Abstract:As a thermochromic material, vanadium dioxide (VO2) has great application potential in smart windows. It has always been the focus of research to improve the visible light transmittance (Tlum) and solar modulation ability (ΔTsol) while reducing the phase transition temperature (Tc) of VO2. To achieve this goal, tungsten-doped VO2 nanoparticles (W-VO2 NPs) with a Tc of 34 °C were used to form composite films with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) by a simple method. High ΔTsol of 14.2% was obtained at the optimized volumetric concentration of W-VO2 and film thickness. The W-VO2/SiO2/PVP composite films were proposed to further improve Tlum and ΔTsol. Compared with the W-VO2/PVP composite film with the same thickness and volumetric concentration of W-VO2, Tlum of the film is increased by 19.3% (from 54.5% to 65%) with the introduction of SiO2 microspheres, while the ΔTsol is maintained satisfactorily at 12.6%. This is mainly due to the monolayer dispersed SiO2 microspheres providing optical pathways in the film, which greatly improves Tlum with a slight sacrifice of ΔTsol. Indoor temperature of a scale-model room with W-VO2/SiO2/PVP film-coated glass was 9.1 °C lower than that with blank glass due to the isolation effect of metallic W-VO2 on near-infrared radiation. This work provides a new strategy for promoting the development of VO2 thermochromic smart windows.

Abstract:To enhance the practical utility of Vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) for thermochromic smart window applications, researchers have exerted numerous endeavors to improve its luminous transmittance ( T lum ), and solar modulation ability (Δ T sol ), lower the phase transition temperature ( T t ), and narrow the thermal hysteresis curve (Δ T ). In this study, thin hexagonal periodic perforated metal Vanadium films were prepared by magnetron sputtering using SiO 2 microspheres as templates. Subsequently, the thin metal Vanadium film was subjected to rapid thermal annealing (RTA), developing a densely packed hexagonal network structure composed of VO 2 nanoparticles. The formation of the nanoparticles was driven by increased surface mass transport during annealing and the imperative to reduce the system's surface energy. Compared with the planar VO 2 film, the two-dimensional nanostructure increases T lum from 29.98 to 61.82%, decreases T t from 55.91 to 44.44 °C, decreases Δ T from 15.18 to 4.98 °C, and slightly attenuates the Δ T sol from 5.92 to 3.84%. These enhancements are attributable to the reduced refractive index, the improved uniformity in particle size distribution, and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Moreover, the thermochromic properties were further augmented through a layer-by-layer stacking process. These findings underscore the potential for advancing the integration of VO 2 particles in smart window technologies, thereby broadening their application prospects.

Abstract:Monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO2(M)) can smartly regulate solar irradiation through its reversible semiconductor to metal transition, which has been widely investigated for the application in thermochromic smart windows. The poor durability, low solar modulation ability (ΔTsol), and luminous transmittance (Tlum) of high-purity VO2(M) film are the main obstacle for its commercial application. Nanocompositing can significantly improve the ΔTsol and Tlum, but the process is complex, expensive, and incompatible with large scale manufacturing procedures. We develop a facile way to fabricate HfO2/nanocomposite vanadium oxide bilayer films through room temperature magnetron sputtering and air environment rapid thermal annealing process. The nanocomposite vanadium oxide layer makes up of VO2, V2O5, and V3O7. The V2O5 and V3O7 components have a lower refractive index than VO2 function as antireflection. The HfO2 layer can act as a protective layer and antireflective layer at the same time. Meanwhile, the HfO2 can avoid contact with hazardous V2O5 from coming in touch with the environment. The bilayer structure presents Tlum of 51.6% and ΔTsol of 15.4%. The accelerated test suggested that the expected service life of this film is 21 years. This work provides a facile strategy to fabricate good thermochromic performance, excellent durability, and environment-friendly thermochromic smart windows.

Gate-controlled VO2 Phase Transition for High-Performance Smart Windows.

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a promising material for developing energy-saving "smart windows," owing to its infrared thermochromism induced by metal-insulator transition (MIT). However, its practical application is greatly limited by its relatively high critical temperature (~68°C), low luminous transmittance (<60%), and poor solar energy regulation ability (<15%). Here, we developed a reversible and nonvolatile electric field control of the MIT of a monoclinic VO2 film. With a solid electrolyte layer assisting gating treatment, we modulated the insertion/extraction of hydrogen into/from the VO2 lattice at room temperature, causing tristate phase transitions that enable control of light transmittance. The dramatic increase in visible/infrared transmittance due to the phase transition from the metallic (lightly H-doped) to the insulating (heavily H-doped) phase results in an increased solar energy regulation ability up to 26.5%, while maintaining 70.8% visible luminous transmittance. These results break all previous records and exceed the theoretical limit for traditional VO2 smart windows, making them ready for energy-saving utilization.

