Abstract:Background: Vibrio vulnificus infection in persons with B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) or hypogammaglobulinemia has been reported infrequently. Patient and Methods: A woman with B-CLL, hypogammaglobulinemia, and hepatic cirrhosis died of V. vulnificus bacteremia after eating cooked shrimp and crabs. We reviewed host and exposure data in 252 cases of V. vulnificus infection reported in Louisiana during the interval of 1980 through 2004. Results: V. vulnificus was isolated from blood in 122 cases (48.8%). Preexisting conditions in 138 cases included liver disease (41.3%), malignancy (13.8%), and immunosuppression (9.4%). The prevalence of preexisting conditions was significantly greater in cases with positive blood cultures than in cases with positive wound or stool cultures. Exposure data in 116 cases revealed crab consumption without raw oyster consumption or seawater exposure in 3.4%. Conclusion: The present patient had several conditions associated with increased risk of V. vulnificus infection and bacteremia, especially hepatic cirrhosis, but her route of exposure to V. vulnificus was unusual.

Abstract:Over the past 100 years, extensive oxidation of As-bearing sulfide-rich tailings from the abandoned Long Lake Gold Mine (Canada) has resulted in the formation of acid mine drainage (pH 2.0–3.9) containing high concentrations of dissolved As (∼400 mg L −1 ), SO 4 2- , Fe and other metals. Dissolved As is predominantly present as As(III), with increased As(V) near the tailings surface. Pore-gas O 2 is depleted to < 1 vol% in the upper 30–80 cm of the tailings profile. The primary sulfides, pyrite and arsenopyrite, are highly oxidized in the upper portions of the tailings. Elevated proportions of sulfide-oxidizing prokaryotes are present in this zone (mean 32.3% of total reads). The tailings are underlain by sediments rich in organic C. Enrichment in δ 34 S-SO 4 in pore-water samples in the organic C-rich zone is consistent with dissimilatory sulfate reduction. Synchrotron-based spectroscopy indicates an abundance of ferric arsenate phases near the impoundment surface and the presence of secondary arsenic sulfides in the organic-C beneath the tailings. The persistence of elevated As concentrations beneath the tailings indicates precipitation of secondary As sulfides is not sufficient to completely remove dissolved As. The oxidation of sulfides and release of As is expected to continue for decades. The findings will inform future remediation efforts and provide a foundation for the long-term monitoring of the effectiveness of the remediation program.

Experimental and numerical evaluation of single-layer covers placed on acid-generating tailings

Abstract:This study focuses on the reclamation work being performed on two former acid-generating tailings sites, located in Quebec, Canada. At both sites, the tailings were partially oxidized due to extended exposure, and the pore water is acidic. The reclamation solution applied to control acid mine drainage is a monolayer cover, made of non acid-generating tailings in one case and a till in the other. The goal of this project was to assess the response of the tailings-cover systems under various conditions. Tailings samples were collected in situ and characterized in the laboratory. Large column tests were conducted to evaluate the hydrogeological and geochemical behaviour of the covered tailings following wetting and drying cycles. The instrumented columns were designed to reproduce some of the existing site conditions and provide representative results for longer term analyses. Volumetric water content, suction, and oxygen concentrations were also monitored over time. The experimental data were used to validate different numerical models including those constructed with Vadose/W (GeoSlope Int.). Additional simulations were conducted under field conditions to evaluate the effect of various influence factors such as the depth of the water table, climatic conditions and the thickness of the cover. The combination of experimental and numerical results show how the behaviour and efficiency of a monolayer cover placed over reactive tailings depend on these factors, highlighting the importance of hydrogeological properties and water table depth. In many instances, the cover materials were prone to desaturation, especially when the water table was deeper than about 2 m below the tailings-cover interface. These results tend to indicate that relatively thin monolayer covers would not be able to prevent oxygen ingress under some of the conditions observed in the field. Desaturation of the cover and/or reactive tailings is due to a combination of drainage and evaporation. In such cases, increasing the thickness of the monolayer cover only has a limited effect. A discussion follows on the practical implications of these laboratory experiments and the numerical simulations for field design of reclamation measures at these two tailings impoundments.

