Abstract:In this contribution, we conceptually present a new avenue to construction of molecular functional materials with high performance of circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the condensed phase. A molecule (1) containing luminogenic silole and chiral sugar moieties was synthesized and thoroughly characterized. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence emission are observed, but upon molecular aggregation, both the CD and fluorescence are simultaneously turned on, showing aggregation-induced CD (AICD) and emission (AIE) effects. The AICD effect is supported by the fact that the molecules readily assemble into right-handed helical nanoribbons and superhelical ropes when aggregated. The AIE effect boosts the fluorescence quantum efficiency (phi(F)) by 136 fold (phi(F), similar to 0.6% in the solution versus similar to 81.3% in the solid state), which surmounts the serious limitations of aggregation-caused quenching effect encountered by conventional luminescent materials. Time-resolved fluorescence study and theoretical calculation from first principles conclude that restriction of the low-frequency intramolecular motions is responsible for the AIE effect. The helical assemblies of 1 prefer to emit right-handed circularly polarised light and display large CPL dissymmetry factors (g(em)), whose absolute values are in the range of 0.08-0.32 and are two orders of magnitude higher than those of commonly reported organic materials. We demonstrate for the first time the use of a Teflon-based microfluidic technique for fabrication of the fluorescent pattern. This shows the highest g(em) of -0.32 possibly due to the enhanced assembling order in the confined microchannel environment. The CPL performance was preserved after more than half year storage under ambient conditions, revealing the excellent spectral stability. Computational simulation was performed to interpret how the molecules in the aggregates interact with each other at the molecular level. Our designed molecule represents the desired molecular functional material for generating efficient CPL in the solid state, and the current study shows the best results among the reported organic conjugated molecular systems in terms of emission efficiency, dissymmetry factor, and spectral stability.

Abstract:We here report a molecule with chiral recognition capability by a mechanism of complexation-induced circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the solid thin film state. A molecule (1) containing the luminogenic unit silole and chiral phenylethanamine pendants is synthesized and characterized with standard spectroscopic methods. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) or fluorescence emission are observed. When aggregated into nanoparticles in a poor solvent, fluorescence is turned on but CD is still silent. When complexed with chiral acids to form a thin film, molecule 1 becomes CD-active and strongly fluorescent, showing simultaneous complexation-induced CD (CICD) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effects. The assemblies of 1 with different enantiomers of mandelic acid emit distinctly handed circularly polarised light and display CPL dissymmetry factors with absolute value around 0.01. This work provides a new platform for creating molecular functional materials with solid-state chiral sensing ability through reading CPL output signals.

Abstract:Abstract Developing facile and efficient methods to obtain circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with a large luminescence dissymmetry factor ( g lum ) and fluorescence quantum yield ( Φ Y ) is attractive but still challenging. Herein, supramolecular polymerization of styrylpyrenes ( R / S -PEB) is utilized to attain this aim, which can self-assemble into helical nanoribbons. Benefiting from the dominant CH-π interactions between the chromophores, the supramolecular solution of S -PEB shows remarkable blue-color CPL property ( g lum : 0.011, Φ Y : 69%). From supramolecular solution to gel, the emission color (blue to yellow-green) and handedness of CPL ( g lum : –0.011 to +0.005) are concurrently manipulated, while the corresponding supramolecular chirality maintains unchanged, representing the rare example of color-dependent CPL materials. Thanks to the supramolecular confine effect, the [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction rate of the supramolecular solution is 10.5 times higher than that of the monomeric solution. In contrast, no cycloaddition reaction occurs for the gel and assembled solid samples. Our findings provide a vision for fabricating multi-modal and high-performance CPL-active materials, paving the way for the development of advanced photo-responsive chiral systems.

Abstract:A new type of C-3-symmetric aza-polycyclic aromatic hydro-carbon (PAH) discs attached with chiral alkoxyl chains is developed and explored as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials with selective control and switching of chiroptical properties. Supramolecular polymerization of these PAHs is studied experimentally and theoretically. With the aid of weak hydrogen bonding and CH center dot center dot center dot pi interactions, these chromophores have strong tendency to form anisotropic chiral aggregates both in solutions and films. The well-controlled noncovalent interactions are critical for their excellent CPL performance. The resultant supramolecular polymers display a polarized emission band with the maximum g(lum) value up to 10(-2). Benefited from the chiral supramolecular polymerization process and N-doping structure feature of the core, on/off CPL switching from these molecules can be reversibly realized by external stimuli including the change of temperature, solvent, and pH conditions. Our work shows that chiral supramolecular polymers from concise yet highly rigid and planar PAH cores are superbly suitable for exceptional CPL emission both in dilute solutions and bulk materials, with a promising switchable CPL feature, thereby unlocking new design possibilities.

