Abstract:Due to rapid population and economic growth in recent years, the Wujiang River has been heavily impacted by anthropogenic activities. Of particular concern is the increase in SO 4 2- concentration of the river water from various anthropogenic sources. The results showed that the major cations of groundwater and surface water were Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ (>70% of the cation concentration), and the main anions were HCO 3- and SO 4 2- (>85% of the anion concentration). In groundwater, the contributions of carbonate dissolution to Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ by sulfuric acid ranged from 20.6% to 92.9% (average 51.5%); and to HCO 3- from 11.5% to 86.7% (average 36.9%). In the surface water, the contributions of carbonate dissolution to Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ ranged from 56.1% to 94.6% (average 76.9%); and to HCO3from 39.0% to 89.7% (average 64.2%). Our results demonstrate that besides carbonic acid, sulfuric acid also plays an important role on carbonate rock weathering, and influences the hydrochemistry of both groundwater and surface water in the Wujiang River drainage.

Abstract:To better understand the mechanisms that hydrological conditions control chemical weathering and carbon dynamics in the large rivers, we investigated hydrochemistry and carbon isotopic compositions of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) based on high-frequency sampling in the Wujiang River draining the carbonate area in southwestern China. Concentrations of major dissolved solute do not strictly follow the dilution process with increasing discharge, and biogeochemical processes lead to variability in the concentration-discharge relationships. Temporal variations of dissolved solutes are closely related to weathering characteristics and hydrological conditions in the rainy seasons. The concentrations of dissolved carbon and the carbon isotopic compositions vary with discharge changes, suggesting that hydrological conditions and biogeochemical processes control dissolved carbon dynamics. Biological CO2 discharge and intense carbonate weathering by soil CO2 should be responsible for the carbon variability under various hydrological conditions during the high-flow season. The concentration of DICbio (DIC from biological sources) derived from a mixing model increases with increasing discharge, indicating that DICbio influx is the main driver of the chemostatic behaviors of riverine DIC in this typical karst river. The study highlights the sensitivity of chemical weathering and carbon dynamics to hydrological conditions in the riverine system.

Identification of dissolved sulfate sources and the role of sulfuric acid in carbonate weathering using δ13CDIC and δ34S in karst area, northern China

Abstract:Karst groundwater is one of the most important water resources for agriculture and industry in Fenyang City of Shanxi province, northern China. In the last few decades, excessive exploitation of groundwater and other human activities have caused serious environmental problems in this area. Hence, it is essential to identify the resources of pollutants that deteriorate the water quality in the area. A total of 16 water samples were collected to assess the hydrochemical characteristics from wells and springs in bare karst area, northern Fenyang and covered karst region, south of the city. The chemical composition of groundwater was characterized by a dominance of Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3−, and SO42−, which accounted for more than 85 % of the total ion concentrations, indicating that limestone dissolution by weathering controls water chemical composition. SO42− in the groundwater showed high positive significant correlation with HCO3− and δ13CDIC, showing that carbonate dissolution by sulfuric acid has important contribution to groundwater chemical composition and δ13CDIC value. The relationship between δ34S and 1/SO42− revealed that the sources of SO42− are different in various types of groundwater. In the bare karst area, SO42− in springs mainly came from atmospheric precipitation, while in the shallow wells it mainly came from human activities; in the covered karst region, SO42− in quaternary pores water was mainly from anthropogenic inputs, while in the deep wells it was mainly from gypsum dissolution; in gypsum mine water, SO42+ was mainly from gypsum dissolution. Comparing with the bare karst area, human activities have significantly changed the chemical composition of groundwater in the covered karst region. Therefore, more control policies and measures should be formulated and applied to protect the covered karst region in the future.

