Abstract:High pressure x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on RMnO3 (R=Dy, Ho and Lu) reveals that varying structural changes occurs for different R ions. Large lattice changes (orthorhombic strain) occur in DyMnO3 and HoMnO3 while the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion remains stable. On the other hand, in LuMnO3, Mn-O bond distortions are observed in the region 4-8 GPa with the broad minimum in the JT distortion. High pressure IR measurements indicate that a phonon near 390 cm-1 corresponding to the complex motion of the Mn and O ions changes anomalously for LuMnO3. It softens in the 4-8 GPa region, which is consistent with the structural change in Mn-O bonds and then hardens at high pressures. By contrast, the phonons continuously harden with increasing pressure for DyMnO3 and HoMnO3. DFT calculations show that the E-phase LuMnO3 is the most stable phase up to the 10 GPa pressure examined. Simulations indicate that the distinct structural change under pressure in LuMnO3 can possibly be used to optimize the electric polarization by pressure/strain.

Abstract:Structural changes in REMnO3 (RE= Y, Ho, Lu) under high pressure were examined by synchrotron x-ray diffraction methods at room temperature. Compression occurs more readily in the ab plane than along the c-axis. Under hydrostatic pressure (~11 GPa), the atoms hold their approximate ambient fractional positions in the unit cell and the spontaneous polarization shows no significant change. With increased pressure, a pressure-induced hexagonal to orthorhombic phase transition was observed starting at ~ 22GPa for Lu(Y)MnO3. A small volume fraction of Lu(Y)MnO3 is converted to the orthorhombic phase when the pressure is increased to 35 GPa and the orthorhombic phase is maintained on pressure release. High pressure IR absorption spectroscopy and Mn K-edge near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy confirm that the hexagonal P63cm structure is stable below ~20 GPa and the environment around Mn ion is not changed. Abstract:We have investigated the structural, electrical and magnetic properties as well as the phonon modes of hexagonal rare-earth manganites (RMnO3, R = Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Lu) under chemical pressure, hydrostatic pressure and epitaxial strain by first-principles calculations. The magnetic ground state of RMnO3 is found to have Γ4 ?> magnetic configuration and to be stable under all considered external conditions. In contrast, the K3 phonon mode, which is the primary order parameter and responsible for the ‘improper ferroelectricity’, is greatly influenced by pressure and epitaxial strain. Consequently, the electric polarization is enhanced by 56.7% when the chemical pressure increases from R = Pr to R = Lu. The hydrostatic pressure can also improve the polarization to a certain degree, e.g. by 14.7% from 0 GPa to 40 GPa in LuMnO3. Finally, the dependence of polarization on the epitaxial strain is also given, revealing that the compressive strain could promote the ferroelectricity while tensile strain will suppress it.

Abstract:Owing to their structural complexity and wide range of possible chemical combinations, perovskite oxides exhibit many technically important physical properties. Pressure is a thermodynamic parameter which is useful for tuning physical properties; however, the response of the complex crystal structure to high pressure has not been thoroughly studied and rationalized. This study focuses on in situ high-pressure x-ray diffraction of the orthorhombic perovskite oxides A3+B3+O3, commonly found for the rare-earth transition-metal oxides of the RMO3 formula. Each of the four families of RMO3 (M=Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe) perovskites in this study all crystallize in the same orthorhombic perovskite structure with the Pbnm space group. The lanthanide contraction in these materials leads to varying degrees of orthorhombic distortions that are primarily associated with octahedral site rotations. The pressure-induced change of the lattice parameters demonstrates an evolution from a suppression to an enlargement of the orthorhombic distortion for substitution of the rare-earth element from R=La to Lu in RMO3 perovskites. This unusual crossover of the lattice parameters’ dependence on pressure contradict the results from first-principles calculation but can be rationalized by the intrinsic distortion of the perovskite structure.

