Abstract:The presence of highlight can lead to erroneous results in Computer Vision applications such as edge detection, and motion tracking. Many algorithms have been developed to detect and remove highlight. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective method for detecting and removal of highlight. We first use a window to help to remove the noise and reduce the data amount for analysis. We then apply K-means algorithm in a 5-D vector space to computer diffuse chromaticity. In the case of non-white illuminant, illuminant chromaticity is estimated in the inverse-intensity space, and we use Fuzzy C-mean clustering and linear fitting to get illuminant chromaticity. Finally, we use Specular-to-Diffuse mechanism to separate specular reflection component from image. Experiments show that it is robust and can give good results.
Specular Reflections Detection and Removal for Endoscopic Images Based on Brightness Classification

Abstract:Specular Reflections often exist in the endoscopic image, which not only hurts many computer vision algorithms but also seriously interferes with the observation and judgment of the surgeon. The information behind the recovery specular reflection areas is a necessary pre-processing step in medical image analysis and application. The existing highlight detection method is usually only suitable for medium-brightness images. The existing highlight removal method is only applicable to images without large specular regions, when dealing with high-resolution medical images with complex texture information, not only does it have a poor recovery effect, but the algorithm operation efficiency is also low. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a specular reflection detection and removal method for endoscopic images based on brightness classification. It can effectively detect the specular regions in endoscopic images of different brightness and can improve the operating efficiency of the algorithm while restoring the texture structure information of the high-resolution image. In addition to achieving image brightness classification and enhancing the brightness component of low-brightness images, this method also includes two new steps: In the highlight detection phase, the adaptive threshold function that changes with the brightness of the image is used to detect absolute highlights. During the highlight recovery phase, the priority function of the exemplar-based image inpainting algorithm was modified to ensure reasonable and correct repairs. At the same time, local priority computing and adaptive local search strategies were used to improve algorithm efficiency and reduce error matching. The experimental results show that compared with the other state-of-the-art, our method shows better performance in terms of qualitative and quantitative evaluations, and the algorithm efficiency is greatly improved when processing high-resolution endoscopy images.
SIHRNet: a fully convolutional network for single image highlight removal with a real-world dataset

Abstract:Specular highlight in images is detrimental to accuracy in object recognition tasks. The prior model-based methods for single image highlight removal (SHIR) are limited in images with large highlight regions or achromatic regions, and recent learning-based methods do not perform well due to lack of proper datasets for training either. A network for SHIR is proposed, which is trained with losses that utilize image intrinsic features and can reconstruct a smooth and natural specular-free image from a single input highlight image. Dichromatic reflection model is used to compute the pseudo specular-free image for providing complementary information for the network. A real-world dataset with highlight images and the corresponding ground-truth specular-free images is collected for network training and quantitative evaluation. The proposed network is validated by comprehensive quantitative experiments and outperforms state-of-the-art highlight removal approaches in structural similarity and peak signal-to-noise ratio. Experimental results also show that the network could improve the recognition performance in applications of computer vision. Our source code is available at https://github.com/coach-wang/SIHRNet. Beyond Camera Motion Removing: How to Handle Outliers in Deblurring

Abstract:Performing camera motion deblurring is an important low-level vision task for achieving better imaging quality. When a scene has outliers such as saturated pixels and salt-and pepper noise, the image becomes more difficult to restore. In this paper, we propose an edge-aware scalerecurrent network (EASRN) to conduct camera motion deblurring. EASRN has a separate deblurring module that removes blur at multiple scales and an upsampling module that fuses different input scales. We propose a salient edge detection network to supervise the training process and solve the outlier problem by proposing a novel method of dataset generation. Light streaks are printed on the sharp image to simulate the cutoff effect from saturation. We evaluate our method on the GoPro dataset, Kohler's dataset and Lai's dataset. Both objective evaluation indexes and subjective visualization show that our method results in better deblurring quality than do other state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:This paper presents a fully automatic method for the separation of diffuse and specular reflection components from a single image. Overall, the mechanisms in which the available methods operate on are computationally costly and do not translate well to modern hardware-implemented image processing pipelines, such as the ones present in consumer electronics. Consequently, the objective of this article is to introduce a simple yet effective method for specular highlight removal. It is based on the dichromatic reflection model and operates through histogram matching in the YCbCr color space. The proposed method performs in real-time. It only uses global image statistics and point-wise intensity transformations. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed approach has competitive results in comparison to state-of-the-art methods. Limitations of the proposed approach are seldom and are common to most methods available. The proposed method, however, achieves better quality results with much less computational cost, thus enabling feasibility in systems with limited processing power.