Abstract:Over the course of history, the development of human societies implied the exploitation of mineral resources which generated huge amounts of mining wastes leading to substantial environmental contamination by various metal(loid)s. This is especially the case of coal mine tailings which, subjected to weathering reactions, produce acid mine drainage (AMD), a recurring ecological issue related to current and past mining activities. In this study, we aimed to determine the origin, the fate and the ecotoxicity of metal(loid)s leached from a historical coal tailing heap to the Beuveroux river (Franche-Comté, France) using a combination of mineralogical, chemical and biological approaches. In the constitutive materials of the tailings, we identified galena, tetrahedrite and bournonite as metal-rich minerals and their weathering has led to massive contamination of the water and suspended particles of the river bordering the heap. The ecotoxicity of the AMD has been assessed using Chironomus riparius larvae encaged in the field during a one-month biomonitoring campaign. The larvae showed lethal and sub-lethal (growth and emergence inhibition and delay) impairments at the AMD tributary and near downstream stations. Metal bioaccumulation and subcellular fractionation in the larvae tissues revealed a strong bioavailability of, notably, As, Pb and Tl explaining the observed biological responses. Thus, more than 70 years after the end of mining operations, the coal tailings remain a chronic source of contamination and environmental risks in AMD effluent receiving waters.

Abstract:This study focuses on assessing the hydrogeochemical processes influencing the mobility of dissolved metal and metalloid species during mine effluent mixing. Field samples were collected to characterize effluents at an active gold mine located in the Abitibi Greenstone belt in western Québec, Canada. Controlled laboratory mixing experiments were further performed with real effluents. In situ physicochemical parameters, concentrations of major dissolved ions and trace elements were analyzed. Mineralogical analyses were also performed on precipitates from the laboratory mixtures. The data were used for statistical analyses and for modeling the geochemical evolution of effluents using PHREEQC with the wateq4f.dat database (with modifications). The results suggest that the formation of secondary minerals such as schwertmannite, Fe(OH) 3 , and jarosite could significantly affect the concentrations of trace elements in effluents. The precipitation of secondary minerals immobilized trace elements through coprecipitation and sorption processes. The main limitations of the modeling approach used here include the evaluation of the ion balance for low pH samples with high Fe and Al concentrations and the omission of biological processes. The approach provides insights into the geochemical evolution of mine effluents and could be adapted to several mining sites as a tool for improving water management. Environmental implication statement This manuscript focuses on assessing the impacts of mixing processes on the chemical composition of mine effluents before treatment. Such mixing processes are often required on mine sites to optimize water management. The effluents represent hazardous materials that can entail aquatic toxicity if not adequately treated before discharge to the environment. The mechanisms by which contaminants are mobilized and immobilized during mixing processes are only partly understood. This problem is addressed here by an innovative approach based on modeling and statistical analyses performed on field and laboratory data. The results provide new insights needed to optimize mine water management.

Abstract:Mine tailing deposits may result in environmental issues when abandoned and exposed to environmental conditions. This case study focuses on the "El Lavadero" tailing deposit, an abandoned mining environmental liability located in San Felipe de Jesús, Sonora, Mexico. To forecast its acid mine drainage (AMD) generation potential, the modified acid–base accounting (ABA) test was performed. The results in tailings fluctuated within the following ranges: Eh (257–583 mV), pH (1.7–6.4), E.C. (4425–51,065 μS cm −1 ), S total (2.75–13.23%), SO 4 2− (4.72–20.77%), and CaCO 3 (< DL–12.71%); and PTE (mg kg −1 ): Cd (12–407), Cr (16–29), Cu (149–685), Fe (95,760–186762), Mn (2432–23,759), Pb (11,258–27,146) and Zn (2212–69,417). These tailings had higher PTE levels than their surrounding agricultural soil, with the following behavior: Fe > Zn > Pb > Mn > Cu > Cd > Cr. PTE levels were significantly higher than those established by both international standards and Mexican environmental regulations. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic studies conducted in mine tailings and agricultural soil identified primary (i.e., pyrite) and secondary minerals (i.e., gypsum and jarosite). The mobility test showed low mobility rates for Cr and Pb; Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cd showed higher mobility rates. The modified ABA test indicated that "El Lavadero" deposit tailings were AMD potential generators; therefore, they were classified as hazardous (SEMARNAT, 2003 & 2009). Acidic leachates with high PTE levels can affect the water supply sources of San Felipe de Jesús and effluents discharged into the Sonora River, including the surrounding crops meant for human and animal consumption. Hence, rehabilitation of the "El Lavadero" tailing deposit is recommended to alleviate the environmental impact. Alternatives include the construction of a low-permeability barrier downstream.