Abstract:MnPS3, a novel ternary-layered material, hasattractedextensive attention in materials, physics, and chemistry owing toits excellent electrical transport and photoelectric properties. Pressureis a useful technique to explore unprecedented phenomena and propertiesin condensed matter. In this study, combining high-pressure Ramanspectroscopy, high-pressure absorption spectroscopy measurements,and first-principles calculations, the pressure-induced lattice andelectronic structural evolutions of multilayer MnPS3 wereuncovered. A pressure-induced lifted symmetry (layer sliding) of multilayerMnPS(3) from the C2/m-staggeredP-dimer phase (phase I) to P3 1m aligned P-dimer phase (phase II) at 6.7 GPa was demonstrated, evidencedby the overlap of E-g (5) and A(1g) (3) modes under high pressure and further first-principles calculations.Meanwhile, the linearly decreased optical band gap with pressure indicatedthat the charge-transfer excitations that define the gap were confinedin intra-slab in nature regardless of the interlayer sliding. Further calculated band gap structure also suggested that no obvious electronicstructural phase transition occurred in multilayer MnPS3 during the pressure-induced phase transition of multilayer MnPS3 except from a decreased band gap with pressure. In addition,both the results of absorption spectroscopy measurements and first-principlescalculation demonstrated that multilayer MnPS3 remainedto be a direct band gap semiconductor up to 21.8 GPa. Our findingsare of great significance in expanding the application of compressiveMnPS(3) in photoelectric devices.

Abstract:Using a method of in situ pressing X-ray diffraction, a uniaxial pressure-induced unusual change of lattice parameters and a remarkable crystal structural distortion have been observed in CMR perovskite La 0 83 Sr 0.17 MnO 3 . The pressure coefficient of lattice parameter in [200] orientation, i.e. d (ln d Mn-O-Mn )/dP can reach about 3.8 × 10 -4 MPa -1 . Under the uniaxial pressure of only about 20 MPa, a giant piezoresistance, magnetization enhancing and an evident increase of T p , the onset of the metal-semiconductor-like (M-S) transition, have also been obtained. These effects suggest that the structure of CMR perovskite is very flexible and their transport properties are very structurally sensitive.

Abstract:The multiferroic Ho0.8Dy0.2MnO3 compound crystallizing into hexagonal perovskite was investigated by using an in situ high pressure Raman scattering method at room temperature. It is found that with increasing pressure, the compound started to transform from hexagonal-type into an orthorhombic-type perovskite near 9.8GPa. The phase transition process is analyzed.

Abstract:We investigated both the dependence of electronic structures and spin states on pressure up to 25 GPa and the hybridization of Mn 3d states in BiMnO3 by combining measurements of x-ray absorption, x-ray emission, and 1s3p-resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES). The Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of BiMnO3 show a great change for pressure similar to 1 GPa, corresponding to the occurrence of a structural transition. The gradually diminished shoulder of the white line and subsequently increased intensity of the white line of Mn K-edge spectra on increasing the external pressure from 2 to similar to 15 GPa are attributed to a diminished Jahn-Teller distortion of MnO6 octahedra in BiMnO3 with increasing pressure. For pressure >similar to 15 GPa, the intensity of the white line in Mn K-edge spectra of BiMnO3 became progressively decreased. Preedge peaks in Mn K-edge spectra of BiMnO3 at P = 25 GPa shifted to smaller energy similar to 0.3 eV relative to P = 0.7 GPa. The spin magnetic moments deduced from the K beta emission line show a significant decrease for pressures between 0 and 2 GPa, then a monotonic decrease for pressures between 2 and 7 GPa, and a slight decrease after 7 GPa. The 1s3p-RXES spectra obtained at the Mn-K preedge for BiMnO3 reveal that the empty Mn 3d(e(g)(0)) states exhibit a delocalized character, suggested to originate from the hybridization of the unoccupied Mn 3d states with the Mn 4p orbitals. These findings provide insight into the evolution of electronic structures related to the structural transformation of multiferroic BiMnO3 under pressure.
The Structural Stability of Mn3Sn Heusler Compound under High Pressure.

Abstract:Pressure engineering has attracted growing interest in the understanding of structural changes and structure-property relations of layered materials. In this study, we investigated the effect of pressure on the crystal structure of Mn3Sn.In-situhigh-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments revealed that Mn3Sn maintained hexagonal lattice symmetry within the pressure range of ambient to 50.4 GPa. The ratio of lattice constantsc/ais almost independent of the pressure and remains constant at 0.80, indicating a stable cell shape. Density functional theory calculations revealed the strong correlation between the crystal structure and the localization ofdelectrons. The Mn3Sn has been found in flat energy bands near the Fermi level, exhibiting a large density of states (DOS) primarily contributed by thedelectrons. This large DOS near the Fermi level increases the energy barrier for a phase transition, making the transition from the hexagonal phase to the tetragonal phase challenging. Our results confirm the structural stability of Mn3Sn under high pressure, which is beneficial to the robustness of spintronic devices.

