Abstract:A stabilized diesel-methanol blend was realized and a study on the performance and emissions of the diesel-methanol blend was carried out in a compression ignition engine. The study showed that the engine thermal efficiency increases and the diesel equivalent b.s.f.c. decreases with increase in the oxygen mass fraction (or methanol mass fraction) of the diesel-methanol blends due to an increased fraction of premixed combustion phase, oxygen enrichment and improvement in the diffusive combustion phase. Further increase in the fuel delivery advance angle will achieve a better engine thermal efficiency when the diesel engine is operated using the diesel-methanol fuel blends. A marked reduction in the exhaust CO and smoke can be achieved when operating with the diesel-methanol blend. There is not a large variation in the exhaust hydrocarbon with the addition of methanol in diesel fuel. NOx increases with increase in the mass of methanol added; methanol addition to diesel fuel was found to have a strong influence on the NOx concentration at high engine loads rather than at low engine loads, and a flat NOx-smoke trade-off curve exists when operating with the diesel-methanol fuel blends.

Abstract:Diesel engines are inevitable parts of our daily life and will be in the future. Expensive after-treatment technologies to fulfil normative legislations about the harmful tail-pipe emissions and fuel price increase in recent years created expectations from researchers for alternative fuel applications on diesel engines. This study investigates hydrogen as additive fuel in diesel engines. Hydrogen was introduced into intake manifold using gas injectors as additive fuel in gaseous form and also diesel fuel was injected into cylinder by diesel injector and used as igniter. Energy content of introduced hydrogen was set to 0%, 25% and 50% of total fuel energy, where the 0% references neat diesel operation without hydrogen injection. Test conditions were set to full load at 750, 900, 1100, 1400, 1750 and finally 2100 r/min engine speed. Variation in engine performance, emissions and combustion characteristics with hydrogen addition was investigated. Hydrogen introduction into the engine by 25% and 50% of total charge energy reveals significant decrease in smoke emissions while dramatic increase in nitrogen oxides. With increasing hydrogen content, a slight rise is observed in total unburned hydrocarbons although CO 2 and CO gaseous emissions reduced considerably. Maximum in-cylinder gas pressure and rate of heat release peak values raised with hydrogen fraction.

Abstract:This study investigates the performance and emission characteristics of biodiesel blends of rapeseed oil and waste cooking oil in a toroidal re-entrant combustion chamber (TCC) compression ignition engine. Hydrogen was allowed into the engine in dual fuel mode to enhance the engine performance. The presence of oxygen in the biodiesel and hydrogen induction increased the peak pressure and heat release rate significantly for all the engine loads. At a peak load of 4.88 kW, the maximum brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of 31.77% was recorded for the D70R20W10 (diesel 70%, rapeseed oil 20%, waste cooking oil 10%) biodiesel blend. Furthermore, hydrogen induction enhanced the BTE by around 3%. The biodiesel blending substantially lowered the emissions of unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and smoke opacity. Additionally, hydrogen supplementation facilitated 5–10% carbon monoxide reduction over biodiesel blends by enabling more complete oxidation. However, higher temperatures generated due to complete combustion resulted in more NO x formation. Thus, the authors propose that biodiesel blends of rapeseed oil, waste cooking oil, and diesel with hydrogen induction improve engine performance and reduce regulated emissions.

Abstract:Bioenergy and exploitation from waste offer an appealing alternate method for minimizing the severity of environmental risks while compensating for fossil fuel needs. In detail, this research examined the process of transesterifying waste seed oil obtained from the Kabra plant to fuel a common rail direct injection diesel engine. The oxygenated additive dimethyl carbonate was used as an ignition enhancer. The experiments were performed by blending dimethyl carbonate (up to 20%) in the biodiesel blend to analyze the engine outcome parameters in standard operational procedures. The experiment results revealed that the maximum cylinder pressure in pure biodiesel was 1.73% greater than diesel. More dimethyl carbonate in the biodiesel blend produced a 20.54% higher heat release rate than diesel. The brake thermal brake efficiency improved by 17.75% in dimethyl carbonate 20% blend than pure biodiesel at a higher load. The higher proportion of dimethyl carbonate blend increased 4.2% oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. It decreased 31.5% smoke opacity, 36.36% hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, and 35.6% carbon monoxide (CO) emissions than diesel at maximum load. This research concluded that the smoke opacity, CO emissions, and HC emissions persisted lower for all the test fuels than baseline diesel fuel, with a slight rise in NOx emissions. Further, the TOPSIS optimization technique found that the dimethyl carbonate 20% blend is suitable for diesel engine operation. Hence, the fuel generated from Kabra biodiesel was a feasible diesel substitute in this investigation.