Abstract:In the gold mining Witwatersrand Basin of South Africa, efflorescent mineral crusts are a common occurrence on and nearby tailings dumps during the dry season. The crusts are readily soluble and generate acidic, metal- and sulphate-rich solutions on dissolution. In this study, the metal content of efflorescent crusts at an abandoned gold mine tailings dump was used to characterise surface and groundwater discharges from the site. Geochemical modelling of the pH of the solution resulting from the dissolution of the crusts was used to better understand the crusts’ potential impact on water chemistry. The study involved two approaches: (i) conducting leaching experiments on oxidised and unoxidised tailings using artificial rainwater and dilute sulphuric acid and correlating the composition of crusts to these leachates and (ii) modelling the dissolution of the crusts in order to gain insight into their mineralogy and their potential impact on receiving waters. The findings suggested that there were two chemically distinct discharges from the site, namely an aluminium- and magnesium-rich surface water plume and an iron-rich groundwater plume. The first plume was observed to originate from the oxidised tailings following leaching with rainwater while the second plume originated from the underlying unoxidised tailings with leaching by sulphuric acid. Both groups of minerals forming from the respective plumes were found to significantly lower the pH of the receiving water with simulations of their dissolution found to be within 0.2 pH units of experimental values. It was observed that metals in a low abundance within the crust (for example, iron) had a stronger influence on the pH of the resulting solutions than metals in a greater abundance (aluminium or magnesium). Techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and in situ mineral determination techniques such as remote sensing can effectively determine the dominant mineralogy. However, the minerals or metals incorporated through solid solution into bulk mineralogy that dominates the chemistry of the solutions upon their dissolution may occur in minor quantities that can only be predicted using chemical analysis. Their mineralogy can be predicted using geochemical modelling and can provide a set of hypothetical minerals that upon dissolution yield a solution similar to that of the actual crusts. This realisation has a bearing on decision-making such as in risk assessment and designing pollutant mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Tailings are one of the largest pollutant sources in the world. The wind and water leaching were often considered the main distribution tool of their pollutants. However, the carbonate crust precipitation has negated the trace toxic element (TTE) release. To identify the release mode of Pb, Zn, and Cd from mine wastes, the hydrodynamic evolution of waste piles was considered. The macroscopic and microscopic observation, the grain sizes, cohesion particles, density, hydraulic conductivity, and Pb, Zn, and Cd concentrations performed from eight drill cores of the two waste dumps and the principal component and the hierarchical cluster analysis showed that the physical properties of waste piles closely controlled the TTE mobility and migration from the tailings. The obtained data also showed that the upper carbonate layers were first eroded by wind and rainfall. Then, the formation of an impermeable carbonate crust limited the Pb, Zn, and Cd releases. However, the hydrodynamic evolution of the underneath layers was different. As the high pile waste sediments' weight meaning the lithostatic pressure (Pl), the geostatic ratios (λ = Pf/Pl) were in DII and DIII dumps superior to 0.29 and 0.26, respectively. Therefore, the overpressured fluids increased the mineral dissolution, including the sulfides and carbonates of metals, and hydraulic fracturing that raised the percentages of the mobile TTE and migration indexes. By the secondary pore and fracture volumes, the polluted fluids were progressively channeled towards the underpressured marge (dumps edge) by repetitive (polyphase) fluid pulsations.
Performance of a Geosynthetic-Clay-Liner Cover System at a Cu/Zn Mine Tailings Impoundment