Abstract:Colonoscopy video frames might be contaminated by bright spots with unsaturated values known as specular reflection. Detection and removal of such reflections could enhance the quality of colonoscopy images and facilitate diagnosis procedure. In this paper we propose a novel two-phase method for this purpose, consisting of detection and removal phases. In the detection phase, we employ both HSV and RGB color space information for segmentation of specular reflections. We first train a non-linear SVM for selecting a color space based on image statistical features extracted from each channel of the color spaces. Then, a cost function for detection of specular reflections is introduced. In the removal phase, we propose a two-step inpainting method which consists of appropriate replacement patch selection and removal of the blockiness effects. The proposed method is evaluated by testing on an available colonoscopy image database where accuracy and Dice score of 99.68% and 71.79% are achieved respectively.

A Hessian-Based Technique for Specular Reflection Detection and Inpainting in Colonoscopy Images

Abstract:In the field of Computer-Aided Detection (CADx), the use of AI-based algorithms for disease detection in endoscopy images, especially colonoscopy images, is on the rise. However, these algorithms often encounter performance issues due to obstructions like specular reflection, resulting in false positives. This paper presents a novel algorithm specifically designed to tackle the challenges posed by high specular reflection regions in colonoscopy images. The proposed algorithm identifies these regions and applies precise inpainting for restoration. The process entails converting the input image from RGB to HSV color space and focusing on the Saturation (S) component in convex regions detected using a Hessian-based method. This step creates a binary mask that pinpoints areas of specular reflection. The inpainting function then uses this mask to guide the restoration of these identified regions and their borders. To ensure a seamless blend of the restored regions with the background and adjacent pixels, a feathering process is applied to the repaired regions. This enhances both the accuracy and aesthetic coherence of the inpainted images. The performance of our algorithm was rigorously tested on five unique colonoscopy datasets and various endoscopy images from the Kvasir dataset, using an extensive set of evaluation metrics and a comparative analysis with existing methods consistently highlighted the superior performance of our algorithm.

Abstract:We present a method for removing specular highlight reflections in facial images that may contain varying illumination colors. This is accurately achieved through the use of physical and statistical properties of human skin and faces. We employ a melanin and hemoglobin based model to represent the diffuse color variations in facial skin, and utilize this model to constrain the highlight removal solution in a manner that is effective even for partially saturated pixels. The removal of highlights is further facilitated through estimation of directionally variant illumination colors over the face, which is done while taking advantage of a statistically-based approximation of facial geometry. An important practical feature of the proposed method is that the skin color model is utilized in a way that does not require color calibration of the camera. Moreover, this approach does not require assumptions commonly needed in previous highlight removal techniques, such as uniform illumination color or piecewise-constant surface colors. We validate this technique through comparisons to existing methods for removing specular highlights.

Abstract:Endoscopic imaging systems have been widely used in disease diagnosis and minimally invasive surgery. Practically, specular reflection (a.k.a. highlight) always exists in endoscopic images and significantly affects surgeons’ observation and judgment. Motivated by the fact that the values of the red channel in nonhighlight area of endoscopic images are higher than those of the green and blue ones, this paper proposes an adaptive specular highlight detection method for endoscopic images. Specifically, for each pixel, we design a criterion for specular highlight detection based on the ratio of the red channel to both the green and blue channels. With the designed criteria, we take advantage of image segmentation and then develop an adaptive threshold with respect to the differences between the red channel and the other ones of neighboring pixels. To validate the proposed method, we conduct experiments on clinical data and CVC-ClinicSpec open database. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method yields an averaged Precision , Accuracy , and F 1 -score rate of 88.76%, 99.60% and 72.56%, respectively, and outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches based on color distribution reported for endoscopic highlight detection.

