Abstract:In the present study, silica hydrosols were firstly prepared by water-based sol-gel method with the surfactant emulsification, using tetraethoxysilane as the precursor and ammonium hydroxide as the catalyst. Then, the silica hydrosols were applied to the cotton fabrics by dipping process, followed by the modification with (heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetradecyl) trimethoxysilane and heat treatment to prepare superhydrophobic cotton fabrics. The process resulted in SiO2 nanoparticles covalently attached to the cellulose surface and fluorine-containing siloxane coupling agent which brought about an inherent microscale roughness and the superhydrophobic character. The investigation of oil/water mixture has been carried out using the as-prepared superhydrophobic cellulose fabric-based materials.

Abstract:In order to prepare superhydrophobic cotton fabrics,alkylchlorosilanes were used and deposited on the cotton fabric by chemical vapor deposition,to form on the surface of the fabric a low surface energy material—polymethylsiloxane with rough microstructure,which,in combination with the tortuous structure inherent in the fabric,made the cotton fabric have superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties.SEM,contact angle tester,and dust collecting test were used to examine the surface morphology and superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties of the cotton fabric.The results showed that when the volume ratio of methyltrichlorosilane(MTS) to dimethyldichlorosilane(DDS) was 5∶1,total volume of DDS and MTS was 8-10 mL,deposition time was 120 min,the contact angle of the cotton fabric was 152.3°,and the sliding angle was 2.7°.Self-cleaning tests showed that the cotton fabric has excellent self-cleaning properties.This approach is simple and inexpensive and does not require expensive equipment.
One-step preparation of functionalized superhydrophobic cotton fabric with self-cleaning and oil/water separation ability

Abstract:In this study, a superhydrophobic cotton fabric decorated with zinc dodecanethiolate (denoted as Zn-DDT) and low-surface-energy polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was prepared by a eco-friendly one-step dip-coating process. The Zn-DDT@PDMS coating endowed the fabric with rough structures and low surface energy, leading to the superhydrophobic surface. The exceptional water repellency and self-cleaning ability could be observed on the surface of the synthesized cotton fabric. Employing sandpapers with different mesh for abrasion test, excellent water repellency was remained after 300 cycles. The water contact angle of the proposed fabric was still above 150° when laundering test and ultrasonic treatment were respectively performed for a certain time. Consequently, the obtained fabric demonstrated outstanding superhydrophobic stability after enduring with diverse physical treatments. Additionally, the developed fabric also presented superior resistance to chemical treatments such as ultraviolet irradiation and corrosive solution immersion, indicating good chemical stability. The simulation test of gravity-driven oil/water separation was conducted with the fabric and manifested desirable separation efficiency of larger than 97.9% after 10 cycles. The mechanical and chemical stability of the fabric make it a prospective material utilized for future oil/water separation.

Abstract:Nowadays, the environmental problem caused by oily wastewater discharge and crude oil leakage has attracted worldwide attention. Recently developed technologies for oil/water separation have been based mainly on materials with special wettability. In this work, a self-cleaning system with smart-control and reusable functions for oil/water separation has been built on cotton fabric via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). The fabric showed high pH-and thermo-responsibility, which was strongly dependent on the pDMAEMA grafting ratio. And by modulating pH or temperature, the fabric switched from superhydrophilic (WCA similar to 0 degrees) to highly hydrophobic (WCA similar to 130 degrees), and therefore, were suitable both for the separation of water-rich or oil-rich oil/water mixtures as a type of adsorbent material. The fabric could adsorb oil over 4 times its own weight, and reversibly release it in acidic water, making the fabric easily recyclable.

