Abstract:The hallmark of amnesia is poor explicit long‐term memory along with normal short‐term memory. It is often stated that information encountered by amnesic patients is forgotten within 1 minute of presentation. However, previous work has not distinguished between forgetting as a function of time versus the interfering material occupying that time. We show that there is a marked benefit of reduced interference in amnesic patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a condition that is characterised by anterograde amnesia in the absence of other neuropsychological deficits and carries an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease. The result suggests that long‐term memory is encoded in these patients to a greater extent than had been realised but that their memory is highly vulnerable to interference.
The Danish landscape of providing support for caregivers of people with potentially life-threatening disease: A cross-sectional study among representatives of health services in Danish municipalities and hospitals

Abstract:Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, Ahead of Print. Aims:(a) To investigate support for caregivers of people diagnosed with stroke, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), dementia, or heart disease provided across healthcare settings in Denmark; (b) to assess differences in caregiver support across diagnoses and settings.Methods:A cross-sectional nationwide survey among professionals representing healthcare settings at municipalities (n = 479) and hospital wards and outpatient clinics (n = 425). The survey assessed identification of caregivers and support initiatives.Results:The response rate was 81% for municipalities and 49% for hospitals. Identification of caregivers was frequent in dementia care (81% and 100%) and less frequent in COPD care (58% and 64%) in municipalities and hospitals, respectively. Caregiver support differed significantly across diagnoses within municipalities (p = 0.009) and hospitals (p < 0.001). Systematic identification of vulnerable caregivers was <25% for all diagnoses except dementia. The most common support initiatives involving caregivers were primarily aimed at the ill person and included guidance about the disease and consequences for everyday life and lifestyle changes. Caregivers were least involved in support initiatives addressing physical training, work retention, sexuality, or cohabitation.Conclusions:Disparities and significant differences across diagnoses exist in the identification of caregivers and the provision of support initiatives. Support initiatives involving caregivers primarily targeted patients. Future studies should investigate how caregivers' needs can be met across different diagnoses and healthcare settings and investigate potential changes in caregivers' needs during disease trajectories. In clinical practice, identification of vulnerable caregivers should be a major focus, and disease-specific clinical guidelines may be required to ensure sufficient support for caregivers.

Abstract:This paper describes the use of a system identification technique to estimate the parameters of a low-order, dynamic model for a power system. The basic technique is to obtain an ARIMAX model by applying a prediction error method to data consisting of 1-s samples of the system frequency and the power output of the Dinorwig fast-response pumped-storage station. From this model the natural frequency, damping factor and stiffness (or "beta") of the power system are obtained. The paper first establishes an appropriate order for the ARIMAX model. Simulation is used to validate the model and ensure that the results are not an artefact of either the input, the identification method or the model structure. It is shown that the precision of the parameter estimates is limited by unknown load disturbances. An example of the use of the technique to analyze the daily variation of parameters is given.

Abstract:Background Informal caregivers are an essential part of health and social care systems worldwide. As such, they may need professional support. Aim The aim of this study was to describe informal caregivers' experiences and need for support from a tailored primary health care (PHC) unit. Methods This is a qualitative descriptive study using data collected from five semi‐structured focus group discussions with a purposeful sample of 16 informal caregivers of older relatives. Respondents were recruited from a tailored PHC unit for people aged 75 years or older in a region in central Sweden. The data were analysed by qualitative content analysis with an abductive approach, based on the principles of the patient‐ and family‐centred care framework. Results The overarching theme was 'Striving for partnership'. The findings indicate that informal caregivers to some extent felt supported by the healthcare professionals. However, the caregivers expressed a need to be further acknowledged by the professionals in order to participate in the care of their older relatives in the way they wanted. Moreover, insufficient information regarding the older adult's health condition and care provided by the professionals had a negative impact on the caregiver's participation in care. Conclusions Informal caregivers have unmet needs for support and strive for a partnership with the PHC professionals. PHC professionals should be more attentive and invite informal caregivers to participate in the care of the older adult in order to meet their support needs and build an equal partnership. The patient‐ and family‐centred care framework may be of guidance when providing care for older adults in a PHC context.