Abstract:The abandoned Kam Kotia Mine (Canada) is undergoing remediation. A geosynthetic-clay-liner (GCL) cover system was installed in the Northern Impounded Tailings (NIT) area in 2008 to isolate acid-generating tailings from water and oxygen and to mitigate sulfide oxidation. The cover system includes a vegetated uppermost soil layer underlain by a granular protective layer (sand), a clay moisture-retaining layer, a GCL, a granular capillary-break material (cushion sand), and a crushed waste rock-capillary break layer installed above the tailings. The goal of this study was to characterize the microbiology of the covered tailings to assess the performance of the cover system for mitigating sulfide bio-oxidation. Tailings beneath the GCL were characterized by high sulfur and low carbon content. The bulk pH of the tailings pore water was circumneutral (∼5.5 to 7.3). Total genomic DNA was extracted from 36 samples recovered from the constituent layers of the cover system and the underlying tailings and was analyzed in triplicates using high-throughput amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. Iron-oxidizing, sulfur-oxidizing, sulfate-reducing, and aerobic heterotrophic microorganisms were enumerated by use of most probable number enumeration, which identified heterotrophs as the most numerous group of culturable microorganisms throughout the depth profile. Low relative abundances and viable counts of microorganisms that catalyze transformations of iron and sulfur in the covered tailings, compared to previous studies on unreclaimed tailings, indicate that sulfide oxidation rates have decreased due to the presence of the GCL. Characterization of the microbial community can provide a sensitive indicator for assessing the performance of remediation systems.IMPORTANCE Mining activities are accompanied by significant environmental and financial liabilities, including the release of acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is caused by accelerated chemical and biological oxidation of sulfide minerals in mine wastes and is characterized by low pH and high concentrations of sulfate and metal(loid)s. Microorganisms assume important roles in the catalysis of redox reactions. Our research elucidates linkages among the biogeochemistry of mine wastes and remediation systems and microbial community and activity. This study assesses the performance and utility of geosynthetic-clay-liner cover systems for management of acid-generating mine wastes. Analyses of the microbial communities in tailings isolated beneath an engineered cover system provide a better understanding of the complex biogeochemical processes involved in the redox cycling of key elements, contribute to the remediation of mine wastes, and provide a valuable tool for assessment of the effectiveness of the remediation system.

Abstract:Combining environmental isotope analysis with principal component analysis can be an effective method to discriminate the inflows and sources of contamination in mining-affected watersheds. This paper presents a field-scale study conducted at an acid mine drainage (AMD)-contaminated site adjacent to a pyrite mine in South China. Samples of surface water and groundwater were collected to investigate transport in the vadose zone using stable isotopes of oxygen (δ18O) and hydrogen (δD) as environmental tracers. Principal component analysis of hydrogeochemical data was used to identify the probable sources of heavy metals in the AMD. The heavy metal pollution index (HPI) was applied to evaluate the pollution status of heavy metals in the groundwater. The groundwater associated with the Datai reservoir was recharged by atmospheric precipitation and surface water. On the side near the AMD pond, the groundwater was significantly affected by the soluble metals produced by pyrite oxidation. The concentrations of some metals (Al, Mn, and Pb) in all of the samples exceed the desirable limits prescribed by the World Health Organization (Guidelines for drinking-water quality, 4th edn. World Health Organization, Geneva, 2011). Among them, the concentration of Al is more than 30,000 times higher than the desirable limits prescribed by the World Health Organization (2011), and the concentration of Mn is more than 3000 times higher. The HPI values based on these heavy metal concentrations were found to be 10–1000 times higher than the critical pollution index value of 100. These findings provide a reference and guidance for research on the migration and evolution of heavy metals in vadose zone water in AMD-contaminated areas.