Abstract:Perovskite material studies encompass many fields such as energy harvesting, superconductivity, magnetism, and beyond. Thus, it is very important to investigate their structural varieties in external environments. Here, the pressure-induced structure change of a distorted perovskite, Y0.7Lu0.3AlO3, was examined by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Upon compression, it underwent an isostructural transition near 22 GPa. The quenchable high-pressure phase had a much higher bulk modulus than the low-pressure phase. This work shows the flexibility of perovskite distortion and will help to understand the property anomalies in prevailing perovskite ABO3 systems and design more functional materials.

Abstract:Spin crossover plays a central role in the structural instability, net magnetic moment modification, metallization, and even in superconductivity in corresponding materials. Most reports on the pressure-induced spin crossover with a large volume collapse have so far focused on compounds with a single transition metal. Here we report a comprehensive high-pressure investigation of a mixed Fe-Mn perovskite La2FeMnO6. Under pressure, the strong coupling between Fe andMn leads to a combined valence/spin transition: Fe3+(S = 5/2) -> Fe2+(S = 0) and Mn3+(S = 2) -> Mn4+(S = 3/2), with an isostructural phase transition. The spin transitions of both Fe and Mn are offset by similar to 20 GPa of the onset pressure, and the lattice collapse occurs in between. Interestingly, Fe3+ ion shows an abnormal behavior when it reaches a lower valence state (Fe2+) accompanied by a +0.5 eV energy shift in the Fe K-absorption edge at 15 GPa. This process is associated with the charge-spin-orbital state transition from high spin Fe3+ to low spin Fe2+, caused by the significantly enhanced t(2g)-e(g) crystal field splitting in the compressed lattice under high pressure. Density functional theory calculations confirm the energy preference of the high-pressure state with charge redistribution accompanied by spin state transition of Fe ions. Moreover, La2FeMnO6 maintains semiconductor behaviors even when the pressure reached 144.5 GPa as evidenced by the electrical transport measurements, despite the huge resistivity decreasing seven orders of magnitude compared with that at ambient pressure. The investigation carried out here demonstrates high flexibility of double perovskites and their good potentials for optimizing the functionality of these materials.

Abstract:Under a uniaxial pressure of 10 similar to 20 MPa, unusual changes of lattice parameters and remarkable structural distortions have been observed in CMR perovskite La1-xSrxMnO3(0.15 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.25). At the same time, the uniaxial pressure-induced change of transport properties has also been observed. The structural distortions were found to be in good agreement with the Bridgman equation. The pressure coefficients of the lattice parameters (delta ln d/delta P) can reach to about the magnitude of 10(-4)/MPa. These phenomena suggest that the lattice of the manganese perovskite is flexible and the versatility of the electronic and magnetic properties in the perovskites may relate to the lattice flexibility.

Effects of Pressure on Electron Transport and Local Structure of Manganites: Low to High Pressure Regime

Abstract:The pressure dependence of the resistivity and structure of La0.60Y0.07Ca0.33MnO3 has been explored in the pressure range from 1 atm to ~7 GPa. The metal to insulator transition temperature (TMI) was found to reach a maximum and the resistivity achieves a minimum at ~3.8 GPa. Beyond this pressure, TMI is reduced with a concomitant increase in the resistivity. Structural measurements at room temperature show that at low pressure (below 2 GPa) the Mn-O bond lengths are compressed. Between ~2 and ~4 GPa, a pressure induced enhancement of the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion occurs in parallel with an increase in Mn-O1-Mn bond angle to ~180 (degree). Above ~4 GPa, the Mn-O1-Mn bond angle is reduced while the JT distortion appears to remain unchanged. The resistivity above TMI is well modeled by variable range hopping. The pressure dependence of the localization length follows the behavior of TMI.

Abstract:The variation of electronic states and structural distortion in highly compressed multiferroic TbMnO3 was probed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) using synchrotron radiation. Refined XRD data enabled observation of a reduced local Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion of Mn sites within MnO6 octahedra in TbMnO3 with increasing hydrostatic pressure. A progressively increasing intensity of the white line in Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of TbMnO3 was detected with increasing pressure. The absorption threshold of Mn K-edge spectra of TbMnO3 is shifted toward higher energy, whereas the pre-edge peak is slightly shifted to lower energy with increasing hydrostatic pressure. We provide spectral evidence for pressure-induced bandwidth broadening for mangnites. The enhanced intensity of the white line and the shifted absorption threshold of Mn K-edge spectra are explained in terms of a reduced JT distortion of MnO6 octahedra in compressed TbMnO3. Comparison of XAS data with full-multiple-scattering calculations using code FDMNES shows satisfactory agreement between experimental and calculated Mn K-edge spectra.
Predicted Pressure-Induced Spin and Electronic Transition in Double Perovskite R2comno6 (R = Rare-Earth Ion)