Temporal Variations of Water Chemistry in the Wet Season in a Typical Urban Karst Groundwater System in Southwest China

Abstract:It is important to investigate temporal variations of water chemistry for the purpose of improving water quality in karst groundwater systems. Groundwater samples were collected daily under various land uses of Guiyang. Major ions and stable carbon isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC) were analyzed to understand the biogeochemical processes. The water chemistry was dominated by Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, and SO42-, which mainly derived from the dissolution of carbonate rocks (limestone and dolomite) and oxidation of sulfide. The groundwater was defined as of the HCO3-Ca Mg and HCO3·SO4-Ca·Mg type, according to its hydrochemical characteristics. Results suggested that hydrochemical concentrations changed quickly, in response to rainfall events. The fast response revealed that karst groundwater was easily impacted by rainfall and anthropogenic inputs according to temporal variation of water chemistry. The distribution of DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) and δ13CDIC showed that DIC is mainly sourced from soil CO2(g) influx and carbonate dissolution. δ13CDIC and major ions ratios suggested that carbonate minerals were dissolved by H2SO4 at groundwater in wooded area, contributing an important source for DIC due to the slight enrichment of heavy δ13CDIC. More negative δ13CDIC values were observed after rainfall reflected the fact that soil CO2(g) and organic carbon oxidation influxes accounted for a large share during DIC formation. Various δ13CDIC and hydrochemical patterns were observed under various land use and human activity conditions. Meanwhile, relative high nitrate loads were found in groundwater after rainfall, suggesting high anthropogenic inputs following rainwater as having side effects on water quality. This study suggests that water chemistry and isotopic proof provide a better understanding of water quality and carbon dynamics responding to rainfall events in the karst groundwater systems.

The contribution of human activities to dissolved inorganic carbon fluxes in a karst underground river system: evidence from major elements and δ¹³C(DIC) in Nandong, Southwest China

Abstract:Generally, the DIC in karst groundwater is dominantly derived from carbonate dissolution by carbonic acid. However, recently increases in the inorganic carbon flux have been linked to human activities, which nitric and sulfuric acids may contribute to carbonate dissolution. In order to quantify the sources and fluxes of DIC, and evaluate the carbon isotopic evolution of groundwater in Southwest China, the carbonate dissolution by carbonic, sulfuric and nitric acids was evaluated by hydrochemistry and δ¹³C(DIC)of groundwater. The results show that: (1) groundwater collected from residential and agricultural areas, showed higher DIC concentrations and δ¹³C(DIC) than those in groundwater collected from forested and grass land areas; (2) the contributions of carbonate dissolution by carbonic acid to total DIC concentrations in groundwater collected from forested and grass land areas averaged 99%; (3) the contributions of carbonate dissolution by carbonic acid to total DIC concentrations in groundwater, collected from residential and agricultural areas, varied from 40% to 77% with a mean percentage of 62%; (4) while the contributions of carbonate dissolution by sulfuric and nitric acids to total DIC concentrations in groundwater, collected from residential and agricultural areas, varied from 23% to 60% with a mean percentage of 38%; and (5) the δ¹³C(DIC) approaching a value of around -14‰, with a molar ratio between (Ca²⁺+Mg²⁺) and HCO₃⁻ of around 0.5 in groundwater, indicated that the carbonate was dissolved by soil CO₂ from C₃ vegetation under open system conditions. While the δ¹³C(DIC) varying from -5‰ to -11‰, with a variational molar ratio between (Ca²⁺+Mg²⁺) and HCO₃⁻ of 0.5 to 0.8 in groundwater, indicated that carbonate dissolution was controlled by soil CO₂ (from C₃ vegetation), HNO₃ and H₂SO₄. Also, this study indicated that the amount of soil or atmospheric CO₂ consumed during carbonate weathering should be critically evaluated when sulfuric or nitric acids are involved. Thus, not only the exports of inorganic carbon have been enhanced, but also the concentrations of nitrate and sulfate in karst groundwater have been elevated due to carbonate dissolution by sulfuric or nitric acid.