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a potential candidate in smart window application field owing to its reversible and automatic first-order insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) at 341K which can induce dramatic changes of transmittance in near infrared band through MIT. However, the low Tlum (visible light transmittance) below 40% and ΔTsol (solar modulation efficiency) below 10% of pure VO2 films have severely constrained the practical application in smart windows. In this paper, by etching the VO2 films fabricated by magnetron sputtering with sodium hydroxide solution, the VO2 films with improved optical properties were obtained. Specifically, the Tlum increased to 42.6% and the ΔTsol decreased to 15.5% for 150 nm VO2 films after 9 min etching, the Tlum increased to 56.4% and the ΔTsol decreased to 12.2% for 150 nm VO2 films after 12 min etching, respectively, comparing with the unetched film of 150 nm (Tlum:16.9%, ΔTsol:16.3%). Furthermore, we synthetically investigated the influences of etching on the IMT properties and molecular structure of the VO2 films through characterizations such as Raman spectra, XRD, XPS and SEM. The proposed methods represented a facile and cost-effective approach for enhancing thermochromic properties that could promote the application of VO2 thin films in smart windows.

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) emerges as an attractive plasmonic material due to its unique reversible thermal-responsive phase transition and the promising application in energy-saving smart windows. Here, by optimizing the geometry of VO2 nano-cylinder arrays, we demonstrate a significant performance enhancement for energy-efficient thermochromic windows. Such a performance enhancement relies on the on-off behavior of plasmonic resonance in the extremely high packing density of VO2 nano-cylinder arrays. Different from the typical plasmonic material, silver, VO2 nano-cylinders are characterized to have strong absorbance in near-infrared spectrum with significantly weaker plasmonic coupling to their neighbors, making them suitable to be arranged with a high packing density. The VO2 nano-cylinder arrays exhibit a 160% luminous transmittance increment, comparing to a flat film with the same solar modulation of ∼10%. The work provides a better understanding of the plasmonic behavior on phase-change VO2 and an efficient method to enhance smart window performance.

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) has received widespread attention for energy-efficient smart windows because of its distinct thermochromic property in the near-infrared region during the reversible metal-insulator phase transition. In this study, lepidocrocite VOOH ultrafine nanoparticles (NPs) with a diameter less than 30 nm were prepared by a mild but efficient hydrothermal method, and the Kirkendall effect plays a vital role in during the growth of VOOH NPs. It was found that VOOH could be transformed into VO2 via subsequent annealing treatment during which the size and morphology of VOOH are well preserved even though the annealing temperature is up to 500 °C. The ultrafine VO2 NPs are crucial for achieving excellent nanothermochromic performance which has luminous transmittance (Tlum) up to 56.45% and solar modulation ability (ΔTsol) up to 14.95%. The environment durability is well improved by coating VO2 NPs with SiO2 shell, which can be confirmed via progressive oxidation and acid corrosion experiment. Meanwhile, the Tlum of VO2@SiO2 film is further increased from 56.45% to 62.29% while the ΔTsol retained unchanged. Such integrated thermochromic performance presents great potential for the development of VO2-based smart window.

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) could be a good candidate for thermochromic materials due to the characteristic features of phase transition and discoloration. However, the high phase transition temperature (Tc) of 68 degrees C becomes the limitation of its practical application. In this work, a cost-effective fabrication method was developed to prepare W-doped thermochromic VO2 with a low phase transition temperature. Herein, tungsten (W) was introduced into an O-V-O system via a simple hydrothermal method, followed by annealing in an argon atmosphere to reduce the Tc of VO2. The results show that the micromorphology of VO2 changed significantly from rectangular to continuous sheet-like and that the particle size was increased after W-doping. Annealing could decrease the size of undoped VO2, and the morphology became an inhomogeneous and disordered cusplike shape. In addition, annealing made the W-doped VO2 particles with a larger size exhibit crimps, shrinkage and collapse. The Tc of VO2 (M phase to R phase) was reduced to 34.3 degrees C, 18.6 degrees C and 10.6 degrees C with W-doping levels of 1.5 at%, 2.0 at% and 3.0 at% at annealing temperatures of 500 degrees C, 550 degrees C and 500 degrees C, respectively. Infrared spectra indicate that the largest integrated infrared transmittance was increased from 51.78% to 81.91% (sample of S-22). Therefore, W-doped thermochromic VO2 could be a promising candidate for applications in printing, sensors and optical devices as functional materials.
Thermochromic VO2 thin films: solution-based processing, improved optical properties, and lowered phase transformation temperature