Abstract:Robust superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with ultraviolet (UV)-proof performance were prepared via a simple one-pot method with composite coating of hierarchical CuS microflower nanoparticles and silicone elastomer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The facile preparation of CuS microflower nanoparticles was conducted via relatively low-temperature reaction. The surface morphology, chemical composition, thermal degradation behavior, and crystal structure of the products were evaluated. The simultaneous roughening due to hierarchical rough morphology of CuS microflower nanoparticles and PDMS hydrophobization resulted in the coated fabric with microscale fibers exhibiting superhydrophobic property and its water contact angle was 159.3° ± 0.6°. The superhydrophobic textile also displayed outstanding UV-proof performance with a large ultraviolet protection factor of 535.36 due to ultraviolet-absorption, light scattering and frequent light reflection of hierarchical CuS nanoparticles. The superhydrophobic textile showed excellent stain resistance and self-cleaning property and also was able to separate oil and water with high efficiency and good separation reusability caused by the contrasting wettability of the coated textile for water droplets and oil droplets. The as-prepared superhydrophobic fabric displayed excellent robustness against 2000 cycles rubbing, water jetting and long-time UV illumination and satisfactory chemical stability. This superhydrophobic coating showed no negative impact on the mechanical strength of cotton fabric. The facile approach in favor of large-scale preparation showed promising potential for wide application of flexible superhydrophobic cotton textiles with ultraviolet-blocking performance.

Abstract:Water scarcity and pollution has become one of the most serious problems in the world. Generally, both oils and microorganisms exist in polluted water, hence multi-functional materials for the removal of diverse substances from water are desired. We reported a facile method for preparing cotton fabric possessing hybrid poly(sodium methacrylate) (pNaMAA)/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for oil/water separation and water disinfection. A crosslinked pNaMAA layer was generated on the cotton surface by ultraviolet-initiated polymerization. By replacing Na+ in pNaMAA molecules, Ag+ was incorporated into the fabric and then was reduced to AgNPs in situ by photo-thermal reduction. Due to the high underwater oleophobicity and bactericidal effect of the pNaMAA/AgNP hybrid layer, the gravity-driven oil/water separation efficiency of the prepared fabric was higher than 99% and the bacteria killing ratio achieved nearly 100%. Furthermore, AgNPs exhibited relatively good fastness during application. Combining their excellent oil removal and water disinfection effectiveness, these textile-based materials provide a promising future in the field of point-of-use water purification.

Abstract:A facile and mild dip-coating method of fabricating superhydrophobic coating for cotton textiles was proposed. Cotton fabric was treated with TiO2 sol prepared under mild conditions and subsequently dip-coated by fluoropolymer (PHM). The PHM was synthesized by copolymerization of hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFBMA) and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) to replace long-chain fluoroalkylsilanes, which are costly and potentially harmful. The coated textile displayed wonderful superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 153.5°. Additionally, the stability of the coated textile was tested by placement in acidic and alkali solutions, ultrasonic processing, and washing, during which it exhibited desirable durability. Furthermore, the surface showed an excellent biomimetic self-cleaning effect of removing both liquid pollutant and solid powder stains. Importantly, the prepared textile exhibited efficient oil–water separation for its superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. These advantages make it an ideal material for large-scale industrial applications under various conditions.

Abstract:It remains a great challenge to prepare multi-functional fabrics using a low-cost and scalable method with fluorine-free materials. In this paper, we report a new procedure for producing fluorine-free super hydrophobic cotton fabrics, via a simple dip-coating process. Firstly, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) adhesive layer is deposited onto the cotton substrate, followed by the subsequent deposition of ZnO nanoparticles to enhance the surface roughness through an oil bath process. Finally, a second PDMS dip-coating is applied to construct a multi-layered PDMS-ZnO-PDMS composite coating on the cotton fabrics. The multi-layer coated samples display superhydrophobic properties, with a water contact angle (CA) exceeding 160°. Additionally, the new PDMS-ZnO-PDMS@cotton fabric exhibits excellent multi-functions, including UV-blocking, self-cleaning and oil-water separation. The prepared superhydrophobic fabric can withstand a large number of abrasion cycles and 20cycles of accelerated washing without obvious decline in the water contact angle. This facile preparation method is of low-cost, environmentally friendly, and suitable for large-scale production of a series of specialty fabrics including sports clothing.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic cotton fabric was prepared by coating fluorine-free cationic polyhedral oligomeric siloxane/polydimethylsiloxane-modified polyacrylate emulsion using the pad-bath method. Due to the successful introduction of heptaoctylmethacryloxypropyl polyhedral oligomeric siloxane and monovinyl polydimethylsiloxane, the film with a rough structure and low surface energy was formed on the cotton fabric surface, exhibiting excellent superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 161°. Additionally, the finished cotton fabric showed exceptional self-cleaning and anti-foiling abilities. The finished cotton fabric had a separation efficiency of over 97% for oil–water mixtures and maintained a high separation efficiency of over 96% after 20 cycles of separating the n-hexane/water mixture. In addition, the separation of different water-in-oil emulsions was achieved by overlapping three layers of finished cotton fabric. This suggests that the as-prepared superhydrophobic cotton fabric will be a promising material in application for treating oil–water mixtures and water-in-oil emulsions due to the low-cost, simple fabrication method and the superior separation capabilities.