Abstract:Herein we report on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission originating from supramolecular chirality of organic microcrystals with a |glum| value up to 0.11. The microcrystals were prepared from highly emissive difluoroboron β-diketonate (BF2dbk) dyes R-1 or S-1 with chiral binaphthol (BINOL) skeletons. R-1 and S-1 exhibit undetectable CPL signals in solution but manifest intense CPL emission in their chiral microcrystals. The chiral superstructures induced by BINOL skeletons were confirmed by XRD analysis. Spectral analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that intermolecular electronic coupling, mediated by the asymmetric stacking in the chiral superstructures, effectively alters excited-state electronic structures and facilitates electron transitions perpendicular to BF2bdk planes. The coupling increases cosθμ,m from 0.05 (monomer) to 0.86 (tetramer) and triggers intense optical activity of BF2bdk. The results demonstrate that optical activity of chromophores within assemblies can be regulated by both orientation and extent of intermolecular electronic couplings.

Abstract:A series of chiral binaphthyl-based conjugated polymers enantiomers incorporating boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) chromophore in the main chain backbone were designed and synthesized by Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira cross coupling reaction. All of them can exhibit strong Cotton effects and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission signals in THE solution. The CD absorption dissymmetry factors (g(abs)) and the luminescence dissymmetry factors (g(lum)) can be regulated by tuning the dihedral angles of binaphthyl arising from different substitutions of BINOL hydroxyls. Interestingly, the chiral polymers can exhibit the gradual increase of both g(abs) and g(lum) as the decrease of dihedral angles of the chiral binaphthyl moiety. This work can provide a new strategy for the development of CPL emission materials.

Abstract:Surface states‐related CD/CPL behaviors of helically assembled carbonized polymer dots are observed and manipulated via interfacial dynamics. The excitation‐dependent CPL activities are closely related to a synergistic‐competition phenomenon between interfacial energy transfer and dipole–dipole interactions. These findings provide unique insights to the interfacial emission properties of host–guest nano‐luminophores. Stimulating and harnessing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is not only a sine qua non for fundamentally unveiling chirogenesis in physical chemistry, but also a pivotal prerequisite for implementation of such phenomenon in research fields including chiral optoelectronics and theranostics. Herein, red‐emissive carbonized polymer dots (CPDs)‐based helical structures were synthesized in this work via biomolecule‐tailored organic–inorganic co‐assembly strategy. The surface states‐related chirality exhibits enhanced circular dichroism (CD) and CPL activities with anisotropic factors as high as gCD,max = 5.4 × 10−3 and glum,max = 1.5 × 10−2, respectively. The obtained CPL signals can be further manipulated in an excitation‐dependent manner, indicating that a synergistic‐competition phenomenon exists between configurational chirality and intermolecular energy‐transfer dynamics, which is further supported by simulations based on density function theory (DFT). Such tunable CPL behavior triggers revolutionary designs and applications of these chiral CPDs into the realm of chirality‐related biological issues and next‐generation chiral optoelectronics.

Abstract:Main observation and conclusion Chiral supramolecular assembly of π‐conjugated luminophores provides a promising avenue for enhancing circularly polarized luminescence. In this study, we shed light on the impact of π‐conjugation length on circularly polarized luminescent performance of the resulting supramolecular assemblies, by designing a tetra‐cyanostilbene monomeric compound alongside two dicyanostilbene control compounds. These cyanostilbene‐based compounds possess the ability to form chiral supramolecular polymers in toluene, driven by a synergistic combination of intermolecular hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions. The extended π‐aromatic skeleton brings bathochromic‐shifted fluorescence and enhanced intermolecular stacking capability for the tetra‐cyanostilbene compound. Consequently, chiral supramolecular assemblies formed by the tetra‐cyanostilbene compound demonstrate a remarkable two‐fold increase in glum values relative to the assemblies formed by the dicyanostilbene compounds. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the relationship between π‐conjugation length and the circularly polarized luminescent performance of π‐conjugated supramolecular assemblies. Finely Controlled Circularly Polarized Luminescence of a Mechano-Responsive Supramolecular Polymer