Abstract:Objectives Advancements in medicine and science have enabled more and more people to live longer with a chronic medical condition, namely cancer. Nevertheless, the palliative care (PC) approach continues to be introduced and incorporated later in the lives of patients and families dealing with such conditions. Thus, the need for individuals to care for this population in our society is increasing, giving rise to the so-called "informal caregivers." The present study intends to examine the main obstacles faced by informal caregivers taking care of a cancer patient receiving PC based on what health professionals working in these settings perceive and write down. To achieve this goal, the written files of 2 Portuguese palliative care institutions were analyzed. Methods An inductive thematic analysis was conducted, focusing on the contact between health professionals and family caregivers and based on the notes taken by health professionals. Results Three main overarching themes were identified: (1) burden, (2) intra-family impact of the illness, and (3) network vulnerabilities. Included in this are the emphasis on the role of the family and social support, the high levels of psychological morbidity and caregiver burden present over this period, and a great need for information about the illness. Significance of results This study provided a broader awareness regarding the daily struggle experienced by family caregivers, particularly those who juggle between "roles." It is vital to understand the scope of the obstacles experienced by caregivers during the terminal phase of their loved one's illness, given how important it is to address the family's needs. Future studies and practitioners should consider these observations and topics when considering new approaches for this population, as they ought to be quite focused and short in time in order to meet people's needs.

Abstract:Purpose: Despite the increasing research on cancer patient caregivers, there is still a lack of detailed understanding about the experiences of spouses caring for elderly colorectal cancer patients. This study aimed to fill this gap by examining the caregiving experiences of spouses during palliative chemotherapy for elderly Chinese colorectal cancer patients. Methods: Using a qualitative descriptive design, we recruited spousal caregivers of elderly colorectal cancer patients undergoing palliative chemotherapy. Semistructured interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis was employed to analyse the data. Results: Sixteen caregivers aged 60 to 82 years participated in the interviews. The analysis revealed three main themes: ambivalence, multiple role adaptation to conflicts, and the coexistence of hope and pressure. These themes shed light on the behaviors of older caregivers and the challenges they face, including physical and psychosocial issues associated with aging. Conclusion: This study highlights the significant stress and challenges experienced by older caregivers, characterized by intertwined emotions such as anxiety about their spouses' health deterioration, exhaustion from long-term care responsibilities, and anticipation of treatment outcomes.

Abstract:Abstract Background An increasing number of older people in Germany receive care at home from family members, particularly from spouses. Family care has been associated not only with subjective burden but also with negative effects on caregivers’ health. A heterogeneous group, caregivers are confronted with individual situational demands and use different available coping strategies. To date, little is known about the relationship between burden and coping by spousal caregivers, particularly in the context of geriatric patients without dementia. Objectives The aim of this study is to explore the burden and coping strategies of caregiving spouses of geriatric patients without dementia and with a hospitalization within the last year. To help explore this population, a typology is presented that has been based on reported perceptions of home care burden and individual coping strategies. Furthermore, a case study is presented for each type of spousal caregiver. Methods The study used a concurrent mixed method design with a sample of nine spousal caregivers (mean age: 78.9 years). Four women and five men were recruited in an acute hospital setting during the TIGER study. Quantitative data were collected using a self-questionnaire and qualitative data were gathered through nine problem-centered interviews with spousal caregivers. The latter were subsequently analyzed utilizing the structured content analysis method. The data were then summarized to nine individual cases. Finally, the results were clustered using the empirically grounded construction of types and typologies. Each type of spousal caregiver is presented by a case study. Results Three types of caregiving spouses were identified: “The Caring Partner”, “The Worried Manager” and “The Desperate Overburdened”. These types differ primarily in the level of subjective burden and caregiving stress, the coping strategies, the motivation for caregiving, and expressed emotions. Conclusions The development of this new typology of caregiving spouses could help health care professionals better understand caregiving arrangements and thus provide more targeted advice. Untangling the role of social relationships in the association between caregiver burden and caregiver health: an observational study exploring three coping models of the stress process paradigm