Abstract:With the continuous development of the industry, oil spill accidents occur frequently. Oil/water separation materials are considered to be a major choice for the treatment of oily wastewater due to their flexible operation and low cost. Cotton fabrics are low‐cost and environmentally friendly, which are used as substrates to prepare oil/water separation materials with quite competitive in the market. A large number of oil/water separation cotton fabrics with excellent properties have been frequently reported in recent decades. On the other hand, since the service life of these oil/water separation cotton fabrics is closely related to the thin layer covered on the surface, so in order to improve the practical applicability, substances such as dopamine and plant polyphenols that improve the adhesion of the thin layer to the surface of the material are introduced into the preparation process of these materials. On this basis, the research progress of super‐hydrophobic cotton fabrics, super‐hydrophilic/underwater super‐oleophobic cotton fabrics, super durable oil/water separation cotton fabrics and intelligent response to oil/water separation fabric in recent years are reviewed, as well as their applications in the field of oil/water separation.

Abstract:In this work, robust superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with ultraviolet (UV) shielding, self-cleaning, photocatalysis, and oil/water separation were successfully prepared based on micro/nano hierarchical ZnO/HNTs (halloysite nanotubes) hybrid particles and silicone elastomer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). ZnO/HNTs hybrid particles were prepared by in-situ growth of ZnO nanoparticles on the surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). ZnO/HNTs hybrid particles and PDMS were used to successively coat cotton fabrics by dip-coating approach. The coated cotton fabrics displayed excellent superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 162.5 ± 1.0° owing to the roughness provided by micro/nano hierarchical ZnO/HNTs hybrid particles and low surface energy achieved by PDMS. After being exposed to the UV lamp for 5 h, about 90.8% of the methylene blue was degraded, indicating that the coated cotton fabrics had excellent photocatalytic activity. The as-prepared cotton fabrics also displayed outstanding self-cleaning and antifouling properties. In addition, due to both superhydrophobic and superoleophilic characteristics, the as-prepared cotton fabrics could be used to separate several oil/water mixtures and showed good recoverability. The superhydrophobic cotton fabrics also exhibited excellent UV shielding performance with a large ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 1643.28 due to strong ultraviolet-absorption, light scattering and frequent light reflection of ZnO nanoparticles from ZnO/HNTs composites coated on cotton fabrics. Importantly, the as-prepared cotton fabrics retained superhydrophobic performance after 2000 cycles rubbing, 90 h UV illumination, and immersing in acidic and alkali solutions with different pH values ranging from 1 to 14 for 1 h. These characteristics made multifunctional cotton fabrics a satisfactory candidate in various promising fields.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic cotton fabrics have received much attention in recent years. They have been constructed usually by lowering surface energy and increasing surface roughness. Because of the significant environmental harm caused by fluorine-containing reagents, difficult preparation techniques, and low wear resistance, finding a simple approach to prepare a fluorine-free, wear-resistant, strongly sticky superhydrophobic cotton fabric remains a challenge. In this study, we describe a fluorine-free superhydrophobic cotton fabric using the simple preparation approach of immersion, which creates nanoscale siloxane aggregates dispersible in organic solvents. The modified cotton fabrics are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, fourier-transform infrared, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Excellent superhydrophobicity (ultrahigh water contact angle is 165.2° and sliding angle is 7.2° as well as excellent self-cleaning properties) has been easily applied to cotton fabrics. Superhydrophobic cotton fabrics also have good anti-fouling properties for many common types of liquids, such as milk, coffee, cola, etc. It has been established that these waterproof coatings exhibit outstanding mechanical endurance against water impact, abrasion, and laundering. Superhydrophobic fabrics have a wide range of possible uses due to their readily available coating materials, simple application technique, and strong mechanical endurance.