Abstract:The introduction of hydrogen into the engine could enhance its combustion efficiency and emission characteristics. The current study examines the attributes of compression ignition (CI) engines by introducing hydrogen into a biodiesel blend derived from algae. The improved thermal properties of hydrogen, when combined with algae biodiesel, significantly affect the performance, combustion, and emissions of dual-fuel engines. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of hydrogen enrichment levels of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the nozzle volume on a biodiesel blend fuel. In comparison to diesel, algal biodiesel reduces emissions of unburned hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxygen (O2) by 5.19%, 3.61%, and 2.83%, respectively, while increasing nitrogen oxide (NO) emissions by 4.73%. In contrast to biodiesel, diesel demonstrated superior brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and lower specific energy consumption (SEC). Injecting hydrogen into A20 blend fuel at volumes of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% results in a respective increase in brake thermal efficiency of 2.65%, 2.97%, 3.50%, and 4.15%. The addition of hydrogen gas to biodiesel blends further enhances their combustion qualities, leading to elevated peak cylinder pressure, temperature, and heat release rate. The results indicate that A20H5, A20H10, A20H15, and A20H20 fuel reduced CO emissions by 3.75%, 8.75%, 12.5%, and 16.25%, respectively, compared to the A20 blend. In the same vein, HC emissions decreased by 5.76%, 10.29%, 15.52%, and 18.98%, respectively, as compared to A20 fuel. However, NO emissions rose by 5.36%, 10.20%, 15.28%, and 23.23%, respectively, for A20H5, A20H10, A20H15, and A20H20 test fuels. Ultimately, the utilization of algal biodiesel and hydrogen enrichment in diesel engines was proven to substantially reduce pollutants while increasing efficiency. This study contributes valuable insights into the intersection of renewable fuels, hydrogen enrichment, and engine technology, with the potential to drive significant advancements in sustainable transportation and environmental conservation.

Abstract:The main aim of the present work is to investigate the influence of hydrogen injection timing and injection duration on the combustion and emissions of a CI engine functioning on dual fuel (DF) mode by employing diesel/dairy scum oil methyl ester (DiSOME)/Waste frying oil methyl ester (WFOME) - producer gas (PG) combination. Hydrogen flow rate was maintained constant (8 lpm) and injected in air-producer gas (PG) mixture an inlet manifold using a gas injector. In this current work, injection timing was varied from TDC to 15 deg., aTDC in steps of 5. Similarly, injection duration was adopted from 30 deg., CA to 90 deg., CA and differed in steps of 30. From the outcome of work, it is noticed that the best possible injection timing and injection duration were found to be 10 deg., aTDC and 60 deg., CA respectively. Results showed that, at optimum injection parameters, diesel-PG combination with hydrogen resulted in augmented BTE by 6.7% and 12.4%, decreased smoke by 26.04% and 36.4%, decreased HC by 16.6% and 22.4%, decreased CO by 23.5% and 29.6% and increased NOx by 12.4% and 22.1%, compared to DiSOME and WFOME supported DF operation. Investigation with DiSOME-hydrogen enriched PG combustion showed satisfactory operation.

Abstract:Alternative fuel resources are currently gaining popularity as a potential solution to the challenges caused by a shortage of petroleum fuels and the associated increase in environmental pollution. Hydrogen (H 2 ) as an alternative fuel source is getting a lot of attention. The motivation of this research was to examine how the fuel injection parameters (FIP) and H 2 enrichment influence CI engine features when blended with Ceiba pentandra biodiesel. Based on the findings of prior research work, a 20% biodiesel blend (B20) and optimal FIP of 260 bar and 27° BTDC were selected for this trial, along with 10 lpm of H 2 enrichment. As compared to diesel at standard FIP, the synergistic action of B20 with H 2 enrichment and optimum FIP achieved the goal of improving performance and combustion, leading to increased brake thermal efficiency (10%), cylinder pressure (5%), and heat release rate (7.4%) while reducing brake-specific fuel consumption (9%) and emitting lesser emissions of hydrocarbon (16%), carbon monoxide (12%), and smoke (18%) emissions than diesel, except Nitrogen oxides. Therefore, combining these two strategies of optimum FIP and H 2 enrichment with novel Ceiba pentandra biodiesel blend opens the door to a healthier ecosystem with superior combustion and lesser emission.