Abstract:The Qingjiang River is the second largest tributary of the Yangtze River in Hubei Province and is also a typical karst catchment. Eighty-two important groundwater samples were collected during the high and low water periods of 2019. The results show the following. (1) The major hydrochemical types are Ca + Mg-HCO 3 and Ca-HCO 3 , indicating that carbonate weathering is the main factor controlling the groundwater chemistry. (2) The results of inverse hydrochemical modeling reveal two kinds of groundwater–carbonate rock interactions. One is the codissolution of calcite and dolomite, and the other is dedolomitization, which is widespread in the dolomite aquifers. Furthermore, gypsum has a tendency to dissolve in each aquifer, and the common ion effect of Ca 2+ caused by gypsum dissolution promotes dedolomitization. The modeling results suggest that major elements can be effectively used to trace the material source of the groundwater. (3) The chemical weathering of carbonate rock is mainly affected by carbonic acid, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid. After accounting for the impacts of evaporites and atmospheric input, the calculations show that the contribution of carbonic acid involved in carbonate weathering is 70.9% in the high water period and 70.0% in the low water period. Statistical analysis of karst spring discharge and the contributions of the acids involved in carbonate weathering reveals that the two are positively related. This result reflects the behaviors of sulfuric acid and nitric acid under the hydrodynamic conditions in different seasons. Therefore, carbonate weathering should be carefully evaluated in karst areas with abundant groundwater, and the role of groundwater in carbonate weathering is worthy of further study.

Abstract:The generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) may accelerate watershed erosion and promote the migration of heavy metals, then threaten local ecosystems such as aquatic life and even human health. Previous studies have focused primarily on influence of AMD in surface environment. In order to reveal the acidizing processes in karst high-sulfur coalfield in Southwest China, this study, by contrast, focused on the hydrogeochemical evolution process and acidification mechanism of mine water in Zhijin coalfield, western Guizhou Province. The oxidation of pyrite and other sulfides induced strong acidification of mine water according to the water chemical analysis. As a result, a series of geochemical processes such as dissolution of carbonates and silicates, hydrolysis of metal ions, and degassing of CO2 complicated water chemical evolution. The dissolution of silicates controlled the chemical composition of mine water, but more carbonates might be dissolved during the acidification of mine water. The sources of sulfate are quite different in water samples collected from the two selected mine. According to sulfur isotope analysis, the dissolution of gypsum is the primary source of sulfate in samples from Hongfa mine, whereas sulfide oxidation contributed a large amount of sulfate to the mine water in Fenghuangshan mine. The dissolution of carbonates should be an important source of DIC in mine water and CO2 originating from organic mineralization might also have a certain contribution. This study elucidated the groundwater chemical evolution processes in high-sulfur coal-bearing strata and provided a foundation for further study of carbonates erosion and carbon emission during acidification of mine water.

Abstract:To determine the impact of natural factors and human activities on the hydrogeochemical evolution of karst groundwater, hydrochemical surveys were conducted in the Jinci spring area, north China. In the present work, a comprehensive method, including hydrochemistry, isotopes, statistical analysis and hydrochemical modeling, was applied to analyze the origin of karst groundwater, hydrochemical reactions, and the causes of SO 4 2− pollution. Isotopic characteristics ( 2 H and 18 O) suggest that karst groundwater is majorly replenished by precipitation infiltration and surface water leakage from the exposed carbonate rock areas. The hydrochemical facies evolve from HCO 3 -Ca and HCO 3 -Ca·Mg in the recharge area, to HCO 3 ·SO 4 -Ca·Mg and SO 4 ·HCO 3 -Ca·Mg in the transitional area, and SO 4 -Ca and SO 4 -Ca·Mg in the discharge area. Naturally, dissolution or precipitation of calcite, dolomite, gypsum and halite, as well as cation exchange predominate the hydrochemical evolution. Due to long-term coal mining activities, acid mine drainage mixed with karst groundwater, resulting in strong SO 4 2− contamination of groundwater in the spring area. According to 34 S isotope fractionation, SO 4 2− is mainly from gypsum dissolution (64%), followed by pyrite oxidation (36%). In addition, the mixing processes, rock–water interactions, cation exchange, and dedolomitization were identified and confirmed by hydrochemical modeling with PHREEQC program. The findings of this work are meaningful for groundwater sustainable utilization and contamination management.