Abstract:This paper describes a solution-phase synthesis of high-quality vanadium dioxide thermochromic thin films. The films obtained showed excellent visible transparency and a large change in transmittance at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths before and after the metal-insulator phase transition (MIPT). For a 59 nm thick single-layer VO(2) thin film, the integral values of visible transmittance (T(int)) for metallic (M) and semiconductive (S) states were 54.1% and 49.1%, respectively, while the NIR switching efficiencies (DeltaT) were as high as 50% at 2000 nm. Thinner films can provide much higher transmittance of visible light, but they suffer from an attenuation of the switching efficiency in the near-infrared region. By varying the film thickness, ultrahigh T(int) values of 75.2% and 75.7% for the M and S states, respectively, were obtained, while the DeltaT at 2000 nm remained high. These results represent the best data for VO(2) to date. Thicker films in an optimized range can give enhanced NIR switching efficiencies and excellent NIR blocking abilities; in a particularly impressive experiment, one film provided near-zero NIR transmittance in the switched state. The thickness-dependent performance suggests that VO(2) will be of great use in the objective-specific applications. The reflectance and emissivity at the wavelength range of 2.5-25 microm before and after the MIPT were dependent on the film thickness; large contrasts were observed for relatively thick films. This work also showed that the MIPT temperature can be reduced simply by selecting the annealing temperature that induces local nonstoichiometry; a MIPT temperature as low as 42.7 degrees C was obtained by annealing the film at 440 degrees C. These properties (the high visible transmittance, the large change in infrared transmittance, and the near room-temperature MIPT) suggest that the current method is a landmark in the development of this interesting material toward applications in energy-saving smart windows.

Abstract:As an ideal thermochromic material for smart windows, vanadium dioxide (VO2(M)) has been receiving wide research interest in recent years. Enhancing the optical switching ability before and after phase transformation of the VO2(M) (i.e., enhancing the solar regulation efficiency ΔT sol while maintaining a great luminous transmittance T lum) is the target for its application in smart windows. However, the recrystallized growth in the annealing process ruins the thermochromic performance of VO2(M) nanoparticles (NPs). Here, we report the preparation and thermochromic performance of VO2(M)@SiO2 NPs. It was found that the SiO2 shell can effectively protect VO2(M) NPs from growth in the annealing process, and the VO2(M)@SiO2 NP film exhibits an excellent thermochromic performance with ΔT sol of 18.9% and T lum of 38% after annealing at 450 °C, because of the outstanding contribution of the enhancement and blue-shifting of the localized surface plasmon resonance. Our results provide an efficient way to synthesize VO2(M) NPs with excellent thermochromic performance for smart windows.

Abstract:Abstract Vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) has attracted widespread attention due to its extraordinary thermochromic properties. Visually transparent VO 2 films hold great promise for applying in smart windows, smart radiative coolers, solar cells, and microwave absorbing windows. However, it remains a huge challenge to simultaneously achieve ultra‐high luminous transmittance ( T lum ) and excellent thermochromic performance due to their contradictory relationship. Here, a fully discrete VO 2 particulate (FDVP) film is developed. It shows an ultra‐high T lum of 92.7% due to the reflectance being significantly reduced. Below the phase transition temperature ( T c , 69.1 °C), it is highly transparent to near‐infrared (NIR) light, while above T c , it blocks NIR light through the strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, resulting in an excellent solar energy modulation (Δ T sol ) of 10.5% for smart windows. In addition, a 3.5 at.%W‐doped FDVP film exhibits a desired T c of 25.8 °C, an extremely narrow hysteresis width (Δ T ) of 4.6 °C, and good optical properties ( T lum = 92.0%, Δ T sol = 8.2%). The performance represents a new milestone for thermochromic VO 2 films. This work will shed light on the structural design for high‐performance VO 2 films.