Abstract:Abstract Background Caregivers health is often at risk due to the detrimental effects of caregiver burden. It is therefore vital to identify strategies and resources, which ensure the safeguarding of caregivers' health, whilst also enabling caregivers to continue providing high quality long-term care to care-receivers. The objective of this study is therefore to examine the moderating and mediating role of different social relationship constructs (social networks, social support, relationship quality, and loneliness) in the relationship between subjective caregiver burden and health, by exploring different coping models of the stress process paradigm, namely the stress buffering , social deterioration and counteractive models. Methods Longitudinal survey data from 133 couples of caregiving romantic partners and persons with spinal cord injury, living in Switzerland were used. We employed multivariable regression analysis with the inclusion of interaction terms to explore moderation effects of social relationships (i.e. stress buffering model), and path analysis to explore mediation effects (i.e. social deterioration vs. counteractive model) of social relationships on the association between subjective caregiver burden and health. Health was operationalised using the following outcomes: mental health, vitality, bodily pain and general health. Results Social support and relationship quality were found to buffer the negative effects of subjective caregiver burden on mental health. Mediating effects of social relationships were observed for mental health (indirect effect -0.25, -0.42- -0.08) and vitality (indirect effect -0.20, -0.37- -0.03), providing support for the deterioration model . Loneliness was found to be a particularly important construct on the pathway from caregiver burden to health. Conclusion Our study highlights the potential of social support and relationship quality to override the negative consequences of caregiver burden on mental health and vitality. Our evidence thus supports the advance of interventions that seek to improve qualitative aspects of social relationships, especially in caregivers experiencing a high subjective caregiver burden.

"Never at ease" - family carers within integrated palliative care: a multinational, mixed method study

Abstract:Background: Family carers manage a wide range of responsibilities in the lives and care of patients receiving palliative care. They fulfil multiple roles and perform activities within different settings. This has immediate consequences on family carers' every-day lives. According to literature, family carers in palliative care are both part of the formal and informal care network, but also persons in need of support. This article aims to investigate 1) burdens and rewards associated with family caregiving and 2) what family carers find helpful in their contact with professionals from integrated palliative care initiatives (IPC-i) and other services. Methods: Family carers looking after patients with cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or chronic heart failure were purposefully recruited at 22 IPC-i in Belgium, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom in the course of the project "Patient-centred palliative care pathways in advanced cancer and chronic disease" (InSup-C). Semi-structured interviews (n = 156) and 87 quantitative questionnaires (CRA, POS, CANHELP Lite) were conducted with family carers. Interviews were analysed with transnationally agreed thematic codes (MAXQDA or NVivo). Statistical tests (SPSS) were carried out in accordance with the characteristic value of the items and distributions. Results: On average, quantitative data showed moderate burden, but the qualitative findings indicated that this burden might be underrated. There is some evidence that IPC-i with well-developed professional care networks and communication systems relieved family carers' burden by direct and indirect interventions; e.g. provision of night shift nurses or psychological support. Needs of family carers were similar in all participating countries. However, in all countries IPC-i mostly offered one-off events for family carers, lacking systematic or institutionalised support structures. Conclusions: Data suggest that, most IPC-i did not pay enough attention to the needs of most family carers, and did not offer proactive care and access to supportive resources to them (e.g. training, respite care, access to resources). We recommend recognizing family carers as part of the 'unit of care' and partner in caregiving, to improve their knowledge about, and access to, and the support available.

Abstract:Extract Long-term breathlessness is a debilitating symptom that affects people's quality of life [1]. When it limits everyday activities [2], social isolation and greater physical dependence on others can also occur [3]. Caregivers ( i.e. family/friends who provide care/support to people with long-term breathlessness) experience significant burden due to their caregiving role. Living in a constant state of alertness and unpredictability, with increased responsibilities in the relationship and at home, can affect their mental and physical health and increase social isolation [3, 4]. Clinicians' lack of acknowledgment or support may also add to their burden and minimise any positive aspects of caregiving [4]. A better understanding of factors associated with caregiver burden is critical for developing targeted, person-centred support for caregivers of people with long-term breathlessness. This study aimed to explore which caregiver or patient factors may be associated with burden for caregivers of people with long-term breathlessness and COPD.