Abstract:Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) holds significant importance within river systems, particularly in karst regions. The concentration of DIC is intricately linked to both biological processes, such as the respiration of organic matter, and geological processes, notably the strength of carbonate weathering. This dual influence exerts a profound impact on regional and global carbon cycles. However, the precise biological and geological origins of DIC in karst rivers remain a subject of debate. In this study, we delineate the sources of DIC in a typical karst catchment (Houzhai catchment) through isotopic analysis coupled with water chemistry examination. The results showed that δ 13 C DIC and Δ 14 C DIC variations range from −14.0 ‰ to −7.3 ‰ and − 426 ‰ to −31 ‰, respectively, with average values of −10.5 ‰ and − 180 ‰. Results derived from the isotopic mixing model suggest that approximately 83 % of DIC emanates from the soil CO 2 , while 17 % originates from carbonate sources. This indicates that biological processes exert a greater influence on DIC within the study area compared to geological processes. Seasonal variation, exemplified by higher DOC concentrations and Δ 14 C DIC values, alongside with lower DIC concentrations and δ 13 C DIC values during the wet season indicate increased input from biogenic sources, closely related to temperature and moisture conditions. Our study underscores an unbalanced contribution from biogenic and geogenic sources in karst rivers, highlighting potential inaccuracies in past carbon sink flux calculations. The roles of biogenic and geogenic sources in the carbon cycling of karst rivers, as well as their responses to future climate change, warrant a reevaluation.

[Effects of Land Use on Riverine Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and δ13CDIC in a Karst River Basin, Southwestern China]

Abstract:As an important part of the riverine carbon cycle, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) has attracted continuous attention. The stable carbon isotope (δ13CDIC) of DIC can reflect its sources and transformations. However, the effects of land use on DIC and δ13CDIC are rarely investigated. To study the influencing factors of DIC and δ13CDIC, river water samples were collected and analyzed from the Chishui River basin, a typical karst river basin in southwestern China. The upper reaches of the Chishui River basin were predominantly underlain by carbonate sedimentary rocks, whereas the lower reaches contained mostly siliciclastic sedimentary rocks, and the forest coverage in the lower reaches was relatively high. The elemental compositions of the river water revealed that the hydrochemistry of rivers in the upper reaches of the basin was mainly controlled by carbonate weathering, whereas the hydrochemistry of some tributaries in the lower reaches was mainly affected by silicate weathering. During the wet season, the average values of c (DIC) and the δ13CDIC value were (1940±493) μmol·L-1 and (-9±1) ‰, respectively, whereas the c (DIC) was relatively high, and the δ13CDIC value was more positive in the dry season, with the average values of (2334±626) μmol·L-1 and (-7.3±1) ‰, respectively. The DIC of most samples was mainly controlled by carbonate weathering under an open system and was derived from carbonate minerals and atmospheric and soil CO2. The seasonal variations in the c (DIC) and δ13CDIC values suggested that c (DIC) was regulated by climate, hydrology, and biology. The increasing contribution of biological carbon to DIC in summer was the main cause of the more negative δ13CDIC value in the wet season, whereas the dilution effect of higher discharge was the main cause of the low c (DIC) in the wet season. The samples from three tributaries in the lower reaches with the highest proportion of silicate and forest distribution had the highest dissolved organic carbon concentration[c (DOC)], the lowest c (DIC), and the most negative δ13CDIC value in the wet season. The proportion of carbonate distribution had positive correlations with c (DIC) in the wet and dry seasons, indicating that lithology was the main controlling factor of c (DIC). The rivers draining the carbonate areas had a lower c (DIC) and a more negative δ13CDIC value in the wet season than those in the dry season, whereas for the rivers draining non-carbonate areas with high forest coverage, the c (DIC) was higher and the δ13CDIC value was significantly more negative in the wet season than those in the dry season. This implies that c (DIC) and δ13CDIC are significantly affected by land use when they are less affected by lithology.
[Impact of Human Activities on Water-Rock Interactions in Surface Water of Lijiang River]