Enhanced Thermochromic Performance of VO2 Nanoparticles by Quenching Process

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) has been a promising energy-saving material due to its reversible metal-insulator transition (MIT) performance. However, the application of VO2 films has been seriously restricted due to the intrinsic low solar-energy modulation ability (ΔTsol) and low luminous transmittance (Tlum) of VO2. In order to solve the problems, the surface structure of VO2 particles was regulated by the quenching process and the VO2 dispersed films were fabricated by spin coating. Characterizations showed that the VO2 particles quenched in deionized water or ethanolreserved VO2(M) phase structure and they were accompanied by surface lattice distortion compared to the pristine VO2. Such distortion structure contributed to less aggregation and highly individual dispersion of the quenched particles in nanocomposite films. The corresponding film of VO2 quenched in water exhibited much higher ΔTsol with an increment of 42.5% from 8.8% of the original VO2 film, because of the significant localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. The film fabricated from the VO2 quenched in ethanol presented enhanced thermochromic properties with 15.2% of ΔTsol and 62.5% of Tlum. It was found that the excellent Tlum resulted from the highly uniform dispersion state of the quenched VO2 nanoparticles. In summary, the study provided a facile way to fabricate well-dispersed VO2 nanocomposite films and to facilitate the industrialization development of VO2 thermochromic films in the smart window field.

Abstract:The ultrahigh transparent VO2 films with surface nanoparticles had been prepared by combining the high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) with the post-annealing. The single-sided VO2 thin film with an ultrahigh luminous transmittance (Tlum) of 82.9% exhibited a transparent vision with solar modulation ability (ΔTsol) of 6.1%, and the double-sided VO2 thin film provided an excellent ΔTsol of 9.3% while Tlum maintained at 70.6%. The size of VO2 nanoparticles was effectively controlled by adjusting the oxygen flow rates, which can broaden the bandgap and regulate the localized surface plasmon resonance to balanced Tlum and ΔTsol. The propound surface engineering approaches symbolize a facile and cost-effective strategy to improve thermochromic characteristics, which could facilitate the deployment of VO2 film in smart windows and windshields of vehicles.

Abstract:The thermo-optic effect and infrared optical properties of VO2 nanoparticles were studied to obtain an optical material with special property that can be used in smart windows. The reflectance and transmittance spectra of the VO2 nanoparticles with different duty cycles at different temperatures were simulated with a specific dispersion relation. Vanadium metal nanoparticles were deposited on glass substrate by magnetic reactive sputtering with porous alumina template (MO) mask, and the VO2 nanoparticles were prepared by thermal oxidation. The nanostructure and optical properties of the VO2 nanoparticles were characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and spectrophotometry. The method of preparation of the sample is economical and the phase transition temperature is observed to drop to 43 degrees C. The transmission at 1700 nm exhibits a variation of 29% between the metallic and semiconducting states. The VO2 nanoparticles exhibit a significant thermochromic property. The transmittance of the VO2 nanoparticles is improved compared with the VO2 film. The decrease in phase transition temperature and the enhancement of optical properties demonstrate that VO2 film in nanoparticle structure is a viable candidate material for smart windows. Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) with reversible metal-insulator transition (MIT) is a promising energy-saving material for next-generation smart windows and infrared devices. However, the specific applications are largely limited by the relatively high critical temperature as well as the non-transferable grown-substrate. Herein, we report such limitations can be overcome by directly growing VO2 on layered mica sheets and integrating with high transparent single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) films. The SWNTs/VO2/mica hierarchical films can be peeled-off to form a free-standing ultra-thin optical window and can further be transferred to other substrates with high flexibility and transparency. By heating the SWNTs/VO2 layer with a bias current, the MIT process of VO2 film can be facilely modulated, achieving the reversible and dynamical regulation of the infrared transmission. Furthermore, by adjusting the bias current, it is possible to change the starting local temperature and shift the initial situation close to the “phase transition boundary”, resulting in the decreased energy barrier to trigger the MIT behavior. This fascinating strategy overcomes the high critical temperature limit of VO2 and avoids the bottle-neck problem in practical applications of VO2 material, which demonstrates wide applications of this kind of device in the future.

Abstract:VO2 has been intensively studied because of its metal-insulator transition. Based on the metal-insulator transition, smart thermochromic coating is made to regulate the solar transmittance of windows. In this paper, VO2(M) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by a mild annealing treatment of orthorhombic VOOH. The size, morphology, phase transition temperature and hysteresis of VO2(M) can be tailored by adjusting annealing conditions. It was found that the particle size and crystallinity play vital roles in determining the thermochromic performance of VO2(M) NPs films, and an optimal luminous transmittance Tlum of about 48.8% and a solar regulation efficiency ΔTsol of about 14.9% can be achieved. The mild annealing conditions and controllable transformation from VOOH to VO2(M) provide a new way to regulate the size and morphology of VO2(M) NPs, which is essential in studying the nature of phase transition and improving the thermochromic performance.
A low-temperature synthesis of strongly thermochromic W and Sr co-doped VO2 films with a low transition temperature