Abstract:Spodumene, a lithian mineral found in granitic pegmatites, is a major source of lithium. In situ, multi-year and large-scale (>10s of tons) predictive hydrogeochemical studies can be of great value for informing mine waste rock and tailings management, not least because the material is exposed to the actual climate where it is meant to be stored. However, such studies are rare given their cost and size, and previous ones have focused mainly on sulfide-bearing materials. An experimental field cell filled with spodumene beneficiation tailings was built at the Whabouchi lithium mine site in northern Québec (Canada) and monitored during four consecutive years. In parallel, column laboratory kinetic testing on the same material was conducted for water quality parameters to compare the effect of testing scales on the geochemical behavior. Geochemical results and release rates were overall similar between laboratory and field, and consistent with previously published laboratory results for materials from the same site. The leachates were neutral to slightly alkaline, with ions from feldspars (Ca > Na > K) and residual spodumene (Li) being notable solutes. Concentrations for most solutes surveyed remained higher in the field after four years than in columns at the end of the experiment. One major difference between laboratory and field was a brief (less than 2 years) increase in iron concentrations from the field cell, resulting in Fe-oxyhydroxides precipitation, that was not observed in laboratory. The source of this iron is arguably residual ferrosilicon (used for dense medium separation) and this difference is attributed to the different testing conditions and configurations in the laboratory versus in situ. Field hydrogeological results highlight strong seasonal patterns and the rapid response of this sand-like, sulfide-poor material to ambient temperature changes and wetting-drying events. The tailings both wet and drain rapidly and easily given their water retention curve and the range of matrix suctions recorded during frost-free months. Net infiltration through the tailings was estimated to represent 55% of total precipitation in summer (June–October) 2021. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the environmental behavior of hard rock lithium mine tailings under real, sub-arctic climatic conditions and outlines similarities and differences between laboratory- and field-generated geochemical results.

Abstract:The increase in gold mining activities has led to a substantial rise in tailings generation, which carry distinct physicochemical and microbiological properties. This study aimed to evaluate the hazardous characteristics of mining tailings using the CRETIB (corrosivity, reactivity, explosiveness, toxicity, ignitability, biological-infectious) methodology. The research analyzed concentrations of heavy metals including arsenic, cadmium, copper, chromium, lead, mercury, nickel, and zinc, alongside parameters such as pH, cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, and coliform bacteria. Tailings samples were collected from a mine in Ponce Enriquez, Ecuador, at the surface and at a depth of 2 m across three monitoring campaigns. The results indicate that the tailings do not exhibit hazardous characteristics according to CRETIB criteria. While arsenic, chromium, copper, nickel, zinc, and mercury concentrations showed significant differences between the surface and 2 m depth, accumulating at the bottom of the tailings dam by 30–72%, parameters such as pH, cyanide, and hydrogen sulfide were higher at the surface, likely due to volatilization and precipitation effects. Lead did not show significant differences, but also tended to accumulate at depth. These findings suggest that the tailings could be safely utilized in the production of construction materials such as bricks, geopolymer concrete, and fiber cement, promoting circular economy practices and sustainable development in mining.