Abstract:The influence of human activities on karst surface water quality has received increasing attention. To explore the impact of human activities on water-rock interactions in karst surface water, water samples were collected from July to November in 2016 in the Lijiang River, which is dominated by human activities. The samples were analyzed for the hydrochemistryand the characteristics of δ13CDIC. The results show that:①The Lijiang River is mainly characterized by HCO3-Ca chemical composition.. The SO42- and NO3- concentrations are inferior to HCO3- concentrations in the anion composition; besides, the concentrations of SO42- and NO3- in the river between Guilin and Yangshuo are higher than in the other sampling sites, caused by tourism and urban development. ②Equivalent ratios of[Ca2++Mg2+]/[HCO3-] are between 1.01 and 1.51 and the equivalent ratios of[Ca2++Mg2+]/[SO42-+NO3-+HCO3-] are between 0.85 and 1.12, indicating that the sulfuric acid and nitric acid have participated in the water-rock interaction. ③The proportions of carbonic acid dissolving carbonate rocks range from 32.10%-98.01% with an average of 75.89%. The proportions of sulfuric acid and nitric acid dissolving carbonate rocks vary from 1.99%-67.90% with an average of 24.11%. The proportions of sulfuric acid and nitric acid dissolving carbonate rocks in the rainy period with an average of 24.31% is higher than in the brief rain period with an average of 23.88%. In addition, the proportions of sulfuric acid and nitric acid dissolving carbonate rocks present a fluctuated increasing trend from upstream to downstream and the maximum strength and the minimum strength of the sulfuric and nitric acid dissolving carbonate rocks occur in Lingchuan and Huajiang, respectively. ④ HCO3- mainly originated from the carbonate rocks dissolved by carbonic acid, with an average of 83.58%, followed by the carbonate rocks dissolved by sulfuric acid and nitric acid, with an average of 14.24%. The contribution of carbonic acid weathering silicate rocks is the smallest with an average of 2.18%. ⑤ δ13CDIC of the Lijiang River ranges from -11.95‰--7.61‰; the calculated δ13CDIC-rock using the mixture endmember model ranges from -14.24‰--7.23‰. δ13CDIC is close to δ13CDIC-rock in the rainy period and δ13CDIC is significantly higher than δ13CDIC-rock in the brief rain period. The difference between δ13CDIC and δ13CDIC-rock is caused by the influence of aquatic photosynthetic organisms.
The effects of weathering of coal-bearing stratum on the transport and transformation of DIC in karst watershed

Abstract:The mining of medium- to high‑sulfur coal in karst areas has led to serious acidification problems in surface water, thus encouraging a re-evaluation of DIC transformation and CO2 source-sink relationships in karst watersheds. The weathering of limestone and sulfide-rich coal measures jointly influence the pH of the Huatan River in karst areas in Southwest China, which is lower in the rainy season and higher in the dry season. Due to CO2 degassing, DIC concentration tends to decrease along the flow direction, while δ13C-DIC gradually becomes heavier. In general, DIC transformation in the Huatan River is controlled by AMD input, CO2 degassing, organic matter (OM) degradation, and the dissolution and precipitation balance of carbonate minerals in different seasons. In spring, the mineralization of OM from terrestrial and domestic sewage gradually enhances and replenishes DIC in the water. As the pH increases in this season, the capacity for buffering CO2 increases. Meanwhile, OM degradation generates a large amount of CO2 in summer, and carbonic acid begins to dissolve limestone. In autumn, the pH decreases due to the enhanced weathering of sulfide-rich coal measures and the mass input of AMD. Thus, the river shows the ability to drive CO2 outgassing. In winter, CO2 degassing gradually weakens, DIC concentration is at its lowest, and δ13C-DIC reaches the heaviest value.