Abstract:A superhydrophobic cotton fabric coated with ferric oxide (Fe2O3) nanostructures and low-surface-energy polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was fabricated using facile solution immersion processes for oil/water separation. The superhydrophobic Fe2O3@PDMS cotton fabric displayed remarkable self-cleaning property. Especially, outstanding mechanical stability was indicated after the fabric was endured with sandpaper abrasion for 100 cycles, laundering test for 180 min, and ultrasonic treatment for 60 min. Moreover, the as-prepared fabric delivered excellent chemical stability when exposed to corrosive liquids for 6 h and ultraviolet light for 72 h. More importantly, several types of oil/water mixtures were selected to realize gravity-driven separation and the fabric with special wettability showed high separation efficiency (>98.6%) and permeation flux higher than 68,788 L m−2 h−1. The good recycling performance was further demonstrated after 50 separation cycles. The fabric also achieved continuous separation of oil/water mixtures. Therefore, we envision that the developed cotton fabric with robust and durable superhydrophobicity holds limitless promise for practical oil/water separation.

Abstract:In the present study, the superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with ultraviolet (UV) resistance and photocatalytic properties were fabricated by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and CuS/reduced graphene oxide (RGO). The CuS/RGO particles enhanced the surface roughness, and PDMS was used to reduce the surface energy of cotton fabrics and increase the adhesion of CuS/RGO particles to cotton fabrics. The water contact angle (WCA) of coated cotton fabrics could reach ∼158.4°, endowing the fabrics with excellent self‐cleaning and oil‐water separation properties. It is confirmed that cotton fabric can obtain superhydrophobic property by adjusting the concentration of CuS/RGO and PDMS. Thanks to the good photocatalytic activity and excellent ultraviolet absorption capacity of the composite material, the superhydrophobic fabrics possessed outstanding ultraviolet resistance with the maximum UV protection factor (UPF) of 851.2 and photocatalytic performance with the photocatalytic degradation rate of methylene blue 92 %. Furthermore, the prepared cotton fabric retained superhydrophobicity after 90 h UV irradiation or 2000 cycles rubbing. The flexible superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with UV protection had promising application prospects in various fields. CuS/RGO/PDMS@fabric with UV protection and photocatalysis were prepared via dip‐pad‐dry method. The obtained fabrics showed excellent superhydrophobic properties with the water contact angle (WCA) about 157.8°. Due to synergistic effect between the hierarchical structures and PDMS, the obtained cotton fabrics showed excellent superhydrophobic properties and durabilities. The superhydrophobic cotton fabrics possessed excellent robustness against 1000 rubbing cycles and 96 h UV irradiation. More importantly, the functional cotton fabric also showed good UV protection performance, with UPF of 851.2, UVA and UVB of 0.15 % and 0.06 %, respectively.

Abstract:This paper presents a facile and versatile strategy to fabricate robust and superhydrophobic/superoleophilic cotton for the removal of oils and organic solvents from polluted water. The superwettability cotton was prepared via in-situ hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) on the cotton fiber surface using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a coupling agent and subsequent hexadecyltrimethoxysilane modification. By simply adjusting the molecular weight of PVP and the concentration of NH3•H2O, the surface roughness of SiO2-modified cotton fibers could be well controlled to generate cotton fibers with excellent superhydrophobicity. The prepared cotton fibers were used as superabsorbents for oil/water separation. It absorbed up to 35 times and 50 times its own weight of n-hexane and chloroform, respectively, while repelling water completely. After collecting the absorbed oils via a simple squeezing method, the cotton could be reused for at least 5 cycles. Moreover, the whole procedure was carried out in a mild environment, with no intricate instruments or toxic reagents.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment is a process of significant socio-environmental implications, constantly calling for effective methods towards higher sustainability. In this work, an environment-friendly fluorine-free modified cotton fabric (C-S-TiO2 cotton fabric) was successfully prepared by the combination of in-situ growth of TiO2 and hydrophobic modification with octadecyl methacrylate (ODMA) by thiol-ene click reaction. The prepared cotton fabric showed superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity (water contact angle≈156.2°), self-cleaning property and an ultra-high separation efficiency (>99.90 %) for different kinds of oil–water mixtures with the flux up to 6800 L m−2h−1. It was found that the achieved oil separation efficiency was above 99.80 % after 20 cycles. Besides, the C-S-TiO2 cotton fabric demonstrated an excellent photocatalytic degradation rate for methyl blue (MB) (98.0 %) and the degradation rate was still above 97.0 % after 5 cycles. Importantly, the C-S-TiO2 cotton fabric was tolerant towards different harsh environments conditioned by acidic solution, alkaline solution, salt solution, and organic solvent. Herein, C-S-TiO2 cotton fabric was regarded as a promising material for complex wastewater treatment.