Abstract:The study was conducted to uncover the emission, combustion, and performance features of the blend of Water Hyacinth biodiesel and Mesua Ferrea seed oil biodiesel with Hydrogen addition on a diesel engine in dual fuel. Pilot fuel is a blend of 50% Water Hyacinth biodiesel and 50% Mesua Ferrea seed oil biodiesel. A single-cylinder compression ignition engine was modified to operate on dual fuel mode with hydrogen. Variations of engine operating parameters such as injection timing, and engine load were performed. The study was conducted with three pilot fuel injection timings (23, 26, and 29°bTDC) and variable engine loadings (20%–100% with an increment of 20%) at an injection pressure of 200 bar and compression ratio of 18. The results indicated that the maximum brake thermal efficiency of 28.11% and a replacement of liquid fuel by 85% was obtained for the WHMF blend powered dual fuel diesel engine at pilot fuel injection timings of 26°bTDC at 100% load. HC, CO, and smoke emissions are reduced with hydrogen due to faster combustion. On the other hand, there was a slight increase in NOx emissions noticed with hydrogen enrichment.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a renewable fuel with excellent combustion characteristics. However, the direct use of hydrogen in existing engines faces obstacles such as abnormal combustion and high NOx emissions. This study proposes a strategy for controlling the combustion and emissions performance of a port-injection (PI) hydrogen internal combustion engine using ethanol direct injection (DI). The test conditions are 1000 rpm, 1500 rpm, and 2000 rpm respectively, the excess air coefficient is 1, 1.5, and 2, and 3%, 6%, and 9% ethanol is added. The results showed that the addition of ethanol can significantly reduce the pressure rise rate of the hydrogen engine and prolong CA0-10 and CA10-90. The addition of ethanol can promote the BMEP and BTE of the hydrogen engine. The addition of ethanol can reduce NOx emissions under lean burn conditions by 18%. The disadvantage is that the addition of ethanol increases the hydrocarbon emissions of hydrogen engines by about 50%, but the total amount is less. After the addition of ethanol, the flashback phenomenon of the hydrogen engine was significantly improved.

Abstract:Diesel engines are employed as the major propulsion power source because of their simple, rigid structure and high-fuel economy. It is expected that diesel engines will be widely used in the foreseeable future. However, the increase in usage of diesel engines causes the shortage of fossil fuel and a greater degree of bad pollution. To regulate the above, identifying an alternate fuel to the diesel engine with less pollution is essential. In this research work, emulsified fuels were prepared with different ratios based on the diesel-ethanol blending. The experiment was conducted in a single cylinder diesel engine. Emulsified diesel fuels of 10, 20, 30 and 40 ethanol/diesel ratios by volume were used in the engine, which was run at constant speed of 1500 rpm. The result shows a marginal increase in brake thermal efficiency, exhaust gas temperature, specific fuel consumption and also reduction of smoke density. The oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter seem to increase slightly, when compared to the neat fuel.

Abstract:The effect of graphene oxide nanoparticles (50 ppm) and hydrogen enrichment on the Nerium oleander methyl ester-diesel blend is investigated in the present research study using a compression ignition engine in a dual-fuel mode. Biodiesel is derived from Nerium oleander oil, and 20% (v/v) is blended with 80% of diesel fuel. Following that, Novel carbon-based additives are dispersed in biodiesel–diesel blend and supplied as a piloted fuel. On the other hand, the variable volume flow rates (5 and 10 lpm) of hydrogen gas are supplied via the intake manifold as a secondary fuel. The effects of piloted fuel blends and secondary hydrogen fuel enrichment on overall combustion, performance, and emissions are explored by investigating the cylinder pressure, net and cumulative heat release rate brake thermal efficiency, brake-specific fuel consumption, exhaust gas temperature, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, and smoke emissions. Combustion parameters, including cylinder pressure, net heat release rate, cumulative heat release rate, are improved by 16, 9.02, and 12.84%, respectively, for B20 + GO + 10H 2 blend at maximum engine power when compared to biodiesel–diesel blend. The blend B20 + GO + 10H 2 increases the brake thermal efficiency by 12.35% and decreases brake-specific fuel consumption by 15.15% at a maximum power output when compared to the biodiesel–diesel blend. The synergistic effect of B20 + GO + 10H 2 decreases carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and smoke opacity emissions by 24.51, 27.04, and 7.5%, respectively, at a higher power output when compared to diesel. However, the carbon dioxide and formation of nitrogen oxide increased by 9.57 and 11.98% at a higher power output as compared to diesel. This is owing to the rapid flame speed of hydrogen, as well as the enhanced thermal conductivity and catalytic activity of a biodiesel–diesel blend, including graphene oxide nano-additions.