Abstract:Background Understanding the responses of riverine dissolved carbon dynamics and chemical weathering processes to short-term climatic variabilities is important to understand the Surface-Earth processes under ongoing climate change. Temporal variations of solutes and stable carbon isotope of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ 13 C DIC ) were analysed during a hydrological year in the Guijiang River, South China. We aimed to unravel the chemical weathering processes and carbon dynamics in karst areas under ongoing climate changes. Results Significant positive relationships were found between weathering rates and climatic factors (i.e. temperature and discharge) over the hydrological year. The total flux of CO 2 consumption (760.4 × 10 3 mol/km 2 /year) in the Guijiang River was much higher than the global mean flux, with a higher CO 2 consumption capacity in the Guijiang River relative to most other global rivers. Chemical weathering fluxes in this karst area showed high sensitivity to global climate change. CO 2 evasion during the warm–wet seasons was much lower than those during cold–dry seasons. Light δ 13 C DIC values occurred under high-flow conditions, corresponding with the high temperatures in high-flow seasons. IsoSource modelling revealed that biological carbon could account for 53% of all dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), controlling the temporal carbon variabilities. Conclusion This study quantitatively evaluated the temporal variations in CO 2 fluxes and carbon cycling of karstic river systems and demonstrated that riverine carbon cycling will have a higher sensibility to ongoing global climate change. High discharges accelerate solutes transport, with relatively large quantities of 13 C-depleted carbon being flushed into rivers. Meanwhile, high temperatures also accelerate organic carbon mineralisation, producing high content of soil CO 2 , whose influx can shift the 13 C-depleted values in the high-flow seasons. Taken together, biological carbon influx should be responsible for the temporal carbon dynamics.

Abstract:To assess the prevalence of physical and/or mental disability in Salvador, Bahia, 485 favela (shantytown) dwellers and 753 non-favela dwellers, age 7 and older, were studied in October 1985. Some 77.3% of the favela dwellers were either illiterate or had incomplete primary schooling, while 77.2% of the non-favela dwellers had completed high school or college. The total prevalence of disability, adjusted by age, was 8% for favela dwellers and 2.5% for non-favela dwellers. The prevalence of physical disability was 6.2% among favela dwellers and 1.9% among non-favela dwellers; mental disability occurred among 1.8% of favela dwellers and 0.7% of non-favela dwellers. Prevalence of disability in the favela group was higher among men than women (ratio of 4.4); there was no difference between sexes in the group of non-favela dwellers (ratio of 1.1). Locomotor impairment was the most prevalent, followed by mental and sensory disabilities. The authors discussed the need for more detailed studies on disability, including aspects related to availability of and access to medical care and rehabilitation.

Abstract:Carbonate minerals are the largest carbon (C) reservoir on earth. Quantitative assessment of carbonate weathering and CO2 sink flux caused by anthropogenic acids in karst wetland regions is imperative to improve understanding of the hydrogeochemical evolution and global C cycle in karst ecosystem. In this study, a typical field observation was conducted in the Huixian karst wetland (HKW) in South China. The hydrogeochemical and isotopic (δ15N-NO3 –, δ18O-NO3 –, and δ13CDIC) analyses combined with the MixSIAR model and stoichiometric coefficients were used to quantitatively estimate the influence of H2CO3, HNO3 and H2SO4 on carbonate weathering and CO2 sink flux. The results obtained showed that anthropogenic HNO3 and H2SO4 affect carbonate weathering in the HKW, evidenced by the significant correlations between hydrogeochemical parameters and δ13CDIC value. The quantitative results showed high contributions of HNO3 and H2SO4 to carbonate weathering in karst groundwater, with contribution ratio values of 20.91 ± 19.29 and 21.69 ± 26.88%, respectively. Besides karst water over-exploitation, this finding suggested that these anthropogenic acids were also an important cause of a decrease in ecological water levels, resulting in the shortage of karst water resource and degradation of wetland ecosystem. Moreover, the involvement of anthropogenic acids in the natural chemical weathering has significantly decreased the CO2 sink flux by 11.23 ± 7.94 and 41.60 ± 30.24% for surface water and groundwater, respectively, thereby potentially affecting the karst C cycle and global climate change. This present study provided an integrated quantitative approach for estimating the influence of H2CO3, HNO3, and H2SO4 on carbonate weathering and CO2 sink in karst wetland regions. Our study highlighted that the effects of anthropogenic acids on carbonate weathering need to be considered in future studies on the restoration of wetland ecosystems, particularly in intensive agricultural study areas.