Abstract:The reversible semiconductor-to-metal transition of vanadium dioxide (VO2) makes VO2-based coatings a promising candidate for thermochromic smart windows, reducing the energy consumption of buildings. We report low-temperature (320 degC) depositions of thermochromic V1-x-yWxSryO2 films with a thickness of 71-73 nm onto 170-175 nm thick Y-stabilized ZrO2 layers on a 1 mm thick conventional soda-lime glass. The developed deposition technique is based on reactive high-power impulse magnetron sputtering with a pulsed O2 flow feedback control allowing us to prepare crystalline W and Sr co-doped VO2 films of the required stoichiometry without any substrate bias or post-deposition annealing. The W doping of VO2 decreases the transition temperature below 25 degC, while the Sr doping of VO2 increases the integral luminous transmittance, Tlum, significantly due to widening of the visible-range optical band gap, which is consistent with lowering of the absorption coefficient of films. We present the discussion of the effect of the Sr content in the metal sublattice of VO2 on the electronic and crystal structure of V1-x-yWxSryO2 films, and on their temperature-dependent optical and electrical properties. An optimized V0.855W0.018Sr0.127O2 film exhibits a high Tlum = 56.8% and modulation of the solar energy transmittance deltaTsol = 8.3%, which are 1.50 times and 1.28 times, respectively, higher compared with those of the V0.984W0.016O2 film. The achieved results constitute an important step toward a low-temperature synthesis of large-area thermochromic VO2-based coatings for future smart-window applications, as it is easy to further increase the Tlum and deltaTsol by >6% and >3%, respectively, using a 280 nm thick top SiO2 antireflection layer.

Abstract:As a promising thermochromic material for smart windows, VO 2 -based films have received extensive attention. To enhance the luminous transmittance ( T lum ) of thermochromic smart windows without seriously affecting the solar modulation efficiency (Δ T sol ), this paper prepared VO 2 films by rapid thermal annealing of sputtered vanadium thin films on an ordered SiO 2 nanosphere array, and then the ITO as antireflection layer was deposited on VO 2 film by reactive magnetron sputtering. The surface morphology, crystal structure and optical transmittance of the films were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and UV–VIS–NIR spectrophotometer, respectively. The SiO 2 nanospheres provide continuous refractive index gradient, while the deposition of the ITO antireflection layer creates conditions for thin film interference, thereby synergistically reducing surface reflection in the VO 2 -based smart window. Compared with the planar VO 2 thin film ( T lum , 39.1%), the ITO/VO 2 /SiO 2 composite structure can significantly increase the T lum from 39.1 to 55.5%, an increase of nearly 16.4%, while the Δ T sol is basically unchanged. The results provide an effective strategy for improving the performance of smart windows.

Abstract:Thermochromic coatings hold promise in reducing building energy consumption by dynamically regulating the heat gain of windows, which are often regarded as less energy-efficient components, across different seasons. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) stands out as a versatile thermochromic material for smart windows owing to its reversible metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) alongside correlated structural and optical properties. In this review, we delve into recent advancements in the phase-change VO2-based thermochromic coatings for smart windows, spanning from the macroscopic crystal level to the microscopic structural level (including elemental doping and micro/nano-engineering), as well as advances in controllable fabrication. It is notable that hybridizing functional elements/materials (e.g., W, Mo/SiO2, TiN) with VO2 in delicate structural designs (e.g., core-shell, optical cavity) brings new degrees of freedom for controlling the thermochromic properties, including the MIT temperature, luminous transmittance, solar-energy modulation ability and building-relevant multi-functionality. Additionally, we provide an overview of alternative chromogenic materials that could potentially complement or surpass the intrinsic limitations of VO2. By examining the landscape of emerging materials, we aim to broaden the scope of possibilities for smart window technologies. We also offer insights into the current challenges and prospects of VO2-based thermochromic smart windows, presenting a roadmap for advancing this field towards enhanced energy efficiency and sustainable building design. In summary, this review innovatively categorizes doping strategies and corresponding effects of VO2, underscores their crucial NIR-energy modulation ability for smart windows, pioneers a theoretical analysis of inverse core-shell structures, prioritizes practical engineering strategies for solar modulation in VO2 films, and summarizes complementary chromogenic materials, thus ultimately advancing VO2-based smart window technologies with a fresh perspective.