Abstract:In the contemporary world, driven by escalating industrialization and motorization, there has been a rapid surge in the demand for petroleum and its derivatives. Recognizing the sharp and continuous decline in fossil fuel resources over the past few decades, there has been a growing realization of the necessity for alternative fuels in internal combustion engines worldwide. With the undue exploitation and the consequent depletion of fossil fuel resources, the usage of biodiesel fuels for internal combustion engines has catapulted to higher levels. This research investigates a blend of 20% cottonseed oil (CSO), hydrogen and diesel as a renewable, sustainable alternative fuel for compression ignition engines. The study evaluates the impact of injection opening pressures (IOP) and hydrogen at flow rates of 5, 10, 15 and 20 L per minute (lpm) on combustion, emission characteristics and engine performance. Experiments were conducted on a single-cylinder, four-stroke, 4.5 kW diesel engine with water cooling and eddy current loading, at a compression ratio of 18.5 and a rated speed of 1800 rpm. The IOP settings were 200, 220 and 240 bar. Results indicated improvements in brake thermal efficiency and reductions in brake-specific fuel consumption and emissions of hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO), though there was a slight increase in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. The in-cylinder pressure and net heat release rate (NHRR) were highest with B20. The mass fraction burned for B20 with 15 lpm hydrogen was earlier compared with B20 alone, with minimal HC and CO emissions for B20 with 15 lpm hydrogen substitution. The optimal configuration was found to be an IOP of 220 bars with 15 lpm hydrogen in B20 dual-fuel mode, despite higher exhaust emissions.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Ahead of Print. Various types of alternative fuels and their additives have undergone extensive investigation to analyze their effects on diesel engine performance. The aim of this study is to comprehensively evaluate the effects on performance and sustainability while employing blends of palm oil biodiesel and diesel, together with the introduction of oxyhydrogen (HHO) gas, in a diesel engine. The objectives include evaluating energy, exergy and sustainability parameters in order to ascertain the effectiveness of certain fuel mixtures. The study examined five different fuel mixtures: PB0, PB10, PB20, PB10HHO and PB20HHO. The HHO gas was injected into the cylinder alongside the air at a flow rate of 0.3 LPM. The primary results indicate significant enhancements in energy and exergy efficiency when HHO gas is used in conjunction with palm oil biodiesel, resulting in gains of up to 1.52% and 1.43%, respectively, compared to using biodiesel blends alone. In addition, the introduction of HHO gas resulted in a drop of up to 4.58% in brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC). The use of biodiesel blends in conjunction with HHO gas led to a noteworthy decrease of up to 11.4% in carbon dioxide (CO2) and 5.7% in hydrocarbon (HC) emissions. Nevertheless, there was a notable rise of up to 9.56% in nitric oxide (NO) emissions. With the HHO-supplied condition, the combination was shown to have up to a 2.05% better sustainability index. The PB10HHO and PB20HHO blends provide improved performance when compared to pure biodiesel blends and conventional diesel. This study offers a unique approach to increasing diesel engine performance through the synergistic usage of biodiesel blends and HHO gas.