Abstract:In order to understand the inorganic carbon cycle of the groundwater-fed reservoir in karst area, Dalongdong Reservoir, which is located at Shanglin County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, was investigated from 12th to 20th July, 2014. Concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), delta13C of DIC (delta13C(DIC)), partial CO2 pressure (pCO2) and CO2 flux across water-air interface were studied by observation in situ and high-resolution diel monitoring. Results show that: (1) DIC concentration and water pCO2 increased from upstream area to downstream area [DIC(average)): from 122.88 to 172.02 mg x L(-1), pCO2(average) : from 637.91 x 10(-6) to 1399.97 x 10(-6)], while delta13C(DIC) decreased from upstream area to downstream area [delta13C(DIC(average): from -4.34% per hundred to -6.97% per hundred] in the reservoir. (2) CO2 efflux across water-air interface varied from 7.11 to 335.54 mg x (m2 x h)(-1) with mean of 125.03 mg x (m2 x h)(-1) in Dalongdong reservoir surface-layer waters, which was the source of atmospheric CO2. CO2 effluxes across water-air interface in upstream area [mean 131.73 mg x (m2 x h)(-1)] and downstream area [mean 170.25 mg x (m2 x h)(-1)] were higher than that in middle area [mean 116.05 mg x (m2 x h))(-1)] in the reservoir. (3) Water pCO2 and CO2 efflux across water-air interface showed similar characteristics of diel variations, which decreased in daylight and increased in night and showed a negative correlation with chlorophyll a (Chla). Possible reasons of research results are found as follows: (1) DIC concentration, water pCO2 and delta13C(DIC) are influenced by biomass of phytoplankton, turbidity, conductivity, the depth of water and transparency, while CO2 efflux across water-air interface is controlled by both of biomass of phytoplankton and wind speed. (2) Photosynthesis, respiration and vertical motion of phytoplankton possibly affect diel variations of DIC cycle in the groundwater-fed reservoir in karst area.

Abstract:Sulfide oxidation, coupled with carbonate weathering is thought to be a source of CO 2 over geological timescales to offset CO 2 drawdown from silicate weathering. Its impact on the carbon budget of weathering at the catchment scale is generally constrained by utilizing riverine water chemistry and the isotope value (δ 34 S) of sulfate. However, the multiple origins of riverine sulfate and the high variability of sulfide-derived δ 34 S certainly limit the determination of sulfate sources and thus our understanding of the role of sulfuric acid-induced weathering in the carbon budget. In this study, to quantify the carbon budget between weathering by carbonic and sulfuric acids in mountainous catchments (the Yinjiang River, the Shiqian River, and the Yuqing River) in southwest China, a Monte Carlo inversion model is employed for major element concentrations and sulfate δ 34 S (δ 34 S SO4 ). This inversion quantitatively partitions the cations and sulfate between different sources, and further identifies the pyrite-derived δ 34 S and the flux ratios of alkalinity to dissolved inorganic carbon (ΔALK/ΔDIC). Inversion results reveal that the majority of major cations (>90%) is derived from carbonate (calcite and dolomite) dissolution, and that riverine sulfate budget is predominately contributed by pyrite oxidation and precipitation. In the Yinjiang River, the average δ 34 S SO4 is 8.4‰ in the upper and middle reaches, but declines significantly to 0.4‰ in the lower reaches. In the Shiqian River and Yuqing River, δ 34 S SO4 mainly cluster around 3.6∼5.7‰ and 5.5∼8.5‰, respectively. Inversion results suggest that the primary controls on δ 34 S SO4 are the variability of lithology and the variation in the proportional contribution of pyrite oxidation to riverine sulfate. In the Yinjiang River, the fraction of H 2 SO 4 -driven weathering is highly variable, and higher in the lower reaches than in the upper reaches, attributing to distinct underlying lithology in the catchment (a widespread distribution of coal-bearing strata). The weathering fluxes with 1<ΔALK/ΔDIC 5–10 kyr and <10 Myr), indicating that weathering in these catchments acts as short-term sinks of atmospheric CO 2 but long-term sources of it. Moreover, reanalysis of prior datasets of karst-dominated catchments in China also highlight the important role of pyrite oxidation and acid precipitation in the carbon budget.