Abstract:Finely controlled circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) supramolecular polymerization based on a tetraphenylethene core with four l- or d-alanine branch side chains (l-1 and d-1) in the solution state is presented, resulting from the tuning of mechanical stimulus. Weak, green emissions of l-1 and d-1 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) were converted into strong blue emissions by tuning the mechanical stimulus. The strong blue emissions were caused by an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect during the formation of a supramolecular polymer. Lag time in the supramolecular polymerization was drastically reduced by the mechanical stimulus, which was indicative of the acceleration of the supramolecular polymerization. A significant enhancement of circular dichroism (CD) and CPL signals of l-1 and d-1 was observed by tuning the rotational speed of the mechanical stimulus, implying that the chiral supramolecular polymerization was accelerated by the mechanical stimulus.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted much interest due to its potential applications on chiral photonic techniques and optoelectronic materials science. As known, dissymmetry factor (g(em)) of CPL is one essential factor for evaluating the features of CPL-active materials. Much attention has focused on how to increase the g(em) value, which is one of the most important issues for CPL practical applications. Recently, more and more works have demonstrated that chiral supramolecular could provide the significant strategy to improve the g(em) value through the orderly helical superstructure of chiral building blocks. Normally, this kind of chiral supramolecular assembly process can be accompanied by chirality transfer and induction mechanism, which can promote the amplification effect on the induced CPL of achiral dyes. In this review, we fully summarized recent advances on the induced CPL-active materials of chiral supramolecular co-assemblies, their applications in circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) and current challenges.

Abstract:Chiral supramolecular assembly can provide a powerful strategy for developing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials by forming helices or superhelices into single or multiple components. Herein, we chose three achiral liquid crystal polymers (LC-P1/P2/P3) and chiral binaphthyl-based inducers (R/S-M) with anchored dihedral angles to construct chiral co-assemblies and explore the induced CPL behavior from pyrenyl (Py) emitters in achiral LC polymers through the regulation of helical nanofibers during the supramolecular co-assembly process. Most interestingly, chiral co-assembly (R/S-M)0.1-(P3)0.9 emitted an inverted blue-colored CPL signal during thermal annealing treatment at the glass transition temperature due to the flexible main chain of the LC polymer (LC-P3). The strongest blue-colored CPL emission for the (R/S-M)0.1-(P3)0.9 spin-coated film (λem = 455 nm, |gem| = 6.47 × 10-2, ΦF = 48.5%) could be detected by using thermal annealing treatment at 105 °C.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials have received extensive interest due to their unique optical activity. An increasing number of research endeavors were focused on molecular design of excellent CPL materials to meet the requirement of optoelectronic applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), chiral sensing, information encryption, etc. CPL-active polymeric materials have demonstrated promising potential rooted in their superiority in scalability, flexibility, 3D-stacking capability and film-forming property. In this review, we survey and outline the development of CPL-active polymers focused on the polymer structure-dependent design strategy, including chiral side chain polymers, chiral main chain polymers, chiral coordination polymers and chiral induction systems involving polymer. We also highlight the recent applications of CPL-active polymers to make a clear statement about realistic significance. It is our hope that the system view of CPL-active polymer almost in the last ten years will offer new insights and inspirations in developing excellent polymers and promote the use of efficient and versatile CPL materials.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted broad interest due to its potential applications in advanced photonics and electronics. CPL is generally produced from chiral moieties-decorated π-conjugated molecules. Alternatively, CPL can be directly generated from achiral luminescent materials in helical and twisted supramolecular systems, which circumvents the tough and tedious syntheses in the traditional method. In particular, one-dimensional helical supramolecular systems in fibrous morphology are superior for CPL generation over those in spheroidal or planar structures, because of their high dissymmetry factors (glum). Efforts on one side are focused on the development of helical luminescent fibers with high glum, and on the other side, are directed toward the arrangement of nanofibers to produce scalable materials (films or fibers) with chiral activity. This review summarizes the recent advances in CPL generation from supramolecular systems, illustrating how the chirality transfer, amplification, and regulation of CPL are achieved in fibrous morphologies. Their working mechanisms at hierarchical length scales, including helical fibrous supramolecular assemblies at the nanoscale, chiral films constructed by helically-arranged nanofibers at the microscale, and macroscopic fibers via mechanical twisting, are described sequentially. Finally, the current challenges and future opportunities of the chiral system are also presented.

Dynamic Circularly Polarized Luminescence with Tunable Handedness and Intensity Enabled by Achiral Dichroic Dyes in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Medium

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are chiral supramolecular systems that self-assemble into a highly regular helical arrangement in a liquid crystal (LC) medium. Such an arrangement is highly beneficial for the chiral enlargement effect on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. Dichroic dyes with rod-like molecular structures can exhibit fluorescence anisotropy along both the long and short molecular axes owing to their transition dipole moment (TDM) vectors. In this work, a pair of donor-accepter (D-A) achiral dichroic dyes is prepared, namely, 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene derivative (P1, whose TDM vector is parallel to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| > F⊥ ) and anthraquinone derivative (N1, whose TDM vector is perpendicular to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| < F⊥ ). CLCs can be fabricated by doping P1 or N1 together with chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-derived inducers into SLC1717 medium. Dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity is achieved by changing the N1:P1 mass ratio, and the luminescence dissymmetry factor (gem ) value reaches |0.71|. This work describes the first observation of dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity enabled by TDM regulation of achiral dichroic dyes in a CLC medium.