What factors are associated with informal carers' psychological morbidity during end-of-life home care? A systematic review and thematic synthesis of observational quantitative studies

Abstract:Background: Family carers are central in supporting patients nearing end of life. As a consequence, they often suffer detrimental impacts on their own mental health. Understanding what factors may affect carers' mental health is important in developing strategies to maintain their psychological well-being during caregiving. Aim: To conduct a systematic review and thematic evidence synthesis of factors related to carers' mental health during end-of-life caregiving. Method: Searches of MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Social Sciences Citation Index, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects 1 January 2009-24 November 2019. We included observational quantitative studies focusing on adult informal/family carers for adult patients at end of life cared for at home considering any factor related to carer mental health (anxiety, depression, distress and quality of life) pre-bereavement. Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale was used. Thematic analysis with box score presentation, and meta-analysis were done where data permitted. Results: Findings from 63 included studies underpinned seven emergent themes. Patient condition (31 studies): worse patient psychological symptoms and quality of life were generally associated with worse carer mental health. Patient depression was associated with higher depression in carers (standardised mean difference = 0.59, 95% confidence interval 0.32 to 0.87, I2 = 77%). Patients' other symptoms and functional impairment may relate to carer mental health, but findings were unclear. Impact of caring responsibilities (14 studies): impact on carers' lives, task difficulty and general burden had clear associations with worse carer mental health. Relationships (8 studies): family dynamics and the quality of the carer-patient relationship may be important for carer mental health and are worthy of further investigation. Finance (6 studies): insufficient resources may relate to carers' mental health and warrant further study. Carers' psychological processes (13 studies): self-efficacy and preparedness were related to better mental health. However, findings regarding coping strategies were mixed. Support (18 studies): informal support given by family and friends may relate to better carer mental health, but evidence on formal support is limited. Having unmet needs was related to worse mental health, while satisfaction with care was related to better mental health. Contextual factors (16 studies): older age was generally associated with better carer mental health and being female was associated with worse mental health. Limitations: Studies were mainly cross-sectional (56) rather than longitudinal (7) which raises questions about the likely causal direction of relationships. One-third of studies had samples < 100, so many had limited statistical power to identify existing relationships. Conclusions and future work: Future work must adopt a comprehensive approach to improving carers' mental health because factors relating to carer mental health cover a broad spectrum. The literature on this topic is diverse and difficult to summarise, and the field would benefit from a clearer direction of enquiry guided by explanatory models. Future research should (1) further investigate quality of relationships and finances; (2) better define factors under investigation; (3) establish, through quantitative causal analyses, why factors might relate to mental health; and (4) utilise longitudinal designs more to aid understanding of likely causal direction of associations. Young Spouses' Experiences of Having a Partner With Heart Disease and Adolescents Living at Home

Abstract:Aim: To describe the life situation of spouses having a partner with heart disease and adolescents living at home. Design: Qualitative inductive design. Method: Participants (n = 22) were included from three Scandinavian countries. Semi-structured interviews were analysed using thematic analysis with an inductive and latent approach. Results: Three themes were derived. 'Being in spousal and parental role transition' described how daily life had been affected and parental responsibilities had been doubled due to their partner's heart disease. 'Living with unpredictability and insecurity' included how the unpredictable illness trajectory caused worries and affected the well-being of the family. 'Managing a challenging life situation' highlights how spouses coped with their partners' heart disease and adapted to a new life situation. Conclusion: Young spouses' life situation was greatly affected by their partner's heart disease, resulting in increased responsibilities and double parenthood. Having a positive attitude and mindset towards life was used as a strategy to cope with the changed life situation and find a new way of life. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: All family members are affected by heart disease. Spouses needed additional professional support and guidance on how to involve the children when a parent is ill. Impacts: This study highlights how young spouses, with adolescents living at home, experience their life situation. The life situation is unpredictable due to the partner's heart disease, as they must handle both caring for their partner and taking on double parenthood. Research involving family members can improve person- and family-centred care and treatment outcomes in health care and society. Reporting method: COREQ checklist was used preparing the manuscript. Abstract:AimTo identify, analyze and synthesize qualitative studies on caregivers' experiences of contributions to the self-care of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). BackgroundCOPD patients perform daily self-care behaviours to manage the disease. With aging and disease progression, patients need to rely on the contributions of informal caregivers, usually family members, for disease management. Caregivers' normal or habitual contributions to patients' self-care have not yet been completely investigated. DesignThematic synthesis of qualitative studies. Data sourcesCINAHL, EMBASE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, Emcare and OpenGrey databases were searched from inception to September 2020. The search was restricted to English-language papers. Review methodsStudies were critically appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist. The initial line-by-line codes were aggregated into descriptive themes from which analytical themes were derived. ResultsFifteen papers from nine countries, published 2009–2020, were included. Six analytical themes encompassing 22 descriptive themes were identified and grouped in two overarching themes describing caregivers' experiences of contributions to patients' self-care during the stable and exacerbation phases of COPD. In the stable phases, caregivers contribute through maintaining disease stability, promoting healthy behaviours, fostering normal life and helping perform daily activities. During exacerbations, caregivers contribute through assessing, monitoring and managing symptoms in collaboration with patients or autonomously. They contribute by performing actions, motivating patients, organizing care, sensing variations in symptoms, acquiring knowledge and educating patients, making decisions, communicating and collaborating with healthcare providers and patients and advocating for patients. ConclusionThis thematic synthesis enlarges knowledge of caregivers' contributions to patients' self-care in COPD, detailing the ways by which caregivers provide care to patients. ImpactContributing daily to the self-care of a family member with COPD is a complex experience. Nurses need to acknowledge the importance of caregivers' contributions to patient disease management and develop effective educational interventions to support them.