Abstract:Specular reflection removal is indispensable to many computer vision tasks. However, most existing methods fail or degrade in complex real scenarios for their individual drawbacks. Benefiting from the light field imaging technology, this paper proposes a novel and accurate approach to remove specularity and improve image quality. We first capture images with specularity by the light field camera (Lytro ILLUM). After accurately estimating the image depth, a simple and concise threshold strategy is adopted to cluster the specular pixels into "unsaturated" and "saturated" category. Finally, a color variance analysis of multiple views and a local color refinement are individually conducted on the two categories to recover diffuse color information. Experimental evaluation by comparison with existed methods based on our light field dataset together with Stanford light field archive verifies the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Objective. Endoscopic imaging is a visualization method widely used in minimally invasive surgery. However, owing to the strong reflection of the mucus layer on the organs, specular highlights often appear to degrade the imaging performance. Thus, it is necessary to develop an effective highlight removal method for endoscopic imaging. Approach. A specular highlight removal method using a partial attention network (PatNet) for endoscopic imaging is proposed to reduce the interference of bright light in endoscopic surgery. The method is designed as two procedures: highlight segmentation and endoscopic image inpainting. Image segmentation uses brightness threshold based on illumination compensation to divide the endoscopic image into the highlighted mask and the non-highlighted area. The image inpainting algorithm uses a partial convolution network that integrates an attention mechanism. A mask dataset with random hopping points is designed to simulate specular highlight in endoscopic imaging for network training. Through the filtering of masks, the method can focus on recovering defective pixels and preserving valid pixels as much as possible. Main results. The PatNet is compared with 3 highlight segmentation methods, 3 imaging inpainting methods and 5 highlight removal methods for effective analysis. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides better performance in terms of both perception and quantification. In addition, surgeons are invited to score the processing results for different highlight removal methods under realistic reflection conditions. The PatNet received the highest score of 4.18. Correspondingly, the kendall's W is 0.757 and the asymptotic significance p=0.000<0.01, revealing that the subjective scores have good consistency and confidence. Significance. Generally, the method can realize irregular shape highlight reflection removal and image restoration close to the ground truth of endoscopic images. This method can improve the quality of endoscopic imaging for accurate image analysis.

A Temporal Learning Approach to Inpainting Endoscopic Specularities and Its effect on Image Correspondence

Abstract:Video streams are utilised to guide minimally-invasive surgery and diagnostic procedures in a wide range of procedures, and many computer assisted techniques have been developed to automatically analyse them. These approaches can provide additional information to the surgeon such as lesion detection, instrument navigation, or anatomy 3D shape modeling. However, the necessary image features to recognise these patterns are not always reliably detected due to the presence of irregular light patterns such as specular highlight reflections. In this paper, we aim at removing specular highlights from endoscopic videos using machine learning. We propose using a temporal generative adversarial network (GAN) to inpaint the hidden anatomy under specularities, inferring its appearance spatially and from neighbouring frames where they are not present in the same location. This is achieved using in-vivo data of gastric endoscopy (Hyper-Kvasir) in a fully unsupervised manner that relies on automatic detection of specular highlights. System evaluations show significant improvements to traditional methods through direct comparison as well as other machine learning techniques through an ablation study that depicts the importance of the network's temporal and transfer learning components. The generalizability of our system to different surgical setups and procedures was also evaluated qualitatively on in-vivo data of gastric endoscopy and ex-vivo porcine data (SERV-CT, SCARED). We also assess the effect of our method in computer vision tasks that underpin 3D reconstruction and camera motion estimation, namely stereo disparity, optical flow, and sparse point feature matching. These are evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively and results show a positive effect of specular highlight inpainting on these tasks in a novel comprehensive analysis.