Abstract:Ecosystem degradation and fossil fuel depletion are the two foremost concerns to look for alternative fuels. Rapid population growth is primarily accountable for higher consumption of fossil fuel sources, although engine technology is achieving milestones in terms of fuel efficiency and lower exhaust emissions in order to contribute towards a sustainable environment. The main root cause of global warming is carbon dioxide emissions; therefore, it is imperative to assess the impact of alternative fuels in diesel engines with an aim to minimize carbon emissions. A current study deals with the reduction of carbon emissions and improvement of efficiency through addition of manganese nano-additive to di-ethyl ether and diesel fuel blend in particulate form. Fuel blends were formed by adding various proportions of manganese to high-speed diesel fuel and stirring the mixture while heating it for 10 min. The blends were then tested in diesel engines at two distinct loads and five engine speed ranges. Emission analyzer was used to ascertain the CO2 output of engine. At higher loads for 10 % diethyl ether in diesel, the increase in brake thermal efficiency was 24.19, 28.17 and 26.86 % when the manganese amount in blend was changed as 250 mg, 375 mg and 500 mg respectively. On the other side CO2 emissions increase by 11.57, 30.52 and 20.33 % for manganese concentrations of 250 mg, 375 mg and 500 mg respectively. Analysis performed with Design Expert 13 showed that the desirability was 0.796 for a blend of 375 mg manganese at 1300 rpm and 4500 W load with 33.0611 % BTE, 334.011kg/kWh BSFC, 67.8821Nm torque, and 6.072 % CO2. Therefore, it can be deduced that manganese nanoparticle blends improved engine performance but CO2 emissions also increase which can be responsible for global warming and it should be reduced through catalytic converters.

Abstract:This study investigated the impact of dual-fuel operation using ethanol-blended diesel fuel enriched with hydroxy gas on CRDI engine performance, combustion, and emission characteristics. Neat diesel fuel was used to run the engine, along with a 20% volume fraction of an ethanol-diesel mixture that had been enhanced with three distinct streams of hydroxy gas, namely 1, 1.5, and 2 LPM. Hydroxy gas was generated by an electrolysis technique using a plate-type dry cell electrolyser (316 L stainless steel) in the presence of a NaOH catalyst. Compared to E20 (Ethanol 20%) fuel, HHO gas enrichment with lower proportions of ethanol blend E20 + 2LPM had a 2.74% increase of BTE and a 5.89% decrease of BSEC at a 5.02 bar BMEP condition. Similarly, HC, CO, and smoke emissions decreased by 4.61%, 5.19%, and 3.1%, while NOx emissions and EGT increased by 3.22% and 3.06% compared to E20. With the addition of HHO gas, combustion characteristics such as HRR, CP, and ignition delay improve while the combustion duration increases. At maximum BMEP, cylinder pressure and heat release rate increase by 3.18% and 6.58% for E20 + 2LPM HHO, respectively. It was found that the 20% volume of the ethanol-diesel blend, with 2 LPM of hydroxy gas, positively affects engine characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract: Diesel vehicles are similar to gasoline vehicles because they both use internal combustion engines. One difference is that diesel engines have a compression-ignited injection system rather than the spark-ignited system used by most gasoline vehicles. In recent years, the acceptance of fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) as a substitute to petroleum diesel has rapidly grown in India. The raw materials for biodiesel productionin this country mainly include traditional seed oils and used frying oils. In the search for new low-cost alternative feed stocks for biodiesel production, this study emphasizes the evaluation of lemon grassoil. The experimental results showed that the oil content of Lemon grass were remarkably high (45%). The main emphasis has been laid on optimum production of biodiesel from Lemongrass Oil then using the biodiesel blends with diesel studying the comparative characteristics and engine performance and the blends made from the biodiesel with diesel. The oil was chemically converted via an alkaline transesterification reaction with methanol to methyl esters, with a yield nearly 97.5 wt.%.All of the measured properties of the produced biodiesel met the current quality requirements. Oils were esterifying (butyl esters) before blending with pure diesel in the ratio of 4:96, 8:92, 12:80 by volume. Pure diesel was used as control. Initially the properties of the lemongrass Oil blends were determined density, viscosity, dynamic viscosity, flashes point, fire point and calorific value. An assessment of engine performance brake power (BP), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), brake thermal efficiency (BTE) etc., was carried out for pure diesel and the oil blends. However,lemongrass oil at 12% blend with diesel gave best performance as compared to other blends

Abstract:Biodiesel is considered as a viable alternative in regions where traditional diesel fuel is not readily available. In an effort to improve the diesel engine efficiency under these circumstances, combustion components were treated with a coating of partially stabilized zirconia with a 500 μm layer coating using plasma coating technology. In this study, the engine was powered by neat coconut waste cooking oil (CWCO) with diethyl ether (DEE) serving as an additive. A fuel mixture comprising 90% CWCO and 10% DEE was used to compare the performance of coated and uncoated engines to diesel fuel standards. Direct-injection compression ignition engine, tested with loads up to 12 kgf, showed lower BSFC and improved BTE despite lower NOx emissions. HC, CO, and smoke emissions were 18%, 11%, and 19% lower in blends in the 90% CWCO and 10% DEE than blends compared to diesel fuel at higher loads.