Abstract:BackgroundSeriously ill patients often depend on their informal caregivers to help and support them through the disease course. This study investigated informal cancer caregivers’ experiences of caregiving tasks and consequences and how caregiver status (primary vs. non-primary caregiver) and the caregiver’s relationship to the patient (spouse/partner, etc.) are related to these experiences.MethodsIn a cross-sectional questionnaire study, randomly selected cancer patients with a range of diagnoses and disease stages were invited to pass on the ‘Cancer Caregiving Tasks, Consequences and Needs Questionnaire’ (CaTCoN) to 1–3 of their caregivers.ResultsA total of 590 caregivers related to 415 (55% of 752 eligible) cancer patients participated. Large proportions of caregivers experienced substantial caregiving workload, e.g., provision of psychological support (74%), as well as a range of negative consequences, most commonly stress (59%). Some caregivers experienced personal growth, but relatively large proportions did not. Caregiver status and the caregiver’s relationship to the patient were associated with some caregiving aspects. Primary caregivers experienced the highest caregiving workload, and non-primary caregivers experienced most problems with getting time off from work. Spouses/partners and/or parents experienced the highest workload, most lack of time for social relations, most financial difficulties, and had the greatest need for seeing a psychologist. They furthermore experienced the highest degree of personal growth and had the smallest need for living a normal life while being a caregiver. Yet, regarding the majority of caregiving aspects, no associations with caregiver status or the caregiver’s relationship to the patient were found.ConclusionsOverall, the findings confirm that cancer caregiving is burdensome. The primary and the closest caregivers seemed to take on most caregiving tasks, but, contrary to expectations, regarding the majority of caregiving consequences non-primary and more distant caregivers were affected to the same degree as the primary and closest caregivers. Initiatives and interventions to support not only the primary caregivers are therefore warranted.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the self-management strategies of Danish patients living with advanced Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), with a particular focus on their daily life and their interactions with the respiratory outpatient clinic. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 11 patients with COPD affiliated with a Danish respiratory outpatient clinic. The data were thematically analyzed as suggested by Braun & Clarke. The analysis revealed one overarching theme, three main themes, and six subthemes. The overarching theme 'In a strained healthcare system patients with COPD struggle to access needed support to be able to self-manage their disease' revolved around the challenges that patients face in an overburdened healthcare system as they seek support to effectively self-manage their condition. The three main themes were: (1) Only physical symptoms provide legal access to the respiratory outpatient clinic, (2) For patients, the measurements serve as indicators of their health status and overall well-being, (3) Healthcare professionals' skills and not the mode of contact matters to the patients. Healthcare professionals should be aware that the rhetoric surrounding a busy healthcare system with a stressed-out staff also affects patients. Patients with COPD may be particularly sensitive to this message and try to avoid burdening the healthcare system further by setting aside their own needs. However, this approach can lead to neglecting symptoms of deterioration and mental symptoms, which increase the risk of disease progression and subsequent risk of hospital admission.