Abstract:Acid mine drainage (AMD) has global significance due to its low pH and elevated heavy metal content, which have received widespread attention. After AMD irrigation in mining areas, heavy metals are distributed among soil layers, but the influencing factors and mechanisms remain unclear. AMD contamination of surrounding soil is primarily attributed to surface runoff and irrigation and causes significant environmental degradation. A laboratory soil column experiment was conducted to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of the heavy metals Cd and Cu, as well as the impact of key environmental factors on the migration and transformation of these heavy metals following long-term soil pollution by AMD. After AMD addition, the soil exhibited a significant increase in acidity, accompanied by notable alterations in various environmental parameters, including soil pH, Eh, Fe(II) content, and iron oxide content. Over time, Cd and Cu in the soil mainly existed in the exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions. In spatial terms, exchangeable Cu increased with increasing depth. Pearson correlation analysis indicated significant negative correlations between pH and Cu, Cd, and Eh in pore water, as well as negative correlations between pH and the exchangeable fraction of Cd (F1), carbonate-bound fraction of Cd (F2), and exchangeable fraction of Cu (F1) in the solid phase. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between pH and the residual fraction of Cu (F5). Furthermore, the soil total Cd content exhibited a positive correlation with pyrophosphate-Fe (Fe p ) and dithionite-Fe (Fe d ), while CdF1, CdF2, total Cu, and CuF1 displayed positive correlations with Fe p . Our findings indicate that the presence of AMD in soil leads to alterations in the chemical fractions of Cd and Cu, resulting in enhanced bioavailability. These results offer valuable insights for developing effective remediation strategies for soils near mining sites.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The oxidation of sulfide-bearing mine tailings catalyzed by acidophilic iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria releases toxic metals and other contaminants into soil and groundwater as acid mine drainage. Understanding the environmental variables that control the community structure and metabolic activity of microbes indigenous to tailings (especially the abiotic stressors of low pH and high dissolved metal content) is crucial to developing sustainable bioremediation strategies. We determined the microbial community composition along two continuous vertical gradients of Cu/Ni mine tailings at each of two tailings impoundments near Sudbury, Ontario. 16S rRNA amplicon data showed high variability in community diversity and composition between locations, as well as at different depths within each location. A temporal comparison for one tailings location showed low fluctuation in microbial communities across 2 years. Differences in community composition correlated most strongly with pore-water pH, Eh, alkalinity, salinity, and the concentration of several dissolved metals (including iron, but not copper or nickel). The relative abundances of individual genera differed in their degrees of correlation with geochemical factors. Several abundant lineages present at these locations have not previously been associated with mine tailings environments, including novel species predicted to be involved in iron and sulfur cycling. IMPORTANCE Mine tailings represent a significant threat to North American freshwater, with legacy tailings areas generating acid mine drainage (AMD) that contaminates rivers, lakes, and aquifers. Microbial activity accelerates AMD formation through oxidative metabolic processes but may also ameliorate acidic tailings by promoting secondary mineral precipitation and immobilizing dissolved metals. Tailings exhibit high geochemical variation within and between mine sites and may harbor many novel extremophiles adapted to high concentrations of toxic metals. Characterizing the unique microbiomes associated with tailing environments is key to identifying consortia that may be used as the foundation for innovative mine-waste bioremediation strategies. We provide an in-depth analysis of microbial diversity at four copper/nickel mine tailings impoundments, describe how communities (and individual lineages) differ based on geochemical gradients, predict organisms involved in AMD transformations, and identify taxonomically novel groups present that have not previously been observed in mine tailings.

Abstract:25 families with serologically documented isoimmune neonatal thrombopenia were investigated for ABO-antigens of mother and child. In all cases mother and child were ABO-compatible. It is concluded that feto-maternal ABO-compatibility is a prerequisite for the development of isoimmune neonatal thrombopenia; hence, platelets must have ABO-antigens or be covered by soluble ABO-antigens.

Abstract:Acid mine drainage (AMD) resulting from pyrite mining causes hydrogeochemical evolution of groundwater and, in particular, the consequent release of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), posing health risks to populations dependent on groundwater. In this study, hydrogeochemical characteristics and evolutionary mechanisms were systematically illustrated via multivariate statistical methods and hydrogeochemical methods based on groundwater samples (n=40) collected in a pyrite mining area in southern China. The diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique was applied to evaluate the accuracy of metal content detection in groundwater at low concentrations. Based on principal component analysis (PCA), the groundwater dataset was classified into four types: brackish water dominated by sulfate, brackish water dominated by Ca-HCO 3 , low-mineralized water with the presence of PTEs, and freshwater in its natural state. The main controlling factors of hydrogeochemistry are evaporative crystallization and water–rock interactions. Fe, Mn, Pb, and Cd were detected in groundwater in the study area at levels exceeding World Health Organization (WHO) parameter values, and the highly toxic trace metal Tl was detected at levels up to 20 μg/L. The assessment of the applicability of the DGT technique to groundwater systems showed that reliable DGT detection results could be obtained under neutral or alkaline conditions at low Mn and Cd levels. This study highlights the evolution of the groundwater hydrogeochemistry under the combined influences of human activities such as mining and remediation management. In particular, the release of PTEs can affect human health, while the adoption of in situ DGT technology can provide strong support for studying these issues.

