateral N input and near-surface warming, respectively and in combination, with a numerical ecosystem model (CoupModel) parameterized to simulate ecosystem biogeochemistry for a tundra heath ecosystem in West Greenland. Both measurements and model results indicated that plants were poor utilizers of increased early-season lateral N input, indicating that higher winter N mineralization rates may have limited impact on plant growth and carbon (C) sequestration for a hillslope ecosystem. The model further suggested that, although deciduous shrubs were the plant type with overall most lateral N gain, evergreen shrubs appear to have a comparative advantage utilizing early-season N. In contrast, near-surface summer warming increased plant biomass and N uptake, moving N from soil to plant N pools, and offered an advantage to deciduous plants. Neither simulated high lateral N fluxes nor near-surface soil warming suggests that mesic tundra heaths will be important sources of N2O under warmer conditions. Our work highlights how winter and summer warming may play different roles in tundra ecosystem N and C budgets depending on plant community composition.