Abstract:Objective: Highlights always occur in endoscopic images due to their special imaging environment. It not only increases the difficulty of observation and diagnosis from surgeons, but also influences the performance of Mixed/Augmented Reality techniques in surgery navigation. Methods: In this paper, we propose a novel accelerated adaptive non-convex robust principal component analysis method (AANC-RPCA) to remove highlights in endoscopic images. We first detect absolute highlight pixels of the enhanced endoscopic images with adaptive threshold segmentation. The quasi-convex function is proposed to approximate a new non-convex objective function. With detected highlight pixels and quasi-convex function, it introduces gradient to shrink sparse matrix and obtains a faster speed of convergence. Then we divide the image into multiple blocks and perform the parallel computation to enhance the efficiency. Finally, we design a weighted template that decays outward with dilation and linear filtering to reconstruct the endoscopic images. Our approach is almost independent of hyper-parameters and can achieve adaptive decomposition. Results: It has been verified on multiple types of endoscopic images through experiments and clinical blind tests. The results demonstrate that our method can obtain the best performance for the recovered images with more details in a shorter time (about 3-5 times). Conclusion: Coupled with the user study, both the quantitative and qualitative results indicate that our approach has the potential to be highly useful in endoscopy images. Compared with the existing highlight removal approaches, our method obtains the SOTA results and has the potential to be applied in the various medical processing processes.

Abstract:The outcome of endoscopic tasks can be significantly affected by the presence of specular reflections. Although numerous methods have been proposed for specular reflection detection and suppression from endoscopic images, they are inefficient, usually require tedious empirical parameters selection, and perform poorly when handling large specular regions. To this end, we propose a robust and efficient deep learning framework termed EasySpec for identifying and suppressing specular reflections from endoscopic images. Our proposed EasySpec consists of two stages: a detection stage and a suppression stage. The former stage is performed using a lightweight UNet-variant dubbed Scaled-UNet, which is trained exploiting a novel hybrid strategy that integrates the advantages of both transfer learning and weakly supervised techniques. The latter stage is achieved utilizing the concept of deep image inpainting. Specifically, a new and fast end-to-end approach for inpainting multi-size specular reflection regions in endoscopic images is developed. Our proposed approach termed GatedResUNet, takes advantage of the gated convolution to accurately differentiate specular pixels from non-specular pixels, and the U-Net architecture to learn multi-level semantic representative features, which helps reconstruct more realistic and semantically plausible images. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments on several endoscopic datasets acquired from different MIS scenes reveal that our proposed EasySpec outperforms state-of-the-art endoscopic specular reflection suppression approaches. Specifically, EasySpec generalizes well on various MIS scenes, and can properly reconstruct blood vessels and fine details in a reasonable processing time, which validates its practical significance.

Abstract:Highlight removal is a fundamental and challenging task that has been an active field for decades. Although several methods have recently been improved for facial images, they are typically designed for a single image. This paper presents a lightweight optimization method for removing the specular highlight reflections of multi-view facial images. This is achieved by taking full advantage of the Lambertian consistency, which states that the diffuse component does not vary with the change in the viewing angle, while the specular component changes the behavior. We provide non-negative constraints on light and shading in all directions, rather than normal directions contained in the face, to obtain physically reliable properties. The removal of highlights is further facilitated through the estimation of illumination chromaticity, which is done by employing orthogonal subspace projection. An important practical feature of the proposed method does not require face reflectance priors. A dataset with ground truth for highlight removal of multi-view facial images is captured to quantitatively evaluate the performance of our method. We demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of our method through comparisons to existing methods for removing specular highlights and improvement in applications such as reconstruction.