Abstract:Background: People with severe mental illness (SMI) experience higher rates and poorer outcomes of physical long-term conditions (LTCs). The management of SMI and LTCs is highly complex and many people with SMI rely on informal carers for support, which may lead to high levels of caregiver burden, and caregiver burnout. Caregiver burnout can result in poor health outcomes for informal carers and a reduction in the quality of care they are able to provide. Therefore, it is important to understand the caring experience to identify and address factors that contribute to burden and burnout. Methods: This paper reports a secondary qualitative analysis of semistructured interviews and focus groups conducted with informal carers of people who have coexisting SMI and LTCs. We recruited 12 informal carers in England between December 2018 and April 2019. The transcripts were coded and analysed thematically. Results: We identified two overarching themes and five subthemes. The themes included 'Fighting on all fronts: Mounting strain between demands and resources', which described the challenge of providing care in the context of coexisting SMI and LTCs, and 'Safekeeping: The necessity of chronic hypervigilance', which captured how informal carers' roles were defined by managing high-risk situations, leading to hypervigilance and paternalistic approaches to care. Conclusion: The experience of informal carers for people with SMI and coexisting LTCs is marked by limited access to support and the management of significant risk, which could contribute to high caregiver burden. Further primary research is needed to understand how the experiences of the caregiver role for people with SMI and LTCs influence caregiver burden. Patient or public contribution: Our PPI panel DIAMONDS Voice provided guidance on this study from conception, design and development of interview guides and recruitment materials to final write-up. DIAMONDS Voice consists of service users and carers who have experience of SMI and LTCs. Three carer members reviewed the final manuscript, and two are credited as authors.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to analyse whether the parallel life situation between stroke patients and their informal caregivers (dyads) shown in cross-sectional studies prevails also in a longitudinal perspective.METHODS: A total of 377 Swedish stroke patients, aged ≥ 65 years, and their 268 informal caregivers were followed from hospital admission and one year on. Analyses were based on patient interviews, functional ability (MMSE) score, Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) score, Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) score, self-rated health score, and the Gothenburg Quality of Life (GQL) activity score. Similar information was obtained by postal questionnaires from informal caregivers, also including information on the nature and amount of assistance provided and on Caregiver Burden (CB) score.RESULTS: Before index admission informal caregivers provided care on average 5 h per week and after discharge 11 h per week (P < 0.0001). Support volume was associated with patient sex (more for men), low patient's functional ability, low received municipal social service support, closeness of patient-caregiver relation, and short distance to patient's home. Significant positive associations within the dyads were found for HAD anxiety score (P < 0.0001), total NHP score (P < 0.0001), and GQL activity score (P < 0.0001) after adjustment for patient's age, sex, functional ability, and patient-caregiver relationship. CB score increased with amount of informal caregiver support, patient's age, and with low functional ability and low amount of municipal social service support. All these associations were constant across time.CONCLUSIONS: There was an association within the dyads regarding anxiety score, NHP score, and activity score. CB score was generally high.

Abstract:Aims To explore caregivers' needs and problems in three European countries and associate the clusters of caregivers' needs with their sociodemographic characteristics. Design A qualitative focused mixed methods design was used. Methods In total, 52 caregivers of heart failure (HF) people were interviewed in three European countries between March 2017 and December 2018. Transcripts were analysed using the seven‐phase method of the exploratory multidimensional analysis according to Fraire with Reinert lexical classes findings were organized in dendrograms. Mayring's content analysis was also performed. Results Three clusters of caregivers were identified: spouses, adult children and non‐family members. Caregivers not only provide HF patients with vital unpaid support for their physical and emotional needs, but they are continually trying to cope with their social isolation and deteriorating health. Conclusions Informal caregiving emerged as a complex process influenced by various sociodemographic factors. Gender, relationship type and economic status are the important factors to be considered planning to develop approaches to address the needs of caregivers serving people with heart failure. Impact A comprehensive understanding of the nature of informal caregiving of individuals with heart failure, the complexity of the real‐world sociodemographic and cultural factors is warranted. The use of the EMDA method gave us the possibility of processing large masses of qualitative data through rapid, complex calculations. In detail, AATD allowed us to study in deep the significant fuzziness of what caregivers expressed and to analyse the content of the entire interviews and to produce global knowledge by using multi‐dimensional statistical methods to grasp the fundamental sense of the interviews, beyond the simple words. Three clusters were identified in the samples, including spouses, adult children and non‐family members. This study demonstrated that some sociodemographic characteristics could lead to everyday needs. Therefore, these demographic characteristics should be considered in developing targeted interventions. The research was conducted in Europe, but the technique shown can be replicated everywhere. The findings not only impact nursing but can be extended to all those stakeholders who concur with a public health educational mission. Patient or Public Contribution Carers were involved in this study after the discharge of their loved ones or at the time of the outpatient visit. They were involved after they had been observed in their dynamics of involvement in caring of the familiars or friends with heart failure.