However, the simple and low‐cost strategy for making durable superhydrophobic materials remains a major challenge. Here, we report that stable and durable superhydrophobic cotton fabrics can be prepared using a simple two‐step impregnation process. Silica nanoparticles are surface modified by hydrolysis condensation of 3‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). The amino group of APTMS and the acrylic group of the crosslinking agent pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA) undergo 1,4‐conjugate addition reaction to fix the silica nanoparticles, and the acrylic group of the crosslinking agent PETA undergo 1,4‐conjugate addition reaction with the amino group of octadecylamine (ODA), finally forming a covalent cross‐linked rough network structure. The long hydrophobic chain of ODA makes the cotton fabric exhibit excellent superhydrophobic properties, and the water contact angle (WCA) of the fabric surface reaches 158°. The modified cotton fabric has good physical and chemical stability, self‐cleaning and anti‐fouling. At the same time, the modified fabric shows excellent oil/water separation efficiency (98.16% after 20 cycles) and ultrahigh separation flux (15413.63 L m−2 h−1) due to its superhydrophobicity, superoleophilicity and inherent porous structure. Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials have great application prospects in oil-water separation. However, the superhydrophobic materials are easily polluted by waste oil in the long-term process of oil-water separation, which will lead to the reduction of oil-water separation efficiency and oil flux. In this paper, superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with self-healing properties were successfully prepared by the step-by-step method. After being submerged in acid for 12 hours at pH = 2, in alkaline for 3 hours at pH = 12, in ethanol ultrasonically for 12 hours, and in mechanical abrasion for 25 cycles, the superhydrophobic cotton fabric retained its superhydrophobicity. With an oil-water separation efficiency of 99% and an oil flow rate of up to 16.21 m3•m-2•h-1, the superhydrophobic cotton fabric also performs well in terms of oil-water separation. In addition, the self-healing properties of the superhydrophobic cotton fabric extend the service life of the superhydrophobic separation membrane in oil-water separation.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel approach to develop a multifunctional coating on cotton fabric, emphasizing the utilization of cotton fiber as a biological macromolecule, by integrating a TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 layered structure to confer superhydrophobic properties and multiple functionalities. The engineered structure not only enhances fabric roughness but also incorporates non-fluoro hydrophobic agents, thereby imparting diverse capabilities such as photocatalysis, oil-water separation, and self-cleaning to the cotton substrate. Fabrication of the TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 layered structure involved ultrasonic dispersion of TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 , subsequently deposited onto cotton fabric. Sequential hydrophobic treatment with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) achieved superhydrophobicity, exhibiting an exceptional water contact angle (WCA) of 157.9°. Comprehensive characterization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric validated the composite's structural and chemical properties. The introduced TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 structure significantly enhanced fabric roughness, while PDMS treatment lowered surface energy and IPDI hydrolysis facilitated cross-linking, ensuring durability. The resultant TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 /PDMS cotton exhibited outstanding self-cleaning properties and demonstrated oil adsorption capacity, accommodating both heavy and light oils. Notably, this superhydrophobic cotton efficiently separated water-oil mixtures, achieving 96.8 % efficiency even after 10 cycles. Moreover, under simulated light, it displayed outstanding photocatalytic degradation (93.2 %) of methylene blue while maintaining a WCA of 150° post-degradation, highlighting sustained functionality. This innovation holds promise for sustainable applications, offering robust physical and chemical durability within the realm of biological macromolecules. The amalgamation of TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 layered structure and PDMS treatment on cotton fabric underscores a sustainable approach to address water-oil separation challenges and enable efficient self-cleaning. This research demonstrates a significant step towards sustainable material applications and addresses pertinent real-world challenges in diverse technological domains.