Abstract:Mining activities disrupt the natural oxidative balance underground, increasing the oxidation of metal sulfides like pyrite. This process leads to the formation of highly acidic mine drainage (AMD) with elevated concentrations of iron (Fe) and sulfate (SO42-). However, generic plugging and backfilling methods, when applied without considering the specific post-mining oxidative environments of different metal mines, often yields minimal results. To clarify the distribution of the underground redox environment after mining of a metal mine in Dexing, China, fifteen water samples from flood and dry periods, as well as fifteen borehole samples, were collected for hydrogeological and chemical analysis. For the first time, the study proposed that the redox zone could be identified and delineated through vertical analysis of water storage media, mineral composition, and hydrochemical characteristics. A hydrogeochemical cause model was constructed, revealing that AMD formation primarily occurs in oxidative and transition zones. Based on the redox zone characteristics of the study area, actual engineering sealing was performed on the oxidation and transition zones of cavity No. 23. As a result, the pH increased from 2.5 before remediation to 4.5, indicating a reduction in acidity. The concentrations of SO42- and Fe significantly decreased, reducing from 1360.0 mg/L and 147.0 mg/L before treatment to 726.0 mg/L and 23.6 mg/L after treatment; the total decrease amounting to 46.6 % and 84.0 %, respectively. The concentrations of Mn and Cu similarly, decreased by 10.7 % and 15.6 %, respectively. This study provides a novel approach and valuable reference for the refined identification and classification of redox zones after metal mine exploitation, as well as for the targeted plugging and treatment of cavities that produce AMD.
The Impact of Ecological Restoration on Biogeochemical Cycling and Mercury Mobilization in Anoxic Conditions on Former Mining Sites in French Guiana

Abstract:Successive years of gold mining in French Guiana has resulted in soil degradation and deforestation leading to the pollution and erosion of mining plots. Due to erosion and topography, gold panning sites are submitted to hydromorphy during rainfall and groundwater increases. This original study focused on characterizing the impact of hydromorphic anaerobic periods on bio-geochemical cycles. We sampled soil from five rehabilitated sites in French Guiana, including sites with herbaceous vegetation and sites restored with fabaceous plants, Clitoria racemosa (Cli) mon-oculture, Acacia mangium (Aca) monoculture, Clitoria racemosa and Acacia mangium (Mix) bi-culture. We conducted mesocosm experiments where soil samples were incubated in anaerobic conditions for 35 days. To evaluate the effect of anaerobic conditions on biogeochemical cycles, we measured the following parameters related to iron-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing bacteria metabolism throughout the experiment: CO2 release, carbon dissolution, sulphide production and sulphate mobilization. We also monitored the solubilization of iron oxyhydroxides, manganese oxides, aluminum oxides and mercury in the culture medium. Iron-reducing bacteria (IRB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are described as the major players in the dynamics of iron, sulfur and metal elements including mercury in tropical environments. The results revealed two trends in these rehabilitated sites. In the Aca and Mix sites, bacterial iron-reducing activity coupled with manganese solubilization was detected with no mercury solubilization. In herbaceous sites, a low anaerobic activity coupled with sulphide production and mercury solubilization were detected. These results are the first that report the presence and activity of iron- and sulfate-reductive communities at rehabilitated mining sites and their interactions with the dynamics of metallic elements and mercury. These results report, however, the positive impact of ecological restoration of mining sites in French Guiana by reducing IRB and SRB activities, the potential mobility of mercury and its risk of transfer and methylation.