Abstract:The rapid depletion of crude oil and environmental degradation necessitate the search for alternative fuel sources for internal combustion engines. Biodiesel is a promising alternative fuel for compression ignition (CI) engines due to its heat content and combustion properties. Biodiesel blends are used in various vehicles and equipment, such as cars, trucks, buses, off-road vehicles, and oil furnaces. Biodiesel can reduce emissions from CI engines by up to 75% and improve engine durability due to its high lubricity. However, biodiesel has some drawbacks, including a performance reduction and increased nitrogen oxide emissions. Therefore, this study aims to investigate using environmentally available biodiesel in a low-heat rejection engine and an antioxidant additive to enhance the performance and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. India currently has several biodiesel sources, including mango seed oil, mahua oil, and pongamia oil, which can be effectively utilized in CI engines by adding l-ascorbic acid. The experimental work involves a single-cylinder 4-stroke water-cooled direct injection CI engine with a power output of 5.2 kW. The engine's cylinder head, piston head, and valves are coated with lanthanum oxide using the plasma spray coating technique, with a thickness of 0.5 mm. The coated and uncoated engines are tested with different proportions of mahua oil, mango seed oil, and pongamia oil. The results show that the engine's performance is significantly improved compared to the baseline engine at all loads. Additionally, these biodiesels exhibit a notable reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions when combined with l-ascorbic acid.

Abstract:In order to replace conventional diesel, biodiesel from various feedstocks is being researched for diesel engines. This study explores novel biodiesel blends produced from unconventional resources such as mentha piperita (peppermint), pontederia crassipes (water hyacinth), tamarindus indica (tamarind), and trichosanthes cucumerina (snake gourd) to assess the outcomes of a diesel engine. The fuel samples are designated as MP20, PC20, TC20, and TI20, which consist of 80% biodiesel and 20% diesel. The assessment is carried out on a four-stroke, one-cylinder diesel engine that is water-cooled and set to operate at 1500 rpm with a 17.5 compression ratio under various engine loading scenarios with quarter-incremental loading from one-fourth to full loading conditions. The fuel samples are injected with 220 bar injection pressure into the combustion chamber 23° before TDC. An extensive analysis of engine parameters is performed using engine configuration, fuel characteristics, and applied boundary conditions. This comprises brake-specific energy consumption (BSEC), fuel consumption (BSFC), thermal efficiency (BTE), cylinder pressure (CP), heat release rate (HRR), particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. At 100% load, the biodiesel blends show an increase in BSFC (2.8–12.6%) and BSEC (1.1–7.1%) but a minor decrease in CP (0.9–6.9%), HRR (0.8–16.2%), and BTE (1.2–2.9%). For biodiesel blends at full engine load, the emissions of PM (8.9–21.4%), NOx (1.4–16.2%) and CO 2 (2.4–7.9%) are all significantly reduced. The results emphasize the distinct benefits of biodiesel blends, demonstrating enhanced engine performance and substantial decreases in emissions, which supports the aim of providing sustainable energy solutions.

Abstract:The transition of energy sources from fossil fuel to biofuel is becoming a major topic in the world towards renewable energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve environmental air quality, and reduce dependence on fossil fuel in the future. This study aims to evaluate the effect of increasing the concentration of oxygenated biofuel in diesel fuel on the emissions of diesel engines. In this study, B30 (30% biodiesel and 70% diesel) was used as a base fuel, and a fraction of pure biodiesel (B100) was added to increase the biodiesel concentration in B30 fuel to create B40 (40% biodiesel and 60% diesel). Furthermore, the addition of 5% and 10% of bioethanol as a fuel additive in the fuel blend was conducted while maintaining a biodiesel concentration of 40%. The effect of bioethanol contained in the fuel blends was tested using a single-cylinder 418 cc diesel engine. The experiment was carried out at an engine speed of 1000–3000 rpm. The result shows that the concentration of the diesel-biodiesel-bioethanol blend affected the emissions produced by the diesel engines. Combustion efficiency increased with the concentration of biodiesel in the diesel fuel, as shown by reduced CO emissions, increased CO2 emissions, and increased NOx emissions at engine speeds of 2000–3000 rpm. In comparison to 5% bioethanol at various engine speeds, adding 10% bioethanol has a disadvantageous effect on the combustion process, increasing CO and HC emissions.