Abstract:PCR amplification of the rRNA gene is the most popular method for assessing microbial diversity. However, this molecular marker is often present in multiple copies in cells presenting, in addition, an intragenomic heterogeneity. In this context, housekeeping genes may be used as taxonomic markers for ecological studies. However, the efficiency of these protein-coding genes compared to 16S rRNA genes has not been tested on environmental data. For this purpose, five protein marker genes for which primer sets are available, were selected (rplB, pyrG, fusA, leuS and rpoB) and compared with 16S rRNA gene results from PCR amplification or metagenomic data from aquatic ecosystems. Analysis of the major groups found in these ecosystems, such as Actinobacteria, Bacteroides, Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria, showed good agreement between the protein markers and the results given by 16S rRNA genes from metagenomic reads. However, with the markers it was possible to detect minor groups among the microbial assemblages, providing more details compared to 16S rRNA results from PCR amplification. In addition, the use of a set of protein markers made it possible to deduce a mean copy number of rRNA operons. This average estimate is essentially lower than the one estimated in sequenced genomes.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel and effective method based on dichromatic reflection model (DRM) and total variation (TV) optimization with light field camera is proposed to remove specular highlight. The unique feature of proposed method is that both diffuse components and specular components can be obtained by analyzing the tristimulus integration of DRM, which uses the characteristics of multiple views of the light field camera. In addition, the TV optimization model based on local noise window is established to eliminate texture aliasing through regarding the occlusion of local window as noises. After that, a strategy of specular-free-ratio and image entropy is designed to quantitatively evaluate the quality of highlight removal. Finally, extensive experiments including visual imaging and depth reconstruction for comparison with the state-of-the-art methods show that the proposed method can effectively restore the highlight information, which will be useful for 3D reconstruction of highly reflective surfaces. Generally, our method can fully detect and process all highlights with stronger robustness, and outstanding resilience for challenging or noising scenes.

Abstract:Removing undesirable specular highlight from a single input image is of crucial importance to many computer vision and graphics tasks. Existing methods typically remove specular highlight for medical images and specific-object images, however, they cannot handle the images with text. In addition, the impact of specular highlight on text recognition is rarely studied by text detection and recognition community. Therefore, in this paper, we first raise and study the text-aware single image specular highlight removal problem. The core goal is to improve the accuracy of text detection and recognition by removing the highlight from text images. To tackle this challenging problem, we first collect three high-quality datasets with fine-grained annotations, which will be appropriately released to facilitate the relevant research. Then, we design a novel two-stage network, which contains a highlight detection network and a highlight removal network. The output of highlight detection network provides additional information about highlight regions to guide the subsequent highlight removal network. Moreover, we suggest a measurement set including the end-to-end text detection and recognition evaluation and auxiliary visual quality evaluation. Extensive experiments on our collected datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:Specular highlight removal is a challenging task in the field of image enhancement, while it can significantly improve the quality of image in highlight regions. Recently, deep learning-based methods have been widely adopted in this task, demonstrating excellent performance by training on either massive paired data, wherein both the highlighted and highlight-free versions of the same image are available, or unpaired datasets where the one-to-one correspondence is inapplicable. However, it is difficult to obtain the corresponding highlight-free version of a highlight image, as the latter has already been produced under specific lighting conditions. In this paper, we propose a method for weakly supervised specular highlight removal that only requires highlight images. This method involves generating highlight-free images from highlight images with the guidance of masks estimated using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). These highlight-free images are then fed consecutively into a series of modules derived from a Cycle Generative Adversarial Network (Cycle-GAN)-style network, namely the highlight generation, highlight removal, and reconstruction modules in sequential order. These modules are trained jointly, resulting in a highly effective highlight removal module during the verification. On the specular highlight image quadruples (SHIQ) and the LIME datasets, our method achieves an accuracy of 0.90 and a balance error rate (BER) of 8.6 on SHIQ, and an accuracy of 0.89 and a BER of 9.1 on LIME, outperforming existing methods and demonstrating its potential for improving image quality in various applications.