Abstract:Specific first-principles calculations are performed to predict structural, magnetic and electronic properties of seven double perovskite R2CoMnO6 materials, with R being a rare-earth ion, under hydrostatic pressure. All these compounds are found to undergo a first-order transition from a high spin (HS) to low spin (LS) state at a critical pressure (whose value is dependent on the R ion). Such transition not only results in a significant volume collapse but also yields a dramatic change in electronic structure. More precisely, the HS-to-LS transition is accompanied by a transition from an insulator to a half-metallic state in the R2CoMnO6 compounds having the largest rare-earth ionic radius (i.e., Nd, Sm, Gd and Tb) while it induces a change from an insulator to a semiconductor having a narrow band gap for the smallest rare-earth ions (i.e., R = Dy, Ho and Er). Experiments are called for to confirm these predictions.

Abstract:The multiferroic material Pb3Mn7O15 3 Mn 7 O 15 exhibits a high resistivity arising from the orbital electrons localized around the manganese ions, which hinders its potential applications. Previous studies indicated that the resistivity of Pb3Mn7O15 3 Mn 7 O 15 was influenced by its crystal structure and the distribution of Mn ions. Consequently, pressure-induced structural change are expected to represent a viable method for tuning the resistivity and other properties of this compound. In the present study, the pressure effect on the resistivity of Pb3Mn7O15 3 Mn 7 O 15 was investigated up to 42 GPa. Furthermore, the X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy techniques, along with the density functional theory calculations were employed to study the crystal structure evolution of Pb3Mn7O15 3 Mn 7 O 15 under pressure. The results demonstrate an electronic semiconductor-metal phase transition in Pb3Mn7O15, 3 Mn 7 O 15 , accompanying an irreversible orthorhombic to monoclinic phase transition. Additionally, within the orthorhombic phase, an iso-structural phase transition is observed, originating from the magnetic moments collapse of manganese cations. This study provides compelling evidence that high-pressure processing can be employed to modulate the crystal structure and functional properties of multifunctional materials.
Pressure induced isostructural phase transition with volume expansion in DyFeO3 orthoferrite

Abstract:The orthorhombic O and O′ structure phases of AB O 3 -type perovskites possess the same symmetry and quite different physical properties. In this work, a pressure induced isostructural O′–O phase transition with volume expansion and less distortion in DyFeO 3 orthoferrite was experimentally observed and studied by high-pressure x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Up to 35.2 GPa, DyFeO 3 crystallizes in an orthorhombic Pbnm symmetry structure. With no change in the symmetry group, distinct O′-phase and O-phase were verified below 13.1 GPa and above 15.1 GPa, respectively. Meanwhile, the lattice becomes less distorted and metrically pseudo-cubic on the high-pressure side. The cell volume expands by a step in the intermediate pressure window accompanied by a decrease in spontaneous strain. It is suggested that FeO 6 octahedra are more compressible than DyO 12 sites under pressure. This work claimed the physical mechanism underlying phonon dynamics and variation of local structure symmetry of DyFeO 3 , which can be considered as the basic view for R FeO 3 perovskites.

Pressure tuning of hydrogen bond ordering in the metal-organic framework [(CH3)2NH2]Mn(HCOO)3

Abstract:The influence of pressure on the hydrogen bond ordering in the perovskite metal-organic framework [(CH3)2NH2]Mn(HCOO)3 has been investigated by dielectric, pyroelectric adn magnetic measurements in a piston-cylinder cell. Under ambient pressure the ordering of hydrogen bonds takes place at TC = 188 K and induces a first-order ferroelectric phase transition. With increasing pressure to p = 3.92 kbar, the order-disorder transition shifts to a lower temperature and retains the first-order ferroelectric nature. However, under higher pressures, the ordering process of hydrogen bonds is split into two transitions: a broad antiferroelectric transition at high temperature and a first-order ferroelectric transition at low temperature. With increasing pressure, the antiferroelectric phase is enhanced whereas the ferroelectric phase is greatly suppressed, which implies that compression of the perovskite framework favors antiparallel arrangement of the hydrogen bonds. The canted anti-ferromagnetic transition was almost unchanged when pressure up to 10.85 kbar. Our study demonstrated that the perovskite metal-organic frameworks are more sensitive to external pressure than conventional perovskite oxides so that their electric properties can be easily tuned by pressure.
